Tulane Men’s Basketball Signs Jordan Callahan, Aaron Holmes to National Letters-of-Intent Green Wave inks one of the top Point Guards in Georgia; a former consensus top-50 national player New Orleans – Tulane University head men’s basketball coach Dave Dickerson announced today the signing of two standout basketball players- Jordan Callahan and Aaron Holmes- to national letters-of-intent on the first day of national signing day.
“Our staff has done a great job of identifying our needs and most importantly signing two significant players who will help us immediately and really give our program a very bright future,” Dickerson said. “Jordan and Aaron really solidify our guard positions for the next two to three years, and we can now focus on replacing the talent we are losing in our frontcourt.”
Callahan is a 5-11, 170-pound point guard who graduated from Blessed Trinity in Roswell, Ga., in 2008 and is currently enrolled at The New Hampton School, a prep school in New Hampton, New Hampshire.
As a high school star at Blessed Trinity under head coach Brian Marks, he led the team to a 48-10 overall record during his final two years and earned honorable mention all-state and team MVP honors both seasons. During his senior campaign, Callahan averaged 14.3 points and 4.8 assists per game and set the school’s single-season scoring mark with 443 points. He guided his team to a regional runner-up finish and to the state tournament “Sweet 16.” Callahan was named to the Georgia Athletic Coaches Association State Senior All-Star Team, the Roswell Beacon first team, the All-Fulton County second team, and was selected as the Roswell Neighbor North Fulton County MVP.
“Jordan reminds me a lot of a bigger version of our own Kevin Sims. He knows how to run a team very well, he can score, he is an above-average shooter from the perimeter and has very decisive decision making. He will be a great asset to our program,” Dickerson said.
Callahan averaged 13.5 points and 4.2 assists and set his prep career single game scoring mark with 27 points vs. South Gwinnett as a junior. He played AAU basketball for the nationally-known Georgia Starts under Norman Parker.
ESPN.com graded Callahan with a 91, which according to their system classifies him as an Immediate Impact Prospect Player level (Demonstrates rare abilities and has the potential to start as a freshman for a national, top-25 program).
“I am very happy to be a part of the Tulane family and am looking forward to starting my collegiate career at Tulane next year,” Callahan said. “Tulane has high quality academics and I really liked the city of New Orleans and its location since it’s only six hours from home, and it plays in a good conference. I want to do whatever I can to help the team. As a point guard, I have to be a vocal leader, a good shooter and a coach on the floor, and I look forward to that opportunity.”
“Jordan is a consummate team player,” Blessed Trinity head coach Brian Marks said. “He was a floor leader for us over the past two seasons. He was a major reason why we went 48-10 over the past two years. He is an excellent ball handler, has great court vision, can score from anywhere on the floor by shooting three-pointers, pulling up for mid-range jumpers or penetrating all the way to the basket. He is a proven winner and has an outstanding work ethic and a very positive attitude. Furthermore, he is one of the most respectful young men I have ever coached.”
A 6-5, 195-pound shooting guard from St. Petersburg, Fla., and 2006 graduate of St. Petersburg Catholic, Holmes originally signed with Florida State out of high school, but transferred to South Florida following his first semester. After sitting out one full year due to NCAA Transfer rules, he played in 18 conference games with the Bulls, but left USF after the 2007-08 campaign due to a coaching change. Holmes is currently enrolled at Santa Fe Community College in Gainesville, Fla., and will have two years of eligibility remaining.
Rated as a top 50 national prospect as a senior, Holmes scored 2,748 career points, the most in school history, and led St. Petersburg Catholic to four straight district titles and three trips to the state Final Four. He is the only player to be named All-Suncoast Player of the Year three times by the St. Petersburg Times (2004-06), and was also runner-up for Florida’s Mr. Basketball in 2006. He also led his AAU team to the Showtime National title.
“Throughout his career, Aaron has been a proven player both in high school and in college. He brings instant credibility as a player that can come in from day one and become a force to be reckoned with for our opponents. He is a student of the game and a relentless worker. We expect Aaron to have a great career at Tulane,” Dickerson said.
Holmes was named to the Florida Sports Writers Association Class 3A boys All-State basketball first team as a senior in 2005-06, and also as a junior in 2004-05. In his sophomore season he was named to the Class 3A Boys all-state basketball second team when he averaged 22 points a game in 2003-04.
Holmes helped lead SPC to 100 victories during his four-year career, and scored in double figures in each game during his senior season. He averaged 27.4 point per game and led his team to a 27-4 record during his final prep campaign.
Holmes averaged 26.1 points and 6.9 rebounds per outing and reached the 40-point plateau twice as a junior, including his career-high of 46 points against Florida Prep. He averaged 12.8 points per contest and earned all-state honorable mention honors as a freshman.
“Aaron is a very talented and outstanding basketball player,” said Chris Mowry, head basketball coach at Santa Fe Community College. “He is a gym rat and a very hard worker both in practice and outside of practice. He is a very coachable player who takes a great approach to both class and basketball, and has a desire to be the best basketball player he can possibly be. Aaron has a great personality and is a very likeable person, and we are very happy to have him as a part of our program for this year. I believe he will be a great addition to the Tulane basketball family next year and he is the type of person that the Tulane University faculty and staff will enjoy getting to know and work with and will someday be proud to call a Tulane alumnus.”

You should be considering Hutson Mason QB for Lasssiter HS as the player of the year! Since when does a junior throw for 3400 yards in a season and 26 TD’s on a 70% completion rate and he still not done. Wake up sports media the best QB in a long time is sitting right in front of you and no one wants to write or talk about him. Get with the program. All we can read about is running backs from Etowah, Walton, Milton or Harrison. Doc

“Since when does a junior throw for 3400 yards in a season and 26 TDs”? Last year, when Drew Little of Henry Co. threw for 3172 yards and 41 TDs. Little is about 350 yards away from the all-time state high school career passing yardage record of 9062.
Congratulations to all of the signees listed!

Just got word that Ryan Storms (starting center for East Coweta High School football) has commited to Furman Univ. Originally commited to Navy, he was not totally certain about the military commitment that would follow though he would proudly serve his country if he had to. Ryan is my nephew and all of us back in Texas are so proud of him and wished we could have watched him play here. However, we hear that Coweta County, Ga. has some of the best high school football teams in Ga.!!Ryan, we really thought you might go after a rodeo scholarship, can you still rope calves and steers at Furman or would the football coaches frown on that? Take care and God bless you as you prepare to head to S. Carolina and become a Paladin - should have known it would be a mascot that rides a horse!! See you in Texas for Christmas! Love, Uncle Cliff

I came across this unique website where athletes can showcase their talent to the world. It’s a public site where you don’t need a login and password to view athletes. The profile page hosts a video player, bio section, action photos, and links to specific article. It’s a clean set up and if your a athlete or parents trying to generate more exposure, check it out. http//:www.officialplayerwatch.com. They also have a service for creating a highlight video….
