Reality hits Dogs like a truck

Athens — At least everybody matched. Does that count for something?

Players in black. Coaches in black. Fans in black. The high ranking — yeah, that was pretty much charred to black. Do you get points for that?

It was an all-day drunkfest in Athens, an electric atmosphere in Sanford Stadium — and then somebody had to go and pull the plug.

You know what? How about if we just stop assuming anything about this team from this point, either in stature, personality or direction. Seldom can one early season loss obliterate all theories but we just witnessed it. Forget all of the arguments about strength of schedule and Georgia getting jobbed on the rankings, because the only thing the Bulldogs accomplished Saturday night was smother all debates.

After losing to Alabama 41-30, in a game not nearly that close, Athens-to-No. 1 just isn’t showing up on Mapquest. Not today. Not next week. Possibly not for the rest of the season — at least not without reconstructed egos; an implausible run through the nation’s toughest schedule and a whole bunch of dominoes falling around them.

USC lost on Thursday. Florida lost Saturday. Georgia was in great shape until kickoff. Funny. The jerseys look a lot better when you’re not being overwhelmed by the moment, which was certainly the way it looked. Everything the Bulldogs were physically at South Carolina, they weren’t against Alabama. Everything they were offensively and defensively at Arizona State, they weren’t against Alabama.

Alabama was tougher, and smarter, and better. At everything.

“I don’t think we were overwhelmed,” defensive tackle Geno Atkins said. “I felt we were ready. They just came out and smacked us in the face and jumped on us.”

Guess what? When a team gets jumped 31-0 on its home field, it is not ready. The torsos may be nicely adorned in black jerseys. But the heads are somewhere else.

The team is now 4-1. A “1” has never seemed so fat.

A team doesn’t get lose like this, so convincingly, at home, on national TV, with so much at stake, without a hangover. This will take more than a few ice bags during the bye week to get over. Extensive therapy, maybe. It was 10-0 after the first quarter. It was 31-0 at halftime. Check?

Atkins again: “It was sort of surreal how quickly they scored 31 points.”

Georgia fans came to watch the best team in the nation, and maybe they did. Just not the team they expected. Alabama is 5-0 and might not be tested until going to LSU on Nov. 8.

The Bulldogs? They seemed to pass every test at ASU, only to self-immolate at home. If they were consistent in one area, it was the wrong area. They entered as the nation’s most penalized team, and will exit as the same. They had six in the first half, 10 in the game covering 81 yards. They had two roughing-the-passer calls, one negating an Alabama fumble and both leading to a 10-0 lead.

The Tide scored on all five first-half possessions. A shanked punt (19 yards) led to one scoring drive. A mid-air bobble by flanker A.J. Green, which was picked off by Alabama’s Dont’a Hightower, led to another. Lazy coverage led Julio Jones to slip into the back of the end zone alone to cradle a 22-yard touchdown with 1:25 left in the half.

That made it 31-0, a deficit Georgia hadn’t seen since a home loss to Auburn nine years ago, two years before Mark Richt’s arrival.

The Bulldogs tried to come back. A field goal, a touchdown drive and a 92-yard punt return by Prince Miller in the second half closed the score to 31-17. But they had already been lapped. Bama was on autopilot.

The second-half comeback — sorry, only window dressing.

Great teams don’t lay an egg like this. Not at home. Not on this stage. Not with so much at stake.

Now comes the bye week. It’s a good time to heal the egos.

If nothing else, it will be quiet. Nobody will be arguing.

The last time the Dawgs lost they ripped off about a dozen wins, more than enough to get back into the race. The title game will have a one or two loss team in it, if not both teams. Trust me, Southern Cal, Florida, Wisconsin and Georgia all have a chance to get there, and I, for one, think UGA has a great shot. Few, if any, expected the Dawgs to go undefeated. Now that this loss is out of they way they can go to work. Ask the New England Patriots if they would have preferred to get their loss for the season out of the way early. I feel pretty good about a rebound, ‘cause every dog can have a bad day… and that one is now out of the way. Go Dawgs! You can still do it!

Jeff, I have a lot of UGA friends, and I like all of them, because we have mutual respect for each other and each other’s team. You, on the other hand, take every opportunity to run down Alabama and Coach Saban. You’re a sorry, no-good, son-of-a gun. (I cleaned that up big time.) Like Dr. Witt, the president of the University of Alabama said, when jackasses like you were criticizing us for paying the best coach in America what he was worth, “He’s a bargain at what we are paying him!”

Barkin’ Dog — you’re deluded. There may be a one-loss team in the title game, but it ain’t going to be one who lost by double-digits, at one point down over 30, at home on national TV. Sorry dude. 1980 gets farther and farther away, I know.

Another penalty was missed on the punt that was returned for a score. A Georgia player blocked an Alabama defender that was already out of bounds. Lots of points scored in Garbage Time.

Soak it up—this is what….the first time Alabama has beaten UGA since when???? I give Bama credit—they looked good and had a good plan. Georgia (as Jeff mentioned) confirmed their penalty status as the best when it comes to yellow laundry on the field—but enough excuses aside—Bama won the game. Time to move on!

Georgia sure looked bad in the first half.

Alabama sure looked good in the first half.

Folks, there is a lot of football yet to be played. A lot of very good games yet to be played. Remember last season’s LSU team went through the meat of their schedule winning against the elite teams only to lose to Kentucky and Arkansas. We surely don’t know what will happen by the end of the season.

Given how young the Bulldogs are this loss will certainly be a test of character … do they step up and “finish the drill” for the remainder of the season, or do the collapse on themselves?

I forgot to mention it in my previous post:

Can Georgia catch a break from injuries?

Sturdivant, Owens, Ellerbe (who knows the serverity?), Durham (I read that his injury “[didn’t] look good,” although he was sitting on the sideline.

I think our defensive secondary and special teams will get a boost from Banks being back against Tennessee and I feel fairly certain our offense will improve with Southerland is back.

Don’t overlook that we haven’t seen the Dawgs line up and play Georgia football yet. They’ve used three and four WR sets on most downs thus far this season.

We may have lost this game, but those black jerseys looked sweet. And that mohawk that Knowshon was sportin’? Smoove. Hey, Bulldogs, remember that FSU rap tape that Richt showed you a month or so ago and the story that went with it? Ba-zing! Hey, Georgia fans, remember holding your pee-pees after beating Central Michigan and complaining to ESPN that we never get any respect? S.E.C. football is about showing up in big games and smashing the other guy in the mouth. Next year, fans and players, let’s do that maybe once before getting cocky. This was inevitable.

I’m as big a UGA fan as anyone else. But you could see this coming a mile away. Penalties, jet lag, and inferior on both offensive & defensive lines. They were bigger & more experienced. This game was lost on the coin flip. If we get the ball first, it may have been different. But when they drove the ball right down our throat, and we helped them do it, it was over. We thought the jerseys would win the game. When they kept the ball for almost half the quarter and ran their offense at will, it was over. We were stunned and could not recover. If we don’t become more discipline and cut down on the stupid penalties, it doesn’t matter how talented we are. Better teams take advantage and that’s what the Tide did tonight. We looked like we should not even be ranked. We were outplayed, outcoached and it was embarrassing. We have a LONG way to go if you’re thinking National Title, a long way.

Wait a second lets give some respect to the awesome SEC who saw a Miss State team that got trounced 38-7 last week compete with the team that is the favorite to win the conference (LSU). A conference that saw its east favorite bury its embarrassing face in the pavement like it does every year. (UGA) It must be fun to wear black to your own funeral, or maybe it represents the asphalt you just wiped your face in. The SEC is like Paris Hilton it gets attention because of all of its glamor but is as lame as the gray matter that makes up its athletic brain.

So Jeff, when Alabama loses, and they will, is the team that beats them the next “great team”? Bama whipped UGA tonight on both sides of the ball. But they are not a great team. Great teams have depth. Bama is one or two injuries away from 4 losses. Chances are they will win the west, if they can stay healthy. But winning the west this year may not be much of an accomplishment. Auburn can’t score to save their lives and LSU barely has an offense themselves. The fact that Bama can actually move the ball gives them an advantage. It does not make them great.

The season isn’t over with one loss, but the team I saw tonight will lose more. The only way we could pressure on the QB was to rough him in the second half. What in the world is going on with the pass defense????!!!! John Parker Wilson is just an average QB and we made him look like an All American. Sad. Sad. Sad.

Once again, good run defense. I don’t know how many yards we gave up, but not many when it counted. But, nobody needs to run on us.

OK…OK..yea UGA got beat at home by Alabama we can all agree on that! But one thing showed up tonight that played a big part in the loss….Injuries! Losing Ellerbe on first drive was huge….then someone who went under the radar, Kris Durham…remember those drops by Moore early 4th qtr, he was for K-D. Back to Ellerbe, yeah Curran gets all the tackles and pub but Darnell is freeing him by taking on blockers every play. Also Dent cannot play MLB every snap like he did..he is a spot player for Ellerbe. And HOW MANY INJURIES DID ALABAMA IN THE GAME? NONE…ZERO…matter of fact they have suffered an huge injury all season e.i. Marcus Washington, Trinton Sturdivant, Jeff Owens! then i almost really UGA’s best run-stuffing DE in Rod Battle did not play! does anyone has something to say?

COMMENTS - on present and the future

I saw a team that at the least didn’t completely roll over and die - however they looked like garbage in the first half.

A friend of mine said it best - over the last 6 years, the Dawgs have won, but they won DESPITE of their offensive line and never because of it, and the trend continues. Alabama won with mountain movers int he trenches. The good news, lots of talent up front, and more coming in young. The bad news, it took 4 years to get to that level, and we need one more to get over the hump. The worse news….

Based on what I can see, the NFL is redoing the rookie cap, and that could drastically affect guys like Moreno and Stafford. If its redone, expect one or both of them to leave this year. So we’ll have a much better line next year on both sides, but we lose the skill positions of Massaquoi, and possibly Stafford and Moreno. Gray, King, and Green is not nearly as intimidating (BUT not bad either)

So, where do we stand from here? The SEC east truly doesn’t look like the beast it always has this year, and no one from the West save Alabama looks dominating. LSU’s defense is doooown and Auburn’s offense is abyssmal. It’s a winnable schedule, and we have 2 weeks to rest, get healthy, and hopefully the coaching staff does two things.

