Happy Week 6, Free For All folks! Here’s what you can look for tonight on ajc.com/highschools:
Pollmeister Todd Holcomb will blog live from the big NWR-Lowndes game this evening. We’ll admit, though, that if the technology goes bonkers downstate things may get weird. Let’s all hope for good things.
Columnist Jeff Schultz will also post a piece from that game and we’ll work to get it on the HS page, too.
Tonight’s games w/photo galleries are…
Northside-Lowndes (duh)
Etowah-East Paulding
Douglass-M.L. King
Dacula-South Gwinnett
Lovett-Westminster
Central Gwinnett-Parkview
Early game: Photos only…
Columbia-Towers (game started at 5:30 so hopefully we’ll have photos from it soon)
Gamers but no photos (if you have any, send them our way)…
Marietta-McEachern
Landmark Christian-Whitefield Academy
GAC-Blessed Trinity
Whitewater-Sandy Creek
Dalton-Sequoyah
Roundups from all around Georgia…
State roundup: Covers mostly mid- to South Georgia
Metro roundup: Covers mostly outer perimeter/far suburbs; North Georgia
Greater Atlanta roundup: Covers Atlanta/City and inner perimeter/near suburbs
Look for photos to pop online throughout the evening and gamer alerts to show around 10 p.m. We’ll check in on this blog until around 10.
Keep it clean and respectful, send those scores/updates in and have fun!

Hello to all, I lived in Georgia for several years but I’m currently reisiding in Texas, I’m a big fan of Georgia High School Football (My son still plays is Georgia) and I sincerely believe is were the best football is played. But I want to take this time and do a little complaining. Since I been in Texas I have noticed that the fans and the media are crazy in love with HS Football every major newspaper dedicates several pages to the game and they also run a web site called TexasHSFootball.com. I have only notice this because of the difficulty I have had in getting GA Scores, Stats and news on our kids. Can we do something about this? Maybe a paper like the AJC one of the country’s top newspapers can get something started. Sorry if it sounds like complaining but I believe a site like this definetely help or kids with great exposure. Thanks

For the interested, here’s AJC staff writer Michael Carvell’s early take on the Columbia-Towers game:
Columbia 40, Towers 12: Columbia’s Nat Anthony rushed for 216 yards and three touchdowns to lead Columbia past Towers. Anthony had scoring runs of 30 and 2 yards in the first quarter as the Eagles improved to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in Region 5-AAA.
“After getting beat up by Cedar Grove a couple of weeks ago, I’m proud of the kids for not quitting and hanging there,” Columbia coach Kevin Latham said. “This was a game we should’ve won and we did.” — Michael Carvell

AJC Sports with all due respect I appreciate the information for the 120 metro Atlanta teams but my disappointment is in regards to the information for the other high schools not included. It is alot easier for Scouts, Fans and parents to get the information from one web site. I have spent endless hours trying to follow my son’s high school but the information is delayed in comparison the aforementioned website. Again, I am simply stating my observance of high school football for GA and the extent of support it receives from a recently displaced fan.

Harrison will shut EP up. EP was exposed tonight, their offense was just stagnant at times and I really dont see that QB taking them that far, I like their RB’s and WR’s and D but not sold on the QB. After watching EP, Etowah, and Harrison all play this year I think Harrison is the best team even with how much players they lost from last year. I think EP will give them a good game but I see Harrison coming out on top. Harrison can put up some points and EP looks like they are struggling on offense to be consistent.
I love watching #1 on EP, kick can lay some licks on ya.

