Army out, Gardner-Webb in
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
And now for the Tuesday Countdown:
10: Congratulations, Georgia Tech fans. Your tax dollars went to Gardner-Webb.
9: Tech plays 1-AA Gardner-Webb this week. Why? Because Army - maybe just the grunts on KP duty - decided to increase the wimp factor on its schedule and bought its way out of this week’s scheduled home game against Tech. Army refunded Tech $125,000 for its contracted share of the gate. So the way I figure it, tax dollars went from us to Army to Tech and then to Gardner-Webb, which had to be paid to come here.
8: I hesitate to criticize anybody in the armed forces. But this is weak. Tech and Army had a home-and-home deal. Each would get $125,000 to play in the other team’s stadium. But before last year’s game at Bobby Dodd, Army athletic director Kevin Anderson approached Tech AD Dan Radakovich. “He came up to me and said, ‘We’re changing our scheduling philosophy,’” Radakovich recalled. “Then he hands me a letter saying they are pulling out of the game and there’s a check for $125,000 [as the forfeiture fee] in the envelope. I was a little stunned. I thought it was going to be a typical pre-game athletic director greeting.”
7: Understand something: Teams seldom pull out of these deals without warning, let alone give up a home game. Tech gets hurt in the process. It’s nearly impossible to negotiate a home-and-home deal with another 1-A school so late in the process because schedules are made far in advance. The next opening in a Jackets’ schedule wasn’t until 2012. To bring a 1-A school for one year is cost prohibitive ($600,000 to $800,000). So …
6: Tech was left with bringing in little G-W (at a cost of $300,000). The Jackets have already played 1-AA Jacksonville State. So this dents their credibility. But Radakovich declined to take a shot at Anderson, other then to say, “A lot of our people were disappointed because they were looking forward to going [to West Point].” Just wondering how military guys feel about their schedule being stuffed with set-ups.
5: And now for something completely different: With franchises struggling all over North America, the NHL decided to open the season in Prague and Stockholm. The yutz factor just went up again.
4: Once again, this time with feeling: It’s not sad and pathetic that people still support Michael Vick. It is sad and pathetic that people use that support as an excuse for race-baiting and Matt Ryan-bashing. I wrote a column on Ryan off the Green Bay game, never typed the words, “Michael Vick,” and yet reader responses mutated into another pro-Vick/anti-Vick grenade toss. Please. Everybody just take a breath.
3: Just guessing here, but if John McCain dumps Sarah Palin and adds Tina Fey as his running mate, he could probably get the swing votes.
2: The Thrashers open the season Friday night. I’m not sure how many tickets have been sold. But I know this: I went to Ticketmaster on the guise of wanting to buy 10 tickets. They were on the first level, Row T, on the faceoff circle.
1: Army plays host to Eastern Michigan Saturday. It’s homecoming.

For one, this will hurt tech as far as the rankings go and voters should be reminded of what happen. and they also lose money, and me being a spts admin grad major, thats hurts a program. NOW ABOUT THE FALCONS: over half of falcons fans are BLACK and they will support VICK, an mabye its true that they will play the race card to bash matt….but hey the organization did the same towards VICK. I LOVE VICK, but he will not be a VICK nor accomplish anything great. so the dome and the falcons will never make a profit due to this…

Tech doesn’t need to be ranked they need to keep winning. I am not sure that GW couldn’t beat Army. Unless two teams knock off Va. Tech we can’t win the ACC because of a 3 point loss in an away game that they fumbled away. I think most people will think Tech could beat Va. Tech on a neutral field by year’s end if not at Va. Tech yet they may not have the shot at the ACC Championship. It has to start with BC beating Va. Tech this weekend.

The taxpayers do not fund the Army’s athletic association. It’s basically a private business, just like the Naval Academy Athletic Assocation (NAAA) at my alma mater. Rest assured, the taxpayers didn’t pay Paul Johnson’s salary at Navy nor did they fund Army rescheduling into a game where they had better chances.
Besides, I doubt they want to face PJ a seventh time.