1) MAKE IT KNOWN that champions don’t let someone coming in to your house and get whalloped like that - injuries and long road trips be dammed.

2) Get them angry AND more disciplined. The penalties are horrific - and its not just the number, but the type. Its not a 5 yearder when you were on 3rd and 16 that just makes it longer, its a 10-15 yard personal foul or interference that keeps a drive alive (or kills your own) If that doesn’t stop, the season’s over.

So, how do things look? Texas, Oklahoma, and Missou all play one another. UGA should drop like a rock to #7 or 8, maybe 9. So play every week, and if you string together a good stretch, AND make it to the SEC championship in a division that is up for grabs, things can turn out OK. THE ABSOLUTE BEST THING - Bama wins out and we play em in Atlanta and pull out a win (which remains to be seen if that’s possible).

UGA controlls its own destiny - so lets see how it plays out much like last year. It’s tough to face what UGA has the first 4 weeks of the season. You lose your backside tackle and your best DE within 8 minutes of the season beginning. Your best FB ever (blocking esp) out until tonight. I thnk they’ll be allright, but its up to the coaching staff to get focused. For the guy I saw post earlier about letting the hounds loose, blitzing, and letting the guys in the D backfield play cover 2 or man to man - we don’t have the kind of guys to do that. jones, Byrd, Prince, and Allen are good - Allen is a pro. BUT - they’re not good enough to go man to man all night long. Sorry.

Have a good one - and Go Dawgs!!

Alabama is good…not great! What will hurt them when they face a team similiar or mirror image like LSU! If they beat LSU in Baton Rouge then they have become great team! But saying they are Auburn of 2004 because they not and far from it! LSU will dominate Alabama! does anyone disagree with me?

How about shoving 41-30 up your a.. for street cred. You are a pathetic joke to insist risking personal injury to a player is good for your teams mojo. As was said before this loss was seen a long time ago. The DAWGS HAVE NOT PLAYED A COMPLETE GAME IN A VERY LONG TIME. I have ALWAYS BEEN NERVOUS ABOUT THESE DAWGS. I am so tired of our quarterback talking about going pro. Please go pro. Then we might get a quarterback who cares about a college game for 4 quarters. First off, I love the Dawgs. That said, now time for tough love! I would not vote UGA in the Top 10. They would have to win three consecutives times before I would grant them a #10 spot. I have never been more ashamed of a non-performance! They stink, stank and stunk. Allowing an untalented bum team like Bama to build a 31-0 lead is completely unacceptable. The Dawgs could not have defeated USC (the California one) with this type of ball-less S++T! Forget the final cosmetic score. This was an old fashion A++kicking. IN SPADES! Not worthy of a ranked team. An embarrassment to an UNRANKED one! Is Bama that good? Hell no! Is Georgia that bad? Possibly. Only time will tell. That said, GO DAWGS! Torch black jerseys!

Jeff,

I agree with every point you made except for the “window dressing part”.Say what you will about how bad the Dawgs played tonight. But one has to admire the way that they fought back in the second half when the game was out of reach. Under Ray Goff and Jim Donnan, the Dawgs would have given up and probably lost that game 52-10 tonight. But Mark Richt and his staff to their credit have instilled pride in their players to never give up no matter how bad things get. Even Nick Saban was impressed with the way the Dawgs battled back in a losing effort as well as taking his team to task for not breaking the Dawgs back when they had the chance. Saban knows that is something that plagued his team last season and could cost them this year if they don’t remedy it. And the nice thing about this time in the season for the Dawgs is that they will have a bye week next week which will give them sometime to heal up, learn from their mistakes, and get ready to play Tennessee which has absolutely owned the Dawgs the last 2 seasons. If I were Tennessee I’d be worried! The Dawgs are dangerous when their backs are against the wall( especially after a bye week), and the Vol offense is absolutely putrid this season! So let’s keep perspective here! This weekend proved that nobody is unbeatable, which means that there are a LOT of very good 1 loss teams out there. And losing to the 8# team in the nation is nowhere near as bad as losing to and unranked opponent ala USC and Florida.

Dawg fans…man, you’re a bitter bunch! Face it, the days of Bama as a door mat are over. Bama whipped you guys BAD on national TV between the hedges. And you can’t stand it do you’ll lay out a bunch of BS “Bama will lose at least three…Bama isn’t better than we are…Bama is overrated”. Hate to tell you…I think you were the overrated ones! Hope you enjoyed those “black” funeral jerseys…I doubt you’ll be seeing them any time soon. ROLL TIDE!!!

This is what happens when you dont handle your business so dont get mad at LSU for knocking you out the BCS championship game. We handle our business we win the big games 6 straight versus top 10 and 4 straight on the road. Georgia was overrated since the preseason magz came out. Championships LSU 3 Georgia 1

It’s humbling… But correct.

We are not a Top 10 team. Heck, I have serious doubts about being a Top 25 team right now… But definitely not a top 10.

We will lose Knowshon, Stafford, Mo Mass, Ellerbe, Maybe Allen, Byrd, and Maybe Jones. Will Logan Gray and Caleb be able to shock some people? Who knows? That is why we are Georgia fans.

As far as this year… That was the worse loss since ‘98 Auburn. I don’t feel as bad as Yech in ‘00 (which was the worse loss in the history of the program) but this is the type of loss that will end a season.

We will lose 4-5 games this year. It sucks, but it is the reality. No miracles this year. I just hope we beat Yech because I can’t take another offseason in my lifetime where the nerds are bragging over a win over GA.

Nick Saban knows what it takes to win in the SEC. Stop the run and run the ball.

Will Bama win the west? Nah. They aren’t that good yet. They will lose 2-3 games.

That is what makes it even more humbling. We got whipped by an ‘above average’ team and not a dominant team. This is going to be a long season.

I’m pleased to see that Ga Tech fans can enjoy a UGA loss - so long as its not at the expense of their pathetic program.

Tell ya what Tech fans… you can talk smack towards Georgia fans when….

  • You actually beat us, AND

  • When your athletic department doesn’t need to buyu pop-up ads on the AJC.com to sell home game tickets, k?

  • About the game…… I swear to ya, I worried about this game all week. Our line was being tinkered with while theirs was as stout as any in the land. Mistakes aside, that’s how it went; if we were a more disciplined, less-penalized team, we’d have still had a shot to win this game, though; but Stafford was trying too hard and seemed to lose his compusre way too early to help us in the 2nd quarter.

Yeah, the A.J.Green bobble-interception was just a fluke; but what wasn’t a fluke was, to me, the players’ getting FAT too caught up in all thie “blackout” drivel. I worried just as much, all week, about the players thinking that a stadium full of black and their black jerseys assured a Georgia victory. I worried Thursday night that too many Bulldog players might be awake watching the USC game and not getting enough sleep and study time in for their game.

Say this about ‘em… they showed a lot of heart in the 2nd half, and damn-near made a game of this. That’s the fire they need to play with the rest of the way.

There’s still plenty to play for; if they win out and meet Alabama in the SEC championship game and beat ‘em, they’ll still play for the BCS national title game.

And rest assured, ‘Bama knows they got us on one of our rare bad days. They were thoroughly out-played the 2nd half, and if we played ‘em like that the whole game, we’d have coem out on top.

No excuse, though; they were the better team tonight, from top-to-bottom and in-between. I just hope we earn another crack at them.

I grew up in GA. and am an alumni of Ala. I am very proud of the way Ala. has played with such physical and mental intensity. I have been to National Championship Sugar Bowls and watching Bama since the 70’s, but I will have to say the first half was the most complete half of football I can remember an Ala team playing in such a big stage. GA is a very good team and Richt is a class act! They will bounce back and we may meet again in Atlanta. I wll have to say that I try not to get caught up in comments on internet blogs, but I have to sadly say that I am embarrassed by some of the morons that have posted such classless comments after the game by both sides. These are two class act schools with a great, competitive, and respected rivalry. Even in the heat of a huge game on a national stage did you see any fights in the game. There was nothing but respect after the game from the players. Too bad some ignorant fans cannot display the same sportsmanship. It is a game which I am passionate about and I love dearly. But, it is a game. I will bet these people would not be proud to show their Mother’s the tasteless comments that I have read tonight. This is a game I always look forward to and wish it happened more often. Good luck to Mark Richt and Georgia the rest of the season and congratulations to Nick Saban and Alabama for a very impressive win. There is a lot of football to be played and there are no weeks off in the SEC. Roll Tide!!

Yeah, we got beat tonight. Badly. But the season is not over. We didn’t lose to an unranked team, (USC, Florida) and there is plenty of time to make this up. Look at Bama last year when they faded at the end….they lose 3 games this year, if not, we will see them again in Atlanta and get revenge. I am not worried about this loss. I just love how all the people talking so much Alabama smack responded so quickly to this article. If you were that big of fans, you would have been at the game and not had time to get home to post. Just a bunch of couch loving pansies. Don’t gp support your team in person, just talk trash over the internet. Respectible.

“Blackout backfired”, what a dumb a* statement. We won two games last year while wearing the black jerseys, those wins were not because of the jerseys. We lost to Alabama while wearing the black jerseys, the loss was not because of the black jerseys. Alabama played a better game. We made about 6 games worth of mistakes in one half. I said to myself at the beginning of the season, we have true freshmen, true sophomores, and redshirt freshmen everywhere at the most important positions in football and we are ranked top 5 in the country. I always remembered, no matter what we do this season, that VERY young team will only get better.

TOO MUCH HYPE … Georgia has been hyped all pre-season as NUMBER 1 … then they drop to No. 2 and all cry “We’re undefeated and why did we drop?” We should be No. 1! Then Coach Tricky convinced us “Black-outs” win games … well I don’t think he meant we should play as though we are “blacked-out” or “passed-out”. This just shows how bad players really do read “their press” and believe it all … then comes the gut check … WELCOME BACK TO THE REAL GAME OF FOOTBALL!!!!!

