All-state: Let us know who’s worthy

I got about 100 emails from coaches last week nominating players for our all-state team, which will be announced Dec. 28. Hope to get a hundred more this week. I’m sure they know a little about it, but I’m also eager to know our Poll Talk experts think about the state’s best players in 2008.

Who is worth of all-state? Who is overrated? This is your only week to lobby for somebody because next week, this spot is reserved for the final rankings.

For all-state, we’ll be selecting an all-class player of the year. Should it be Washaun Ealey again? Greg Reid? Branden Smith? I know Smith isn’t a typical choice because his team was not a factor, but I don’t know if I saw a better player in person than him.

We’ll also be selecting offensive and defensive players of the year in each class. Who’s the offensive player of the year in AAA? Angelo Pease? What about the defensive player of the year in AAAA? Jonathan Davis?

As for the finals, I’m going to let Chris Whitfield do the predicting for us later this week, but jump in all you want about the semifinals and the finals. Did Marist cross the plane, and were Carver and Newnan exposed, or did they play their worst game at the worst time?

Without question, what Daniel Drummond from Flowery Branch has done over the last couple of weeks deserves consideration. As a FB fan, I have seen him put this team on his back and willed them to the finals. As a Georgia fan, I cringe thinking about him in the backfield for Tech over the next 4 years. Hoping he gets another scholarship offer somewhere else to good to pass up.

BirdDawg It’s easy when all of your opponents are half your size. FB has a good team, I’ll give them that, but when you outsize and out-muscle all of your opponents as much as they do, the game hardly seems fair. Hard to believe that FB has lost a game this year. You gotta love transfers and “mailing addresses”. It’ll be interesting to see if he can compete at the next level, where everyone is as big as he is.

As for other thoughts about All-State players, consider Conner Norman of PTR. Physical DB, but also very good in coverage. Additionally, Mitchell Williford, who plays as a WR, punt returner, DB, punter, and backup QB for the Lions. He’s a major part of why PTR will be playing in the GA Dome. Finally, it would be nice to see Ian Pemberton in the running for Player of the Year. The little guy put a big Grayson team on his shoulders, and Grayson would not have had the season they did without him.

I HATE TO SAY THIS BUT NEWNAN PLAYED THERE WORST GAME IN TWO YEARS. 20 POINTS WERE DUE TO TURN OVERS. JUST REMEMBER THESE ARE KIDS AND THEY PLAY THERE BEST EVERY WEEK. TO ALL OF THE COUGERS THIS IS NOT THE END OF THE SEASON FOR THE SENIORS BUT THE BEGING OF THE REST OF YOUR LIFE AND WE ARE PROUD OF ALL OF OUR PLAYERS AND STUDENTS FOR A GREAT YEAR AND GREAT SPORTSMENSHIP. Football fan, I agree that Newman probably did not play its best game against Camden, but a large part of that I think was due to who they were playing. A lot of teams this year have said the same thing. Ask Hoover from Alabama. They will be playing for the state championship next weekend and were beaten badly by Camden. We do play in a weak region but its not our fault. We own the best record in the state this decade and have beat almost ever big name team in the state. Our record doesnt lie. GO CATS

I would like to nominate Alfred Moreland Jr, running back for Banneker High School in College Park. This young man had a super year this year. He was nominated as the Offensive Player of the year, 1st team running back, and 1st team kick return in our region. He finished the season with 1955 all purpose yards and 19 touchdowns.

Moreland plays with lots of heart and love for the game

Alfred Moreland, Banneker Trojans. He rushed for 1213 yards and had 1955 all purpose yards. He is the offensive player of the year, 1st team running back, and first team kick returner for Region 5AAAA. He truly deserves to be an All State selection.

I’m going to nominate my favorite QB….Class A….Chase Ellis…..from Towns County who led the Indians from an 0 - 36 record during the past 4 seasons to a 7 - 3 record this year….and the first winning season in school history. While doing this he passed for over 1400 yards (19 TD’s) and rushed for over 1000 yards (9 TD’s). He also maintains an A average in his classwork, is a 3-sport athlete (football, basketball & baseball) and is a truly nice young man.

Xavier Bacon hands down he carried Northside’s entire offense on his back…Nothing against Reid…….Newnan showed us what they were about , and just ran into a elite defense ,what most teams have been doing all season long…..Newnan would have been better off opening up the spread earlier…..Can’t run on Camden with those weak running plays.

There is not a player in Georgia that has done more to help his team win than Washaun Ealey. There have been times when he took the team on his back and pulled out a win. Besides that, he set the Georgia high school record this year for most touchdowns in a year. No question, player of the year, WASHAUN EALEY.

fbjacket Maybe I should change my name to GwinnettAAAAAFan… I’m not a fan of Buford at all. I root for PTR first, 8-AAAAA second. I’m not hugely opposed to moving into another school district to give your child a chance at being a “big star,” but that should entail actually living in that school district (which several of FB players do not do {including Mr. Drummond}. Again, “mailing address”). With that being said, I think it would be more of a benefit to good players to simply remain in their district and help their community out. What’s better? Being a little fish in a big pond or turning the little pond into a big lake.

I say Ronnie Smith of Ptree Ridge. What a show from him. His Talent as a RB is undeniably great! Shows great sportsmanship. Before and after a game.

I also could not wait to see Greg Zellner from Grayson play each week. What a hard hitter, fan pleaser. Was a key defensive (OLB) player in the win over Lowndes. Greg Zellner was also just named hardest hitter in Gwinnett (ourvarsity.com). Greg was a QB, RB, OLB, and punter for Grayson.

I also believe, Greg Reid is a fabulous player.

Shawn Green Grayson, he is a monster, team player, and D-1 worthy. He is also one I come to see each Friday night.

