Weekend Predictions: Harrison will take region crown; Brookwood over Parkview
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
There comes a time in every man’s life when he has to look in the mirror and accept that he reached high and grabbed, well, mediocrity.
Last week was that week for me. For the season, I have a prognostication record of 69-33, which is pretty stout. But last week I was a ho-hum 5-5. Sort of like Georgia’s performance in Jacksonville, my picks just weren’t up to par.
Instead of rounding into playoff shape, I took a step back, but now is when it really matters and there are plenty of big games out there to refocus my energies.
The Amazing 5-AAAAA Race: If there has been one school that has been the bane of my existence this year, it has been Harrison. Whenever the Hoyas have appeared in this column, it is good bet that they will do exactly the opposite of what I say. For that reason, East Paulding fans will be very sad to hear that I am picking Etowah to win the season finale against the Hoyas. East Paulding will take care of its business against Woodstock, but since I have picked Etowah to win, it looks like Harrison emerges as the region champs. A Raiders victory against Woodstock also puts Kennesaw Mountain in the playoffs after the Mustangs beat Marietta.
Gwinnett gratification: Lots of good action this week in the best county in the state that starts with a G (take that, Greene, Gilmer, Glynn and Glascock), but how telling is it that the landscape of Gwinnett football has changed so much that the Brookwood-Parkview game isn’t the biggest of the week? (Take Brookwood on the road, by the way.) No, the biggest game will be at Peachtree Ridge, where the Lions try to hand North Gwinnett its only in-state loss of the season. I picked against The Ridge last week, and since they don’t have Gwinnett in their school name, I will pick against them again this week. Collins Hill is the only 8-1 team in Class AAAAA that isn’t ranked in our Top 10. Norcross will show you why tonight with a big victory over the Eagles. Dear Grayson, you are so dreamy! O.K., that might have been a little too much, but the lovefest with the Rams continues.
Region title games, historical and religious references: Rome and Sprayberry will play for the top seed in Region 7-AAAA, but there are plenty who would argue that the top two teams in the region aren’t playing for the region title. I would argue that Sprayberry isn’t even the fourth-best team in the region, but this is the world of subregions that we live in. Rome rolls. Dunwoody looked poised and focused when I saw it play earlier this year, but take the Fighting Popes of St. Pius for the 5-AAA title. Speaking of Popes, Walton beats Pope for the Region 6-AAAAA top spot. I’ve got no ties to 18th century preacher George Whitefield, but I’ll take the school that is named for him against Eagle’s Landing Christian for the top spot in 5-A.
Around the state: Dublin over Jefferson County for the 3-AA title. Lassiter topples Roswell. Pepperell holds off Calhoun, which is coming in as the hottest team in AA. Thomas County Central over Bainbridge in the Ed Pilcher Bowl. Charlton County to reign supreme in the Swamp over McIntosh County Academy.

Not even a mention of Newnan High School. They are ranked in the Top 50 in the country. They are dominatiing everyone they play. Yet not even a blip about them.

Woodstock winning won’t be much of an upset. They played Etowah tough and just about beat Harrison. And we’re totally one-dimnensional with our starting QB out, and we’ve been lulled into overconfidence with that game at Cherokee last week. East will finish third then go get slaughtered at Kell next week.

Perseverance will prevail Mr. Whitfield and you finally get it right, Harrison falls to Etowah, East Paulding handles Woodstock and earns the Region 5-AAAAA Championship in their first-ever-season in AAAAA. Nice work Mr. Whitfield, nice work….

hey todd how do u figure that if etowah wins and east wins that harrison will win the region? if etowah wins thats puts them at 9-1 (6-1) and harrison goes to (8-2) (5-2) and if east wins they will go to 9-1 (6-1) also and east holds the tie breaker with beating etowah earlier in the year. the only way that harrison can win the region is if they beat etowah and thats just not going to happen

Etowah will definitely win, definitely. Cause if the Hoyas win, Lassiter will go to Harrison next week and they’ll cancel the game because everyone will just want to watch the bands!!!!

The Brookwood-Parkview game is still big. Whoever wins get the #2 seed and the first round homefield advantage. IMO the Battle of Five Forks Trickum is still the biggest game in Gwinnett football.

Hey, my name is Chris, not Todd. You might want to go back and re-read the column. Harrison has proved every prediction I have made wrong. Since I picked Etowah to win, that means that Harrison will win and then claim the region title. If Etowah wins, then your scenario is totally correct.

