AJC Football Predictions: Woodstock keeps rolling; Grayson tops E. Paulding

You remember that girl that you were dating that really liked you a lot more than you liked her? Everything was just a little bit greener in her eyes than yours. She really wanted you to meet her parents and couldn’t understand why you never took her around your friends. No matter what you were going to do, you were just going to hurt her.

The last four weeks of the high school football season are a lot like that. You can’t win in this situation when you are picking winners and losers. By this time of the year, most all of the teams are deserving of where they are, and all have worked hard to get to the second round. There are fans that are hard to like sometimes, but most of these are good kids and you hate to see them at the end of the game with their heads down and tears rolling down their faces along with their sweat.

Feel good, Part 1 — Now, I’m not one to brag, but who else picked Cherokee teams to go 1-1 in the first round of the AAAAA playoffs? O.K., so I picked the wrong teams, but Cherokee did go 1-1 last week.

Even though he would never say it, you have to think that Woodstock coach Mike O’Brien walks around with a big smile on his face most of the time. After winning a state title at Valdosta, O’Brien was fired for, well, not being the second coming of Wright Bazemore. O’Brien was 70-20-1 at Valdosta, making the playoffs six out of seven years. At Woodstock, he led the Wolverines to their first playoff game in 2005 and their first playoff victory last week against Walton. In Valdosta, two playoff games in six years, well, shoot, you wouldn’t have made it six years. In Woodstock, they are thinking of naming the stadium after him. Keep it rolling, Wolverines. Woodstock’s feel-good story goes on.

Feel good, Part 2 — I’ve got a little insight into coach Chris Parker at Chapel Hill. I had a couple of classes with his little brother at Kennesaw State. Even without the colossal turnaround with the Panthers, Chris still would easily be the Michael Corleone of that family. His little brother — Fredo. The elder Parker is without a doubt the state coach of the year right now even if he doesn’t win another game. Which, sadly, he won’t. Coffee rolls.

The rest of AAAAA — One and done, East Paulding? Maybe I was wrong, but I refuse to acknowledge that you guys are legitimate contenders. I don’t really hate the Raiders, but I have to be consistent. Besides, if you have been reading this column all year, you know that Grayson rules the known universe (at least until the Rams have to face a South Georgia team). … Peachtree Ridge might be playing the best football in the state right now, which is good because this is the time of the year when it really matters. Against Harrison, I might give the edge to the Hoyas if they were at home, but take Peachtree Ridge in a close one. … Lassiter won its first playoff game since 1986. It won’t take another 22 years to win again, but it won’t be this week at North Gwinnett. … Northside-Warner Robins at Camden County is the high school equivalent of the SEC Championship game — the winner has the best shot to play for the big title. I’m just an old coastal boy, so I will go with the home team in the battle of military towns.

Out and about — Besides the Northside-Camden game, the one game I would love to see in person would be Sequoyah at Marist. Both teams are disciplined, run-oriented teams with solid defenses. The game starts at 7:30 and could very well be over with by 9:15. It is a battle of ranked teams, but Sequoyah has been good to me this year, so take the Chiefs again. … Hillgrove had its first playoff victory last week, but I can’t see picking / against Tucker two weeks in a row. … Who is doing the valet parking when Holy Innocents’ and Wesleyan meet tonight? Wolves roll on. … Jefferson has been the whipping boy in this column for the past couple of weeks, and it probably isn’t deserved, but the lack of competition that the Dragons played in the regular season catches up this week against Lovett. … I’m feeling the Calhoun love up in Northwest Georgia. Take the Jackets over Westminster this week and I’ll take them in the Dome.

Not surprised you picked Camden over Northside. After all, you missed one-third of your picks last week, why go 100%this week? Northside 21 Camden 17.

Re: “I might give the edge to the Hoyas if they were at HOME…” Re: “Northside-Warner Robins at Camden County … so I will go with the HOME team in the battle of military towns.” GHSA get the playoffs on neutral fields. And for you numb-nuts out there that does not mean the GHSA determines but instead the two teams determine where they are going to play. Get away from this hillbilly home field playoff format; I bet you’re smart enough to do it.

Oh Chris…you just can’t get past that Harrison game…and we let you down with Woodstock but you should have seen the Milton game…

EAST is playing their BEST BALL all year, they have peaked at just the right time and have their #1 QB back on the field…they remember Marist in 06, TCC last year so we’ll save YOU a seat on the lead Charter bus for the trip to LOWNDES!!!

THE CANNON IS LOADED and RAIDER NATION IS COMING!!!

