Southwest Dekalb 57, Northwest Whitfield 49 Girls Final…

Advancing to the final four for the second straight year normally leads to beaming smiles. Not for Southwest Dekalb coach Kathy Walton. Sure she’s happy but still perplexed why her gifted group still hasn’t jelled. But it’s never easy to get a dozen talented players to play as one.

Still the Panthers are here again and may not be finished till the season is over. Junior forward Kayla Lewis is smooth as silk and she’s got plenty of help.

Like the ECI Football team, The ECI Girls Basketball team had to play another AA team (Randoulph-Clay was AA last season). This is not fair to the single A teams who finally have a good season and then you have to play a AA school in the finals. There is no reason and no excuse for this. The number of student in high school should not be a reason to drop down. It should be a 3 year observant time to see if this school should drop down. Most should just stay where they are at. Especailly when you were the state champion last year or the year before or you made the elite eight etc. Lets get it right GHSA. This need to change. I will not attend the state championship games for this reason and I hope other will do the same.

Thank You, The Paying Fans

This is a rather comical scene here. Most of the crowd has gone home, but the few that are here are very vocal. We were treated to a dance-off among fans at halftime. It was serious stuff.

ARC is having success inside, but GA is really packing its zone down low. The Terrors (that’s their nickname) are doing just enough to hang around.

From the Class AAA quarterfinals in Dalton

Carrollton 67, Columbia 65: DALTON - Carollton needed extra time to earn a trip to Macon. The Trojans almost required an entire extra game. Senior forward Janyce Ealey poured in 20 points - eight in the fourth quarter - to lead the Trojans over Columbia 67-65 in double overtime at the Northwest Georgia Trade Center in the quarterfinals of the GHSA Class AAA State Tournament. Karisma Boykins scored 16 points - 10 in the extra minutes - and Kelsi Billings added 10 for Carrollton, who finished as state runner-up in the 2008 Final Four. The Trojans (30-2) will face Rutland March 13 at 4 p.m. at the Macon Centreplex. Eagle junior guard Mecca Frost led her team with 19 points. Jemimah Ashby added 16 points, and Akila McDonald had 10. Columbia finishes the season 22-8.

DALTON - Will Maddox poured in 19 and George Manomano added 17 Saturday night to lead Gainesville into the Class AAA Boys State Tournament Final Four. The Red Elephants (17-8) topped Cedertown 58-46 in the quarterfinals at the Northwest Georgia Trade Center. They took control early nabbing a 13-9 advantage after the first quarter and then 26-22 at the half. Cedertown (21-10) couldn’t march a comeback despite 14 points from both Jordan Price and Brandon Brown. Dwayne Jupiter also had 11 points for the Bulldogs.

Dunwoody is trailing Lakeview-Fort Oglerthrope 29-18 at the half.

The Warriors are rolling behind junior center Jasmain Carey who has 16 first-half points. The Wildcats will need a big adjustment to slow her down.

On a personal note, Dunwoody coach Angela Nash coaches while holding a maroon (red? I’m colorblind) towel. I find this awesome. It’s oldschool. Either that or she sweats a lot. If so, I haven’t noticed that if that is the case. Props, Coach Nash. Props.

Darlington 38, Whitefield 36 at halftime.

Brandon Reid has 18 points for Whitefield. Cole Allen has 14 for Darlington. Allen has made four 3’s. Darlington had the energy early. Whitefield trailed 31-26 and got an ear full from coach Tyrone Johnson about lack of defense. Whitefield responded w/ a 10-2 run, but Darlington retook the lead just before half. It’s been a guard-dominated game. Trey Miller has 11 for WA, and D’s Tyshawn Good has 10.

Norcross 24, Wheeler 18..Halftime….Norcross scored the half’s last 10 points largely due to some surprisingly effective inside play by junior Adrian Hubbard (8 points) against the more-acclaimed Wheeler front line. Norcross’s switch to a zone also perplexed Wheeler. In addition, for some unknown reason Wheeler’s Tahj Tate is not playing and not even on the bench.

Sorry for being slow on Dunwoody girls updates. They have not yet discovered the internet in Dalton. It upsets the carpet-making process.

Final score: LFO 52, Dunwoody 49: Great game. Kristin Nash was clutch but missed the one free throw that mattered. The last one. She drove to the lane looking to cut the Warrior lead to one point with about 6 on the clock. She got fouled then missed the foul shot. I’m sending her an internet hug. She played great and shouldn’t be sad.