* To Football Fan *

Camden drove six hours, played on a muddy field and won the game. I tip my hat to Newnan fo a great season. I think ir is totally crazy to make excuses why you did not play well. I can easily answer that question, Camden outplayed you guys. All week long we heard the comments concering our Wildcats.

They play in a easy region!!!!

They are overrated!!!!

Newnan will win by 3 touchdowns!!!!!

Put an * beside Camdens wins—-

We are slow on defense!!!!!

All I know is Newnan played a good game and we certainly respect their abilities to play football.

HOWEVER—-CAMDEN WILL GO TO THE DOME

Michael Green from Camden County I think has 11 interceptions on the season. On top of that he also starts at wide recieve and has had plenty of big plays on offense. If that isn’t enough he is on every speacial team and has returned several KOs and PRs for touchdowns. He is a phenomenal athlete who has had many big plays for one of THE BEST TEAMS IN THE COUNTRY: Put a * next to every game if you would like including Hoover NSWR and Newnan, but no matter how many * you put down, WE STILL HAVE THE BEST WINNING PERCENTAGE OF ALL TEAMS IN THE STATE OF GEORGIA AND WE ARE STILL PLAYING FOR STATE THIS WEEKEND. While I am admittedly biased, it has to be XAVIER BACON of the Northside Eagles. As Reeze said, the man literally carried Northside to a 10-2 record. Without him, it’s doubtful we would have been in the playoffs. Greg Reid is an outstanding runner, but he was one of many for Lowndes. Bacon had no such help. He was, for all intents and purposes, THE NORTHSIDE OFFENSE.

I said it from the beginning, the metro Atlanta area would get a chance to see the Cairo High Syrupmakers up-close and personal. We have a BEAST at QB in Angelo Pease. He put on a show against Carver on Friday night. I see all these All-State teams, but I rarely if ever see the guys name mentioned on the first or second team. Saturday at 5pm, everybody in the state of Georgia will see what I have been saying all year. The kid is a special talent. Any Division I team running the spread offense should be looking at him. Oh yeah, RB Reginald Bryant is a load as well. The Syrupmaker offense will put up 40+ on Flowery Branch in the Dome.

He played against the best and all the top rank players. He showed everybody why he is one of the best running backs in the state even though he dont get all the press some people do. You need to do a little more research and get the chip off your shoulder. The AAA Coaches named Angelo Pease, Reginald Bryant, and Montavious Williams 1st Team All-State last year, while the AJC named all 3 Honorable Mention All-State, and the AP named Pease & Bryant to theirs. Honorable Mention would equal the 2nd Team version.

Obviously, all great players in the State of Georgia across classifications. I’d like to make sure one of the best playmakers I have seen this year is mentioned…Jonathan Davis of Tucker. I have seen him literally put this team on his back erly in the season and carry them until they came together and developed as a team. Practically playing every down at RB and LB and excelling at both is a mark of a great player. He fits this role.

Please remember that all of us South Georgia Fans around Emanuel County, don’t have access to the Atlanta Journal newspaper, except via internet. I so wish we did have access to AJC paper, we subscribed to it for years, just for the sports section. So if you don’t get a lot of responses for Ealey being voted best player in the state, that’s probably part of the reason. Don’t let all those Atlanta area folks sway your vote too much, they probably haven’t made the trip down to metro TWIN CITY, GEORGIA to watch the best player in the state. And to Joe, who commented in this section about how ECI didn’t have any competion, etc., evidently Mark Richt thinks Ealey has played against some pretty good competion, and thinks he’s capable of playing in the SEC, since he’s verbally committed to Georgia. This is a great football program, a great bunch of “Christian” coaches who teach these kids more than just the game of football, they make them into better persons, prepare them for life on and off the field. ECI is very fortunate to have this type of football program going on here and very fortunate to have the athletes they have on this team. Ealey has proven himself once again this year, in EVERY game, that he is the BEST player in the state. Doesn’t matter if its A or AAAAA, he has the states to prove it and if you get a little extra time, go to Statesboro Herald website, look up ECI the Season and you will get a first hand look at Ealey in every game he’s played this year. He has broken record after record in the state of Georgia that was set by some of the greatest athletes who went on to be very successfull in the NFL. Please consider, once again, the most deserving and worthy, player of the year, best in the state, Washaun Ealey. If you get a chance, tellyour bossman, we sure miss the AJC down here South of Macon Georgia. Take Care!

I have to agree with NHS and Reeze on this one, Xavier Bacon is the best running back I have seen this season and that includes watching Ealy play against Treutlen earlier this year. ECI’s offense is all run all the time and built around Ealy, and once he hits that second level of the defense he is gone because most of the defenses he faced had everybody playing both ways and they werent as good as what BACON had to endure this season.

Defensively, Mike Green from Camden and the LB Fields from Northside are just flat out gamechangers. Not saying Jones from NHS is overrated, but Fields is the best LB I have seen in a long time.

He showed his lack of real training, and his immaturity in the Grayson game when right from the start he “played the role” by taking cheap shots and taunting the Grayson sideline and players…ALL NIGHT!!!! Homet - you hit the nail on the head. An All-State player represents his community as well as himself.

In particular, the Player of the Year should be a person of high integrity and sportsmanship - at least as much as he should be an exceptional athlete/playmaker.

Your All-State and Players of the Year will be representing you and your state in the coming years. So, please people, consider that as you make your suggestions.

