Back in Macon for day two of the state basketball semis. Tonight Class AA takes center stage with four games.
The girls get things going at 4:00 p.m. with unbeaten Model up against Henry County, a three-seed, which has knocked off two 2-seeds and a region champion (Albany) to get to Macon. The other girl’s semi (7:00 p.m.) pits Buford, winners of 29 consecutive games, against Laney, currently on a 21-game win streak.
On the boy’s side, 2006 state champion Dublin (29-1) tries to get back to the title game, taking on Greater Atlanta Christian in the day’s final game at 8:30 p.m. Both teams have won 21 consecutive games.
At 5:30, the Blessed Trinity boys, who defeated two one-seeds in the second round and quarterfinals, battle Greene County, a 3-seed from Region 4-AA.
Should be a great day of basketball. Be back soon with updates.

This Redan-Parkview game is going to be a great game. I’m taking Redan.

Tough moment early on as Model guard Janaye Jasper, already having a solid game (3 pts, ast, stl, reb), gets carried off with an apparent leg injury.
At first it appeared serious as Jasper looked and sounded like she was in a lot of pain. But it might not be as bad as it originally looked. I’ll keep you updated.
Model up 15-5, 4:30 left in the first

Redan 11, Parkview 5 w/ 1:45 left in 1Q.
Parkview didn’t make a basket until 2:55, by Enjoli Johnson off the bench. Redan has scored 8 of its points off offensive rebounds. Redan’s Nia Evans is sitting w/ 2 fouls.
By Todd Holcomb
March 12, 2009 4:14 PM | Link to this
Parkview made a run to cut it to 13-11 at the end of one. Lauren Coleman hit Enjoli Johnson w/ a nice pass on the fast break w/ about 3 seconds left.
No team has a real edge. As most know, Redan is 25-0, and Parkview is 30-1. They’re ranked 1-2 in Class AAAAA.

Model leads 17-9 after one quarter. The Blue Devils have a height advantage inside (two 5-11 players, two 5-10 players and 6-1 Shelby Farrer) to say the least and they’re exploiting smaller Henry County.
Still, Warhawks point guard Lillian Sadler is a solid floor leader and I think she’s capable enough to keep the Warhawks close.
2nd quarter about to get going.

Redan vs. Parkview: Both teams beginning to heat up.
Redan up 22-16. Redan’s Alisha Andrews, Kierra Paige and Quortni Fambro have hit 3’s this quarter. Lauren Coleman hit a 3 for Parkview. Coleman has 7 points for P’view, Enjoli Johnson has 8.

Henry a much-needed timeout at the 2:12 mark of the second quarter. Warhawks just not knocking down enough shots and Model holds a 28-16 edge, its largest lead of the half.

March 12, 2009 4:36 PM | Link to this
Redan leads 27-24 at the half. Excellent second quarter. First quarter was sloppy. Redan hit four 3’s in the 2Q.
Scoring:
P’view — Coleman 8, Johnson 9, Smith 3, Carroll 2, Mason 2
Redan — Paige 8, Dalrymple 4, Brunson 4, Andrews 3, Evans 3, Fambro 3, Daniels 2

I’m finally live from Gwinnett Arena after fighting the good fight against the World Wide Web. The Internet does not want coverage of Class AAAAA girls hoops I take it. Parkview coach Mike McCoy must still use the postal service.
We’re midway through the third quarter (3:23) The lead is being traded back and forth quicker than a hot potato. It’s 34-34 after a trey from Panther junior Lauren Coleman.
Great game. I think this is the state title match here.

March 12, 2009 4:49 PM | Link to this
Maci Siniard’s lay up at the buzzer gives Model a 33-23 halftime lead. The Blue Devils, trying to get to the state championship game and stay unbeaten, led by as many as 14 points.
Henry’s Briana Williams knocked down two threes late and she’ll need to continue to get open looks and knock them down for the Warhawks to have a shot in the 2nd half.
For Model, Alexa Evans lead the way with 11 pts.

March 12, 2009 4:51 PM | Link to this
Make that 39-34, Parkview after back-to-back 3-pointers and a layup in transition for Coleman. Redan looks shaken up. Kind of how I looked when I got the burger/fries/drink combo at the Gwinnett Arena food court and realized it was $15.
The economy is strong within Gwinnett Arena.

