Dogs a safe investment Saturday

As the only remaining solvent financial institutions that have not been taken over by the feds, Weekend Predictions Global Enterprises Catfish and Such — now on three street corners — brings you this update from hoity-toity 1-AA banking centers:

Quoting from a financial newsletter in the UK: “Lloyds TSB confirmed its accepted bid for Halifax Bank of Scotland (HBOS), formerly Britain’s biggest mortgage bank, for £12 billion ($21 billion), or £2.32 pence per share, in an all stock deal following yesterday morning’s near collapse in the share price of HBOS, which had witnessed a sustained assault by hedge-fund speculators over 3 days that had wiped out more than 66 percent of the bank’s value from £2.85 to just 90p following Lehman’s bankruptcy and AIG nationalization.”

If you can translate any of that, you so aren’t coming over to my house for brews.

Here’s all you really need to know about the loan crisis: Bear Stearns, AIG, Wachovia, Lehman Brothers, Washington Mutual, Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac and almost every bank except for those slush-funding really important things like SEC coaches and linebackers are in the tank.

Why? Because some doofus decided, “Hey! Everybody go out!” and nobody blocked. Mouse Davis took over Wall Street.

See. I don’t need no Harvard HBO.

Which leads me to Georgia. (I hate transitions.) Can anybody block?

One more sack last week in Columbia and Matthew Stafford is rooming with grubs. But this shouldn’t be a problem at Arizona State. Dennis Erickson doesn’t seem to be the same coach without a bag of Pell Grants. And, well, nobody’s going to fund a Pac-10 team outside of L.A.

Blow this out your Freddie Mac: Dogs cover 7.

NFL Value Menu

(Add fries and a field sobriety test for a complete meal)

— Chiefs at Falcons: The Chiefs didn’t split the atom last week. But they did lose to the Raiders 23-8, so that’s close. The Falcons continue to work their way down the quarterback food chain: Jon Kitna, Brian Griese and now third-string Tyler Thigpen, who was sacked three times last week but still has more working organs than the other two guys. Birds cover 5 1/2.

— Bengals at Giants: It’s not surprising Cincinnati’s defense stinks. Half the lineup is wearing orange jumpsuits on a roadside cleanup crew. But have you seen Carson Palmer’s two-game stats? Three interceptions, no TDs, 37.1 rating. Giants cover 13 1/2.

— Panthers at Vikings: The season’s biggest surprise might be Carolina going 2-0 without Steve Smith, who is so humbled that he has made it to Friday without sucker-punching a teammate. In Minnesota, Tarvaris Jackson hasn’t been punched — it just looks that way. Take the gift 3 1/2 and Carolina in an upset.

— Cowboys at Packers: Tony Romo grew up a Packers fan in Wisconsin. Fortunately, he plays professionally in Dallas, because he would have had no shot with Jessica Simpson in Green Bay. Packers pull an upset (but take the 3).

Semi-Pros

— Ms. State at Tech: The last time these teams played, Mathew Brady shot the game film. Hey, here’s something Tech fans under 70 may not be accustomed to: three games and every one has been impressive. The next three: Mississippi State, Duke and Chauncey Gardner Webb. Our little Jackets — 5-1 going into Clemson week? Tech covers 8 1/2.

— Alabama at Arkansas: Nick Saban vs. Bobby Petrino. Do they get ESPN in the underworld? This might be the first time in Saban’s career that he’s the sentimental favorite. Petrino’s stirring SEC debut: last-minute scrambles over Western Illinois and Louisiana Monroe. But the checks cash. Bama covers 9 1/2.

— Florida at Tennessee: Must’ve made Phil Fulmer feel good to see the team that beat him in week one (UCLA) get drilled by BYU 59-0 in week two. Maybe he can coach ‘em this week. Seriously, though. Florida’s Brandon Spikes recalled the Vols “quit playing” in the second half of their 59-20 swamp dive last year. Bulletin-board material: Edge, Tennessee. Everything else: Edge, Duh. Gators cover 7 1/2.

— LSU at Auburn: It’s a good thing Auburn went to a new offense this season. Otherwise there’s no way they pound Mississippi State last week 3-2. Actual fact: The home team has won the past eight meetings. I hate facts. LSU covers 2 1/2 on the road.

— Wake Forest at FSU: When Bobby Bowden not-so-secretly vowed to coach longer than Joe Paterno, did he realize he would lose to Wake Forest two straight years? My kingdom for the finish line. But: Noles cover 4.