Prediction EAST 24 / GRAYSON 10

SATURDAY headline Chris…EAST PAULDING TWO AND THEY’RE STILL NOT THRU!!!!

By Raider From the Start

November 20, 2008 6:14 PM | Link to this

Whew! That’s a relief! I was worried that I had to go to Grayson and sweat out another win for East. Now that Chris has picked us to lose, I can just sit back and let it happen. I don’t have to worry about the fans yelling “Another raider first down!” so often either. Maybe I’ll have more room to spread out in the stands. I’m sure other East fans will read this and stay home….No, wait a minute…! Chris didn’t you pick us to lose last week too? Oh crud! You might be wrong two weeks in a row! I bet people will realize this and show up to watch the game. For goodness sake, the team might still think the can win! Oh well, I guess we’ll have another wild crowd cheering the team, fans yelling, cowbells ringing. Just general mayhem.I guess we’ll have to leave it up to those boys on the field who find a way to win even when Chris says they aren’t legitimate contenders.Go East, get some tomorrow night! BOOM!!

FOR CHRIS

Besides, if you have been reading this column all year, you know that Grayson rules the known universe (at least until the Rams have to face a South Georgia team).

What they “rule” is 2 teams they beat with winning records (Parkview & Brookwood) other than that they “ruled” teams barely playing .500 !!!

Chris who? Northside 17 - Camden 14

Well, Eagle Fan you are a lot more realistic than some of your fellow Northside fans who think this is just going to be a walk in the park. Northside could very well win, and I easily think this is the best game in the state.

Oh Chris…you just can’t get past that Harrison game…and we let you down with Woodstock but you should have seen the Milton game…

Exactly, Homet, I saw Milton play earlier this year, and I don’t judge them to be a championship contender either.

Whew! That’s a relief! I was worried that I had to go to Grayson and sweat out another win for East. Now that Chris has picked us to lose, I can just sit back and let it happen

The AJC has Marist ranked over Sequoyah but says they are going to lose??? Marist is going to win. All Sequoyah has is a good running back and last time I remember Marist beat teams like Tucker, Chamblee, and SWD, who had these types of players.

fitzgerald is healthy again, and there is no-one in AA that will be able to stop this well oiled wing-t offense, and brooks county fitz is gunning for you. GO PURPLE HURRICANES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

By Region 8AAAAA

November 20, 2008 7:49 PM | Link to this

Even though Grayson beat Brookwood and Pukeview this year does not mean much. Region 8AAAAA is ultra weak this year. Grayson is not that strong and very limited on the offense they run. They beat two below average Brookwood and Pukeview teams by a combined 5 points. Wow, impressive. They may win one more but actually hope they win at least two more. Maybe they can get Lowndes off their home field for once. The Warner Robbins school will not stay close with Camden. So I predict the 3AA, or is it 3AAA, or 3AAAA champions will smoke (as in embarass) the WR representives. In fact there is a good chance there will only be one 1AAAAA school standing after tomorrow night…let’s hope.

By King of Paulding

November 20, 2008 7:56 PM | Link to this

East Paulding coach John Reid is a joke. This guy knows nothing about big-time football. His offense is average at best, and his defense rolls over easier than a prom date. Sure, it is great that he’s been able to win a few games in the region and take away the perception of EP as the doormat of the region, but the fact remains that he can’t win against quality teams. He’s been out-coached and out-classed in every big game since he’s been the head coach at EP. The funniest thing is that he’s the cockiest prick you will ever meet. The last time I checked, he’s a high school coach in a backwoods north Georgia county- if that’s something to be cocky about, then there’s something wrong with you. His departure from EPHS will be a step in the right direction to building a quality, classy high school sports program.

Ok, Mighty Lions! You can do this!! Chris C, put those sack dancin’ shoes on and get to boogie’n! Mitchell, we all know you can make those feet go where they need to! The Botts Brothers, Connor-squared, Juan… play it like you mean it! Nick… Buona sorte e mantenere la fede! (Good Luck and Keep the Faith!) And of course I can’t forget T-Mac…how many times have you been Hog of the Week now Trevor? Hit’em hard T, hit’em hard. All you other Lions (I’d name you all if I could) play this game like we all know you can… with everything you’ve got! Watch the turnovers…try not to make any and try to capitalize on any that Harrison makes. Remember, slow and steady wins the race. Don’t hurry. Stay focused. You’ve 60 minutes to do this and to do it right! Everyone now knows that the Lions ARE the real deal. Go out there and show them all just how REAL you are!

I’ll see you there… just look for the Band Mom who’s yelling and cheering her head off. That’ll be me!