Mr. Shultz and Mr. Bradley as far as burying this team goes, the latest time I looked at the top 10, 1,3, and 4 lost. LSU barely got by Mississippi State. Im’a figurin’ those to be some pretty good teams that got their fannies beat this weekend. And we ain’t even half way through the season yet!

Everyone in the nation said that the national champion will have at least one loss this year and I was thinking that included Georgia.

Now the mark of a great team or for that matter even a poor team, is not found in one game: it is found in the balance of a teams season. The mark of the greatness will be found for this team in how they respond. Bama may go out and lay an egg and Auburn ain’t no push over. Tennessee just may squash their elephant.

Georgia’s injuries, to which you didn’t mention did factor going into this season and especially into this game. We could have used those big ole linemen last night and it will be interesting to see who steps up to fill the void.

So concerning the sensationalism that must befit those of you in the writing profession, it ain’t over til Georgia and Bama meet in Atlanta in December. I believe that what you and the others in your profession wrote to be correct in judging the value of this team. Richt will respond in making this team better - that is his record. But concerning this loss, Whatacrock dang it, Whatacrock.

IF UGA makes it (still got to play LSU,TN,AU,FL) and if you thought Bama was bad, what do you think of that line up. Stafford is an average quarterback (check his rating). Dogs do this every year and get WAY ahead of themselves. Quit trying the hype thing and play football. Celebration penalties and black T-shirts don’t win games.

Everybody get real, Saban said after the game we had a good plan. TV crew said Saban called a perfect first half. We were outcoached, period! It happens! Every throw in their first drive their receiver was all alone! Go figure! I think Bobo called a terrible game, he’s no match and should have been helped by Richt with game plan. I think Richt took over play calling after the big lead when he had the head phones on. IF we are lucky, we can meet Bama again in the SEC championship game. Coach Richt can’t let Bobo run the game plan alone. He’s not experienced enough!

Jeff, Nice column on blistering the dogs while stating the obvious. What you did not mention was the good fortune Alabama received during the first four drives in way of penalties and a freak fumble from AJ. The first penalty not only negated a turnover and squelched early momentum but extended a drive inside the 10 leading to the first touchdown. If this team is fortunate enough for a rematch in Atlanta I think they will redeem themselves.

C’mon everybody!!! This is the SEC!!! It may end up being very timely, to lose this early…if it strengthens the team’s resolve, places inflated egos in proper perspective, motivates the coaches to produce less readable schemes, and places us as a sleeper against LSU and UF. We still have a chance. This team plays better with a chip on its shoulder. We shall see…

Georgia has been in the top of the recruiting list for the last five years yet has not been in the national title game YET! Mark Richt has been coach of those teams; Nick Saban just got to Alabama, yet he already has ‘Bama in position to particpate in the national title hunt; If Georgia fans are satisfied with Richt, then Georgia fans are satisfied with average seasons of success. Georgia will not be a legitimate contender until Richt is GONE!!! Where has he done with all of that talent that he is supposedly recruiting every year. When is he to use it? Also, Stafford breaks up good protection by running out of it when there is no breakdown. He was outplayed by JP Wilson!!! One blogger was right!! He is just like Jeff George… a great arm and nothing else; and Richt went to Texas for him?! Nick Saban completely outcoached Mark “who has no clue” Richt. Richts’ team does not have the fire or enough emotion to win on the big stage! Preachers belong on the pulpit, not on the sidelines!

THIS GUY HAS IT EXACTLY RIGHT MARK HIS WORDS NONBELIEVERS:

It is obvious our current quarterback is not the answer. He continually throws off his back foot, into double and triple coverage, and has no concept of what “airing” the ball out means. We will not go anywhere with Matthew Stafford as our quarterback. Bring on Logan Gray or Aaron Murray…they can’t be any worse!

You cannot always win football games when a team has so many penalties. The coaches have got to discipline players who make unnecessary penalties like head hunting a quarterback. This game proved that.

Sure, UGA fans are obnoxious when they’re winning (but then again, who isn’t?), but all of you haters just show your weakness by letting them get under you skin. UGA is fine… bad loss for sure, but like ALWAYS, we’ll find away to finish highly rated, unlike most other schools who make a great run every 4-5 years, then go back to being average in other years.

First off, congratulations to Alabama. Saban clearly has a knack for getting the most out of his team in big games. It was like men against boys along the line of scrimmage in the first half which basically set the tone the whole way. As Saban also pointed out, Georgia should be commended for the way the adjusted and responded to adversity. This was a hard lesson to learn but it could be what focuses the team for the remainder of the schedule. Beyond that, if we had to have a reality check like this, we’re much better off getting it against a western opponent. In the east, we could’ve pretty much kissed off our SEC and beyond aspirations. However, all the goals are still obtainable and we just have to get grounded and back to business to make them happen.

Okay, I have read and heard enough crap to last a lifetime. If you wanted to report the real story how about before the game even started I dont know how many people witnessed this but one of the refs gave #40 on the Alabama team a low five-so what does that tell you-it makes all of the unbelieveable game calling understandable. I have to give it to Alabama they did a great job but you have to let the teams play the game and not let the refs make the game. I sit in the Ga Alumni section but had an Alabama player setting beside me and he said-we paid the refs more tonight than you guys. I told him it was obvious but they should try to at least try to make it look good. So even the Alabama fans were admitting to the game calling in the first half. I admit that Georgia did not look ready the first half but could have done better if the refs would have stayed out of the game but it was obvious this game was over before it begun according to the refs. Second half was better but the refs knew they had already done their job. Lets face it the refs control all the games it is according to whom their want and they are not going to let the #1,#3 and #4 teams sit at the top all season long, they have to stir things up-its sad that it has come to this. But once a dawg fan always a dawg fan and the dawgs were not big headed just excited and it call starting new traditions and the blackout is tradition TM, a tradition that Mark Richt started and show respect to his players and fans its called pulling together the DAWG NATION- IM GEORGIA WIN OR LOSE and every fan of every team should feel this way. GO DAWGS and Alabama we hope to see you in Atlanta! Thanks everybody for the blackout, I”ll be glad to wear my blackout shirt anytime! AJC gets some real writers!

So much of the talk on this board is about emotion, non-strategic stuff. Here, I think, is the simplest breakdown of last night’s loss:

  • Penalties - Ala. was much more discipline

  • The running game - Ala. worked hard to establish their running game; we gave Knowshon (the best RB in America) 5 carries in the first half and we began our first possession of the game in the shotgun—talk about soft! What happened to the I formation?

  • Aggressive Def. - Ala. mans up and brings pressure; we play soft zone coverage with little to no pressure. I hate the way we play Def. The few times in the 3rd Q when we brought pressure good things happened. Too late!

  • Anyone agree or disagree? I would like to hear someone else’s thoughts on this, particularly our Def. philosophy.

Two years!! Just two years Saban has been in the SEC and at Alabama! Already he has ‘Bama more respected than Georgia! The program at Georgia is not going to reach the pinnacle of college football under the guidance of Mark Richt. He’s had seven years and THIS is as far, and as much as the Dogs have and can accomplish??A ridicueing loss on national TV! Look over at Florida. Myer just arrived at Gainesville; yet the Gators have national title uner his guidance already! Players like their second string quarterback from Atlanta(Cameron Newton! how did Richt let this kid get away?) chose to play at Fla; that do everything player from Lowndes (Valdosta) high school, Greg Reed chose Fla over Georgia, why? ‘Cause they perceive Myer to be a better coach than Richt. These same Georgia bred players will come back and help beat Richt and Georgia. Georgia fans the reason the Dogs get no respect from the nation is because the nation does not respect Richt as a great coach. Did anyone notice how many catches AJ Green had in the first half against Arizona State? At the halftime interview, Richt said that he’d have to continue to get the ball to Green in the second half, yet, Green did not get the ball in the second half. Richt is not a great coach to go to battle with. He is not tough enough, thus his teams are not tough enough. Now Paul Johnson is a tough enough coach to go to battle with. If he was at Georgia, I’d bet the farm that he’d had won a national title by now. Matter of fact not only will he beat the Dogs this year, but he’ll win a national title before the Dogs will with Mark Richt. Dog fans don’t be fooled by the points Ga put up in the second half. Bama eased up. The game was not even close. I’m a Dog fan, but I’m a realist. The Dogs under Richt ain’t going any further than the level of AVERAGE!

    It’s still EARLY.

This is the usual UGA stinkfest in September. They don’t matchup with Bama at all, too young, and not physical enough. As much as we say it year in and year out this is not last years team. No Jeff Owens and no Sturdivant showed up last night. Heck no Marcus Washington either. This team is not as good as they were in the summer. They’ll get better. Win the East. Give yourself a chance in the SEC championship. Put yourself back into the argument. Keep your heads up Dawg fans. This is the first year Bama has had something to cheer about since the 1999 season. It happens to everybody. They’re a freaking good team.

Now our schedule really looks scary——we will probably lose at least 2-3 more games and end up 19 or 20 in the nation if we are lucky. I tell you —nobody likes what some of these folks are saying on here—-but it appears they are right—-year after year we talk about a top 5 recruiting class and we get all excited—-i know i was and spent good hard earned money on tickets and then we get KILLED AT HOME—-i was there with 93,000 more and i tell you 50,000 plus of us are fed up with thugs and preachers. let’s get a fresh start with a fiery coach that CARES about something other than looking pretty for the cameras and making us look foolish on the national stage. UGA football team is way too talented to resort to gimmicks like blackout. Fun for the fans, but I think a distraction for the players. Your team needs more discipline and preparation; you have the athletes. How about finding other ways to get Moreno the ball, when you can’t just hand it off to him (down by 31)? He’s one of the best athletes in nation, and was a non-factor. I think Richt is a good coach, and I have a lot of respect for him, but his teams are starting to remind me of the old FSU teams. He’s better than that.

What is it with these Jersey’s? Green for ND, Gold for TECH, Black for UGA a feather for Dumbo. Give me a break. I would bury those black jersey’s so far in the back of the equipment room they would never see the light of day. It was a distraction and I feel it contributed to the loss because once things went wrong it added ever so slighly to the confusion on the field. I know UGA is much better than this.

