State report: The Great Northwest, Take 1
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
The state HOT and NOT report moves to the great Northwest this week where temperatures are always a little bit cooler, but the football heats up the fans. Again, we will divide the Northwest into two reports. This week, we focus on the Class AAAAA and AAAA teams in the area.
HOT
> East Paulding: The Raiders have made the transition from Class AAAA to AAAAA with relative ease this season with their biggest tests on the horizon. East Paulding takes on Etowah, North Cobb, Harrison and Kennesaw Mountain during the next four weeks, and coach John Reid’s team and the East Paulding fans can earn the respect in AAAAA that they are looking for.
> Dalton: Cat scratch fever is growing in Dalton, and with a 5-0 overall record and 2-0 mark in region play, the third-ranked Catamounts have taken care of business. However, Dalton ends the season with games against Sequoyah, Cass, Rome and Northwest Whitfield before playing a region play-in game for a chance to make the playoffs. Nothing is guaranteed for coach Adam Windegarden’s team.
> Rome: The No. 9 Wolves dropped the season opener to East Paulding, but have looked impressive since then. A gritty 26-21 victory over Sequoyah should assure that Rome will be 6-1 headed into the two-game gauntlet of Northwest Whitfield and Dalton.
> Northwest Whitfield: The jury is still out on the Bruins, who have a 4-1 record overall, but also sport a black eye with a 21-14 loss to Hiram. Mike Falleur’s team played 12 games last season, but the playoffs still a long way to go and the bulk of NW Whitfield’s schedule is back-loaded.
NOT
> Murray County: Victories will be hard to come by for the Indians, who were 0-for-last season. Murray County already has a win this season, and three could come their way by the end of the year.
> Paulding County: The Patriots (1-3) have given up more than 30 points in their three losses this season, and their only victory came against 1-4 Haralson County.

CHRIS, You have allowed the EP fans to draw you onto their bandwagon…I have been reading the blogs and have seen all of this unfold. Please…get off of EP’s jock!!!!! Listen at what you said..”EP has made the transition from AAAA to AAAAA with relative ease, with their biggest test on the horizon.” How can you say they’ve made the transition with ease when they really haven’t played anybody….you just admitted that they have not faced any tough opponents yet. So again, get off their jock!! You can’t say they’ve transitioned into AAAAA with ease until they beat some teams of merit!!! Anyway, this really doesn’t have anything to do with me because I am a diehard, ride or die TCC fan!!! But I am also a fan of football in general, and when I see certain things going on that I disagree with, even in print media, I have to call it out!!!!

Regarding East Paulding: Yes, I agree with you Chris I am a AAAAA fan and this team the East Paulding Raiders countinues to win and they just moved up from AAAA. I agree with you again, the next 4 games are going to be very tough for the Raiders. But I think East Paulding will dig deep and pull out another undefeated season and shock region 5-AAAAA. And then all teams in AAAAA would have no choice but to respect them.
I still think region 1-AAAAA is the toughest but but watch out south Georgia come play-off time East Paulding HAS and continues to make a name for them self and will not bow down to no one.
I pick Lowndes over Northside this Friday.

THANKS CHRIS: for the “HOT” listing for EAST and you could not be more correct…the next 4 games beginning this week with Etowah, then North Cobb, Harrison and Kennesaw Mountain will show if EAST can play with the real “BIG DAWGS” in 5A AAAAA.
Many schools, and I know lots of the posters on this blog, would say going 1-3 or even 2-2 thru this stretch would be considered good for the 1st year in 5A AAAAA play, but I assure you the RAIDERS from EAST are looking for NOTHING LESS than going 4-0 and PROVING they belong!!!!
The countdown clock continues to friday night…58 Hours and counting…TICK…TICK…TICK…BOOM!!! and another one bites the dust!!!