I’ll say this for LFO. They need to find a ball handler. Their coach said their region tries what Dunwoody did tonight (heavy pressure) but it doesn’t work. Either way, they’re a feel good story and a nice addition to the Class AAA Final Four. The school had never won a state tournament game prior this season. They drop a classification, but still…good story.

And I think Angela Nash is a good coach and even more pleasant to talk to. Dunwoody has a solid leader there. They lose four seniors, including Nash

Norcross-Wheeler game started late because Campbell’s bus broke down and the Lady Spartans had to walk the final 4 miles to West Georgia’s campus. They probably should have just walked home instead because Parkview beat them so bad, Campbell had more bruises then Rhianna. The broken down bus pushed the Campbell-Parkview game to 4:35, the Milton-South Gwinnett game to 6:15, the Duluth-Marietta game to 7:45 and the Wheeler-Norcross game to 9:15.

I’m sitting at Columbia v. [Doesn’t Matter]. I’m craving a Columbia v. South Atlanta game, so it looks like [Doesn’t Matter] shares my opinion trailing 28-18 at the half.

And yes, Elbert County, I’m kidding. Being stuck in the Carpet Capital of the World makes me rude.

No one for Columbia is blowing up, but the overall athleticism on this team is amazing. I’m going to start counting dunks when they play. I watch them through the Region 5-AAA Tournament and was consistently entertained. Very hard to defend.

Todd: This just in, Wesleyan just nabbed its 1,007th rebound of the night. Anne “MacGyver” Armstrong is just standing under the goal and tipping the ball back to herself. When you’re that good, you can just do whatever you want. No one is likely to stop them in Class A. Anyone have any ideas of who might give them a run in the Final Four?

if tahj tate was in uniform, this game would be much different, he is a huge part of wheelers offense, Ari Stewart and Richard Howell are good, but with out Tahj (or Freeze as he is called) Wheeler loses their penetrator, and a secondary ball handler, and not to mention one of the best finishers in highschool basketball

Wheeler 34, Norcross 33 ….End of 3rd Quarter….Wheeler’s finally finding ways to deal with Norcross’ zone…Offensive rebounds. Junior Joab Jerome has sneaked in for six points. Meanwhile, Wheeler’s Ari Stewart ignited the crowd with a trey and followed that moments later with a traditional 3-point play….

Elbert County had cut the deficit to six points with some good defense. But at the end of the third it’s 39-27 Eagles.

ECHS just whiffed on a last second basket before the buzzer sounded. Not many things going the Blue Devils way.

Look for a Columbia upset over S. Atlanta. Both have tremendous talent but Columbia has a better coach. S. Atlanta will try to press Columbia and they will get burned. Favors will get in foul trouble. Coach Reddick normally chokes during big games

WOW, we now know where all the Bias lies for AJC. Where is the Savannah/Westlake score. Just becuase they don’t have huge followings in Atlanta, they are still in the Elite 8 of AAAAA. Don’t blame them because the GHSA is stupid and sticks all of the “unimportant” games at Fort Valley. Some updates would be nice. And I’m sure people who aren’t fans of the schools would appreciate an update as well, just to know what the heck is going on.

NO LOVE, et al. Well, I agree to a point. But, consider it is called the ATLANTA-Journal Constitution and not the GEORGIA-Journal Constitution. They can’t have their reporters traveling everywhere and giving just do to every team, especially in this economy! But, I will agree that there should be SOMEBODY in Ft. Valley providing information. The only mention of Redan (an Atlanta area school) was when I reported they had won, when I also posted the Newnan (almost Atlanta area) result. (True, I had Valdosta with 76 pts, but I thought the last tip-in had counted.) I, too, would like a Westlake (also almost Atlanta area)-Savannah score.

Wheeler 60, Norcross 44 Final…….Wheeler’s man defense proved to be too much for Norcross as the Blue Devils managed only nine points during the first 11 minutes of the final half. As a result, Wheeler turned a 24-18 deficit into a loud victory.

Wheeler was led by junior guard Phil Taylor’s 17 with 12 of that from the free throw line in the fourth quarter. Senior forwards Richard Howell and Ari Stewart added 13 and 12, respectively.

Norcross was led by junior forward Adrian Hubbard’s 14.

One more point … Georgia is a mostly a football state. The blogs during that season are remarkably fast. Do you notice how many football stories continue to be posted in the AJC months afterwards?! Now, if we were in my home state of Indiana where we bleed basketballs, you would have updates practically before the plays were made! 30 years down here haven’t dimmed my love for the game of roundball, hoops, or whatever you want to call it, for sure. But it sure is disappointing to see mostly empty bleachers during the season, and not even filling for most of the tournaments. And the slow and lacking coverage by most of the media doesn’t help feed my addiction. Still, it is the last week. So, where is the Westlake/Savannah score AJC?!?!?

