Go Camden, play with class and lets keep the title down south.

THE ONLY WAY THE SOUTH GA SCHOOLS CAN COMPETE WITH THE NORTH GA SCHOOLS IS TO HAVE ONLY 2 HIGH SCHOOLS IN ONE COUNTY,LIKE CAMDEN COUNTY,LET COUNTIES LIKE COBB DEKALB GWINNETT FULTON AND BARTOW HAVE 2 HIGH SCHOOLS IN THE COUNTY AND SOUTH GA WOULD NEVER WIN ANOTHER STATE TITLE.

Yes, both of today’s games are on GPTV. In fact, all of this weekend’s finals will be broadcast on GPTV.

That’s even more reason to keep this forum nice and lively as we all follow the action together.

Live from the Georgia Dome, we are 8 minutes from kickoff and I will be here to blog with you as we go through the Calhoun-Buford game. Just looking around the Dome, Calhoun has significantly more people here, not that that will mean anything. Calhoun has the puncher’s chance, but you gotta think Buford takes care of bidness in this one. I’ll be here throughout the game, so if you have questions, shoot them my way.

Not exactly the best start for Calhoun. Two possession, an interception and one play for positive yardage. The Jackets have to play better than this. 7-0 Buford

That’s better for the Jackets. A score and a stop and now they have a chance to take the lead. But Calhoun has to establish more than just the homerun threat.

A little more impressed with Calhoun’s D than what i had been led to believe. Of course, all we hear about is that offense for the Jackets, but after they gave up 35 to Brooks, I wasn’t expecting what I have seen through a quarter.

Tucker 8 Marist 3 3:42 left, both teams 2 timeouts & Tucker Marist 32 yard line & 3rd & 9. Tucker looks to win but is a big play away fro a tie. They make 1st down to Marist 16. Marist is playing hard but just has missed one great interception chance & isn’t quite as good as Tucker. I’m surprised score so low.

Hey Chris, back on that comment about the yardage markers. Just what is the rule? Is the stick supposed to be at the back of the ball on 1st down, or at the front? I’ve seen it both ways and wondered. Congrats to Tucker and Buford! Although Camden beat us last week and traditionally you like to see the team that beat you win, I’m thinking Peachtree Ridge will perservere, esp. if they can slow down the Cats awesome running game. Good luck to all teams tomorrow!

Hey Chris, back on that comment about the yardage markers. Just what is the rule? Is the stick supposed to be at the back of the ball on 1st down, or at the front? I’ve seen it both ways and wondered.

You are supposed to measure from the tip of the ball at the front. That is why when there is a touchback the very front of the ball is at the 20. You don’t set it smack dab on the line.

By Bodog

December 12, 2008 11:49 PM | Link to this

Todd & Chris, The only problems i see is that playing in the dome takes all the tradition that high school football has had over many years…Even if you count the largest crowd at final tomorrow in the dome you will still have approx 50,000 empty seats….You can’t dispute that. I feel like there are several neutral fields in Georgia that could handle any classification football game that will be played…..The real sport of playing football is not inside ..72 degree monster dome. If that is true then why don’t GHSA have all football regular season games in ideal conditions…..rediculious!!!!

Tucker is a good team but that Dvais kid is a horrible sport.coach shoudl have taken him out of the game when he started arguing with the other teams coaches.Players like him make people not like his team so don’t say he is grest.he has a bad attitude and the coach has no control.not that I like Marist too much either, though.

A couple of thought from the dome. First, Buford has good players but the thing I saw from them is they play hard for the entire play (cost them a couple of times in penalties for late hits). That is a well coached team. On the other hand, Tucker won because it had very good players.Their coach is very disorganized coach. I do not understand how this can be the 15 game of the year and you still have the number of substitution problems they had. Time management was awful. One sequence, he is 3rd and 5 at the Marist 30 in the second quarter. One time out. Can’t get the play in, gets a 5 yard penalty, Then he can’t get the play in again and wastes the time out to decide to punt. Fortunately the kids put together a great drive in the fourth quarter to put the game away. Tucker coach, you owe the players that one. As far as the games in the Dome, I think that is where it should be. This is the big time for these kids and it deserves the biggest stage.

