AJC Football Predictions: East Paulding falls; St. Pius tops Cartersville

The high school football playoffs are a time when fans like to say throw out the records and forget the rankings. People start talking about heart and community pride.

Well, if that were the case, then I might as well pick Luella to upset top-ranked and undefeated Lowndes because those Lions have a heck of a lot of heart and plenty of community pride. Of course, it just doesn’t work that way.

Every year we have surprises in the playoffs — teams that defy the experts and their seeding to make a deep run in the playoffs. But for the most part, the playoffs usually go exactly as expected. Every now and then you get a No. 4 seed that bumps off a No. 1, but if you go with what is expected, your bracket usually looks pretty good.

We are down to 32 teams in each classification, and over the next five weeks, we are in for a treat which all comes to an end on my birthday. That’s kind of fitting for me since the playoffs during the football season is the best time of the school year as far as I am concerned.

When it comes to picking, the games just get harder and harder, but as coaches like to say, it’s time to take things to another level. In the last week of the regular season, the fearless football forecaster was 10-6 with some pretty interesting region title games on the line. For the year, I am 79-39.

Let’s get it on!

SmAAAAAck Talk: For the state’s largest classification, there has been tons of talk about Region 5 vs. Region 6. This paper has said that Region 5 is the second strongest in the state, but I am still trying to determine if the region is all very strong or all very mediocre. This first round will answer a lot.

Woodstock made the playoffs when everyone else had counted it out, but winning at Raider Valley isn’t an easy task. Walton rolls to the second round. The other Cherokee County team — Etowah — is in much better position against Lassiter. Despite their ESPN highlights, the Trojans will find a defense up to the task and a split-back veer that is being run almost to perfection right now. Cherokee goes 1-1.

Harrison has been a favorite whipping boy in this column this year, but despite its loss last week, it still managed to claim home field. Kell is one of the best stories of the year under first-year coach Derek Cook. If Harrison allows Kell to stay close, the Longhorns will nip them. But Harrison is healthier this week and at home, and that makes the difference.

The other game in this clash of regions pits Toney Williams and Milton hosting East Paulding. I’ve lost faith in East Paulding, and Williams is the kind of running back that can hurt the Raiders. One and done for the Raiders? Yep.

Gwinnett Greatness: Lots of Gwinnett games this week, and in most of them, I’m still picking a Gwinnett winner even when I am picking a Gwinnett loser.

Parkview managed the No. 2 seed from its region, but the more I look at that region, the weaker it seems. Take Norcross in a mini-upset, while North Gwinnett takes out Brookwood, but it will be a lot closer than some might think.

Peachtree Ridge, which proved me wrong big-time last week, rolls on to face Harrison, and, of course, Grayson is the best team I have never seen.

Out and about: One of the most interesting games in the first round in Class AAAAA is Chapel Hill hosting Windsor Forest. Chapel Hill is trying to build a reputation as a good team, while Windsor Forest will try to shed that really bad reputation that haunts Region 3 teams besides Camden County. The feel-good story of AAAAA keeps going another week for the Panthers. … I’m very, very tempted to pick a Region 1-AAAAA sweep, but I just can’t. I’ll say that everyone else wins, but Coffee falls after that long drive to Stephenson. Chalk up wins for Lowndes, Northside-Warner Robins and Tift County.

Fast and dirty: Sprayberry over Cedar Shoals. … Athens goes 0-for-2 in the picks as Sequoyah takes a victory on the road against Clarke Central. … Washington County brings the House of Pain to metro for a win over Woodward. … St. Pius bounces back to take care of Cartersville. … Upset Special of the Week (served up steaming with two sides): Coosa drops undefeated Jefferson. You can throw out the records and rankings on that one.

c’mon Chris!! Stephenson over Coffee? I’ll agree that Stephenson has a stellar defense, but at the same time, Coffee is probably the most underrated team in AAAAA. Their 3 losses have come against powerhouses Lowndes and Northside, to go along with a nail-biter against a schizophrenic Tift County team. When all cylinders are clicking, Coffee easily has the best offense in 1AAAAA (and I’m a Lowndes alumn). I think they will have too many weapons for Stephenson. 31-24 Coffee

Chris

I hope you are prepared to deal with the wrath from Homet and his band of merry men when it comes to the EP pick. They will probably aim the pop gun toward your office. As far as the Hoyas go, thanks for the vote of confidence but like in coaching, votes of confidence usually mean the end is near and yours has been the kiss of death for the Hoyas this year. Please issue a retraction with the nod given to the Longhorns.

c’mon Chris!! Stephenson over Coffee?

