Norcross Mom,
Notice that all 4 Region 6 teams (Walton, Wheeler, Milton and Centennial) have live coverage by the AJC on Saturday night. What are your thoughts on that?

Apparently, the AJC considers Region 6 a “better region” that Region 7. Granted those are some great teams and the games should be great and Norcross does not have the Division 1 college players it has had in past years and the AJC has been “naysayers” of this years Blue Devils Boys BUT Region 6 has not won the State championship 3 years in a row. What can I say….I love my Blue Devils!

[AJC’s Glenn LaFollette at Mays hosting Miller Grove]
We’re all set at Benjamin E. Mays High School for the state opening round playoff between the Lady Raiders and Miller Grove. Tip is set for 6:30 p.m., and it’s very apparent that the rain is keeping people away. I have an entire section to myself, but I’ll be moving down to the scorer’s table for the game action. The front-row seating is a rarity in sports writing. Usually I’m stuck in a corner between a police officer and someone’s mom who just doesn’t think Junior is getting enough playing time.
Quick facts: Miller Grove (13-8) is the No. 3 seed from Region 6-AAAA, while Mays (25-2) is the No. 2 seed from Region 5-AAAA. This is actually the Wolverines first trip to the state tournement. The school opened play in 2005 and has a 50-51 record since. The Raiders only have two losses but to only one team: undefeated and top-ranked Fayette County.

Mays coach Natasha Harrigan and staff are sporting pink t-shirts to throw off the referees and blend into the walls. Actually, they’re just supporting the Live Pink campaign for breast cancer awareness and research. I’ve always thought his was a wonderful campaign, and quite frankly cool when college or professional teams sport pink uniforms during games. I think the NFL should think about this. Ray Lewis in a pink uniform would please millions.

Miller Grove has not come in intimated. The Hugh Jackmans took an early 4-0 lead on aggressive penetration from guards Conisha Hicks and Ameila Dorton, who will prove to be a handful all night. But Mays plays some of the best defense in the state, transition and half-court. It’s 6-3 at the 4:18 mark and getting sloppy. That’s an advantage for Mays.
By Glenn LaFollette
February 27, 2009 6:52 PM | Link to this
Home cooking or just sloppy play? At the conclusion of the first quarter, it’s Miller Grove 10-6. The Wolverines have eight fouls to just two for Mays. Hicks and Dorton both have four points apiece, and are fun to watch in transition. Trips to the foul line haven’t helped Mays gain control. The Raiders are just 2-for-7 from the line. Not a good start for a team looking to go much, much further in the state tournament.

Pretty run of the mill game in the first half. What you’d expect, with Milton, No. 1 seed leading 40-26, largely because they have the biggest person in the gym at center - senior Tori Waldner (6-foot-5). She had 13 at the break.
But North Cobb has come out ON FIRE. Started the second half with a 9-0 run. Guard Diamond Henderson hit two threes. They’ve closed the gap to 49-42 early in the third quarter.

52-48 now. North Cobb has turned up the intensity. They’re more athletic and are trying to use that to their advantage. It’s starting to frustrate Milton.
With the pressure North Cobb is applying, Milton can’t get into its half-court offense to get the ball inside to Tori Waldner. Milton has just gone into it’s four-corner offense. I think that’s a MISTAKE! We’ll see.

I’m not one to criticize the hardworking men in zebra stripes. But if I was going to question the officials at this game, which I’m not, I might say the following: throwing another person to the ground is usually considered a foul. This is about as physical as a state tournament game should be, I suppose. With 2:21 to go, Miller Grove leads 20-14. Mays severely needs a three-pointer to fall to break up the Wolverine zone.
By S. Thomas Coleman
February 27, 2009 7:10 PM | Link to this
Start of the fourth quarter, Milton up 52-48. North Cobb outscored Milton (they’re both the Eagles) 22-12 in the third quarter.
Uh-oh. Jillian Winston just hit a three for North Cobb. It’s 54-51. Milton’s still in the four corners. Senior guard Danielle Pasquerello seems to be their best ball handler.
By S. Thomas Coleman

Two big buckets by Milton to push their lead to 58-53 with four minutes left. Senior guard Kris King just took a nice charge on Diamond Henderson, who is just a junior.
This has turned into a great game! Just what high school basketball - girls or boys - is all about to me!

Here at Fayette County, Tucker’s size is giving Fayette trouble in the early going, particularly Shamesia Bennett, who has eight points through the first seven minutes.