Jonathan Davis over Greg Reid for POY. Linebackers make a bigger impact in hs ball than corners. Both were instrumental to their teams’ offense and provided leadership. Every college recruiter I have addressed says Davis would be the top prospect in the country if he were 6 feet tall. That shouldn’t stop him from winning this award, and it won’t stop him from leading Tucker to its first state title and revenge over Marist next week. He has made three staight tackles to force a three and out then turned around and carried five straight times on a touchdown drive more than once this season. Branden Smith will be the top college player to come out of Georgia this year and will play in the league if he stays healthy, but he was not able to make the same impact because his team did not achieve the same level of success.

Honestly I think you can’t do this until after next week.

Kevin Minter and the PRidge defense are really good but Camden and Tucker are the fastest teams I’ve seen all year.

I think you can pencil in Jonathan Davis as the QB of that defense if they stay clean and don’t commit penalties which killed them in the first game with Marist. Drayton Calhoun has also been excellent.

what about the QB/do everything guy from Dublin. Rashard Smith I think? Obviously Washaun Ealey.

Greg Baker has been tremendous all year for Camden and Greg Reid as well.

Then Honestly pound for pound champion… How do you look at all state caliber players without talking about Ean Pemberton.

Also for Marist, if they beat tucker twice… thier QB deserves strong consideration. Chadwick made a great move after that early loss and they have been extrodinarily solid.

Julian Bellinger of Lithonia H.S. SR. ATH. Is the one of the states most kept secret he is 6’1 175 if he was on a better team he would be all everything he played QB, WR, S, CB, KR, PR. He over 400 yard passing, 100 yards rushing, 300 receiving, 30 tackles and 3int, not to say he had 3 kickoff returns for TD and 2 Punt returns for TD. He should be the 4A ATH all state.

Mack Brown of MLK the JR RB 6’0 195 is the best RB in the state may be the country had over 1500 yards rushing big, strong, fast.

Jonathan Davis of Tucker SR. LB 5’8 210 is a Beast best Defensive player I saw all year.

Christian Floyd of Lithonia JR. TE 6’4 255 is a grown man big and fast I look up his stats he had 20 or more catches for over 400 receiving 5 TD its probably no other TE in the State with those numbers.

Mike Coke of Redan SR. OL 6’3 300 is the Best OL I saw all year Physical Kid

Nathaniel Anthony of Columbia RB 5’10 185 is worthy of all state or honorable mention.

William Pratcher of Cedar Grove SR. RB had over 2000 yards rushing.

Jason Wynn of Clackston SR DB had 10 int.

ALL STATE FIRST TEAM LOCKS-EAN PEMBERTON RB GRAYSON

I saw Pemberton last week, and he was terrific, but would he be first-team just in Gwinnett County? Was he better than Brandon Jacobs and DJ Adams?

And then when you go statewide, you bring in Toney Williams (Milton), Xavier Bacon (Northside) and maybe Greg Reid (Lowndes) if you put Reid at RB and not DB.

Class AAAAA is so deep w/ talent that there should be two first teams.

HOW DO YOU ASSESS AN ALL-STATE, COACH AND PLAYER OF THE YEAR TEAM? IS IT BASED ON REGULAR SEASON OR POST-SEASON SUCCESS. I FEEL THAT IT SHOULD BE PRIMARILY ON REGULAR SEASON NUMBERS. COACH OF THE YEAR, HOWEVER, CAN BE BASED ON POSTSEASON SUCCESS. THINK ABOUT GOOD PLAYERS ON BAD TEAMS?? I SAY SO BECAUSE I DON’T BELIVE ITS FARE TO LEAVE OUT A TALENTED PLAYER ON A BAD TEAM.. IT HAPPENS ALL OF THE TIME. ANOTHER THING, THAT WILL HELP.. CAN EACH FIRST TEAM MEMBER HAVE A SHORT VIDEO HIGHLIGHT ON AJC SO EVERYONE CAN SEE THE PLAYER FOR THEMSELVES. HERE IS ANOTHER GOOD IDEA.. TO SETTLE THIS NORTH VS. SOUTH GEORGIA BATTLE.. HOW ABOUT HAVING A EARLY SEASON CHALLENGE.. Xavier Bacon, is, without question, the best running back that I have seen at the High School level in a long time. Little doubt in my mind that he can play and be very successful at the next level. He has the size and speed as well as the ability to get yards after contact. Have not seen Ealey play, but if his stats are indicative, he can play at any level.

After watching Camden and Newnan play, it was obvious that Camden played probably their best defensive game of the year. Newnan’s inability to run effectively and Camden’s ability to pressure the qb were the determining factors, turnovers not withstanding. Anyone who thinks that Newnan does not have a very talented football team is clearly mistaken. No doubt in my mind that they are one of the elite teams in AAAAA this year.

Brandon Jacobs is an excellent back as is Toney Williams, in fact when you look at it Georgia has great backs in all classes.

As a former player and member of the 1990 State AAA Championship team I am so glad this group of Seniors get a crack at again after last year’s loss to Carver-Columbus who we just destroyed last Friday night. Angelo Pease who shares some of my blood has made his case and solidified it with his performance on Friday that he should get STRONG consideration for POY. This team has been on a mission since that 3 point lost in the Championship game last year. Todd I am glad you listened earlier in the preseason when you inquired about who should be closely looked at as the teams to beat in High School football. Cairo was the obvious choice in AAA since we had over half the team returning from last year. I am hopeful you or the AJC will give us some more love leading up to the game on Saturday. Go Cairo!!! You started with mentioning our QB in this blog. Thank You!!!

KENNETH GILSTRAP, STEPHEN HILL,JOEL KIGHT all should be on the all state team or honarble mention. This years Dekalb all star game should be a good one. Anyone but Greg Reid. I admit I only saw the Grayson game, but while he is a great runner with lots of speed , he was mediocre on defense, primarily getting to runners late than piling on, showboating and talking smack like he did something. Bad attitude and only fair defensive skills shouldn’t be qualities of the player of the year, despite his offensive accomplishments. Go to Florida and please don’t come back!