I TiVo-ed the first game because I had to work and just got through it. It was a long game with lots of scoring, big plays and big penalties that happened to both teams. Tivo speeds it along! Getz is a beast (though a little one) and Buford is tough on O and D. I thought the refs kept good control because there was some hitting going on. The best team won and now I am gonna watch Tucker-Marist.

Saw two great games this evening!!!! Buford was just toooo much for Calhoun….Calhoun played great at first but Buford had too much SIZE up front!! That lil running back, who is very tuff and fast got behind dem big ole lineman and had a field day.

Tucker’s defense was awesome and they were effecient on offense….but you can’t take nothing away from Marist….they are a fine, well coached football team!!! Oh, and they were big as hell too…LOL!!! I see why UGA hasn’t offered Davis yet….He is a great athelete with a big motor….can’t deny that!!! I saw in person everyone’s concern about this kid….just too short!!! I might would take a chance on em, b/c he is a stud!!! Wow, if only he was a couple of inches taller, every D-1 college in the country would want him!! Oh yea, somebody needs to tell him to keep his helment on….likes to be seen a bit too much for me! As for #23, the LSU committ…got to put on some weight to compete in the rugged SEC, but a descent running back…just didn’t blow me away though!

Lastly, let me say this about the crowd: the people from Calhoun really do support their football team….WOW WHAT A CROWD!!!! They had more fans there tonight than the other schools who were all from metro Atlanta!! I was really suprised at Buford’s crowd…rather small, especially with them being so close!! Marist was second to Calhoun in fan support…great crowd but just not as large as Calhoun.

Hats off to Tucker for their win last night. Their overall team speed was the difference maker on the carpet at the Dome. That said (and not taking anything away from Tucker’s performance), I have one question… the officiating appeared to be as terrible as I have ever seen, was it as obvious on TV as it seemed to those of us watching it live at the dome? I felt that Replays on the big screen at the stadium confirmed the missed (ignored) calls. There were countless uncalled penalties that would have gone against Tucker, such as holding, pass interference, and even a taunting situation, all of which occured right in front of the officials. It’s a shame for that to occur in a championship game. I penalty flags were optional attire for the officials last night. Many of those “missed calls”were drive killers for Marist. It still might not have changed the outcome of the game had some of those penalties been marked-off, but it very likely would have been a less one-sided affair in the offensive statistics column.

I hope that the officiating is better for the three finals today. It certainly can’t get any worse than it was last night.

Gwinnett Daily post’s preview of the peachtree ridge-camden game: http://www.gwinnettdailypost.com/main.asp?SectionID=7&SubSectionID=7&ArticleID=53927&TM=409.742

Looking at this, it seems as if Camden County is almost identical to Grayson except for the fact that they have multiple running backs (Grayson uses Pemberton almost exclusively) With both teams having solid defenses and wing-t offenses, this game should look very similar to the Grayson game which we barely won 13-10. One advantage for PR, though - we have experience playing this kind of team from last week. notice how last week grayson scored a touchdown on the first drive and then never again? it took our defense some time to adjust to their offense, but his week there shouldn’t be any trouble with that.

Congrats to Tucker and Buford….Buford looked good on both sides…..Calhoun had no chance against Buford’s O-line…Offensively Calhoun looked decent , on defense, they need to tackle better……Tucker played very well , Game ball to the entire team .Solid play on both sides of the ball….Beck played a great game! ,Davis ,Scott and Calhoun as well..Tuckers 80 yard 4th qrt drive was the best ive seen all season from any team ive seen this year, squashed Marist’s Mo…..I didn’t see any thing wrong with the officiating,Marist complained about a couple calls that were called correctly by the refs….The kids tripped over each other positioning themselves for the ball ,it was not pass interference…..Running into the kicker was of the 5 yard variety…..Good officiating, hard hitting, turnover free ball…..SJP , clearly Tucker was the better team last night.