March 12, 2009 4:55 PM | Link to this
Henry guard Briana Williams is probably the best player on the court and she’s single-handily keeping the Warhawks in the game.
She just hit 3 of 4 free throws to go with her putback-bucket at the start of the third as Henry stays close, 39-30. 4:50 left
By Glenn LaFollette
March 12, 2009 4:57 PM | Link to this
End of the third quarter, 42-34 Parkview. Panther junior Lauren Coleman actually hit that second 3-pointer I mentioned. Thank you Todd Holcomb for doing my job for me. (As usual. He’s the best we have.) Meaning she’s entering Jordan levels of clutchness. That’s 11 points for her in the quarter.
Coleman has momentum in a headlock and is not letting go.

I really like Redan’s team. There is a reason they’re undefeated. And they’ll probably be better next season. This group finished state-runner up in Class AAAAA a year ago and now the Raiders are mostly junior stars on Rhonda Malone’s team.
So if this game gets away from them, don’t be surprised for three straight Final Four trips. Junior guard MacKenize Dalrymple is a stud. I think sophomores Aneesah Daniels and Kierra Paige impressive at times. Parkview is just an outstanding team. They’re built for this. You can’t beat them in halfcourt.
It’s 53-46 Parkview at the 3:49 mark.

March 12, 2009 5:07 PM | Link to this
Henry County hasn’t made a jump shot since the Carter Administration and Model is more than happy to maintain its double-digit lead, going up 46-32 after three quarters.
Big moment at the 3:46 mark with Henry down 39-30. Williams had an apparent lay up and was headed to the free throw line but was called for a charge. Could’ve been 39-32 or even 39-33; instead Model went on a 7-2 run the rest of the way.
By Kurt Aschermann Jr. AJC
March 12, 2009 5:10 PM | Link to this
Henry needs to get Briana Williams the ball because fellow guards Melissa Perdue and Lillian Sadler have struggled shooting the ball all game. It’s probably Henry’s only hope at this point.
Model gets a timeout, up 49-35 with 6:39 to go.

It’s 55-54 Redan after a steal and layup by Alisha Andrews. She’s small, but the force is strong with her. I may be eating my words soon. Maybe crow won’t cost $15.
By Glenn LaFollette
March 12, 2009 5:15 PM | Link to this
After a wide-open layup for Daniels, Coleman nailed a HUGE 3-pointer at the other end. It’s 59-57 Redan with 16 seconds remaining. Great game. Did I mention it was a great game?
By Glenn LaFollette
March 12, 2009 5:25 PM | Link to this
Aneesah Daniels just went to the line for two free throws. Nailed both and Parkview hit a 3-pointer at the other end with one tick left. It wasn’t enough time, though. I would have enjoyed overtime at this game.
It’s 63-62 Redan. Raiders are moving on to the Final Two. So yeah, so much for them having to wait until next season. Next up, I’m going to predict other useless, untrue moments in history like that Hawks guard Josh Smith is going to lead the league in assists and hugs, Michael Vick will soon be doing commentary at the Westminster Dog Show and Chipper Jones will bat .500 again without Tex behind him in the lineup.
Thank you. Thank you. Now time for Newnan v. Milton.

Yes, Kurt, momentum in a headlock. Lauren Coleman even gave momentum a noogie and then made it go buy her a Coke. She’s a force. Gwinnett is good. I think there are more people here than at the ACC Tournament. Not a good movie taking that baby out of North Carolina.
I’m currently having internet issues, but hopefully we can keep you covered for Milton v. Newnan. I like getting to see Eagles sophomore Julian Royal and Newnan senior Russell Powell.
Eat a Nu-Way Weenie for me, will you please? I love Macon.

Model’s front line was way too much for Henry County to deal with in the Blue Devils 63-50 victory. 5-11 Maci Siniard had 18 points and nine rebounds and 6-1 Shelby Farrer added 13 and 9. The only Henry player that came close in size was 5-10 Kylaine Rogers, who gave a spirited effort down low.
Great game for Briana Williams, who scored a game-high 28 pts. But Williams, who is just a junior, didn’t get enough help. Henry lives and dies with its guards and today they died with Williams’ supporting cast.
First boys game of the day coming up - Greene County and Blessed Trinity. Going to make my first prediction of the night:
Greene County 64, BT 52

Quite a start for Blessed Trinity guard Ryan LeGates. He’s got 7 points and two assists as the Titans have come out playing well, up 12-5 with 4:00 left in the first.

