Georgia’s Perno deserves curtain call
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
In seven seasons as Georgia’s football coach, Mark Richt has won two SEC championships, gone to seven bowls, three BCS bowls and finished as high as No. 2 or 3 in the nation (depending on your poll of choice).
In seven seasons as Georgia’s baseball coach, David Perno has won two SEC championships, gone to four NCAA tournaments, three College World Series and finished as high as No. 3 in the nation.
Mark Richt: Athens icon.
David Perno: Athens resident.
Now, I’m not suggesting the “ping” sounds of college baseball should suddenly dominate the sports landscape. I’m guessing Uga has never so much as sniffed a tree by Foley Field, a significant waddle from Sanford Stadium.
But even given baseball’s relative peasant status in college athletics — two words: Omaha, Nebraska — Perno merits something more than a hug from Georgia.
Like maybe some new batting cages.
Stadium renovations.
A raise.
A paperweight.
“Sure, we need all of those things,” he said with a laugh. “I probably need to force things a little more. It’s just not who I am. But no matter what we have, we’ve shown we can be successful. Anybody who was here for our games against Georgia Tech in the regional or the super regional, they saw that we’ve got something special going on.”
Perno played on Georgia’s national title team in 1990. He was an assistant under Ron Polk in 2001, when Georgia went back to Omaha. But when Polk left after that season, the program wasn’t considered a national power. Coaches weren’t falling over themselves for the job. They were barely answering the phone.
“Honestly, I was probably the seventh or eighth choice,” Perno said.
He wasn’t far off. At least three coaches turned it down. Dooley brought in a second-tier group of five candidates. That included Perno, but most figured it was a favor to Dooley’s son, Derek (Perno’s best friend). Dooley, concerned Perno was only 33, had already told him not to get his hopes up.
“He called me in and said, ‘I’ve got to go in a different direction. You’re just too young,’ ” Perno said. “I politely reminded him I was about the same age he was when he got his break. But I remember walking out of his office and he stopped me and said, ‘Just because I’m going in this direction now doesn’t mean things can’t change.’ So he gave me a little bit of hope.”
A few weeks later, on the night of July 20, Perno’s phone rang. It was Dooley.
“His first words to me when he offered me the job were, ‘If I’m going to take a risk, I’m going to take it with you.’ “
Perno’s salary is believed to rank in the bottom third of the SEC. He didn’t break down numbers, but said: “We’re probably middle to bottom tier, after you go through facility, budgets, salaries and in-house resources. We probably have six or seven coaches in our league making over a half-million dollars. But I wouldn’t change places with anybody. If you’re the best in the SEC, you must be doing something right.”
The Dogs just had six players drafted, two in the first round. Their 20-9-1 record in the SEC this season was an all-time school best. The risk paid off.
Asked if somebody at the school just started taking baseball seriously, Perno smiled and said, “Yeah. I did.
“Did I think we would jump on it this early? No. But I always felt we could do this eventually. Being a part of that ‘90 team and knowing Georgia is a great state for amateur baseball, we just needed to have the vision, the direction and the passion to get it done.”
This makes three College World Series in the past five years. If this were football, somebody would be planning a parade route.

I was in Oxford last weekend as were were playing the super regionals and proudly wore my UGA golf shirts to dinner. The friendly people there started talking baseball and I was glad I knew enough to carry on a conversation. These Ole Miss fans then told me good luck, we need the SEC in Omaha. More and more I became proud of our baseball team and was even more proud to be wearing my UGA shirt. Baseball will never equal football because this is te South and more importantly the $$$$$s. I am proud of our baseball team, proud UGA already has two national championships this year and hope Perno can bring a third. No matter what happens w/Miami tonight, I will watch as long as we are in the tournament. DTC

Go Dawgs!!! I plan to be watching tonght. In 1990 I was in KC the week of the CWS, the place I stayed didn’t have ESPN so I didn’t get to watch. But It was an exciting time for his GA fan, just as this time is.

coach Perno deserves far better treatment than he is getting from the athletic department at georgia.
his record is remarkable and probably represents the very best period in georgia baseball history.
once again we have an AD who sleeping on the JOB and not supporting his coaches. the basketball program was being treated the same way and rumors were flying around that coach felton would be fired.
WE need an AD who rewards high performance or one day the loyalty will end and a very good coach will go where they are more appreciated.
it is high time than daman evans to be concern more about his own coaches compensation than his own; MR.EVANS is being paid with the top tier of his comtempories in the conference, MANY OF HIS coaches are not.
clearly, the georgia coaches are taking care of business, but the only one getting his share is of all people MR. DAMON EVANS.
it is time for that to change!

