Georgia High School Basketball: The AJC Top 10 Metro Atlanta all-classification poll
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
It proved to be another tough week for boys teams in the AJC’s Metro Top 10 with five taking losses, two to unranked opponents. Lassiter, who defeated No. 10 Hillgrove, moved into the top 10 at No. 7. But the Trojans face No. 10 Walton and No. 4 Wheeler before the weekend.
There are still plenty of undefeated girls teams left in metro Atlanta. But that’s no cause to start handing out championships.
“They don’t give you a championship for going undefeated in the regular season,” Fayette County coach John Strickland said. “You have to go undefeated in the postseason.”
The Tigers could do both. They’re still at No. 2 in our poll and seem on a course for a matchup with unbeaten Mays to end the regular season. Southwest DeKalb, the Tigers 2008 Class AAAA title-game opponent, is moving up as well after an impressive string of victories. Buford, who continues to roll in Class AA, joins the list.
BOYS: Metro Atlanta Basketball Rankings
A look at the top 10 metro teams from all classifications:
1: South Atlanta (17-3) — The Hornets crushed three Region 4-AAA foes by an average of 41 points, including a 29-point shellacking of second-place Spalding.
2: Norcross (17-1) — The Blue Devils took over the second spot by crushing Florida’s top-ranked Class AAAA team, Monsignor Pace, to complete an impressive week.
3: McEachern (15-3) — The Indians continued their rampage through Region 5-AAAAA with three double-figure victories, including one over second-place Cherokee County.
4: Wheeler (13-6) — The Wildcats ran past top-notch Region 6-AAAAA opponents Walton and Milton. Next up is Friday’s showdown against Lassiter.
5: Miller Grove (17-3) — The Wolverines were upset by Lakeside-Dekalb and now travel to improving Marist on Tuesday.
6: Centennial (15-2) — The Knights squeaked past dangerous Roswell last Friday and will be heavily favored this week against Region 6-AAAAA foes Alpharetta and Kell.
7: Lassiter (15-3) — The Trojans continue to be one of the state’s surprise stories and give Region 6-AAAAA its fifth ranked team.
8: Milton (13-5) — The Class AAAAA Eagles followed a blowout victory against Alpharetta by being dominated by Wheeler. Next up is rematch with archrival Roswell Tuesday.
9: Columbia (17-2) — The Eagles rolled past Region 6-AAA foes Dunwoody and Cedar Grove and now face second place Druid Hills on Tuesday.
10: Walton (13-6) — The Raiders hopes of taking second behind Region 6-AAAAA-A leader Wheeler will be decided this week with games against Lassiter and Campbell.
GIRLS: Metro Atlanta Basketball Rankings
A look at the top 10 metro teams from all classifications:
1: Parkview (18-0) — The Class AAAAA Panthers finally got a close game with a 54-49 victory against Central Gwinnett on Friday.
2: Fayette County (20-0) — John Strickland’s team is still rolling, posting a 47-8 Class AAAA victory against Starr’s Mill last week.
3: Mays (20-0) — Junior guard Kendra Long got her 1,000th career point last week for Class AAAA Mays.
4: Redan (13-0) — The Class AAAAA Raiders have a tough stretch of four consecutive road games coming up.
5: Westlake (16-1) — No one will seemingly be able to hang with the Class AAAAA Lions until the postseason. Westlake scored 80-plus points in its last two, while holding opponents to 18 and 25 points.
6: Wesleyan (17-3) — The Class A Wolves have won 10 in a row behind senior Anne Marie Armstrong, who is averaging 22 points, seven rebounds, four assists and 3.5 steals a game.
7: Southwest DeKalb (17-3) — The Class AAAA Panthers have won 10 in a row, with no opponent getting closer than 23 points.
8: Norcross (14-4) — The Class AAAAA Blue Devils are only dropping because other teams are making stronger cases. Norcorss gets that chance on Jan. 30 against Mill Creek.
9: Marist (17-2) — Kim Hixon’s Class AAAA team still hasn’t lost a game in Georgia and has strung together nine in a row.
10: Buford (15-1) — The Class AA Wolves make their first poll appearance after winning their 14th game in a row.
Rank the rankings: How do our Metro top 10 stack up against yours? Which teams are we overlooking? Who’s really got game and who’s got lame?

