AJC football rankings: Player of year? Lowndes’ Reid is frontrunner

Our recruiting guru, Michael Carvell, called me Friday night as I was driving back from the Lowndes-Northside game and was saying he wasn’t sure there was a clear-cut Player of the Year candidate in Georgia this year.

Maybe I was under the influence of the game I just witnessed, but I’d have to say it’s Greg Reid of Lowndes. He was the biggest difference between those two teams. He made three long runs, one on a punt return. That’s what swung that game. The week before, he had a 99-yard run from scrimmage and a fumble return for about 100 yards. He also had a 75-yard run on a sweep.

Reid starts on defense as a cornerback, his college position when he goes off to Florida if he sticks with that commitment. I know that Georgia’s Rodney Garner and Willie Martinez were in Valdosta hoping to change his mind. (And Garner and Martinez had to be impressed with their own commit, Abry Jones, who I thought was as good as advertised on Northside’s defensive line.)

In the rankings: I dropped Northside to No. 6. I could’ve put the Eagles anywhere from No. 4 to No. 9. … In a minor adjustment, Sandy Creek moved to No. 3 in AAAA after the victory against Whitewater. … Dalton fell out, and Sequoyah entered. … I hate to say this, but I hope Westside keeps winning because there’s not another team in AAAA that would be a solid No. 1 if Westside slips. … Westminster stayed in the rankings despite the loss to Lovett, and Callaway entered at No. 10 to replace Blessed Trinity.

And finally, to honor Northside’s 35-game winning streak that just ended, here are the longest streaks in history. I reported last week that Northside’s was seventh-best all-time. Actually, it ranks eighth:

47, Buford (2001-04)
46, Parkview (2000-03)
44, Lincoln County (1989-91)
38, Lincoln County (1976-78)
37, West Rome (1981-84)
37, Valdosta (1960-63)
36, Thomson (1966-69)
35, Northside (2006-08)
34, Southeast Bulloch (1972-74)
33, Americus (1974-76)
32, East Rome (1977-79)
