Georgia High School Basketball: Too early to start thinking state tourney?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Journal-Constitution basketball writers Glenn LaFollette and Rob Morton broke down how some of the metro area’s big-name squads fared in various December holiday tournaments and it’s clear that the state tournament should be quite lively if the teams profiled advance to the playoffs in a couple of months.
Are you already thinking about which metro and state basketball teams - boys and girls - have the best shot at contending for state titles? Who are the squads that have looked most impressive so far this season? Let us know.

Guys side, Centennial is on fire and Lorenzo Brown is a player. I am hoping and looking forward to a **Norcross-Centennial REMATCH somewhere in the playoffs this season.
Milton is on point right now, but their coach is one of the best in the state so it was only time…
South Atlanta and Derrick Favors are absolutely filthy. They tore it up in Indiana over the holidays. These two teams are top notch.
There are some solid girls teams this season. Parkview looks hot in AAAAA. Watch out for Norcross. With transfers and their top notch coach, they will only get better this season. Look for them to go deep in state.
Smaller metro teams for guys have some solid teams Greenforest, Whitefield, and Paidea in A. GAC and Blessed Trinity are really tough right now in AA and have given some top notch teams trouble.
Too bad we do not play GAC this year. That is a rivalry game that I will miss. There were more than 2500 fans at all three games played against them last year. Region Championships were standing room only.

**WELL IT IS TIME FOR BASKETBALL TO TAKE THE BIG STAGE AND THIS YEAR SHOULD BE ANOTHER OUTSTANDING YEAR.
HERE ARE SOME OF THE BIG QUESTIONS THAT NEED TO BE ANSWERED IN.**
WILL SOUTH ATLANTA FINAL WIN A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP? LET HOPE SO WITH THE TALENT IT HAS.
WILL WHEELER STEP UP THIS YEAR AND WIN THE BIG ONE WHICH HAS ELUDED THEM FOR THE PAST THREE YEARS?
CAN NORCROSS DO SOMETHING THAT HAS BEEN DONE A BY 5A TEAM IN GA…WIN FOUR STRAIGHT STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS?
CAN CENTENNIAL WIN THEIR FIRST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP FOR LORENO BROWN IN HIS LAST YEAR?
CAN MILTON OR WALTON SURPRISE THE DOMINENT USUAL PROGRAM TO GET TO THE FINAL DANCE?
CAN MCEACHERN WHO IS BEING PICKED BY MOST TO WIN IT ALL THIS YEAR KEEP ITS FOCUS THROUGH THE FINAL GAME?
I GUESS WE WILL JUST HAVE TO WAIT AND SEE.

I believe Walton will be in the running at the end of the season. It is my opinion having graduated from Walton in 81’ and followed the Raiders all these years that this years team is the most talented in school history. Just watched them score 100 tonight and they have some skills.
I don’t want to exclude anyone because I have only seen the team play once this year, but Ryan Harrow is the energizer rabbit and I only wish Ga Tech had this high school junior on their team right now. I have no connection to him other than my alumni status, but this young man is a thrill to watch. I will leave it at that.
Of course Glen Rice is as advertised and looks like a real winnner, but I went to see him play and ended up getting excited watching Harrow. There was a standing ovation for Harrow on one of his 2nd half shots that I must say was one of the prettiest and smoothest maneuvers and lay-up through thick line of defenders I have ever seen.
Walton has a nice point guard too and he can put down the threes if someone isn’t in his face.
They may not be a state Champion in the making, but they make this alum proud and I am going to expect to see them among the top 5-10 teams in AAAAA.

Northgates girls basketball team is on the rise and are very good. After years of pain, Coach Trucks has them on the move. The boys program has yet to have a winning season in eight years. Fans want change but Admin. loves the coach. Kids continue to suffer.

Here are my picks for 5A State Champions. The champion will most likely come from the first group however don’t count out the second group.
First group: Centennial, McEachern or Wheeler
Second group: Walton, Norcross or Milton
For Norcross to win their fourth straight championship, which has not been done at the 5A level before, they will probably have to beat either wheeler or centennial in the qtr finals after beating Walton or Milton in the second rd.