Chris came to Paulding and he got see a gem…East wins 17 to 14 to go to 5-0. The game started with the Etowah Eagles sign proclaiming the RAIDERS to be “OVERRATED”…Well, Now they may want to redo the sign to read RAIDERS FINALLY RATED!!!!!
You saw a quality team effort tonight, Etowah played tough but a RAIDER stumble led them to their first T.D. and a slip up on “D” with broken pass coverage allowed a long passing T.D. late in the game to tie the score.
But a determined RAIDER Offense used run play after run play and STUFFED it down the EAGLE defense while they ran out the clock for the winning Field Goal.
The CANNON FIRED to signal the end of the game and ANOTHER RAIDER VICTORY!!!
Next week the village of North Cobb gets a visit from these UNDEAFEATED RAIDERS then the Oct. 17th date at “THE COB” with ole HOYADAWG and his hoya’s….

1st- you must not have been at the same game the rest of us were…EAST looked great tonight and the game went about as expected with 2 VERY good teams on the field.
Keep thinking as you do, but check what happenned last night to Harrison…East Freshman beat Harrison & then the J.V. beat Harrison in their game. You WILL see many of these players on Oct. 17th in the “COB” when you get a taste of what the rest of 5A AAAAA has already seen.

Homet,
Its “undefeated” You have spelled it wrong every time I have seen a post of yours.
Pretty biased view in my opinion from you of the great game we saw tonight. Honestly I have no dog in the fight but I saw an EP team with some real problems on the Lines and at QB. EP’s D is good but they had some major breakdowns that led to big plays.

All your last post did was confirm my thinking that you are clueless. Why mention JV and Freshman football? That has nothing to do with the Varsity game. Why would the same kids be out on the field? That would mean EP played their Varsity kids in JV? Thats funny and dumb, they will be dressed but not play. EP did not look that great tonight, you are biased, like I said I am not. No dog in this fight just like to watch some football. The lines got pushed around and the running game had a hard time getting rolling because of the OL, EP has some problems up front. The QB is not very consistent and makes some poor decisions. He missed a couple potential big plays with the WR’s open. EP did not play great like you say, if that was great then they wont make it far out of the region.

Good game tonight. To teams that were very evenly matched. EP was fortunate to get out with at win. Etowah quite frankly probably in all rights should have won the game. The coaches absolutely panicked and it started throwing the ball when it was obvious to everyone in the stands that all they needed to do was to be patient and run left. The coaches of Etowah like I said, absolutely panicked, and decided to go for the long ball at the most stupid time imaginable. Overall, EP probably played as smart of a football game as I’ve ever seen, and the coaches didn’t panic after it was tied and they simply knucked down, dug deep in the chest cavity when needed and got the blocks up front when necessary.
Also obvious to me was that both d-lines were tired in the fourth quarter.
All in all a good hard fought game, my hat is off the the Etowah kids, the EP kids, and the EP coaching staff……the Etowah coaching staff layed an egg tonight.
Regular season game definitely,,,just one more victory. Hoya’s can’t even think about you guys yet,,,there is a tough North Cobb team on the agenda next week.
All in all should EP ranked, are the over rated, under-rated, get respect or no respect……..who really cares… Personally I love the fight and the heart but there is a couple defeats on the horizon for the boys,,,,although I’m not convinced that it would necessarily be to Harrison….like I said though that is a long way off right now.

Best compliment you could ever give the EP folks,,,,,you said ‘save it for the playoffs’. You realize that other people even remotely acknowleding that we might make the playoffs is a fantastic thing. At 5-0 nothing is assured but I’m convinced they will keep taking it week by week and see where it leads. Assume nothing ever. They have come from little to where there are now so fast it is almost a validation that they have arrived……BUT don’t tell they boys,we want to keep them hungry.

im glad i LEFT VALDOSTA to come home to good ole’ East Paulding for that game. yes, the EP O-line is weak, they are all brand new starters. EP lost all of they’re offensive line last year and had to build a new one. the EP defense is the key to victory. Zack Gonosz (1), Steven Nix (26), and Matt Olson (22) just to name a few, are great players. as well as the rest of the D. offense is shaky, Idris (2) was put in when Groover should have been. hats off to Etowah for coming back and tying the game, but the last drive of the raiders was a VERY SMART one. and Stephen Cummins (96) wins another game for the Raiders. Man…That cannon was loud….

