Desmond Walker from Mays High School…….?
By Todd Holcomb
December 22, 2008 12:56 PM | Link to this
Desmond Walker had 1,215. Walker was limited to 10 games because Mays missed the playoffs, and I believe I heard that he missed a game or two injured. If it were yards-per-game, Walker would be pretty high.

Recv’ing should be average yard/catch. That’s just a bogus number. My .02.

Don’t know if I’ll have time to compute that. Might go back and do total receiving yardage. It’s true that it’s easy to catch a lot of passes these days w/ the spread offense and not necessary get a bunch of yards.

I like to see receivers that can run after they catch the ball, that all. Thanks for your input, as always.

Who will be the offensive player of the year for Georgia????
By Todd Holcomb
December 22, 2008 8:27 PM | Link to this
Thanks, AG. My Pemberton numbers were through 13 games. He’s updated. I also added Brandon Jacobs of Parkview, who had about 1,570.
Who will be the offensive player of the year for Georgia????
Find out Sunday in the AJC. The Georgia Sportswriters Association all-state team will be released Thursday.
Also, there is no one offensive player of the year. There is one OPOY per classification. We will have an all-class player of the year, but he may be an offensive or a defensive player.

I don’t see the big deal on this, It only means these boys were chosen by their coaches to carry the ball more, it doesn’t mean no one else on the team could not have done the same or better. You have to look at the all around picture.

We’re not trying to make a point about who the best players are. These are just statistics, the same that you’d see in the NFL or the NCAA. They’re interesting. Nothing more than that. But I’d have to disagree in most cases with this statement: It only means these boys were chosen by their coaches to carry the ball more. Why are the coaches choosing for these players to carry the ball more? Because they are their team’s best runners, throwers or receivers, in most cases.

Todd:
Where did Sean Frezell (Meadowcreek) wind up? I saw him throw for something like 470 against South Gwinnett and he had thrown for 400+ a couple of weeks earlier. Hard to believe he didn’t top 2,00, even with the Mustangs’ dismal season.

I see Xavier Bacon on the list for rushing yards. This kid deserves to be all state. Bacon carried Northside WR. on offense. He played tough competition week in and week out. Without Bacon Northside likely would have lost more games. This kid may not have had the most yards but NSWR needed every yard and TD he got. Xavier Bacon ALLSTATE RUNNING BACK.

Did Dunwoody’s Treavor Scales not reach 1500 yds rushing? I’m pretty sure he was close.

Great players in single and double A should have higher statistics. How would they fair against 5A competition? In my opinion, the Bacon kid from Northside is the best back in the State.I am sure there are great players in lower classifications. I saw Mack Strong play in High School. He was a awesome back that put up outstanding numbers but his competition was really bad. Strong would have been a great back in 5A but I do not think his stats would be as impressive. The fact is, players like strong, champ and others would certainly lead the State with stats due to inferior comp. Would the players be able to excel as well in higher classifications?

Kyle Karempelis actually had 1902 rushing yards on the season… 1778 was before the state championship game.

I have no problem with Greg Reid as player of the year, but XAVIER BACON certainly deserved to be on the All-State team, and a finalist in the top 12 for player of the year. Whenever Northside rushed the football, 99% of the time it was Bacon with the ball. Everybody in the stadium knew who would carry the ball, and most of the time they couldn’t stop him. I guess the AJC sports department finally did.

Great players like Reid have been squandered before. The real enabler for such a talent is great coaching. There is no better coach anywhere than Randy McPherson and his coaching with Reid’s talent has made the winning combination.

Hey VIKE69, I have to agree with you on that one. Coach McPherson is a great coach. He seems to but the winning combination together each season. As far as BACON goes i have to agree with NHS that he surely deserves to be on the All-State team. That guy is a monster. Just want to say congrats to Reid and the rest of The Lowndes Vikings for another great season. We didn’t quite reach our goal this season, but you all know we will be back.

Are you sure about that number on passing yards for Hutson Mason? It cannot be right. It is 1500 yards more than the AJC AAAAA All-State QB. I am sure this cannot be right!

Columbia blue how can you say that there numbers would be not as impressive. If you are good you should be good regardless of the circumstances. In fact Strong went on to have a good career at GA and with the Seahawks before an injury forced him to retire after 14 years in the leauge.

To Columbia blue: You say that the backs in the lower classifications play against inferior competition. How ridiculous!! Are you saying that none of the higher classification teams are weak? The good backs in the lower classes would excel no matter where they were playing. Besides that, if your theory is correct, they would be playing behind a better offensive line if they played in a higher classification. By the way, have you heard of Hershel Walker, Garrison Hearst, Champ Bailey, Etc? They all played in class A ball!! It sounds to me like you are a dumba—!

You obviously have serious issues with your judgment or are on the take. Neither of which are acceptable and I doubt the later. Your decision to not make Hutson Mason your 1st Team All State tells me volumes about your judgement. “NO ONE” who covers or writes seriously about HS Football this season could come to the conclusion you made, “no one”. Hutson threw for 1500 yards more than Tamburo and had at least 10 more TD’s and a higher completion rate. He lead his team a 3-7 team (2007) to the 2nd round of the playoffs and a 9-3 record, beating 3 “top 10” teams along the way. He matched Tamburo a senior, yard for yard in their head to head and outplayed him in the 7 on 7 passing tournament all the way back in the summer. You make a mockery of the award and their is no excuse for your lack of knowledge. Explain how a player who missed the all time single season Georgia state passing record by 5 yards did not get your 1st team QB! Second thought, don’t, your answer would be just as idiotic! What a travesty, Only the ajc! Jim, Marietta 770-424-7525

I think I agree with bobbylee. Don’t get me wrong I think the number of catches these kids were able to accumulate are outstanding to say the least. If a receiver has 30 receptions for 612 yards and 10 touchdowns is he more productive than a receiver with 55 catches for 427 and 5 touchdowns? That debate could go on forever.