I told ya I wanted to pick a 1AAAAA sweep, but just couldn’t do it. You are right that Coffee might be the best 7-3 team in AAAAA, but Stephenson isn’t a slouch team. If you hadn’t lost to that bipolar disorder of a team in Tifton, I would have picked ya to win.

Wish you’d gone against Sprayberry again. We love it when folks overlook us.

Sorry, after that spanking of Rome, you opened my eyes.

I hope you are prepared to deal with the wrath from Homet and his band of merry men when it comes to the EP pick. They will probably aim the pop gun toward your office.

We have a sophisticated defense system setup on Marietta Street to keep would-be terrorists and East Paulding fans at bay! That’s payback for Homet claiming I was trolling the blog for dates! HAHA. Seriously, though, I just think those two regions are pretty similar and Region 5AAAAA was 1-3 last year in the first round.

I agree with the Harrison prediction, but if you really wanted them to win wouldn’t you have picked against them Chris?

I guess that is the logic that would go along with my Harrison picks this year, but contrary to anyone’s belief, these aren’t picks based on who I want to win, but who I think will win.

c’mon Chris!!! I’ll talk with you after the Tift vs MLK game on Saturday; I’m expecting an upset!

Tift beating MLK IS the upset. MLK is the host and higher-seeded team.

P-ridgefn its hog wash; Stephenson is ready to play, rain, sleet or snow. I’d be highly surprise if Coffee scored 31pts on Stephenson 1AAAAA guru; I don’t think they have given up more than 21 in the last three seasons. That includes the last time they played Coffee also. I think this game may be close if Stephenson’s offense struggles.

By 1AAAAA Guru

November 13, 2008 3:51 PM | Link to this

Let’s face it: Tift County truly is a schizophrenic team. They get dominated by 1AA Brooks County 35-7 (not to discredit them, but they are AA), then play the game of their life against Lowndes (28-14 loss that could’ve went either way), and lay a huge egg against Northside (20-0 at halftime). Hopefully, Tift will represent 1AAAAA with the team they fielded for the Lowndes game, except for the losing part :)

By 1AAAAA Guru

November 13, 2008 3:55 PM | Link to this

Chris, if Coffee wouldn’t have “lost to that bipolar disorder of a team in Tifton,” they wouldn’t be playing Stephenson. :)

By 1AAAAA Guru

November 13, 2008 4:02 PM | Link to this

Jblue, I’m gonna have to disagree with you. Coffee put up close to 400 yards of total offense (to go along with 3 turnovers, which cost them the game) against a Northside defense that I considered the best in the state with the likes of Abry Jones and Eric Fields. If Coffee can play a complete game minus the turnovers, I can see them pulling this one out. However, with that being said, if they go up to Stephenson and play like they did against Lowndes (they seemed very intimidated), Stephenson will win.

I think the 1-AAAAA predictions are fair. Coffee vs. Stephenson is a tough one to call either way. If Coffee does win, that’ll just serve as evidence of the strength of the region.

It’s a shame Chris hasn’t seen Grayson play. He likes a strong defense. I can’t wait to see our running back, Ean Pemberton play against Lowndes in round 3. This little man is 5’4” and 140 lbs, runs a 4.5, and is impossible to tackle because you don’t see him until he has already done his move around you.

When you talk about Northside’s defense it is one of the best. However, the Macon Telegraph and the Middle Georgia coaches poll rate Westside-Macon #1 in the area as a team. They have averaged a winning score of 44—3 with most of the points given up late in the game. They shutout TCC while allowing 3 first downs and 70 total yards.

COFFEE is overated and so is Tift County. Both very weak teams and I suspect poorly coached.Coffee could not even defeat Northside at home. Even with Northside coming off a humiliating defeat on the road to Lowndes County. In fact Northside was playing on the road for the fourth time out of the last five weeks. Northside had several starters not even playing on defense and I happen to know Abry Jones was far from 100 percent for that game. Tift County looked like a joke playing against Northside. And they lost to a not so great AA team from Brooks County. I am familiar with football in both Texas and also in California and people if region 1AAAAA is the best this state has to offer FOOTBALL IN GEORGIA is vastly OVER RATED.

And lets also not forget about C.J Dudley who i think can seriouly be considered region4AAAAA best player. C.J has 437 receiving with 4 T.D,74tkls with 5 ints,168 passing with 2 T.D,and also 244 return yds with 2 T.D.!!

In the intro the sports writer said it best, “…and at home, and that makes the difference”. Even a sports writer knows there’s a home field advantage in the GHSA playoffs. GHSA get the playoffs on neutral fields! Keep the seeding but get the games on neutral fields; and why is most of the whinners against neutral fields from south Georgia? What are they scared of? I think the GHSA and schools involved are just to lazy to do what’s best for the playoffs.