MEMO TO CHRIS WHITFIELD AND ALL OF THE OTHER AJC “REPORTERS”—Go back to school and learn what it means to be an objective reporter. Your first class will be on adequately researching your topic. Your unsatisfactory performance during this year’s playoffs proves you failed your previous courses. When you picked Marist to beat Tucker, it was obvious you think your job title is pep-ralley writer for the Marist website, NOT reporter for a newspaper that pretends to serve the entire south…You had no objective stats behind your pick, and in the days of the internet with access to pure compilations of data, you have NO excuse. I rest my case!

By TUCKER vs MARIST

December 13, 2008 10:23 AM | Link to this

Great game by two well coached teams. Both teams left it all on the field.

SJP - Your comments on penalties are noted, and probably hold some water (esp. the taunting, J Davis has been getting away with that stuff for a long time), but the old adage holds true. The calls even out. Marist has benefited from many a questionable referee’s call over the years.

AJC and TUCKER FANS I agree with SJP that speed on the perimeter was finally the difference. But the true difference maker in the game for Tucker was not Jonathan Davis, Drayton Calhoun, etc., etc., etc.

The difference maker was Chris Beck.

He kept the Marist D honest with his passing on key 3rd and 4th down plays, and was able to scramble Tucker out of trouble on several crucial occasions. He managed the game and made the key plays. Marist had to account for him and that opened up the flanks for the speed merchants. And they really didn’t burn Marist until late in the 4th quarter when their D got tired.

I heard the announcer on TV mention that Beck has a 3.9 GPA and that West Point is calling. Frankly, it’s a travesty that this kid isn’t getting more press from the AJC. He is the model that all high school student athletes should be striving for.

Truth.

Alright enough said about Tucker and Buford. Are yall ready for a showdown between north and south GA? Well first we have The Cairo Syrupmakers of Cairo Ga. A small town just north of Tallahasse FL, where we take pride in our highschool football. For all the debaters on wether north or south Ga plays better football, tune into GPTV at 5:00 today. All of your questions will be answered. Then you will know that south Ga football is for real. Second we have Camden County. Well I really don’t have to explain these guys. Well it’s just plain obvious that South Ga plays better highschool football.

Just heard Lowndes Football team and about 8,000 fans are on the way to the Dome. They will lay their case before the “people” because every poll in the nation say they were # 2 and should play Camden County in the finals of AAAAA. Also, Greg Reid promises to be nice and not to score more than 3 touchdowns. They ask Peachtree Ridge team not to show up to force a Lowndes -Camden game. Illnois Governor will refund PR from the money he receives from the open senate seat in his state. I will be in Florida tonight but please someone post the Lowndes-Camden County score. Lowndes really needs this win to extend their state championship run. They want to break Parkview HS’ record of three straight state championships in 2010 by having won four in a row. Please! I heard this from a Lowndes Fan so don’t attack me as the messager. LOL

Memo to Big Fan of 4A I think you could be more fair to Chris. He did cite the undeniably objective stat of Marist’s 38-0 win over Tucker earlier in the season and essentially called it a toss-up by saying that either Marist would win close or lose big http://www.ajc.com/blogs/content/shared-blogs/ajc/prepsports/entries/2008/12/index.html . He probably is not allowed much column space for piles of stats. Frankly, he may have been thinking also of Tucker’s LONG history of losses in the playoffs the last ten to fifteen years(I guess they’ve been good since ‘93 or thereabouts?), including the extreme disappointments of the past two years. In the end, Chris had to pick a team, and he notes that Tucker fans have been sending unhappy emails to him. By the way, I picked Tucker because of their impressive last season run and playoff wins and congratulate them on finally winning it all. Marist had a chance or two but overall did better than I expected. The better team won. Also, Glenn LaFollette of the AJC picked Tucker in the playoffs on Deccember 3.