Thank you ajc for doing your homework before you place your votes. It is obvious that the coaches vote did not reflect what had happened over the weekend. If so they would not have voted to keep centennial as the no.1 team in 5A. I think that your ranking of Centennial at no.6 is more reflective of their current performance which appears to be on a decline.
With six excellent region six teams (wheeler, lasiter, milton, campbell, walton and centennial) and only four teams are able to advance to the state tournament, we could see several big upsets in the region 6 regional tournament.

Walton should not be ranked in the Top 10, nor the Top 50 in the state of Georgia. Granted, they lost to a good Lassiter team last night. However that team is a joke, led by Glen Rice Jr who is the biggest joke of Georgia High School Basketball. He is suppossed to be ACC talent? I think he had nine points last night, which did not include a shot. His nine points came from a couple of free throws and a couple of dunks. Best of all, to start the third quarter, HE was scored on for four straight times by a Lasiter player who can’t play college ball on any level. Had it not been for a back door missed layup after Rice tried to go for a steal, it would have been 10 straight points to open up the second half. Also, he was constantly bending over and grabbing his shorts as if he was tired. “Hey Glen,….ITS HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL!!!” The only question I have now is, where will Glen transfer to after a year at Georgia Tech. Their was a Lagrange College coach their last night, perhaps that would be a more suitable place for Glen. Mark it down, Walton does not make state.

Ok R.Morton, here are my add-ons to your latest metro(boys)poll. First let me get more than an honorable mention for Newnan High. They are 15-1 and just lost their first game this week. They are an experienced squad led by a solid point guard Russell Powell. They were ousted in the first round of the state tourney last season but seem to be ready to take the next step. I’m willing to take Stephenson High over your 6,7,8,and 10 picks.Stephenson is 15-5 and on a 10 game win streak, have key wins over Campbell(13-5) Rockdale(16-6)and Redan(11-5) The Jaguars are led by 6’5 G/F Adrian Coleman,”a hired assassin”that averages 31 ppg.(no it’s not a misprint)Yes I said “THIRTY ONE PER GAME”.I sit here and listen to all the talk about the usual suspects that yall say are ballin’. I know what you’re thinkin…a one man show.Nope, wrong again.Got the point guard(a true point) Kevin Dukes who runs the squad and can flat out shoot that thang. And if I’m not mistaken has led the conference in assists the last three years. But please, don’t take my word for it.Ask a Redan fan,a Pebblebrook fan,or a Campbell fan. Recently friend of mine overheard me talkin’ about Adrian Coleman and ask me to to decribe his game in four words.I paused a second then said,”HE WILL SCORE THIRTY”!! Please follow-up on this info

Walton was out-coached. I am very dissapointed in their coach. They clearly have some talent (far more than lassiter) but have no coach. They try to play like wheeler, the only problem is… they are NOT Wheeler. They have been playing like that ever since Goydish has been coaching there. (even before they got the athletes they have now)
Last night, Lassiter reminded me of the old walton teams coached by Joe Wilson that competed with, and beat, teams who were far more talented than they were.

I have seen Walton play three times this year and in all three games they were defeated. I saw them lose at Centenniel 91-90 in a game that would have almost certainly been won if Goydish had called a time out with a one point lead and a couple of seconds left to set up a defense to stop Centenniel’s last second basket made by hectically inbounding and passing across the full length of the court. I saw them lose at Wheeler 106-95 because they tried for 32 minutes to beat Wheeler at Wheeler’s game on a night when it was clear from the outset that Wheeler was “on”. And, I saw the sad spectacle last night at Lassiter with an abundance of headless, sloppy play producing over 30 TOs. So three games lost three different ways all of which could be attributed to three different types of coaching lapses. I regret the observation because I happen to like Goydish.

Why can’t we have separate region rankings? This is why basketball doesn’t have a chance in this state. Even the local newspaper can’t even rank the metro schools by region!!

Even a blind man could see SOMEONE has a ridiculous bias for Wheeler. COME ON!! Do you think we are idiots??
Wheeler doesn’t belong in these rankings with 6 loses against 13 wins AT ALL, much less in the top 5.
All you are doing is lowering your own credibility and making yourself and the AJC look like fishwrap.
Get your head out of your A$$ you biased piece of “krap”

This is for coaches… now hear this. Pope beat Roswell and Roswell was three points from beating Centennial and Miller Grove beat Centennial like a drum. So please explain why you voted to keep Centennial in 1st. for 5A?????????????????????