60-55, Milton, after a bucket by North Cobb’s Diamond Henderson. She’s single-handedly keeping North Cobb close.
Milton is still in its stall. It doesn’t look pretty, but they’re keeping the ball away from North Cobb. North Cobb might run out of time. Just 1:36 left, with Milton up, 60-55.

Halftime: Miller Grove 22, Mays 15
Thoughts from the first half: Mays has been outplayed on both ends of the court, but the Raiders defense is keeping them afloat. They need to start making foul shots and at least one trey wouldn’t kill them. Mays is only 6-for-13 from the charity stripe, while the Wolverines are 6-for-10.
Also, I’m convinced Miller Grove junior guard Conisha Hicks could take me. That’s 5-foot-11, 225 pounds (me) vs. 5-foot-4 and a buck oh nine, maybe. She’s amazingly quick and tough. I had never heard of her until tonight. You’ll be heard a lot from her next season. She’s got 10 points in the first half, and she’s giving Mays fits the way senior point guard Tessah Holt of Fayette County did.
It’s a scrappy game, and it could just as easily be found on an asphalt court somewhere. My personal highlight was Mays freshman Mariah Dean executing a perfect box out at the end of the second quarter. The Raiders need more like, and when I played, boxing out was about the only thing I could do correctly. I was the Dennis Rodman of YMCA youth league hoops.

Wow. North Cobb’s coach just picked up a tech with :56 left, score still 60-55. Milton has missed three free throws in a row. North Cobb coach thought his player got fouled on a drive to the bucket.
Senior guard Kim Spaid just hit two free throws for Milton. They’re up 62-55 with :49. I think they’ll hold on.

Mays has give up on man-to-man and found new life in zone. It’s 22-21, Miller Grove. Mays first four possessions of the second half: layup, layup, missed shot, jumper. Miller Grove’s: turnover, missed shot, missed shot, turnover.

65-60, Milton, with :25 left.
Diamond Henderson just fouled out, so I think that’s it for North Cobb. But little Maggie Tremble hit a three for North Cobb after Milton converted 1 of 2 free throws.
Lauren Nolte just hit 1 of 2 for Milton, so now its 66-60. North Cobb just missed on its possession, and had to foul Kim Spaid. Just :06 left now. This one’s over. Spaid just hit another free throw. 67-60 is the final.

Mays junior Larrisa Carter tied the game at 25-all, but then Miller Grove answered back with a pair of trips to the foul line. The score is 27-25 at the 1:34 mark in the third. We’re finally seeing some back and forth, but both teams could use some time practicing foul shots. I could be missing the fact that being thrown to the ground might have some affect on one’s ability to hit free throws.

This hasn’t been Fayette’s best game, but if they’re the best team in the state then Tucker doesn’t look anything like a 13-14 No. 4 seed. It’s 25-24 at the half mainly because of tucker’s frontcourt. Halftime adjustments — Fayette needs to figure out a way to deny Bennett (14 points) the ball inside.

The final two minutes of this quarter have been epic. The crowd finally showed up and so did Kendra Long, who gave Mays its first lead at 28-27 with a drive. Jaleah Holsey followed that immediately with a steal and score for a 30-27 count. That’s our score at the end of the third quarter.

Kendra Long just nailed a corner 3-pointer to start the fourth. Miller Grove just took a timeout down 33-27. This is gripping stuff, but I’m just jealous I didn’t get pre-game chicken like Kurt. I’d kill a man for a turkey sandwich right now.

Six straight points for Larrisa Carter – one on an impressive assist by Long – and Mays built a 41-31- lead. They’re pulling away. The score is 41-32 with 4:24 to go. This is how a championship team plays defense. Long seems to be make a world of difference for the Raiders on offense. She scored her 1,000th career point earlier this season against Sandy Creek (Jan. 20), so I’d say it’s safe to say she knows how to score the ball. Now, I’m going to get that sandwich.

Chattahoochee with a late, 5-0 run to take a surprising 11-10 lead after one quarter. Cougars sophomore guard Erika Ford was 4-of-6 from the field for nine of Chattahoochee’s points.

Megan Barnidge leads the Panthers with six points.

Bennett just picked up her third foul with 1:20 left in the third period; Fayette has done a better job denying the inside pass, mainly by not allowing Tucker to set up its half-court offense, and Welch has asserted herself over the last half of the third period, compiling four points, two assists, a steal and a reabound in a span of just over a minute. It’s 41-36 Fayette heading into the fourth.

