Take 10: Things we’re thankful for
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
It’s that time of year again. It’s the time we all give thanks for the wonderful blessings in our lives like having a job, gas prices under two dollars and that Hollywood has decided to make not one, but two sequels to “Twilight.” Just kidding.
The girlfriend drug Take Ten to the vampire lovefest of a film Monday. But fear not. We paid for a ticket to “Quantum of Solace” instead just to spite her. Crappy movies aren’t getting our money. The two hours of painful acting and woeful plot did give us a chance to think about all the good things in our life and all the blessings we’ve had this football season.
Here are 10 things we’re thankful for this football season:
10: Jonathan Davis - We sat through the blistering cold watching Tucker’s linebacker/tailback rush for 198 yards and four touchdowns in the second round of the playoffs last week. The most impressive was a 97-yard scamper with his team backed up on the goalline. Some recruiting services say he’s undersized to be effective at the next level. We just see Bob Sanders running around in a Tiger uniform.
9: Woodstock - What business does a team with no region titles, no state titles and a 6-4 regular season record have in the Class AAAAA quarterfinals? None. But man, it’s fun to watch. We’re thinking Cinderella’s run ends at the hands of Camden County Friday. But thank you Wolverines and Mike O’Brien for giving us a great story.
8: Kacy Stuart - She made headlines earlier in this year for trying to - gasp - play football. We know. Crazy, right? The freshman kicker was dismissed from the New Creation Center Crusaders, a private Christian academy in McDonough, after practicing with the team for two months. We at Take Ten fully support women on the gridiron. It reminds us of Kathy Ireland in “Necessary Roughness,” which is always a good thing, or Becky from “Little Giants.”
7: Rush Propst - Georgia is happy to have the best and brightest coaching minds around. They’ll even take discarded stars. The former Hoover High coach in Alabama (program on MTV’s “Two-A-Days”) went 4-6 in his first season at Colquitt County. The Packers are pushing to get their only reality show on CMT called “Highway 319.” No, not really.
6: Spread offense - Look, it’s got something for everyone. If you’re oldschool and love the wing-T, it’s got the option. If you love to fling the ball, it’s got that, too. That’s assuming your school runs it well. And you can get it for just a couple thousand from the booster club to the pocket of Tony Franklin. The fired Auburn offensive coordinator will be coming out with is follow-up book, “Fourth Down, and I swear Chris Todd can make this” very soon.
5: YouTube - We live in a digital age. But without the video streaming Web site, we would have never seen some of the year’s best plays. How many of you were rolling out of the house to go see Centennial at Lassiter? Didn’t think so.
4: WAGA Fox 5 “It’s in your face” hands - We’re a sucker for a good marketing idea. The kids seem to like it, and it’s given us reason to push for more slogans for the AJC’s high school sports team. How about… “AJC Sports: It’s in your brain,” “AJC Sports: Black and white, and read all over” or my favorite “AJC Sports: We got the funk.” I’m not sure where the funk came from, but I assure you, we have it.
3: Newnan - Look, we like underdogs. The undefeated Cougars went from feel-good story a year ago to a real threat for their first state title in Class AAAAA. They’ve destroyed teams this season. Newnan has allowed 22 points all season and handed teams six-straight shutouts and eight overall. Can’t wait for that North Gwinnett game.
2: Championships in the Dome - You may disapprove, but title games deserve to be on the biggest stage. Both teams have worked hard to be there and no one should get homefield advantage. That’s our take. That and we’re hoping for free Chick-fil-A this year for media.
1: You - Don’t get sentimental on, but where would we be without our readers? Sure, sometimes your comments frighten us. Most of the time they’re enlightening or just funny. We appreciate them nonetheless. Like they say, if a tree falls in the woods and no one is around to read it, does it make a sound? Well, something like that. Happy Thanksgiving, everybody.
Go on. Take Ten. What are you most thankful for this holiday season? Who are the players, coaches, teams, mascots or whatever that you’re thankful for? Let us know. Here’s you’re chance to voice your opinion.

Glen,
We are especially thankful for another season of quality football (without too many serious injuries) and someplace to rant and rave about it.

Jeff: (I know you’ll be here sooner or later) Just in case you missed it on the other blog, here it is again:
Oh, just one more thing Jeff: I will grant you expert status on Grayson. I will grant you some knowledge of Lowndes, out of fear for the unknown. But come on now, dude, you CAN’T be an expert on Newnan and Camden too, especially with your blathering comment that Newnan would beat Camden or Lowndes!
There’s wishful thinking, and then there’s psychosis.
Oh wait … of course! I get it! You’ve already begun talking about how Lowndes or Camden will lose to NEWNAN (your next adopted team) because you know you need a back-up after Gray-sun loses to Lowndes.
BTW, is Jeff the ONLY Graysin fan out there, or the only Graysom fan out there bold/dumb enough to publicize his ridiculous rantings about the Lambs?
Hokey play of the day: Lowndes’ win over Greysom will be … (drum roll please) … The Silence of the Lambs.
Ok, too much bourbon.

