Time for predictions: UGA crushes GSU

Beijing — Sorry. Force of habit. Let’s try this again.

All-Knowing Central — According to my Chairman Mao watch, which cost only $7 and is still keeping time just as well as my $7 Rolex, which I was told by a nice man who seemed in a big hurry that it was a totally real before he also offered me a genuine Chinese gymnastics birth certificate — it’s that time again.

Ni hao. I am back. I’m just not, like, am.

You spend three weeks in a country with an upside clock and it does things to you. Woke up at 2 a.m. again the other day and made everybody breakfast. Completely threw off the dog’s begging schedule.

This is the 15th anniversary of Weekend Predictions. We began this venture in 1993, or not long after Johnny Majors was released from the hospital for bypass surgery and soon realized that one of his doctors must have forgotten his scalpel because something was protruding from between the coach’s shoulder blades and, well, Phil Fulmer said it wasn’t his. (An early-season kiss for the PumpkinNation.)

By now, you should be familiar with how it works. Every week, we give you the winners. It’s just your job to find them.

The weekly tip sheet is sometimes sprinkled with “losses.” But these “losses” merely are devices to throw off competing investment firms. You should be able to easily navigate through these “losses” with the decoder booklet that you received in the mail several weeks ago. If you lost the booklet, I’m sorry. My dog ate my last one with the last breakfast wrap.

Georgia opens Saturday against Georgia Southern. There is no official line on the game. That’s either because Georgia Southern is a I-AA team or possibly because oddsmakers have been scared off by so many Bulldogs fans acting like the deranged blackjack player who keeps saying, “Hit me. Hit me! HIT ME!” even after the dealer says, “Sir. You’ve got 97 showing.”

We have been led to believe that by the time this season is over, Georgia will be the first team to go 14-0 and win the national championship while having a quarterback and running back share the Heisman Trophy and a coach win the Nobel. And then, we conquer Spain.

I’m setting the line at 23. That’s the average margin of victory in Georgia’s three previous victories over Southern. For the record, this will be the last bit of research from me for at least seven weeks.

That’s it. Mao’s running slow, I’m running long. Dogs cover 23.

Early-season Six-Pack (I drank one)

• Clemson vs. Alabama: Just wondering what feels worse in Tuscaloosa: Nick Saban taking you to Shreveport in his first season, or going into the second knowing Tommy Bowden is so much closer to winning a conference title than you are? Tigers cover 41/2.

• Western Illinois at Arkansas: In honor of Bobby Petrino’s first game, the first through 5,000 fans will receive traded souls, although there’s a chance they may expire in the third quarter. Western Illinois has a really cool nickname: The Leathernecks. Unfortunately, I don’t see George Clooney anywhere, just Beelzebub. No official line. Let’s say Porkbellies cover 17.

• Tennessee at UCLA: Fulmer hasn’t coached a team to a BCS bowl since 1999, but here’s the good news: The Vols get to play in the Rose Bowl Monday. It’ll almost be like they’re a factor, except not. Rick Neuheisel and Norm Chow will make things interesting in L.A. Feeling frisky. Vols win but give me the Bruins and 7 1/2.

• Hawaii at Florida: Former Hawaii coach June Jones, ironically a master of the statistically inflated system quarterback, last year referred to Tim Tebow as a system quarterback. Jones is now at SMU — just in case his players want to know where to send the medical bills. Gators cover 35.

• La-Monroe at Ala-Auburn: Just about the time everybody had run out of Saban jokes, Louisiana-Monroe beat Alabama last year. You’d think Auburn would just let them walk in for a touchdown to open the game as a thank you. Won’t matter in the end, anyway. Tigers cover 26.

Etc.

Next week: Matt Ryan screams for help and NFL picks.

Lock of the week: Schlage

What’s an “upside clock”?

By What hype?

