Take 10: State basketball tournament games we’d like to see
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
You wanted more basketball. You’re about to get more basketball. It’s state tournament time. We’ve scanned each classification looking for the games and matchups we’d like to see and selected one from each class in an effort to forecast the best games.
Here are the top 10 matchups we’d like to see in the state tournament:
10: Buford vs. Model (Class A girls) — There is no doubt who the two best teams in this classification are. The cream rises to the top with Gene Durden and Sally Echols. One of these two will be the walking away state champion.
9: Dublin vs. GAC (Class AA boys) — The Fighting Irish are very good. We’d like to see how they’d do in an all-classifications state tournament. Dublin’s only loss was by four points to Class AAAAA giant-slayer Collins Hill. Eddie Martin’s squad should be a worthy competitor.
8: Turner County vs. Whitefield Academy (Class A boys) — Wilkinson County could prevent this from happening, but we’re fans of Wolfpack coach Tyrone Johnson. There, we admit it. Shameless plug.
7: Baldwin vs. Columbia (Class AAA girls) — The Braves are likely the best team in this classification, and we just have a feeling about the Eagles. They lost to Dunwoody in the region finals, but we feel good about them making a tournament run. We’d just like to see them face the state’s best to prove us right (or wrong).
6: Miller Grove vs. Fayette County (Class AAAA boys) — We had fallen asleep on the Tigers after several early season losses — all in competitive national tournaments as part of the Noel Johnson World Tour. But we hope to see them up against the state’s best in the quarterfinals.
5: Wesleyan vs. Atlanta Dream (Class A girls) — Well, sure it’s a long shot. But we’d like to see someone challenge Jan Azar’s squad. We think the Dream would certainly be a defensive nightmare, but we have faith in Anne Marie Armstrong and Azar to bring home another title.
4: Fayette County vs. Marist (Class AAAA girls) — These two teams earn the curse of being in the same side of the bracket. Deep down, we’d like to see the Tigers face Mays (again) or Southwest DeKalb, but Marist has earned the right to play undefeated Fayette County after not losing any games in state all year.
3: Redan vs. Westlake (Class AAAAA girls) — The Raiders are undefeated and putting together a revenge trip back to the championship game. Westlake has been at ease in its first year of Class AAAAA ball and hasn’t lost to a Georgia opponent.
2: South Atlanta vs. Columbia (Class AAA boys) — Derrick Favors is a force of nature looking for his first state title. The Eagles have some special young players, including guard Jordan Price and are coming off a Class AAAA title.
1: Wheeler vs. Norcross (Class AAAAA boys) — Sure, they’ve faced off for the state title before. Now they’re likely to face off just to get to the Final Four. We’d like to see how each of the teams handles an Elite Eight game.
Go on. Take Ten. What are the postseason matchups you’d like to see? Where did we miss a game? Let us know.

Turner County and Whitefield would be a good match up but Turner County isnt going to make it to the finals. Although Whitfield should make it.

Columbia Girls have come along way this season. The coach should be given credit for the quick turnaround, but putting them in the same class as Baldwin is too much! The big girl is so overrated and the guards are to inconsistant to be factors in the playoffs, they may not even make it out the first round even thou they are playing at home. Sorry, but they are not ready a weak Dunwoody team beat them at home. Baldwin would kill them..

To me, the likely matchup of McEachern vs. Norcross and the possible matchup of McEachern vs. Wheeler are both more intriquing than Wh. vs. N. Anyway its cut though, all three are great matchups. And, barring a major upset, we’ll get two of them!

Turner County won’t win the title. Having seen them play, something’s missing. I can’t put my finger on what it is. Maybe it has something do with the local squad - who finished 8-18 - only trailing by a single point at the half against them.
Wesleyan against the 1978-79 Lowndes girls would be interesting. The game has changed a bit, but LoHi was head and shoulders better than everyone they played that season. Their defense was as good or better than their offense.
Wesleyan’s incredible, but not head and shoulders better than every one of their opponents. They have been beaten this year. To LoHi’s credit they were much better than every opponent that season and that included the AAA state champions who finished 27-3 (all losses to the Vikettes).