I think the prediction for the Brunswick and Griffin game. Should be the other way around Griffins gonna be the team thats gonna upset a lot of teams in this playoff seriously. They have plenty of speed I mean in the running backs, quarter backs, their whole defense even their offensive line. Especially them two linesmen #57 and #75 they are some beasts they come off the ball hard and low. Also if you get in the way of #20 he will run you over but on the other side griffin defense has that #2 who flies around everywhere its like he never gets tired and #27 & #47 are some true play makers they make the right plays at the right time. I predict Griffin win 33-12.

Hey Whitfield, thanks for picking Marist to lose. As a Marist fball player, that makes me wanna beat em more. Sequoya’s been good to you in the past? Then, I guess that means u wont pick against Marist next time. When we shut down there running back, we’ll run up the score. Their defense is nothing special. They are a very good team and very well disciplined dont get me wrong, but the War Eagles will win this game.

It is apparent that you have not been to any of the East Paulding games the past three years. Including the time we went to the Dome. Oh wait…. did Grayson make it to the Dome.. Nope. SO we will see after the game this friday who are “quality contenders”. Hope your watching the game you bias alumni prick!!!!!!!!!! Chris, I mostly agree with all of your AAAAA picks except the Camden/NSWR game, and possibly the Tift/Newnan game (1-AAAAA prejudice I guess.) Unless NSWR turns it over, shanks a punt, or fails to cover on kicks, I don’t see Camden scoring. NSWR won’t score much either. One poster questioned whether or not Bacon will play. If he’s out, it might be a 0-0 tie, and overtime.

You might be missing the Ware/Mt.Zion Jonesboro game also. Ok Ok Fellow Hwy 84 fans, don’t crucify me! I’m just not sold on Ware.

I’m hoping Harrison and EP win. Kinda poetic justice. It seems whichever way you pick with these teams, the opposite happens. But, if they win, we could host thru the semi’s, so I’ll be rooting for the Hoyas and Raiders.

I hope everyone that’s traveling tomorrrow night get’s home safely. Especially Sportsfan31313! Sorry you will have such a sad trip home! Gooooo Vikings!!!!!!!!!!!!!

To BooHissHomeFieldPlayoffAdvantage Come on get real. If all the playoff games were moved to nuetral sites, who would work security at the games? Who would be in the press box calling the game? Who lines off the field? Who would run he concession stands? Who would cook the burgers and hot dogs? Where would the refs come from? Who would provide the footballs? Who cleans up the next day? Who hauls off the garbage?

Football pays the bill for all other sports. Teams count on having a playoff game every now and then, hopefully real often. Their booster clubs and touchdown clubs usually run the concessions. Those organizations are critical for a teams success. They need those playoff games too!

Your suggestion is ludicrous at best, ill advised, and not reasonably thought through. I’m sure coaches at every school in every classification would think it is literally stupid.

Buford may very well get another undefeated season and a state title, but I don’t think rolling will be part of it. It won’t be nearly as easy as it has been the last two years. Not saying Buford isn’t very good, just that this might be the best quality all around in AA that I have seen in a while.

Let’s see how to explain this so you can understand it….no I don’t think that is possible. Let’s do a comparison instead. Georgia has eight regions in each of the five classifications which puts a total of 160 teams in the playoffs. Texas has 32 districts (same as a Georgia region) and they put over 500 teams in the playoffs for all classifications. 500+ schools in a state that is over 800 miles deep and wide can play neutral fields each round of the playoffs but a p** ant size state like Georgia can’t do it with 160 teams? Like I said in my original post, maybe Georgia isn’t smart enough to do it. And to toss in a little extra comment just in case you think people would not travel to neutral sites. It was Trinity Euless and South Lake Carroll that sold out Texas Stadium for, I think, a semi-final game a few years ago. When was the last time a Georgia high school game had 50,000+ in attendance? 20,000 to 30,000 games are not unusual. All on neutral fields. If Georgia wants to compare themselves to the best they need to wise-up and level the playoff format. Championships in Georgia should come with an * for ‘Home Field Champion’. PS If you want to know how they handle the logistics why don’t you go out to Texas and find out. For each game during the play-offs the two teams have it all figured out on the weekend prior to that round’s game. Gosh, stay on the porch if you can’t run with the big dogs.

By To Lowndes Fan

November 20, 2008 11:55 PM | Link to this

Correction: The sold out Trinity Euless and Southlake Carroll game example mentioned earlier actually had over 65,000, not 50,000 as stated earlier. Now that is high school football.

The Marist triple option will be effective like always, but the passing game with Kyle Farmer will be the difference. The tough competition in Region 6AAAA has prepared Marist well for this post season.