On offense I would have to say Xavier Bacon (Northside) or Greg Reid (Lowndes). Take your pick; you can’t go wrong with either one of those guys.

On defense I’m going to have to go with Mike Green from THE CAMDEN COUNTY HIGH. This guy has stepped up big for Camden all year. He starts at DB, PR, and WR, and has made at least one touchdown at each of those positions. If it wasn’t for this guy Camden would be at home watching Woodstock and Peachtree Ridge play in the dome game this weekend. Yeah you read right, I believe Woodstock would have beaten Newnan last week.

Greg Reid is a game changer . The guy is no saint,as most of us aren’t. Anyone who has played ball knows that all kind of trash talking goes on during games and I know that Reid probably gets more than any high school athlete. Of course the guy is going to respond. My favorite player The Playmaker Micheal Irvin was the same way! Reid was something else, the guy had an impact on both sides of the football for 4 years. Every game he would something that would make you ask ,how did he do that. I hate the Gaytors with a passion, but they are getting another Percy Harvin.

Xavier Bacon for player of the year. The Macon Telegraph reported a few weeks ago that this was “virtually” the same team the won the State title 2 consecutive years. Obviously they don’t do their homework before reporting on highschool atheletics. Northside lost, through graduation, 3 of 4 offensive linemen, their Quarterback Marques Ivory, altime leading rusher Tijuan Green, along with the two best receivers they’ve ever had in Nick Bass and Kevyn Cooper. Making it to the second round of the playoffs was a great accomplishment for a team who “couldn’t compete with the big boys”. Bacon literally carried the Northside offense. I refer to us as Northside not that NSWR crap. Until that other school with the same becomes relevant in high school football whay make the distinction. We are NORTHSIDE HIGH SCHOOL!

HeadEast contributes a very harsh criticism and an obviously uneducated opinion about Greg’s talent. Admittedly, this moron says that it only saw one game and then continues to spew mindless, meaningless, blather consistent with it’s education. Greg Reid is the best athlete in the state period, and you people just cannot stand it and will not admit it, though you know it is true. Just look back at what he did in his junior year and he had an even better senior year. Check out all the You Tube videos, and it will be undeniable. HeadEast is a pathetic loser, and hopefully he is not an adult getting on this forum and speaking so badly about a high school student.

XAVIER BACON did his job in outstanding fashion WITHOUT all of the finger pointing, taunting, etc. I saw every game, and not one time did I see him do anything after a run, but to get up and prepare for the next play. He’s a class act, who did not seek personal attention. His only goal was to help Northside win, and he took us further than most of us truly believed we could go after losing so much talent from last year’s team.

Here is a thought to start conversation. What if Greg Reid had of played for Northside and Xavier Bacon for Lowndes. Reid playing running back full time for Northside, returning kickoffs, etc. and Bacon doing the same for Northside. Both of these guys played some of the best defenses in the state (Reid-Northside, Grayson, Peachtree Ridge to name 3) (Bacon-Lowndes, Camden, Carver to name 3). If the players and teams had of been swapped would either team had been better because of it? Would Northside have been more explosive on offense to go with their defense? Would Joe Scott have had another target to throw to? Would Lowndes runnung game have been any more dominating with Bacon instead of Reid?

Its a shame that Greg Baker #7 for Camden County has been nursing a bad ankle since the Northside game. After rushing for over 100 yds against a stout Northside defense, he’s been seen in a cameo role vs Woodstock and Newnan. He’s Camden’s leading rusher with a 10 plus ypc average and would really be a big boost for us against PTR. Hope he’s back 100% for the final.

Having grown up watching the Wing T where it was invented, and also graduating from that fine institution, I know exactly what you are saying regarding Greg Reid. No doubt he is a very talented and dangerous running back. Not sure that he would be as effective in a power oriented attack. Bacon, would succeed in pretty much any type of offense, albeit in the Wing T he would have to share the load with the other backs, just has Greg Reid does at Lowndes and Greg Baker does at Camden. My only reason for giving the edge to Bacon is that I think that his build and skill set will allow him to carry the ball at pretty much every level and be successful. Not saying that folks like Reid and Baker as well as those I have not had the opportunity to see are not great players, just saying that Bacon impressed me as being able to run against Camden, where most people have not been successful. That, in and of itself speaks volumes for him as half of his yards were after contact.

By far: GREG REID!!!!

By Eric Adkison

December 8, 2008 4:00 PM | Link to this

Wow, this was a good year for the offensive players, but I must say that Greg Reid is one of the best players in Georgia history. Greg Reid is the best player in the state. Now Johnnie Farms is the best offensive lineman in the state. That kid is a beast, he demands all the respect that he has received. That kid will dominate any defensive player that lines up in front of him. Johnnie Farms should be apart of he All state team for the second year in a row.

I think Angelo Pease should be the player of the year. He does it not only through running but passing, and when he is not running up the score on offense he is in the secondary contributing there.

Montavious Williams, Ronnie Wooten also play both ways with many others.

You have to look at our offensive line too our heaviest guy weighs 237 and we’ve been running up and down the field all year while giving Pease time to pass against guys up to 60 lbs heavier then them, come on man.

Give a Syrupmaker a little love

I was at MOMO stadium and as said above Cairo has the best player in AAA and maybe the state in Angelo Pease.

I wouldn’t dream of saying that he’s the state’s best, but Rashard Smith of Dublin threw for 13 TDs, ran for 13, had 7 picks on D, and returned a couple of kicks for TDs as well; all this while playing every play on offense and defense (except KO coverage)!

