AJC Football Predictions: East Paulding-Harrison a region title
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
We have had Lowndes-Valdosta, Grayson-Brookwood, Marist-Tucker and Northside-Lowndes as star attractions in this column, but the game that people in northwest Metro have been clamoring for all season is finally upon us.
Yes, it is time for that big McEachern-North Cobb contest we have all been waiting for. What? That wasn’t the game you were waiting for me to pick this week?
Oh, yeah, now I remember! There is a little contest about to be played off of Due West Road that we might want to talk about. The blogs have been full of it and the cannon has been loaded and the Hoyas have been unleashed, so let’s get to East Paulding at Harrison.
This game has been the source of intense speculation all year. After barely avoiding the Upset Special of the Week by the hair of Robbie Godhigh’s little pinky that deflected a would-be game-winning field goal, No. 8 Harrison should be firmly focused on the Raiders. No. 10 East Paulding took care of business at North Cobb last week, and now the anticipated showdown between ranked and undefeated teams to decide the Region 5-AAAAA title is upon us.
Having seen both teams play, it is hard to see a whole lot of difference between the two. Both teams have solid lines of scrimmage, and both teams have shown they know how to win even when it seems like they shouldn’t. Both teams have opportunistic defenses that force turnovers and skill people that can make the difference.
Harrison gets an edge at home, but is it a big enough edge? The Hoyas also own two victories against the Raiders, but that was a decade ago. So who has the edge? People are going to accuse me of jumping on the East bandwagon and having something against the Hoyas, but neither is the case. I just think that right now, the Raiders have a lot to prove and some respect to earn. This victory will bring the respect they have been craving.
Don’t worry Hoya fans, I have been wrong about you before, but for the record I was 10-3 last week and am 51-19 on the year,
Gwinnett groove on: With Region 1-AAAAA practically shut down this week, it has been kind of quiet in south Georgia, but that just means I get to show Gwinnett some more love. My big crush on Grayson continues this week as Berkmar joins the ranks of the fallen. Talk about a team needing some love, how about Collins Hill? Even though they are undefeated and at home, I am picking Peachtree Ridge to end the Cinderella run of the Eagles.
Here, there and everywhere: Let’s cruise around the state in a haphazard manner. Johnson County is good, but ECI is on another plane. Washaun Ealey breaks another record against the team that Herschel used to run for. Stephenson and M.L. King are both 5-1, so this one should be must-see viewing at Hallford Stadium. Since the King family is out of sorts this week, gimme Stephenson. Who saw Hillgrove at Sprayberry as a big game? I like a feel-good story, so take the third-year school in Hillgrove. Chamblee to bounce back over Tucker. Lassiter over Milton. Kennesaw Mountain handles Woodstock. Dunwoody to keep rolling past Columbia.

CRIS, ROME BARLEY ESCAPED TUNNEL HILL LAST YEAR WITH A 22-20 WIN. THEY WILL GET A BIG DOSE OF DEAN HAYNES (AS WILL DALTON LATER) THIS YEAR, UNLIKE LAST YEAR. HE WILL BE THE DIFF…. BRUINS 27- ROME 21. AND I DO THINK E.PAULDING IS FOR REAL AGAIN. EP 24- HARRISON 21

Once again “No Respect” thanks for counting us out. It remains to be seen. What do we have to do to gain respect from all these losers on the blog? Chris you make sure you look me up after game when its over to APOLOGIZES for your comments and to congratulates us on the VICTORY

FOR CHRIS:
That was as close to a non-pick as you could get…LOL! I actually had to look at the winner/loser column to see where you ACTUALLY said EAST over Harrison…LOL!
Don’t worry…You are safe in this one, although some are being a bit more optimistic than I am I still think it’s EAST 24 - Harrison 21 (Maybe 17)
This one should live up to all the advance billing, I know EAST is bringing a HUGE crowd over and I understand the Hoya side will be rockin’ so this one should be fun!