Chris This is the week you’ve out-smarted yourself. You have predicted Harrison will win and lose and Etowah will win and lose. I, on the other hand, am predicting East a winner over Woodstock and Etowah a winner over Harrison which makes East a double winner this week.

Doesn’t matter who wins the greater Atlanta playoffs. either Lowdnes County or Camden County will become the 2008 AAAAA champion. HS Football as played in N. GA cannot compare with south Georgia teams, head-to-head or any other way you want to put it. JC in Duluth

It seems as though some are confused. Chris picked Etowah because everytime he picks the opposite team Harrison wins. It’s a joke! This has happened several times this year. The bottom line is, he’s actually predicting Harrison to win the region as he states in his headline. Go HOYAS’S!

All this “rumbling” and it’s barely 3:00 but no worries that is only the cannon over at “THE BONEYARD” getting warmed up!!! Bring on Woodstock…the RAIDER NATION is ready!!!
Etowah we are counting on you to FLY HIGH tonight…you got a VERY worried, concerned, and NERVOUS Harrison team about to board those buses and head your way. They see the writing on the wall and know in their hearts that it’s a NEW DAY in REGION 5A AAAAA!!!
After tonight it’s EAST #1, ETOWAH #2, Harrison #3, and #4 ????? Well we are gonna leave this blank for a reason…LOL!

While hornet and Big Pappi are sending scores back and forth I’ll be slipping on my cheerleader outfit and heading to Etowah at halftime! This is the week you’ve out-smarted yourself. You have predicted Harrison will win and lose and Etowah will win and lose.
MY prediction is that Harrison will lose, but since I have been wrong on every single Harrison pick this season, that is bad news for East Paulding. I don’t write the headline, but I do think that it is funny that Harrison has been the team that have an absolute 0-for record on this season.
Whitefield, Todd, Homet,ENR,Whitfield, what is the differance, we know yall are all the same. With this article, you should be a politician. somehow, you picked us all to win. Good job.
HoyaDawg, if you ever compare me to ENR again, I will hunt you down in west Cobb and make you watch Tim Tebow highlight films for 10 straight hours! LOL
Thanks for picking my BRONCOS sweetpea!! Love ya!! GO BRONCOS!!! WHOOO HOOOO

Not even a mention of Newnan High School. They are ranked in the Top 50 in the country. They are dominatiing everyone they play. Yet not even a blip about them.
Newnan is one of the top-ranked teams in our poll and winning by ridiculous margins. Do you really think that the game with East Coweta is going to be a big test? Neither did I, so why pick it? I think us having Newnan ranked so high while they play in arguably the second-weakest region in the state is a testament to our high regard of the team.
Hey, everyone be safe tonight as this rain rolls into the metro area and hope everyone stays as healthy as possible as we head into the playoffs.

Whitfield, How can you pick against the Ridge? Honestly, have you seen them play?
I’ve seen video on both teams this season, and honestly, this is a game that can truly go either way, and that isn’t just Obama or McCain doublespeak. Someone else said everyone underestimates PTRidge, and I don’t necessarily buy that as much as this pick of N. Gwinnett is more respect for Tamburo and crew.

The Parkview versus Brookwood game is only a big game to them. The sun does not rise and set based on what they do. Many other schools in the state play much better football. LOL!

North will win this game because they are better coached. The Ridge has an outstanding defense led by Kevin Minter who is the real deal. But North wins with less talent year in and year out and outstanding coaching and game planning. I predict a turnover by the Ridge to spark North to its first region title.

The Voice of Reason Totally agree with you, North is better coached and they will win… let me add something to what you’re saying. North Gwinnett has scored an average of 34 in the season to Ridge’s 20. The past four games: NG has scored 40 or higher in each, only allowing very few points. When you think about it, NG has allowed a lot less points on Duluth (0 to be exact) while Ridge allowed a lot more, they also almost lost to Mill Creek. So should be a good game, I agree with predictions that NG will win, game won’t be too close at all. I mean, the closest game was with Brookwood and Norcross this year… both 14 point margins. B-wood is really good, NG has lots of respect for that team because they will always be good. Norcross is still pretty good though.

Can anyone tell me when is Camden going to play a real team with a winning record…. They have one championship. They have the weakest region in the state of GA. Most 4A or 3A school can could compete in Camden region… Camden can not be considered a contender until they play in a region like Lowndes.. Thats why they will never win another championship…
