AJC Football Predictions: Harrison falls into a trap
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
II’m not going to crow over the end of the Northside winning streak (didn’t take a genius to pick that one). And even though I could be excused for climbing to the top of the building and giving a good shoutout to the northwest for Sequoyah making me 2-1 in Upset Specials of the Week, we’ve got a lot to get to this week.
We are at Week 7 of the high school football season, and that means that the true contenders are starting to show themselves, injuries may be starting to stack up, and people are hoping their homecoming opponent proves to be good cannon fodder (not an East Paulding reference more about them next week).
The peerless prep pigskin prognosticator was 8-4 last week, which is about as good as you can expect in these difficult economic times. For the season my record is 41-16, which probably would get me in the Stanley Cup playoffs if I knew how many games hockey teams play in a year. Sorry, I am from Savannah, and the only ice we have is in our sweet tea. On with the picks, and I will try not to throw any voodoo curses on anyone this week.
Unbeatens all around: So who will fall down? That was the question on our website this week, and the obvious favorite in that position has to be No. 4 Grayson. Now, I have had a Gwinnett lovefest with Grayson all season, but is there anyone out there that would put their life on the line saying that Brookwood can’t beat the Rams? Grayson has an 0-4 record against the Broncos. Upset Special of the Week: Fooled ya, Grayson goes to 7-0, and Gwinnett is Great! OK, so the last time I checked our unbeaten-getting-beat poll, No. 8 Coffee was leading that list by a wide margin. One thing about Coffee is that you haven’t heard a whole lot of crowing from their fan base. The 800-pound gorilla in the room is that Coffee has been in this position before and finished with a 6-4 or 7-3 record. Is this the year to re-write some Coffee history? Nope. Harrison has an obvious trap game at Woodstock this week with East Paulding on the horizon. Harrison has a way of losing a game it shouldn’t. Heck, why not? Prove me wrong, Robbie Godhigh!
Upset Special of the Week: Wolverines pull it out.
Class AAAAA unbeaten rundown: Lowndes, East Paulding, Camden County, Newnan and Walton all stay that way.
Elsewhere: In Class A, top-ranked ECI is facing undefeated Treutlen in a Region 3 showdown. Yeah, that wasn’t a typo. TREUTLEN is undefeated this late in a season for the first time in decades. The Vikings won’t be that way for long. Whitewater keeps Starr’s Mill in the Winless Protection Program (we miss you, Darryl Maxie). McNair is 4-2 on the year, but the Mustangs haven’t beaten a team with a winning record. Cedar Grove has been putting up ridiculous numbers. Saints go marching out with the win. Southwest DeKalb has allowed just nine points since losing to M.L. King in the opener. Chamblee scores more than nine points, but the Panthers move to 5-1 and get back into the state talk. Lovett had its biggest win of the season last week, while Blessed Trinity had its first loss. Make it two in a row for the Titans.
Last week: 127-31 (.804)
Overall: 740-227 (.765)

East 28 - N Cobb 14 (team collapsed after Harrison loss) Lowndes 35 - Valdosta 7 (team collapsed after coach left) Coffee 21 - Northside 7 (team exhausted after flapping their lips and then getting their usual 7 when challenged) Hoyas 17 - Woodstock 7 (team on the rise but not up to Harrison level yet)

I would like to make a comment on the recent polls. I have watched Appling and Charlton Countys play this year. Neither one of those teams have showed the character of a top ten team. Region 1’s 4th best team would probably beat region 2’s best team. If they are a top ten team I surely did not see it on the field. Maybe you see something I have not see?

I thin NC will come out 21-17 over EP in a thriller and the Harrison v Woodstock game will be Harrison 28-14 in a close fought game. Lowndes will blow Valdosta out and look forward to a great Northside victory over Coffee of 42-28

Neither “East” or Harrison should be looking toward next week. Both games look like traps, and Woodstock is pretty physical at home. The season is becoming a grind. The stretch for “East” is brutal, starting with last week and Kennesaw Mountain on the backend… kennesaw is very big and tough in the trenches. I don’t believe any one team is unscathed in the end. My prediction this week…Etowah does not lose.