If we bear GW this weekend maybe we could play them later in the year also. A win is a win. Two GW’s should = one Army victory, right. Previous comment was correct, who cares right now in this building process, just win the games and good things will come Tech’s way.

Not sure this really hurts Tech in the rankings. Army typically isn’t great for strength of schedule anyway. Nobody likes these cupcakes except the coaches anyway. You’d hear a lot more complaints from Jacket fans except that the timing allows Josh Nesbitt a bit more time to recover.

I hope it happens. fwiw, the Georgia Southern faithful still follow CPJ every day, we loved him when he was here and still love the guy!
GT is fortunate to have one of the very best head Coaches in college football. PJ is Tech’s new friend but our old time long lasting friend, The guy is amazing!

Sarcastic Sam, yes I am whining, living up to my name. I was disappointed when Army pulled out, just because they knew they would have lost the game. Along with BuzzFan1936, I remember the great Army teams. No matter that they’ve played Tech only three times, ever, and lost them all. Those games all followed the decline of Army’s program. But they still have a great, and nationwide name.

While I am at it, Jerious Norwood Stinks, he is at the top of my list to trade out of Atlanta, not cut because he does have value. This guy always makes the wrong cut back. His vision is horrible. Not to mention that he trips on his on feet when he breaks out in the open field more times than not. I know people probably think I’m crazy, but this guy will always be a backup regardless of his 40 yard dash time.

I follow what you’re saying about Army pulling out of the Tech game — but there’s nothing underhanded about it. Tech agreed to the buyout terms with Army. Army is simply exercising an option that Tech officials negotiated.
About the Vick thing. AJC sportswriters don’t have to mention the guy for comments to disintegrate into name calling and nastiness. Bear in mind these same folks (on both sides) were probably arguing about the union and the confederacy up until they moved the conversation to a certain quarterback from VT.

It’s a shame when it could have helped both schools recruiting areas. Nothing against the Div-aa but I would rather play the Div 1 teams just from an interest and entertainment value. Most likely Army has to recruit nationwide and Tech has benefitted from some national recruiting. Yet all this has to be balanced with the win break number of 6 to get to a bowl game.

Hey get your facts straight. Army does not use tax payer dollars to fund its athletic program. That money comes from private donations from alumni like me and friends of AOG. The new AD and the coach are trying to gain more attendance from the local area and quite frankly no one in upstate NY wants to see the Jackets go up on the Hudson and defeat Army. They are trying to build a winning a tradition and get the program back to respectability. Tech and other so-called top tier programs all schedule weaker teams on their schedules so give Army a break on this one and look at it in a broader context.

The story I heard, last fall when this dropped if I recall, was that the US Military Academy (i.e., West Point) has an agreement with the Bell Helicopter Armed Forces Bowl game to play there if they get 6 D-I wins. US Naval Academy sort of has a similar “gentlemens’” agreement with the earlier bowl game in San Diego. So, my thought is West Point is doing it to get to a bowl game … we’ll see if it “pays” off.
An aside note … I pull up the online AJC and saw a link off the front page to GT tailgating photos. I thought, “Cool.” Then the headline reads something like “Tailgating in Black and Gold.” WRONG!!! We haven’t been “black and gold” since the mid 80s. Come on, AJC! We all know you’re homers for Clarke County but get it right. The Institute’s colors have always officially been, and will always be, OLD GOLD and WHITE.

GREAT comment about Tina Fey, she would make a much more competent VP; she is much smarter than Palin. You know the only difference between Palin and Cheney? Lipstick. As a smart female, it is offensive that Palin was put on the ticket to pander to females; as if we will vote for her simply b/c she is female regardless of her qualifications, or lack thereof.
Couldn’t agree more w/ your comment about Vick either. In my opinion, the Falcons’ getting off to a decent start this season has more to do with the leadership, coach and GM, than w/ the quarterback. Vick’s story might have been different had he been under a strong leader who would have guided him when he was QB, maybe if someone had told him “No” in the Falcons’ organization a long time ago he wouldn’t be in the mess he is in now.