We’re at the end of the first quarter for Milton v. Newnan. It’s Eagles 16-12.
Best moment so far was an impressive dunk in transition by Eagle guard Dai-Jon Parker. He added a foul shot to give Milton a 10-point lead.
Newnan’s Larry Harden has put together a great first quarter, including a 3-pointer at the buzzer to pull with-in four. Royal has been quite so far, but Milton sophomore Shannon Scott started the period with six-straight points.
By Glenn LaFollette
March 12, 2009 5:58 PM | Link to this
Observation: Newnan came in with some great t-shirts reading “Newnan has got that Swagg.” It’s actually “Swag” but the Cougars have so much of it they hold the right to an extra g.
Also, one of the Milton assistant coaches is wearing pinkish, red pants and shoes in honor of the school’s colors. I was going to wear the same exact ones. That could have been embarrassing.
It’s 16-14 Milton at the six minute mark.

Blessed Trinity started hot and has jumped out to an 18-9 cushion after one quarter. Greene County cold shooting so far, but I’ve got a feeling the Tigers will get going soon.
LeGates finishes the quarter with 6 points, not 7 as I had originally stated, Five pts. for Arris Brundidge.

We’re at the half. Milton 27-21. It’s been a very slow first half. I’m not an expert, I just play one on the internet, but I don’t see the winner of this game beating either Westlake or Wheeler. So consider this the “Thanks for Coming Invitational.”

Moment of note: Milton’s Dai-Jon Parker out-hussled three Newnan players in transition to hunt down a ball that was meant to be an easy Cougar layup. It’s 39-33 Milton at the two minute mark in the third.

Milton 39, Newnan 38: Mr. Wells I’m inclined to believe you. The Cougars have upped the defense, and we’re finally seeing some transition play. I actually felt compelled to look away from my oh-so-tasty Dippin’ Dots to watch the game. It’s the Ice Cream of the Future.
If it continues like this, Newnan could pull away in the second half. Blame Milton’s youth.

Shannon Scott just channeled the spirit of LeBron James for a “crab dribble” and a layup for a 52-42 Milton lead. Moments later, Newnan’s Russell Powell seemed to question the officials as to their ideas of what traveling is. No connection, I’m sure.

Great games for Ryan LeGates and Arrius Brundidge as Blessed Trinity rolls into the AA title game, 62-46 over a bewildered Greene County team.
The two each finished with 23 points to pace the Titans, who had control of the game from the start.
Greene County struggled shooting all night and LeGates and Brundidge were awesome. Simple as that.

Final: Milton 64, Newnan 53
The young Eagles will face the Westlake/Wheeler at 8:45pm for the Class AAAAA Championship. My guess is no one saw that coming. Milton has a lot to work with beyond Julian Royal in the middle. Shannon Scott is a consistent threat on offense, and Dai-Jon Parker is lighting in a bottle on both ends of the floor. Those kids are all sophomores.
Milton (24-7) has won four-straight, with its last loss coming to Wheeler, 65-53, on Feb. 20.
Newnan finishes 26-4 up from 19-9 a year ago along with a first round state tournament loss. Good season for the Cougars, who will return junior Larry Harden.
Leaders: Newnan Larry Harden 14 points, Milton: Shannon Scott 19 points

I’m sorry, did I say Greene County, 64-52?
I must’ve meant nearly the exact opposite - BT 62-46.
In all seriousness, though, Blessed Trinity was pretty impressive. I still think they may need to find another offensive weapon (though LeGates and Brundidge were very good tonight) to beat either Dublin or Greater Atlanta Christian. But the two-man game sure worked this time.

Quick recap of the day so far:
Class AA girls Model 63, Henry County 50 Shelby Farrer and Maci Siniard took much inside for the smaller Warhawks, who were led by Briana Williams (28 pts.). Model goes for state title No. 2, Saturday.
Class AA boys Blessed Trinity 62, Greene County 46 LeGates/Brundidge duo reminds some of Jordan/Pippen, or at the very least, LeGates/Brundidge. Two combine for 46 points; Titans headed to AA title game.