I’m just excited that the region has a solid group of quality teams.
Hopefully East can get through Cobb this week. That Georgia commit makes me uneasy I’m just taking it one game at a time

CANNON FODDER…I knew a trip to EAST would be good for you Chris…LOL! Yeah, sorry we didn’t get together at EAST last week also, I’ll try to track you down at the Harrison game.
I hope you are wrong with the Harrison prediction and right with the EAST prediction as I would LOVE for both teams to be undefeated on Oct. 17th when they meet.
Big Pappi…You are correct this is a BRUTAL stretch of games to be stacked together like they are. EAST is a bit banged up so they REALLY have to stay focused for tomorrow night.
EHSEagle08…NO WAY North Cobb puts 21 points on the board against the EAST “D”…I’ll go out on this limb, JUST FOR YOU…EAST 24 / North Cobb 10 (EAST usually gets just enough “bad” ref calls to give one TD away per game)
CHRIS..Go back and “rethink” your Hiram/South Paulding prediction, here’s your Paulding County “UPSET” special…South Paulding 21 / Hiram 17!!

+Most people do not know the truth — Why Val;dosta is not the Valdosta of years past. The reason is because they are limited as to number of students they can draw from in city of Valdosta.. They cannot expand student wise or quality football player -wise becauuse of these restrictions…if you don’t believe me —check it out………..2nd Thought….Newnam will go underfeated thru regular season….No doubt..If you have seen them play you would understand why i made that statement……3rd……Troup high School of LaGrange, Ga has a very good defensive team; however the offence with a freshman quarterback will stop the from beating Carver. Primarially because Carver’s defense is VERY good……Offence sells tickets…….. Defense wins Championships…….stay tuned……

Homet,
Have been enjoying your insights on East for the past couple months. I am a huge EP fan and alum, but live out in doraville so I don’t get to travel out there much. I did make the trip to TCC last year though, and the dome before that.
I’m cautiously optomistic about our squad this year. And have obviously enjoyed our unexpected success in AAAAA.
EP is old enough now where it’s alumni are everywhere, and it’s wonderful to be able to proudly tell Cobb, Fulton, Forsyth, and Gwinett County folks where you went to HS. A far cry from the school that won 3 games in my tenor there.
GO RAIDERS!

Of course that is IF Grayson looses!

Chris, I think the trip to EP really did you in. Just when I thought you knew something about high school football, you come up with a rediculous prediction like this. I really don’t agree with you calling out a high school football player to prove you wrong. First of all, harrison is a team, not one player. Second, who are you, that we need to prove anything to. Trust me , when these guys fight through blood and sweat, Chris who ever is the furthest thing from their mind. ” UNLEASH THE HOYA DOGS “

There is a little voice inside my head that says Valdosta will upset Lowndes this week. I am definitely not a Valdosta fan but I keep hearing this voice. I guess it could be a let down week after all the big hoopla over last weeks game. It will be interesting to see if the Vikings can keep their focus. Lowndes has a lot to lose (national ranking) and Valdosta could legitimize their season with a victory. It could be an upset special alert!!
Hey I have to get involved because over here on the SE side of the state we just have another boring region 3 game. You understand don’t you?
I am undecided about the Coffee/AAAA game. But I am pulling for Coffee!!

HoyaDawg…I hope Chris is off with this prediction, but I just want EAST & Harrison to get past tonight with a win. Since EAST also has Woodstock still left (the last game of the season at “THE BONEYARD”) I would hate for Woodstock to be the team that trips us both up. You just know that would make their season…LOL!
For the Raiders from EAST it’s on to the village at North Cobb in Kennesaw. These Warriors have been watching and waiting now as the RAIDERS have plundered others around them, five have fallen so far as the RAIDERS trophy’s grew.
They practiced on hornets that were close to home, then Wolves from Rome and Eagles from the South of Cobb were next. Then Indian Scalps were taken and Devils near the Square got left Blue. Vowing to save the day Eagles from Cherokee flew in and “THE BONEYARD” welcomed it’s next foe to plunder. These Eagles had fight (as most Eagles do) but they left telling the tale of the growing legend of “THE BONEYARD RAIDERS”!!!…at the end again the CANNON FIRED and the RAIDERS of EAST looked to Kennesaw and those waiting warriors of North Cobb!!!
With only hours now to go for the visit to the warriors, awaiting in the shadows barely a week away is a beast called a Hoya ready to be unleashed! But that battle is for another field and first comes the pesky warriors in Kennesaw!!!
FROM THE RAIDER NATION…LOAD THE CANNON!!!