All of Gwinnett’s region 8AAAAA teams are going down in the first round. We’re really weak over here this year. It will not be close between BW and NG sorry to say. Grayson is looking ahead and stumbling, Pukeview should not be allowed in the playoffs with what they have pulled over the years in securing players so hopefully they go down and Dacula is just not consistent enough. Turn out the lights, the party is over region 8.

Way to go. Finally someone else that recognizes Texas’ overall domination of high school football! About 10 years ago a lot of schools in Texas got away from the ‘3 yards and a cloud of dust’ offense and went to the spread. You can really see the talent difference when you see some of the better Texas teams play and then come back home and see the better Georgia teams play. Thank goodness our region 1AAAAA is to scared to go west to play. It would be embarassing and a long ride home. Also why do you think a significant number of previous Texas high school QB’s are now leading some of the top college programs? They are being brought up in ‘the system’. Unless we wake up and get onboard Georgia high school football will only fall further behind. And one last item, if i recall there is a successful major GA university that even has one of those Tx high school QBs (and a running back from New Jersey; come on guys, New Jersey? Where’s that GA talent when you need it?)

Funny how you pick Tift Co. over MLK yet dis them at the same time. I have seen them play six games this year and yes they can look very good as well as very bad. This is their 4th straight visit to the state playoffs which includes a trip to the dome in ‘06 so NITRODUST is stupid to say they are poorly coached. Remember 1-AAAAA consistently proves it is the toughest region in the state. In my opinion if MLK can run the ball they will win… however they will get dominated unless they control the ball offensively.

It’s funny how the proponents of Texas football always want Georgia teams to travel there to play. How about we reverse that and let Texas teams come here to play? Buford went to Texas this year and wiped the floor with their opponent. The best teams in Georgia can compete with any other state’s best.

These people from TX should have had their feelings HURT when Buford went out there and spanked one of their own. Thats head to head TX VS GA, no matter how big the school is and how the schools have done so far in 08. A GA team beat a TX team head to head, so until one of those TX teams decides to come to the Dome, please dont start the TX VS GA argument, and why is it you NEVER hear of a TX team going anywhere outside their big state of nothing to play anyone???

After what Buford did, I would hate to see what would have happened had a Lowndes, Camden or Northside went out there.

I’m not going to knock the inhabitants of the Castle there near Tara Cinemas, but I was really speaking more from the point of view of a Chapel Hill team that is having a remarkable season. Like I said, it is a feel good story, and I have a lot of respect for coach Parker.

I am familiar with football in both Texas and also in California and people if region 1AAAAA is the best this state has to offer FOOTBALL IN GEORGIA is vastly OVER RATED.

Thanks for commenting. The Texas football blog is at dallasmorningnews.com.

In the intro the sports writer said it best, “…and at home, and that makes the difference”. Even a sports writer knows there’s a home field advantage in the GHSA playoffs

Hey, if you want the home field advantage, all you have to do is earn it.

They are being brought up in ‘the system’. Unless we wake up and get onboard Georgia high school football will only fall further behind.

Yeah, because college recruiters are avoiding Georgia like the plague?

My thoughts are that I have a few concerns in the play calling but I really feel the talet is there.

Well it doesn’t matter how good the talent is if the playcalling is bad, but that wasn’t my main concern.

Dont know what is happening with the hairless one on the other site. Is the blind one really on here with us? If he is, I think that is awesome.Don’t forget about the girl, you know the one with the Texas name. anyway, this has been way too much fun this year.

EAST Fan Chris said he had lost FAITH not “fate” in EP’s TALENT, not “talet.”

I think the Hoya fan was on the mark questioning Paulding’s educational standards.

to Footballer Lowndes is no different than the East Paulding folks, the NSWR folks, or the fans over in Hinesville, or anywhere else. Everybody’s got good decent, respectable fans and every team has a jerk or two. But hey, most of the time it’s all in fun and I’m sure 99% of the people feel that way. It’s hard not to be too cocky when you’ve won 4 state championships in the largest and toughest classification in GA since 1999. But we try not to be. Our goal is always To go 1 and 0 each week, and improve from last week. That’s Randy McPherson’s motto, and the Lowndes Vikings are dedicated to it.

HoyaDawg is off taking care of business on the home front so I am responding for him. By the way, we are not the same perosn so don’t even go there.

You are so off base about the Hoyas being a one man team with # 21 it is crazy. When does one player block, run, throw passes, catch passes, make all the tackles, etc. In case you have not noticed, the Hoyas lost to a good Etowah with # 21 playing so there goes your theory about if he does not play we lose; if he plays we win.