Class AAAAA Semifinals: Nuggets to Know
Marietta (24-7) vs. Beach (28-4) The Bulldogs remain a mystery to me, so I’m looking forward to this team. They beat Westlake, so they’ve got something working for them. Seniors Monique Willis and Khalilah Walton are the names to know.
The Blue Devils are led by Telia McCall, Brittney Echols, Brittany White and Courtney Sprague. I saw this group a lot last season. McCall is the centerpiece, scoring 28 points in the first round against Lassiter, but White is a beast on defense and fun to watch. I have yet to see them play this season, but Ken Sprague is a great coach and looking for his first state title. Should be interesting.
By Glenn LaFollette
March 12, 2009 7:23 PM | Link to this
Marietta’s Telia McCall just stole a pass, took it the length of the court, nailed a layup and drew a foul. Yes, she’s a post player. This led to an 8-0 lead at the 4:56 mark and a Beach timeout. It’s all Marietta early.

Marietta 11, Beach 8 at the end of the first quarter
The Bulldogs got some help at the foul line but haven’t found anything consistent on offense. They’re getting there it seems. Marietta’s defense has been great. McCall is showing why she’s one of the best in the state.

Buford guard Andraya Carter is very impressive at the point. She and Blanche Alverson look like they’ve been playing together for 10 years. They hooked up on two field goals late in the first quarter and Alysha Rudnick, one of the state’s top softball players, drained a three-pointer at the buzzer to give the Wolves a 27-15 lead after one. Buford on pace for 104 points.

Buford pulling away from Laney, ahead 37-17 with 4:27 left in the second quarter.
Couple things going wrong for Laney: they’re getting killed on the offensive glass; too many 2nd chance opportunities for Buford. And the trio of Andraya Carter/Blanche Alverson/Alysha Rudnick has been very good.
Buford runs its offense like a small college team; it’s quite impressive. Plus, the Wolves defensive pressure is getting to the Laney guards.

I see high school recruiting is a big issue to you guys. Wheeler coach Doug Lipscomb just walked by. I was going to ask him about the subject, but he was too busy buying Milton’s Julian Royal some ice cream. So I’ll get back to him on that question later.

Halftime - Buford up big, 44-25. Blanche Alverson had a huge first half, collecting 18 points and five boards. Alysha Rudnick (7 pts) and Andraya Carter and Jocelyn Danley (5 pts each) helping out as well.
Laney led by Brianna Eubanks’ 10 points.
Looks like a heavyweight match up is on the horizon in Class AA between Model and Buford.
Interesting to see how Model plays without leading scorer Janaye Jasper, who coach Sally Echols told me probably was out for the title game.

Wouldn’t be a problem..but how could you institute it? Would you punish kids who moved to go to Magnet schools? Why are they any different? Do you punish coaches who move from school to school? It’s not like the kids have a choice..if a parent moves, they have to go. Should they be punished because of that?

Carter could be the best freshman girls player in the state, but that’s a hard question to answer. Does anyone know of any other names that would be on that list?
Also, after seeing Milton and it’s corps of talented sophomores, can anyone name a better second-year player than Julian Royal?
There are some Dippin’ Dots here with your name on it if you can feed me some info. It’s a big state, and I be but one small man.

Marietta 36, Beach 16 at teh 4:41 mark in the third
Blue Devils guard Brittney Echols (whom I keep confusing with Brittany White) just nailed a trey and took a steal for a bucket to give Marietta a 20 point advantage. Beach is coming out of a full timeout and needs an adjustment before this gets ugly.
Does anyone thing Redan-Marietta is a good matchup? I tend to think the Raiders are loaded, but having a superstar like McCall helps any team.

Coach David Boyd is now 7-0 in semifinals. He’s 4-2 in finals, making him 11-2 in the ‘Final Four’. This is with four schools.

2000 - Berkmar

Coming tomorrow, I, Chris Whitfield, the gut-busting guru of gridiron guessing will be blogging live from Macon, reliving every state title won by Westover and Dontonio Wingfield from my college days straight from the heart of Georgia. (Shameless plug for WMAZ).
Lots of good stuff on tap for the weekend, with Class A, AA and AAA state finals to be held on Saturday. Truly looking forward to finally seeing Whitefield (shameless plug for a school that almost shares my last name — history lesson coming on that as well) Academy in action, and seeing if they win a state title. Would be karma after losing two players to a McEachern team that again failed to put together a state title run.