I’m originally from New York, where everything gets equal coverage, where I could get all the sports that’s fit to print and let me add not only local teams. Football (HS) season has been over for ever and though a little update is good, it’s basketball season guys. AJC didn’t even have the rankings till the last 2 weeks of the season, had to go to another source to get that and even team records. 3 weeks ago when you went to the rankings link you still found the football rankings, give me a break.

Games at West GA were late because Campbell girls’ bus broke down setting every game back …

Wheeler FINALLY focused on DEFENSE and it paid off. Outscored Norcross 42-20 in the second half. First half was spent adjusting for the absence of Tahj Tate … who perhaps forgot the elements of chemistry.

Role player Karl Cochran was the defensive MAN Ari sat out much of the first half due to two quick fouls but made up for it in the second half. Jerome reminded us of Bruce Dalrymple, getting the offensive board put backs. Phil broke Norcross’ back from the free throw line (12 free throws pts). Richard was solid but seemed hurt and/or tired at times.

All and all, Wheeler came out in the second half and said this game is ours … and took it.

GO CATS!

just got back from the game… i tried to provide updates throughout the game but i couldnt get a signal in the gym for my phones internet…anyways heres my take…a tale of 2 halves for the most part, wheeler started quick with a 6-2 lead highlighted by an ari stewart jam right in the faces of the norcross student section….the game then settled down a bit, and norcross took control by out-rebounding the bigger wildcats in the first half, norcross was playing with more intensity in the 1 half, and their smaller guards were finding themselves grabbing rebounds instead of wheelers big men….norcross built a 6 pt lead heading into halftime 24-18…at halftime, wheeler was in the locker room for maybe 2 minutes, but whatever lipscomb said in 2 minutes was obviously the right thing to say, wheeler was back on the court and ready to go…wheeler was ready to inbound the ball with a minute left in the 10 minute break, norcross was still gathering themselves….that small gesture was a forecast of what was to come in the 2nd half, wheeler came out with an unmatched intensity defensively, norcross looked completely bewildered and out of synch with the man2man look from wheeler…cochran, tiller, and jerome played great defense, they were all over the norcross guards the entire 2nd half….as todd wrote, norcross scored only 9 pts the first 11 minutes….ari stewarts 3 pointer with the score tied 31-31 put the wildcats ahead and they never looked back, they built a 10 pt lead towards the end of the 3rd…norcross would cut into the lead with a couple 4-0 runs here and there, but i dont think they got closer than 6 after wheeler built up a cushion…jerome had some nice rebounds and putbacks for wheeler, ari and richard started finishing ( in the first half taylor howell and stewart were shooting abysmally)…wheeler missed 1 free throw the entire game, i dont have the exact stats, but i am imagine they were something like 19/20 from the line while the devils struggled at the line themselves, hitting probably somewhere in the 50-60% range (another guess)…i’m not sure why tate didnt play, but when he is out of the lineup the players are fully aware that other have to step up, and that happened for sure tonight, cochran, tiller, and jerome played great….overall it was a good win, go wildcats!!

I hope Wheeler doesn’t BEACH themselves again this year. The looked past Beach the year Tiller and Florence were Srs.

Surely Lipscomb will remind them!

Westlake is a good team. Milton is a great team … and youngest in the tournament. They start one Sr, 3 sophomores and a freshman! Wheeler did beat Milton earlier this year but Milton has gotten better.

Tournament is not over …

Apparently, Tahj Tate quit the team sometime between the end of Wednesday night’s game with PTR and tonight’s game. That is just bizarre.

As far as the game tonight goes, my hat goes to Joey Jerome. I think he was the real difference. The first half was ugly. Wheeler decided they wanted to win at halftime and came out and took the game.

This is just my opinion, but Norcross just doesn’t seem that good to me. I thought on the whole that Wheeler played a mediocre game, but they did play a gutsy second half.

Ari and Richard are going to have bring considerably more game to TGwC against Westlake.

I just wanted to comment on the Towns County and Wesleyan game from today. I just wanted to know how a team that can beat just about any AAAAA team and was in double AA last year can just drop down to A just like that, and win like 5 titles in 6 years. Everyone gives me this enrollment crap and that is the saddest excuse GHSA could have. Wesleyan can recruit players which totally makes the playing field not fair at all and also showed how little class they have by continuing to full court press our girls while up by 50 points in the 4th quarter. I just feel that GHSA should look at Wesleyan and take a wild guess as to why they can compete and the highest classification but play at the lowest.