Frustrated - I think that we probably didn’t bring a lot of pressure because 1. We knew they were going to be running it a lot and wanted to stay in our base defense to allow our speedy linebackers to make plays. 2. We had no way of knowing that Wilson would have the game of his life. He was practically perfect in hitting every throw out there. Now, I agree that we should’ve brought pressure on him earlier to disrupt his obvious rhythm but that’s just hind sight. 3. Alabama’s offensive line is a dominant one and we knew that going in. We may have elected to play zone instead of blitzing for fear of not getting to the quarterback consistently. That’s usually a recipe for getting burned which happened often enough anyway.

On a side note - just wow about that nose tacklet Cody. That guy looked like a sumo wrestler out there. I think that we have a future star in Ben Jones the way the true freshman stood up against that wooley mammoth.

Richt should be embarrassed to look at himself in the mirror. He has the best talent in the world (i.e. look at how many guys they have in the pros) and no one to coach them. Martinez and BoBo are absolutely horrible. No wonder they are so good against the run, no one tries to run on them, why would you when the worst passer in the world can throw on them. Against GA. You either complete it or you get a penalty. Prince Miller couldnt cover me. Also your defensive coordinator is also your secondary coach. Richt doesnt have the mental toughness to coach a national champion, he’s too worried where his next missionary trip is going to be. There will never be a national champion at Ga. as long as he’s there. Mark my word (no pun intended)

LSU wins national title with two losses. Did they pack it in? Does anybody remember who they lost too? I do.

Is it hard to swallow? YES! Is the season over? Not by a long shot. Did anybody really believe they would go undefeated? I didn’t.

The second tier team down the road that hasn’t won a meaningful game in years can take pot shots but hey that’s what second tier teams do. You can’t give their damn tickets away.

When was the last time they beat UGA? They don’t even compare. Let them have have their day. Until they play another real team and get their a*’s beat they will chirp.

Georgia’s loss is not as bad as Florida or USC and Its not the end of the season, I’m sure Georgia will rebound and I do believe that Georgia will beat Alabama if they meet again at the dome, and it is definitely a high possibility if you watch Florida and Tennessee play. however, this loss is on the shoulder of The DC Martinez, again it showed how inconsistent he is. and plain dummass. ALABAMA’S QB looked like Tom Brady. our defense again was so predictable and Alabama kept doing the same thing over and over without any adjustment. Alabama was running the ball mostly on 1st and 2nd down get 2 to 5 yards then a short completion, nothing fancy. and we never challenged those short completion. it just disgusted me. its like stealing my money. I can’t understand why our defense was playing the deep route all the way, and it was easily tricked. Martinez as the defensive backs coach was below average, as DC is well below average, I never liked his zone defense schemes and his addiction to it. Martinez was a bad decision to replace vangorden. go dawgs

When I saw the Ga-SC game I was angry. Despite the victory…I saw a Ga team that looked beaten in the trenches by a not so good S Car team.

For the past 2 seasons…this Ga team has suffered lapses and for stretches…they just plain played bad football.

Case in point….Ten 35 Ga 14 last year….SC 16 Ga 12 last year. They were not playing well at all at that point.

Remember the year before? Losing to both KY and Vandy?

Folks…this season is no different. The Dawgs are currently not playing good football and they went up against a very good Bama team and it showed.

Ga has the potential to play as good as they did at the end of last season….that team just has to show back up….just like they did last year. Till then…its going to be tough.

    Jeff,

The fact that UGA was not prepared for Bama doesn’t mean they weren’t “jobbed” by dropping in the rankings. The fact that UGA lost does not change a thing about the polls. The media is wrong more often than they are right about who should be number 1. The polls are a flawed measure. Look at how seemingly wrong you guys were about bama.

The polls are garbage. All that matters is on field competition. If we waited to do polls until after the SEC championship game…we would not be talking about UGA getting “jobbed” by dropping in the polls. We’d be saying the race for the playoffs is not over.

ESPuke is relentless in their bias. You could see it as USC dominated the discussion since Thursday. UGA was number 1 and was hardly mentioned. The media said USC was clearly number 1—judged better than UGA and OK and they got beaten by an unranked team…a team by all accounts was not even second in their conference in talent. How many in the media said USC was not all that good? A very small percentage. How many are saying “I told you so” about UGA? The majority.

Did UGA get beaten? Yes. Were they “Jobbed” by the polls. Yes. The poll voters are biased and half the time uninformed. They are fed by ESPuke who is also biased.

UGA got whipped by bama…got out played and out coached. I tip my cap to the victors. And I say to the team…keep your heads up. You are better than you showed in the first half. The SEC race is all that matters, and you are still in it. Get back to playing the way you did to close the season last year and you will be in the championship game!

r u crazy - What specifically did I write that was incorrect? The story behind Cody coming into the game was that even with double teams, no offensive line had been able to block him so far. We put a 305 pound true freshman against this guy listed at 365 (if he skips breakfast) and leave him one on one for most of the night. He did pretty well given the situation and I can only imagine how good he’s going to be after a couple more years refining his technique and working out in the conditioning program. Ben Jones was a warrior out there and deserves to be commended.

    GeoffDawg and Frustrated,

There is NO excuse for not blitzing more in the first half. Getting burned quickly is better than getting the ball driven down our throats on a 6 minute drive. Nothing wears a defense down quicker than those long drives. At least we would have had more chances on Offense to figure out we needed to change what we were doing there too.

We got out coached and out played. It was smash mouth football and our guys didn’t play it for 60 minutes. Our coaches acted like they didn’t have a clue as to how to get the players more motivated during the game and they didn’t show any ability to adjust the game plan when we were getting manhandled.

The race is not over, but it quickly will be if the team plays another half of football like they did against bama. We have to play some pretty innovative coaches in the future and we need our coaches to juice up the game plan a little. Throw the other team and coaches off balance. Don’t just come out doing the same ol’—same ol’ because it worked before.

With all that said, I am a Dawg fan and I want our guys to have fun. We are not out of the race. We can still go to the SEC championship. So keep you heads up guys!

r u crazy - do you remember where we were under Ray Goff and Jim Donnan? We are immeasurably better now and lest we forget - they also pulled in top ranked recruiting classes every year. CMR has returned Georgia to being an elite program year in and year out and if you take a step back and look at the big picture, we’re going to be in the national conversation for the life of his coaching career. Even with a preseason #1 ranking, I don’t know of anyone who realistically though we’d go undefeated with our brutal schedule. Now that we’ve actually lost one, the sky is falling? Bama deserves all the praise in the world right now and IMO has done more than OK to earn the top spot. Don’t forget though that football is cyclical and it’s pretty rare for a team to be so dominant that it can play lights out the entire season. We haven’t hit our stride yet and who knows, Bama may be peaking too early. If we can beat Florida, we’ll probably have an opportunity to test that theory.

All right Bulldog fans, step back and breathe deeply, because the season is not over. The Dawgs still control their destiny to the SEC championship game. I was a lot more impressed with Georgia’s come back, than I was with Alabama’s win. Let’s just say that Alabama was great full that there was no more time at the end. They really lost their composure in the second half.

ace - The honor and decency of Mark Richt often plays a big part in attracting all those blue chip recruits to Athens. Parents want their kids under the tutelage of someon like him. This is also college, not the NFL. These kids are not only playing the greatest game in the world, they’re also learning how to be men and function in life after football. Would you rather have us graduating illiterate tailbacks like Auburn?

BCS Slave - I agree that Willie Marinez didn’t adjust quickly enough and has a bad habit of sticking with his game plan too long when it’s not working. However, I also don’t want to get into a blitz every play and let the chips fall where they may philosophy. Sounds a lot like John Tenuta to me and I certainly wouldn’t want him as our DC.

    GeoffDawg,

I was impressed with Jones. Cody is just an overweight slob of a player. He just takes up space in the middle. Our center played well against the over hyped Cody.

I think our O Line played better than I expected for a group that had played one game together. It is clear though, that we need more depth. Our skill players didn’t have their best night. Stafford’s arm is a wonder…but he threw into double coverage all night. He was rushed often, but his experience should help him get the ball where it needs to go. Could it be the offensive play calling?

I want to say a word about the penalties. There is NO WAY bama should have gotten through the game without more offensive holding being called. There is holding going on in every play for every O Line in the nation. How many holding calls hurt our drives? I think we are still paying for last year’s celebration in the endzone. I know we deserved the penalties that were called, but other teams have been getting a TON of no calls against us. We have been called on phantom tripping, pass interference and roughing the passer calls all year long. And we definitely have had more holding calls than our opponents. If the refs are being fair, there should be less of a disparity in those.

With all that said, I tip my cap to bama. We were out played and out coached. Good luck the rest of the way.

The REALITY is you can wear any color you want but if the team you are playing against has a better DLine, OLine, QB and coaching - you are going to lose.

    GeoffDawg,

When your game plan is not working, you do something to mix it up. Clearly we had no pass rush. After they held the ball for most of the first qtr, it was time to start blitzing and let the chips fall where they may. Our D was getting worn down against a big, physical O Line that plays in a run offense. The second qtr was the time to change up and we didn’t.

I’m not saying we should blitz all the time, but we can’t win consistently by rushing three or four down linemen. That has not been getting it done. We have to have enough variety in our rush packages and coverage packages to throw opposing qb’s off their game and we didn’t show that last night.

r u crazy - We did learn a lot about our team and we’ll be the better for it in the long run. We were obviously unfocused in the first half and bama was unfocused in the second half. They still won by a considerable margin and they’re obviously the better team right now. The off week couldn’t have come at a better time as we need a chance to recover from the physical and psychological hang over from this game. Since we were the best team in the country at the end of last year following that debacle against TN, what makes you think we can’t do it again?

BCS Slave - Re: the play calling, I think that we tend to forget that we’re young and inexperienced in areas other than at O line. Bobo is only in his second year and may not have been up to the challenge of matching wits with Saban at this point in his career. Maybe, CMR needs to let him make his mistakes against the Central Michigans and techs of the world but should take a bigger chunk of the play calling duties in games like these.

    RUCrazy—

Bama didn’t toy with use in the second half. You are not a Dawg fan at all. You are here to stir things up. Bama played their game in the second half…the same game they played in the first. They were playing ball control and they kept passing and running the ball. Play calling was the same, so are you saying bama players just quit in the second half? If they did, then they did pretty much what UGA did in the first half.