Bottom line ANOTHER RAIDER VICTORY!!!
I mentioned the freshman and J.V. games for a reason. Many of the J.V. guys DO GET playing time on friday nights and the quality of the VARSITY team shows up in the talent coming along on the other 2 squads. Of course I don’t expect you to understand that.

Raider Fan - I had never seen the Raiders play before and therefore had not commented on who they had played. You have mistaken my post for someone else. Absolutley the Raiders beat a good Etowah team. I believe both teams are palyoff teams. It remains to be seen where it shakes out in the seedings. There is a lot of football left. We both have North Cobb and Harrison left on the schedule. This is far from over. As far as the game goes, I have got to give it up for the Hornet. How can that little barrel be so loud? Also Realistic EP fan, you make many good points, and without going into a lot of details, there were probably some decisions made that could have swung the game, but that’s why we play. Both teams should be proud of there efforts and passion. Go Etowah!

For Jaybo:
Now this was an EAST game you should have been at…you would have seen the fight, and the heart this team has. This was one of the biggest game at EAST in “THE BONEYARD” so of course EVERYONE was loud and excited.
This began the 4 game run thru Etowah, North Cobb, Harrison, & Kennesaw Mtn. So far So Good!!!
Etowah took the field with a sign for their players to run thru that said Raiders Overated!!!…This game showed a lot, Yes East is a bit undersized in some positions…but they are talented and well coached.
Overated??? That’s OK…Also UNDEFEATED!!! (I checked the spelling so Geoff would not get wired again!)
Next up North Cobb…then our “date” with HOYADAWG and his mighty “HOYA’S” at “THE COB”!!!…Hmmm…maybe we could let the Freshman & J.V. handle that game they already whipped 2/3rds of the team!!!…LOL!…JUST KIDDING!!!!

Big Pappi…
There you are…Etowah has a real good team, a lot of size and a couple of the kids are TALL. Both teams played a good game and with very few ref. issues (I didn’t like how they spotted the ball twice, once for each team actually) and I DID NOT agree with that block in the back call the RAIDERS got but neither of the calls were game breakers.
Etowah travels good and the visitors side was as loud as we have had in a long time. That was great to see!!! I talked to several Etowah fans coming in and leaving and they were excited about the team and all were still talking about how good a game it was. The score really doesn’t tell the story because when a game goes down to the last seconds like this one ANYTHING can happen!!!
What do you think about your cheerleaders sign now…”OVERATED”, if we are I think so is Etowah because these 2 teams were very evenly matched!!!

Hey eaglenationrising, I wonder what you think of Lowndes now. You made some comments last week that I knew you were going to have to eat. The time has come my friend. I was as the “Concrete Palace” last nite and witnessed a really good football game. I was very impressed with your Eagle defense. They are big and strong and very physical. Your offense is also very capable of winning football games. Conrad Nix is a Winner. BUT, you guys see now just how good this LHS program has gotten. You kept making references to your record against LHS. That is all well and good and I will concede the facts but right now you and the Eagle Nation must bow down and Hail the King. I would not be surprised to see these teams in a rematch in the Dome. Hope to see you there

Hornet - We do have good fans,as do you. It shows your your enthusism(spell check)? I am not sure what the cheerleaders were thinking? Why give another team bulletin board material on the field??? I don’think our players thought much of it, as they just kind of went through it and straight to the bench. I believe they were more concerned with the game at hand.
Yes, we have some big strong kids, four of the offensive linemen are juinors including the TALLEST and have played together since middle school.
I believe both teams can go deep in playoffs, but still have to get there, avoiding letdowns along the way. Both should be in good shape as far as standings go as teams are starting to beat each other. Regardless of what happens, when playing either team the opponent will know they were in a game. Congratulations for now.