Sautee Dawg—
Good point…if the scheduling could have been made to work (i.e., on that weekend or a bye weekend). What weekend was UM’s game?
I doubt the rest of our sked (or Michigan’s) would have been so accommodating, if they were on different weekends where one of us already had another game on the sked.
But something that could have been looked into nonetheless.
IMO we shouldn’t play more than 1 I-AA game, if any at all. We should play at least 1 SEC team (besides UGA) and fill in the rest from other I-A conferences in the south (preferably C-USA over Sun Belt).
FWIW: Here’s the rest of our OOC sked for the next decade or two, not counting UGA:
2009: Jacksonville State, @Mississippi State, @Vanderbilt
2010: South Carolina State, Ole Miss, MTSU
2011: Western Carolina, @Ole Miss, @MTSU
2012: MTSU, SE Louisiana
2013: Elon, Vanderbilt, @Alabama
2014: Alabama, Wofford, @Tulane
2015: Tulane, @Syracuse
2016: Syracuse
2017: Auburn
2018: Tulane, @Auburn
2019: @Tulane

Your’e right it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to know that the Clintonistas did nothing when the WTC was attacked in ‘93 by Muslim terrorists during his watch and he did nothing when the U.S.S. Cole lost 17+ sailors from Muslim terrorists.
But, it will take a rocket scientist to figure out why you probably think the democrat controlled congress is doing a fine job. They have a 9% approval rating nationwide and are a laughing stock, but not for you.
It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to know that the Clintonistas got us into this mess with “politically correct” lending schemes by banks pressured by democrat bank committee leaders like B.Frank & C.Dodd.

Jabster Lot of tough teams on that schedule coming up over the next few years, just thinking earlier that GT vs Michigan would have been a good matchup this year, both with new coaches and everything.

Hey “Obama 08”: go read Biff’s comments (above) and get a clue. Also, please don’t riot in the streets and loot my house when Obama loses.
Go Jackets!!

It wouldn’t surprise me if the Army-GT scheduling debacle was caused by our Commander-n-Thief GW Bush. “Dumb”-Ya couldn’t pour pee out a boot with the directions on the bottom.
They should build the Bush “Memorial” Library in the middle of a landfill so that we will be forever reminded of the stinch left by his awful administration. Goodbye and good riddens, idiot!

I would really like to respond again to ALL those facist leftists and “Barry” Hussein Obama empty suit supporters, but I’m at work today so I can pay for your medicaid and FREE perscription meds.
P.S. They already have a shrine and “memorial” library for Barak Hussein … it’s in Russia, right next to Karl Marx’s statue. Get a clue lock-step, socialist, liberals!
Ya like talking about boots? Here’s an oldie for ya: “How do ya hide a liberal’s medicaid card? …. Put it in his work boots! Ha! I kill me!

**Tech will lose money on this game. Playing Jacksonville State and Spud Webb U in the same year is a disgrace. There will never be a ranking until you actually play somebody besides Va Tech who is also struggling.

Jeff, another great example of the GT crowd not thinking things through… They can’t find a real team to replace Army, so they buy Gardner-Webb. Then they can’t sell the G-W tickets, so they advertise them (in the AJC) for $12. I gave up my season tickets in the West stands the moment DanR asked for a bribe before he would honor my renewal. Hey Dan—sell the place out before you start gouging the season ticket holders. Anyway, Sounds like Booker will start, so I thought I’d take advantage of the $12 ticket. I go on-line and guess what ??!! The $12 ticket is really $15 and that assumes that you print it out at home. A $3 delivery charge??!! DanR, you’re still a jackass.

Jim Waddell: If you’re going to complain about a $15 ticket, you’ve got bigger problems than GT and Dan R. Get over it. I’m glad you gave up your seats.
