Georgia High School Basketball: Boys Metro Top 10 All-Classification
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
It was another dominating week for some of the best teams in the state, with the top 10 boys’ metro teams going 17-2.
Both losses came in Region 6-AAAAA games — No. 8 Milton lost 74-70 to No. 6 Centennial and No. 7 Lassiter lost 70-68 to No. 4 Wheeler.
Wheeler already has wrapped up the top seed in its subregion, but faces a challenging week by playing host to dangerous Campbell tonight and traveling to No. 10 Walton Friday.
Here’s a look at the metro area’s 10 hottest teams:
The Metro Top 10 All-Classification rankings
1: South Atlanta (20-3) — The Hornets, ranked No. 20 nationally by one publication, crushed Region 4-AAA’s second-place teams Spalding and Rutland last week.
2: Norcross (22-1) — The Blue Devils moved their Class 7-AAAAA winning streak to 34 after rolling past three region foes by an average of 39 points.
3: McEachern (20-3) — The Indians put together their third consecutive season of 20 or more victories by routing Woodstock and South Cobb by an average of 24 points.
4: Wheeler (16-6) — The Wildcats easily beat Pope and slipped past No. 7 Lassiter, 70-68, on Phil Taylor’s fall-away 3-pointer at the buzzer.
5: Miller Grove (20-3) — The Wolverines beat Region 6-AAAA foe Lithonia by 30 and ends regular- season play by taking on talented Tucker Friday.
6: Centennial (20-2) — The Knights also posted their third consecutive season of 20 or more victories by edging No. 8 Milton 74-70 and routing Alpharetta by 31.
7: Lassiter (18-5) — The Trojans beat dangerous Campbell by 5 and lost to No. 4 Wheeler on a last-second shot. They face No. 6 Centennial tonight.
8: Milton (16-6) — The Eagles were edged out by No. 6 Centennial and beat Kell by 21. They wrap up Region 6-AAAAA play by taking on Campbell Friday.
9: Columbia (21-2) — The Eagles crushed fellow Region 6-AAA members McNair and Alcovy to mark their sixth consecutive season with 20 or more victories.
10: Walton (15-7) — The Raiders beat fellow Region 6-AAAAA foe Campbell, 75-72, and wrap up regular-season play by hosting No. 4 Wheeler Friday.
Rank our rankings: Who’s in YOUR top 10? And who should move up (or out) of the AJC Metro Top 10? Let us know.

I think we will learn a lot about Centennial tonight by the way they play against Lassiter. Lassiter has surprise a lot of people this year. And remember only four teams from each region will go on to the state championship tournament. And region 6 has at least 6 good teams that are capable of winning and moving on. So 2 teams will not make it to the state tournament.
Does anyone know how region 6 handles their regional tournament? Does the best record team get a bye to the semi finals like region 7 or do you have to earn your spot in the regional to move on?
I think that the ajc has it right over the Gasports coach’s rankings which places centennial at the top. I don”t understand why the coaches think that Centennial has earned the right to be #1.

the description of centennial doesn’t say that they scored 100 for the first time in school history maybe that’s why they are #1 and they are the only team to beat wheeler AT wheeler since 2002.
also the region 6-AAAAA tournament has the top 3 teams from each sub-region get a first round bye, but the top team from each side gets to play either a 4 or 5 seed while 2 and 3 seeds play each other in the second round.
one more thing 61-59 06-07 champs should be centennial norcross paid refs

To the Dutchtown High School boys basketball team, you fought hard all year; and everyone that played you, knew that they were in a game! And Kellan Holiday (a sophomore) you finshed strong scoring 27 points against Forest Park. I can’t wait until next season!

Went to Centennial vs. Lassiter last night. Interesting game won by Centennial 63-54. I’ve seen Lassiter 5 times this year and it was a typical Lassiter game where they try to make a game against a more talented team slower and a little “sloppy” and “ugly” to keep the score low and the game close (it was 26-25 at half) in order to hang around and win in the end.
As far as Reg. 6’s brackets go,a fairly clear picture is emerging. It is probable that two of the following three won’t make it: Walton, Milton and/or Campbell. Campbell(A4), assuming they beat a very weak B5 in Round 1, will probably go out having to play Centennial(B1)in Round 2. Also in Round 2, Milton(B2) and Walton(A2) draw each other as their first game and one team will go out there. Region 6 will most likely send Centennial, Wheeler, Lassiter and either Milton or Walton to the state tournamant. In what order? Who knows. Lassiter, Milton and Walton can win any given game, Centennial is talented with notable weaknesses and the Wheeler team, thought the most talented, hasn’t played with a lot of discipline and it times has been terribly let down by two of their “stars” in some intersting ways.
If there is an opportunity for a HUGE surprise that will affect the state situation it is the Rd. 2 Centennial/Campbell game. Campbell matches up well and pushed Centennial to the limit in their one regular season game, losing 96-94 in OT. If this were to happen, Centennial would be out. Note that Wheeler draws a MUCH, MUCH weaker opponent in Round 2 in the Round 1 winner of B4 vs. A5.

