The Tuesday Countdown
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
10.Amy Winehouse passed out and was hospitalized Monday. See, that’s what happens when you win a Grammy. Amy Winehouse used to pass out three times a week, but nobody considered it newsworthy before.
9.Three hours after the first game of a West Coast road trip, and after a win, the New York Mets announced the firing of manager Willie Randolph with a press release at 12:15 a.m. in Anaheim - 3:15 a.m. Eastern time. I have seen cowardly, low-class and spineless moves by teams before. But this sets a new standard.
8.This is how big a mess the Mets made of this: Had they fired Randolph before the trip, or last week, or last month, nobody would’ve had an issue. Instead, they’ve cast themselves as clowns and turned their fired manager into a sympathetic figure.
7.Three days until Don Waddell’s 10th draft. Never thought I would run out of fingers.
6.Just got off the elliptical machine at the Y. Flipped channels. Saw Billy Ray Cyrus on the Today Show rip “Vanity Fair” magazine for running photos of his 15-year-old daughter, wrapped in a bedsheet. Does Billy Ray Cyrus work for the Mets?
5.Excuse me. Who signed the deal with the magazine? Who let his daughter pose? Who approved the photos? Daddy had nothing do with this? If you want to judge for yourself, Cyrus’s interview will re-air at 3:15 a.m.
4.I’m not saying there wasn’t an argument to keep Mike Woodson. I’m just saying there seemed far more reasons to make a change. Regardless of whether this was entirely Rick Sund’s decision - and odds are against it - he just hitched his future to Woodson. Consequently, Sund’s honeymoon period didn’t make it to game one.
3.They teach you how to accentuate the positive in PR school, which explains why the press release announcing Woodson’s re-signing references the Hawks’ seven-game playoff series against the Celtics but not Woodson’s career coaching record (106-222).
2.The U.S. Open playoff round was great theater Monday - for the 17 people who didn’t have to go back to work. The USGA’s tiebreaker rule is lame. Imagine a World Series game being tied after nine innings and Bud Selig deciding to play nine more the next day.
1.Come to think of it, don’t say anything to Bud Selig.

This is an absolute disgrace. The most cowardice move any team could have done. Why make the 3 of them fly 3000 miles, with the team ACROSS the country, to fire them ?? In the middle of the night no less ?? I am livid at this organization and hope they fall so far down our division that binoculars won’t even be able to scope them out !!!! Can’t argue with much of this other than #2. I would say, Jeff, don’t be a hatter just because everyone got into the Open, and you want to be Debbie Downer. When you consider there are actually 72 holes and they played an 18 hole playoff, that would be more like baseball playing an extra 2.25 innings, which is basically what happens when a game goes to extra innings anyway. Nice try Jeff, I guess you only had 8 points this week and needed two more. You can do better than that…well, I guess you can’t.

Just looked up the word Classless in the dictionary and saw the word “Mets” and the pictures of Omar Minaya and Fred Wilpon and his son Jeff. To send an email to fire someone, now that is a first. Usually they make a phone call to inform a person or people they are fired.
Wilpon passed the buck when asked who approved the firing. Sorry but Wilpon owns the Mets and ultimately has to approve it. With a payroll of $138M, Minaya holds some of the responsibility for what is wrong with this team.
Very bad move by the Mets and they are being crucified for it. If the Mets think this will provide a spark, think again.

The Met’s firing Willie Randolph in the middle of the night kind of reminds me of Arthur Blank telling Dan Reeves he wouldn’t look for another coach without telling him, then going out and hiring Jr. Mora. We all know how well that turned out.

Jeff Schultz, at least keeping Woodson got rid of Billy Knight. Hawks fans must take their “miracle gifts” from above, one at a time. I love Woodson. I’m glad he stayed. He sits at #2 on my “All-time leader board” for stupidest sports quotes ever with this gem from 2005: “Records are records. I’m not concerned about our record. We can’t CONTROL our record.” Stupifying, isn’t it?
Don Waddell, hired in 1998, was charged with forging a stronger, more dynamic hockey base in the Southeast. Did he do it?? Is Atlanta, GA known as “Hockeytown of the Southeast?” With Cup winners in Raleigh, NC and Tampa Bay, FL, I’d say the answer is “no.” We do have that lovely division title banner hanging from the rafter of Philips Arena.
Speaking of which, Jeff, are you a fan of financial radio host Dave Ramsey? If so, get your big “We’re DEBT FREE!” scream ready, because the Thrashers will FINALLY, FINALLY be rid of this debt to the St. Louis Blues for the Keith Tkachuk rental on June 21st, when the “future considerations” are rendered to the Blues for the return of our “conditional” 1st round draft pick. Oh yes, the Blues also own Atlanta’s 2nd round pick, on June 20th, #33 overall, as a result of the Tkachuk rental, too.
Jeff, I heard it advanced that Don Waddell would never do a bad trade deadline move because it would jeopardize his future chances at another GM job in the NHL. I wonder if anyone places any merit on that argument these days?