I doubt it would do any good but if I were the Campbell girls coach, I would file a protest with the GHSA because of my players having to WALK 4 MILES to the game after their bus broke down. That is absolutely ridiculous! Someone from W. Georgia or the GHSA should have sent a bus to pick them up. I can’t believe they allowed that to happen. Someone should explain from the GHSA. The Campbell girls may not have won but at least they wouldn’t have started off the game tired from their hike to the gym.

And a word to the Milton folks about how they handle the tournament at Gwinnett - if you end up having the late game, you better go ahead and get there early anyway if you want a seat. They do not empty the arena after each game and by the late game seats are a premium. I know you are excited about making it to the finals and will have a lot of fans. Tell them to take cash and get their early.

That is exactly my point I have seen them play and in the big game they are a ONE MAN SHOW. the malone kid goes into hibernation. nice to know you think columbia is overrated they only lost two games and are sitting right next to South atlanta. they are doing something right. they aren’t winning on name alone. so what has south atlanta done so special? yall are the ones with everything to lose. yall are the ones with the number one player in the country, the high national ranking. yall are the ones that have to prove yall belong. we been there. this is home for us. columbia just shows up and plays ball. the one man show can only carry you so far….see vincent banks (remember they ran into a TEAM named griffin)?

Todd, can you find out any more about Tahj Tate? William mentioned a rumor (or maybe he knows firsthand) that Tate quit the team. That seems—-bizarre. More likely scenario may be that Coach Lipscomb kicked him off the team.

Having said all that, it’s obvious that not having Tate on the floor didn’t hurt Wheeler all that much, and in the end, may have helped them. If the team and Tate have cut ties, that may eliminate what seems to have been a distraction; maybe not a major distraction but this time of year, you don’t need any distractions at all.

Both of my kids graduated from Wheeler and I went to a lot of Wheeler’s games during that time. I still think the 2005 team was the best of the lot—-they flat wore their opponents out and dominated with intensity and desire, both of which seem to come to this year’s version in spurts, at best.

And I heartily agree with WilcatMan—-don’t get Beached this year. I was at that game and it was painfully obvious from the opening tipoff that Wheeler had looked past Beach.

Go Wildcats!!

By William

March 8, 2009 1:33 PM | Link to this

Lipscomb was quoted in today’s MDJ that Tahj didn’t play due to “personal reasons”. My understanding from several sources is that he quit the team and left for his original hometown of Easley, S.C. where his mom still lives. Two sources told me that he quit Wednesday night. That’s the entirety of what I’ve been told. I sincerely hope Tahj is able to sort things out. He’s a quiet kid who mishandled some challenges this year. He’s not a bad kid and I hope he overcomes things and stays that way.

Thanks, William, for the update. I hope the young man can get things straightened out, too. You hate to see potential wasted, in whatever walk of life.

Sidenote: I was pleased to see David Gonzalvez had ended up at Richmond. I had lost track of him after he had failed to qualify academically coming out of Wheeler (I think he had signed originally with Coastal Carolina).

Sharaud and J.T. have been having great seasons. I was really pleased to see J.T. able to follow Coach Anderson to Missouri. That style of ball is perfect for him.

Congratulations to all of the Final Four qualifiers.

Hey Sallie!

High 5 to you!! The Fab 5 Seniors had a fantastic career and all of the supporting cast from the underclassmen. What most people don’t know is that the current 8th grade class of Lady Cats made a run for the Middle School Girls title, falling just a tad short to Dacula on Saturday morning. The Duluth Legacy started by Mykala/Daphne/Alex P/Ravven and Alex Shaw will be carried on by Juniors, Dominique, Shyla and Roxie; and Sophomores, Aliyah and Tarlesha and Freshmen, yes Freshmen, Rajine and Abby. Coming soon, Joy, Ariel and Merideth from the 8th grade!

Most people don’t know that, before the reign of the Fab 5, the Duluth Lady Cats won 0 games in the season before they came in as freshmen, 1 game in the year before that and 2 games in the year before that! The freshman year was a 9-17 season, then 17-9, then Final Four, then Elite 8!

They have truly made history and they are all smart girls to boot!

VCU, Wake and Mercer have a lot to look forward to!

We love you ladies and thanks for putting Duluth Lady Cats on the map. An Elite 8 finish in your senior year and a Final Four finish in your Junior year, and 3 D1 signees … UNBELIEVABLE!

Thanks Coach Huckaby, Coach Gaskins and Coach Gilbert! You have been a rock and we love you all!!
