Picking the final fours: We’re liking Wheeler, Redan

Get a load of McEachern’s draw in the state tournament. Mike Thompson, McEachern’s coach, is probably on the phone w/ the GHSA on Monday to discuss the merits of using the RPI ratings to seed Class AAAAA.

McEachern, a region champ with no losses in Class AAAAA, is looking at Walton, a top-10 team; Norcross, the three-time defending champion; and Wheeler, the team I’m picking to win it.

The bottom quarter of the draw has those four teams in it. Any could win state. Three have been nationally ranked. They’d thrive under the NCAA’s way of seeding March Madness.

Two years ago, Norcross had to play Wheeler in the first round, then Meadowcreek, which was 26-2; and Marietta in the QF. That was pretty tough. But I would take that over McEachern’s gantlet this year.

Here is my shot at picking the final fours. I think McEachern will make it, but not win it all.

Todd, you are correct. That quadrant of the bracket is as tough as it gets. I saw the Region 6AAAAA Semi-Finals and Finals and they were quite impressive. Milton will be the 2011 State Champions. They have a very young, talented team. Walton is a very dangerous team and if you catch them on a night when they are all on, look out! Centennial is very strong. Lorenzo Brown might have been the best player on the floor this weekend. He is so smooth and I wouldn’t want to be down a point with the ball in his hands. Wheeler looked pretty close to the top of their game. That’s pretty good considering they played without one of their weapons, Taj Tate, who will be back for the State Tournament. Credit Joey Jerome for stepping up and playing his best game of the season. Jamal Tiller and Karl Cochran both played outstanding defense, but Wheeler is all about the balance of Richard Howell, Ari Stewart and Phil Taylor. Those guys play so well togehter and Taj will step right in and take them to an even higher level. If they play close to where they played on Saturday, they will bring the crown back to Cobb County.

I would not be at all shocked if Walton beat McEachern on Saturday. Walton just doesn’t play defense and their offense has to be clicking for them to take out a top team, but if it is, beware.

I’m hoping Franklin County and South Atlanta make it to the finals in AAA, setting up a UGA commitment (Mayfield) vs a Tech commitment (Favors). No doubt Favors is the better of the two but being a FCHS ulumni, then, well, what the heck.

As far as the girls, well, I have to actually pick Franklin County to win it all there.

Todd,You really went out on a limb pickin’Wheeler. You and everybody else are NOW pickin’ the Wildcats.I’m not mad and will not disagree. However,I do not think Westlake will be the team to face Wheeler.Personally I don’t think they are disaplined enough to take that big of a step right now. They have underachieved the entire season,so I don’t expect that to change now.Let me say that Westlake has great size from top to bottom. But suspect guard play and inconsistant low post play from everyone accept “JB”(can’t remember his full name)will eventually haunt them. It just seems as though they have folded up in every big game they’ve faced this season.Whether it was Memphis teams Ralaigh-Egypt,and Ridgeway,or Leflore(Ala.)or even Newnan. There seems to be a lot of “flash”and not enough “substance”. In order to get there they will probably have to go through a tough Stephenson team that lost to a Redan team runnin’ on all cylinders this past weekend. There was not much that Stephenson could do that night.Redan did someting they haven’t done all year, and will not do again the remainder the this season…shoot almost 65 percent from the field. This blogger beleives that Stephenson is fine flyin’ under the radar. If Westlake cannot withstand a constant press, and compete with the Jaguars’guard tandem of Dukes, and Coleman they will suffer yet another heartbreaking loss. Oh yeah, I had a chance to see these teams face each other this summer at Ga.State.Guess what happened? (I’m sure sombody will chime in and tell)

Todd,You really went out on a limb pickin’Wheeler. You and everybody else are NOW pickin’ the Wildcats.I’m not mad and will not disagree.

I picked a Wheeler-Norcross final about a month ago. Now, they’re in the same quarter of the draw, so that won’t happen.

It will be interesting to see who comes out of the quarter opposite Wheeler. It’s probably anybody’s guess. I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s Westlake or Stephenson. I spoke w/ Savannah coach Tim Jordan this morning. He doesn’t have an real stars or high D-1 players, but Savannah has been in the state playoffs for about 12 years straight now and is typically tough to match up with unless they’ve playing a team that just has too much talent to defend.

HSBBguy,

You seem to be very knowledgable about 5A Region 2. Could you provide some more insight into Redan? I know they have Hall, I know they have some other size with a couple of other players over 6’7” and I know about their coaching issues. From what I can see, they have put some real stinkers up this year in scoring 29, 37, 42, 44 and 44 in five games, actually winning the game in which they scored 29! On the other hand, they scored 70+ a few times. Are they that inconsistent? Is it a case of underperformance? Is it a matter of distraction? Do they consistently play outstanding defense? What should we expect from them in the playoffs? Thx

Also, my three “sleepers” are Stephenson, South Gwinnett and Collins Hill. With all of the justifiable hoopla about the McEachern, Walton, Norcross, Meadowcreek quadrant, not much has been said about Centennial’s path, which should have to go through SGwinn and Collins Hill, two teams which have three things that have given Centennial fits: (1) size (c)solid D (3)good half court capabilites. Beyond North Cobb, their path is laced with risk. C should get through it, but it might not be easy and some folks beyond ZO have to step up.