Mays being overlooked is an understatement. A state championship, then a final four, then an elite eight, now undefeated. The boys is just as much impressive, but still no ink! Politics!!! Who are their players? Who are the coaches? There has to be talent there!!! I’ve seen every division play from A to AAAAA this year on the boys and girls side. What took so long for this thread?!! We’re halfway through the season. As far as jc is concerned, you don’t enjoy fundamentals, just the oohs and ahhhs!

The Mays Lady Raiders won last night so now they are 16-0! They have lots of talent from the point guard to the post players. They just have what it takes, in my opinion. It seems like they have a new coaching staff also. The boys are quite impressive also.

GAC and Blessed Trinity are really tough right now in AA BUT they have nothing for Dublin. Dublin is 12 deep, plays full-court defense the entire game and shoots the 3 better than any team I have seen in a while. They have won all but 2 games by 25 points or better. The only loss of the season was to Collins Hills in the Kreul Classic in Florida. They beat the best team in Florida’s highest classification in this tournament. The AJC did absolutely no coverage on this tournament which was surprising since Collins Hills was in the tournament and won it. Also when will the AJC rankings come out. It is January. It is okay to put Dublin # 3 because you want to rank GAC and Blessed Trinity 1 & 2. We will show you in Macon who number #1 is. GO IRISH!!!!

Like football, Region 6-AAAA is the toughest in the state. Top-Ranked Miller Grove, led by Mfon Udofia, point guard Malcolm Frank and 6-foot-8 freshman sensation Toney Parker, is the cataylst of a competitive Region with No. 2 Tucker and the state sleeper Marist-which upset Tucker on Friday-not far behind. The rest of AAAA is a toss-up. Somebody, however, will step up. In AAA, South Atlanta, is the favorite, but you cannot sleep on DEFENDING CLASS AAAA STATE CHAMPION COLUMBIA. Yes, they lost Travis Leslie, but the Eagles, ranked No.2 in the state with a 13-1 record are coached by one of the state’s top coaches. Coaching is going to win the title. Bottom line, Columbia wins the big games. When was the last time South Atlanta won a big game???

TURNER COUNTY HAS EVERYTHING TO SAY ABOUT THAT WILCO. WHO ELSE IN THE STATE IS ALLOWING ONLY 41 POINTS PER GAME? DON’T LOOK FORWARD TO ADVANCING TO STATE BUB. THAT GOES FOR HANCOCK TOO BY THE WAY.

Is there a state ranking for basketball? I know it is a matter of opinion and I am just curious. Valdosta has a decent team for the south georgia area, when we get to Macon or Atlanta then we can see what we really have. Jay Rome and company are not bad at all.

Valdosta is undefeated and is beating teams by at least 30 points a night. They have some excellent players and will be tough to beat.

dnt forget about Turner County 2A-A. They are still looking good enough to beat any team out there right now. They have went 121-14 in the last 4yrs with, 4 tourney app., 2final fours, and state runner ups 2007-2008. They have all but two returning players on there team. Turner County Rebels led by JR Chris Spears C 6-8 and SR Tray Pearce SG 6-5, is on a 15 game winnin streak w/ a record of 16-1. Look for them to return to the finals again 2008-2009 to gain redemtion.

South Atlanta is good with the Big Man but dont count out Columbia Eagles. They have one of the most slept on Guards in the country in 6’5 Jershon Cobb averaging 21pts 6 assist and 6 rebounds. In addition to Cobb they have one of the states top freshman in 6’4 Jordan Price 17pts (remember his name).Columbia will definately be there in the end of the 2009 season. Columbia and South Atlanta in state championship game!!!

Turner County is one of the best teams in Class A we have some of the best guards in state Ternell Davis averaged 24ppg and Tray Pierce at 6’5 present problems for alot of their opponents. Wilco and Hancock-Central don’t crown yourself to early the Championship is going through Turner County.