I was wondering where you had been this week…the problem you have with EAST is that you are using ONLY one game to judge them by. I can ASSURE you that last years TCC game was not ANYWHERE near a normal EAST RAIDERS game. TCC dominated the RAIDERS from the start and nobody has tried to say anything different about that 1 GAME!!!
BUT…that was ONLY 1 GAME and EAST has a regular season winning streak going back now to early 06, with MANY other quality playoff wins. Also since then the RAIDERS (as good teams do) brushed off that game and went right back to their winning ways!
The problem was before this season EAST got virtually NO press coverage, print or otherwise, and this year they have begun to see a bit of media exposure. The AJC has gave them print exposure, all 3 Atlanta TV channels have been to the games and shown some highlights and we are getting mentioned on the friday night high school 107.1 radio talk show more.
This is NEW for schools in our area and YES it is exciting to see it happen. But it is well deserved and hard earned to this point, also they know how quickly it can fade. Why don’t you sit back and see what they do with these next 4 games and then say if EAST still hasn’t played any quality teams!!!

EAST FANS
Remember were small, slow and have been a flash in the pan and have no business being in 5a or 4a
In reality anyone who truly knows football has noticed the turn around in Paulding county! Its a 800 pound Gorilla and he’s growing every day.

While I agree that East Paulding has been winning, they haven’t beaten a team in AAAAA that has a winning record, and they barely made it past AAAA Rome in week 1. I think that it is a little too early to say whether or not they are hot until after they play the powerhouses in 5-AAAAA, Harrison and Etowah. Game of the week for this week - East Paulding vs. Etowah. Should be a showdown.

another school in the west metro area that is hot is Chapel Hill. Yes the season is young, but they are off to a 4-1 start which is amazing since the school has never had a winning season. New Head Coach Chris Parker and his staff deserve all the credit. The Panthers have always had talent, but Coach Parker is finally using it and teaching the boys how to win ! Only lost was to Newnan who introduced the Panthers to 5 AAAAA Football !

jim: I went from Paulding County to the north in doing this report. Chapel Hill will be looked at when I take a view of west Georgia.
Jaybo and Jim
Are McEachern, Marietta and South Cobb AAAAA schools? Did East Paulding beat them? That sounds like an easy transition to AAAAA to me. I didn’t claim they were going to win state, just that in the Northwest, they are hot. Jaybo, by your logic, then TCC shouldn’t be ranked since their wins have come against teams with losing records and Northside shouldn’t be considered a very good team either since the teams they played haven’t been powerhouses this year.

JIM:
The teams Chapel Hill beat this year have a combined 5 wins and 15 losses
I don’t think those teams rank as 5A powerhouses But thanks for kicking East to make your point for your team
I love it! btw Calpreps picks East over Etowah

I have been laying low this season and enjoying the back and forth between several bloggers. All I want to say here is that the old “they haven’t played anyone good yet” spill is way past OLD. Every time E.P. does well someone who doesn’t like them starts with that worn out spill mentioned above. Undefeated regular season plus two wins in the playoffs and now 4-0 this season. So the last 16 teams E.P. has played are no good according to several people here. I think those few folks should just admit that the Raiders are for real and quit pouting about it. O.K. now those people can take their shots at me because you know they will. I’ll just sit back, read and enjoy more E.P. wins in AAAAA. Go Raiders.

Listening to all the East fans defending their run, and rather or not they belong in 5A makes me think they are a little worried. And they should be! This is a brutal stretch beginning with the newly dubbed “America’s team”, Etowah Eagles. Fly high Etowah…

Come on Chris you are tripping my friend!!!! Yes, McEachern and Marietta are AAAAA schools, but beating them don’t qualify you as a hot team because they aren’t that good. Honestly Chris, you have been suckered into all of the EP hype on this blog…bottom line!!! Now, as far as TCC is concerned….I’ve admitted that we are just an average team this year, so you can throw that lil come back out of the window!! Also, you cannot find one time on this blog where I’ve gotten on here whinning about where TCC is ranked…not one time!!! This argument wasn’t about rankings anyway, it was about a “supposedly hot team” making a “relatively easy transition” into AAAAA! Its to soon to say that Chris, so your argument is very flawed sir!!