Well let me say this, you don’t want to play a team three times! Mays vs. Fayette County for the championship game….CHAMP: MAYS!!! From what I heard in the last meeting for the championship game, Fayette Co. went to the free throw line 21 times, while Mays only 5 times!!! Were the tigers the only aggressive team playing… NOT!!! I want a “tri”-match, not a re-match!!!

wesleyan girls should not be in class A they dont play any good teams until they get to the state, they should have left them in class AA i have seen them play and they are not all of that when you are beating teams like Greenforest 96-26 these private school are a joke they dont play anybody!

Buford and Model are Class AA.
Yes, Wesleyan is that good. They were the only GA team invited to the Nike Tournament this years.
And as for the comment that they shouldn’t be in A —- technically, GHSA made that call, not Wesleyan. Totally based on enrollment, just like all the other schools in the state.
It’s not like Wesleyan just started being good when the school was moved to A … trust me, the team was scoring like this over teams in AA, too … and not just the private schools, either.
If you want to argue that we should have a state-wide, all classification playoff, fine. Bring it on.
2001-2007, Five years as Championship, Two years as Runner-Up. Wesleyan owns the court at Macon Centreplex.

The discussion is CURRENT YEAR team matchups - not back-in-the-day teams.
Proof is in the record, tho - Jan Azar has coached more ladies’ championship teams in Georgia than anyone else.
And what a crime that Ane Marie Armstrong isn’t in the Naismith finalist list. Had Wesleyan been in AA this year, she likely would be on the list.

THE STATE SHOULD REALLY BE ASHAMED OF ITS TOURNAMENT SEEDING PROCESS. THREE IS NO EXCUSE FOR THE QUATERFINALS AND SEMI FINALS OF EVERY CLASSIFICATION BEING BETTER GAMES THAN THE POTENTIAL CHAMPIONSHIP MATCHUPS.
FOR EXAMPLE THERE IS NO EXCUSE FOR COLUMBIA TO BE PLAYING SOUTH ATLANTA FOR THE SEMIFINALS THEY HAVE BEEN THE CLEAR CUT FAVORITES ALL YEAR LONG THEY SHOULD BE MEETING IN THE CHAMPIONSHIP. SAME WITH WHEELER AND NORCROSS. 5A HAS MAJORITY OF THEIR TOP TEN TEAMS IN ONE BRACKET AND ALL ARE SET TO MEET EACH OTHER LONG BEFORE THE FINAL FOUR.
OF ALL THESE TOP 10 GAMES TO WATCH VERY FEW IF ANY ARE SET TO HAPPEN FOR THE CHAMPIONSHIP. THIS IS A DISGRACE.

Glenn, Jordan Price probably has the best basketball IQ of any 9th grader in the Country. This kid is so fun to watch!! Jordan really plays well with the experience of Jershon Cobb 6’5 junior and Chris Grier 6’4 junior. Next year Columbia will have a national schedule with those guys in the backcourt. They’re gonna be the hottest topic in the State next season !! Expecially when they Shock the World and upset The Mighty S.Atlanta Hornets!!! Stay Tuned!!!

I do wish that the GHSA would change their state racket seeding to reflect their state wide record and ranking. There is no reason for the 2nd and 3rd best team in the state to possibly being playing each other in the 2nd round. even if they have to divide the grouping in half between the north and south teams because of travel that would still improve the tournament. For regions 5-8 decide on a ranking system to place the teams in a 1-16 place order and where the no. 1 teams play the no. 16 etc. In this way the best two teams should not play each other until thr qtr finals unless there is a big upset.