21 is a very good and important part of the Hoya team and is a great kid yet we also lost other players to injury. As HoyaDawg said a long time ago, all five innjured players we had were two way starters so the net effect is we lost 10 starters. The loss of all of them is what hurt, not just # 21. If you think about it, if your team lost to a one man team what does that say about your team? Not much I would say so I do not think I would press that argument.

Jeff: NSWR had a pretty good RB as did Tift County and Coffee (in fact they have two good ones) and Lowndes’ super fast defense who will hit you in the mouth pretty much shut’em all down. Grayson’s 5-4 RB won’t fare much better. Half of our defense is that fast. But a whole lot can happen between now and then, in fact we could both be playing bouncey ball. Let’s both agree to take’em one at a time, okay?

I remember in ‘99 we were not even ranked after the regular season and got hot in the playoffs and ran the table, after the all time best come back in the GA Dome against NSWR (31-28).

That same thing can occur this year. It could be PeaRidge, NG, or even Tift or Coffee.

Wildmanhoya, first of all my team did not play the Hoyas. I watched on tv you played East and we had a bye. And 21 was the team. If East called better plays and did not kick to 21 (dumb) and should have scouted better and put a spy on 21 you guys would have took a 3rd loss or I think at that time it would have been your first. And to the Etowah game 21 from what I heard did not play as much as he normal and was not 100%. So, yes I still think he is and a lot of other people including some of your own Harrison to do.

The Hoyas should be called the Harrison’s 21’s.

I love it when you pick against us. You’ve picked against us 4 out of the last 5 weeks, and we’ve won them all. We’re going to beat Ridgeland. As a matter of fact, all the region 5AAA teams will win convincingly. You said Mcnair was going to run right over us! It wasn’t even close. Not all. We still have a lot of talent, and we are still good. Basically 3 points from being a #1 seed. Don’t come asking for an interview when we are the last region 5AAA team standing. Don’t get your panties overly excited about Buford beating Mansfield Timberview because Timberview only finished 5-5 this year (and not many people in Texas had even heard of Timberview). Buford was the weakest team of the six invited out of state teams but turned out to be the only winner so we’ll give them that. On the other hand, Buford could beat Lowndes 4 out of 5 times so put that in your pipe and smoke it. Texas did win 5 of the 6 games that weekend. And why would Texas want to go to another state and play….heck they can travel 800 miles and still play in Texas..as in, if your in heaven why leave? If Georgia teams traveled as far as the schools do in Texas during the play-offs they would be playing in south Florida, Mississippi, Kentucky and Virginia but then your mule would die before getting to the games. Also the facilities are second to none and that includes Valdosta’s college-high school shared field. Schools here make a big deal about artificial turf, there are public high schools with only 400 kids that have fields with artificial turf so that’s no big deal. And when was the last time there were 40,000 to 50,000 people at a high school play-off game in Georgia? Football is a lot more serious out there; live with it. And before you tell me also to get my butt back to Texas, I’m a Georgia native but I have seen the light. By the way, I’m a football missionary sent here from Texas to save the football souls of Georgia; to show them the football light and to provide them a path to football glory if they would only CHANGE(actually that’s upgrade) their ways…..’change’ didn’t we heard enough of that @#$%^ word during the election? Amen and good night.

ok….first let me make it clear that i have the upmost respect for GA. Football..theres great powerhouse football towns here…

But im pretty positive that neither Cali., Ohio, Luisiana,,miss.,Georgia,or any other state can compete with FLORIDA football.

Florida cleary has the nations most talent and the only other state that could come close to competing would be Texas.

a St.Thomas Aquanis Vs. trinity would be great,as would a pohokee Vs. Permian, Lakeland Vs. Plano, or Plant Vs. Lake Travis….

im sorry to say it but these powerhouse Ga teams most likely wouldnt be able to compete,or even keep up with even a mediocore Florida team folks.

So Sgt Chris that makes Texas 5-0 against the rest of the world and what against Georgia? I believe that makes Texas 2nd best. Maybe that is why they feel inclined to raid Georgia blogs. Speaking of smoking (based on your post) you are apparantly doing it illegally at this moment and I don’t think the military takes to kindly to that.
The entertainer known as Madonna claims to have seen “the light” too..oh well! Just checked Timberview web site and found only one of your feared Texas teams played Timberview on the same level as Buford. That team was from the same city and didn’t have to travel to Texas to do so. Regarding travel miles they do have airplanes in Texas these days don’t they? I think you have airports because I would think Buford would have had to landed in one. Unless of course they didn’t have to land in one of those 6 man football fields.