Just Nasty and Mean:
Stealin your thunder a bit here BUDDY…………but look at those five loses. Centennial——ok. One for You. Mater Dei———-Top 5, if not the Number ONE team in the nation, out of California. Play around 10 nationally ranked opponents. One for me. Winter Grove———Nationally ranked team, just happens to be equipped with sophomore Austin Rivers, the number one player in the class of 2011. Two for me. St. Patricks————top 5 team in the nation. Excuse the language, but one hell of a great basketball team. Richard Howell, our only true big man, was hurt. Its difficult to win when you cant rebound. Three for me. St. Benedicts——-at the time (MLK Day), they were the number 22 team in the nation. We traveled over 1000 miles to get there, and played without heart the entire game. Still, a national team. Four for me.
Lets tally up the final score, if your critical mind can do basic math. Me——-four. You———one. Four is bigger than one. (they teach you this in KINDERGARTEN, btw). Therefore, I win. If anything, we deserve to be ranked higher. There is such a thing called strength of schedule. Know what you are talking about before you call out Wheeler and the Wildcat Nation.
GO WHEELER!

Mean and Nasty, thats borderline the most ignorant thing i have read on these blogs….have you ever even seen wheeler play? surely not because of what you posted…wheelers national schedule this year has been absurd with the ranked teams they have played….in the last 10 days, they have easily beaten walton, milton, and tonight they let lassiter hang around, but pulled away in the 4th when they began to play wheeler basketball…those 3 teams are ranked in the top 10 in this metro poll

Oh Boo Hoo! “Wheeler would have won if the schedule wasn’t so HARD” Boo Hoo! But the schedule is (snivel, snivel—) HARD! Boo Hoo! We could have won, but we lost 6 times—Boo Hoo!
What a bunch of whiners.
Predlpredll—Do the friggin math. Centennial has beaten Wheeler, has a better Win/Loss, and STILL ranked well below. Get out your slide ruler on that—dip$hit.
I don’t have a dog in this hunt either way….but…
It is clear, the writer of this article and whoever did these rankings have bought into your Wheeler’s whiner crap like a dog on slop.
Go feed your excuse-laden weener crap on your mommie. She’ll make you feel better. In the meantime—-you’re still full of $hip and eating your own line of BS.

I don’t give a rat’s a$$ how old you are. You still haven’t answered my direct question on how ANYONE can justify putting Wheeler, a team with 3 times the losses—-AND—-has lost to a team ranked 3 spots lower than them.
My other point is: You Wheeler fans are a bunch of excuse-laden crybabies. Boo-Hoo!! We have an excuse for ALL 6 of our loses that are not our fault! BooHoo!
go tell your mommy to stick your lollipop up her black A$$—along with her belt.
Grow up whiner. …or shut up.

first off, B***. I am white. dont make stereotypical racist comments. i know people who, if you had the balls to identify yourself, would enjoy beating you to a pulp. second off, if you dont get why i put my age, dont bother. third off, all of the loses are our fault. fourth off, before i make MY point, look at college hoops. Duke lost to the university of michigan, but duke is still ranked higher. do you hear michigan fans or duke haters “BOOHOO”ing about this? no, you dont. its because duke is better. Wheeler is a better team than Centennial. Yes, centennial won in the head-to-head. i get that. But Wheeler is better. if lorenzo brown goes down, and i hope he doesnt, centennial is not a great team. if richard howell goes down, or ari stewart, or any of our other guys, we could still compete with the best this state has to offer. Wheeler is ranked higher than the Lorenzo Browns because wheeler, in the long run, is a better team. and stop slamming my school. you can slam the team all you want, their play will answer. but dont slam my school, and therefore my friends.

PredlPredll, I’m inclined to side with u on this one.Let me say first and foremost that I am not a Wheeler fan nor am I associated with Wheeler High. However I am here to tell you that Coach D.Lipscomb is not a joke in this coachin’ game.He purposely schedules tough games for this very reason, and it has brought huge success to their program.
Folks may forget, but this same conversation comes up EVERY YEAR involving Wheeler and somebody else. But it’s always Wheeler in the conversation.Truth be told, their program is only one, maybe two championships from being a legitimate “Dynasty” in Georgia High School Basketball. In fact since Shareefs’sophomore year at Wheeler, it has been(in region play)Wheeler, then EVERYONE ELSE.
So Walton,Centennial,Lassiter, and whomever(Campbell does have a very good young nucleus)need to just wait till the coast is clear, then make a move. But what ever you do…don’t wake a “Sleepin’ Giant”