I also noticed that Chris picked all three South GA teams to win today. I’m puzzled by your contention that the AJC “claims to serve the entire south.” There may be some such meaningless marketing phrase in the AJC somewhere (which I did not find on a brief search) but the AJC is clearly only a Metro Atlanta paper and in fact just announced that they are ceasing circulation in the outer Metro Atlanta counties, such as Dawson and Butts. So let’s be clear the AJC does not owe coverage to towns far outside of I-285 because that is not their market. I find that the AJC is consistently respectful in their rankings of teams outside Atlanta even though they have to show allegiance to their customer base. But those who still believe in an extreme bias really have to ask themselves if their own hometown newspaper is fair or even cares about the rest of the state. Maybe I should start hounding the Macon Telegraph or Valdosta Daily Times for some perceived unfair coverage or disrespect of Calhoun or Buford.

I do wish we could rise above the “who is better North or South GA” debate as it’s tiresome, somewhat meaningless, and too divisive. It’s clear that South GA has an edge(in football only), but we should all acknowledge that it’s a very competitive situation and not certain year to year who will win. That being said, I don’t know why some South GA fans keep bringing this up; it suggests inner doubt and a bit of insecurity. And North GA fans who bring this up don’t seem to have examined the records at GHSA.net that show that from the ‘98-‘07 seasons South GA teams won 28 titles and North GA teams won 20 titles. But really, if you want to talk geography then divide it into North GA, Middle GA, and South GA and see how messy it can get. Lord, I type this all out and wonder why I don’t spend my time on more productive things. But I’ll keep my eye on the TV anyway today……

When are some of you clowns going to stop fighting the civil war? Grow up. The north-south thing is stale, stale, stale, stale, stale. Cairo is a terrific football team and it has next to nothing to do with geography. I seem to recall that 2002-2003 were pretty lean years in Grady County. 2005 was nothing spectacular… pretty hard to explain if you’re trying to claim genetic superiority. Give it a rest.

Ben: If the purpose of Whitfield’s blog is simply to stir up comments, then I suppose he’s worth the money. But it doesn’t really require a whole lot of talent to throw a bunch of crap together each week so people can throw rocks at it. It’s hard to respect the opinion of someone who completely missed all the clues about Tucker down the stretch. If the first two playoff games didn’t wake him up, certainly the Westside victory should have. And then the total humiliation of Grffin should have been an exclamation point, but Chris continued to cling to the idea that the first Tucker-Marist was anything except a complete fluke, especially after Marist struggled the past two weeks. 34 points given to Mt Zion???? Come on, pay attention. If we are to regard Whitfield’s pieces as anything but a complete joke, he needs to show that he has a better grasp of the game, better sources and better research. As far as I can tell, this is ALL he does for the paper. You’d think we’d get a little more out of it.

It’s hard to respect the opinion of someone who completely missed all the clues about Tucker down the stretch.

OK, to all the Tucker fans who want to pile on, here is a word-for-word response that I gave to one of my Tucker fan’s who sent me a rather funny e-mail.

“You know, at some point, this became a big joke, and I really don’t think that I have any choice but to continue to keep picking against Tucker. That isn’t to say that I truly believe that Tucker doesn’t belong here, it’s just one of those things where if I start picking Tucker now, then I will get accused of jumping on the bandwagon. Besides, I would think that most of the Tucker nation would want me to keep picking against the Tigers. Picks against Tucker equal wins for the Tigers.”

All that being said, before the games yesterday in the parking lot outside of D gate was two great parties. I met a group of Tucker fans who had been there since around 10, and they gave me a heckuva ribbing, but what a great group of guys. Could have hung out with those guys all night long and had a blast. The Calhoun fans with the smoked ribs and the music were a great bunch and Calhoun did a great job of filling their side up.

