Georgia High School Basketball Blog
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
With the state tournament just around the corner, we’re revving up the old engine on the Georgia High School Basketball blog. But we need a jumpstart.
If you headed out to any of tonight’s games, report what you see right here.
We’re looking for live updates, scores and highlights.
Which teams aren’t getting enough respect and which teams are getting too much? Were there any college coaches in attendance? How about highlight-reel dunks? Let us have it.
In return, we’ll be posting game stories and recaps before they hit the press.
Friday Night Game Stories
• New stars, new coach, Norcross keeps rolling
• No. 8 Walton upsets No. 4 Wheeler
• Friday night boys round-up
• Girls round-up
• Anyone see Riverdale’s Judson Dillard drop 49 on Mundy’s Mill? How good is this kid?
• Have you voted yet on the AJC’s high school dunk contest?
• Who are the state’s top junior prospects? According to Rivals.com, it’s Westlake foward Jelan Kendrick.

Please let me know where region 6A AAAAA high school basketball tournament is being held, their matchups, and times. I believe this is going to be one of the best regional tournaments in the Atlanta area. Thanks J.T.

Ryan Harrow from Walton Took over the game against wheeler. He made amazing layups and The put back dunks by Glen Rice where huge in this game! Wheeler not have Taj Tate did not help ( maybe he should stop being a punk in the classroom and he get some attention on a stacked wheeler team.

Hey! Where are all you Wheeler Whiners now?
With a mixed record all season long—-and your sad stories about “how hard” you’ve had it, and your schedule is tough, and injuries, etc. etc……What do you have to say now that you’ve been beaten again?
Can you admit you never belonged in the top 10?
Can you NOW finally admit you are and have been OVERRATED?
Thank you! thank you! Thank you!

Way to go, Nasty and Mean!
I remember when Centennial (Who beat a highly rated Roswell team with their bench—holding Roswell to just 14 points in the 1st half —-who beat Wheeler @ Wheeler, and with a MUCH better record and schedule—-was rated well behind Wheeler.
Even a blind man would know this was obvious bias by the writer.
Now—-the TRUTH is out! Wheeler was/is OVERRATED!

Wheeler is a great program and has a very good team. However when you play the kind of sch they do you will be surprised from time to time. I still think wheeler is the team to beat so Norcross will continue to think that we will have to beat wheeler to win our fourth consecutive sate championship.
The bigger questions are who will win region 6’s regional tournament and who will be the 4 teams that will advance to the state championship tournament? This will shape the entire state championship tournament. If you like high school basketball I would advise you to make sure that you get the region 6 sch and plan to see about five of those games. Could be the best in recent Atl history. Remember wheeler and walton will probably meet again real soon and Lassiter could be a big spoiler.

Mr.KnowitAll,your kidding me right! Wheeler by no means is overrated,They’re ranked 5th.the lost was 1 point w/o FREEZE TATE,who proably the 2nd best player in the state GA.Moving on,McEachern is the team to beat! They can run or if you want half court game they can do that as well. Westlake Girls& Boys are in all or nothing problem, they will lose most of all there talent to Langston Hughes high in May of this year.So in other words they got git err dun.

TheHilisreal, How is Taj Tate the second best player in the state your a joke to think that! There is three kids on his team that are better than him 2 kids on walton brown from centenial and many more from around the state. The reason why he didnt play is because is a stupid kid who got a 10 day oss for an altercation with a teacher. The second best in the state? Your Blind and obvioulsy have not seen another team play this year!

mean and nasty- i guess you forgot wheeler won the first meeting by 11 points…they lost on the road by 1 point to a ranked team without their starting SG…tate is not the 2nd best player in the state, but he is easily one of the better SGs and has been missed in the 3 games he has been out, lassiter, campbell and walton. his penetration and 3 pt shooting is what helps wheeler go…and whoever said centennial had a better schedule than wheeler is just plain ignorant, that comment is not even worth responding too…maybe you saw the game on espn 2 last night, wheeler played both of those national teams, beating lincoln by 20 pts, and losing to st patricks, a team that is just ridiculously stacked..devil lover i think you might be one of the few intelligent poeple on here, not overreacting to wins and losses, but understanding the ups and downs of season. i expect norcross to reach the final, and hopefully wheeler will be the opponent for another great title game