What is it with all these football fans of Warner Robins? I remember in 2006 when the Demons joined region 1AAAAA, all the talking about how they were going to dominate the region because of their past state and national championships. Hasn’t quite worked out that way has it? Now Northside joins region 1AAAAA and reading the past weeks comments…same old stuff…going to dominate….State champs…35 game winning streak…blah…blah…blah… Welcome to the region…Northside…with games against the Trojans…and Tift..and the Demons left, maybe you can back into a 3 or 4 seed. Not quite like the patsies you have been beating up on the last few years is it?

Congrats to East Paulding! Being a ‘95 graduate I can say EP deserves all the success that comes it’s way. Let the naysayers say what they want but after having a stagnant program for so many years we should be excited and others who aren’t as excited about their own team should question their own passion. I’ve been to every game this year and like what I’ve seen. Our D-line is a bit undersized and was exposed a bit against Mceachern and Etowah, but fundamentally we’re sound and seldom give up a big play. Our offense is well rounded which is nice because it doesn’t rely on a gimmick. We don’t put a lot of points up but I believe it would be next to impossible for anyone to shut us down completely. Real talk: Harrison will be the toughest test for sure, I believe it will be a hard fought game but EP will have to figure out how to eliminate those ill timed penalties to be successful. Nearly all of EP’s big plays this year have been called back due to penalties (at least the ones in recent memory). Keep up the hard work EP, and ignore the haters.

and Chris now understands why LOAD THE CANNON has such a meaning for the EAST FANS!!!

To: “By something about WR fans”. This blogg is about having clean fun but why come on with a big lie. That false statement you made about WR Demons and Northside saying they would dominate 1AAAAA region. That is a flat out lie. I don’t believe you will ever hear a team or coach make such an irrational statement. (excuse my spelling)

Question for other EP fans or coaches or anyone who knows.
Why is #1, Zack Gonosz the safety not getting more play from recruiters. I know I’m biased as a fan, but I’ve coached a bit, and really see a kid that has a ton of heart, is very instinctual, hits like a truck and to my knowlede never been out of a game even for a single play due to being dinges up. He’s fast, always makes big plays and is fearless. Is he under-sized? I think he’s like 5’11”, and right at 200lb. Grades?
I really can’t figure out why he would not be being pursued by a ton of Div-1 schools. Maybe he is but I can’t find any info and have not heard any skuttlebutt.
I do know that next year, I’ll be slot more nervous not having #1 at free safety. We’ve been spoiled these past few years having him back there.
Anyone, any insite?????

TODD H.
Why do you suppose Gwinnett County bloggers are now extinct? Didnt we have several last year? Are the stakes to high right now, lol.
How do you fell about Brookwoob/Grayson being the big game of the week this coming Friday?

To Jaybo: I really would not be that interested in seeing EP from this year play TCC this year. I think while EP’s playing nicely that there is a long way to go before they are even close to being ready for a south georgia challenge. Last years game: maybe TCC played great, and maybe EP played poorly…..not exactly sure it was tough to tell. TCC smacked em in the mouth early, and on the first drive they put a hat on the safety(#1), which meant that they had definitely scouted them well. I have a hunch TCC played perhaps a bit above it’s norm for last year and that EP played a bit below the norm,,,but 4 TD’s different,,,NOPE. It was a game in which the kids and staff learned the difference between wanting to be a champion caliber team, and actually being one. Next step, understanding that every single snap of ever single practice starting in the spring, and that ever lifting session is part of it. Any missed practices or skipped lifting or film sessions is a chink in the armor. But you know what,,,,,they are learning, and last night with Etowah, some of that learning came to fruition with the poise that was shown in the last 90 sec. Last night, at least for 1 night, the actually played like champions.
North Cobb is next…..and a wounded animal is not something that I like to come accross, especially with as much speed as they have on offense. Another tough one ahead.
Hoyadawg,,,,,we can talk in another week, we have to take care of some business first.

