Predictions: Spurrier’s nothing to be paranoid about
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
According to legend, my favorite source, the term paranoia was first used in the late 1800s by the noted psychiatrist, Emil Kraepelin, who took note of his patients with delusional beliefs but no seeming deterioration in intellectual abilities.
It’s believed Kraepelin also recognized his own paranoia, because no matter how hard he tried, he became convinced that German chicks don’t dig the long-winded — and he kept losing debates to his biggest rival, Ludwig Von Spurrierhauser.
Which brings me to Saturday.
Kraepelin is so dead. Paranoia, not so much.
South Carolina stinks. Steve Spurrier has lost five straight SEC games. That includes two losses to Vanderbilt, which wouldn’t be so bad if we were comparing, like, libraries.
No wonder they’re all manic-depressive in Columbia. It’s bad enough having to live there.
But Georgia fans? They still have this thing about Spurrier. It dates to Florida. OK. And last year.
But has any nuisance of a rivalry ever looked so one-sided?
Spurrier can’t decide on a quarterback. Or a gameplan. Or a play. He has had one winning season since he left Florida seven years ago. No wonder out-of-state recruits laugh at him.
Georgia’s coach-quarterback-running-back trio of Mark Richt-Matthew Stafford-Knowshon Moreno ranks up there with any the program has ever had.
The line is seven. Am I missing something?
Separating fact from delusion: Dogs cover.
Keggers
• GaTech at VaTech: The Hokies lost to East Carolina, struggled offensively against Furman, lost four of their past five bowls games and are getting drilled by fans on the “Hokie Hotline” radio show. Frank Beamer’s response to one caller: “We’ve got good coaches, the players are going to get better and I think you’re out of whack.” At least now we know where DeAngelo Hall gets his thick skin from. Jackets lose but keep it close. Take the 6 1/2.
• Ohio State at The Real USC: Excuse the regional intrusion. Jim Tressel now says “Beanie” Wells is doubtful. Could be lying. Doesn’t matter. This team barely beat Ohio. Nobody can fake it that good. Trojans cover the 10 1/2.
• UAB at Tennessee: The Blazers have allowed 94 points in two games to Tulsa and Florida Atlantic. Fortunately, they take a step down this week. After the Vowels’ effort UCLA two weeks ago, I’m kinda liking the 30.
• Auburn at Missy State: Sylvester Croom won this game a year ago at Auburn, which pretty much made the Bulldogs’ season until the win over Alabama, which of course made everybody’s season. Well. He’ll always have the memories. Tigers cover 10 1/2.
Pros, Fantasy and Matt Cassel
• Falcons at Bucs: Jim Mora is the only Falcon head coach to win his first two games. Everything was great until the ammounium nitrate smoothies started to cloud his judgment. Mike Smith has the advantage of not being a nut job and will start the same QB (Matt Ryan) for the second game, which gives him an advantage over Jon Gruden, who has started seven QBs and exactly won zero playoff games since the Super Bowl in 2002. This week: Jeff Garcia is out; Brian Griese is in. Who’d a thunk this? Upset II forthcoming: Take the Birds and seven.
• Eagles at Cowboys: True story: Tony Romo won a game in Cleveland last week, then on his way home from the airport he stopped to help an elderly couple change a flat tire. Sure, he’s in great September. Dallas covers seven.
• Mushhead at Bengals: The good news is, Vince Young’s mom seems pretty tough. Bengals are awful but even they can’t botch this one.
• Patriots Lite at Jets: Gisele Bundchen said this week she has no intention of marrying Tom Brady, and I’m sure the timing is a complete coincidence. On a related note, she thinks Matt Cassel has a cute butt. Check? Going against the mock: Gimme the Pats and 1 1/2.
• Colts at Vikings: Peyton: The lesser Manning. Still, Indy covers the deuce.
• Niners at Seahawks: Alex Smith is out for the season. SanFran’s quarterback depth chart hasn’t looked this good since Montana was drafted. Seattle covers seven.
Who’s Counting?
• Last week: Never happened.
• Details, details: 6-5 straight up, 4-7 against the line.
• Bottom dollars: 10-7 straight up, 8-9 against the line.

So glad that the Raiders wanted DHall. Good luck with that. Can’t believe that Mora is the coach in waiting at Seattle. Didn’t anybody see what happened in Atlanta?

Dawgs in a romp? Where is the killer schedule we have been hearing about since January? OK, I’ll be patient, but honestly, aren’t you one of the same writers who touted the first three games of the season as one of the most challenging of UGA’s recent schedules? I understand that noone is supposed to remember what was written last week, but come on, be real- either it is a bear of a schedule or it isn’t! Which is it? Or does it not matter as long as the Dawg fans don’t understand the pandering?