Wow, promise you some good old BBQ and you are on the EP bandwagon. Your dad taught you too well about making sure you aren’t late for dinner. If EP can come thru the next four games 2-2 or 3-1 then I will be impressed but not until then.

LOL!…DUCK CHRIS…Ya got em’ firing at you now…LOL
JAYBO…You are a trip…What’s it gonna take to prove to you that EAST can play ball up here…Listen ANY team can have ONE BAD GAME, it is unfortunate that EAST had that game against TCC last year and TCC (as I have been saying) brought their A+++ game that night! Come on, I give you more credit than that, other than that game, be straight, you have NEVER seen EAST play…have you?
This Blog was started and TITLED…WHO’S HOT & WHO’S NOT… and like it or not…EAST IS HOT!!!
FOR wildmanhoya…I said earlier someone would jump in here calling for a 2-2 run for EAST but what if they went ONLY 1-3, but that win was an HUGE win over your Hoya’s AT HARRISON??? What would you say then? and don’t be worrying about 2-2…be ready to post when the EAST RAIDER’S GO 4-0….!!!
THE CANNON IS LOADED & THE RAIDER NATION IS READY!!!

OK guys, then an undefeated team doesn’t deserve a hot designation when talking about a specific region of the state? I’m not thinking about what bloggers have said when coming up with these lists. Do I think NW Whitfield is one of the best teams in the state? No, but they are hot right now. That may change in a week (and by the way this state report blog has been something akin to an SI cover jinx), but right now, you have to say EP is hot right now. Come Friday night, that might change.
Dalton is on my list, but I think they have a good chance of losing at Sequoyah this week. Should I take them off of the list? I think you guys are looking at this the wrong way. I’ve already gone on the record as saying that East Paulding would finish the regular season 8-2, but that doesn’t change the fact that they are hot right now. Until they lose, that assessment remains the same.

but right now, you have to say EP is hot right now. Come Friday night, that might change.
Yep it sure could, can you add a designation ABOVE HOT to SCORCHING when they send the EAGLES back to the wilds of Cherokee!!! Hey that’s not a bad thing guys you’re in good company with 20 OTHER teams that took the field against our RAIDERS FROM EAST

CHRIS, I have to agree with wildmanhoya and Jaybo, you have bought into the hype. You may be right, but I think you jumped on the band wagon at the wrong time. We are about to see how well East eases into to the region. If East goes 4-0, or even 3-1, in the next four weeks I will be the first to say you were right. If my prediction is right I will also let you know. What about Etowah? they are pretty hot. By the way on the other blog you ask East to talk about their team, well if you hav’nt noticed, they dont. All they talk about is themselves, the crowd, the cowbells, the ship, and of course the cannon, The cannon that it seems you will loading on friday night, while you are having your BBQ

One other thing. if Ep beats the Hoyas but EP goes 1-3 in their upcoming four game stretch I will say the Hoyas are still in good shape to win the region. You see, we already beat North Cobb and Kennesaw and have yet to play Etowah. Figure it out. You will have lost to all of the other three.

Homet! Hey man, you’ve been looking for Jaybo and bloging with him so much lately, I think you have become as short sighted as he is. He keeps pointing to the one game against TCC. Yes they whipped us (EAST). He always forgets the next game in the dome that they got whipped, and I mean whipped! The point is, no matter how good a team is, they can come upon a loss! East is a quality team, they have proved it over and over. Jaybo will never admit it because he has to cling to it till TCC can overcome this year. They are just average and Jaybo has a hard time accepting this. His last big glorious moment was last year when they beat us. We all know the measure of a great victory is in the quality of their opponent. So I say thank you Jaybo, the more you dwell on TCC’s last great victory, the better you make East look. Now, let’s get it on with Etowah! I can’t wait to hear the cannon roar!