Heading for the wilds of Camden county next week, so here’s two predictions for the price of one. Oct 24 - Raiders have a joyous Homecoming after two weeks at sea. Gentle Mustangs meander on to the grass at the Boneyard but are soon stampeded by repetitive cannon fire. Seveal are trampeled trying to get back on their buses. East 35 - Mountain 3 Oct 17 - The forty-gun frigate S.S. Raider sails into Harrison Harbour at Cobleigh only to find the Stone Wall defended by a 120-gun Man-of-War and a feisty little dog. Raiders are outgunned and discouraged but then realize this isn’t a sea battle, it will be fought, and won, by ground and air! East 21 - Hoyas 17

Chris, you are absolutely right, you have allowed the ep faithful to pull you right onto their bandwagon!!! I have no dog in this fight…just an outsider looking in, but when I read your words it sure sounds like you are an ep fan. Whats up with that…I thought you were to give an unbiased, objective presentation? You have clearly allowed all of the whinning and complaining from the ep fans about lack of respect to finally influence you and impact your weekly articles in the AJC. They cry and you go running to their games. They lament about no paper play from the AJC and the next thing you know, all you see is ep stuff every where….Its making me sick to my stomach!!! And let me tell you that is quite bothersome for me!!! However, I do agree with your pick…ep wins, but barely!!!

Chris, I just want to say you’re much smarter than you look and way wiser than Maxie, who was a great picker but just couldn’t get used to there being new guys on the block. He picked Sequoyah (East 46-13) in 2006 and Douglas County (East 30-21) and Mays (East 21-3) in 2007.

Don’t blame Chris for picking EP. In a coin flip situation where there is no clear favorite, he just got a little selfish and decided he’d rather have a few passionate and rational Harrison fans mad at him than have dozens of fringe EP fans, (excludes RealEPFan and Homet of course), chase him down Due West with a Hob-nail boot. Which we can all agree would be the most likely scenerio otherwise.
That said, great pick Chris! GO RAIDERS!!

The underdog HoyaDawgs, kinda got a nice little ring to it. I like it like that. You see Chris just gave us some locker room wallpaper. He gave EP nothing. If you hav’nt noticed most of the east bloggers want to act like the world is against them .Most of coach read’s quotes in print, have to do with everybody said we could’nt do it, we could’nt win in 4A, but we did. They say wait until you get in 5A, you wan’t win. Well guess what EP, You got your respect! You proved the world wrong, You are the favored team over who used to be the mighty Hoyas of region 5AAAAA. The Hoyas are now the underdogs, no preasureon us, we just need to see if we can go out and hang with the mighty, favored east Raiders. Thank You Chris and AJC. NOW LOOKOUT, CAUSE SOMEBODY DONE UNLEASHED THOSE UNDERDOG HOYADAWGS!!!!!!!!!

Chris Whitfield Man you got guts to pick this game. It will be close, I am a trueblue East fan and I can’t honestly say I know we will win. I believe with all my heart that we are capable of winning. I support what I know will be a superhuman effort, win or lose. Thanks for your support.
East fans you better get there early. Ticket sales will be limited. They will close the gates and you know we will bring a lot of people! Just like other big games, many will come from other schools just to watch a great game.

Give Chris a little Bar-b-q and he can be bought. That’s okay. The Hoyas like being the underdog. Just like they were at Lowndes last year. We on Due west road remember how that one turned out and this year’s team is even more together. Maybe not as fast or skilled but more together.

Chris you make sure you look me up after game when its over to APOLOGIZES for your comments and to congratulates us on the VICTORY
You know exactly where I will be after the game, getting quotes from the coaches and players. Although, I don’t really think I have anything to apologize for. What comments did I make about Harrison that were offensive? Call the game about as even as any I can remember calling one game this season, and apparently that is offensive. I HAD to pick a winner.
They cry and you go running to their games. They lament about no paper play from the AJC and the next thing you know, all you see is ep stuff every where….Its making me sick to my stomach!!! And let me tell you that is quite bothersome for me!!! However, I do agree with your pick…ep wins, but barely!!!
JAYBO Man, hammer me for my pick and then agree with it? Man, it has been a long time since I have been to the Rose City (1994 state championship game to be exact), but what are they putting in the water down there? And as far as coverage is concerned, Todd has gone to one game and I have gone to another, and the only reason it is two is because they are in a COBB region and that is one of our biggest coverage areas.
That was as close to a non-pick as you could get…LOL!
You aren’t far from the truth. I just really had a hard time finding an edge for either team, and both coaches said the same thing when I talked to them. I just feel like East Paulding has something to prove because at No. 10 I don’t think the Raiders feel like they are getting the respect they deserve. (not that I agree with that, just the way EP players feel)
Give Chris a little Bar-b-q and he can be bought.
For the record, the only BBQ I had at East Paulding, I bought from the band booster club. Heck of a brisket!
Thank You Chris and AJC. NOW LOOKOUT, CAUSE SOMEBODY DONE UNLEASHED THOSE UNDERDOG HOYADAWGS!!!!!!!!!
Glad I could be of service.