I’m from Camden and I love my Cats. I would vote for Greg Baker, But Greg Reid is a player you will love to hate. He is the best player I seen this year because he very good at RB, DB,PT,and sometimes Lowndes put him at QB. I don’t know if he return kick offs

compare Toney Williams numbers to Greg Reids , and you will find who the best Running back in the state is. Toney has over 2000 yards, to Reids 1200. Toney has 26 TDS to Reids 21, In two less games. The best D player in my opinion is Minter from PR. The tackle numbers are down, because he missed three games. Robbie Godhigh of Harrison is also a great player, who went both ways and scored over 20 touchdowns, playing every week against teams better than mosot played against.

By Cobb Fan

December 8, 2008 5:20 PM | Link to this

They might not make any all state teams but two of the most underated players are Robbie Godhogh and Nick Jackson from Harrison High School. Godhigh is very small but very strong and can run people over just as easily as make them miss. Jackson is the 6’4” center who opens the holes for Godhigh and others. He also blocks linebakcers and db’s when needed. Godhigh has been a starter for four years and Jackson for three.

HoyaDawg, you are only talking about running the ball. Greg is dangerous regardless of what position he is playing. I guarantee Greg had more total yds. than Williams because Greg had 9 ints. punt returns, rushing, receiving and possibly kick return yds. He probably had 3000 or more totals yds. for the season

I appreciate those of you who think players should stay in their own district. It sounds logical and fair. But think about those kids who would probably not get a D1 offer if they played at the 5A schools who don’t have the time to market every senior who wants a shot. If my kid were good enough, I’d do everything I could to increase his odds. It’s not easy and too expensive for most to “just move to the district”. I agree Buford has benefitted from good players, but the majority are in the district, and Buford doesn’t just take them because they’re good. There are MANY tuition kids attending the schools that have nothing to do with football. They’ve got a great system, great facilities that would rival a small college, and unbelievable support.

If you go to the FB vs. Cairo game Saturday, you will see the Bronko Nagurski like D. Drummond going both ways and dominating. I would put Drummond in the elite category and you can’t overlook Connor Shaw’s leadership as a Jr. QB. He has gotten better each game and has performed consistently all season long with clutch drives throughout the year and especially during the playoffs. Izaan Cross should also get consideration for his leadership on the team and performance as a intimidating DE.

Congrats to Flowery Branch! You guys whipped the Grangers on both sides of the ball. Also, congrats to the Grangers for having made it to the semi-finals in 2008. An amazing play-off run given all that has happened to the team this year. As for the Drummond kid, he is simply a beast. One of the best I have seen in GHS football. As a life time die hard Granger fan, I can at least rest easy knowing that the Grangers will NOT be facing Cairo this week. LOL.

Greg Reid is the most talented athlete in Georgia without a doubt. However, his attitude and behavior is the worst in Georgia. Just watch the films from Grayson, Tift, Northside, Coffee, to see taunting, mouthing, and starting fights. Sorry but that kind of attitude and behavior should not be rewarded. It should be banned from high school sports.

Newnan Cougar Fans, Saw the entire Newnan vs. Camden game on tape after returning home from the LaGrange debacle. Not terribly shocked by the LG loss, but very surprised by the Newnan loss. When Newnan fell behind in the first half due to some mis cues, the team seemed to sort of come apart. After all, they are not accustomed to playing “catch up”. Not to take anything away from Camden. They are obviously a great team whom I believe will win the BIG one next week against P’Tree Ridge. Hate it for the Cougars, but Coach Herring and his staff have done a great job with this 2008 Cougar team. My best wishes for the future.

Lets face the facts…….If Reid and Bacon were such game changers……then why are they at home watching. Becuse the bottom line is this. When needed they couldnt make it happen. Great players yes, but the best, well the best step up and come through when all is lost to help not only get your back in it but put it ahead and help keep it there. As we all saw those two players were not able to do that. Now on the other hand Mike Greene from Camden seemed to be able to rise to the occassions and sustain that level. Also lets not forget the entire O line for Camden. These young men man handled every team out there even when the chips were down and there backs to the fence, they took much larger D lines and just moved them out of the way and opened holes trucks could drive through. This has been Camdens weakness for years and now they have that line and look where they are. The almighty 31 points in 13 games Newnan couldnt handle them nor could the #2 in the state of Alabama, not to mention NSWR or Norcross. Face the facts, the best are still standing and all others watch GPB.

I would like to nominate Kelton Hill, QB @ Lithia Springs H.S.for All State Honors, because of his accomplishments on a team that was young and inexperience and as a result not able to win very many games this year. Kelton was able to pass for over 2200yds. and run for another 1200 plus yds.

Kelton also threw 20 tds and rushed for another 10 and throwing only four interceptions, two of which hit off of a receivers shoulder pads and a third inwhich was on a hail mary play, so in essence, Kelton only threw one interception that he should have been credited with.

Kelton has maintained a G.P.A. of atleast a 3.2 and has never missed a day of school in his life and will graduate with 14 years of perfect attendance.

Kelton has serve his community well, volunteering with the Boys and GFirls club for the past two years and working with the younger youth at the local recreation park for the past four years.

Kelton has never been in trouble with school officials, his parents nor the Law.

Kelton is a three year started on his team and has passed for about 5000yds.during that time and ranfor over 2000.

Kelton also is a standout baseball player and also plays on the basketball team.

It is for all of these reasons,I think Kelton should be considered for all state honors.

lee champion, I have to agree with you. Although I was fortunate (or unfortunate) to see both LG and Newnan on Friday, all I got to see from Carver vs. Cairo was an edited version of the game. However, Carver did exactly what I said they would do if Cairo dominated special teams and created turnovers. Carver gave up 1 TD on a return. Then proceeded to give up 4 turnovers which all turned into TD’s. That is 35 points. Not to say that Cairo would not have won anyway. I believe that Cairo had the better team. But as for Flowery Branch vs. Cairo: Flowery Branch is a MUCH better coached team who will not give up the easy points, and play solid special teams. When I look back at their record, I am amazed that anyone on their schedule could have even played them a close game, let alone defeat them. But like many other great teams, they have peaked at the right time of the year. They will have a load to handle against Cairo, but look for a much tighter game. Did I mention the Drummond kid? Remember him.