Question to the poster named: Something About WR fans?
Quickly: Name a city in Georgia that has a combined 6 State Championships and 2 National Championships.
Quick Answer: Only Valdosta, Georgia. Warner Robins is without a doubt the 2nd best football town in Georgia history. Even bad programs in Warner Robins (Houston County HS) advance in the state playoffs as the Bears have reached the state quarterfinals twice.
This concept that Northside-Warner Robins and Warner Robins are new to AAAAA is insane. Both high schools have played in the largest classification for decades. I believe there is a sense of confusion over proclamations from members of Region 1AAAAA that they are somehow welcoming these WR schools to large school football. It just doesn’t make sense.
As Lowndes County has risen, Valdosta has sank. It is VERY likely that Valdosta may not even reach the state playoffs. If Valdosta reaches the playoffs, they will most likely reach it as a 4th seed from the region.
Warner Robins fans have confidence because very few high schools have performed (on the field) as well as Northside. There is not a AAAAA program with more wins than Northside in the past 10 years. Northside only played AAAA for four years due to reclassification.

EagleNationRising..There you go again spouting off history…Question…How many Northside championships have come while you were playing in the largest class in the state?….True… Houston has reached the state semi’s twice…wonder how much of that can be related to them having to go through a region 1AAAAA schedule..any team that plays that tough of a region has an advantage in the playoffs..You are good at history look into how many region 1AAAAA teams advance through the first couple rounds of state year in and year out..I never said you haven’t played in the biggest classification in the state, You have…what you haven’t done is had to play the likes of Lowndes, Coffee, Tift, Valdosta, Warner Robins and Colquitt all in a 7 week span, have you?

UMMMM LAGRANGE: 11 STATE TITLES, 1 NATIONAL TITLE BY ITS LONESOME…1921, 1924, 1925, 1926, 1930, 1955, 1958, 1991(NATIONAL), 2001, 2003, 2004

ILL SAY IT AGAIN, A STATE TITLE IS A STATE TITLE IN ANY CLASS..SINGLE A GETS RINGS AND A TROPHY JUST LIKE 5A, SO JUST BECAUSE THE CHAMPIONSHIP ISNT FROM 5A DOESNT DIMINISH THE ACCOMPLISHMENT OF SCHOOLS IN LOWER CLASSES..THE BEST CLASS ISNT ALWAYS THE BIGGEST!!!

What on earth is going on at Stephenson?!!We need a new head coach ASAP!! Year after year we have some of Georgia’s best talent on the field and Gartrell does NOTHING with it. The offensive scheme is weak as hell! It’s too vanilla! Year in and year out we have a great D but you mean to tell me with all that talent and speed you struggle to put up 14pts. Just look at the luella game. The Stephenson O did nothing! After the game Stephenson should have been embarrased..luella acted like they won STATE! Not to take away anything from luella because they played a good game but Stepheson is the better team! But..once again the Stephenson coaching staff was out coached! I’m a HUGE Stephenson fan but after what I have seen last Friday night..there is no way in hell Stephenson will win state this year! We still have MLK, UNION GROVE, AND DOUGLASS to worry about. If we keep playing like we did friday we could easily end up being the 4th seed and go down to South Georgia and face Lowdnes in the first round…and get spanked!! It’s really time for a change at Stephenson! The Stephenson community needs to get some balls and let Gartrell know that his way is NOT working. Either get an explosive offensive coordinator who REALLY knows what to do with the talent and speed we have at Stephenson or hit the door Gartrell! Another first round lost in the playoffs CAN’T be tolerated. Stephenson is better than that! We REALLY need a younger coach with a creative mind.

SHS JAGUAR: Could not agree more. Stephenson has turned out loads of D-1 talent, but flames out in playoffs every year. They are the most over hyped team in the state with Brookwood a close second.

