AJC football rankings: Historic trappings for Northside-Lowndes
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
OK, Northside or Lowndes? Take sides now.
When’s the last time a regular-season game was this big? I don’t mean big in terms of “must win” because both teams will be going to the playoffs, win or lose Friday. But has there ever been a game where two teams with this much recent success have met?
We all know the history: Lowndes, the reigning Class AAAAA champ, has won three of the past four titles in the highest class and is ranked in every national poll I can find. Northside has won 35 consecutive games and consecutive Class AAAA titles and also is nationally ranked.
Where does this game rate in history in terms of a great programs hooking up at the peak of their greatness?
Before we get to that, there is other news
Westside-Macon is No. 1 for the first time ever.
Appling County is No. 5 in Class AA after the victory against Charlton County. Charlton is No. 8.
Thomasville is 0-4 for the first time in history but more amazingly is unranked by the AJC for the first time this season. While stubborn, I do have limits. I still see T’ville in the state playoffs, maybe even the quarters. But I heard Brooks County really dominated.
Marist, 38-0: I don’t know what say about that except never bet against Marist. A few Tucker friends told me they didn’t think Tucker deserved to be No. 1 even before the game. Tucker became the first team since Roswell in 2006 to go from No. 1 to unranked. Roswell came back and won a state title.
Last week, I did a Take 10 on the coaches with the best chance of winning state titles at two schools. Well, scratch John Starr from the list. Chattooga fired Starr, who won state with Josey in 1995, the day after a loss to Armuchee last week. “I didn’t see it coming,” Starr told the Rome Tribune. Well, who did? Chattooga was 3-0 and had been pretty good, though never really good, in Starr’s 12 seasons.
So who you got? Northside or Lowndes? And why? Declare now.
Todd talks back: Holcomb mixes it up with you all week long. Catch his running commentary in Poll Talk Monday-Friday. Leave comments, questions, etc., here and return to talk about this week’s rankings.

Peace, to all my south Georgia friends. Looks like the top region has a huge game. I’m going with Lowndes over NHS.27-21.Todd, It looks like there are some teams making it difficult for Etowah to get into the top ten.

This is gonna be a very exciting game who ever wins will more than likely win the region but dont overlook the Coffee County Trojans or any team for that matter

Lowndes usually does its best at home but they’ll have to play better than they did against tough Tift. Four turnovers won’t make it against NSWR. If it hadn’t been for those four goofs, LCHS would probably have put two more touchdowns on the board. I don’t see a blowout on this one. The only saving grace for the Tift game is it gave the Vikes a good, much needed workout. No more cakewalks in Region One. Don’t count Valdosta out either. They beat WR convincingly in every stat except the score. The cats have got to stop self-destructing when they get inside the 20.

I think Tucker’s demotion is fair, especially in view of the fact that they were overrated to start with. At the moment, especially if QB Chris Beck is sidelined, Tucker probably wouldn’t beat any of Todd’s top ten. They have a couple of weeks to heal and a probable walkover against North Springs before facing Chamblee… but I’m fairly satisfied Tucker will finish 7-3. If everyone is healthy in seven weeks, maybe they can pull it together for the playoffs.

I was at the Tift-Lowndes game and I have seen two Northside games this year. If the Lowndes team I saw at Tift this past Friday is the real Lowndes team then Northside will win by two scores. Lowndes had four turnovers, but it wasn’t neccesarily sloppy Viking play, as much as it was good Devil play. I hope Lowndes brings a better game next week, as will be at the game, and I hope to see a classic.

Wow, a Top 10 Team loses to another Top 10 team and it is a rivalry and they drop out all together? Just goes to show that the rankings are very suspect and don’t really have any meaning because there is no true formula for your picks. You just put who you feel in the spots that you feel they go, no true system, but that is okay, it is something that people talk about and that is all you are trying to get is people talking.

Northside is still looking for respect in Region 1. A few Lowndes fans have stated that there is “NO WAY” Northside will beat Lowndes.
Northside is no doubt an underdog, with Lowndes having one of their best teams ever. I think most will pick Lowndes to win.
Northside goes in to this game and every game expecting to win. Being behind or in close game does not unnerve the Eagles. When the going gets tough, they buckle up and play harder.
I’m confident that the Northside Coaching staff will do an excellent job preparing the Eagles to win.
Even so, I expect an up hill battle for Northside, but if Lowndes opens the door for an Eagle win, Northside will rush in and take it.

