State Report: Football Hot/Not returns to the great Northwest

Last week, Hot/Not took its traveling caravan to the northwest corner of the state. But it is such beautiful country that we needed two weeks to cover it all. After taking a look at the Class AAAAA and AAAA teams in the area last week, it is now time to check in on the Class AAA, AA and A teams.

Hot

Pepperell: The Dragons haven’t been challenged this season, rolling past Class AAAA and AAA competition early before outscoring Region 7-AA foes Gordon Central and Armuchee 76-22 in the last two weeks. No. 5 Pepperell should roll through the regular season, with Rockmart posing the most serious threat until the region playoff game.

Sonoraville: Who? The Phoenix are in their third season of existence and have a 5-0 record after going 1-9 last year. Coach Chuck King’s team has won close and won big this season, but their opponents haven’t exactly been the cream of the crop. Winless Dade County is up this week, but could Sonoraville actually go into its battle with Calhoun as the favorite?

Lafayette: A 4-2 record might not sound like a very hot team to you, but it is pretty strong when you look at the Ramblers’ history. The school has had just one winning season in the last 15 years and hasn’t made the playoffs since 1993, when a much younger Rayvan Teague was at the helm. Lafayette could very well be the top seed in the crossover games in Region 6-AAA.

Bremen: The Blue Devils are 4-1 this season and have played in at least 12 games every season since 2003.

Not

Southeast Whitfield: The Raiders are giving up an average of 37 points per game.

Temple: After winning 32-9 against Hebron Christian in the season-opener, the Tigers have been outscored 172-21 in their last four games.

You report. We reply. Send us YOUR reports from around the state on the football season. Who’s hot? Who’s not? Bring it.

As said before watch out for Region 3-AA Jefferson County Warriors from Louisville, GA. They are 6-0 and 6-0 in Region 3-AA. This team is on the rise. Last year they made it the 2nd round of the state playoffs. Coach JB Arnold has begun to build this program up. The past 4 seasons they have been in the playoffs and have put several players into Division 1 superstarts (Fernando Velasco at UGA, AJ Harmon at UGA, and currently Sean Walker at Vandy). They still have some big games left with East Laurens, Screven Co. and the big showdown in Louisville on November 7th with Dublin (a rematch of last year’s 2nd round playoff game). Warriors have a very good defense with Nose Guard #34 Dexter Walker and Defensive End #19 Chris Crenshaw (Ga Tech Verbal Committment). Junior Quarterback sensation Barry Bostic is having a fantastic season and will probably rush for 1000 yds and pass for 1000 yds again this season. I wouldn’t be surprised to see them in the State Finals against Buford at the DOME> Go Warriors!

War Chant 2008: I’ll be heading to your area of the state next week, and I really wish I could be at that game on the 7th against Dublin — should be one of the best games in the state this season. If the Warriors keep on TCB, then I am sure that you will see plenty on them in this column next week.

I see there is a whole bunch of interest in AAA and AA football!! It is kind of like the minor league of AAAAA!!!

You are so ingnorant. Have you watched any 1,2 or 3 A football? I doubt it. The kids have the same heart and same talent as larger schools just that with smaller enrollments the talent is spread thinner. Each school has their own stars. Depth is where these teams suffer. Put a great A team in against a great AAAAA team and you’ll probably be surprised. Most likey it would be a great game initially, but with time and depth, the larger schools would prevail almost everytime, (though not an absolute). Not because they are better coached, or have more heart,,it would be merely due to depth.

Cairo and Lowndes would be intersting.

No go crawl back under that rock and bury your head even deeper.

5 comments in 2 days. My point is driven home!! Post a blog about any AAAA or AAAAA football subject and you will get pages and pages of comments. You see not much interest in the minor leagues!! YOU just don’t see my point, do you EP FAN!!!

Did you notice the AJC burried this blog off of the radar? Did you notice that it was even a headline? Either way, I understand your point that you that small school football isn’t as important as big school football.

Forget us stupid bloggers, fans, and media…….I would simply ask you to go to a A, AA or AAA game and then tell me that football isn’t important or relavant to those kids on the sidelines.

Do YOU get my point.

Your analogy is way off also. Minor league baseball is relative to talent level. HS Football classifications are relative to enrollment size ONLY.

Sample: 1994 Heisman winner Rashaan Salaam and Dean Steinkuhler, who won the Outland Trophy as the best collegiate lineman in 1983 both played 8 man football as did former Houston Oilers coach Jack Pardee.

School size has nothing to do with talent and the qualilty of football played.

Try and open you tiny little mind just a bit mistermak.

mistermak I think it is funny that a Camden fan would bash lower classes since most of the AAAAA bloggers think the Wildcats play in a “minor league” region. Seems like you of all people wouldn’t be taking swipes at anyone.

I think it is funny at how easy it is to get ya’lls feathers ruffled!!! I just stick the key in and turn it and watch the reaction!! SUCKERS!!!

Maybe you shouldn’t be so defensive. Or should I say easily offended. You probable are an Obama guy too!!

to mistermak,

Feathers aren’t ruffled. I”m an EP fan, and love the AAAAA football atmosphere I attend every Friday. I just think you are simple minded, and for whatever reason enjoy taking jabs at groups (the AAA, AA an A) schools when you really don’t have any knowledge about them. I’m just trying to enlighten you. If just being a Jerk is your ‘bag’ we’ll so be it, you are a great big ‘bag’ of it.

Hi: I have a daughter who attends Villa Rica High School and is in the band there. We were both looking at AJC sports this morning and I can’t help but wonder what it takes to get some recognition from the media in Atlanta. I realize that we had a bad loss at the beginning of the season to Pepperell, but the Dragons have proven to be no slouch being ranked #4 in the state. Since then we have not lost a game, defeating the #2 and #6 ranked teams in AAAA. I would greatly appreciate it if the AJC would take a look at the accomplishments of our team and coaching staff. They really deserve some recognition.