William, your views on the other end of the bracket interest me as well. You seem to be in tune with GW county schools.I for the most part I follow city of Atlanta, and Dekalb county. Ok,Redan High;I’ve seen them seven times this year and beleive that inconsistency has plagued them as well as lack of shootin’ from their guards.Teams such as Greenbriar(whom they scored those low totals against)simply pack it in and played the percentages. Now their guards can be very disruptive up top on defense, but are kinda small. However there is no lack of fight and they(the guards) will not back down!!They were exploited twice by a very good Stephenson backcourt.(but then again so were a lot of other teams) Kenny(Hall)has spent so much of his high school in the low post that it seemed that their options where limited. But it looks as if they have been given a breathe of fresh air with the coaching change.(absolutely no respect to Coach Green)Now you’ll find Kenny out on the floor, mostly at the top of the key, workin’ that high low to Raymond, the other big and also drop a 3pointer here and there. They throw the ball over the top with with lethal intentions.(15 dunks on Stephenson)There rotation is 3 deep for the most part with minimal contributions from the bench except for no.32 who started at some point this season. Bottom line,if the guards are dropin shots they are a difficult team.I just don’t see that happening. PROVE ME WRONG RAIDERS…GO DEKALB CO!!!That is how I see the Redan Raiders. This has been your weekly scouting report. Later Will

Todd,

Dead-eye on target in AA with the Dublin boys. They have several weapons and rolled through 3AA in fine form. Their only loss, in the Kruel Classic in Fla to 7AAAAA champion Collins Hill was a game of woulda-coulda-shoulda and is the only blemish. They topped that runner-up spot with a thrashing of Wilkinson in The Palace in the finals of the Warriors own tournament and you smartly picked Wilco to take the A crown. Pretty good hoops being played down in middle GA.

Bring it home Irish and Warriors!

i’m glad i wont have to watch norcross and wheeler in the finals again this year. everyone knows they recruit their players. why would anyone just wanna move into the wheeler district? they wouldnt. maybe this is what that region deserves.

I had the chance to see the Redan and Fayette County girls lose in the championship game last year to Stephenson and SW DeKalb respectively. Knowing they were both young teams, I knew at that time we’d see both of them again in the finals. The ladies in the state can really play the roundball.

Had a chance to see the 6 AAAA championship with Marist (boys and girls), Miller Grove (boys), and SW DeKalb (girls). Though I pull for the public schools, Marist plays a great, fundamental basketball game. Don’t be surprised if both their teams make the semi-finals.

In the AAAAA Boys Centennial draw, what about a South Gwinnett vs. Collins Hill match-up in the Elite Eight? The storyline around Collins Hill Coach Josh Grayson, who played at South Gwinnett in the early 90’s, surely would add some intrigue. Given the fact that Collins Hill just took down Norcross to win Region 7-AAAAA and South has returned back to the top of 8-AAAAA, are we destined to see these two school face off with a Final Four berth on the line? Centennial will have something to say about that, but the Comets and Eagles do control the home court advantage in that draw.

Maybe the movement of talent should be made a matter between the respective schools instead of between the school and the kid. For example, David Boyd at Milton could offer Valdosta a new, fully-loaded team minibus, 2 JV players to be named later and an undisclosed sum of cash in exchange for super soph. Jay Rome for 2010 and 2011.

In all seriousness, love them or hate them, “transfers” will be a major factor until more than a simple residence test is the determinative factor. But, on further thought, Boyd might seriously support the bartering approach!

I have a hard time believing in Valdosta because everyone said the exact same things about Savannah last year and Savannah got blown out of the state by Norcross. Ever since AAAAA became a classification in 1998, no south team has won the tournament. South teams have gaudy records because they play weak regions. Valdosta might be a 3 seed from region 6-AAAAA or region 7-AAAAA

Us ole timers remember him as AA.

I know you follow the game a lot so I’ve probably seen you at some tourney games. Go to 50 to 60 games most years, but this year will probably see only 40 or so after the tourney.

As a dark horse and looking at their draw, Milton may surprise and win it all. Gw teams this year are weak except Norcross, C Hill will not be a factor.

It’s not a selection committee. It’s a bracket that inserts teams based on finish in the region. The No. 1 seeds from regions 4 and 5 were preordained to be in the same half of the draw.