R U Crazy, we all know we were solidly beaten But I won’t say it was because bama players were that much better than UGA. They aren’t. They had a better first half. Their coaches were better than ours for this game. Their players did a better job for this game.

Good grief, UGA lost two games last year and look where they ended up. So called, “real football fans” like you were crapping on the team basically saying they were a bunch of losers. They were crapping over Martinez and Richt until the team turned it around and played with fire to end the season in the NC discussion.

Correction: One of the earlier blogs misrepresented the penalty overlooked on the punt return TD- it was actually a clear block in the back that led to that TD. Nothing to do with a guy being blocked out of bounds- he was clearly inbounds and ready to make the tackle when he got clipped. So like everyone is saying, this game was not nearly as close as the score would indicate. And to the UGA fans complaining about the refs, give me a break. Every call was legitimate and just plain stupidity from UGA. The block in the back was an obvious call overlooked in the hope that this “big matchup” might actually turn into a game at some point.

The Dawgs believed their own hype and Richt is responsible for that. He needs to leave planning game promotions to the UGA marketing department and instead focusing on getting his team ready for big games One thing you can say abut Saban is that he doesn’t put up with bloated egos. I realize we are a young team. And I realize Bobo is a young OC. But Richt still has control over the team. He should be setting the course and dictating tone. He has to tell his coordinators to make adjustments if they are not doing it.

I’d like to know if he is still calling plays or just how much input he has during a game. He carries a chart around with him that he studies during the game. I know he has some input.

And to you lame bama fans or bama pretend fans (tech imposters)…we make no excuses. We got out coached and out played in the game. We tip our hats to the victors. Hey Gang,

I spent $700-$800 to see crap; this type of football is the second time in two years (USC last year) that I have wasted my money on a GA team that was not prepared to play. Our secondary sucks out loud, our offensive and defensive lines got manhandled, and our offensive coordinator needs a crash course in play calling. Willie Martinez is not a first rate defensive coordinator; every year we get exploited by giving up huge points, and last night to a possession type of a team. The blackout crap and the running on the field crap after a touchdown is a bunch of crap. CMR you make $2MM+ a year, so this is your fault for not being able to motivate your team without gimmicks for a big game. I hope you kick some a$& during this bye week, because this team needs discipline. You and the boys let down bulldog nation big time last night. CMR stop being so cool; it’s ok to get excited from time to time, maybe you should learn how to chew some players, coaches, and referee’s a%%$$ in order to light a fire and get them in the game.

Your depth is no where near as good as advertised…The next four games will determine your season, don’t forget Ga Tech. They may be two years away, but they could make things interesting….CMR will have to prove he can really coach, and manage people and pressure.

You are right about the punt return no call. The replays clearly show a UGA helmet in front of that bama player. Most of the time…and you lame bama fans are so starved for a winning program you can’t see objectively…most of the time that is a no call. Even the announcers of the game said it was not a block in the back.

As for us complaining about refs…we have good reason. We’ve seen all our game and watched them intensely. We’ve seen replays on phantom calls. I record the games and play them back. I see the number of no calls in a game and know that other teams are just as guilty as UGA and aren’t called while UGA is getting 100 yds a game in penalties. Even you idiots could see it if you took the time to look.

Still, this is no excuse. We got out coached and out played. We tip our cap to the victors. You were better in THIS game.

The polls are crap. We need a playoff system. I don’t care if it is UGA or Auburn, or Missouri or whoever…someone gets shafted by this sham of a system every year. EVERY YEAR!

Bama fans best learn now…the polls don’t mean a thing. They get you talked about…they also put a bullseye on your chest. Your schedule is weaker than UGA’s this year and you have struggled in a game this year. So don’t think you are all ThAT. You won’t take anyone by surprise and you can be beaten.

We need a playoff. The poll voters were wrong about USC and UGA and UF. We’ve all lost a game. They don’t know what they’re talking about with bama either.

My agenda is not to get UGA into the NC. I don’t respect that beauty contest. I prefer the teams to line up in a playoff and if bama beats UGA in a playoff…then so be it. At least I have one consolation…when bama gets shafted in the polls, maybe more of your fans will join in SCREAMING for a playoff.

The Dogs have to do 2 things to win the conference, take out UT and GOOD OLE FU. One thing I have to note…UGA is a slow starting team. We don’t get going well until the 5th or 6th game every year. We usually have one or two losses before we finally start to play aggressively. Why is that? Even in games, we seem to start slowly, getting behind before we play better.

I think this shows the character of the team is aggressive. I question if Richt’s low key approach is causing to team to act out of character. We seem to want to play with our backs against a wall. We seem to need to be losing to play better.

Why can’t we start the game with the same urgency we show while behind?

How many games do we have to penalize ourselves into oblivion before that starts to get better? You don’t want to crush their spirit? Hell, I’d rather YOU do it, than the opposing team. The talent is there, but alas, I fear the coaching is not. We have the Bobby Cox of college football running the show in Athens. He’ll consistently field a quality team, but never one that’s going to bring a BCS title to Athens. Why don’t the fanbase vigorously petition the UGA Athletic Dept. to further reduce the already ultra-pathetic academic “standards”. I would also strive for 100% “special admissions” - since 91% isn’t cutting it.

    College Football = 100% business / 0% academics

Hey - I know why UGA didn’t play well - too many of their players were busily studying for huge tests this weeks and the football was pretty much an afterthought!!!!

And people paid hundreds and hundreds of dollars and drove many, many hours just to watch 11.5 minutes of actual action (which was over by mid-way in the 2nd quarter anyway).

    RU,

I’m saying our coaching needs an adjustment…I think Richt is a good coach. I just question play calling in the game and the trend I’ve noticed. The staff is not doing something right if we can’t see adjustments being made early enough in the game to matter.

If we’d have played no huddle in the first half, we might have worn THEIR defense down a little. If we had taken a couple of chances in the first half by blitzing, we might have disrupted the passing of JPW who is just a marginal qb.

I won’t give up on Richt. He showed us last year he has the fire in him. Let the team have fun in the game and please…let them play aggressively.

As far as the penalties and refs, PLEASE stop your whining and blaming. It was a block in the back, and when you review the film watch for all the UA Off line holds that were also no calls. I mean they were jersey grabbing to prevent the UA D lineman from pursuing the play. Or the other intentional grounding that was not called.

Here’s one from the funnyman Jeff Schultz from late August:

“Clemson vs. Alabama: Just wondering what feels worse in Tuscaloosa: Nick Saban taking you to Shreveport in his first season, or going into the second knowing Tommy Bowden is so much closer to winning a conference title than you are? Tigers cover 41/2.”

When are UGA fans gonna learn? YOU’RE NOT AS GOOD AS YOU THINK YOU ARE! You almost loose to South Carolina, you haven’t played anybody worth mentioning up to this point, your secondary is soft, the d line needs to speed up, and you thought you could beat a team as good as ALABAMA? Quit blamming the injuries, penalties, and loosing Munson. Moreno is good but not Hiesman good, Stafford is unpatient in the pocket and has poor field vision, and your recievers just can’t cut it against a good defense. Now that the truth is exposed to the nation, go ahead and admitt it UGA…. You were pretending all along.

    BamaNGa,

If you could read better, you’d have seen that I have taken it like “a man” as you say. I grew up in GA and live in Alabama now and let me tell you…your response reminds me of how STUPID people in Alabama are.

I have played back the recording. As I said, there are plenty of no calls on both sides…but the calls against UGA have been, over the course of five games, been disproportionate. You go back and study the film of UGA’s games you moron and THEN come in here and criticize other people’s views.

It idiots like you that give all people in Alabama a bad name.

CMR has some problems to deal with… a big one: Discipline. Always has been. Never dealt with.

Championship teams don’t lead the nation in penalities.

Championship teams don’t lose focus and choke.

At least this happened early. This team has talent that may or may not be realized.

Florida, LSU, Auburn all in the future. There is time to save this season.

Time to see if this team and this coach have what it takes to live in the SEC.

CMR is a top ten coach. Under him Georgia will be a top ten team, but he is not national championship material.

    Jake,

LOL. Seemed to be good enough to beat bama last year. Seemed to be good enough to 12 straight games playing through the heart of the SEC schedule last year and into this year. If you want to say bama is great, all you got is THIS YEAR’s game. If you try to use media “experts” well, we see, by your logic, that they don’t know what they are talking about.

Go on thinking that you are all that. Your turn will come.

This is no excuse for our losing, but if you want to claim that bama is all world now…You’ve really only played one game against a good SEC team (UGA). Clemson has been proven weak in the past five games. UGA is playing with a makeshift line on both sides of the ball. Our RB can’t go through holes that aren’t there. Injuries have taken a toll this year. Go on thinking you are all that. Your time will come.

One other thing…If you want to say your win proves you are good…shouldn’t you be praising UGA? I guess if we are so terrible you STILL have not played a good team and still, you can’t say you are as good as YOU THINK YOU ARE. Moron.

Go on thinking you are all that. Your time will come.

    Tony,

I would hope that the Georgia vs Arizona State game wasn’t as close as it looked since ASU is ranked 49 in power rankings which is a little less than the strongest team played by Georgia which was South Carolina with a ranking of 44.

Georgia to date has not been tested by a strong team.

They may be as good as advertised but I’ll bet the UGA staff doesn’t want their guys believing the press clippings.

Alabama will give them all they can handle.**

I have read through most of the comments on this board. First and formost I have to say Bama was the better team last night. They played like a champion should and not only embrassed UGA but seriously exposed some of our weakness. In the time Coach Richt has been at Georgia I have to say this could be the worse loss in his brief history. Am I worried about this team…no. Did we have our a* handed to us….yes. Is is the end of the world…no. Bama congrats on the win. you earned it. December 2nd in the UGA (not because we own it…Blank just painted red and black)dome. Richt will not forget 09/27/08.