Scene of the night: Mays forward Benee Norton found herself completely open for a layup and 48-40 lead with a minute to go thanks to Miller Grove’s aggressive pressure. The senior dropped the ball in just as the entire Wolverine squad came running up. Victory is now a lock for Mays. They’ll be moving on to the second round, likely traveling to Northwest Whitfield. The Bruins are the No. 1 seed in Region 7-AAAA.

FINAL: Mays 54-42
Miller Grove falls to 13-9 and will graduate seven seniors. They’ll return Hicks, so look for them to remain competitive. Hicks had 14 points on the night, 10 coming in the first half. Senior guard Ameila Dorton added 16 to lead all scorers.
Mays was led by Larrisa Carter who got hot in the second half with 14 points, and Qouston Crawley added 16. We still feel like the Raiders are a darkhorse Final Four team, but they’ll have to get Kendra Long involved more, hit some free throws and control the tempo on defense (as they like to do) much, much more.
UPDATE: I found a slice a pizza. It’s not a turkey sandwich, but I’ll settle for this. Kurt wins this battle.

Parkview began playing like a 27-1 team and completely dominated the second quarter.
The Panthers out-scored visiting Chattahoochee, Region 7’s No. 4 seed, 12-2 in the second, getting four points from Morgan Mitchell in the quarter. Mitchell and Megan Barnidge each had six points in the first half to pace the Region 8 champs.
Meanwhile, Chattahoochee got one basket in the second quarter, a 15-foot jumper from sophomore guard Hollyn Phelps, and seemed to rely too much on Erika Ford. Ford is a talented player, but without any help, Chattahoochee could be in for a long second half.

OK, Milton held on to win, 67-60. Kim Spaid led Milton with 22 points. North Cobb was led by Diamond Henderson with 20.
Here’s how the rest of the scoring breaks down: Milton (22-7): Danielle Pasquerello, 3; Lauren Nolte, 6; Rachelle Barnes, 6; Kris King, 15; Tori Waldner, 15.
North Cobb (21-8): Maggie Trimble, 3; Jarae Savage, 7; Jillian Winston, 11; Kira Gordon, 8; Morgan Graham, 4; Ashley Grimes, 3; Sandy Almon, 4.
I believe I said Milton was a No. 1 seed. That’s incorrect. They’re the No. 2 from Region 6AAAAA (Roswell beat them in the region tourney final, 63-62, in OT). Sorry about that error, Roswell!
Also, Milton’s big 6-foot-5 post player (her dad is 6-foot-7), Tori Waldner, is a SOPHOMORE, not a senior!! (According to her mom, who I just met, Tori has a bad chest cold. She still had 12 rebounds to go with her 15 points, and a key block against Diamond Henderson with under a minute to play). They’ll get out the vaporizer over the next couple of days to get her right for the second round, March 3, when Milton plays the winner of Parkview vs. Chattahoochee.
That’s the good and the bad thing about blogging! I would have had time to check these errors, had I been writing the usual game story (a gamer, as we call it in the biz!!). But when you’re going “live” it’s different. More fun, I think. I’ll do better next time!
This was my first time seeing both teams. North Cobb didn’t play with enough intensity in the first half, and it cost them. Once they came out in attack mode in the second half, it was a different game. They should be pretty good next season, though. Diamond Henderson was the most electric player on the floor and she’ll be back, as will five of the eight players who logged the most minutes, including Kira Gordon, who is just a freshman (and she’s 6-feet tall, good grief!!).
Milton has good size. Its only starter UNDER 5-foot-10 is senior guard Danielle Pasquerello (5-foot-3). But I can see a quick, athletic team giving them problems, as North Cobb did in the second half.
Kim Spaid (a senior) and Kris King (a junior) are two big guards (5-foot-10 and 6-feet, respectively), who can see over traps and they are decent ball handlers. If they can make any game they play a half-court game, with the ability to pound it inside to Tori Waldner, they have a shot. If not, see ya!
That’s it from Milton. Again, it was Milton 67, North Cobb 60. I’m the last one in the gym (aside for this poor guy who has lost his keys!!) with a long ride to S. Fulton County ahead of me, in the rain. See you next week. Feel free to holler at me at scoleman@ajc.com.
And one more thing: send me any and all track and field information that you have. The spring sports season is here!