David Perno has done a great job at UGA. One of his best moves was hiring Jason Eller as assistant coach 6 years ago. Coach Eller has been Director of Recruiting for the last 2 years. Jason Eller is personally responsible for redirecting the East Cobb pipeline from Ga Tech to Athens. He is a major reason the Dawgs have been barking in Omaha over the last 5 years. Great job Coach Eller. I’m sure Ole Miss or Auburn will be calling soon!
By SD

Ole Miss and Auburn can steal Eller away and he may improve their teams but he won’t improve talent. The great amatuers in GA will go to UGA, GT, or Kennesaw State becasue of HOPE and the ridiculous limits on baseball scholarships imposed by the NCAA. And, truly, watch out for Kennesaw State now that they are a D-1 program and eligible to play in the NCAA D-1 tourney. Hey, Lipscomb was #3 in that conference but got the nod for the regionals ahead of Kennesaw State and another school because they were too new to D1.

GREAT WIN FOR COACH PERNO AND THE DAWGS!
HOPEFULLY, damon evans was watching as the dawgs defeated the #1 team in the nation.
jeff schultz wrote a very interesting article about the fact that coach perno is one of the lowest paid coaches in the SEC which is alarming ,but it points to the fact once again that our current AD IS NOT SUPPORTING OR COMPENSATING HIS COACHES VERY WELL.
SOME OF YOU ARE IN DENIEL and you are drinking the kool-aid and that is certainly your choice, but i am getting very tired of seeing missteps with damon evans with our coaches and david perno is the latest one.
the ajc has written previously concerning coach richt, felton and perno, but you guys defending evans must have your nose up in his rear, because you are in total denial. i side with the coaches and there is a problem or the ajc would not continue to write ABOUT IT!
MR.EVANS, coach PERNO has led the Dawgs to SEC CHAMPIONSHIPS AND THREE VISITS IN THE COLLEGE WORLD SERIES,PLEASE STEP-UP TO THE PLATE AND DO WHAT IS RIGHT AND PAY THIS GUY WHAT HE IS WORTH.

Evans is an accomplished A-D. He has UGA at the top of the game in profitability, which is a big part of his job. He was groomed for the job by Dooley who has always been in the old school world of finance as far as coaches salaries go. Michael Adams has Damon Evens right under his thumb and Adam”s puts athletics pretty far down on his list of priorities! There in lies the problem—-Somebody(Adams) had better wake up before this great coaching talent is lured away to GREENER pastures. Especially Richt’s assistants!

Great year for the Diamond Dogs and I am proud of the job that Perno has done this year…much better than the 23-33 with basically the same club as last year! Why is it that all of a sudden PErno is overlooked? All those looking at him this year turned a blind eye last year? Check the record books…Chip Towers wrote that Perno was under .500 in his career in the SEC prior to this year. Chances are with what we will lose he will end up under .500 after next…after all in the last two odd numbered years we did not even make the SEC Tournament. I would be upset id Richt followed last year with a sub .500 year.
Don’t get too excited…you too Shultz…I did not see you at any games this year. We are a solid program that with consistency will be a great program. By the way…have you seen the Gymnastics and Tennis facilities or checked out the salaries of those coaches. All at the top of the charts…also look at the national championships they have won…Lets win it in Omaha and then complain!

Big Dawg from Jax… are you nuts… I saw all of those Richt assistants names for all those greener pasture jobs…by the way, the assistants at UGA make more than those at Florida…look it up…and by the way..the assistants at Florida have won a national title!
When was the last time a UGA coach left Georgia for another job without being fired? Look it up! UGA pays at the top, mix it with facilities, school and quality of life and nobody wants to leave! Who was the last UGA football assistant to get a head job? Zero in the Richt era…something must be ok at Georgia
And Hop…why are you on Evans? He looks pretty smart to me…he held off on firing Felton and let the season play out…he gave Richt an $800k raise in a year without a championship of any kind, including SEC East. I’ll bet he has paid Perno a bonus each time he has been to the CWS and won a championship, but I’ll also bet he did not ask him to take a pay cut after a 23-33 season last year with a line-up that included Piesel, Olson, Beckham, Poythress, Lewis and the entire starting rotation and Fields…WTF happened with that club! Also, look it up…Diaz highest paid tennis coach in country, Yoculan…higest paid, Bauerle… top 3… Wallace (WTennis)…Top 5… are you freaking nuts…they have multiple rings!!! Also…one last thing. Evans does this and makes less than the AD at UF, LSU, Arkansas, Alabama and yes Georgia Tech!
I love our admin and coaches…but why is someone always ripping on one or the other. Truth be told…only pay Richt, the rest of them don’t even sniff the return on the investment!

Damon Evans is irrelevant to anything that happens at UGA. Adams had apparently decided to fire Coach Felton, and the team rallied to him in the same way the Auburn football team rallied around Tuberville a few years ago when the devious acting president and AD decided to hire Petrino from Louisville. The only untouchable figure at UGA is Richt, as long as he wins, because a winning football program is what preserves Adams’ million dollar income. That being said, fans in the SEC can be proud of the UGA baseball team. They show tremendous character and determination on the field as well as sportsmanship.