The Region 6 bracket draws provide favorable positioning to Wheeler and Lassiter,as they will have weak Rd. 2 opponents. Getting the toughest draw, are Walton and Milton will have to play each other in Round 2 . One of these fine teams will have to go home for the year. Centennial has a tricky probable 2nd round draw with Campbell, a talented team that can run and play with anybody.
I attend a lot of games and, while a big fan of Region 6 basketball, I am not a fan of a particular team. Of the 25 or so games that I’ve attended this year, I’ve seen Wheeler play 5 times, including the two games against Walton. Even though the other four of their games that I’ve seen were wins, in my opinion, Wheeler played their best game of the 5 last night in terms of D, teamwork and hustle. The lid was on the basket, as their FG% and FT% semed dismally low. And, still an 81 point production and a 1 point road loss to a quality team without a key senior starter in Tate.
There are some really knowldgeable basketball fans on here who provide informative insights. There are also a few blithering idiots on who know very little and can’t write effectively enough to express what little they do know. And, before I get accused of being a Wheeler fan by one of these idiots, let me re-state that I’m NOT!
Devil Lover is right about the Reg 6 tourney. It is going to provide us with at least 6 outstanding matchups from the 2nd round forward.

Where can you get the drawings for all the regionals especially in 5A regions 7 and 8. Doesn’t any paper do a half job on this? Yes I know some drawings are today and some tomorrow. It’s really frustrating to even get the locations to regionals.
I guess my 30 years in Ky with so much coverage, I got spoiled. I been going to the Ga state tourneys for 12 to 15 years and it’s like pulling teeth to get tourney info. Yes the players in Ga are second to none nationally, I know I’ve seen um. Yes I know about GHSA.net but is no help in regionals or to state tourney locations except Gw Arena and Macon.
Just a hodge podge. Any fans out there with some help. Many thanks in advance!!!

Norcross will probably play Mill Creek Friday at N Gwinnett and if they win, will play either Peachtree Ridge or Collins Hill Sat for the regional championship also at N Gwinnett.

bill, tourney fan I’ve been fighting with AJC all season long about the lack of High School Basketball Coverage. I think the AJC has a link to the Gwinnett area that covers sports. Region 2 5A tourney starts on 02-17-09 at Newton High School. Redan Lady Raiders are the #1 seed on the girls side and Stephenson Boys are the #1 seed on the boys side. The championship game is 02-21-09 at Newton High School.

Hamma, I went to the Norcross school Web site and Brookwood site to get Reg 7 and 8 5A. THAT unbelievably was the only place to find them. Bball coverage in this state STINKS. Best HS players in the country with the WORST coverage. I usually go to 50 or 60 HS games a year and some AAU events. If not for Rivals and Scout, it would be a total loss in this state. Oh well, I reallly enjoy this time of year. 5A is wide open for the first time in 10 years.

Bill, try shooting Tim Ellerbe an e-mail, editor of the sports section at AJC and let him know we are demanding more coverage of High School Basketball. The AJC is so into football that it’s crazy. Let Tim know it’s BASKETBALL season! I”ve been in contact all season long asking for more coverage.

South Atlanta fans will have the shock of their lives when they play the Columbia Eagles! I have seen South Atlanta play, although D Favors is the man,it will be a long nite playing against Columbias Deeep bench.Jershon Cobb 6’5 jr. might be the best all around guard in the state. He is also ranked in the top 5 Juniors in the state!!! Jordan Price 6’4 freshman is the top rank freshman in Ga and #7 in the USA and he is the truth!!! 6’4 Chris Grier will shut Andre Malone down!! Next Columbia has 3 6’8 players to beat up on Favors!!! Come on wit it South Atlanta!!! A Royal Butt Whoopin is waiting!! Columbia is not ranked #2 by chance? Take away Derrick Favors would S. Atlanta still be #1? I dont think so!!!!!!

I’m a Bradwell Institute Tiger Fan,
Congrats goes to the Lady Bulldogs. This was a great year for both Bradwell, and Beach. The two dominated Region 3-AAAAA. Maybe we will meet again in the finals. Go Blue and Gold. That is for both teams.
