Georgia High School Basketball State Tournament Blog
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
It’s not even March, but the madness has already begun across Georgia.
The state basketball tournament tipped off this weekend. Here’s where our reporters were Saturday night.
• Chris Whitfield — Harrison-Wheeler
• Michael Alpert — North Cobb-Centennial
• Todd Holcomb — Milton-Marietta (Coach Hood’s final tourney)
• Rob Morton — Walton-McEachern.
Check out their updates below.
Here’s their game stories too:
• Centennial pulls away from North Cobb
• Wheeler cruises past Harrison
We had two photographers at games as well. Check out their best shots here.
But if we’re not at your game of interest, help us all out by posting your scores, highlights and reactions for all of Saturday’s first-round showdowns right here at State Tournament Central.
We appreciate it, and your fellow fans who couldn’t be at the game do too.

Good story line at the Marietta-Milton game tonight. ..
Marietta’s Charlie Hood and Milton’s David Boyd have over 1,200 victories. Hood (715 wins) won state titles at Marietta in 1983 and 1999. Boyd won titles at Campbell (1982), Tucker (1995?) and Berkmar (2000 and 2001). Boyd (511 wins) is the only coach in state history to win boys state titles at three schools.
Further, Hood has announced his retirement, so it could be his final game after 40 seasons at Marietta, the last 37 as head coach. It’s his 20th state tournament.

Funny, you don’t get halfway down the stairs of the empty stands before Centennial boys coach Allen Whitehart senses the intruder during ultra-early workouts, stops mid-sentence, spins about, and asks “Hi, can I help you?”
long before visiting North Cobb has arrived, before any fans, even before cashiers are stationed at the arena door. Only once he finds out with a handshake that you’re a friend, a reporter from the AJC, are you invited to set up shop nearby.
typical? Yes, whenever there’s no girls game ahead of time, Whitehart said. “We let our guys get shots up and go through the walk-through, then we’ll watch film for about 45 minutes, then get dressed,” he explained.
and his Knights now tucked safely in the locker room, it’s eerily quiet with only a half dozen guys shooting neighborhood HORSE on the floor.

Forgive North Cobb’s boys for taking a grudge into tonight’s 7 p.m. game against host Centennial. The Warriors probably haven’t forgotten being within only a point of the Knights after three quarters the last time the teams played in the second round of state in 2007 in Macon, only to wind up being eliminated 78-61. That was the night neither Evan Snelling’s 20 points nor Matt Roark’s 14 for the Warriors could stop the Knights from outscoring them by 18 in the final period.
so we’ll see how big the chips on players’ shoulders are.

Free throws typically are difficult enough as shooters face fan sections behind the basket. Here at Centennial there’s an extra challenge tonight, a guy dressed as a bright yellow banana slightly left of the hoop.
Like me, the spectacle got the best of the official scorer. When she asked the guy, yes he confirmed being dressed as a banana. She said when she asked him why, he had no particular reason, saying, “Because I can.”
Jeez, guess unless he moves, both teams will take turns being distracted by him.

Milton 23, Marietta 17, end of 1Q.
Dai-Jon Parker 7 points, Evan Nolte 6 for Milton.
Kelsey Bedford, Marietta’s only starter taller than 6-foot, has 4 points. He’s 6-3, btw.
Marietta playing w/ lots of energy, but Milton is more talented. Just thought I’d master the obvious.

North Cobb leads Centennial 19-15 after a quarter. Things might have been closer, had not Ryan Fleming’s fast-break layup attempt with a second left not been batted away authoritatively near the rim by Slotter, bringing visiting fans to their feet.

Milton 42, Marietta 26, haltime.
Erik Shuelke hit a 3-pointer - and was fouled - with 0:00.9 left in the half. He made the FT.
Marietta can’t score inside. Too small. It’s going to take some 3’s, and their not dropping. Chad Lang, a 6-10 guy off the bench, gave Marietta some good defense, blocking 3 shots, but is no real threat inside.
Milton has so many weapons inside and out. Dai-Jon Royal has scored 10 points. Evan Nolte (sorry I wrote Connor earlier) has 10. Both have a pair of 3’s. Scott has 8. Royal has only 4. Just playing good D.

Centennial led North Cobb 33-25, but if you blinked, you might have missed North’s Markel Gregoire bucketing a three-pointer, then stealing Centennial’s ensuing inbounds pass and cashing in another two just three seconds later, 40 ticks before intermission. That closed the half 33-30 Centennial. Down three is a lot better than five.