August 28, 2008 7:20 PM | Link to this

I don’t know who led you to believe that. A writer at your own paper says there is “no way” Georgia does better than 9-3. The media picked Florida to win the SEC, not Georgia. The ESPN talking heads have dismissed Georgia’s preseason #1 ranking as a cute little novelty to entertain everyone until OSU or USC get their due. To hear the media talk about the schedule one would think the opposing team will be allowed to wield sharp objects on the field against Georgia, if not firearms in some cases (Florida). Fans of every team on Georgia’s schedule think they are going to beat us this year. Go to the blogs on this very website to see what I mean. So I guess what I’m saying is I’m not seeing all this Georgia hype that everyone constantly refers to. I’ve never seen more Georgia doubters than this in my life.

Georgia will be lucky to come out of thisseason 9-3…Dont believe the ‘TYPE, haha. Southern will give you a preview of having a target on your backs, 40 point wins will be expected week after week, and thats tough..and Staffords admission of liking homeboys is all over the internet.

There goes Jeff again. After his paper has hyped the Dawgs more than anyone this preseason, he goes and calls us deranged.

“We have been led to believe that by the time this season is over, Georgia will be the first team to go 14-0 and win the national championship….”

The only entity that we have been led to believe this by is the ajc. We Georgia fans know that an NFL team would have a hard time getting through this schedule blemish free. We believe in our Dawgs and know that it is possible, but unlikely. Hopefully, we’ll only lose one or two and get to the SECCG. Win there, and then let the chips fall.

Please though…enough with the misdirected accusations of delusional fans. Don’t blame us for your attempts to sell more papers by spoon feeding us your hype.

Agree with ajc hype, whoever you are. Most UGA fans are excited by the #1 ranking but believe its about 7 months late. As for this year, schedule and inexperienced O-line will = 3 losses. Sorry, that’s just the way it is. But I remember the Goff and Donnan years only too well and 9-3 ain’t so bad!!!

If Schultz is using Chinese Olympic Judges, then UGA goes 14-0. And Uga is 90 in dog years, and the UGA cheerleaders learned their dance steps from Clysdesdales, and Saddam Hussein met with Al Queda operatives at Rick’s Cafe in Casablanca.

UGA can win all their games. And I deserve the pulitzer prize. It’s coaching. UGA aint got it. Uga could design more succesful game plans, (and more discrete signals to the Qback).

It’s always exciting to hear from the jealous nay-sayers and ne’er-do-wells. I also enjoy the sound bites lifted from “College Football Live” and other pundits quoting how Georgia won’t win the national championship. It’s a lot like the Democrats quoting the sound bites from an Obama speech—pretty catch phrases—but unless you listen to the entire text, you miss out on important details. For example, while they don’t think Georgia will win the NC because of the schedule, they all agree that Georgia has the best team. So, until someone knocks them off, they’ll remain No. 1. (At least until either USC or OSU mangles the other, in which case the swooning will begin anew in Bristol, NY and LA.) Will the Dawgs do it? Who knows? What I do know is that we of the Bulldog Nation have something GREAT to look forward to every single week! Strap it on, fellas. Let the fun begin!

(Don’t forget where you heard it first. Georgia vs. Oklahoma for the glass egg!)

most of us on this blog regardless of our school of choice are still wondering what in the world you are trying to say? we doubt anyone is taking anyone lightly but ga. southern doesn’t have the depth to suspend 8 athletes and have a chance against georgia…appalachian state has an excellent program as does gsu…astate university played well and deserved to beat michigan..they should be congratulated and i loved it..and in no way did app. state look anything less than a powerhouse..just don’t think any chance ga. will fall prey to gsu….georgia is loaded and other fans better know that we are that good at every position or the college coaches wouldn’t have voted us there. the same team that totally dismantled hawaii will suit it up this year with several freshman that are grown men..enjoy the season…every game will be a game of solid focus …guaranteeed…richt has greatly matured as a coach and his time is now……he shows great class and humility many times… both in defeat or victory…sure the fla. deal was a controversy but it worked and will be talked about for all time…i’m sure some of these sanctimonious fans and coaches of the other schools can’t qualify to cast the first stone….