Chris, The two games EP lost this year were due to the coach calling a bad game offensively, and failing to get the ball into our offensive weapons. (#32, #20). Thus, not burning clock getting first downs and keeping our defense on the field too long. If he does that tonight against Milton, your right we will lose. But, if he puts the ball in the hands of our playmakers we will win. If 32 and 20 don’t get 15 carries apiece our coach needs commited to the loony bin…

Teams that have defeated East Paulding over the past three seasons are a combined 1 – 3 the week after. Last home loss, Pebblebrook Sept. 29, 2006, the Falcons went onto win 7 more before falling to St. Pius in the second round to finish 9 - 3. Marist, Dec. 8, 2006, lost in the Championship Round the next week to Northside 30 – 6 to finish 13 - 2. TCC, Nov. 30, 2007, lost the next week to Ware County at the dome in the semi-final round 48 – 21 to finish 13 – 1. Harrison, Oct. 24, 2008 lost to McEachern the next week during the regular season 48 – 33 and are now 8 - 2. This is not a good sign for a very game Woodstock team who are 6 – 4 facing 9 – 1 Walton at their place.

On the other hand East Paulding is a combined 4 – 0 after a loss which includes two season openers the next year. This is a new season. Point is, East rebounds very well after a tough loss. The last four loses, Marist, TCC, Harrison and Woodstock were the biggest games in school history at that time. Marist, to advance to the championship round. TCC, for a second straight trip to the dome. Harrison, for Region-5 supremacy. Woodstock, for a second straight region title.

East has a tough task tonight and are 2 – 0 in the first round the past two postseasons. Milton will know we were there. If the Eagles are fortunate enough to move on they most certainly will not get past the second round at Grayson. Once again, tonight is the biggest game in East Paulding history. The Raiders are a # 1 seed that has been relegated to a # 3. We must win the BIG game! We will win the big one if we play like we are capable of playing. Let’s go Raiders!

Woodstock Senior

I need to recheck my post but I don’t THINK I said it was our play calling that LOST the game. I did say “questionable” play calling on 2 different 4th and inches cost us 1st downs and stalled drives. But WOODSTOCK played hard and came to win. EAST should have NEVER let ya’ll hang around as close as they did, and to allow 21 unanswered points, AT HOME, in a game that COST EAST THE REGION CHAMPIONSHIP…I can safely say that game hurt worse than the Harrison loss did.

If you reread my post you will see that I said the fumble with 5 minutes to go cost EAST the winning drive and then after the “D” had stopped Woodstock on 3 straight for ya’ll to go for it on 4th down inside the 15 (+-) was a GUTSY call. That was a GREAT run around the end and that won the game for WOODSTOCK.

Also I would say Woodstock brought one of the louder visitors section crowds we had all year in “THE BONEYARD”!!!!

Good Luck tonight against Walton…let’s all win in Region 5A AAAAA tonight and play again next week!!!

Yo, if Lowndes actually has most of their defense running faster than a 4.5, then they are faster than most top 25 D1 college programs. They play football well, we can all acknowledge that, but they are not all D1 prospects. And once our little man makes his move around your big bad linebackers, we’ll see who wins the footrace in a couple of weeks. Looking forward to a good, competitive, defensive game.

The top half of AAAAA is stacked with Grayson, Lowndes, NHS, and Camden Co. Only one of these teams can make it to the Dome. I’m expecting some good football in the coming weeks. We’ve played (and got spanked) by three of the four teams. Grayson, Lowndes, and NHS all have powerful running games and a stifling defense. My brother says Camden is nothing to play with either. Leave the spread at home because it won’t work with these teams! I’m expecting hard-nose football. My team is not in the playoffs, but I’m expecting a good showing from 1-AAAAA. Good luck and play hard! Bring it back down south!

Given how much time Texas spends on our blogs trying to prove something I question whether you have those either (blogs). Lowndes, 1AAAAA and Georgia football is so good it keeps me going full time and I don’t need to go elsewhere to prove any thing. I do know I-10 goes straight from Texas to just below Valdosta, so give our coach a call and send your best. To keep things simple for you just drive on I-10 till you get to I-75 then be sure to go North on I-75. Once you cross the Georgia line you will see the stadium on the right at exit 18. Really hard to miss. Given how much money we take in at a ball game I don’t think you can pay us enough to come your way.

East (contrary to Chris) will take care of business at Milton.

Harrison (if truly healthy, which I hope) should put some numbers on Kell… but not to be taken lightly. I have a feeling Harrison just might “send a message” with a resounding victory tonight.

Woodstock - whew… the one game I fear the most for Region 5, possible, but not likely against Walton. I suspect that Walton won’t be looking past this one after last week.

