South Georgia basketball doesn’t get the respect it deserves. Neither, the Lady Cats or the Bearcats were rank in the top ten of AAAA at the end of the regular season. Both teams have proven that they deserved to be repected. GO PURPLE AND GOLD!

Wesleyan up 16-12 through one quarter from Macon. Sharpshooter Erin Hall hit three long 3-pointers to pace the Gwinnett County private school, searching for their sixth consecutive state finals appearance.

Despite 10 turnovers, Randolph Clay staying close thanks to some good work on the glass, out-rebounding Wesleyan 12-4.

Junior Destiny Mitchell led Randolph Clay with six first quarter points, including four during a 7-0 run. But Hall was too much to handle.

Second quarter underway.

R-Clay with a much needed timeout at the 5:31 mark of the second quarter. Wesleyan too good from the outside as Logan Morris just hit the Wolves’ fifth three-pointer of the game to go up 24-14.

Red Devils have turned the ball over 13 times through the game’s first 10:30 and that’s not going to get it done against a team like Wesleyan.

Bainbridge’s boys and girls were ranked No. 7 by the Associated Press entering the state tournament. The boys beat another South Georgia team, Statesboro, ranked No. 4, to make the semifinals. Bainbridge’s girls were the highest-ranked team in their quarter and made the final four as expected based on rankings. Nothing has happened so far to suggest in any way that South Georgia teams were not respected enough in the rankings.

Wesleyan had a terrific second quarter, out-scoring R-Clay 27-8 in building a 43-20 halftime lead.

The 27-4 Wolves seem unaware that a 3-point line exists, bombing from everywhere on the court. They hit eight threes, and along with an intense full-court press that helped force 18 first-half turnovers, this game got out of hand in a hurry.

Be back soon with halftime stats.

SW Dekalb (girls) 48, Bainbridge 27…Halftime….SW coach Kathy Walton finally got her wish as the young Panthers put it all together. Forward Kayla Lewis showed everyone why she is among the state’s top juniors by scoring 16 points on 7 of 7 shooting, including two 3-pointers.

Some halftime numbers:

Wesleyan led by Erin Hall - 12 points, all on three-pointers; Grace Leah Baughn added nine points and Logan Morris eight for the Wolves, who lead 43-20.

R-Clay led by Casey Sands and Destiny Mitchell, who each have six points. Asha Alexander chipped in with seven rebounds and a couple of assists.

Big stories are Wesleyan’s three-point shooting (eight knocked down in first half) and the Red Devils turnover problems (18 in first half).

Second half underway..

Wolves out and running early in the third, forcing a Randolph Clay timeout at the 6:46 mark.

SW Dekalb 61, Bainbridge 36…(girls).3rd Quarter..1:31 left….To capsulize SW’s day so far can be summed by Kayla Lewis’ steal, hard dribble, then dish off to junior guard Alondra Rivers, who promptly dealed off to junior Chancie Dunn for a lay in…

R-Clay’s Destiny Mitchell is having a fine game to help keep the Re Devils within striking distance of Wesleyan.

The junior has 20 points and 10 rebounds at the 3:00 mark of the third and R-Clay’s 11-0 run trims Wesleyan’s lead to 51-35.

SW Dekalb 68, Bainbridge 39 (girls) End of 3rd Quarter……SW caps the third in another familiar sequence with junior Kayla Lewis grabbing a loose ball and tossing ahead to Alondra Rivers for a lay up just before the quarter buzzer. Bainbridge standout junior Alexis Burke has been hampered with foul trouble all afternoon.

By Kurt Aschermann Jr

March 11, 2009 5:22 PM | Link to this

It’s all over from Macon. Last year’s Class AA champion Wesleyan advances to this year’s Class A championship game with a 84-59 victory over Randolph Clay.

For all intents and purposes, Wesleyan put the game away during the second quarter when it out-scored R-Clay 34-6 to build a 43-20 halftime advantage.

Looking forward to seeing the second Class A semi final tonight between Baylor-bound Mariah Chandler and Southwest Atlanta Christian and Savannah Country Day. After seeing Wesleyan run and gun against R-Clay, I can’t imagine either team being able to stay with the Wolves, but we’ll see.