A tale of two cities.
The Mets struggle all season…manager Willie Randolph is flame-broiled by the press and eventually fired.
The Braves struggle most of the season, yet grumpy, confused, borderline senile Bobby Cox has tribute pieces written about him every other week.
The AJC’s hard-hitting columnists write stories such as “Braves turning the corner” and “Braves will be in first by July 4th”, along with the “Everybody loves Bobby” pieces.
The two teams are both 6 and a half games out of first
Let’s face it…the AJC powder puff writers are soft, softer and softest.

Jeff, almost always agree with your thoughts, but I have to disagree with #2. IMHO the playoff format that the US Open uses makes it unique and is one of the reasons that this is a great tournament. To me, determining the outcome of our National Championship with a sudden death playoff would be like deciding the Stanley Cup by shootout.

Falcons cut Jimmy Williams. There’s the definition of addition by subtraction. …. Ole Dawg: I’ll try to use small words so you can understand. Being “gutless” has nothing to do with it. You obviously believe Bobby Cox should be fired. I don’t. That doesn’t make me gutless. It just means I have a difference of opinion. …. Darion: How can it be about race when Randolph got the job to begin with? It’s about wins and losses. …. Brendan: nice recap, as always. …. Braves fan: I don’t know a lot about Ponson’s release from Texas, other than this paragraph from a wire story, which doesn’t bode well for his chances of being picked up: Ponson was designated for assignment June 6 despite a 4-1 record and 3.88 ERA for a starting rotation beset by injuries and among the worst in the majors. General manager Jon Daniels has said Ponson was dumped “for disrespecting teammates and club personnel.” …. JS

Jeff… The firing circumstance around Randolph is classless. Willie was one of the best persons I was every around, solid in every catagory. (spent two years with him) There is more action to come surrounding this Mets team, you can bet on that. These kinds of mistakes take a long time to overcome PR wise. Schultz, your an idiot. The United States Open playoff was totally amazing. It was offered on television, and the internet. It gave the world a chance to learn a ton about two golfers, the amazing ability of Tiger Woods, and the great personality and game of Rocco Mediate. Huh?
Well, yes. Of course he authorized all this. He oversaw it. He orchestrated it. It was a well-thought out, “calculated move.” It’s “the next phase” in his daughter’s career. She can’t stay a “teen idol” forever. There’s a shelf life for that. So, he’ll claim that it was Vanity Fair’s exploitation that advanced his daughter’s career to the next level, of sex bomb. Because, well … if it were ever revealed that HE did it, the morality policy would chomp on him for financially exploiting his daughter in a sexual way. It’s easier for him to make it look like someone ELSE did it. Ya know?

I apologize for calling you an idiot Mr. Schultz. That wasn’t very polite of me. I just see golf as one of the last, most pure, and crime free sports left on the planet. It’s a gentleman’s game with the etiquette of champions. If a fraction of the world would have tuned in for this event they may have learnd a thing or two about character, sportsmanship, and great competition. I’m glad it was 18 holes, and the fact that you had to go out and win it with a complete game, and that it wasn’t just given to you because of one bad hole. It gave both men a chance to get loose, and play their game, not just one lucky hole. What if Tiger doubled again on the first? Everyone knows that’s not his game, but he got 18 holes to proove himself, and Rocco showed the fight that we’ve all been wanting to see for years against Tiger. It was out there for millions to see, and as the gentleman said prior, it was electric and over 20,000 showed up for it. I believe the USGA was right on in this.

I agree with you JS. I think UGA should schedule a game w/GSU in ‘10 at the dome.
Sure the Panthers would get pounded into submission, but it would give a big PR boost to GSU, a close “road” game for the Dawgs and their fans, and generate a huge amount of revenue for the GSU atletic dept.
JS in your opinion, do you think that the GSU football program is making the folks on the flats a little nervous?