Preview of tonight’s boys’ game of Stone Mountain at Fayette County
Region 5-AAAA champion Fayette County enters the game 20-7 overall, 19-1 versus teams from Georgia, ranked No. 5 in AAAA by the Georgia Prep Sports Writers Association and riding a 13-game winning streak. The Tigers were state runner ups last season.
Stone Mountain is Region 6-AAAA No. 4 seed, stands 12-14 overall, has lost four of its last five games with its lone win over then No. 3 Chamblee that put the Pirates into the state tournament. Stone Mountain reached the second round of the state tournament last year.
The key aspect of the game is Fayette’s best player in Southern Cal bound Noel Johnson will not play tonight due to a freak cut he suffered to his non-shooting hand at last weekend’s region championship game. He may be to return to the Tuesday’s quarterfinals should the Tigers advance.

Chattahoochee having all kinds of shooting problems, but Parkview not exactly running away with this one.
I’m really enjoying watching Parkview senior center Megan Barnidge play. Excellent rebounding skills; can score when you need a basket and one of the better passing post players I’ve seen in girl’s basketball.
Panthers ahead 30-17 after three quarters.

FINAL: Norcross girls 62, Central Gwinnett 53. The AJC’s postgame report … Norcross plays Marietta in the second round on Tuesday TBA.
NORCROSS coach ANGIE HEMBREE: “I thought our kids played pretty hard, Central Gwinnett came out with a game plan and executed it very well. In the second half, we got the ball inside like we wanted to. We got some good ‘inside out’ baskets, some transition baskets. I think our defense has got to improve. But other than that, I’ve very happy with the way we played.”

Norcross is in the state playoffs for the first time since 1999. Norcross coach Angie Hembree gave her assessment of the postseason debut by the Blue Devils.
“You’re talking about a group of kids that have never been to the playoffs. You want every game to be as normal as you can, but you can’t escape the fact you’re in the state tournament. These kids are getting used to that type of pressure, used to those type of expectations. It’s a good thing. It’s a good thing for them, our school and our community.

Fayette County 38, Stone Mountain 25…Halftime….A dominating Fayette second quarter as the Tigers zone gambling defense ruled the moment. Stone Mtn. goes without a made field goal over a seven-minute stretch.
Senior sub Trevor McGill provided the highlight with a nice dunk off an opponent’s missed shot.
Senior guard Cody Simmons leads Fayette with 8 points. Sophomores Malcolm Brogdon and Maurice Williams, along with McGill added with 7 apiece.
Stone Mtn paced by senior Kinley Branch’s 13.

Fayette was led by sophomore Malcolm Brogdon’s 19 and senior Cody Simmons’ 15. Sophomores Maurice Williams and Adam Smith added 13 and 12, respectively.
Stone Mountain was led by senior Kinley Branch’s 24.
A good win for the Tigers - especially considering their best player in Noel Johnson did not play due to injury.

Don’t you just love the “South Georgia” bracket?
Here’s what a few girls’ teams have to do next week:
Mitchell County goes to Laney (201 miles) Brooks County goes to Greene County (193 miles) Harlem goes to Bainbridge (218 miles) Brunswick goes to Jonesboro (235 miles) Camden County goes to Redan (255 miles) Luella goes to Bradwell Institute (183 miles) Douglass goes to Beach (228 miles)
I know there is no other way to delegate regions in some classifications, but it’s still a sight to see.
I hope Norcross leaves early for that long trip to Marietta.

Even though the games were over several hours ago, I love reading the reporters blogs….felt like I was at those other games! Come on bballfan, sounds like you been eating sour grapes…when a team has a good, successful Coach then successful players are made. In this great country of ours, families are able to move to whatever district they choose or choose a school, from another district, at the transportation cost to the parents, that offers a certain curriculum/classes that other schools do not offer. If you look closely at our Norcross High Schools public records; we are not a school made up of a majority of wealthy families. We have a large, diverse population economically and racially international. My WASP child is in the minority….but we prefer our children go to a school that mirrors the “real” world. Please, let the kids play ball and have fun!

Norcross Mom…I am ALL ABOUT the kids having fun and playing. That’s what it should be about. But what fun is it for the kids who get pushed down the bench because a program (Norcross girl’s)recruits kids in to play. Those kids that work hard within the program, who have been there over the years waiting for their chance never get that opportunity. If kids are moving in for the curriculum why has that just started in the past 2 years? Hasn’t happened before. But now with a new coach you see kids moving in, as you put it for the curriculum, who just happen to be good basketball players. Just a coincidence I suppose. Mark my word Mom and watch. Their will be more “move ins for the curriculum” next year. As a fan, don’t have respect for a coach, program or a school that allows this to happen. In the girl’s program it’s not about the kids. It’s about an egotistical coach that wants to win with no regards for the kids. Find me this time next year and we can continue talking about the newest recruits.