Now to address the tech poster’s. Replace Gardner Webb with ASU. Hell even Central Michigan. Play teams like Bama,Fl,Auburn,LSU and Tenn. Play in a meaningful bowl game. Beat your in-state rival 7 years in a row. Become the ACC champ. And finally for the love of God and everything holy sell out the stadium you play in so the AJC will stop having ticket ad pop ups…then and and then should you come on and talk crap about UGA. Get back to the basement losers.

Lastly and probably most disappointing in all this is seeing the “UGA” posters on this blog. I am dissapointed in the results of the game. But to call for Richt to be fired or any member of his staff is the dumbest thing posted.

RU CRAZY- change your name to I am stupid. Good for you living 18 miles outside of Athens. Dude, it makes you a douchebag that lives 18 miles outside of Athens.

To the guy that paid $600.00 for a ticket. I am glad you got screwed. you paid $600.00 dollars for a ticket to a college game.

Guys its one loss in a 12 game schedule. The road ahead is bumpy and scary. But it 1 loss. This team is still a good team. And I am still proud to say that I AM GEORGIA.

What you argue makes no sense. I proved your point? I’ve never said our lines were good. In fact, it was plain to many of us that we’d win or lose in the trenches and we knew our line was hurt by injuries. Shoot, they’ve played together for one game. So what am I proving? That maybe bama’s win wasn’t anything for such a great team as bama to be crowing about…coming against such a terrible team? Or that I am obective about my team? Well gee, thanks for noticing.

Dogs showed after halftime that they’re a lot better than they were in the 1st half. Bama only had about 20 more yards total offense than Georgia. And that’s including our impotent first half. Not to mention they were outscored 30-10.

Hopefully we’ll get a shot at them in the SEC Championship. We need some redemption. Gotta get through Vandy first, though…

Jake you idiot. You must be from Alabama’s vaunted educational system. I was not whining moron. I was simply giving credit where credit was due. Are you really that stupid?

I have said repeatedly that there are no excuses for losing…we were out played and out coached. I tip my hat to the victors. How hard is that for you to understand? What…did our players out play bama? Did our coaches out coach bama’s? Did I say the refs cheated us No, no, no to all. LOL. You can’t even recognize when someone gives your team credit.

Some of my remarks are intended to discuss our team’s problems with UGA fans. This is a UGA blog. THere are majority UGA fans here and we want to talk about our team. I guess that’s too hard for you to understand too.

As for bama being, “all world” that was an exaggeration based on the tone and tenor of bama fans comments here. I never said “you” in relation to the moron Jake, but in general. I could have said, “If one thinks bama is all world” instead. But this is a blog and I presume too much to think a bama fan will get the use of language. However, If you think the only team you—-oh wait—-if ONE thinks the only team on bama’s schedule they have to worry about is LSU, then boy, you are in for a let down.

I agree. We showed a lot of heart playing like we did in the second half. Of course, bama fans say the tide let up on us in the second half.

That second half is something to build on. Perhaps it will serve as a reminder of how intensely you have to play every down in SEC play. Maybe the coaches will learn to adjust more quickly to what other teams are doing.

Georgia got manhandled in the first half. They looked wholly overmatched and unprepared. I was surprised by the play of John Parker Wilson. I did not think he had that in him! On the other side, the second half of the game did show some character that you’d like to see in a championship team. Georgia came out scratching and clawing trying to get back. You have to admire that. And to the idiot columnist above….My ivy league education allows me to discern this….if Georgia wins out, which they are both capable of doing, there will be a rematch (possibly) with Alabama in the Championship game. Are you telling me a redemption win against Bama in Atlanta would not over come this? The answer is, “heck yes it would!” A one loss SEC team that redeemed their only loss with a later win against the same team would surely punch a ticket to Miami. No one ever really expected Georgia to go through the year without a loss. Winners use a loss to motivate them….We’ll see how this team responds.

In the end, for all the crap people talk on these blogs, this is still a game and these kids are still college students. They want to win, I promise, more than any fan wants to win. Guess what? If we run the table the remainder of the season and win the SEC east and meet up with Bama in the championship, we will have another chance to win. Next meeting, I don’t think we will have fantom penalties, shanked punts, dropped passes and everything that could possibly go wrong in one half of football go wrong. We GAVE the game to bama in the first half and I am so proud of the team that despite loosing Ellerbe and others to injury they fought back tough in the second half. If that fourth down conversion had not been called back for a holding (and did that penalty really happen when they rushed 3?) then we might all be talking about a different outcome to this game. I beg to differ that the points at the end were “window dressing”. It was a team fighting to the end to win and with that spirit when they clean up the penalties (and the problem refs who have it in for the dogs) we will win all of our remaining games. WE were our enemy Saturday not Alabama.

    By heeldawg

    September 28, 2008 5:04 PM | Link to this

    Observations:

  • Alabama won the game in the trenches.
  • Georgia made too many mistakes to beat a well-coached team playing nearly flawlessly. Penalties, turnovers—way too much to overcome.
  • Doubters aside, I think this cements Alabama as the most complete team in the SEC. They’ll beat LSU, unless they have some sort of meltdown like Georgia had Saturday. And they’d beat Florida if they played the Gators right now. Give the Tide some credit. They deserve their ranking.
  • Georgia has issues with senseless penalties and the pass rush. Those need to be corrected. There’s no reason they cannot be—they’re mental mistakes, not the result of a lack of physical ability.
  • Tech fans have no reason to crow about this. They’ve lost to Georgia every year for nearly a decade. Alabama and Georgia Tech have nothing to do with each other. Sorry, Jackets—you can’t hire a surrogate to play your games for you. You’ll have to show up and do it yourself. Talk when you have something to talk about.
  • The injuries that are piling up have really hurt Georgia this season. But the mental mistakes have hurt more.
  • I can almost guarantee a Georgia win against Tennessee in two weeks. Georgia will probably also beat Vanderbilt (although not without a struggle), Kentucky, Tech and Auburn, none of whom have been overwhelming thus far this season. Whether the Dawgs are 9-3, with losses to Florida and LSU, 10-2, with losses to either Florida or LSU, or 11-1, with wins over the rest of its opponents is up to Georgia and its coaching staff. They have the ability to win all the rest of their games, but the off week needs to be used to start correcting the deficiencies that were revealed this week.

  • Enough national title talk. Let’s just try to cut down on the mistakes and win the SEC East.

  • Again, Tech fans, shut up. No room to talk. And it’s hard to pit the dishwater ACC against the SEC when SEC teams are beating up against each other and ACC division leaders are losing to Navy.

  • Comparative scores mean nothing. Last season, Bama beat UT by 28, UT beat Georgia by 21, and Georgia beat Bama. It’s all about getting better week by week and showing up motivated and well-prepared. Alabama did that this week. Georgia did not. But the beat goes on. Lots of football yet to be played.

Reasons why UGA lost: 1. Offensive line injuries - This offensive line will continue to get blown up by strong D lines - UF and GT will have a field day.

  • D-line - the D-line was pitiful. When Bama needed to, they were able to completely push UGA off the line of scrimmage.

  • Undisciplined players resulting in ridiculous penalties. What a difference in the way the Bama players pulled back, but the UGA players would continue on to get the late hit just to satisfy their own ego and the hell with the team. Nothing new for this bunch (check the police blotter from the last 6 months).

  • Arrogance - I like Mark Richt, but his arrogance is beginning to hurt the team. Wearing black once is a cute gimmick, wearing it twice is treated as arrogance and BAMA manned up to it. Quite childish and amateurish really.

  • THWG - Go Jackets!

    GeoffDawg,

LOL…I was exiled to Alabama and I promise, being near last or last nationally in test scores has an impact on the intelligence of the average bama fan. I have a Master’s degree and I’m like Stephen Hawking over here.

    Nachos,

You must have salsa in your eyes or, as is more likely…you just don’t have the mental capacity to read and comprehend what is written on the blog. You either grew up in Alabama or you just attended one of their Universities. I’ve tipped my cap to bama enough today to have morons completely miss that and the points DAWGS fans are making as we discuss our team

You just keep talking trash morons. Your time will come. Sometimes you’re on top of the wheel of sport…soaking up the sun…then the wheel turns and you find yourself face first in the mud. It is inevitable. When you are eating mud…come back and talk trash. You don’t have the courage or the class to just tip your cap to the victor.

A prime example that Georgia isn’t the dominant team it thinks it is. Maybe this loss will shut up Georgia’s arrogant fan base for a while. You have to do more than just show up, even when it’s a home game. How appropriate that they dressed for their own funeral. ROLL TIDE!

Ok, I am back and can break it down for all those Doggie fans and remind you what went wrong:

  • I said at the first of the season that CMR would not be able to get you to the title game and last night proved it. Saban out-coached, out-flanked CMR and is on a much higher level of coaching than CMR.

  • CMR has surround himself with an inept staff based on loyalty. That’s fine, buy you need a solid staff, which UGA does not have.

  • Your OC Mike Bobo got drilled by a professional defensive scheme that was larger, faster more disciplined.

  • UGA came into the game leading the SEC in penalties and most likely left the game with this dubious honor. I am not sure why CMR runs the most undisciplined teams in D-1A, but last night was a self-fulfilling prophecy of what happens when a team plays cheap.

  • D Martinez is not your man and Major Applewhite just exposed his weaknesses. Your secondary is second rate and your defensive line got hammered in the trenches.

  • CMR is not your man to take you to the next level, so you need to shop his salary and look for a Jim Donnan or Ray Goff. If you are going to embarass this state, do it economically.

  • I said before the season started UGA would go 8-4 at best, and now I am only 3 away from fulfilling my prophecy. UGA had their manhood taken away last night and needs to hide for the next 2 weeks.

I suspect it will many more years before College Gameday returns, after UGA proved they cannot play in the national spotlight.

    Go Dogs!

Dear BCS Slave, How stupid are you? I was not talking about the players or their desire to win. I was talking about people like you! You put winning ahead of everything. I am sure you are proud of the 85 percent that did not get locked up. CMR came from FSU (Free shoe U) and he brought all the values that they had down there. You do not worry what goes on behind the curtain only Wins and loses. CMR went on a mission trip this summer but he SHOULD HAVE STAYED HOME and witnessed to the players on this team but that would not have been a good PHOTO OP would it. Come down off your cloud. The real world is calling CMR does not care how his team acts but he calls himself a CHRISITAN MAN. Now wasn’t that interesting?