Hey raider, I usually don’t respond to ignorance on the blog, but I couldn’t let this pass! First and farmost, you need to get your facts straight before you try to step to Jaybo!!! You must be drinking heavily or smoking something because you really got your facts twisted dude. Since you got facts twisted, let me help you understand a few things: 1)I have not mentioned the TCC-ep game on this blog in quite some time—-check it out. Homet is the one who keeps bringing up that game, not me. I only bring that game up when that punk azz eastbeast try to slide back onto the blog. 2)Since you brought it up, let me help you out because I am a kind man and hate to see people speak ignorantly…yes TCC lost in the semis last year in the Dome, but a 10-7 lost to Ware Co. doesn’t say you got whipped!! Do you know anything about the game of football or did you get bored and just wanted to hear yourself talk!!?? All that matters is we lost, but we didn’t get whipped!!! 3)I have said all along that TCC is a average team at best this season and I have been very accepting of this. You see we have gone deep into the playoffs so many seasons, that it makes easier to accept a mediocre team some time. I understand that in High School your talent level will not be up every season, so I’m cool with that. 4)I can tell that You arrogant, never won any real big game, ep fans are still hurt from last season because you are the ones who keep bringing it up! You were overrated, got whupped, now get over please…I sure have!!!! 5)Didn’t you learn in school that the context is just as important as the text? If you had gone back and read the blogs you wouldn’t have sounded so foolish. No, you saw Homet responding to me by bringing up the TCC game and just assumed that I had said something about it and I hadn’t. Read sir and get an understaning first, before you ever try to expose Jaybo and end up getting your self exposed!!

I’m just gonna point out that no matter if you win by an inch or a mile, winning is winning. Barely beat Rome, yet they have dominated every other team they’ve played. Last year Cherokee was #1 and supposed to whip EAST, yet EP had a #2 play on ESPN’S TOP TEN against Cherokee in their own house and took it to them. I can’t understand why no one can say, “East Paulding is a good football team.” Us EP fans do not want you to love our team or think we are the best, or i don’t atleast. I just want to know that we have the respect of our opponents. I’ll be a man and say that Etowah, North Cobb, HARRISON, and Kenn. Mtn. are good football teams and i respect them as an opponent, but i think that East Paulding can beat them all. Everyone has been overlooking us lately, and that’s fine w/ me, the less press coverage, the less the other team is ready to be dominated, but all i want to hear is nothing but respect for each other’s opponents.

To Hoyadawg:
Want some plain talk about the team: Ratings based 1-10 with 10 being the best.
Offense Skill Positions: 8, it would be a 10 if their QB had more experience and their change of pace QB/TB was healthy (he’s a game changer)
Offensive Line: 6 (they arent’ the biggest but show alot of good coaching based on the excellent technique I see. They were considerably smaller than Marietta’s D-line, but absolutely dominated them)
Defensive-Line 7 (Improved greatly from week 1)
Linebackers: 5 (weakest part of the defense, can slow to react and have difficulty with recognizing then dropping into pass coverage).
Defensive Backs 9 (fantastic veteran crew that is lead by #1 Zack Gonoz,,he’ll light em up when they come his way, one of the best pure hitters I’ve seen at the HS level)
Kicker: 7 much improved Punter/Punt Team: 3 but starting to improve. Punt Return Team: 8 Kick Return Team: 6
All in all they are a well coached team that play very physical in all aspects of the game. The most talented and biggest,,no, but they support each other and play as one.
GO Raiders…….Etowah….time to face the music you’re coming to our house now and you’ll be alble to remove the UN and just call yourselves DEFEATED, when its over. See you in 25.5 hours.

What is up with everyone talking about TCC? last year was not eps normal game. TCC were gigantic compared to East Paulding. East Paulding is not size oriented but more speed like. They beat Etowah and destroyed Cherokee this year 42 to 0. if that is not determination i do not know what is. we are in a 3 way tie for first in the AAAAA region with Harrison and Etowah. Not for long though. EP is the bomb.