The GHSA cannot help the pairings. I certainly wish that they would go back to the old days of sub-region tournaments, region tournaments, and 16 teams, but that won’t happen. Too much money to be made this way.
The GHSA did have some influence on pairings in Class B and C tournaments in the 1950s. There was a time that a committee would fill out the bracket with “deserving” teams to along with the usual district winners. Today, that would an absolute disaster.
Wesleyan does have some control over its classification. They could play up. Public Savannah schools play up. The ADA of most of these would have them AAA sized. It’s quite arguably a disaster for them in football, but they’re very competitive in boys’ basketball. That stated, I don’t blame them for staying Class A.
It is true that Azar has won more state titles than any other girls’ coach. It’s very true that she has had some amazing talent.
If a time machine could be invented, I would like to see them play against the other great teams of the past. Lowndes was arguably just as dominant - 122 consecutive wins and four straight state titles. They did this in an era where you had to finish #1 or #2 in both the sub-region and region and couldn’t host state tournament games at your own gym. Not saying that Wesleyan couldn’t operate in this era as I’m sure they would do well.
Likewise South Atlanta versus Southside (with James Forrest) or a loaded Westover (Dontonio Wingfield) would be incredible. But if you want to stick to current or nearly current matchups, Wesleyan against Kendrick’s squad of last year.

If Norcross would have taken care of business in their region, then they would have potentially faced Wheeler in the championship game. Because Norcross lost their region championship game, they ended up on the same side as Wheeler.

Trust me. Azar and her girls had no desire to drop to single A. The school decided to do that when the GHSA did away with the 1.5 private school enrollment multiplier. Basically they let the football coaches make the call to drop to single A for the entire school. All of the other athletics at Wesleyan did great in AA. Azar would play up in 5A if it was allowed. Most of non-football Wesleyan was against the school dropping in classification but the football coaches wanted the easier road and they got it.

The best keep secrets in AA basketball is Northeast- Macon boys and Central- Macon boys. Dublin has been ranked all yearlong, but the size Northeast has will be hard to stop if they doesn’t underachieve. Northeast has had a few mental breakdowns but should be fear due to the amount of talent that it has in their fold for now in the future. As for Central just say,” Matt”. Matt and his crew will go as far as Matt takes them. He is scoring machine that understands the game. Watch out Dublin the route to the state championship game will go I-16 east to Macon Centerplex.

Wesleyan has a good program, they have the rings to show it. But they really don’t play anyone during the regular season. When they played Buford who is in 2AA class they lost and when they played Norcross who is right across the street they lost. All the private schools have the built in advantage of being able to go get their players. So I think all private schools should all be placed in the single A class and let them fight it out among themselves. Wesleyan wouldn’t survive in 4AAAA or 5AAAAA ball, they are good for A and AA ball. But if they had to play teams like Southwest dekalb, Stephenson, Redan etc.. Do you really think they would be winning titles like they currantly are?

Eagle1 it won’t Shock the world. Although people have had S. Atlanta ranked high and rightfully so. S. Atlanta knows they dont want to play Columbia and people who know basketball know columbia has more tools to get the job done. They may have the top player in the country but even with him its hard for anyone to contend with 7-8 D1 players on one team.

To Victoria Wins: Wesleyan constantly plays teams from bigger classes and ususaly wins. Buford’s win against Wesleyan this year was their first in nine years. Wesleyan had won 22 straight againgt Buford until this season. Wesleyan beat AAAA Miller Grove, which is the No. 3 seed from region 6-AAAA where SW Dekalb is. Wesleyan beat Miller Grove by 40. Wesleyan is currently ranked No. 37 in the nation and No. 10 in the Southeast by ESPN. They are 3-2 this season against NATIONALLY RANKED TEAMS. These aren’t nationally ranked Class A or AA teams. They have beaten THREE other nationally ranked teams this year…Butler from North Carolina is 26-1 and ranked No. 26 in the nation. Their one loss is to Wesleyan. Brea Olinda from California is 26-2 and ranked No. 30 in the nation. One of their two losses is to Wesleyan. Wesleyan also beat Woodson from DC which was nationally ranked at the time. They are currently ranked No. 17 in the Southeast by ESPN, right ahead of Parkview. Wesleyan’s other two losses other than Norcross and Buford are to Regis Jesuit from Colorado, currently ranked No. 20 in the nation and St. Mary’s from California, currently ranked No. 21 in the nation. Pretty impressive I’d say.