Kelton also has 30 tds and only 4 interceptions. Kelton was able to accomplish this knowing the opposing team was gearing up to stop him and not tomention, his team played against 5 teams that won 8 or more games this past season.

Kelton had two five ormore touchdown games, had a single game where he rushed for 268 and passed for 150yds.Kelton had three games., where had 400 yards oftotal offense. Kelton has also lead his team in rushing two for straight years. Kelton is a quaterback that can throw as well as he runs, which is rare.

Kelton is a great young man, with good grades and great respect for his oppenent.club for the past two years and working with the younger youth at the local recreation park for the past four years.

This is why I believe Kelton should be rewarded with thishonor.

Comparison of Cairo players to current NFL players to give everybody some idea of what to look forward to on Saturday:

Reginald Bryant (RB) aka “Thunder” = Marion Barber III

Ronnie Wooten (RB) aka “Lightning” = Felix Jones/Chris Johnson (Titans)

Angelo Pease (QB)= YKW

This is why I say our offense will put up 40 on Flowery Branch.

With a small fast defense like Tampa. Just ask Carver-Columbus.

Bacon was the game changer against Camden. Down 14 to 0, he put his team on his back to lead 20 to 14. He made it happen. Fortunately for Camden, Bacon did not play on defense.

By Wildcatter

December 8, 2008 7:41 PM | Link to this

Bacon is good no doubt, but the best the best play on. Defense, if he was that great he would of been there too. He did what he could but it wasnt enough, and when choosing the best …….well the best have more than enough. There are so many talented players in the state of Georgia, what makes the difference is being able to rise above and get your team to the next level. As for Reid his own action spoke for themself the entire season and he received his just rewards at the expence of his team. Great players not only play …..they also represent and Reid could not hold back his ego for himself or his team.

Now again look at that Camden O line. All great young men, all good students and no ego’s. Just play everyday as hard as they can and expect nothing more than there running backs to bust through and take it to the house. Then they pick themselves up, sprint to the end zone and congradulate the team mate. Thats what greats are made of.

I don’t know what NSWR would have done at running back if he hadn’t transferred in (12th grade)from Alaska with his military family. Of course, he did set some records in Kentucky before going to Alaska. Just my belief that he will play college ball in Kentucky.

When referring to the Cairo vs. Flowery Branch game, after proof reading what I previously wrote, it sounded as if I was saying that Flowery Branch is “better caoched” than Cairo. My bad. The point I was trying to make is that F. Branch is better coached than Carver-Col, and will not beat themselves with turnovers and inept special teams play. Cairo will win. But the Falcons may make things interesting. Come to think of it, if F. Branch unleashes the Drummond kid early in the game, THEY just might win. Go Falcons! Great time of year! Who knows?!LOL.

“Lets face the facts” The mere fact that Reid and Bacon were on these teams is the reason either made the playoffs at all. Northsides losses on offense to graduation would have mentally defeated any other team, but not the Eagles, they ONLY jumped up in classification and were still able to finish 2nd in the states toughest region. Greg Reid carried Lowndes to a 12-1 record and a national ranking even though his true position is at cornerback. With Lowndes losses on the offensive line, only one senior started, and the loss of its greatest running back, Darriet Perry, the Vikings could have easily been nothing more than a mirror image of the ‘06 team. A good defensive team, but no offense. Greg Reid put this team over the top. If the all-class player of the year is given to that one person that truly plays like a man among boys, Greg is it.

We could debate this for months which I am sure you will A.V. but life is to short and when it comes to choosing an All Stater it’s not only about what happens on the field even though your star player impressed the state with his show boating and egotistical ways. He not only made the Vikings look classless he dragged down the coaching staff for looking like they had no control of this kid.

If Im making up a team that represents Geogia Football High Schools finest. I want the best athletes, students, team player, leaders, and over all Great kids. Im sure we can find a few hundred of them in GEORGIA!!!!! But Reid isnt one of them.

Now If were looking for a individual that doesnt respect the game, the players around him or his coaching staff then you have found your man.

Dont get me wrong, Reid is one Heck of an athlete and a man amoung boys……..But remember these are young men not men and the way they act, say and do represents a lot more than just them selves. They represent Their high school, their town, their community and fan base. Im sure if you ask around winnersville you will see who represents you best and I am sure its not Reid.

Without a doubt the best player I have seen all year is Jonathan Davis of Tucker. Not only does he have an incredible amount of talent on the field, he has the intelligence to lead his team. Throughout the few games I got to see him play this year his intensity level was high and even in the worst of times he still gave it all until the whistle blew. Player of the year should not go to the player who has the most division one offers or all around talent, but it should go to the player who came out and led his team to the point where they are now. Point blank, Jonathan Davis is the best all around football player in the state of Georgia. But someone who I really haven’t seen getting a lot of publicity on this board that I believe should is Tamburo from North Gwinnett. We need to realize the legacy he has left behind as a quarterback at the school and the success he has had at North Gwinnett.

I think that Bradden Smith has tremdous speed and lots of schools want speed. However, it is always a concern of mine when a player puts his coming out party, aka tv all american game, ahead of his team. If a player is truly committed to a team and future teammates then he lets them know as early as possible once he had made his decision. Any thing else is putting yourself ahead of the team in my opinion. But then again I forget that these kids are only 18 and have lots of time to mature yet. I wish the tv network would not encourage this behavior cause I only see it as a lack of respect for the programs and merely toting themselves on national tv. A otherwise special event to me is marred by the players who exhibit this as their stage and lack my respect.