The Marist meltdown appears to have refocused Tucker without the pressure of that inflated ranking hanging over them. I don’t believe Whitewater can put the same level of talent out there, but on a sloppy field strange things can happen. Tucker’s biggest obstacle is Tucker. If they look as strong as they did last week, it’s on to round two. (Come on Hillgrove, we want another home game!) If they chalk up a dozen drive killing penalties like they did against SW Dekalb, they’ll be going home.

TO Hornet, Rog and other mis-informed EP Fans

I’m beginning to believe that Jaybo and a few others have it right about the EP fan base. Stop making excuses. One week it is the ‘one man’ team from Harrison, then then the next it is ‘bad offensive coaching’. Give it a break.

Here is a dose of reality for the seasoned EP bloggers: Our team is light on talent, small in stature, and one that has overachieved this year against pretty stiff competion all year long because the coaching staff has kept them motivated and focused, and gets them to play way beyond themselves.

Secondly, we lost at Harrison to the better team, period. We lost to a very scrappy Woodstock team, period. They beat us fair and square.

For the past 3 years we’ve lost 5 games,,,FIVE. That is pretty remarkable, considering the history of the school. Be proud of that fact but not disresptful of the facts or others.

In terms of ‘one man teams’….there are NONE. We have done very well shutting down the one or two stud players that most teams have,,,,,,,,,,,,but it is the combination of those couple of stud players along with avery strong senior led teams that has proven our downfall. Think about it: (Pebblebrook-Spivey, Marist-The White Buffalo, TCC-Debrale, Harrison-Godhigh). All of which had a ton of senior leadersip plus that superstar or two. The anomily in all of this is Woodstock. Not taking anything away from them, but they have no really big names beyond the DT,,,,,,,,but they really simply wanted it more in the second half,,,and my hat is off to them, as I think they will represent the region in a great way.

I’m ready to go see my Raiders face an excited Milton team. Not sure if we can rebound from last week, but if I had to bet, I’d bet on the coaches having them more then ready to play,,,,and if we lose it will be because Milton was the better team,,,,,,,not because of coaching, or this or that.

JUST KEEPING IT REAL

P-ridgefn its hog wash; Stephenson is ready to play, rain, sleet or snow. I’d be highly surprise if Coffee scored 31pts on Stephenson 1AAAAA guru; I don’t think they have given up more than 21 in the last three seasons. That includes the last time they played Coffee also. I think this game may be close if Stephenson’s offense struggles.

I was at the Coffee/Stephenson game in 06, and even though the Trojans were much bigger, the gameplan insisted on trying to beat Stephenson to the edge. Stephenson did not have much offense, but won behind defensive speed and winning the special teams game. I haven’t seen either team this year, but I know not much has changed as far as gameplans go. Will watch for the score. One of the most evenly matched 1 vs. 4 games in AAAAA.

Realistic, If you keeps it real, then i will keeps it real. Great post, and not just because you said Harrison was better, but because you gave some respect. Truthfully, The East team and coaches have earned my respect this year. I predicted East to be 5-5, and without good coaching, hard work, and heck of alot of determination, they very well could be. I think 8-2, in the playoffs, A shot at region title, is pretty dang impressive for this group. The night we played East, I would not say they were the best team we faced, but I will admit they were the hardest hitting team we faced. In my post last week i believe you misinterpited what I said about respect. I was’nt saying that I did’nt respect East, I was saying it did’nt seem to me that Harrison had gotten respect from East. anyway, I really think East will win tonight.

FOR RealisticEP_Fan

There is a HUGE DIFFERENCE in discussing the game and making excuses…If you re-read my post you will see that I have gave both Harrison and Woodstock nothing BUT credit for winning the games against EAST.

With that said, THIS IS A FOOTBALL blog, where we can / should be able to discuss also WHY the game was won or lost. Along with that a bit of good natured “trash talk” gets thrown in and MOST of the bloggers have a good time with it.

Unfortunately YOU & JAYBO and one or two others like to play the “quit whinning you lost” card or jump in with the “get over it the game is over” comment.

I for one think it is fine to say we can disagree with a call a coach might make, or talk about a questionable ref call, or even discuss a teams decision to rely on one particular player to “carry the team”.

I completely agree with you that EAST lost last week to a VERY scrappy Woodstock team, however I disagree that EAST lost to a BETTER Harrison team. I think those two teams were VERY evenly matched up and EAST beat themselves that night.

EAST has had a great run these last few years and Coach Reid and his staff are building a winning tradition any school would be proud of. I for one am simply going with the flow and ENJOYING IT!!!