*Whats up with that…I thought you were to give an unbiased, objective presentation? *
Um, that would be called reporting. That is what I do when I go to a game and “report” what happens in an unbiased manner. Column writing is an entirely different beast. If I were an unbiased and objective columnist, then I would have to pick every game as a tie, and that would be very, very boring and i doubt that I would get many readers or blog hits.

The playoffs haven’t even started yet and you’re on here acting as if ep has accomplished soo much! I give up on you man…I thought you were getting it, but I see you still just don’t get it…the difference between regular season football and playoff football!!!!
EAST has ACCOMPLISHED much this season my posting “BUD”…All the naysayers have been quieted that were saying EAST could not play at this level. Now they have “SHIFTED” gears and are saying…OH, WELL EAST is ONLY winning because they are in a “WEAK” division. They play where they are assigned to play!!! What is EAST suppossed to do???…request to travel to South Ga. every friday to play the ONLY teams in Ga. that you seem to think matter???
So far 6-0 in REGULAR season play (you know everyone has to play the regular season games TO GET TO THE PLAYOFFS) you seem to only care about one or two games AT THE END OF THE SEASON!!!
Friday nights are fun…enjoy the OTHER 10 games and then let’s TALK PLAYOFFS…Hey EAST will still be there in 4 weeks for that discussion ALSO!!!
BUT JAYBO…tonight it’s on…by our little part of the country this game is HUGE…we will have a CROWD crammed into “THE COB” for this game, the winner SHOULD have the best shot at the division title for 5A AAAAA…
as for your “TCC would dominate 5A comment”,…NOT THIS YEAR they wouldn’t!! Remember EAST has ALREADY beat ROME (AAAA) and Rome is ranked…Rome would beat TCC this year (EASILY)…TCC would not beat EAST, HARRISON, or ETOWAH (remember I used your comment, THIS YEAR) so by our schedule if TCC played it this year they would go 6-4 (maybe 7-3) THAT IS NOT DOMINATING…
Hey you said it weeks ago, you & I were going to have some “heated” post before the year was over…LOL!

Some cats are hitting me with crazy comments and ignorance, and I’m not gonna dignify them with a response. Anyway, man I’m gonna keep in mind what you said Rome would do to TCC…who knows, we might face them in the playoffs. I know we will never know, but again, TCC would beat every team in your region this year! I wouldn’t have made this comment earlier this season because there was too much youth and uncertainty surrounding our team. But we have improved tremendously and could possibly win a few playoff games. Hey, enjoy your game tonight…wish I could see it but I dont think directv has that station.

Homet,
Why you keep avoiding my question about the origin of your statge name “homet?” Are you connected to the FBI, CIA or something….LOL?

Quit trolling as Coach Reid, man up and use a real name, like hornet!. Hard to see East as the favorite. I give Hoyas tradition, running back, QB, special teams, and home field. East has the coaching, Cowbellman, and the intangibles. All I know is it’s time to lock up the women and children and put those dogs on a leash cause …Here comes the Boom!

Jake, everybody knows who my team is! So for starts, you need to identify your team. I assume you’re an ep fan. TCC is not a dominate team this year…lost too many horses from last year. But I am keenly aware of the great gap between south and north ga football. Don’t get me wrong, north ga will win a few games statewide sometimes, buut history shows that south ga rules in football!! Yea, I guess you’re right…a 5-1 record is a little down.