Marietta 44, Beach 28 at the end of the third
The Bulldogs pressure has been a problem at times for Marietta, but it only seemed to matter when B. White wasn’t on the floor. I could have missed a turnover or two. White doesn’t score much, but she seems to be huge in moving the ball for the Blue Devils.

Where has Monique Willis been? I just saw the Bulldog senior shake a defender with a nice shoulder move and nail a 10-foot jumper. It’s was a thing of beauty. The basket pulled Beach with-in nine points but Telia McCall answered back with a layup. It’s getting interesting. Beach will need something special to cut the lead below double digits.

Final: Marietta 58, Beach 40
The Blue Devils advance to face Redan in the Class AAAAA state championship game at 7 p.m. at Gwinnett Arena. Great matchup between an undefeated, deep and powerful team against a Marietta squad that has its fair share of star-power and experience in big games. Amazing that with only three loses a year ago, Marietta (28-3 in 2008) couldn’t get to this point. They seem battle tested this year.

Wheeler (23-7) vs. Westlake (25-6)
Need to know: The Lions are one of the few teams that are as loaded as the Wildcats. The GHSA media guide told me that, but it’s easy to see. Westlake features 6-foot-7 Clemson commitment Marcus Thorton. The matchup between him and Wheeler’s Ari Stewart will be one of the best in the Final Four.
Wheeler also has Richard Howell and Phil Taylor. This team has a monkey on its back for all that Norcross success of late. You want to be the team of the decade, you win this game, Wheeler. Westlake has won 14 in-a-row coming in. With Javoris Bryant at the point, they’re a quick, athletic group.
I look forward to counting the dunks in this game. Stay tuned.

Wolf - you might be right, but I was really happy with what I saw out of Model earlier today. Henry County is no Buford, though. The post match ups will be fantastic.
Alverson, Carter and Rudnick combined for 48 of Buford’s 68 pts. Wolves coach Gene Durden afterwards:
“I was pleased with the effort; our kids really had a business-like mentality.”
“Without the games (the big 3) played, we don’t win.”

No, I wouldn’t say Marietta got bored. There are some good defenders on Beach’s roster. The Bulldogs just got down too much. They made a run with pressing defense, but Marietta didn’t have to do too much up 20 points.

Both teams were better off in that first half pounding the ball down low and letting the trees sort if out. GAC big man Trent Wiedeman led all scorers with 13, while Elliot Long had 8 off the bench for a Spartans team trying to get to the title game and win the school’s first state crown since 1977.
Dublin point guard nine points and four assists to lead them. Sherrard Brantley added 8.

Half: Wheeler 32, Westlake 21
Interesting first half. The Wildcats are getting everything they want from beyond the arc. Three treys from PG Phil Taylor have been great. The junior is worth the price of admission. He’s been active on both ends driving and dishing and saving balls out of bounds. He can play on my team at LA Fitness anytime he wants.
Taylor has nine points, but Ari Stewart leads the field with a dime. Richard Howell added six in the first half.
Chad Johnson topped Westlake with six points. The Lions can’t seem to find anything on offense unless it’s in transition or they can set something up before Wheeler gets in the zone. They could desperately use an outside threat. Anything to shake up that zone. The Lions have used Marcus Thornton in the middle to feed him for a look and dish. It’s not working though.

3 of 3 is much more impressive - especially since 2000 when the “culture” of HS ball changed. The transfer of Causey to Berkmar from Hall County brought the idea of transfers to the massess. Before that, it was swept under the rug and teams like wheeler that did it weren’t talked about. The Causey transfer changed all that. It got HUGE media attention and all of the sudden, parents were reading the paper and getting ideas.
Since then, HS ball in Atlanta changed forever. The fact that Norcross won three straight is far more impressive than Wheeler’s feat. It is more impressive because of the fact that so many teams had transfers and QUALITY transfers.