Don’t make the same mistake with Redlady 27 that a friend of mine made the other day. Following an argument, his lady said she was gonna sleep late the next day and when she woke up there better be a surprise for her in her drive way that would go from 0 to 200 in 6 seconds or less. Sure enough when she woke up and looked at her drive way, there was a big package with a red bow on it. She ran out to get it in her flannel pajamas, ripped it open and found a new set of scales! My beef with your picks… and I only looked hard at your 5A picks. You stayed with the seeds (as you admitted except for Tift Co. and Norcross), your R-1 and R-7 bias) so you are a wimp. Although, I think you called the EP game (much to the chagrin of the EP bloggers/posters) as an upset. Arguably, the seeds can be misleading if you have a dominant region, thus my previous region ranking question.

I can only take issue with your EP pick due to my R-5 bias. I want very bad to pick Woodstock over Walton and think it can happen… but probably wouldn’t bet the paycheck, but I will pick Woodstock to be different. Woodstock is better than their record.

Other thoughts on the lower brackets/picks: Tucker wins big. Glad to see you pick the Thomasville Bulldogs (#2 seed) as I think they will go far in spite of their 6-4 record.

To Hornet

I understand discussions. The loss to Harrison was very tough, and no we probably didn’t play our best game. The reason was most likely due to the pressure of the situation, some untimely bounces, and MOST importantly, the play of the other team. (Yes they were better).

The mere fact that we(you, me, other EP fans, and Harrsion fans) are still discussing a loss from 4 weeks ago shows that what has happened is two things: 1)Any instant rivalry has been created by the kids, game, closeness schools, intensity of coaches, etc. (A good thing) 2)Both teams appear to have “Jumped the Shark” since that game. (A bad thing for this year).

Now that we’ve discussed it, lets put it to rest until Oct of next year, and try and focus on Milton ok.

Any knowledge about Milton, other than the #5 RB?

Woodstock might well beat Walton tonight. I believe that Walton’s starting tailback will miss tonight’s game due to injury and Walton’s defense has been susceptible to giving up some big plays. That said, Walton has a balanced offense and they are at home, which is definitely in their favor.

Chris

Thanks for those kind words, no matter how undeserving, for Region 3 AAAAA. Chapel Hill in a yawner over Windsor Forest (unless CH is really bad). Bradwell could very well be competitive, but the simple fact is that outside of Camden and Bradwell, in general the rest of the region is pretty bad. Not enough players, not enough community support, not enough funding. Savannah schools like to come to Camden to get a piece of the gate.

To The Lowndes Doubters

I realize that I may be addressing a minority of the bloggers (at least I hope so) but Lowndes is the team to beat in 5A. Too many horses, too much speed, and sound fundamentals all the way around (O, D and Special teams).

To the Camden Doubters

See the comments regarding Lowndes. These two teams are eerily similar.

Realist ep fan,

Your spot on concerning the “one man team bit” Good post.

Your also correct about our coaches doing a great job of keeping the boys focused and prepared for the games each week. Again good point. However history shows that to date, our OC has choked in the big games. If you don’t give the ball to your playmakers then you can’t expect to win the big ones. IMO the two losses this season have one common denominator: Our two best RB’s (32 and 20) had less than 6 carries each game. We paniced and tried to throw throw and throw instead of running the ball and the clock. As a result, our very good defense stayed on the field way too long, became wore down and thus we lost. Period. Same thing against Marist in 06 and TCC in 07. I was there and saw it with my own eyes. We had better hope we run the ball tonight and not fall into that same trap. If we do then it truly is one and done. The boys are ready, they just need to be given the opportunity.

If Coffee can’t ground Stephenson then 1AAAAA needs to shut-up. Stephenson has nothing but defense so we’ll find out how tough those south Georgia boys are. By the way, the last time a team man-handled Stephenson was when Brookwood stuck 42 on them in the dome. This should be an interesting game; I think I’ll go to this one. Anyone know where the stadium is for Stephenson?

RealisticEP Fan - I understand Milton is selling 5000 tickets for the game. The visitor side at Milton is fairly large, even Roswell our rival only filled up about half. I believe the visitor side tickets are being saved for the EP fans to buy. Hope your side is full.

Realistic EP Fan - from Milton’s website: The public may purchase tickets today at the stadium ticket book from 11am to 1pm. Any remaining tickets will be sold at the gate beginning at 5:30. Once the set number of tickets is gone, the game will be considered sold out. No additional will be available.

You wrote: “The top half of AAAAA is stacked with Grayson, Lowndes, NHS, and Camden Co. Only one of these teams can make it to the Dome.”

Thanks for the post, but I think you’re reading the brackets wrong … it’s the LEFT and RIGHT side halves that matter, not the top and bottom. So of the four teams you listed, Lowndes and Grayson from the left side can meet in the quarterfinals, and Northside and Camden can meet in the second round, and the winners of the left and right halves will meet in the finals in the Dome.