Orel Herschiser was completely unprepared to broadcast the game. He didn’t know the difference between Georgia and Fresno State (both Bulldogs). Twice he referred to the UGA as the lowest seed ever to make it to Omaha and how they were the #4 seed in their regional, making them a 13th or 14th seed overall. Psst, Orel, that would be Fresno St. Georgia has an “8” by their name. Shameful, and no one from ESPN corrected him.

I love UGA baseball and Foley Field; however, the reason that Coach Perno can have equal success to Coach Richt but not receive the equal accolades and pay is because one is college baseball and one is football. If Mark Richt had Suzanne Yoculan’s success he’s be bigger than Bear Bryant. Football is THE college sport. Only basketball comes close in presence. Making comparisons to other college sports is simply unrealistic.

RunningDog, You are correct, football pays the bills ad UGA has the most profitable program in the country. Richt ranks fifth amoung SEC coaches in terms of salary, but I have yet to hear of Him complaining, I think He is happy with what he makes. I DO NOT want to see UGA in the Coache’s salary p** contest with LSU, Bama, Ark, and UF, but I want Richt to be happy. Can You imagine what kind of money someone like T Boone Pickens would throw at Him to coach Okie St? Pickens has given 300 million to Okie State to build the best athletic facilities in the country, I look for them to be in the hunt for a “name” coach soon.

Maybe it’s not the way it should be, but athletic coaches are much closer to being the public face of a University than professors. That said, these coaches make me proud to be an alumnus of the University of Georgia, not because of their success, but because of their character and the way they represent the University. I cannot say the same for the president and Damon Evans is only his puppet.

The 1990 game was actually on CBS; I know this ridiculously obscure piece of trivia because I was in the Seattle airport awaiting a connecting flight just pumping quarters into those old black-and-white pay-as-you-go TVs with screens about the size of a Gameboy (anyone remember those?) I was the only one in that airport who even knew the game was on - but I couldn’t have cared less! Thanks for reminding me of that great memory.

I doubt that many folks would argue that a college baseball coach should make as much as the football or basketball coach, but I do believe that Coach Perno has earned the right to be paid as much as other baseball coachs in the SEC. Also, I remember a couple of weeks ago when there were all these folks calling for his head after the lose to Lipscomb. He’s a good coach and deserves to be rewarded for the job he has done.

You thought it would be the bees (swatted), the wolfpack (a joke with a poor sport coach), and then the canes all with no luck. You sir are one p** poor human being…

Cuz, thanks for bringing up Father’s Day. My Dad is 84 and kickin like a mutha. Me and my boy’s just called him and it was great. As much as I love football, there are so many more important things in life.
Today, I thank the man that made me and raised me. Raised me old school. To say yes sir and yes maam. To open doors for everyone. To help someone in need. To give of yourself when no one else will. That’s a true patron.
Father’s and son’s are about baseball. They go hand in hand. I’m very proud of this GA team and support them all the way. But I just can’t wait for football….. GO DAWGS!!!!!

This article was meant to bring attention to the fact the Perno deserves a raise now, because now he has earned it. DEvans and UGA would have paid him the money if he had shown more consistency in the past. He has been successful every other year. He has now shown that he is elite talent. Just like Felton did, when he won the SEC after struggling to the point of almost losing his job.
Cane fans go away, right now you look like ACC whiners. Win the tournament and then talk.
Tech fans, you don’t have to act stupid to be stupid.

Ummmmmm, Jeff, is there anyone at this freakin paper that can put out a new blog at least every couple of days? I mean, you could talk about the size of your johnson versus the dawgs chances of winning the NC. Or, you could throw something out about tech absolutely trouncing the dawgs come November. Or how about the fact that water’s good for you, and CMR makes the dawgs drink a lot of water during practice. Just give us something new man. If it’s not you, where the hell has Chip been? Throw us a bone guy. This sh!t is gettin’ old. We need someone from the dam AJC to step up and make this long hot summer entertaining. Please placate us real Dawg enthusiasts. Thanks for your time, don’t forget to tip your waitress, I’ll be here all summer.

No, Zeb…there isn’t. Thanks for your support during these sad times!
Chip says that moderators are EXPENSIVE, but management just might go ahead and hire a few.
Stay Tuned!

I LOVE GA BUT, Perno did a AWFUL job of coaching in the CWS! Example 2nd game, up 5-0 & Montgomery was off his game & perno stayed with him to long. Then he saves all our good middle relief pitchers & put in guys that never did anything all year. If he had put in the pitchers we used in the 3rd game in the 3rd inning in game 2, the 10 runs we scored in game 2 would have been enough to win the game! Also game 3, we are down 3-0 in the 5th & they have runners on 1st & 2nd & weaver gets to a 3 & 1 count, instead of throwing the ball right down the middle to Detweiler, Perno should have put him on. Remember the next guy grounded out to end the inning. All I am saying is if a hitter has been killing you like Detweiler has, you dont allow the pitcher to get behind the hitter 3-1 & not put him on! PERNO DID A AWFUL JOB OF MANAGING!!!