Marist 28 - 21

To Lowndes fan,

Listen man, we don’t give a crap how texas’ high school format is!!!!! Who says georgia has to do it like texas???? What’s the big deal about home field advantage????…you have it in the pro football, basketball, and baseball playoffs!!! That’s what makes the regular season and winning your region relevant!!! I am sooo sick of people talking about how things are done in other states!!!! If you don’t like how we do the playoffs in the great peach state, leave and go else where!!!! What…are we suppose to feel inferior b/c of our playoff formatt???….I don’t think so my friend….plueeze!!!!

To all of you AA fans, don’t sleep on brooks co.!!!! Just a word of warning…trust me, they are loaded on both sides of the ball!!! They are so balanced on offense and run out of multiple formations. Their running back #2, is fast as any running back in the state…just go to youtube and check them out…what an impressive football team!!!! Remember, they beat a 2nd round AAAAA playoff team, tift co.(region 1-AAAAA I might add) 35-7!!!!

I say Marist over Sequoyah. Marist has it all working for the playoffs. Rome over Sandy Creek, Sandy Creek seems to have trouble scoring. Rome in a close one. Norcross over Woodstock. Norcross will be able to keep the score down and push past the Wolverines.

CW,

Some of the folks wanted me to make the trek to Winnersville tonight. I’ve seen tailcuttings before. I know what they look like. Got a bet going that the mighty blue and gold will score against Lowndes. Won’t stop Lowndes, but the Tigers may be able to score. I pop you an email soon. (BTW, getting a skybox for Tech-Georgia.)

Jaybo:

I’m with you on the BS comparisons to other states…..As Lewis Grizzard said, “If you don’t like it here, Delta’s ready when you are!”

The one team I hate to see go down this week has the deck stacked against it this Friday. North Oconee went 8-2 in its first season of region play after going 9-1 in nonregion last year, losing to Jefferson 17-16 when a PAT hit the upright in the last minute. North O travels to Buford Friday, and I’m afraid it’s going to be a long night and longer ride home for the Titans…..

To King of Paulding

Wow……you have got to be as ignorant of a poster as I’ve read on here. A personal attack like that means one of three things.

1) You don’t know John Reid. 2) You know him and think you have for whatever reason ben wronged by him in some sort of way………or 3) You are just wanting to stir things up.

Personally….I think it is probably #2, and this is something you need to just simply deal with.

If you take Coach Reid on the merits of the teams he’s worked with, and keeping in mind it is his entire staff not just him that os coaching this team, I think you’ll find that regardless of your personal tainted opinion of him, that the numbers speak mighty well for his job performance.

33-5. RECORD. A complete change in the culture of the student athletes that play at EP, a community that is excited about the transformation that is taking place, and in general an overall sense of pride. Given the economy these days, I think he’s done a hell of a job for not only the team but this entire county.

His teams have beat, Rome twice, Sequoyah twice, Starr’s Mill, Mays, been to the playoffs three straight years, and have a 9-2 record their first year playing with the ‘big boys’.

Give everyone on the blog a break and simply DON’T post again. Your holier than though, dispicable, personal attack on a High School football coach is absolute IGNORANT and an insult to everyone’s intelligence that reads or posts here.

wow and i thought the whole texas-ga-fla debate was put to rest on the field…if they play their playoff games on neutral sites, then why in the hell have a regular season? this guy is pointing out the obvious. we all know texas is bigger than georgia, has more high schools, and plays their playoff games at neutral sites. WHO CARES the fact is and ill say it again, BUFORD H.S (GA) won ON THE FIELD IN THE MIGHTY STATE OF TEXAS AGAINST MANSFIELD (TX). the conversation stops there CAMDEN and NORTHSIDE waxed teams from FLA where?? ON THE FIELD!!! tell one of those might teams from tx to go grab one set of steer balls and hop on a plane (LIKE BUFORD), come to atlanta, and prove us wrong ON THE FIELD!!! until then, brag about how its done in tx, and we will continue to whip tx a$$ ON the field!!!

Wow!…it finally got here…It’s friday and time for some FOOTBALL…

COUNTDOWN CLOCK IS TICKING for RAIDER FOOTBALL IN GRAYSON…Just over 12 hours and counting!!!

We have had some great postings this week, a good time “needling” each other…as usual a few STUPID posters like nomo, and those talking about hurting players and sending them to the hospital. I guess that just goes with the way things are today and we have to look past them.