I am not a biased fan. But when I think of the most well sustained high school basketball program in the state, Wheeler is the first team I think of. I have lived here 15 years and have heard of their feats time and time again. Credit that to excellent coaching. How long has Lipscomb been there anyway?
By WildcatMan
March 12, 2009 11:47 PM | Link to this
4 In 8 (possibly Wheeler) verses 3 in 3 Norcross. This speaks highly of both teams. 3 in 3 speaks highly of the players that were at the program. 4 in 8 speaks highly of the program. 4 in 8 plus semi and final appearances plus a fifth championship in late 1990’s (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shareef_Abdur-Rahim) when Shareef, Mr. GA Basketball got all started at Wheeler speaks highly of Coach Lipscomb, who should be hired by UGA or Tech as an assistant if only to help keep GA basketball players in the state.
Wheeler played well tonight except one troubling area … Richard Howell. What is the deal with his desire to put the ball on the floor. He single handedly kept Westlake in the game with at least 8+ turnovers. His best moment was when he received the bal down on block, was tripled teamed, kicked it out to Taylor, who shot, missed and Joey rebounded and put the ball back in on the weak side. Howell seems to want to play from top of key to top of key.
Milton’s guards will eat Howell alive if he puts the ball on the floor. Boyd was watching every play like the good coach he is. Hopefully Sidney Lowe, Coach for NC State did not drive up from the dome to see his recruit … he might have revoked the offer after tonight’s game.
Taylor, Jerome, Cochran, Stewart, Tiller, and the young freshman big man 50 played great.

wildcat- i think it was of partial design, not sure of course just a guess, but one thing westlake did have was size, with 2 big guys that could bang on richard…..thornton is athletic and the #31 was just a big body, so i think wheeler wanted to make it a game revolving around phil and arion the perimeter. richard didnt play great tonight, but even the good ones have off nights…wheeler had a huge advantage on the wings with phil and ari so i believe that was the gameplan as opposed to richard on the low block….but regardless he does need to cut the turnovers down tomorrow whether hes down low or up top
By Fin

@Wildcat Man…I agree with all your statements. I believe that Howell continued to handle the ball in an effort to give Phil Taylor a break due to the tremendous pressure that teams put on him in the backcourt b/c Wheeler doesnt’ have any backup Point Guards. But you’re right..he turned the ball over ALOT tonight. Richard is a great player, however I would like to see him in the post a lot more. He is a strong young man and he should be able to get position on ANYONE.
The coach from Wake Forest..Dean G was there and I must say that he was probably quite impressed with Ari tonight.

Wildcat Man is correct. Howell had the worst game I have ever seen him play. Hats off to Joey for stepping up and playing a great game. He had key offensive rebounds when Howell was just standing around, blocked shots at crucial times and just flat out husted and made things happen.
Phil was great, Ari had a good first half, but was pretty quiet from the middle of the third to the end of the game. Wheeler had a 48 - 28 lead with just under 3:00 in the third period and just let up and played sloppy the rest of the way. Again, Karl Cochran played some great defense. He had an awesome block that bounced right back into Westlake’s hands and a put back, but nonetheless, it was an awesome block. Karl also made some key baskets off of steals and via some nice passes from Phil.
As they say, it is hard for a team to beat someone three times in a season. Milton will be ready, but I have to say, Milton didn’t look too sharp tonight. Newnan had no right to be in State Semi-finals, but it might just be that I am used to seeing Wheeler, Walton, Centennial, Milton and Lassiter play. Any of those teams would have beaten Newnan, and Westlake for that matter, in my opinion.
I am looking forward to a great game tomorrow night.

Wildcat man …..nailed it. Howell will be a big time loser at NC State. His attitude is a disaster waiting to happen. Without super talent around him Westlake beats their a$$. Wake gets the winner in Stewart. I’ve seen many of the best over the last 15 years and Howell is no where there. What the hell is he thinking? I sat down front and watched Lipscomb, he was having a canary.

As a former Milton basketball player(from back when the program SUCKED), I will be there tonight to watch my alma mater try to finish this improbable run. But from the looks of this blog, we should just go ahead and pack it in and not even show up. Sure, Wheeler is a long time state powerhouse but I don’t see our young team rolling over and playing dead. And from what I’m reading about Boyd, I’m not so sure you can chalk up a big advantage with Lipscomb’s coaching. So, as they say, that is why they play the game. Its hard to beat anybody 3 times in one season(example: GT over Clemson), and didn’t Wheeler lose one of their key players from those 2 previous wins?

milton crab- tate was already out when they met in the region tournament, and no one is overlooking milton, trust me…they are young but very talented, wheeler wont be taking them lightly
and bill: with respect to someone i dont even know and over a blog, if you think richard howell is a bad player then you honestly havent got a clue about what a talented player is…one off night does not make someone a crap player…for someone who watched for “fifteen plus years” i would of expected you to know that