Coach Rob Consider that Tucker was probably a more reasonable 4 or 5, getting pummelled by Marist SHOULD bounce them out of the top ten… maybe 11 or 12 right now. Yes, there is only so much Todd can do, certainly he can’t attend many games in person. So he starts in the pre-season with a best guess based on returning players and, to some degree, the reputation and tradition of the school. Then, with each week of results, he learns more and makes adjustments. His choices are not all that different from the AP or Massey. Those of us close to Tucker football took that ranking with a huge dose of salt, held our breath and whistled past the graveyard hoping the wheels wouldn’t come off. Marist blew up the tires, the engine and the windshield. Now we find out if Tucker has any resilience. Keep in mind that Habersham Central was highly regarded before the season started, too, and where are they now? No the rankings are not perfect, but neither is high school football. The quality of play is wildly erratic, from team to team, and even from player to player on the same team. A great majority of these kids will never play ball beyond the high school level, so even the best coached teams can become demoralized and fall apart. Don’t be too hard on Todd. With Tucker idle this week, I’d love to come down for the Lowndes-Northside game, but nobody up here has enough gas :) and I can’t afford to get stranded.

Lowndes and Northside WR are very close to the same team and have been for years if you follow their history but this is gonna be a DEFENSIVE game with a low score possibly 10-7. No matter who wins, GO VIKES, this could possibly be the best game in years.

Northside may beat Lowndes, if they can stop the run. Greg Reid has the “BIG HEAAD” now… which is going to get Lowndes into trouble. Balance on both sides of the ball will prove to win the game. Coffee has that balance. Northside will visit Coffee in two weeks…. We’ll see what they bring….

What a game it will be this Friday night! Lowndes is “expected” to win, so more pressure will be on them. Who ever loses shouldn’t (if a decent score) drop much pass 5 or 6 in the rankings. I hope Todd does not do the loser like he did Thomas County Central and Tucker——-Like out of the top ten! TCC has since fought back. This game will benefit NSWR more than Lowndes. A Lowndes win will clearly establish her supremacy in 1AAAAA.

Here’s a bold prediction:
Dalton will win the AAAA State Championship. After 4 decades + of the Bill Chappell family tree of coaching and only 1 State title, it would only be fitting if they win it in their first year with a young coach not part of the Dalton “tradition.”

Am I the only one thinking of Alabama and UGA right now? Since there are millions of people looking at this game, I would think not.
For the most part, unless you are Warner Robins or Houston County, the NHS team you see is not going to care about what you do on your side of the field. They are going to go out, play their game and see if you can stop it…and in the meantime do their best to stop your game from being productive. They don’t get overhyped about big matchups and history and things of that nature. They just do their best and 35 straight times, their best has been more than enough.
Other than one or two meetings, Lowndes has always had the upper hand going into the matchup, but NHS has come prepared each time, win or lose. I can see a low scoring game happening, but I think that will mainly be from stout defenses and a preferred tendency to run the ball by both teams. There will be plenty of yards to go around and defense will be the name of the game only by score IMO. If the combined score is over 30 I most certainly will be shocked!
Go Eagles!

Certainly, Greg Reid does not have the “big head” he’s been winning ball games for years so this week will be nothing new for him and the Vikings… Lowndes will win and they will win big… NHS will be fearful of Lowndes resulting in a win for the best team in the nation; LOWNDES!!! Gerald Demps, Tyler Hunter, and Greg Reid are all impact players who each play offense as well as the secondary on defense…. Lowndes High football is infaulible.. perfect 15-0

Well here we are. Half way into the 2008 season. We have weekly polls. We even have bloggers predicting play-off brackets. So why not lay it on the line ? Suppose the state title game in each classification was played this coming Friday. Who would be your pick to win it all in each classification? Better yet which 2 teams in each classification would play for the coveted title? (Remember, this is IF the BIG game were played this week). Here are my bets: AAAAA-Newnan vs. Lowndes. Newnan wins. AAAA-Westside-Macon vs. TCC. Westside wins. AAA-Cairo vs. LaGrange. LaGrange wins. AA-Buford vs. Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald wins. A-ECI vs.Wilcox Co. ECI wins. Keep in mind this is not a prediction as to the season’s finale. Just some fodder regarding where everyone is RIGHT now.

TODD, As far as a regular season game goes, this match-up may indeed be the best we have ever seen against 2 nationally ranked Ga teams. But in terms of “programs hooking up at the peak of their greatness”, the hands down answer is 1991 LaGrange vs. Valdosta. Valdosta was ranked #1 nationally and #1 in the state. LaGrange was ranked #8 nationally and #2 in the state. *Check this out, but here goes: This game was the first EVER played by 2 high school teams from the same state who were both NATIONALLY ranked in the Top 10 by both USA Today and ESPN. This was no doubt one of Nick Hyder’s greatest teams. Even in defeat after the most hard hitting defensive battle I have ever seen in GHS football, Coach Hyder and the entire Valdosta nation showed unbelieveable class. It was a moment in GHS sports that I will never forget. Part of that game still lives inside me and plays a big part in my total respect not only for the great city of Valdosta but for all of region 1AAAAA.