The best thing is move over into the slow lane and allow the better teams to pass like the Big 12 teams who now dominate the top 10.

By the way, I see Florida fell to one of your weaker SEC schools, so I suppose that SEC comment about domination only goes through about September?

    Hurting,

Let me quote what you wrote:

15 percent of our team got locked up before the season began. We are the most penalized team in the country. I am ASHAMED of this football team!!!!!!!! How many of the UGA womens basketball team got locked up this year. All we are doing is paying these big kids to make us look bad and then they loose on national TV and get penalized for hitting the Quarterback in the face when we did not need to! Vince Dooley would not have put up with this crap and he WON a NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP. CMR HAS GOT TO GO!!!! Georgia’s football program has sold itself out to winning and is corrupt and out of control!!!!!!!! CMR has got to go!!!

Hurting…moron…did you not say we are paying these kids to make us look bad on national TV? The above is a direct quote. Did you not say Georgia’s football program has sold out to winning and is corrupt? What you have done, without realizing it, apparently, is attack our kids. If the program is corrupt, these kids are too. If the kids are being paid, they too are corrupt.

As for firing Richt…please. If anything, he is more into being Mr. Nice Guy than he is into winning at all costs.

And as for your attack of Richt’s faith…that is just offensive. He didn’t go on a mission trip for a photo op. I now know you are not a UGA fan. You don’t appear to know anything about Christiaity either. Jesus never said, “Thou shalt not be exuberant” or “Thou shalt not celebrate at touch down excessively.” Christ knew better than anyone the weaknesses of humanity. He came to forgive sins not to make humans into perfect beings. And finally, Christ once said, “he who is without sin, cast the first stone.” That is a message you would do well to heed.

These are blogs. We are here to talk football, not criticize people for their faith. And we shouldn’t criticize these kids for having a bad game. If you didn’t do that…then stop attacking me and explain yourself. Otherwise, I will dismiss you like I do so many others as a lost cause…an imposter UGA fan who really wants to hurt the team.

We will never win them all, as much as I would like it too. Dont beat up on the coaches and players I support who have worked so hard to return GLORY TO OLE’ GEORGIA

-the penalties bit us time and time again. I don’t believe all the calls were good but we’ve been getting them all year.

-I’m confused about this team; on the one hand there is an apparent lack of discipline (the penalties) on the other hand a team that played as hard as they played in the second half showed a lot of character-I hope the second half team shows up the rest of the year. There is a lot of football still to be played

The Black-Out was just another one of last-year’s antics to hide the fact that UGA is a mediocre team with a few very good skill players. We didn’t see anything different from what we’ve seen all season, especially in the play of both lines. Until the line play improves, which won’t happen without a couple more years of maturity, UGA will struggle against the better teams in the SEC. Let’s just enjoy our stars until they head to the NFL and long for the day when experienced lineman make the rest of the team look good.

    TruDawg,

You too must be an impostor UGA fan. You call the black out an “antic”? You can’t argue with winning and losing. What was UGA’s record last year? What is it this year? What is it for all of the Richt years? UGA plays in the toughest conference in college football. The majority of our games are played against SEC opponents. So wearing black shirts a couple of times is was supposed to hide the team’s mediocrity? LOL.

As for your comments about the line taking a couple of years to mature, that is bogus. Last year’s line had the same challenge as this year’s. If we avoid more injuries, this line will gel this season. Given they’d been together for one game, I think they did pretty good.

Most “Tru” Dawg fans who know a little about football knew that this would be a tough season. A lot of things had to go right for the Dawgs to run the table. The odds were slim for that we understood. We accept there could even be three losses too. What we can’t accept is that the team is unprepared to play. That’s what it looked like against bama.

    Hey, Mike Bob 17 Int:

We’re still here. I posted earlier, but you chose not to respond to it and instead posted one of your typical rambling diatribes that had nothing to do with fact and everything to do with your somewhat biased opinion.

8-4? Not on your life. Not that your life is worth all that much, but I’ll wager that’s just about all you’d have to bet with.

9-3 is about the worst case scenario. 10-2 is most likely, and 11-1 is not outside the realm of possibility. I’ll remind you of this later.

And the Big 12? Okay, I’ll give you Missouri and Oklahoma. Texas? Texas Tech? Maybe on a good day. We’ll keep Alabama, LSU, Georgia, Florida and Auburn, and even Vandy and Ole Miss. You match the leagues top-to-bottom and there’s no contest. You’ve got to show up in our league every week (unless you’re playing Petrino’s abysmal Arkansas team, which is about as good as Georgia Southern).

And Tech fans, get over it. You guys didn’t even play this week.

I actually came out of this game feeling encouraged. The Dawgs were down 31-0 at halftime, and if there was ever a time for them to lose by some real ugly score like 59-7, last night was it. Instead they fought back and actually had the Tide’s attention early in the 4th quarter. You can say the 11-point loss “wasn’t nearly that close,” but outscoring Bama 30-10 in the second half when they could have quit is something to build on, especially if the teams meet again in the SECC game. I look for Georgia to rebound with a good run into the conf. title game. I haven’t seen anything from the rest of the SEC to suggest that they can’t.

With superior talent he will kill you, ie. FSU and against Hawaii and Arkansas. Match the talent he has and it will be a cakewalk. Bottom line is this: If you get behind by 31 and don’t make changes you ain’t worth a flip. I love the bulldogs but I have to face reality. We need to hold on to 1980 cause it will NEVER happen again. Glad I was 11 years old and alive to witness it.

I have a very very very simple comment to all the idiots that want to talk about this team not being great. The Georgia Bulldogs do not have ONE offensive lineman that come into this season with more than ONE year of experience. Why are ppl talking about greatness with the team? This is a team that will only get better. If we had an offensive line full of 5th year seniors, true seniors and juniors, then I would really be worried. We have guys that were in high school this time last year going up against one of the biggest nose tackles in the country!!! This young guys won’t do anything but improve, game by game. I am not worried about greatness at this point. Anyone who is just doesn’t understand college football and how vital experience is.

Hi. Only thing lacking is dirt being tossed into grave. Dawgs are done! In regard to BCS anyway. Not so much loss itself but manner of defeat. A team worth a damn does not go down 31-0 to a vastly inferior rival in front of home crowd! I love Dawgs but am realist about final 30 minutes. Bama let up. Drastically! Whether consciously or not. I was not comforted by final cosmetic score! I wish Dawgs well. However, guys pulled a Falcon (ouch) in Athens! Oh, Dawgs rated HIGHER than I believe they deserve.

I felt going into this game with Alabama that they would be the best team we would face all year. You can’t take anything from them as they played one hell of a first half. Flashbacks to West Virginia were running through my head as the bama boys passed and ran at will all over us. We have to put this behind us and get our minds right to play the kind of ball we are capable of. All we need is two goals to focus on. Short term, “our next game is the most important, take care of business!” and long term, “meet and beat Alabama in the SEC title game in Atlanta!” We have our loss out of the way don’t worry about anyone else, just take care of business at hand.

Dawgs outplayed Bama in the second half. That is some funny stuff right there. Is that all the dawgs have to hang their hats on? People, it was 41-17 with 6 minutes left in the freaking game for gods sakes. Bama was playing a bend but don’t break defense the entire second half instead of the man up and come after Stafford and bust him in his mouth defense of the first half. Stafford got happy feet early in the game and kept busting the pocket. He didn’t want any of what Bama was bringing. But hey, he has a strong arm and will be the #1 pick in the NFL draft. One more thing, Matt: how many national championships has Saint Mark Pricht’s offense produced at UGA?

We gave them two scores off penalties, had the sorry punt to set them up for another and then had two very probable scoring drives stopped due to holding calls. If UGA can hunker down and fix the penalties we can play with anyone in the country. But that’s a big IF…. Richt needs to run these thugs till they PUKE!!! Go DAWGS

Fleshman, The only retarded person here is you. How many teams playing in the SEC go undefeated? And how many did what the Dawgs did last year—nearly made it into the NC with two losses and finished 3rd even without playing in the SECC?

Don’t know what team you support, if any. You seem to be someone just wanting to argue with folks. Chances are you were some poor, frail little boy who got teased and beat up by a jerk football player. Maybe a football player dated the girl you loved from afar. I don’t know what your problem is, but it seems to have affected your ability to use reason.

Get some help. You have deep seated resentment and self-esteem issues. If I’m wrong about this…then you should be in an assisted living program for the mentally disadvantaged.

LSU and AUBURN will BEAT baby bama as they always do.— SEC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME = GEORGIA vs LSU in Atlanta—

    By monty

    September 29, 2008 9:21 AM | Link to this

Hey guys, it’s still September. At this time last year no one thought we had a great team , but look how we turned out. I still believe we can run the table. I’ve seen FLorida play this year and they aren’t that impressive. Auburn has a great defense but certainly no offense like Bama’s. THE Lsu game is the toughest remaining game. If we can get coached up we can win that one too, All is not lost .

THE hypocrisy of the pollsters is unbelievable or should I say, is believable after we got shafted out of the championship game last year. To drop out of the top 10 after playing a top 8 team and USC remains, LOL! Tell me it’s not rigged.I watched that USC-Oregon game and USC got beat in every aspect of that game to an unranked team. USC are the darlings of all the coaches and sporttwriters.THE most overated team in the top 10, How are we supposed to take the polls seriously?

Bama finally beat a ranked SEC team, ——BIG DEAL—-

    By BCS Slave

    September 29, 2008 9:37 AM | Link to this

    Monty,

Yes, I agree about the polls. Another big question is how ALA can rise so rapidly through the polls. USC is still in the top ten because of their history and the bias of voters for them. Bama’s history is ANCIENT. They have not consistently won for many years. UGA, LSU, Florida have. How many SEC champtionship appearances for bama in the past ten years? How many for FL, UGA, and LSU? Bama’s rise to number two highlights the problem in the polls.

Bama is a good team, but the memory of the Bear and Saban’s reputation is what got them there…not the quality of their wins. The only team they’ve played that was quality is UGA. Either UGA is not as good as poll voters said or they are great and just had a bad game. Either way, why should a win in that game vault them over LSU? Bias.