Norcross recruits for boys basketball…DUH. My son was told at any other school he would do great, but not at NHS. However, academics rule at our house so at Norcross we stay. Do think it’s unfortunate that good kids can’t participate in sports because the deck is stacked against it. Attention Coaches-winning isn’t everything. Why not put the focus on supporting and developing good kids into wonderful adults. Just a thought from a parent on the inside!!

The word “recruit” is not an accurate term to describe a family moving to a school system that offers more opportunities. Those opportunities include higher academic standards (6 National Merit Finalists in 2009 and an International Baccalaureate Curriculum), participation in well established, accomplished and supported programs (Fine Arts, Technology, Academic Teams, and I could go on for hours), and the challenge and expectations of participating in athletic programs that are about placing the interest of each student above the interest of the coaches or critics. The results stand for themselves in Norcross Basketball, Football, Soccer, Swimming, and the list goes on. Students are given an opportunity to compete as well as earn athletic and academic scholarships that will set them up for their future when they are no longer able to play sports. Who wouldn’t want that? How many thousands of people in the Atlanta area moved here for better opportunities?
If you honestly believe that coaches are sitting at the phones or computers trying to get ahead by recruiting kids to play for them, you are nuts. When a family contacts the school to find out how they can be a part of the success and opportunities, it is on the parents to make that choice to relocate and “move in”. To question that decision is unbelievable. Most people don’t pick the college that is closest to them. They pick the one that best suits their goals and needs to prepare for the professional world. This has become the reality of selecting a high school as well. The difference is that when it is sports, it’s in the news.

So would private schools giving scholarships to great players for “academic” reasons be recruiting? They do it all the time…. Would AAU coaches affiliated with private schools running teams at the 10yr old level to 12yr who are urged to get the “best education” and get them in the school under the radar so they will be considered “home grown” be considered recruiting They do it a lot….. Would guys who are jealous of a good coach who is hardworking trash them publicly Obviously so….look in the mirror before you make comments What does a public school have to offer? It certainly isn’t money, so explain how they recruit.

Blah, blah, blah “you’re wrong.” I’ve witnessed first hand the recruiting that goes on at Norcross under “I’m seeking better academic opportunities.” A quick survey of where the current team members resided just two years ago will prove my point. Maybe if I didn’t know these parents personally I would join you in your rose-colored view of what is going on. As I stated earlier, academics come first in our household, however; it would be nice if the playing field was even when it comes to the make up of the boys b’ball team!

I was at the Mays games also and from what I could see it look like it wasn’t all Larrisa Carter.I saw Qouston Crawley put them on the board with the first point, she put on the best defense and put the stop on there point guard. With 16 point to Carter 14 look like she show up very well for Mays. You made it seem as if it was a Carter well it wasn’t.

Derby, what you are offering is your opinion, not facts. (That’s the bottom line, bballfan)
It is very well documented that the parents make the calls to see about playing at Norcross, not the other way around as way you claim. Girls and boys. The programs are run by great coaches who instill values, hard work and hold high standards. That’s why young basketball players want to be there.

I like your pick for the final four and the championship game for AAAA Girls…. but do you REALLY think that Mays would allow Fayette to pull it out 3 times in one year? The officials helped Fayette out tremendously in the region…. an even playing field and it is a different day! GO RAIDERS!
The breakdown - #11 Holsey for Mays plays intensive defense; #25 Carter has the paint on lock down…#10 High is the energizer bunny on defense; Freshman #50 Dean has a VERY bright future; #32 Crawley is an all around always there player; #3 Goss will always take it to the hole and will never be afaraid of punishment; and last but not least #4 Long…. she is the truth - when she is “in” the game the team wins!
The most important thing that I would like to leave you with about the LADY RAIDERS is this….they actually LOOK and ACT like girls! LOL other female players should take note…. we do not mind our female athletes beinging feminine…

Live Pink: YOU ARE SO RIGHT! I love the fact that our girls look like girls and they have crushes on boys! Who would have thought that this would be a rare quality in a female athlete?!?!?!?
You have to explain the LIVE PINK to others…. the AJC sure didn’t even though they were at the game!
LADY RAIDERS played for a cause on Friday…. they helped to raise money and awareness for BREAST CANCER… so the team had on pick T-shirts to warm up; the coaches wore pink polos; and the principal and his administration also supported by wearing the pink shirts as well! The girls also ROCKED pink laces in their shoes…. too cute!