Details, details

— Last week: 8-3 straight up, 4-6-1 against the line.

— So far, so feh: 18-10 straight up, 12-15-1 against the line.

Take the MSU Dogs and the points. Our young team is in for a crash. Not sure where the euphoria is coming from. I’m getting a sneaking feeling that MSU will beat us straight up.

LSU will plaster Auburn. 3 points won’t get it done against the Bayou Bengals.

The Criminoles should complete their rebound and end their skid against the Deacs. Getting 4 points is a gift. I’d take this one straight up.

I agree that the Gators will smoke the Vols, but I’m thinking the Tide will be looking past Arkansas and may struggle to win, much less cover the spread. I’d take Arkansas and the points at home.

The Dawgs should win by 10 or more unless the “adjustments” in the Offense Line don’t work. In that case it will be a long, hot day in Tempe for The Dawgs.

Auburn has no Offense but has one HE!! of a Big D! LSU is balanced but not as great as last year. 2 and 1/2 point spread !? LSU wins this one by 10 because the Auburn D will be on the field all day long.

Miss State plays smash-mouth football so I really believe this will be a great test for GT. I love the SEC but being a UGA grad and having grown up in Atlanta I have a traditional soft spot for the bees too (it used to be an incredible rivalry). I wish both teams luck and I think it will be a close, gut - busting game.

UT will play great ball against UF. UT really has a chance to win this one. UF is not a good as many believe and UT can get up for a game better than most teams I’ve ever seen (last year against my Dawgs for example). I’ll stick my neck out and pick UT in an upset. My SEC upset of the week.

The Tide will not be denied against Arkansas. Roll Tide. Hawgs - a good opportunity to play your best against one of the best SEC Teams this season. I predicted Bama would be damn good this year and so far they have proven me right.

Wake Forest vs FSU - who really cares.

UGA will not struggle this week. ASU will be the team that melts away in the heat. UGA by 17

Tech blows the doors off MSU. No turnovers this week and the Techies by 20

Wake keeps the streak alive and beats FSU at the wire.

LSU, BAMA, and Florida all win big.

UPSET SPECIAL: TROY over Ohio State.

While I’m at it. Local Team’s Final results:

Falcons 8-8 UGA 8-2 going into Tech game(LSU and Alabama losses) GA TECH 8-2 going into UGA game(Va Tech and Fla State losses)

The UGA vs TECH game will be one for the ages! Paul Johnson’s “attitude” will keep Tech close. Who wins??? TECH knocks UGA out of a BSC Bowl game..

Jeff really ought to stick to just making his usually mediocre picks. The political diatribe is yawn! Just a sports writer yearning to write about the important stuff like the editorial board but still stuck writing sports. Oh well!

At least I have to say I actually agree with most of his picks this week. Except that I think the Sun Devils either cover or win outright. As for his upset pick of Troy beating Ohio State I think Schultzy actually put some cojones on the line. Troy makes it close but eventually finds a way to lose just like against FSU last year.

By Brewer for GT President

The ASU game almost worked out perfect for UGA until ASU had to go and blow it last week. If they could have held it together for one more week then UGA could have crushed a top 20 team (maybe top 10) and earned some serious ‘style points’. I think UGA blasts them, even with weakness on the O-line, and ASU falls off in the rankings.

For GT, the O-line will be the game. If the O-line keeps MSU’s defense out of the backfield, GT controls the game and wins by at least 14. If the o-line fails, it will be a toss up. Or in the words of Lewis Grizzard, “Two mules fighting over a turnip”.

This is the weekend we find out if the Seminole Nation is going to start sending gold watches to Papa Bowden…although as Rico said it may take a last-minute Swank kick to do it…

We also find out if Carowhina is for real. I bet VT beats the crap out of them (2 TD’s+ diff) and that new QB really shines. May be close at the half but the second half will be all Hokies. Carowhina will look like a typical mid-tier ACC team—no conditioning and no depth—and they get gassed in the second half. As a GT fan I hope the Hokies lose, but it won’t be this weekend.

LSU makes Allbarn look like a complete POS. Final score may be within 2 TDs but anyone watching will say it wasn’t that close. This is the weekend Allbarn gets kicked off of the SEC Top 10 island, replaced by Bama.