Preview of the McEachern-Walton boys game soon to tip
McEachern (24-3) enters as Region 5-AAAAA top seed, ranked No. 1 by the Georgia Prep Sports Writers Association and No. 13 in ESPN’s Southeast region.
The Indians are riding a 12-game winning streak. McEachern was in the state tournament last year and lost to Wheeler in the second round.
Walton (18-9) is Region 6-AAAAA’s No. 4 seed and honorable mention in GPSWA. This is the Raiders’ first appearance in the state tournament since 1998.
The game pits Walton’s perimeter skills of Georgia Tech bound Glenn Rice Jr. and Ryan Harrow versus McEachern’s imposing front line of 6-8 Kadeem Batts (Providence) and 6-9 Colin Reddick (Furman).
In addition, two of the state’s top juniors will collide with Walton’s Harrow (a N.C. State commitment) and McEachern guard Trae Golden.
The winner plays the survivor of tonight’s Norcross-Meadowcreek game.

Geta loda this: Centennial held a first-ever sushi eating contest at halftime. Centennial science teacher Brian Heglund downed eight California rolls in a minute, beating six and five by two other contestants. Though never in any eating contest before, Heglund said he might enter more. He explained he’d been told that keeping your throat lubricated would be key, but the rice being sticky made that tough.
Funny, though, how winning a $40 dinner certificate to Aqua Blue makes one a comedian. When asked about winning, Heglund said, “It sounded fishy to me, but they said I won,” Then without losing a beat, he added, “Once I got going, I was on a California roll.”

Wheeler takes a 41-28 lead at the half with a balance of Richard Howell and Ari Stewart. Howell worked the inside-out game pretty well in the first quarter and Stewart took over in the second quarter after Howell picked up his second foul.
Only thing keeping it close for Harrison is Casey Belli doing his best Jimmy Chitwood impersonation on the perimeter with four of Harrison’s six 3-pointers. (And I intend to have as many Hoosiers references as possible over the course of the state playoffs so don’t get caught watching the paint dry.)
Wheeler really has too much. I expect Harrison to hang around for the first half of the third quarter and then for Wheeler’s talent to take over. First time I have seen Howell, but he reminds me a lot of Dontonio Wingfield. Maybe not as thick, but he definitely has that inside-outside game that Wingfield worked to perfection in high school.

We’re in the final minutes o Coach Charlie Hood’s career. Milton leads 66-44 w/ 6:50 left. Dai-Jon Parker leads Marietta, his former school, w/ 18 points. It’s getting a litle rowdy late as Evan Nolte got knocked to the floor hard and screaming there wasn’t a foul.
For Hood, I’m wondering if his 20 trips to the state tournament is the most for a boys coach in the highest class. Don Richardson at SW Macon had 18.

Walton 44, McEachern 30 Half……Walton’s duo of Rice and Harrow have ruled matters while McEachern’s sloppy ball handling have been a key as well. Walton’s 20-4 run in the second quarter may be the story of the game with Walton seeking its first state playoff win since 1998.

Centennial coach Allen Whitehart was talkative after his Knights edged North Cobb 66-49 to reach Wednesday’s second round of the Class AAAAA playoffs, against South Gwinnett.
On North Carolina State signee Lorenzo Brown’s game-high 19 points: “His leadership on the court really helps us. He doesn’t care whether he scores three or 30. He just wants a win for us as a team.”
On trailing by six in the first quarter and not taking the lead for good until Brown’s short jumper made it 26-25 3:33 before intermission: “We knew (North Cobb) was going to zone us, and we had to settle in. Once we dictated what we wanted to, we were OK.”

Just got a call from Cass. Apparently, Cass went to a full-court defense in the fourth and turned it around. Tarris Batiste hit a 3 w/ 8 seconds left to tie it 77-77 in regulation. Cass got up 75-71 and held on in OT.
Loganville, the Region 8-AAAA champ, went up 23-2 in the first 6 minutes.

Region 6 had 5 teams in coach’s top 10 … only four went to state. All Region 6 move to round two.
Only one top team team (Valdosta #4) is in the top two brackets.