What’s with all the nastiness from the UGA fans getting down on GSU? Has that No. 1 ranking just blown your heads wayyy out of proportion? Have some class towards GSU. Its a smaller school and hence a smaller classification of football and UGA should and will beat them. But for Pete’s sake get a grip. You’re not all that. You’re a team that hasn’t won a nat’l title in 28 years and only 2 secs since 82. It seems like you just don’t know how to handle a little bit of success and quite frankly u haven’t won anything yet. U just have a nice preseason ranking. And why do you beat down GSU? Its a program that has had far more success in their classification than UGA ever had or ever will in its classification. That is a fact. I don’t follow them closely but unless I’m mistaken I think they’ve either played for or have won numerous nat’l titles in their classification and several of them recently. Until you guys actually win something you should have a heck of a lot more humility. Your tradition pales in comparison to some of the heavyweight traditions in the SEC like Bama, Tennessee, or even LSU with 2 bsc titles in the last 5 years. Go win something before you start putting down other programs.

Dear GSU alumni, We ain’t Michigan. And if I were you sir, I wouldn’t be holding my breath for lady luck to strike twice.

UGA alumni you are correct you are not Michigan not even close. When you become Michigan…will never happen then let’s talk.

Georgia is not going to do any better than 8-4 this year guys. I hate to bust your bubble, but Georgia isn’t that good as a team. Their offensive line is horrible. NEVER will you win any type of championship w/a suspect offensive line! Mark this down…Georgia will end up this year w/an 8-4 record and end up about #22 in the final polls. I just don’t see them doing much better. As for Auburn and their new offense…I think everyone is going to get a taste of the “Spread Eagle” offense and they aren’t going to like it one bit. Look for Auburn to win the SEC West and Tennessee(quiet sleeper) to win the SEC East. Tennessee just needs to find the right starting quarterback and they will be a more complete team than either Georgia or Florida. Also, Florida is probably even more overrated than Georgia. Their defense absolutely stinks!

sorry guys just pulling your chains …i really could care less about football but can’t wait for the world series,,, forgot that quarterback position isn’t one you want to try to fill and win the sec east…and that bo jackson’s best sport was baseball… but i do like auburn for the simple reason that vince dooley went there..just playing the antagonist to see how some of our ga. fans would respond!

Auburn? Y’all better get a quarterback…And as for GSU, there is a reason we call y’all the “one semester school”…cause people go there for a semester to party, flunk out, and then come back to Atlanta w/ their tails between their legs, and an ugly GSU hat they wear to the bar to get black out drunk.

great to start # 1 but it matters not unless we get to play for the national championship at years end and that is often decided in a screwed up way ,,chances are we will lose at least 2 games ..hopefully not…but we’ll need some luck and hopefully be 1 or 2 after the sec championship….the recognition by america’s college football coaches is great though…go dawgs…………………..good luck gsu the of the season …saturday won’t be one of our losses

Reggie, dude, you are an absolute moron. Finish #22???? Man, I thought we had that talk about you not smokin crack before 8pm. So are you an Auburn fan?? You need to worry about finding a quarterback young man. And you said “Georgia is not that good as a team” …….WTF does that even mean? You need to go somewhere else because we really only allow a certain amount of idiots on here, and you haven’t even earned sub-par idiot status yet.