First of all, it sounds as if you are still venting over so many losses to Spurrier especially last years. Also South Carolina did’t open up against cream puffs there first two games like your bulldogs. Granted NC State is rebuilding and Vanderbilt is a good football team. SC made many mistakes that allowed the loss to Vanderbuilt. SC beat themselves more than anything. UGA has better players overall than SC and UGA will probably win the game, at least you should pray on your knees they do because if UGA does loses Saturday it will be a LOT more painful than last years loss when you still have LSU, Auburn (away) and Florida. You may not be so lucky this year! But on the other hand if you beat USC the bulldogs should hammer BAMA, VOLS and lowly VANDY at home!! Sure everyone was so impressed with your big win over powerfull Hawaii in your bowl game but lets wait and see how you do against the other SEC rivals and see if you are truly worthy of the #2 ranking. At this point SC is wounded and backed in a corner with nothing to loose and everything to gain on Saturday.

I love all this “lets see what you can do against the SEC” crap, like Georgia is some up and comer that has come out of nowhere on the SEC scene. You’d have never thought that we FINISHED #2 last year, returned 17 starters, and have a coach that is the 4th winningest active coach in the nation. I have no idea what is going to happen this year, but please don’t be an idiot. Thanks.

By Doug

Dawggy Dawg, The entire run-up to this season by all the home town writers has been that the Dawgs have the most challenging schedule in the entire country because of the overwhelming dominance, either real or imagined, of the SEC. That, along with the hot finish last year by the Dawgs resulted in a preseason/early season number 1/2 ranking. It is only reasonable now to say to both the SEC and the Dawgs to either put up or shut up. So Dawgs, let’s see what you can do against the SEC! If you produce, ok, you deserve a national title. If not, the hype was just that, hot air.

Doug, I would say USC/ASU/BAMA/TENN/FLA/AUB/LSU/KY/VANDY/and Tech rank as a pretty hard schedule. The SEC has 5 teams in the top 15 and we play ALL 4—that is a tough schedule. Time will tell but this team is out to prove something this year. We roll the cocks Sat—41-17. DAWGS!!

desertdawg, It sounds as if you agree- it is time to ignore all the talk and words that our favorite writers can spin to create an image and focus on results on the field. The Dawgs have benefited tremendously by an overwhelming PR effort by the home town writers. All the Dawgs have to do now is produce- they have their destiny in their own hands! If they don’t live up to the written words by the home team writers, man up and admit the hype. If they do, I will join uou in toasting a great accomplishment.

LOL.. How many interceptions did they throw against NC State? And they still couldn’t score the entire game? CMU would beat them. GSU MIGHT beat them.
And Vanderbilt, while not the pushover they traditionally have been in the past, does not qualify as a “good” team, sorry.

Doug: I didn’t write anything previously about the schedule. I certainly never would have couched Georgia Southern and Central Michigan as challenging. … Mark Gardner: I’m not venting. I didn’t go to Georgia or any school around here. I have no vested interest — other than to poke and try to make people laugh once a week. …. Seth63: For what it’s worth, I think it’d be great if Tech won and, yes, I think they have a realistic shot. I just couldn’t pull the trigger on consecutive conference road wins. …. Mike: It’s just you. Dude, this is all in fun. Inhale, exhale. You’ll feel a lot better. … JSBy Brewer

I was about to ask somebody for info, re: Virginia Tech. But I went to the VT website instead. It reveals what I suspected: Virginia Tech is not a real Tech, like Georgia Tech. VT is just a state university wannabe, bloated with crip courses to attract NFL prospects. It resembles Alabama Polytechnic Institute, and the rest of the SEC. I hate it when Georgia Tech has to play a football factory. I’m scared about the game in Blacksburg tomorrow.

I really appreciate the team spirit, but the “ONE HEARTBEAT” (perpetually capitalized for emphasis) is getting a little annoying—especially when it is posted 3-4 time in a row every time it appears…
That said, I think GT wins in a close one, and the falcons lose a close one because they aren’t quite ready yet. The rest of the season will only see them getting better though, and big things are coming in the future…

Barry- the Falcons are a professional football team - translate : mercenaries. There ain’t no ‘one heart beat’ - there are 44 paychecks. Shultzie- my these techsters really get bitter over picks, don’t they? You were even nice about it too. Their team is actually showing signs of life. But I would remind them,it has for years won games they were not supposed to win, then when their fans get their hopes up, they choke against Va. or Duke or NC State. Let’s see how the next 4 or 5 games play out before we hand them the Toastal Div. title.

You have one of the poorest and violent populations in the US. You better make money to live there in constant danger.
Oh, and by the way there is plenty to be paranoid about with Spurrier. He took a team far less talented and with their best player out and darn near beat you. He’ll be back next year and the next. It’s your little fantasy that he walks away but after today’s game it was obvious that reports of his death are greatly exaggerated.