Hey guys, sorry I haven’t been on here before now to blog with you guys, but it has been a busy week and I have been working on a story on former University of Georgia running back Tim Worley. Check it out Monday in the metro section.
Harry S Thanks for pointing that out and that was my mistake for not going back and making sure that the Vikings had gotten past last week’s opponent. We got it fixed for the print version this morning.
HoyaDawg I know that Harrison isn’t a one-man show. I have covered the Hoyas already this season, and I came away very impressed. This is one of those games where if the two teams played 10 times, Harrison wins 8 of them. I just think that Harrison could be in for a surprise. I don’t pick these for the heck of it. It would make my game next week between Harrison and East much better from a paper stand point if both were undefeated. However, who saw Harrison’s loss to Campbell coming? As far as Robbie Godhigh is concerned, I have talked to or texted the guy every week this season. We have a rapport, and it was just me tweaking him a little bit. I didn’t mean to insinuate that the Hoyas were a one-man show. That defense is FOR REAL.
Homet I’m not quite ready to drink the BLACK kool-aid just yet, but the Raiders were certainly composed in that final drive to beat Etowah. That says a lot about the fact that this team has been in that situation before and is used to winning when it counts under pressure.
Redlady27 You continue to be a woman of refined tastes and intelligent observations, and it is good to see some estrogen on these blogs with you on here. I will be headed to Raider Valley for the running showdown between two great running back attacks if Will doesn’t assault me at the gate for us not giving his Raiders enough respect this year.
Hey Chris, how ‘bout a piece next on who may rise out of the ranks (or is it just “rank”?) of the o-fers?
I don’t know, I’m not in the habit of beating programs in the dirt when they are down. I’ll think about it. I think there are too many great games between teams that are going to playing deep into the playoffs in the next few weeks to worry about teams that might be undergoing coaching staff changes.

I assure you Todd isn’t in hiding. We are having some issues with our blogs. I credit the problems to the volume of comments that we are getting from our high school fan base. Please be patient while we get these issues ironed out.

I’m a Brookwood fan as well as an overall high school football fan. Think we’ll make the playoffs this year but as much as I hate to say it, there’s a chance tonight we may not make a first down against Grayson. Hope the coaching staff comes out with something Grayson is not expecting and we can continue our domination of them; and I’ll gladly eat my words. Seems though we try to execute the same offense each year with varying player skill sets. This offense must have size and power and this year we don’t have the usual Brookwood size and power but we’re still trying to use that offense scheme. Maybe that’s all the staff knows? Hate to see our boys struggle but they have to attempt to execute what the coaching staff draws up. Maybe time for a regime change or at least they should take a trip over to see how it is done in Alabama, Louisiana or for sure Texas. We have just as good of high school athletes as those states do but to watch a (ie) top-end Texas AAAAA school play and then watch a top-end Georgia high school play….well, there’s a difference. Those top-end Texas teams look more like college offenses and our Georgia teams look like, well a high school team. We can be just as good and need to take a look at what they are doing. Why do you think previous Texas high school quarterbacks are at the helm of six of the top 15 ranked college teams? Back to tonight-Go Broncos.

Brookwood is definitely going to win! The only reason Grayson is 6-0 right now is because they are playing weak teams (Sorry! but it is true) their only real competition is Parkview and Brookwood and you see Parkview only lost by 2 points. I have faith in my boys that they are going to keep the “Region” alive! GO BRONCOS!! Show em that you still got it in you!!