Be back soon with Turner County-Athens Christian updates.

SW Dekalb 80, Bainbridge 48 (girls)…Final…..SW’s aim of winning a second straight Class AAAA championship is alive and well. The Panthers (28-4) face the winner of tonight’s Fayette County-Jonesboro with a real possibility of a rematch from last year’s title game between SW and Fayette.

SW was led by Kayla Lewis’ 24, who also put together a nice all-around floor game. Fellow junior Alondra Rivers added 15 while senior Jamesha Blake had 9.

Bainbridge (24-6) was led by senior Zaikia Dawson’s 19 and junior Alexis Burke’s 13.

Ugly first quarter in the first boy’s Class A semi final of the day.

Athens Christian got a late three-point play from Chaz Sheets to go up 17-15 after one quarter.

Both teams’ fans seem to think it’s the referees’ fault that neither team can knock down any shots or hang onto the ball, but that’s basketball fans.

Athens Christian coach Ron Link with a quick timeout at the start of the second quarter and it’s needed. Athens has no answer for Turner County’s inside game, which has produced a majority of the Rebels’ 27 points.

Bainbridge Score ??????

By Rob Morton AJC

March 11, 2009 6:15 PM | Link to this

Bainbridge 37, Tucker 33 (boys) Halftime…..The Bearcats lead 30-20 late in the second quarter when Tucker countered with a trio of 3-pointers to cut the margin. Senior Chris Kingsberry had two of those on consecutive possessions but Bainbridge’s Marquis Williams tempered the momentum by banking a trey with :02 left.

By Kurt Aschermann Jr

March 11, 2009 6:15 PM | Link to this

Turner County started knocking down some shots and head into the locker room up 38-28.

The Rebels started the second quarter pounding the ball inside to their big sophomore Breon Dixon, who had eight points on four easy buckets to give Turner a 31-21 lead. Later, Turner County, which hasn’t lost since last December 6, got outside jumpers from Tray Pearce, Chris Spears and Todd Lawson for a 7-2 run to close the half.

Tucker 72, Bainbridge 66 Final…..The Tigers reach the Class AAAA state final for the second time over the past three seasons and could face a fellow Region 6-AAAA member again for the championship with Miller Grove a favorite over Richmond Academy in tonight’s last game. Tucker upset Columbia to win it all in 2007.

Tucker was once again led by Manny Atkins with 28 points. Senior Chris Kingsberry added 15 and junior Brandon Dawson 11.

Senior guard Marquis Williams led Bainbridge with 23, including seven made 3-pointers while James Lodman and Melzie Johnson had 10 each.

All Savannah Country Day in the first quarter as the Hornets lead 19-8.

The shooting has been phenomenal for SCD. Katherine Dotson hit her 2nd three-pointer of the quarter at the buzzer.

Southwest, meanwhile, took more than 5 1/2 minutes to score their first points of the game and have to find a way to get Baylor comit Mariah Chandler involved more.

By Rob Morton AJC

March 11, 2009 7:47 PM | Link to this

Fayette County 29, Jonesboro 12 (girls)….2 minute left in 1st half….The Tigers have found their stride by unleashing a 14-3 run….Junior Anma Onyeuku has spurred it by sinking two inside baskets and then turning her own shot block into a breakaway lay up after gathering in a nice dish off from Florida-bound Tessah Holt

By Kurt Aschermann Jr

March 11, 2009 7:50 PM | Link to this

Southwest Atlanta Christian still hasn’t shown up for this Class A semi final as Savannah Country Day completely took Mariah Chandler out of the game and dominated the first half, going up 33-12.

Katelyn Hilliard (9 pts.); Blake Stafford (8) and Melissa Burkhamer and Katherine Dotson (6 each) lead the way for the Hornets.

Chandler had one point and double and triple teams have frustrated the Baylor commit. Point guard Mariah Eades leads the Warriors, in the semi finals for the fourth consecutive season, with seven points.

By Kurt Aschermann Jr

March 11, 2009 8:10 PM | Link to this

SCD on a 10-0 run to grab a 47-23 lead. With the way SCD is shooting and with Mariah Chandler hobbling on a bum knee, I’d be very surprised to see Southwest Atlanta get to within even 15 points before this one is over. It’s been that one-sided.