Milton Crabapple … Milton has a great young team … fun to watch. Boyd is a great coach. Do not take my earlier comments concerning Howell as a knock on Lipscomb. I have seen him win state Championships with far less talent. He did a great job the year Quinnel Green was a Sr. Green was the only player on the team that could dunk a basketball … and he played small forward.
Wheeler did loose Tate but he failed chemistry and I’m not talking the classroom kind so he is no longer on the team… score one for Lipscomb. Any other team loosing 20+ points per game would have a tough time recovering this quickly in the state playoffs. Since that time Wheeler has returned to intense defense. Karl and Joey have stepped up in a big way. The scores, Taylor and Stewart have room to fill up the basket. Howell just needs to remember this is not AAU.
Milton will play a different team. Wheeler beat Milton in the region tourney without Tate and finished the Championship against Centinnial by a score difference of 20 pts without Tate also. Wheeler is better now.
It will be a great game … GO REGION 6 AAAAA and GO WILDCATS!

To William: What makes Joey Jerome so big at 6’4” is his arms. I was just noticing last night how long they are. They must be the wing span of someone 6’10”.
Regarding Howell: There must have been something going on with him. He played horribly, and he doesn’t usually play with much intensity, but last night by looking at him, you would have thought his grandmother had just died. I don’t know, maybe she did, but hopefully he will come out tonight and play like he did in the Region Tournament.
To Milton Crabapple: No one is looking past Milton. You are correct, it is hard to beat a team three times in a season. Milton is on a roll. However, they didn’t look too strong last night. Their opponent was one of the weakest State Semi-finalist that I have seen in a while. Both teams need to pick it up and play their best so we can see a great State Championship tonight!

Both 5A boys games were boring last night. Wheeler is clearly the cream of the crop the way the playing and I can’t believe Newnan and Milton are actually in the Final 4. After a very exciting regular season, this years finals are less than intriguing. I’ll save my $10 tonight and watch online to see if the first quarter is even competitive. Wheeler by 15+ tonight and could easily be 25+.

Some one commented that Wheeler may have the best guard combo they’ve ever had. I would disagree. Best guard combo in my memory, which goes back to pre-Lipscomb days, would be Sharaud Curry at point and David Gonzalvez at shooting guard (2005 state champs). And when J.T. Tiller spelled David, I think the combo was even better.
Sharaud has had a great career at Providence and I hope he get the chance to go to the Big Dance this year. J.T. will definitely be there with Missouri and every one will get a chance to see one of the best defensive players in the country.
Go Cats!! Bring home another title tonight!!

haha well “upsetcity” save your money and i will go watch a great wildcat team vs a great eagle team tonight. The eagles didnt play great but they were cruising cause they knew Newnan didnt have a chance. But they will be ready for the wildcats its the 3 meeting and it will be the best. Milton is very talented and we already know about wheeler. Man its going to be crazy but i can only hope the eagles bring it home to the northside

GAC coach Eddie Martin failed in his bid to win state titles at two schools, as Dublin beat GAC in the semifinals in Macon. There will be more chances for Coach Martin, who won at Norcross in 2006, 2007 and 2008. But if anyone is interested, here are the boys coaches in state history who have won titles at two schools. How many of these names do you recognize? Besides David Boyd, of course. Boyd’s Milton team is going for the title tonight. Boyd is the only coach to have won titles at three schools, and now he’s going for four.
Anzy Hardman (Woodbury, Taylor County)
Bill Hardin (Turner County, Montezuma)
David Boyd (Campbell, Tucker, Berkmar)
David Jones (SW Atlanta, Southside)
Don Dollar (Eva Thomas, Douglass)
Hal Scott (Nahunta, Savannah)
J.L. Padgett (Jeff Davis, Osborne)
Joseph Williams (Clay County, Randolph-Clay)
Kenneth Ross (Murray County, College Park)
Norman Faircloth (Cochran, Fort Valley)
Wallace “Country” Childs (Irwinville, Blackshear)

I wonder if Richard Howell will show up tonight. He’s played poorly in the last 3 games. Although a very good high school player, I don’t see him standing out at the next level especially in the ACC. He has zero intensity.

Ken Ross was the JV coach at my high school in the mid 90s. We never knew that he was this state champion coach at first.