Redan has only lost 3 games in their region and can’t get any love…the AJC and it fans suck! Every year it’s the same ole players getting love as if no other players or school in GA is having a great year…you need to stop being so bias. GA is loaded with D1 players going to D1 colleges……pit-ti-ful!

G-Dawg,how do you think we feel at Stephenson High.We have a 14 game winning streak, have not lost since Dec.27th,(last year)are No.1 in our region(15-2)and our last 2 loses came against the No.2 and No.8 ranked teams in Tennessee.(Raleigh-Egypt,and Ridgeway)Yet the writer of this article would have me beleive that 5 of the top 10 teams are in Cobb Co. Now I must say they DO have quality programs, but there are enough quality squads throughout METRO ATLANTA that you don’t have to be such a “HOMER”.I’m sorry, for me there just ain’t enough room for a team that is third in their region to be in the TOP TEN…period. Secondly, research is key.Returning players are always the key to a programs success and or failure.Had this columnist researched he would have found that Stephenson has one of the most potent backcourts in Metro Atlanta if not in the state. And last but not least,we are located in Metro Atlanta! And even schools such as Newnan should at least get a nod because of their body of work this season. Cmon dude, get this sh*t right. You got me thinkin’ that you’re “Cut Buddies”wit those coaches in Cobb.

To everyone in the general Redan / Stephenson area…
Please shut up.
If you had halfway COMPETENT coaches that would take the minuscule time and effort it takes to update www.gasports.com regularly then you wouldn’t have to whine about “respect”.
And loses to Luella and scoring THIRTY-NINE points in a varsity basketball game don’t exactly command respect.

Scoutofthehyear, Southatlanta fan and Big O u guys are so misinformed about the Columbia Eagles. Favors is the Big Dawg dont get me wrong.I love the kids game and he is the best in the land. After that guys, everything is suspect? Dont forget legendary Coach McCrary set us up in tourneys across the country with teams that had more than 3 dominate bigs on their Squad. That being said Forget who u beat by 20 or 30 in that weak region over there, u still gonna have to play a team thats well coached and balanced,u will have to face a Coach and a team that knows what it take to win the Big One!!! Something the kids and the program over there have never experienced All that ESPN stuff is out the window now!!!!! McEachern 101 remember that?? Take away those weak guards, pressure Malone allnite because he is streaky(Chris Grier), Big D gone get his. We Got a Ball game Gentleman!!!! Meet me at the concession stands Popcorn on me!!!

I have seen Walton play on multiple occasions (6) as a fan this season as just an on looker (no formal connection to the team) and I must say they are the most un-disciplined, cry baby, unsportsmanlike team and players I have ever seen play high school basketball. Their coach should be ashamed. They do not play defense, run their mouths to officials, and antics like taking a flop drawing a foul were met with doing pushups on the court. Mouthing off to the opposing student body, other parents, and cussing also are unbelievable. Walton should be ashamed and the administrators should be ashamed as well. Ryan Hollow (guard) and the center are the exception. Glen Rice Jr. is a terrible sportsman, never seen anyone so crass ever play. The fact they have 2 division signee’s and have lost so many games points directly to how poorly they are coached and how they are not a team. Rice Jr. I predict will NOT play at GA Tech. He is simply immature and does NOT play any form of defense. Walton is a disgrace as far as I have seen. The coach has no control over the players and I have not seen him one time teach or tell the players their behavior is terrible. These players do not get the one lesson in life about sports, it is always about who wins and having class should be taken as a lesson in life.

I still don’t get your top 10 rankings. Miller Grove is number 5 even though they crushed Centennial by 16,beat S. Atl in preseason by 9, and lost one game in state. Meanwhile you have bunch of teams with 6 and 7 losses in your top 10. I think you need to look past your AAAAA picks at the bottom. Really, how many marque wins does Milton have??
