AJC Football Rankings: Three No. 1 teams play ranked opponents this week
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
There are seven games this week between ranked teams. That’s the most this season. Previous high was five in early September. Would love to hear some fans break down those games.
Here’s what I see:
Winning comfortably (14+ points): Lowndes over Coffee, Buford over Westminster, Baldwin over Washington County.
Tight (3-10 points): Westside over Thomas County Central, Tucker over Southwest DeKalb, Wilcox over Turner.
Toss-up (1-3 points): Carver over LaGrange. Carver has played a tougher schedule and is perhaps more battle-tested.
Rankings shakeups:
AAAAA - Harrison, Union Grove out. Stephenson, Norcross in. Walton hangs on for losing close. But I’m starting to think Region 6 ain’t all that. Region 5 is stronger if you look at non-region results, the few of them that exist. And I like Gwinnett, so that’s why Norcross got the nod over one-loss teams such as Etowah, Kell, East Paulding, etc.
AAAA - Rankings stayed the same despite SWD losing to Marist. I gave Villa Rica a long look.
AAA - I gave in and ranked Jackson, dropping Carrollton, which just isn’t playing like a Top 10 team.
AA - Try ranking this class. You’ve got Buford & Pepperell, solid 1-2. Then No. 3 through No. 12 (with Dublin and Blessed Trinity being the teams that I couldn’t shoe-horn in there) is anybody’s guess, except when head-to-head determines the order. With Buford showing itself vulnerable last week, Class AA might wind up having the most interesting postseason of them all. And don’t count out 4-4 Thomasville.
A - Wesleyan replaces Athens Academy.
Todd talks back: Holcomb mixes it up with you all week long. Catch his running commentary in Poll Talk Monday-Friday. Leave comments, questions, etc., here and return to talk about this week’s rankings.