Did anyone else notice the poor sportsmanship of Destiny Miller after the Randolph-Clay loss to Wesleyan? She stormed off the court and did not participate in the traditional greeting between teams that occurs after games.

I sure hope her coach sits her down for a big helping of attitude adjustment.

She played well and had nothing to be ashamed of - at least, until that act. Class-less. Very.

Fayette County 43, Jonesboro 41.(girls)…Final….Tigers’ Tessah Holt provided the game winner with a jumper with 2:15 left and followed that with a driving pull up a minute later that made it 43-39. Jonesboro still had its chances after senior Joi Holyfield countered Holt’s second bucket with one of her own. Jonesboro forced a turnover in the final 20 seconds but its two close in shots to tie the game did not find the mark.

Fayette (31-0) was led by junior Anma Onyeuku’s 23 while Holyfield’s 16 led Jonesboro (29-2).

Fayette now faces SW Dekalb for the second straight year in the Class AAAA championship game. Tip off 3 p.m. Friday at Gwinnett Arena.

By Kurt Aschermann Jr

One of the more one-sided semi final games I can remember as Savannah Country Day completely dominates Southwest Atlanta Christian in a 68-38 laugher.

Katelyn Hilliard led a shooting onslaught, scoring 22 points, while Katherine Dotson added 14 with nine assists and PG Melissa Burkhamer had ten points and nine assists.

Great quote from SCD coach Dale Parker on the Hornets’ finals opponent, Wesleyan:

“I think Wesleyan turned down an NCAA bid to be here,” Parker said. “I think we’ll have to play our best game of the year.”

Should be a good final.

I’m amazed at the athleticism of both teams; lots of run and gun. There’s nothing like watching two athletic, well-coached teams go at each other and that’s what we’ve got here in the nightcap.

Kurt,

What patterns are you seeing in the first quarter of Whitefield - Wilcox?

By Rob Morton AJC

March 11, 2009 9:04 PM | Link to this

Miller Grove 18, Richmond Academy 17….End of 1st Quarter….RC is taking it to the taller and more acclaimed Wolverines. The Musketeers are beating MG on the boards with pure effort. Miller Groves’ highlight are three dunks by Steven Hill (sorry but this is not a broken record from last weekend)…

By Kurt Aschermann Jr

March 11, 2009 9:07 PM | Link to this

Nick Marshall with a late three-pointer to give Wilcox a 19-17 lead after one quarter.

Whitefield, which hasn’t lost to a Class A team this season and blew out its first three tournament opponents by an average of 26 pts. per game, is getting all they can handle from Wilcox.

By Kurt Aschermann Jr

March 11, 2009 9:14 PM | Link to this

Wolfpack fan -

I think Whitefield obviously wants to get the ball into their bigs, while Wilcox is more inclined to shoot from the outside.

Wilcox certainly seems like the more energized team early on, but the Patriots guards need to calm down a bit, especially sophomore Nick Marshall, who tends to force the issue.

Kennard Backman and Brandon Reed have been impressive so far for Whitefield.

By Rob Morton AJC

March 11, 2009 9:17 PM | Link to this

Miller Grove 37, Richmond Academy 26…2:18 left in the 2nd….RC’s Raston Brown cut the margin to two points on a 3-pointer but Miller Grove countered right back with two treys by sub Adarius Fulton and a driving three-point play by Mfon Udofia….

By Kurt Aschermann Jr

The referees called three lane violations on free throws in the first half and I didn’t see any of the three. Maybe the Turner County fans were right - the refs are watching a different game than the rest of us….

Halftime - Wilcox up 33-32. Nick Marshall with 12 points, Kwamaine Outlaw with 8 for the Patriots. Whitefield led by Brandon Reed, with 11 points and Kennard Backman chipping in with 8.