Good to see you are now supporting Northside since your team is out. Wonder if there are any Valdosta fans out there ready to post on this blog showing their support for Lowndes, since the Wildcats are out?

Texas and Georgia and Florida and California, and Ohio and Penn, happen to be the hot beds for college football. Texas guy, shut up about Texas football we are in GA. As far as Buford goes, they would have probably beaten all the teams that were there, regardless of how big or small they are. I would like to see the state champs go at it, and shut everyone up.

Thanks to everyone for the info on the stadium and tickets sales for the EP/Milton game.

for rog I you want to analyze the OC I can do that as well.

1) The OC did ‘not’ panic in the Marist game what so ever. If you recall correctly or watched the game,(I just watched the tape) you’ll realize that our best back at the time(24) was not even in uniform. We stayed with the running game quite a bit, and Chaz was definitely a either a bit off or a tad nervous. Also when the ball was on the mark if you recall to (18), he happened to drop the ball that would have gone for a TD. All in all the running game is what kept if from being a bigger score.

2) TCC/OC definitely didn’t panic. We stayed with the run through out the first half until the last 4 min of the second quarter then it was an illadvised throw by the QB that resulted in a touchdown for TCC. The best thing TCC did was scout us and realize that putting a hat on #1 was the key to popping a big run.

3) Woodstock/ OC again did not panic at all. The only call I’d question even slightly was the 4th and inches call and if that had popped for a TD(like it has in the past several times) it would have been brillant. Personally I’d have gone out side with the QB. Bottom line is their coaching staff showed confidence in their team by going for it on their own 16….we had a hand on him as he hit the tackle hole but couldn’t hold him and he popped it outside and was gone.

4)Harrison- This game if any, I could agree that the OC or game plan kinda got tossed out the window. There was a shift to (#2) at QB in the second quarter and his abilty to only run a hand ful of plays kept us limited. It also kept us from executing our normal offensive running game and yes both 32 and 20, I believe should/could have been utilized more. My most questionable call was 4th and goal from their 20 at the end of the 3rd qtr I believe it was. Why we didn’t kick a FG I’ll never know. The score was 21-3 at the time and we needed three scores, the order didn’t matter.

I also have been at every one of the games. I want to clarify, that while I may have a different thought about what to do in a certain situation then the coaching staff, that does not mean that I’m second guessing them in anyway. They coach I cheer.

We are both passionate about the same team. One thing that is undeniable about them is their heart. And being slightly dismissed by the media and others is a bit more the role they are accustomed to and might just bring out the best in them tonight.

HPhi:

Please re-read what Demon Fan wrote, which I quote for you (again): “The top half of AAAAA is stacked with Grayson, Lowndes, NHS, and Camden Co. Only one of these teams can make it to the Dome.”

This is wrong, and you said it was correct, so you are wrong. Of the four teams Demon fan mentions, it could be Lowndes vs. Camden, or Lowndes vs. Northside in the final (Dome) game. Or, it could be Grayson vs. Camden, or Grayson vs. Northside in the final (Dome) game. So see, it COULD be two of these teams in the final, not just one of them, as Demon Fan posted.

Demon Fan was reading the brackets wrong, because he was reading them as if the team that emerges from the TOP HALF would meet the team that emerges from the BOTTOM HALF. This is not correct.

What IS correct, as I already stated and you claimed was wrong, is the team that emerges from the LEFT HALF will meet the team that emerges from the RIGHT HALF. So, in THIS bracket, it’s the LEFT-RIGHT matchup that determines who plays in the final (Dome) game, not the TOP HALF-BOTTOM HALF.

This ain’t rocket science. Just read the brackets correctly. I accept your apology.

To all of the people that think Camden can’t play, don’t underestimate them because of their schedule. NS better bring more than they did with Lowndes and Carver. Camden defense does not allow you to get to the edge, they block kicks (I think 8 or 9 this year with 6 or 7 for td’s, and they give the O a real shoirt field to play on.

ANOTHER FINE post REAL’-epfan

I feel the need to ad this small caveat: During a game if a player or players dis-respect a coach. Most coaches will yank their cocky little butts out of the game. Maybe limit the amount of pt or touches they get. No one is bigger then the game or the team for that matter.

We are blessed throughout this state with driven, hard working, hard-noised coaches who expect 100% out of their players all the darn time PERIOD. I for one can’t thank all my coaches and Band directors who put me in my place when I needed it.

Coffee’s 17 - 14 OT victory smashed your theory that Atlanta is the only place for quality football.
