AJC Football Predictions: Northside-Lowndes will be close
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
The Thrilla in Manilla. The War on the Shore. The Trial of the Century. The Rumble in the Jungle. The War of Northern Aggression. The Shot Heard Round the World.
We sports fans (and history buffs) love a good title to throw on a game or event that transcends the sports and takes on epic proportions.
Such is the case this week as the state’s football senses focus on a concrete structure off of I-75 South in a town that has become synonymous with high school football excellence. Make no mistake about it; tonight’s game between Northside (not Warner Robins) and Lowndes (not county) is the biggest sports event of the weekend in the state of Georgia.
The Bulldogs are off. The Falcons are, well, the Falcons. If they were playing this game at Bobby Dodd on Saturday night, it would be a sellout — something the Jackets probably won’t get against Duke.
Sports writers, venters, bloggers and columnists have had this date circled on the calendar since last December when Lowndes wiped up North Gwinnett for the Class AAAAA state title and Northside claimed its second consecutive Class AAAA title. So, finally, let the fun begin, and if the game is indeed a classic, someone come up with a heckuva title for it.
Northside is averaging 27 points per game and giving up 9.2, most of which has come in mop-up duty. Lowndes’ offense scores at a clip of 38.8 a game and has three shutouts while allowing an average of 4.2 points per game on defense.
Running back Greg Reid and the Lowndes offense is the unstoppable force, while the Northside defense of tackle Abry Jones and linebacker Eric Fields is the immovable object. But something has to give, and it is on the other side of the ball for both teams.
Flat out, I think Lowndes’ defense is just better than Northside’s offense. No longer is wizard Marquez Ivory back there to bail the Eagles out when things break down, and Lowndes has a defense that will make an opposing offense simply break down. I’ll be in other parts of the state, but someone please TiVo this one for me. Lowndes 21, Northside 17.
Now that the BIG ONE is out of the way, it was a 7-3 record for the peerless prep pigskin prognosticator (that’s a lot of alliteration for you English majors out there) last week. That’s about what you could expect from a BCS-shaking weekend as Newnan made a mockery of the Upset Special of the Week, and Marist made a mockery out of all things having to do with Tucker.
Region 5 ramblings — There are two big games this week in Region 5-AAAAA, and one has state repercussions. East Paulding and Etowah meet in a battle of respect since both teams are undefeated and feel they should be ranked. After this week, one of them will deserve to be. Load the cannon, boys, because I want to hear it fire a few times. Whitfield is coming to Paulding County! Raiders blast the Eagles. … The other game is between Marietta and McEachern — two teams that are “fair to middlin” at best, but they have a good history. I’ll give the edge to the Indians in Powder Springs.
A lot in a little — Running out of space, so here goes a quick rundown of the best of the rest. In Gwinnett, take South Gwinnett at home, Grayson to keep on rolling and Blessed Trinity to top GAC. Gwinnett Rules! … No. 9 Carrollton is a lot tougher at home, but still take them over Cartersville. … No. 2 Westminster to handle Lovett … Upset Special of the Week: Sequoyah at home over No. 3 Dalton. … M.L. King to trounce Douglass. … Whitewater in an aqua-battle over Sandy Creek. … Whit(e)field Academy (you just knew I was partial to the Wolfpack) over Landmark Christian.
Pick / pan our Predix: Tell us how wrong - or right - we are with this week’s picks. And send in your predictions for Week 6.

East-Etowah is about as close a matchup as you can get, on paper. East is scoring 23.8 and giving up 9.5, Etowah is 26.2 and 9.8. Etowah has a good running back, so does East, and a receiver and free safety. Common opponent is McEachern, Etowah beat them 14-0 and East 17-14 but East had three turnovers in that game. East beat Rome, Etowah beat Kennesaw Mountain. Allow three points for the cannon and East wins a close one, 17-13.

Chris,
looks like you have your smart hat on this week. I believe you nailed one key to the Northside - Lowndes game but you also missed one.
Key - Lowndes still has offensive superstar Greg Reid while Northside lost offensive superstar Marquez Ivory to graduation. Edge to Lowndes.(If Ivory was still playing, edge to Northside)
Key - game is at Lowndes. Northside plays better at home than away. Edge to Lowndes. (If game was at Northside, edge to Northside).
For Northside to to win, their defense will need to force turnovers and score. They have done this in several other games so its possible for Northside to win.
Go Eagles

Guys, not sure what is going on with the prep blogs over the last 20 hours or so. I’m not in on the technical part of it, but it seems there are a lot of comments in our system that haven’t been published on the blogs.
I was wondering what I was doing wrong with so few comments on this thing when I got on at 5:30. Any way, be patient and maybe we can get this straightened out. Maybe all of the Northside fans hacked into our system and caused it to crash after my pick (just kidding).

Chris- You are drinking the “East” Kool Aid. Is that a turkey leg or just your foot in your mouth? Etowah does not get blasted. If this is a blow out, Etowah wins big!! Have fun with Hornet at your tailgate, at least you chose the better game to attend.

Lowndes has done a lot of trash talking for a game that hasn’t taken place yet. NHS will bring enough fans to Lowndes that they will think they are in Eagle country and take away their home field advantage. Lowndes had better buckle their chinstraps because they are gonna be in a battle for the ages. It will all be left on the field no matter what. Somebodies short win streak is gonna come to an end. Go EAGLES. Another LOwndes team is gonna lose!