I agree with many of the others…Mitchell Williford is hard to over look. It is no coincidence that PTR’s defense became even tougher when he moved to CB in the 5th game of the season. He’s led them with almost 50 catches/750 yds, has 8 receiving TDs and has had a pick in each of the 4 playoff games. His open field tackling is remarkable. It takes a gritty kid to play almost every play in Gwinnett at 5A…and he stands out on every down.

THE ONLY DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MARIST AND MOUNT ZION WAS TWO MISSED PAT’S

Big Fan of 4A, you really mischaracterize Marist’s win over Mt. Zion. I covered the game, and Marist was never in any real danger of losing that game. The War Eagles led 28-7 and were always at least one score ahead the entire game until Mt. Zion scored the last touchdown and the two-point conversion to make it a 1-point game. Also remember that one of those missed extra points was blocked by Marist. That is called making your own luck.

Greetings Everyone On The Blog,

It has been a very busy week for me as the reason I have nmot been able to get on the blog.

I have to say to the Newnan Fans that you aqll have a right to be proud of your team. Newnan gave it all they had, and they should not hold their heads down.

Newnan had a very impressive season for that, I take my off to them. As I said earlier in the blog. Camden County is a very very good team. I don’t see anyone in the State that can beat them.

I week after week I told the Fans that Camden County is for real, and not to take them for a joke. Now we can honestly say, ask Eagle Nation Rising, NewnanDad08, VikingFan, BoDog, and to all whom I missed.

They can now tell you also that Camden County is the Real Deal out of Region 3-AAAAA. Although I was wrong with some of my predictions of whom Camden County will face this coming Saturday, I was not wrong about Camden County going to the Dome and play for the Class AAAAA State Title.

I was only wrong as to whim they will play as in this very tough Class of Football Teams, veryweek was an upset in Class AAAAA.

First I said that it would be Camden County vs Lowndes County but Grayson stunned them. Then I said it would be Grayson vs Camden County, and Peachtridge beat them. Now it is Peachtree Ridge vs Camden County.

But make no mistakes, Peachtree is a pretty good team, but I don’t think that it is your time this year. This is Camden County, and Camden County will bring back the Title to Region 3-AAAAA South Georgia.

Hey Yo-Yo, to keep you up-to-date on your favorite topic - Texas 6-man football! Strawn, TX is going to take it all this year. In the first 4 play-off rounds they have scored 83, 60, 89 and 102 points (and this ain’t basketball points). Even the seasoned football sage that you are, know that even in 6-man this is unheard of. They have about 5 of your ‘Greg Reids’. In fact after the game film of Grayson’s domination of Lowndes was sent to them, they want a piece of Lowndes. Just jump on I-20 and about halfway between Ft. Worth and Abilene look to your right. There’s Strawn but don’t blink or you’ll miss it (and gas up before you leave Ft. Worth). I know you will not be able to sleep until the finals this weekend so I’ll let you know how they fair against Follet.

Todd - Don’t forget the O-lineman out there. Take a look at one that is under the radar because he is not 6’4” plus - Cade Yates from Roswell High at 6’2” 270 lbs he as been the backbone of the O-Line at Roswell for the past three years. To get the full lowdown contact Coach Barker at or Coach Sanderson at Roswell.

Some Stats: •2006 - Starting sophomore in all 15 games on Class 5A State Championship team. •2007- Started in 13 games in route to Elite Eight in Class 5A (lost on the road to eventual state champion Lowndes). •2007 - All North Fulton County First Team (only junior to be named to team). •2008 - North Fulton 2008 Pre-Season Stellar Seven. •2008 - All Fulton County First Team. •2008 – Varsity Team Captain

Overall, Greg Reid without a doubt. If I had to break it down by offense and defense it would be Xavier Bacon (NHS) on offense and Demps from Lowndes on defense. D. Ivey at NHS is a great LB. Cameron Eddy, a safety, at WRHS is good too. Johnnie Farms at Perry High is a beast on the OL.

Let me put a word in for Nick Lombardo. I believe we will finally own a state title all by ourselves on Saturday, and it was Nick who was calling the shots and making it happen this year. He passes, he runs, he manages the execution of PTR’s strategy. PTR would not be where it is without him.

I think Mitchell Williford is unbelievable. He is a “do everything” player. In almost any conceivable situation you can count on Mitch to be a factor. I agree with everybody who nominated him here. I cannot believe that the scouts are not lined up at his door begging to sign him.

I agree with the nomination of Ronnie Smith as well. As talented a running back as you could wish for. Fast, tricky, able to shake off a tackle and keep running. He can push two or three defensive linemen back and make yardage right in your face - or vault over the top like he did for the TD last week.

We have been the dark horse all year - but I think on Saturday everybody will have to recognize the truth. PTR did not get this far on luck. This is a talented team - a team so talented that one single player does not stand out. We have different players stepping into the limelight on every play. Above all they are a TEAM. They work together and it is the synergy of all that talent that makes victories.

So - you knew I was a fan, right?

But I have to give credit to Ean Pemberton. He is awesome. If Grayson had just one more weapon, just one more playmaker to introduce some doubt as to who might be carrying the ball they would have been unstoppable. It is unfair to ask one kid to carry the team. Granted, it makes him a superstar, but it also makes him a target. We never had any question as far as what we had to do to stop Grayson. We knew we had to stop Ean Pemberton - and we did. He had to face Minter, the Botts boys, and the whole weight of the PTR defense. That he did as much as he did is to his credit. He was not as tricky as I thought he would be. He hit us straight up - for which PTR must be thankful.