Just read recently that Lowndes has won 17 straight play-off games. Wow, was I impressed until I read in the same article that only once in those games have they played on an opponents home field. Where’s the * behind that record?

Oh no, the infamous “Anti-home-field-advantage” monster has resurfaced on this blog. Hey buddy, I give you credit for trying to invent new ways to justify in your mind why Lowndes is so good. It can only be that terrible home-field advantage.
Why don’t you take your crusade to college and NFL games and see if they will let you make all of their games played on a neutral field.

Hey Jeff … bad news pal. Just watched the Atlanta WSB weather. He said all of the rain will be cleared out of Atlanta by about 1:00 Friday at it moves to the south/southeast. And temps in the high 50s Friday, with lows only in the mid 40s Sat am.
Guess you’ll have to invent a new statistical factor as to why you think your Lambs can play with Lowndes. And I can hear it now, a new excuse … “we lost because it didn’t rain”!

Because of my job/travels and the early Kell Dome games, I have had the opportunity to see Lowndes & Newnan twice each, Camden, Grayson, PRidge, Coffee and Woodstock once each. I only missed NG out of the final 8. Lowndes, Newnan and Camden are clearly the top three, with PR and Coffee leading the next wave. Of the top three, Newnan is the biggest & most physical, Lowndes the fastest (barely over Camden) and Camden the best balance of speed and power. Any one of those three can take the title on any given night. If I had to pick, I’d take the Vikings. I plan to head over to Gwinnett again this Friday as they continue their quest to repeat. It is a shame that any of the other two teams will not be wearing a ring.

**what it comes down to is the dedication and hard work these players put forth both on the field and off. the sacrifices made both by them and their coaches year round to be the best separates the winners not where they play!
the success of any program comes from their leadership coupled with the above. there is a coach whose program and former program presently are both top ten nationally in two different states. these programs are winning everywhere they play! they are home on the field.
i also believe that ever year until this one the semifinal game in the dome could hardly be considered home for a south ga team. maybe though since we are there so often.

Thank you vike king for proving yourself wrong. Do you actually think before responding? For the college conference’s that have a championship game, they ARE played on neutral fields. And the bowl games are played on neutral fields (unless you’re Southern Cal playing in the Rose Bowl). You been living under a rock? And by-the-way, the home field advantage does not only apply to Lowndes. Do you really think there is not an advantage to playing on your home field…ask any coach where they would rather play a play-off game. Duh…

I saw Mr. Propst in action this year. Whatta coach.
One call didn’t go his way and he spent the next 15 minutes bickering with any and every referee he spotted. In the meantime, Colquitt completely fell apart. By the time he started coaching again (if he ever actually did), they were so far behind, it didn’t matter.
I give Propst four years at Colquitt. This year for the people to believe he’s the best choice. Two years of him being the best choice as a winning team has the tendency to override character flaws in coaches. Lastly will be a disastrous fourth year with a total meltdown fueled by his temperament.

OK, ::: P’RIDGE vs COFFEE, i think the ridge will win this hard fought game between 2 great teams… this battle will be won by the d#… 17-10. either way 1 team goes on and the other made the ELITE8… N.GWINN vs NEWNAN, im going with newnan on this 1. well balanced on both sides of the ball + size and speed will be to much for N.GWINN. just remember ELITE8 is a great season 28-14… GRAYSON vs LOWNDES, the rams have been under- estimated all season and have won every game, problem is they have to play flawless football against a flawless team to even stand a chance.. lowndes appears to have it all..31-17 WOODSTOCK vs CAMDEN, woodstock has to play the game of a lifetime to win. but i dont think they stand a chance @ the den. good luck though 24-7… THIS IS JUST MY OPINION AND IS NOT INTENDED TO HURT ANY1’s FEELING’s… ANYTHING CAN HAPPEN ON ANY FRIDAY NIGHT TOO OR FOR ANY TEAM…

Quiet morning, beautiful day, been sippin on coffee and doin a little research…actually alot of research. Been lookin at schedules, scores, highlight reels, head to head competition, rosters…been quite a busy morning actually, but I rather enjoy this kind of stuff. ANYWAY, as I posted yesterday, I am not a Lowndes fan, just a football fanatic. I will tell you this…I predict that Lowndes will destroy Grayson tomorrow nite and the people of that community are gonna walk out of that stadium in complete shock. They have no idea what they are up against. As a footnote, Camden, Coffee or Newnan would all three beat this Grayson team rather handily. I am not a fan of any of the afforementioned teams , just a fan of football. Mark my words, this game has the potential to get ugly.

I agree with inthatrenches on this one. Everyone has underestimated the Cougars all season and every game Newnan has not only prevailed but demolished and all of these teams we have beat arent jokes. Some of the teams Newnan slaughtered were terrible but others were good, even great, teams. So, win Newnan wins state I cannot wait to hear the excuses from the Grayson fans. Yes, thats right Grayson will beat Lowndes and their 1 dimensional offense!