I also happen to agree with all of your points, including #2 — and I don’t give a darn about golf. I’m surprised, though, that you haven’t commented on the unfortunate demise of baseball’s Hall of Fame game. It figures that the last game, scheduled for Cooperstown yesterday, was rained out. I went to the Braves-Twins game in 2004 (a sellout, of course, as the game always was), and had a great time. Parade down Main St., home run derby (won by Matthew LeCroy of the Twins), the game itself (won by the Braves in extra innings — with Jonathan Schuerholz the hero!). I can’t believe the HOF game has gone out of business.

Jeff, I absolutely agree with your assessment about the Mets classless firing of Randolph. Like most Braves fans, I despise the Mets with every breath in me. If they went 0-162 it would be no tradegy to me. However, it seems to me that a team should still show some professionalism when it comes to personnel moves. Your point of making Willie fly 3,000 miles across the country, to post a win that night, and then to fire him after that win, hits the nail right on the head. I say, if they were going to fire him, they should have either done so either after Sunday’s game, so as not to have him fly 3000 miles, or, they should have waited until later on in their road trip, or until they got back to New York. A lot has also been made of their 3am e-mail to the media informing them of his firing. I agree with this as well. The team should have waited until a decent hour, and held a press conference to announce it, or, at the very least, done so at a time when last night’s sports stories were not already written.
The handling of Randolph’s firing has to rank as one of the all time gutless moves by a professional sports teams. Willie should be glad not to have to work for those bozos any longer.

Hmmn, perhaps the answer is that Miley Cyrus has the potential to actually achieve something with her career? Whereas, Don Waddell shouldn’t even be allowed to enter the Ottawa draft floor on Friday, other than as an invited guest.
Many of us speculate that, somewhere, some very compromising photos of the Spirit Group exist and are presumed to be in the possession of Don Waddell, in his safety deposit box. But I don’t believe that. I think … that what the Spirit Group doesn’t know about hockey … could fill a warehouse. It’s just a case of Bruce Levenson being flimflamed, hoodwinked, and bamboozled by Don Waddell, who, as it turns out, is the brains of the operation.

Interesting what Roger Clemens had to say about the ‘Vanity Fair’ issue: “Magazine was worth the $3.50 but she’s no Mindy McCready.”
As for the idea of a Ga State versus Tech or UGA matchup in 2010, it’s a longshot but I wouldn’t dismiss the possibility. Bill Curry is a master of salesmanship & will utilize every connection. UGA has two open non-conference dates and an off date early season 2010. The unknown variable is how worthwhile the game could be made to either UGA or Tech. Tech’s 2010 non-conference schedule is less flexible. Keep in mind, ‘sports’ isn’t always ‘about sports.’ As an aside, anticipate Georgia SOUTHERN making a strong push to be on UGA’s 2010 schedule — Southern views State as competition for recruits.
One final thing about the Billy Ray Cyrus interview. Yeah, he came across as a buffoon — but were you really surprised? The tv camera adds 10 lbs of weight, not 50 points of IQ

I know I’m a little late in responding to Larry Tate’s blog comparing Bobby to Willie Randolph, but I can’t just let that one go.
Mr. Tate, do you seriously propose that the Braves should let the manager that is 4th in wins ALL TIME go while 4 of his 5 projected starters have been injuried, 2 of his 3 outfielders are injuried, the majority of the bullpen, and Chipper from time to time.
Yes, the Braves are 6 1/2 out, but honestly, with what they’ve been through it’s remarkable they are only that far back at this point.
You give Bobby Cox the Mets payroll and lineup and he has that team in first place, easy.
And yes, maybe the Braves should begin to pattern themselves after a franchise which has become a national punchline with the way they have just fired their manager, give me a break.
What a joke to suggest that what the Mets did was smart and maybe the Braves should take notice.
The Braves are a classy organization and I for one am glad to be a fan of such an organization, even though they are struggling right now.

Did any of you BC apologists ever consider that these injuries might be due to a ST that is more an end-of-winter vacation and owner-financed golf trip, than the conditioning tune-up it is intended to be?

Ole Dawg — I’ll jump on the bandwagon for your “Bobby Cox Spring Training injury theory.”
Of course I also think crop circles, the Illuminati, Dan Quayle, tap water with floride, and the Lindbergh kidnapping have something to do with the Braves’ injury problems this year.

“Ted Striker”; Oh, was BC in charge of all of those too? I didn’t know that! Are you looking in to it?

Yes I agree….it’s was a classless move by the Mets with the way the fired Willie…on the otherhand
I’m very surprised he lasted this long.