I think it’s funny when some of you use ridiculously outdated names like “criminoles.” Those “criminoles” have a Rhodes Scholar, a QB that graduated in two years and is working towards a MBA, and a safety that graduated in 2 years and is currently in medical school while still playing at FSU. I guess you see what you want, but a team in Athens has endured more arrests than any other team around. But, I’d hate to confuse a Tech fan with the facts.

Tech, Alabama, Florida, LSU and FSU win this week, but the upset in the making is UGA. UGA’s offensive line woes show against an ASU team that is hungry to prove itself after losing to UNLV. Watch and see….

Dawgs cover, easily. Prime time game, and no humidity, Dawgs by 21, if not more.

Miss State beats tech straight up. How many points can a defense score? We are all about to find out. I’ll take Miss State and whatever points you’ll give me.

Alabama wins in a route. He Bobby you can’t sneak out of Arkansas in the middle of the night in Alabama. Take Alabama to cover.

Yes, I’ll be rooting for Ten. And abadeeb abadeeb that’s all folks…Fat Fill. Ten plays tough, but Urban will kick a FG at the end to cover the spread. Jorts by 10.

Auburn no offense, Miss. State no offense, No! Defense wins championships!!! Defense can score points. LSU best offensive line in the country, best defensive line in the country. Quarterbacks…AWWWWFUUUULLLL!!!! Auburn two pick 6’s and win. Auburn wins outright. You just can’t win the big games without an experienced QB. Sorry LSU, you lose.

Wake at FSU

Easy, don’t listen to “The ESPN”/ FSU hype. Skinner is the real deal and so is that D. FSU gets a shot of real. Take Wake and the 4, then sit back with your Deacon fans and talk about how good the academics, basketball, and yeah, the new football team plays.

I like the column by disagree with your picks against the spread. I don’t know how much you follow sports betting but some novices may actually take your advice. No way all favorites cover the spreads. UGA will easily cover. Aside from that, take all underdogs. Tech can’t cover a 9.5 pt spread over an SEC team unless it’s UGA which they get up for that game much more than Georgia does (since UGA actually has games left to play and Tech usually doesn’t). Also, Arkansas sucks but they will cover and play Bama relatively close. Something is screwy about the Fla/Tenn game. I wouldn’t touch it. But something tells me that Tenneessee will run the ball well and lose very close at home. LSU at Auburn…who knows? Neither of these teams have showed us much yet but I think Auburn will find a way at home to get it done. This game has 9 to 6 written all over it. And finally, Wake at FSU…Wake will cover and possibly win outright. Put it on the MONEYLINE!

Good Luck!

DAWGS cover the 7 by the power of two. That ought to keep the Techies busy a few minutes. UF, UT, SC, Aub, Bama fans don’t even try, you don’t have enough fingers and toes and besides it’ll make your head hurt.

— Ms. State at Tech: Chauncey Gardner Webb Ha Ha I like that. I like to watch. Our little Jackets are going to be shocked to face a decent defense. Missy St. intercepts a pitch out and dribbles it in for a TD. Nerds lose straight up.

— Alabama at Arkansas: Nick Saban vs. Bobby Petrino. Do they get ESPN in the underworld? Good one. It’s hard to figure out who to despise more, Nick Satan or Bobby Puketrino. No it ain’t. Bama covers the spread and Petrino secretly flies to Podunk Idaho to discuss the local high school coaching position.

— Florida at Tennessee: It’s time for somebody to let all the hot air out of Urban Lyer and those incredibly obnoxious UF fans and The Great Pumpkin is just the guy for the job. Hard fought game. Vols lead 21-20 with two seconds left and the lizards on the UT 20. Urban Cryer calls two timeouts to ice his own kicker who promptly kicks it into his center’s butt. Vols win straight up at home.

— LSU at Auburn: Auburn has a pretty good defense but so does LSU. Auburns offense…Oh my GAWD!! Sorry tiggers, tough night in Tubbyland. LSU 21 Auburn 4.

— Wake Forest at FSU: Gee Whiz Bobby Bowden and I think you’re due for a stronger prescription Joe Pa have been around so long oil has been discovered in their shoes. I just think there is too much talent for FSU to be bad for this long. Noles win despite the old geezer.

Heat? What heat? Let ASU come play in South Georgia on a Saturday night and then let’s talk.

Anyone who thinks that the Criminoles have disappeared must not have been paying attention when half the team was suspended for academic cheating. As long as Bobby Bowden is around, the Criminoles will be alive and well. It is true that Bowden’s desciple, Richt, has overtaken his old boss in arrest figures—mostly for drunkenness and assault—while the Criminoles focus more on theft and robbery. But the season isn’t over yet.