They have beaten THREE other nationally ranked teams this year…Butler from North Carolina is 26-1 and ranked No. 26 in the nation. Their one loss is to Wesleyan. Brea Olinda from California is 26-2 and ranked No. 30 in the nation. One of their two losses is to Wesleyan. Wesleyan also beat Woodson from DC which was nationally ranked at the time. They are currently ranked No. 17 in the Southeast by ESPN, right ahead of Parkview. Wesleyan’s other two losses other than Norcross and Buford are to Regis Jesuit from Colorado, currently ranked No. 20 in the nation and St. Mary’s from California, currently ranked No. 21 in the nation. Pretty impressive I’d say.

dont you think if campbell or marietta recruited, they would be winning state every year? especially since their coaches are 2 of the best in the state. doug lipscomb doesnt know how to coach, but his recruiting makes up for it. and ps milton stole a kid from marietta this year, mceachern stole 2 kids from marietta this year. and marietta did not recruit aaron gilstrap. he attended marietta middle school and high school until his dad moved him to wheeler. he just came back when his dad realized that wheeler wasnt giving him what they offered. and chad lang is pretty soft to be recruited. he’s a great kid, but if marietta recruited, they would have recruited a stronger big guy. and anyone that wants to talk about wheeler’s magnet program? it can barely keep up with the academics offered by campbell and marietta.

if people wanna recuit, fine. but they should at least make those schools play in a different tournaments. its not fair to have entire AAU teams competing against regular high school basketball teams. but i guess nobody ever said life was fair

By Quit whining!

February 25, 2009 8:35 PM | Link to this

Just because a kid moves into a school district because he wants to play for a certain coach or a certain school or with certain players doesn’t mean the school is recruiting. Take for instance the kid who moved from Cherokee to Centennial. He played for a team that got hardly any attention or recognition. So, what does he do? He moves into the Centennial district and is seen by a whole lot more college coaches and plays for much better coach and gets a real chance to compete for a State Championship team.

Playing on a team with high calliber basketball players versus a team where you are the only Division I player makes you a much better and complete player. It also gives you a lot more exposure to college coaches.

Just because the school you cheer for loses players to other teams doesn’t mean they were given houses, jobs or shoes. They just made a decision to play fro a team that would give them a better chance.

Todd:

You’re forgetting that the best basketball in the state is played in DeKalb County. Region 6AAAA will once again feature an all-DeKalb final in both boys and girls. Look for Miller Grove to knock off Tucker in the boys final, while Southwest DeKalb will defend its title with a victory over Marist. The Redan girls will finally win one for coach Rhonda Malone in AAAAA. You’ve obviously forgotten about the best boys basketball program in the state right now in Columbia. Coach Phil McCrary’s Eagle are on a roll and always peak at the state tournament. Can you say the same about South Atlanta? Columbia will win that game by at least 10 points and then roll dominate in the final for a third state title in the last four years.

Greetings Tood Holcomb,

I’m back again. I’ve out of the blog for a while dealing other issues to include lots of required travel time. But I see that the predictions of the Ladies final have been picked already in Class AAAAA.

What do you think about the Bradwell Institute Lady Tigers? Coach Faye Baker has done a really good job down there in Hinesville. Have you taken a look at their overall record?

They have played a pretty good competitive schedule in the regular season, and against some great teams. Is’nt that one of the things that you look at for ranking purposes? Strength Of Schedule?

They have played some good teams from within, and out of the State, they have played against Ranked Teams, and they have won. I believe they captured the Sub Region but lost against another tough Team in Region 3-AAAAA. Beach High School for the Region Title.

Your prediction is that Redan will be in the final four. Well I say the Bradwell Institute Lady Tigers are still in there as well, and I believe that they will be there in the final four. So lets not count them out. Now provided that both teams ( Redan & Bradwell ) win their next game, they will meet each other.

This will be a big game between the two, and the winner will go on to in my prediction, to the semi finals. I wont predict any further than that right now. But right now, I believe that Bradwell Institute Ladies will make the final four.

They are a great team this year. It will be very wise not to look over them.

Sorry Todd, There were a few typos.

What I meant to say is I’ve been out of the blog for a while dealing other issues to include lots of required travel time. But I see that the predictions of the Ladies final Four have been picked already in Class AAAAA.

TOM I THINK YOUR CRAZY FOR PICKING MARIST TO BE IN THE FINAL 4. I CAN AGREE THAT MILLER GROVE VS. RICHMOND ACADEMY BUT MARIST VS. BAINBRIDGE IS A CRAZY PICK. HILLGROVE VS. BAINBRIDGE IS A SMART PICK. HILLGROVE HAS THE BEST RECORD IN 4A. HILLGROVE IS 27-2 AND WERE RANKED #2 IN STATE. HILLGROVE HANDS DOWN HAS THE BEST DEFENSE IN 4A PERIOD. HOILLGROVE HAS 3 BIG MEN WHO ARE EXCELLENT JAMAAL PRYOR, HEATH HOUSTON, AND MIKE VOSO. THERE UNDERATED STAR PLAYER DARIUS BOUGH IS A GREAT PLAYER WHO HAS AWSOME POTENTIAL. NOT TO MENTION THE INTELLIGENT POINT GUARD PLAY FROM KELTON BUCHANAN. TOM GO WATCH HILLGROVE THEY ARE THE SECOND BEST TEAM BEHIND MILLERGROVE AND THEY HAVE THE BEST CHANCE OF BEATING MILLERGROVE OVER ANY TEAM IN 4A. PLEASE GO WATCH HILLGROVE PLAY THIS FRIDAY AGAINST TUCKER AND YOU WILL SEE WHAT IM TALKING ABOUT.