I expected something along the lines of 24-10. To Marist’s credit, they did not give up the big play which Tucker usually pulls off once or twice a game. I was a little surprised at Tucker’s ability to control the ball; it’s not something they’ve been especially good at but I give a major portion of that credit to Chris Beck, who, time after time, reached down and pulled out the clutch performance. We all know about JD’s heart and determination. It seemed to me that most of the passion was on the Tucker side; Marist appeared somewhat listless and never really generated a lot of energy. And despite the very shallow observations of an earlier poster whose opinion seemed to be based on one or two instances of sideline hesitation, enormous kudos to coach Stephens and his staff whose skills took what COULD have been a disappointing season, and achieved what few of us thought possible back in September: a TEAM that surpassed the accomplishments of last year’s super squad.

Chris: Please don’t consider my comments “piling on.” I don’t think it’s unreasonable to want, from a reader’s standpoint, your words to resonate with some authority. Not everyone reads your blog; I would wager that MOST of your followers only see your column in the newspaper without the accompanying comments and responses. That piece needs to be able to stand on its own. If my observations come off as harsh, please accept my apology and a peace offering. The really sad part about your response, Chris, is that you don’t get how my advice to you could save your job. Do you not realize how newspaper subscriptions are down, and that the truth is, whether you choose to believe it or not, “reporting” like yours is key in MANY FOLKS decision NOT TO RENEW A SUBSCRIPTION TO THE AJC!. If you think your “reporting” of the Mt. Zion and Rome games was objective, and gave ANYTHING to two teams and their fans that could have actually beaten Marist had the games been played at a neutral site (I won’t even get into that issue at this point!), you might want to take your resume to the Marist Touchdown Club now before your pink slip shows up—LOL!!!

“Marist always says that Tucker players are “great athletes, but undisciplined”

Historically, there is some to truth to that for Tucker in the playoffs. And it has been said by many more folks around the state other than Marist fans.

Case in point - Tucker vs Statesboro - 2003 Semifinal

Tucker fumbles two punts away deep in their half of the field setting up Statesboro with great field position leading to points on the board.

Tucker’s QB holds the ball out in his hand taunting Statesboro defenders as he is crossing the goal line - but wait - Statesboro strips the ball and recovers the fumble in the end zone - no touchdown for Tucker.

2nd half - Tucker commits several personal fouls on 3rd downs that continue methodical Statesboro drives with key first downs.

Tucker loses 27-24 as Statesboro scores after a lengthy, no mistakes, clock killing drive with time running out.

This is “lack of discipline”. It can kill the most talented teams.

I could also cite examples for the following playoff losses: 2002 - Tucker loses to Shaw - 37-7 - Quarterfinals 2004 - Tucker loses to Statesboro - 15-14 Quarterfinals 2005 - Tucker loses to SWDeKalb - 17-2 First Round

Coach Stephens has brought discipline to this program and matched it with the outstanding talent it has had for a long, long time.

Which finally gives you…a Championship.

Congrats.

To AAAA: LOL, thanks for the memories. I have a few favorites of my own. Ballard’s last year as coach at Tucker, the year the Tigers missed the playoffs with a 7-3 record, against Mays: Tucker defensive back intercepts a pass and races down the sideline toward a TD, except he does a grandstand move and tries to dive into the endzone, coming up a yard short of the goal line! Mays defense holds and Tucker comes away with nothing. Mays won the game. Did Ballard bench the little showoff? Not a chance. No slam against the former coach necessarily, but some of us weren’t sorry to see him move on. Franklin Stephens brings a whole new coaching philosophy to Tucker, and yes that includes giving Davis just enough wiggle room to generate his own brand of excitement even if it p** off the other side.

If you think your “reporting” of the Mt. Zion and Rome games was objective, and gave ANYTHING to two teams and their fans that could have actually beaten Marist had the games been played at a neutral site (I won’t even get into that issue at this point!)