College Presidents—-do something about this farce of a system. It is detrimental to college football.

    Give us a playoff.

I have read all of these posts after these stories in the AJC for months now and have never responded, but I have finally had enough of all of the visceral talk and hate the goes on here. I am a long time UGA FANatic, but we need to deal with facts only. First, we were beaten by a very good Bama Team, get over it, we can only blame ourselves and give them credit. We had too many penalties, showed a lack of discipline, and were not prepared to play. All of this IMO, is a Coaching problem that must be addressed and CMR will do so. Does this mean we are not a good football team? Of course not! Second, there is a lot of football left this season, so let’s see what happens. 4-1 and 11th in the nation is not bad and I would argue that many teams would like to be in our position.

I wont make any excuses for the Georgia lost. The DAWGS simply got beat by a Great Alabama Football Team Saturday night.

Although I still believe that the DAWGS are a great team, I still in my heart believe that the Dawgs are the better team. I will NOT trade us for them. Alabama just was the better Team this past Saturday Night.

Now with all the media hype, the fans hype, and probably the Team hype, and being over confident, they could get down to playing some serious football. From this point on, the Dawgs need to get a lot serious about the games they are heading to next.

What cost the Dawgs the game was the 1st Quarter penalties, and the first Five possessions of Alabama which resulted from the Dawgs penalties that Bama scored off of.

I have NEVER in my life seen the Dawgs use such poor judgement in racking up so much penalties. Because of the Bama made the Dawgs pay for it and pay for it Dearly. I have never seen Georgia down so may points in the first quarter, and leading 30 - 0 in the first half.

As I watched the fans sitting in Stanford Stadium stunned, I could’nt help but think what was going through the players head, and Coach Richt’s head.

Had the Dawgs played the first half like the second half of playing, they would have beaten Bama surely. For the Dawgs to Score 30 points in the second half and holding bama to just 10 points in the second half tells me that the Dawgs are a better team than Bama.

Bama just was the better team that night. With congrads going out to the Nick Saban and the TIDE, I will say this……….. “WE WILL MEET AGAIN IN THE SEC Championship.

I am sure that the Dawgs have learned a valuable lesson behind this, and will HUNKER DOWN and really play some football with NO Penalties. This is now a TEST of the DAWGS Character.

I remember a text a few years ago by Legendary Aubrun Coach Pat Dye…. “The DAWGS ARE’NT MAN ENOUGH” !!!! Now Dawgs, lets prove the sports critics wrong. Lets Prove The Sports Media Wrong. Lets Prove The ESPN Sports Analyst Wrong. Show the Fans your are MEN, and not BOYS……

I have a great deal of respect, and admiration for Coach Mark Richt. He has taken this Georgia Football Program when it became a unacceptable football program, and made it a Great Football Greatness.

I have Full confidence in Coach Mark Richt, and his coaching staff. From this point on, The Georgia Bulldogs Football Team will be a Team to be Recognized.

I am confident that the Dawgs from this point on will lose no more games, and will win the SEC East. My prediction is that Bama will win the SEC West over LSU, and we will meet them again.

From that point, we will get a second chance and will beat the TIDE. We will win the SEC Conference Championship. Black Out or NO Black Out.

The ONLY Funeral that will occur this time that Alabama coaches were saying, will be their own when The Georgia Bulldogs finish with them.

GO Dawgs!!!! SIC EM. BEAT EM!!!!! THIS TIME, LEAVE NO DOUBT!!!!!!!

    To the Dawg nation,

I have read several comments congratulating BAMA on their win and way too many comments about how they are going to lose down the road and they are over rated blah blah blah. We underestimated their team, their coaches and the few puny fans they had in the stadium. They still whipped our butts and good.Bama wasn’t even suppossed to have much of a team this year. Ya never know. We spent way too much time picking out our wardrobes and not enough time watching there game films and we would have seen as we did on Sat night that there offensive line may be the best in the country. When you give JPW as much time to make a decision no wonder they took it to us. He basically had all dy.

We played hard in the second half and are to be commended because if we hadn’t we might have been beat 62-0.

It will get back on track with hard work and coaches getting this weekend out of the players heads

Wow! Your article is about as over the top as Mark May commenting that USC was far and above better than any other college team this year…and that they could beat some NFL teams. Bama played a great game, John Parker Wilson had a great game, and things went well for them against a team that looked a little flat and had trouble getting things started. Bama is not as good as they looked and UGA is not as bad as we looked. Time will tell. It’s too early in the season for the media to anoint the king, the story keeps changing each week.

REALITY A great coach, a stable full of quality athletes, and a bowl victory over a speck in the Pacific Ocean don’t justify a pre-season No. 1 national rating. Every team should expect a bad day out, but UGA will remain in the top-20 only because it started out undeservedly too high.

Both East and West coast USCs should be a hard lesson for Dawg dreams. Next we’ll see how much intelligence they have to recover and play to their abilities.

This was no different than the Tennessee blow out loss last season, no different at all. All the same questions were being asked all the same doom and gloom or worst comment of all “Dogs are gonna be fine” statements made. Now that reality met theory, just like last year, let’s see where Georgia goes.

Last year a comment made was, “we have a lot of good players, but no play makers”. Along came Curran, Moreno and Howard. So, who steps up this year? If no one does, then we lose three or more games this year.

    September 29, 2008 11:41 AM | Link to this

Ummm … who exactly has Georgia beaten this year?

South Carolina tossed an INT which easily could have tied the game at the very end. Arizona State struggled mightily but couldn’t beat UNLV so beating them is good, but not any statement. Alabama is a very well prepared and well disciplined team, everything Georgia is not. You can’t win on talent alone. It takes playing and thinking as a team and it appears the Georgia is full of a bunch of individuals and a coaching staff that can’t get them to pull their heads out of their own a*******es long enough to play as a team, particularly in the really big games.

THUGA fans will continue to try to convince themselves that they’ll have another chance at Bama in the SECC game but it will not happen. With LSU, Florida and Auburn on the schedule I predict at least 2 more losses now that every weakness (and there are many) has been exposed.

Like last year BAMA can still go in the crapper…will they? I doubt it but we will see. The good news is this year UGA got its wake up call against a West team so they can still make it to Atlanta. UGA is clearly not a top 5 team now and they have a lot of work to do just like they did last year after the UT game. Congrats to Bama you deserve it and the Dawgs had better get to work if they want another shot at BAMA. I expect to see a REAL MOTIVATED TEAM next weekend against the Vols!

You had the most MOTIVATED you will see all year and they got their butts handed to them. I truly figured it woould be a 9-10, 10-14, or 14-17 win for either team. This was an ugly loss that seems to be a Richt trademark. He seems to need to get a wake up call toget to coaching. At his salary he needs to decide if he is a coach or a preacher. Either is fine but he needs to quite the second job is he wants the millions. I’ve been to horrible bowl efforts, a awful showing at Tenn and now this. All are labeled lack of being prepared. We just got taken to the cleaners by a much better coach. I failed to see that we had looked at what Alabama was going to do. Several analysis writers said Bama would come at us smash mouth like they did to CLemson. They did and we steped back just like Clemson. The remaining season is going to be very difficult. There is way to much talent to be a such a mess. Last year was amazing that we came back from the Tenn loss. That won’t happen very often. They’ve got two weeks to figure out if they want to play football. I hope they get it together. I rate the coaching for this game a zero.

Well to all the Tech, Bama, AU, ect. fans. I hope you have a great time reading and posting on these blogs. Bama has a good team this year. They have a good O & D line. They came out ready to play. UGA on the other hand did not come to play until the 2cd half. When we played GA football we scored 30 points fast! Did we lose the game Yes. Are we going to lay down and die No. We showed everyone that no matter what the score we fight until the end.

I am very pround to be a GA Dawg. I think this will influence the team to compete at a higher level for the remaining games. I dont know why we come out so flat some games. It happened last year vs. Tenn.

To the writer of this blog:

Its not how a team wins, but what they do to change once they lose.

Bama: hope to see you again in the SEC champ.

OK, that game was hard to watch. It really looked like the boys were just waiting for something good to happen to give them some confidence. We made no adjustments to the Bama run scheme - they ran to the left side so many times, and we never adjusted. What was CWM thinking, or was he? We made Wilson look like an All American, and he rarely, if ever, had any pressure. When he did throw, our DBs and LBs looked lost in coverage.

On offense, we got hit in the mouth, and never hit back. We never seemed to try to stretch the field, and when we did line up with multiple WRs, we couldn’t really block that well. Jeez, this is a good team, but we looked like last year’s UT game - lost and flat.

I really hope we find some motivation. Getting thrashed on ESPN at home should provide that motivation. If not, it could be a long season.

    Go Dawgs………

    gagawdog,

I have no idea what you are talking about. You weren’t paying attention to what I was writing I guess. Go back and read whatever post you were commenting on again and get the context right.

I have said repeatedly, if you actually read my posts on this blog, that we were out played and out coached. I tip my hat to the victors. I also said bama is a good team.

You must have been reading my attack on the polls. As I stated…that is not about being a fan of UGA…it is about being a fan of college football. My agenda is to point out how the polls are bias and flawed.

Bama’s rise is based mostly on bias. That’s not sour grapes. It is looking at the dysfunction of the polls and commenting on how they make little sense, bumping LSU this week. When you look at the polls from a voter’s perspective, you can challenge the logic used to rank teams. From one point of view, bama is the number 2 team in the nation. From many others, they are rising on the Bear’s reputation. The fact that they beat UGA soundly does not justify their rapid rise and their jumping over LSU.

The current system hurts every team and cheapens college football. It is not about competition…it is a beauty contest. If you got the impression I was slamming bama after they beat UGA, then you are wrong.

    Sick of bama,

Great post! Bama did win, and I give them credit for beating an unprepared UGA team. But you are right, it was not the “domination” that pundits and bama fans want to say. If the fans want to believe that, more power to them.

It is likely that in a few weeks, they’ll be crying in their cool-aid. That is life in the SEC. It is the reality. If bama fans think they will dominate UGA should we play them again, I think they are in for a rude awakening. If they struggled with Tulane, how will they handle LSU?