CORRECTION… Wesleyan DID make the choice to go to single A With the new classifications, they were allowed to move to A and they did to win a football title. Several schools (Marist, GAC, Lovett) decided to stay in their classification when they could have moved.
By To WeslryanFan
February 28, 2009 10:37 AM | Link to this
Lovett and GAC did stay put, as well as Marist. The only difference is that Marist is a AA school that plays in AAAA. They were not placed there because of the 1.5 multiplier. The 1.5 multiplier would have placed them in AAA, but they appealed to play in AAAA. Even when the multiplier was “done away with,” Marist continued to play in AAAA, which is 2 classes above the enrollment of that school. I am not a supporter of private schools being in the GHSA, but that school has my respect. At least they see their advantage. All private schools should have to play up two classes.

Wesleyan’s played more big teams nationally than the rest of the state, and come out on the winner.
Anyone who watched this season’s game vs Buford - including Coach Landers from UGA - can tell you the officiating was the worst seen in years.
There was absolutely no calling anything on Buford, including a highly visible 10-second rule violation that was later hyped as a huge defensive play by Andraya Carter. It wasn’t.
My son’s church league basketball is officiated better than that game was. All three officials should be benched until they learn the rules of the game and to apply equally to both teams.
Buford won on trips to the foul line and ginned up calls. That game was more like a no-holds- barred match for Buford and both-hands-tied match for Wesleyan.

U KNOW WHAT, I READ THE BLOGS BUT NEVER COMMENT BUT IT MUST BE SAID. NO SOUTH ATLANTA IS NOT THE BEST TEAM IN THE STATE. IM NO MILLER GROVE FAN BUT I SAW THEM PERSONALLY DESTROY SOUTH ATLANTA BY 10 AFTER MISSING 30 FREE THROWS. THEY WOULDA BEAT THEM BY 40 SUM ODD POINTS HAD THEY HIT FREE THROWS. I DONT WANNA HEAR THE EXCUSE THAT IT WAS A PREASEASON GAME BECAUSE IT WAS 2 DAYS B4 THE START OF THE SEASON AND S. ATLANTA DRESSED ALL PLAYERS AND FAVORS PLAYED THE WHOLE GAME. THEY LATER BEAT WESTLAKE BY 20, AND CENTENNIAL AT THEIR HOUSE BY 16. TUCKER BY 20 TWICE AND MARIST TWICE. I UNDERSTAND PEOPLE WANTING TO GIVE THEIR OPINION BUT LETS BE REAL WITH OURSELVES HERE. THIS TEAM LOADED WITH 7 0R 8 MAJOR CONFERENCE D1 PLAYERS COULD PLAY AND BEAT S. ATL, AND ANY OTHER TEAM IN THE STATE 9 OF 10 TIMES. I WILL BE THE FIRST TO BE LOGICAL AND QUIT BEING BIASED. THAT MILLER GROVE TEAM IS THE BEST IVE SEEN SINCE WESTOVER OF 94. IF U SAY OTHER WISE UR A HATER. PLAIN AND SIMPLE. THIS IS COMING FROM A COLUMBIA HIGH FAN. IF I CAN ADMIT IT THEN SO CAN U SCOUT OF THE YEAR AND ANY OTHER HIGH SCHOOL B-BALL FAN.