WALTON BEAT MCEACHERN WITH GOOD OLE FASHIONED—GAME TIME!!
WHEN GLEN RICE CAME OUT AND GREETED THE CROWD WITH A MONSTER DUNK IN THE VERY FIRST PLAY OF THE GAME, THE RAIDERS NEVER LOOKED BACK!! I AM SURE IT WAS A HUMBLING EXPERIENCE FOR THE INDIANS…..
GLEN RICE HITTING TREYS FROM ALMOST HALF COURT—- MAKES YA WANNA HOLLA—THROW UP BOTH YA HANDS—-:)
TRE WHO? NUMBER ONE GUARD IN THE STATE……HMMMM I DONT THINK SO….RYAN HARROW SHOWED EVERYONE IN THE BUILDING WHY NC STATE SIGNED HIM LAST YEAR AS A SOPHOMORE….33 EFFORTLESSLY DELIVERED POINTS…….AT 5 FOOT 11—-
ALL GERALD WILLIAMS AND GLEN RICE NEED TO DO IS REMEMBER TO GIVE THE BALL TO THEIR POINT GUARD HARROW EVERY TIME AND IT WILL BE LIGHTS OUT FOR NORCROSS AS WELL….
SEE YOU WED

OOO-the expressions of the Mceachern team—as they saw their playoff hopes going bye-bye…..Priceless!!
I agree give Ryan the ball! This frees Glen to do what he does best—penetrate, hit those cash money three pointers and DUNK!!
Gerald kept us in the game with his treys—-and Michael Story—with 10 points off the bench in the last half——Thank you Mr. Story!
Hey, this game was well worth the ten dollar price tag! Thank you fellas!

BUT THE KEY TO THIS TEAM BELONGS TO RYAN, AND GLEN.JR. WHAT AN INCREDIBLE GAME FOR THEM!! WHEN GLEN JR,GOES COAST TO COAST,I SAY (DONT GET YOUR WRIST BROKE)HE WILL MAKE YOU HIS POSTER BOY!!
BUT BACK TO RYAN,HE IS DIVISION 1 READY RIGHT NOW,(ONE YEAR IN COLLEGE,ONE YEAR OUT STRAIGHT TO THE PROS)
LET IT DO WHAT IT DO GENTLEMEN—
WALTON WILL DEFEAT NORCROSS ON WED

i dont even think of Harrow as a point guard, his handles are not good enough to run the point at the next level
and he is no way better than Shuraud Curry, the 5’8” point guard who played for Wheeler in 2005, that guy could handle the ball, pass, and shoot it better than anyone. He was the best point guard under 6 feet

Hey,
high school fan—where is Shuraud Curry now? He was impressive a Wheeler…..then I think he simply evaporated—-just looked for him on line—Nothing!! Where is he now—let me know?
Harrow is a true point guard in the best sense of the word. He can handle the ball like a pro, pass, shoot and reads the floor like a 4-star General. He and Glen Rice were the Two Horseman on their lil’ parade. Sorry, give Ryan Harrow his due!

WELL LET ME CLEAR MY THROAT——HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL FAN……
WHERE WOULD RYAN BE WITHOUT HIS HANDLES,DO YOU KNOW BASKETBALL, AT ALL? ARE YOU ROOTING FOR THE UNDERDOG,SHURAD CURRY?WHERE ARE HIS SUPERSTAR STATS—-ILL TAKE MINI STELLAR STATS AT THIS POINT—-HE HAS PROVEN TO BE JUST A LIL BETTER THAN AVERAGE—SORRY I THINK HIS GAME HAS BEEN EXPOSED IN COLLEGE—LET ME KNOW! ANYWAY WE ARE HERE TO DISCUSS A SQUAD THAT IS RELEVANT IN 2008-2009—-THE WALTON RAIDERS
HEAR ME ON THIS!!!
WHEN YOU HAVE A GUARD REGARDLESS OF THE TITLE SHOOTING GUARD OR POINT GUARD THEY MUST DELIVER, RYAN DELIVERS!!
RYAN IS NOT THE STAR OF THIS SQUAD,THAT TITLE GOES TO GLEN JUNIOR—BUT RYAN HARROW KNOWS HOW TO HANDLE THE MOMENTUM OF HIS TEAM AND THE OPPONENT. DO NOT UNDERESTIMATE HIM-THAT IS WHAT HAPPENED TO MCEACHERN-AND THEY ARE NOW ELIMINATED!
AGAIN, RYAN HARROW IS THE BEST POINT GUARD I HAVE EVER SEEN UNDER 6 FEET. I PLAYED BALL WITH SOME OF THE BEST IN THE GAME-TREVOR ARIZA, BOBBY BROWN,AMIR JOHNSON-THESE GUYS ARE IN THE LEAGUE NOW—
THEY WOULD LOVE TO HAVE HIM,AND ANY NCAA PROGRAM AS WELL. YOU AND I BOTH KNOW N C STATE WILL BE BLESSED WITH THIS TALENT!
HE IS UNDERSIZED,UNDERWEIGHT,AND UNDER A BONAFIDE SUPERSTAR . HARROW’S 33 POINTS 10 ASSIST 5 REBOUNDS YOU DO THE MATH!! HE IS BETTER THEN JORDAN FARMER OF THE LAKERS,AND COULD BE AS GOOD AS CP3 IF HE PUTS ON A FEW POUNDS!!
HE IS NOT A SHOOTER,BUT CAN BE!!HE IS NOT A POINT GUARD,BUT HE CAN BE!!!CHECK HIS STATS,-COME SITDOWN AND ENJOY THE RYAN HARROW SHOW NEXT WEEK, WATCH HIS HANDLES CLOSELY, CAUSE HE MOVES FAST AND YOU MIGHT MISS SOMETHING. WHEN HE PLAYS AGAINST NORCROSS,IF YOU NOT A BELIEVER LIKE ME,YOU WILL BE!!,RYAN IS GOING PRO IN LESS THEN 4 YEARS!!
IF YOU ARE NOT A BELIEVER NOW,WAIT UNTIL NEXT YEAR WHEN HE IS A WALTON SENIOR—OOOO BOY, I CANT WAIT!!
NORCROSS HOLD UNTO YOUR HAT—IT IS GOING TO BE A VERY BUMPY RIDE!