I am truly thankful to have lived long enough to see a truly great team at my high school Newnan High. I’m highly confident in our success but I will let our opponents tell our story as I will not argue with people who have not seen us play. If it makes you feel better to believe we are not as good as our record then go ahead. Don’t be surprised when we come to your town and put it to you. That’s what we do.

okay lowndes folks here we go, you guys sit on these blogs on here and rant and rave about how great your football team is and how they will destroy everyone in their path, that may be true, but i believe grayson has a shot. if we can shut down greg reid and put the vikes out on a couple of 3& outs and capatalize on that, grayson has a chance. if not, it’ll be a tight game, graysons for real, legit defense and offense. ive watched about every video on greg reid on his flashy 80 yd scampers, and have to say that it was the poorest attempt at tackling ive ever seen. dont get me wrong though, he’s a great player and can make you pay. all im really trying to say is, dont count grayson out and dont under estimate them, its been a cinderella season and theyre not giving up yet

I believe you guys forgot about the rest of Camden’s season. Yes we are in a weak region but, we killed hoover (who is the team they have been, as we were their only loss), we dominated Columbia County and we beat NSWR who is in the best region in the state. Woodstock? A win unless Camden comes in overly cocky. Newnan, if we get past Woodstock I hope you bring your A game. I want to see another good game with like the game against NSWR, they had good fans and the game was excellent.

WOODSTOCK FANS? Are you kidding me? ‘Woodstock should handle Camden.’ Get real if you believe that you really need some help mentally. ‘IMO Woodstock has beaten better teams than Camden.’ What team would that be cause I know yall aint beat Lowndes or Newnan, the only other teams worth mentioning this year with a legit shot. And to the Newnan fans, The last time yall played us was my 10th grade year and we blew yall out 50-0 so I hope yall have stepped the game up, which it looks like you all have so we will be the judge next week after yall beat North Gwinett (From experience at a defensive camp at UWG they are horrible on the defensive side of the ball, they had some big soft dudes on the D-line that were no better than the ones in our region and thats real!). But back to yall at Woodstock, I’ll have a box of tissues for you its gonna be a long ride home after yall get stomped out of the WILDCAT DEN!! have yall ever seen 9,000 plus at a football game? Ok Y’all
East Paulding is not going anywhere. Homet, HeadEast, Big T. this is for you guys.
Let’s Preface this(I’m DRUNK RIGHT NOW).
Todd, Denise, Jerry: call me corney if you want but I need to tell you that I have absolutely loved hangin with you guys for the past several years. The football bond we’ve formed is unique, and I know you guyes understand that. From the kids we all have and followed in dance, band and coloor guard, it is cool the we all share that football experience that has been EP football.
To everyone else: This is something only the few three or four of us share,,EP, is are not merely a good team with good fans, we are the examples of the cornerstones of what it takes for a program to progress from good to great(Lowneds, NSWR, and Grayson). We need to keep the faith and keep supporting EP. I will be.
Jozie says she loves EP, cried when they lost to Harrision, was mad when they lost to Woodstock, and felt for the seniors when they sucombed to Grayson.
Last words for the season:
Mr. Gonosz: In all of my life and coaching days, I have to say the you are a unique gift to the football world. Use the gift, and give that heart to a deserving college program. You are the absolute epimtomy of Georgia High School Football. I’ll be following you:

I do not remember seeing anybody from Grayson say they would win hands down. I think they all have said if the stars line up right they have a shot. I think we are all realist when it comes to Lowndes being the #1 team in the state. During the season I predicted that Grayson could go undefeated until they met Lowndes or Camden. I will add Newnan to that list, they are looking tough too. Coffee and Peachtree Ridge would give Grayson a tough fight and would be close and go either way. And I definately think Grayson could take out North Gwinnett. Tough draw in the 3rd round for Grayson. Looks like weather may not be a factor so Grayson has to try to keep it close or they are done. Hope Lowndes has a safe trip up and that it is not a one sided game. I want to at least be entertained through the 4th quarter. Hope everyone has recovered from the Turkey overdose!!! Good luck to all teams tonight.

One feel-good story there wasn’t room for in the top 10 - Meadowcreek broke its 4+-year losing streak early in the season against Duluth. The Mildcats had beaten Meadowcreek for HEIR only win in in each of the past two seasons, making the Mustangs’ win that much sweeter.
Naturally, once reality set in, Meadowcreek cruised to a 1-9 record, but the Mustangs’ band played on anyway!

Being a Gwinnett County fan (Brookwood), I am a bit biased but not foolish. My humble thoughts are that Lowdnes and Camden will meet in the Championship. They both have too much talent and speed. I wish that they got too cocky and slip up but that won’t happen during the playoffs. I still want to say great year to some of the other teams: N Gwinnett, Newnan, Grayson, and Peachtree Ridge. I pray everyone have safe travels.