Lowndes might win…but there is nothing more scary than an eagle team flying under radar.
Other interesting games concerning central GA…
Northeast and Southwest battle it out in Macon. Funny to have these 2 teams playing for some notoriety and respect! I had more family go to Southwest..so GO PATRIOTS!

Well the blog looks better this morning…I also tried to post and it would not show up…I thought Big Pappi had drove to ATL and unplugged something…LOL!
Well the ole’ countdown clock is really tickin’ hard now…with only 13+ hours to go…TICK…TICK…TICK!!!…BOOOOOM!!! Our cannon signals the start of our MUCH anticipated match-up…
Big Pappi…I could be suprised but I don’t think you have to worry about that “blow-out” you mentioned…this one is too closely matched up with two good teams facing each other. I am looking for one of the best games played in years at “THE BONEYARD”.
I still can’t see our “D” giving up many points, especially since they are defending the “Home Turf”, and our special teams will score at least 7 points, so I am going with…
EAST 24 / ETOWAH 13
That gives Chris the chance to see / hear the CANNON at least 6 times!!!
Hey JAYBO you never said who you are predicting … Lowndes or Northside? Just curious…
By Big Pappi
October 3, 2008 7:08 AM | Link to this
Hornet - Honestly don’t think you will score on special teams, or hardly at all. This game is dominated in the trenches by Etowah. Etowah will knochk your cannons “barrell” into the “home turf”. Simply put Etowah 21 - East 7. Fly high!

For: HOYADAWG & Co.:…
Thursday night at your “COB” saw a prelude to our Oct. 17 “DATE”…when the EAST Freshman won 21-7 to go 5-0 on the season & our J.V. won 16-6 to go 4-1 on the season (the one loss being at McEachern and it was called due to curfew before the game ended)…
You will see a lot of the players again on the field Oct. 17th…

Good news….at least for some. Lowndes biggest offensive lineman Big Ed (6-4..280 lbs) is back tonight after missing the last 2 ball games due to injury. Ed is a junior this season who was a starter as a sophomore last year and as the year went along became quite a force. Big Ed….glad to have you back and just in time.

I don’t like that trenches talk, that’s not our strongest area. Still you’re going on the road to a very hostile environment and Etowah sounds like a team that’s just a little too desperate to avoid losing at least four games for the first time in 21 years! Loss one comes tonight, East 27 - Eagles 13. Let the cannon roar!!!!

Howdy fellas, I am writing from my office here in Dallas,Tx. Being a former “Viking” from Lowndes i will have to go with my team as i have been to some of the games the past couple of years and watched them play. I remember when they played Brookwood for the State Title a couple years back and everyone was talkin about how Brookwood was going to demolish Lowndes. Lets just say this, Do not underestimate this team as they are fundamentally sound and are prepared for each game. I am not sure of what the score will be but i do know deep inside Lowndes will be the victor. If not, Then my hat goes off to NHS as i am sure this will be a well played game. As far as the game being aired on TV tonight , It will be on the CBS Sports College channel for those wanting to watch it. Gametime is 8pm. So while a lot of us will not be at the game we can all cherish in the fact that we can either watch it on TV if you have cable or satellite or if your not able then you can listen to the game on either schools websites that will list the radio station that usually host their gametime show. Once again , Gametime is : Fri, Oct 03 08:00 PM Regular Season High School Football CBSCS HS Football: 2008 Season - Northside Warner Robbins (GA) @ Lowndes (GA) - 10/3

Fri, Oct 03 08:00 PM Regular Season High School Football CBSCS HS Football: 2008 Season - Northside Warner Robbins (GA) @ Lowndes (GA) - 10/3
You may also listen to it on the radio listed at each schools website that usually hosts the shows. Being a former “Viking” and knowing what i have seen them do over the past few years i will have to say Lowndes will win this one although i do not know what the final score will be. We have been the underdog a lot in the past when playing teams that were supposed to be “real good”. I know McPherson has his team focused and ready as he does in every game they play so tonights game should be interesting . My hats off to all the players of each team and that no one gets hurt. I will be here at home in Dallas watching the game with my beer and popcorn in hand. It should be a good one. Be sure to notice the nice stadium facilities as well as they have remodeled over the past year so know that NHS will be coming into a 1st class facility and will be taken care of in true southern hospitality aka a$$ whooping. Have a great day !

To Mistermak: Yes, the game is on tv depending upon what carrier you have. If you have directv, it is on CBS College Sports ( for my area, that is Channel 613). Go Vikes!
To Mike: Lowndes has not done anymore trash talking than Northside. Fans on both sides have had a lot to say. However, it really doesn’t matter what the fans say, it’s all about the statement made on the field. Again, I say, “GO VIKES!”

Big Pappi - I know you’re right, I just let the hornet get me all fired up. I don’t think anyone knows who will win this one, we just have opinions and loyalties. I expect a very tough close game, but I started adding all the intangibles, 3 points home field, 3 points cannon, three points for the COWBELLMAN and pretty soon it was looking like a blowout. I’ll be happy to Al Davis this one and just win baby! I hope you enjoy your visit to the Boneyard, but not tooo much!

Homet, all I can say to that idiotic coment is, If you play our freshman or Jv on the 17th you will be great. It also sounds like you are suggesting that you played many of your varisity players in the Jv game. I would exspect nothing less from EP.Trust me , I have learned that what happens in jv has very little to do with friday. I believe marietta beat our jv last year by 20 somthing, and we turned around and beat their V by 30. the same with mceachern.I really can’t believe i’m even writing this. I hate dto depend on another team to do our dirty work, but go EAGLES!