Holy Moly! What a game, I’m not a homer, but I’ve got to give the Walton Raiders thier due…..the two best games this year that I have seen have both involved Walton (including drubbing McEachern Saturday — the game was really not that close, McEach was playing from 15 points behind most of the way). I agree that the team, and esp glen Rice Jr can be overly emotional, and even classles sometimes. But that being said, they stand up and deliver when its crunch time. Tip off Sat. night, Glenn Jr gets the ball and goes to the rim for a thuhndering two handed dunk…on the tip off! He set the tone for the game right there, and Walton didn’t look back. I hadn’t seen that look of anziety/shock on the McEach players all year. McEachern pretty much dominated their region. I saw 5 or 6 of their games, no one pushed or challenged them. It makes you wonder about the strength of the other 5-A divisions relattive to the 6 5-A schools. Milton takes out Marietta. Collins Hill (who beat Norcross in the regions) looses in first round to Central Gwinnett. McEachern (everybody’s favorite to win out second only to Wheeler) looses to Walton. All three of these 6 5-A teams won ON THE ROAD against higher ranked opponents….watch out Norcross, read between the lines here. Milton, Walton, Centennial, and Wheeler beat up on each other throughout the season and are battle tested and experienced. To take any of them lightly is to make a huge mistake, right, Trae Golden?

Ryan Harrow will not be one and done because he is too small to play in the pros in terms of height and bulk.
Sharaud Curry has 3 things that Harrow doesn’t- State championship rings. Sharaud Curry has had a fine career so far for Providence- a team that will probably make the NCAA tournament. Sharaud Curry has played great- just ask then No 1. Pittsburgh.
Harrow might make a decent college player but in the end he isn’t as good of a POINT GUARD as Sharaud was or is. Harrow needs to hit the weights before he is ever considered a real pro prospect.
Walton fans quit typing in ALL CAPS please because its annoying as hell to read.

Just reading further up, Willy, you’re right, Trae G. had the better stats point wise in that game (35 to 33), but Trae had a ‘quiet’ 35 points (if there is such a thing). That is to say, his points didn’t seem to come when they were most needed or at key times in the game. I’m not slamming Trae, he’s a great player for sure. But he did have alot of turnovers, and he wasn’t able to quell the momentum, get his other guys involved, nor stop his opponent. McEachern had all the hieght inside and the home court advantage and still got nearly blown out. it jsut seems that Harrow’s baskets came at key times and meant more. Harrow is a phenomenal talent, but i’m not sure how well his game will translate to the next level because of his lack of size. But he’s sure fun to watch now.

— but they beat Norcross when it counted. You made my point exactly.

I’m not saying Norcross will loose to Walton, home cooking at Norcross goes a long way i.e. shameful non-call clobbering of JJ Hickson at games end two years ago at Norcross that justifiably would have nixed one of those state title runs. But I am saying that anything is possible….let’s wait and see.

Well, it was a well played game by Norcross. they dererved the win. I think Walton could have taken it, but they turned the ball over too many times, missed too many free throws, and D’Mitri was/is lost. Glen jr and Harrow were very good (as usual), but they got absolutely no help. Congrats to Norcross, that Denzail Jones is pretty darn good.