If I were a UGA fan, I would be ashamed at the lack of class your fans show towards any school, but particularly GSU in this case. The frat guy on here from UGA sounds p** off at life. Being a former college student athlete, I laughed at guys like him because they could only feel worthy by wearing greek letters on his chest. Don’t get me wrong, I have plenty of fraternity friends…….but athlete’s laugh at you guys because they get the girls you want. And speaking of Statesboro, if you think that place is full of trailer parks, well, that speaks measures for his intelligence on any subject. Statesboro is a great place to live for a lot of people, and is growing exponentially. As far as football goes, yes…….Georgia will probably beat GSU this year. But I can guarantee you the GSU football team will come up there and play their hearts out. As far as a joke of a program…….mr. frat boy is an idiot. Georgia Southern has one of the most storied programs in the state. Erk is rolling in his grave at this idiot. Although GSU has a slim chance, God has a funny way of humbling the arrogance so many UGA fans and alumni boast. It may not be with GSU, but UGA will lose at least 3 games this year. No way you will get out alive at LSU. Auburn will beat you, and Florida will knocked your heads off for the………yet again…….boasting your coach condoned in the end zone last year during that game. Your #1 status has already gone to your arrogant heads. I will root for any team that toes up against UGA.

wow i was fortunate to play on the men’s golf team at georgia and the athletes actually enjoy the attention and stay focused on what their goals are. the georgia players and coaches appreciate the fans and could care less what former athletes like you think. what did you play at georgia southern, were you on the underwater knitting team ..you loser…get off the blog if you think we are worried about your 9-3 prediction ..i’m sure the players will play one game at a time and focus on the moment at hand…the dawgs have experience and good coaching…that said the sec is a mine field in every sport…and furthermore i have quite a few friends that played for ga. southern and i hope their team has a good year…urbano’s(adam) southern’s tailback from calhoun is a good kid and his brother blake can really hit a golf ball…best wishes

ACane2Remember

Haha I find it funny ! ! ! That all these people still find time to talk about the Buckeyes. I personally think the BIG TEN is highly overrated. There style of football is still stuck in the 1940’s were you run the ball 40 - 50 times. Then throw a hail mary or a screen pass to try and throw opponents off. Which is laughible. Joe Pa is a good coach but the rest of his non contending league need to sorely come of age. An catch up to 20th century football. The SEC,PAC-10,BIG-12, ACC are to strong for these teams. The only team in the Big Ten who has any idea of a new offense is Michigan. Even though Michigan won there Bowl game last year. Does not mean there good. I hate the Big Ten. Teh Big Ten should be disbanded and just put in with the conference USA division. The Bucks coach and coaching staff always choke. When it comes to speed and talent Big Ten sorely lacks.

As for them Dawgs ! ! ! I won’t Sugar Coat it for you guys. You guys have a tough schedule. If you guys can keep your MLB’s from fighting flower pots in Downtown Athens you guys would be able to win the games your supposed too. That DE spot has been weak in preseason only due to plaguing injuries. Hamstring’s and turf toe’s…..Anywho don’t count them Dawgs out. Ladies and Gentlemen of the Jury I think the NCAA 08 - 09 SEASON is in for another topsy turvy year. Were top 10 schools get drilled. Believe it or not. The talent pool is not as deep as it once was back in the day. I think that The SEC is the strongest in the Nation.

Followed by the Big-12,Pac-10,ACC,BigEast,WAC,MAC,ConUSA, THEN THEN THE big 10….. Let me tell you a secret Dawgs.I honestly don’t think LSU is good as everyone says they are in the Media. No offense to those in Baton Rouge. You have 4 returning on offense 5 on defense and people are picking you to “possibly” run table in the SEC. Uhn Uh No No my friends in Athens. There saying that with all Big name defensive guys LSU lost last year there stll the best defense. I just dont believe it. An personally I think LSU will lose atleast 3 games. 1 coming courtesy of UGA and Lorans Best VII.

Wrong as usual Jeff. The Dawgs looked rusty against a team that started 8 of 11 true freshmen. Yes, it is Georgia Southern (who may actually end up changing divisions in the next few years pending the results of the current study), but Georgia couldn’t crush GSU today. The Dawgs were more prone to injury as well, while GSU seemed much better conditioned despite their smaller size. I think that a lot of credit goes to GSU for making it a game after Lee Chapel entered in the second half.

Nice call on Bama/Tigers.

Tech fan here and I can not remember the last time Clemson won a big game, unless it was against daddy to keep his job alive.