Jaybo - Yes, ep fan, I enjoyed that strange combination of wonderful hospitality and a brutal whipping at TCC last year. Just seems like last year you beat the syrup slurpers and this year you have Westside to worry about. I guess all three of those teams would dispose of anything in little ole 5-AAAAA. So it’s basically anything 3A and above south of the gnat line will beat any team any classification north of the line 2 times out of 3?

HoyaGirl - No offense meant. This time of year I think there are four genders, men, women, children, and football fans! Since you’re obviously the later, you should consider relocating to Paulding, better footbal, better monster trucks!!!!!

No jake, its not that easy and simple!!! But you’re right, it looks like we are headed for a collision with Westside Macon. From what I’ve heard they’re loaded and I’m not sure we can hang with them. I hope we can give them a game! I know you’re going to your big game tonight…have fun…I know it will be wild and loud!!

Were losing a ton of seniors this year It might be more reality them rumor, East has a 4.5 enrollment. It is fun trashing each other in a good way. Some folks on here and other places go way overboard. HOMET is a great fan!
A TCC RAIDERS rematch would be huge

Good health and good luck to all the Hoyas and Raiders! I’m heading out to the pen, got to give that shoat time to bleed out before he becomes tonight’s BBG. My daughter begged me not to slaughter Little Hoya, but I told her, “it’s just his time tonight honey”.

East Senior 09 You can get in but you will probably have to stand. Course you students stand all game to support the team anyway. I’m proud of the way the ya’ll back the team! I hope ya’ll come by the thousands! Hoyas be advised East fans will be there by the thousands no matter what the weather!

DUDE!!! You are retarded! Winners/Losers? Have you ever even seen half of these teams play? Coosa Eagles are gonna put a CAW on those Armuchee Indians tonight. They can’t handle #44!!!! LeBron Neal baby, he’s a beast and the kid can run. Pepperell will whip us, but they’ll probably be in the Dome this year. Peace out

Retarded? I guess Calhoun couldn’t stop Neal when they won 51-12. Probably an even game that could be a pick-em, but I don’t think picking Armuchee to win is that far fetched.

Weather radar shows everything clearing up around 5:00 or so…HEADEAST There should be NO MUD as Harrison plays on artificial turf (or so I am told)…

EAST WILL NOT be going back down to AAAA play as you stated because the level is NOT determined by how many SENIORS a school has but total enrollment. EAST is WAY over the number needed to remain in AAAAA and with the continued growth Paulding County is experiencing that is not going to stop for the forseeable future.
NOW for the GAME…the stadium opens at 5:00 so get there early and let’s support our RAIDERS!!! Several of the area church’s are allowing parking in their lots and the school is running shuttle busses over to the school.
The COUNTDOWN CLOCK is going NUTS…just over 4 hours AND COUNTING!!!

Just a guess - HOMET must stand for Home Team, or perhaps Homer? Nothing wrong with that. Still rooting for Harrison. Final score 21 - 17.

Chris.. Armuchee ain’t Calhoun. I promise ya. But give them a few years, as soon as the kids in middle school get up to Coosa we’ll be lucky to win a game. That new baseball coach we hired from Calhoun has the middle school football team. He has about 40 kids, plays about 13 of them the whole game. Teaches zero technique, told the defensive linemen that their job wasn’t to make tackles, it was to plug holes so the linebackers can make the play.
But on a good note, I hear he is an excellent baseball coach.. Maybe we start competing in baseball??? I help coach a team of 9 year olds and I think we can keep them together through highschool.. GO EAGLES 2015!!!!

The AJC and the cherokee county paper both have the Etowah game listed as a home game. I will be following the Etowah team to Marietta, as this is a road game? I hope I am right.

Yo, I’ve been reading all this stuff from those EP bloggers and those Hoya people, etc and all those Grayson,Gwinnett, Baldwin, and Washington County people. It just occurred to me that if we could combine with NSWR or Camden, and let every team north of WR get together and pick allstars, we’d beat’em silly.

Dearest Viking Fan, You may be #1 in AAAAA but Buford would beat any 1AAAAA school on any Friday night; twice on Saturdays and never break a sweat. No brag, just fact. Say 1AAAA, when you’re scheduling those small schools early in the season to pad your records why don’t you schedule Buford? Cluck-cluck??