By Wolfpack fan

By Rob Morton AJC

March 11, 2009 9:32 PM | Link to this

Miller Grove 46, Richmond Academy 29…Half……Another example of what MG opponents know all too well - depth matters. No other team statewide has three usable centers. Starter Tony Parker bullies in for a couple baskets, 6-foot-8 Donte Williams blocks two shots and effects two others and third-teamer in 6-5, 225-pound Xavier McGahee does enough dirty work to help turn this game into a potential upset alert into another rout….

SCD’s Hornets, with four senior starters who have been to the Elite Eight or Final Four for four years running, is the only team in this tournament with a shot at Wesleyan. I may sound like a broken record, but Wilcox guard Nick Marshall needs to start involving his teammates more.

He’s an exciting young player, but he’s too out of control and turns the ball over too much to be running the point in a game this big.

Noteworthy: since Wilcox County’s Quez Mohogany (how about that name?) picked up a technical foul with 6:04 to go in the third quarter and the Pats up 37-36, Whitefield is on a 28-15 run and leads 64-52 with 4:44 left.

Way to go Wilcox, you apparently hosed yourself right out of this game with Nick Marshall trying to be Michael Jordan and he’s not that good and this Mohogany kid getting a technical firing up your opponent. Well done, idiots.

Hey…as someone who is not familiar with Single A ball..can a Whitfield fan tell me a little about the b-ball program. Seems as if the school is always a top team in the state. Any D-1 prospects? And where in the world is the school located…LOL!!

All over from Macon - Whitefield advances to the Class A title game with an 87-63 win.

After trailing 33-32 at halftime, the Wolfpack took control in the third quarter (Brandon Reed 13 of his game-high 30 pts in the third) and then held Wilcox to 11 fourth quarter points.

I said it all game but sophomore Nick Marshall had no business running the point for Wilcox County. He’s a shoot-first point guard who can’t really shoot. He had too many turnovers and ill-advised decisions and it cost Wilcox dearly.

Whitefield wasn’t very impressive in the first half, but was very impressive in the second. Brandon Reed is a special player and their bigs controlled the paint for much of the game. I like their chances against Turner in the title game.

That’s all for today from Macon; talk to everyone tomorrow.

Thanks for reading.

Whitefield Academy is a private school located in Cobb County off of South Cobb Drive. When does South Atlanta play, and it is shame how we can’t no coverage of this school and they are ranked in the top 25 in the country..however if it was Pebblebrook, Brookwood…they have the #1 rated player in country in Derrick Favors

“Miller grove wins 83 -69 we beat tucker twice here comes a third one”

Sounds eerily similar to the Tucker/Columbia matchup 2 years. Columbia beat Tucker twice during the regular season, once in OT and once in blowout. Miller Grove has beaten Tucker twice this season, once by 3 and once by 13. Columbia and their fans flooded the message boards, talking a lot of smack and anticipating their coronation with an expected easy win against Tucker. It didn’t happen. The Tigers stepped up, led by then sophomore Manny Atkins’ 20 points, and Tucker pulled out the win, 56-51. Miller Grove is ultra-talented and should win this game, but you never know. Lightning may strike twice.

LOL@ EMACK…you know what, my friend. I have driven past that campus. It’s off S. Cobb, but way off the beaten path, eh? Nice nice campus and big dollar houses around, but one would never be able to guess based off of the neighborhoods you pass to get to it right? Congrads Whifield..another Cobb school on to play for the big rights. Let’s go Wheeler boys and Marietta Girls!

Hey..did you all hear about how the Campbell girls had to walk 5 miles to the game because the bus broke down this past Saturday out at West Ga?

WOWWWWW

miller grove is very good team but the bootleg refs must have been on the same bus with MG.when ufdodo whatever his name is, was gettin calls all night for running over players and pushing off.it’s not gonna be that easy at the next level. move these games so ATL. schools won’t have homecourt advantage every year.

To B Boy: If you think MG is going to have a cakewalk in the state championship against Tucker then you better check your history books! These two teams know each other very well and it will be a great game. It’s hard to beat a team twice let alone 3 times in one year ask the 07 Columbia Eagles. Manny is still at Tucker and he was the MVP of that Championship game 2 yrs ago. Tucker has been there before and has the experience. MG is the better team but as we all know the better team on fri will win this one. If Tucker wiins they have to be the best Athletic program in the STATE!!! Go Tigers