Saturday will be a contest to remember. GO LIONS!!!

PIt Crew Lion,

NO disrespect to your team, but your right, just one more big ball carrier and they could have had it done. Disappointed because they did have one more big carrier, they chose not to use him, and I’ll never understand why.

Best receiver in the State has to be Demario Bennet from Coffee County. He caught everything thrown his way and was a big time play maker for a team that most would say played well above expectations.

Caleb Lester from Douglass High is the best cornerback in the state..!!! Caleb had 2 Ints, 15 pass breakups, and 67 tkles.. He locked down 5-star recruit Branden Smith, held him to 0 receptions and 0 receiving yards.. Also, Caleb made the All-Region team(2AAAAA) and the All-County team(Fulton).. This kid should know doubt be on the All-State team

Caleb Lester CB from Douglass High for ALL-STATE….!!!!

By Big Fan of 4A

December 9, 2008 8:09 PM | Link to this

My bad, Chris—I was relying on your reporting, which said two PAT kicks failed, not that one of them had been blocked…Even so, if the one had been good, it would have been a tie, and gone to overtime…And since I think Rome led a good part of the game until the last few seconds this past week, and Mt Zion WAS mounting a comeback against the mighty Marist (how dare they), I think I still make my point. AJC just might have a little more subscribership if more teams besides Marist were given the positive slant for what they’ve accomplished in a game…But what do I know, I’m just one of your readers…!

Big Fan of 4A Obviously you’re a Pius fan jealous of Marist’s run of success. Friday’s game will be HUGE. Tucker wants revenge. Marist knows this, and also knows they don’t stand a chance unless they play their A game like they did the first time. btw-another recruiting drawback for Jonathan Davis is his attitude. I have never seen a player as active as him after the runner goes down.

By Clubhouse

Player of the year. I guess defensively I would go with Branden Smith or Jonathan Davis. Offensively I definitely won’t pick Greg Reid. I too have been to games and watched his disrespect and the sad part is his coaches must be so star struck that they are scared to check him. I do like Bennett from Coffee but I would probably have to go with Ealey Drayton Calhoun or Toney Williams.

Other players I have seen play with my own eyes this year who have stood out on the field and should make at least 1st team all state would are: Lott, Cross, Mitchell-Thornton, Drayton, Jarvis Jones, Desmond Dennis, and Burnette.

I don’t know where you were when Douglass played Washington or who told you that Branden was held to no catches and no yards, but I was in Lakewood Stadium that day. We all saw him catch an 80 yard bomb for a touchdown on Washington’s first play from scrimmage. You need to check yourself, King. Don’t come on here trying to make stuff up.

I agree with BleedBlue you can’t look past Stephenson High D-Fense they have a Defenseve tackle #56 Michael Thornton (don’t know if he is related to Nigel). He changed offensive stratagies all season and he has another year on a defense that already has history on it’s side.

I would have to recommend Connor Norman, Kevin Minter and the Botts boys from P’tree Ridge. They are all exceptional student-athletes and leaders for their team. I would also like to give props to Ean Pemberton he is expolsive and just awesome to watch week after week. The Rams gave the Ridge a run for their money and it was the best game I have seen in a long time.

Ah Poo King Branden caught the pass after lining up in the backfied as a running back and going in motion, therefore it was the LB’s responsibility to cover the back not the corner.Nobody is making anything up, when Smith lined up as a receiver, he didn’t have any catches against Lester. That’s the facts.

By KING

December 10, 2008 2:21 PM | Link to this

King of Poo you are right he did catch a 68-yard TD on the other cornerback and he caught another pass at the end of the game on the linebacker while he was lined up in the slot.. The passes he caught he was avoiding #5. After that the coach from Douglass put number 5 on him the whole game.. And like I said he held to 0 Rec. and 0 Rec. Yards… Now is that right or wrong…???

Greetings BI Fan,

Yes indeed, I am still here. As we are all working people, sometimes it is heard to get on the blog to represent, but, I am glad to see Region 3-AAAAA Camden County whom I know far so well that will be playing in the Dome for the State Championship. I called this all season long, and a lot of bloggers didn’t believe me. I am very proud of that team, and Coach Jeff Herron in striving to a perfect Season.

Caleb Lester from Douglass High is the who ever say that the best cornerback in the state is Caleb yall is wrong and who say that he locked down 5-star recruit Branden Smith(me)yall still is wrong .see my team didnt throw me the ball that game so therefore he didnt lock me down. i can really say that NO one locked me down this year he u want to see if he can lock me down then tell him to call me and we can get a time and date and everybody can see if he can lock me down. als who ever say that he is the best CB there are wrong.im not bout to talk bout my self cuz i dont have to do that cuz people already no wat i can do and u no wat i dont have to prove myself to no one so BRANDEN SMITH is THE BEST PLAYER IN THE STATE AND THE NATION #1 B.T.W

I think the all state player should be Philip Lutzenkirchen, the tight-end from Lassiter High School. I’ve seen this kid play and played against him. He is a fast and strong guy. When he gets the ball, trying to stop him takes more than one guy, TRUST ME. It took a few of our boys just to get him to slow down. He was previously commited to Auburn, but when Tubberville left, he becam the number ONE target in the southeast for college coaches.

I think Chris Hubbard of Carver high School in Columbus Georgia is pound for pound the best Offensive Lineman in the State of Georgia. He is 6’ 5” 250lbs and runs a 4.5 forty, vertical jumps a 36, and has the best hand and feet combo I have seen since Ed King. He made the Georgia sports writers All-State Team, and this should be a no brainer. I also think Angelo Pease of Cairo is the best Athlete in the south. Another no brainer. Thanks!