This is for bystander, you must take after your coach in whinning and complaining whenever you get beat. The officials had nothing to do with the tail whipping you took by Buford. Wesleyan has a great program, but when you get beat, you always look for an excuse (this was also the case with Norcross this year where Azar blamed the officials in the paper)so I guess when you get beat, someone is to blame, so put the blame on Andraya Carter. She went deep all night long and layed it up on your defense becasuse you were not smart enough to put someone back to protect. How many times does one girl beat you that bad and you still do nothing to adjust (oh, I forgot you couldn’t make adjustments when you can do nothing but complain to the refs) Please for once in your life give another team credit for playing well. You said all you needed to say when you talked about the 10 sec call. There was no 10 sec call in the whole game. You must have been talking when Andraya dribbled around the whole Wesleyan defense for the last 45 seconds of the third quarter and was smiling the whole time before she hit Blanche to end the quarter with a jumper or when she went up for the ally oop at the rim and the crowd went crazy. Are you also going to make an excuse about andraya shutting down your best shooter and say she had an off night. Keep on blaming the refs when you get beat, but refs don’t give out 20 whippings like you took and before you even talk about the free throw situation, Wesleyan fouled the last 3 minutes of the game and thats when Buford shot 22 of those free throws that your coach quoted in the paper. Poor excuse also, because your players are trying to foul to get close in the end. Up until that time the free throw situation was even. Buford has a great team that plays with class and never makes excuses for wins or loses, Durden would not put up with that. Have a little bit of humble pie and I am not gloating about our win, I think Wesleyan has a great team and their record proves it, but I can’t stand fans and programs who blames refs for loses (do you really think they care who wins) and never gives opposing teams credit for playing well. Look back at all the loses or near loses in Wesleyan past in the newspaper and it was never because of them, it was always somebody elses fault. Don’t down grade Bufords players and programs by making cheap excuses. As your fans and program always points out this is the first time in nine years that Buford has beat you, but it want be the last. That is just another way you discredit what we did this year, but have you heard the statement “you can’t live in the past”
Good Luck to you and your program in the tournament and learn to be humble and it will help the appearance of your program. You don’t have to cut down others to build yourself up.

S.Atlata Fan And Bid O it is a hellava difference when you play a Team like Columbia and a game such as the state final four game to be played by Columbia and S.Atlanta. 1. S.Atlanta hasnt played anyone in the state with a decent team in the heart of the season this year. Forget about who yall played in this tournament and that tournament. Those games was just to see How Good Derrick was against other Big Time Players such as himself. Centenial and McEachern dont count because win lose or draw they was stiill goona be in they’re class AAAAA tourney. That being said name one team since McEachern that S.Atlanta played in state this year with a program and talent( more than 1 player on the team that really play) than the Columbia Eagles have????? NO Team especially a AAA!!! Yeah you guys beat those Rinky Dink teams like that because they are scared of you guys and they go in the game knowing they cant beat yall in the first place. 2.Now i really know u guys are Krazy as h—- to think S.Atlanta is gonna beat a well seasoned young program like Columbia by 30-40 pts? Plain stupid, you guys dont follow basketball around here to think that. 3. Will u guys be a S.Atlanta fan next year when Malone and Favors gone? Hell No!!!! So stop wit all this S.Atlanta nonesense because you guys like Favors! Not the Program!!! 4.After Columbia Beat S.Atlanta this year wait until next year when you hear about Jershon Cobb ,Jordan Price,Chris Grier, Tank Sessions, Pierre”Truck” Tyson, Jamal “Hotpotato”Reid And Big Sam I Am The 6’9 sleeper and a fine sophomore and freshman bench!! Change your name to Columbia Fan because it sure as h—- not gonna be South Atlanta Fan!!! Its gonna read Used 2 Be A South Atlanta Fan!!!!! Go Eagles!!! Can S.Atlanta say Back to Back??? You gotta lot of time on your hands S.Atlanta Fan because you are reading it!!!Lol To answer the ? about Milton Coach McCrary let the guys play themselves just to show them that they are not as good they think they are without his Supervision. See we have a Master teacher who teaches the mental aspect of the game not just scoring alot points. That game was set up perfect by Dr. McCrary to bring them off of that high horse they were on. It worked!!!Since the M.L.King Tourney they dont like the feelin of losing to anyone in state. That being said We were in good company because Miller Grove beat #1 Centenial at the time. Helleva Tourney to get your team ready for in state play. While you guys are on T.V playing against a team that dont care what goes on in the State of Ga. We opted to take our lesson as a Team and Community! Losing Sucks!!! We will not lose to S.Atlanta!!!! For the 1000000 time!!!!