What did I report that wasn’t factual in those two games? Because of special teams errors, Marist was firmly in control of the Mt. Zion game. Against Rome, Marist drove the length of the field in the final 5 minutes of the game and won on the last play of the game. Was it controversial, yes, but the official signaled a touchdown, so that means Marist won. Hey, I am on record for at least the semis and the finals being at neutral sites. I really don’t think you and I have too many differences accept you are a Tucker fan, and I picked against Tucker the last four games of the playoffs. You seem to think I am biased against Tucker when I am not. I just wasn’t a believer, but that is why we play the games, and I give nothing but respect to Tucker, because they EARNED it.

Also, let me give you a little background since you seem to think I have such a big bias against Tucker. My first full-time job was at the Statesboro Herald. There was a certain offensive lineman that played at Georgia Southern at the time who was an All-American and two-time All-Southern Conference. Now, 15 years later, Coach Stephens might not remember me, but I can still remember the respect that I had for that guy from Keysville and what he was all about. He was a no excuses, do right kind of guy, and I think that the Tucker nation would agree with me, and there is your coach of the year in AAAA.

I understand all that, but just for the record, for the entire football season and playoffs, I have a better picking percentage than Shultz, Barnhart and Bradley. Just a little office water-cooler bragging rights, but I would say that carries a little weight. For the year, (not including the final three today) my picking percentage was something like 68 percent and seven out of 10 in the semis last week.

Wow- these Marist fans can cite all of Tucker’s playoff losses going back YEARS. What about all those regular season losses Marist has had over the years to Tucker? What about all those playoff losses Marist had over the years to Thomas County Central? Tucker has as many state championships as Marist the past two decades

And Marist complains about the reffing last night- Marist has been the beneficiary of biased reffing calls for many seasons.

And Marist complains about bad behavior by JD- what about Chadwick getting fined and suspended for hitting a ref? He should have gone the way of Woody Hayes and Bobby Knight

When Marist wins, they “know” that it’s because they are superior beings and they “deserve” to win. When Marist loses they “know” it is because they have been cheated by the refs or that the other team has genetically superior athletes or “get away with” showing their pride and passion, like JD.

Marist always has way too much hubris and entitlement and narcissisim, and they didn’t have nearly enough pride and passion last night. The better team and the better people won last night- Marist is always a bunch of whiners and losers, no matter what their win-loss record is each year

Grayson fan leave NSWR out of your little tantrum. We are a respectable program. Yeah we did play only 12 games this year. But we lost to the state champs in a hell of a game on their home field . otherwise NSWR would likely be state champs. As a matter of fact our only loses in the past four years have come to either defending state champs or that years state champs. Except for a lose to Statesboro in the second round of the 2004 playoffs 4 out of 5 loses were to state champs. So we bring it game in and game out.

“Wow- these Marist fans can cite all of Tucker’s playoff losses going back YEARS.”

That must be my post you are referring to - with references to specific Tucker playoff loses.

You should really think about what was written. How would I know about those losses in such detail?

Because I was there. Supporting Tucker. And watching as some childish individuals blew the chances for the rest of the team through stupid showboating and undisciplined play on the field.

People who know football don’t appreciate that kind of “I” before team attitude, and football coaches certainly dont care for it. It loses games - especially in the playoffs where the competition gets tougher each week you advance.

As I said - Coach Stephens has turned that around at Tucker. He paid attention working under Jeff Herron at Camden County and it shows.

Winning formula: Talent + Discipline = Championship

By To to **Marist**

December 14, 2008 10:42 AM | Link to this

Oh and before I forget - you need to get that chip off your shoulder regarding Marist.

With 30+ years of winning football, they have earned the right to have a little swagger. They have done things the right way for a long time. The Tucker/Marist rivalry is a great tradition, and it’s only going to get better. It makes the game worth going to.

And now we have a Championship at Tucker to hold up as well. Because we’ve got a coach who “gets it”.

See you in the stands next season.