Here’s hoping we have great games across the state of GEORGIA tonight (AND THAT’S GEORGIA NOT TEXAS for those who are getting confused)

To: “KING OF PAULDING” … I don’t think you even LIVE in Paulding County or have visited EAST PAULDING. If you had seen the turnaround at this school in the last 3 years under the leadership of Coach Reid and his staff then you would understand.

He has instilled a pride in winning in both the players, the school and the community. Has he won ALL the big games, of course not…has he made EVERY call correct, of course not, but what he has done is obvious to everyone…EAST has gone from the whipping boy in AAAA to a CONTENDER in AAAAA in only 3 SHORT YEARS!!! A trip to the Dome, a UNDEFEATED AAAA Region Championship , and this year going 8-2 in regular season (barely missing another Region Championship)and playing in the second round of the playoffs!!!…

Sounds more like Coach Reid and his Staff are the KINGS OF PAULDING and you are nothing more than the “COURT JESTER”!!…

WHEW!!!…I feel better now…

RAIDER NATION…LET’S GO TO GRAYSON

It will be difficult to beat Marist at Marist. Sequoyah is definitely capable but they would have a better chance if they were the home team. I believe the best hope for Sequoyah is if they can play a mostly penalty free game. Someone else said on here said tough 6AAAA competition has Marist prepared. Well said. Its good to here Marist alum finally speak up.

The only real home field advantage is the travel to the field. Because of that a neutral field will often give an advantage to one team or the other. For example a Atlanta metro team would have the advantage over a Valdosta area team if the field is in Macon or anywhere north of that. Because of that I prefere home fields for the team that earns it, it also will insure a large home team croud earning some bucks for the school. Home field is little advantage if the opposing team is from the same area. For that reason Peachtree Ridge has a slight home field advantage against Harrison, but only because of rush hour traffic which will require Harrison to leave a bit ealier than normal. I doubt it is more than a two point advantage.

JUST REMEBER TEAMS LIKE MARIST AND ALL THE PRIVATE SCHOOLS, “HAS THE BEST TEAMS MONEY CAN BUY” (OR AT LEAST TRY). I WOULD ROOT FOR A COMMY BEFORE I WOULD ROOT FOR A PRIVATE SCHOOL IN GA. THEY SHOULD HAVE A SEPARATE DIVISION LIKE THEY DO IN TENNESSEE. NOT A FAN BUT GO SEQUOYAH AND THEY DO HAVE MORE THAN JUST A GOOD RB.

Hoyas Rock, I can see your point on the home field, and I understand Whitfields point also. I agree Home field has little advantage if any.In all honestesy, If I were an AJC guy picking, I would probally pick Peachtree Ridge. They are playing great football, and have a great team. The Ridge is on a roll, and Harrison has been inconsistant in the last four. PR, you have been fun this week, thanks for the ribbing, and fun trash talk. I know this scares some people, but remember this is a blog, for entertainment purposes. I pray that we have a safe game, free from injuries, and may the best team on the field win tonight.I am sure you will be great host. I can’t wait for some good cold friday night football.Oh yea, one more thing, Somebody UNLEASH THOSE DANG HOYADAWGS!!!!!!

I quote Jeff Herron of the Camden County Wildcats.

“We have to stop the run and make them one-dimensional,” said Herron, whose Wildcats yield an average of 7.0 points per game, third in the state behind only Newnan and Lowndes. “They really don’t have a lot of tendencies, so they keep you off balance. If they are able to run on us, we’re going to have a long night.”

Herron said he is most worried about moving the ball on Northside, which he said fields ‘the biggest high school defense I’ve ever.”

Looks like a problem Camden!!

Maybe Texas football should come with an * (asterisk) because they are to wimpy to win a championship on the others home field. Afraid to leave the state of Texas too aren’t you? Ever stop to think “hero” that you may also have neutral sites because your state is 800 miles wide? Well duh! Here is the way I see it. Texas is 800 miles wide and from South Georgia to Texas border is 800 miles. Come on over “all talk”.

Texas the state of politically correct football because “we don’t want to hurt anybodies feelings now…ya hear!” Those kids might grow up not feeling the love if they had to actually go play another team and overcome the challenge (oh the thought of it!) of beating that team on their own home field. Texas the state where their coaches are actually psychiatrists who had to grow up with the pain of actually playing another team without it being on a neutral site. Texas reminds me of the guy who jumped off the cliff and on the way down called out “everybody do it like meeeeeeeeeeeee!!” Texas the “I wish I was as good as Georgia” want a be’s who keep bashing Georgia football because in their hearts they know they don’t measure up. Texas where the motto is “if you can’t beat em (Georgia)….diss em”.