Hello all followers of this weekly mutation (should I put that on a T-shirt?) … A few comebacks ….. Not a beleevier: I’m not necessarily sold on Alabama but Arkansas has been SOOO bad, I can’t go with the Piggies …. Wreckmaniac: Cowboys are really good. Just a hunch. I’m sure I’ll be eating cup-a-soup next week ….. Neyland, yep your boys covered the 30. But it’s probably not worth it for UT fans to get cocky over. Win this week, that’s a different story. …. Dennis: Troy beating OSU? Where did that come from? ….. Low Country: I know Vols have pulled upsets in this kind of situation. But I would be REALLY surprised this week. …. Good One: Bless you. …. Shan - You are clueless. Take it from somebody who actually lives out here, this heat is deceiving. Sure, walking around feels great, but hydration is the real issue. You don’t “feel” the heat as much because it is much drier (hence, your hair comment). The thing is, your body is relieved of fluids much faster. Dehydration can sneak up on you fast out here.

Don’t kid yourself about the heat factor, it will be one, but I trust the trainers for UGA will already know about hydration and have started that process a couple days ago. Just hope they do not wait until Saturday to tell them to drink more.

My kids both play soccer in this heat and know to hydrate, starting the day before. We have tournaments here with teams from all over and that is the one issue they usually are not prepared for.

If they have not been drinking at least 24 hours in advance, it will show up by the fourth quarter.

Athens isn’t even in south Georgia. You must be some sort of moron. Learn to read a map. It’s simple geography.

You can’t honestly believe that Miss. State will beat Tech. If the MSU offense can’t put up points and they rely solely on defense to get the job done, then I’m afraid 2 pts will not win the game, much like against Auburn. Again, you’re a moron. Thanks for wasting my time.

The winner in that case would be the company who manufactures the stimulant, NO DOZ.

If I were investing money in a football conference based on the results of head to head play and the two investment vehicles were the SEC and the PAC-10, I would go with the PAC-10. After a thorough portfolio evaluation, noting that the PAC-10 has a recent history of dominance over SEC teams, it would be a safe investment of belief that a PAC-10 team will win the national championship this year. (Recent notable victories include Cal over Tennesee, UCLA over Tennessee, USC over Arkansas for two consecutive years). By virtue of this most recent history I believe I would be making the right investment. It actually appears that the SEC stock is in popular decline. The reason is that while a substantial number of SEC coaches have finally grasped the concept of defense, they have woefully neglected the importance and benefit of offense. The USC Trojans, the most popular blue chip stock with a spectacular offense and defense, would be a sure bet over practically any of the best stock in the SEC. But, it can be correctly supposed that some investers are content with common performing stocks as long as they are earning some kind of return on their investment. And, indeed, media attention, is deemed to be part of the investment attraction.

Hey Willie, Seems you somehow were careless and overlooked the SEC performances in the last two national championship games. In case the details somehow escaped you, Florida and LSU won the latest national championship games. You would make a likely investor for BearStearns. They made a lot of the same poor investment choices based on poor investment analyses for their clients. I hope you aren’t managing your grandmothers retirement investments.

Mr. AbeDawg, Indeed, those details did not escape my attention. However, really good investors note the conditions and circumstances of accomplishments. Many stocks perform very well in weak market conditions, while others perfom well in any market conditions. It seems both Florida and LSU met the former criteria. And actually, despite winning a national championship, it should be noted that perhaps this blue chip performance was a bit over-rated as it should be noted that it suffered a two-loss season. Some football programs consider it a failed season when they lose two games. But let’s call it what it was, a somewhat successful performance in a very weak market. The Florida performance had little advantage either. Both were rather boring perfomances and struck very little excitement into the game of football. It was kind of like a beauty contestant with unstriking looks winning a beauty contest. Not very exciting, but I suppose it did accomplish the task of naming a winner.

The good news is that 2500 ugaly fans were rejected on their ticket requests. This means that the housing market will not suffer further from 2500 trailer forclosures caused by 2500 ugaly fans paying for their first flight instead of their mortgage. Maybe that would have been enough that Perdue may have bailed them out anyway by calling athens what it is: a disaster area.

It’s people like you who give idiots a bad name.

Go back and reread the post nerd. I never said Athens is in south Georgia.

Go away and treat your acne and let us discuss football. Don’t you have a Dungeons and Dragons tournament somewhere?