To ALL East Haters:
I have sat by and listened to all the East bashing long enough. East played a poor game Friday and still won. Pappi is right in that we havent played anyone good yet-Still havent(your class-less sign was true however-YOU were overrated and will end up losing more than that one)!
Second, East is not gonna get any respect from some of you period ! 5-0 and still a lot of you want to bash. I am realistic. We might lose one or two games and we might not go really deep in the play-offs. However, you just keep doubting and every week we will continue to improve and beat teams. East had several starters hurt and out, or you might have seen a little more of what many of you deem “talent”. Lets face it you lost so get over it.
Now finally, Zach does(#1) really well grade wise and has had some interest in recruiting. Talented kid also on the baseball side as well, so he might not play college football. East has a lot of good kids who are coached well and give 110%. I’ll take that any day and be happy with knowing we are play-off bound and will continue to suprise a lot of people. North Cobb want be an easy game so we better not look ahead to Harrison. Go Raiders and you guys still doubt and we will continue to enjoy shutting you up…

Good post “dj”, I forgot to mention the players who DID NOT play friday and EAST still handled Etowah. You are correct in that the score could have been higher had they played. I had predicted a T.D. from the special teams as I expected a runback from a kickoff or a punt but as you must know Ethan was sick all week with the flu and several others DID NOT PLAY!
You are also right about not looking past North Cobb, they can beat ANYONE on a given night and they would obviously like nothing more than to knock off EAST.
Regardless EAST is finally getting a bit of respect with Todd ranking the #10 in AAAAA this week.
LOAD THE CANNON…RAIDER NATION is heading to North Cobb!!!

Are we a Lowndes-Newnan-Camden caliber team? No. But we’re still the only school in the state that has never lost a AAAAA game! We win despite being undersized up front. Great coaching realized that and has us playing a very tenacious 3-4 and getting lots of turnovers, and rolling out a lot on offense. As for being weak at QB, which one? I didn’t see any Joe Montanas out there, but we had the 1st and 2nd best QB’s on the field Friday! Our #2 led us to the winning field goal. Meanwhile the guy in blue and gold threw three picks while running for his life. I give Etowah credit for playing hard and not giving up when they were down 14-0, but they were never in jeopardy of winning. Once again, we win all the close ones.

I think you need to re-read my post about #1Gonosz, I actually was trying to articulate that I think he deserves alot more attention than I’ve seen him getting. I asked about size csuse maybe he is at tad bit undersized but think receiiters really need see him in person to really appreciate the intensity he brings every night.
I asked about grades not to suggest they were poor only so that I could really find out why he would not have a dozen or more d1 schools banging his door down.
I do realize he’s a heck of a baseball player also and perhaps where us passion is.
All I know is from what I see of the kid, he should be playing sec, acc, big 10 or big 12 football.

East fans. Relax, you’re in the top ten and the reason you aren’t higher is because people aren’t used to seeing you guys do it yet. For the record I think you stomp North Cobb. Harrison is the game you need to win to rise in the rankings. You beat Harrison and Etowah and a decend North Cobb team and that’s a nice resume this year. Great Coach, Good defense and coming along nicely on offense. You’re getting there EP.

ABOUT TIME!!!! What do we have to do to get Gartrell out at Stephenson??? again this year the same ol old…why in the world would you have 2 minutes on the clock and have your Q.B. come to the side line for the next play after you run the same running play 12 times straight… the Jags have at least 4 receivers who run 4.3 forties and a ga. top 150 Q.B. who can throw at least 65 yds with accuracy…He did the same thing with all the other past all- americans and how can you come to a football game as a coach un prepared to coach.. who runs a Q.B. to the sideline every play when you have subs going in every play??…Gartrell… who runs the football 95% of the time even when you are down with 2 min. on the clock?..Gartrell…who is tired of coming up short evry year because of Gartrell the whole STEPHESON HIGH SCHOOL COMUNITY…THIS THE OFFICIAL WIN STATE OR GARTRELL IS GONE CAMPAIGN!!!!!!!!! Tight Ends can catch too…Gartell with your No Coaching A..