I dont know if youd call it a formula, but I definitely have a philosophy that guides me in ranking teams, and I have NEVER made a change in the rankings just to get people talking.
By mid-season, Im ranking teams based on their performance, with some benefit of the doubt given to teams that I just believe are good as long as those teams continue to win or play reasonably well. Tucker got the benefit of the doubt until Friday, the day of reckoning.
Then, Tucker lost 38-0 to Marist, a middling Top 10 team for having lost to St. Pius. No team loses 38-0 to a middling Top 10 team and deserves to remain in any Top 10 unless that team has another victory to suggest 38-0 was a fluke. The only reason anyone would rank Tucker at this point would be because of last season, or because that person has some formula that says a No. 1 canďż˝t CANNOT drop out of the Top 10 by losing to another Top 10 team — no matter what. Thatďż˝s not in my formula.

leechampion, I agree regarding Troup. Most under rated team in the state. Look at what Troup has done without their starting QB: Lost to WACO 3-0. Lost to Baldwin 9-7, and Dunwoody 14-7. Look at the scores that Dunwoody and Baldwin have put up against everyone else. Troup is playing a freshman QB and still keeping things close. They are dangerous. Come play-off time they will make lots of noise.

anyone who tries to argue that tucker should be ranked this week needs a reality check. that doesn’t mean they didn’t just have a bad game and won’t get their act together and be a force in the postseason but to complain about them not being ranked in like complaining that UGA fell out of the top 10. get a clue.
on the other hand i wish that lowndes was closer so i could be at that game this weekend! i’m a gwinnett county fan but that is definitely the game of the regular season. hope the morons on comcast put it on tv but i’m sure we’ll see a couple mediocre local teams from cobb county instead!

re Slalom .1 comments Mceachern played both Valdosta and Lagrange in the regular season in 91 and lost both games. The Mceachern team was loaded with division one talent. The Lagrange team was the mythical national champion. They had to be the fastest defensive team in history and their players were extremely well coached. The Indians took the Grangers to overtime in the semis played at Lagrange. The game was won on a touchdown run by their quarterback Rodney Hudson who has been described by Billy Henderson of Clark Central as the greatest quarterback in Ga. history. As the McEachern team was leaving the stadium I witnessed the Lagrange fans give them a standing ovation. This is my favorite example of good sportsmanship.Their continued success is well deserved.

Something else to consider, is the second seed from region 1 will more than likely have to travel to Camden and face the wildcats.
Coffee, Tift or another team could factor in to this, but the Lowndes-NS game* could* determine who goes and plays the wildcats and who gets to stay home and play a lesser team.
I think Coffee has a great team, and they may end up beating Lowndes and/or Northside.

Well here we are coming up to the game that we’ve all been waiting for Lowndes vs Northside. I know the atmosphere is going to be amazing at Martin Stadium this Friday night. It’s no secret about Lowndes’ game plan. Lowndes will do what they always do and that’s run the ball hard and play even harder defense. I feel that Lowndes is the better team and will be well prepared for this game. Minus the turnovers last week, i think they would of won by at least two more scores against Tift Co. I’m not real big on predicting scores but if i had to make a prediction about this game I’d say Lowndes wins this one by at least two touchdowns.

Ok, let’s start with Northside being 5-1 against Lowdnes which doesn’t include their scrimmage game victory against Lowdnes at LHS in 2005. I attended three Northside games this year and I think thier defense will deliver the victory to Northside. I do not think Lowdnes will be able to block their big and physical defensive front. However, I do think Northside weakness is at quarterback which could be exploited by Lowndes if they stop the run and force Northside to throw the ball (which is a weakness of Northside quarterback). Despite this weakness, Northisde has many other offensive threats to offset this weakness and other offensive threats can generate scores for Northside. I think it will be a Northside victory by one tochdown.

TO: Pete, Well spoken and right on the money. I was at both games. McKeachern had probably their best team. Led by Adam Meadows, the Indians put up a great fight in both games. In the state semi finals the only real difference in the game was Granger QB Rodney Hudson. Same was true for the state title game against Colquitt. But like 1992 Newnan, in 1991 McKeachen was plenty good enough to have won state in most years. This just happened to be a VERY competitive year. I remember the Billy Henderson quote regarding Hudson. Another Billy Henderson quote that I still have in an old newspaper clipping was: ” In all my years of coaching I have never seen any one player who can make such a difference in the outcome of a game.” Even though the Grangers enjoyed a 3 year winning streak against Clarke-Central from 1990-1992 Coach Henderson’s teams ruined LG’s chances in 1985 and 1986 in the state semi finals. What a great coach and a great human being.

The Northside QB has shown improvement every week.
This week he was 10-18, 159 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT.
This included a great 43 yard TD pass to Quin Green.
He is a great Kid/person and it hurts me to see people that are negative about him. He is not Marques Ivory, but he is a good high school QB.

slalom1, I agreed with you that Troup will be a very scary team to play in the high school playoffs if they get in. But just as you are stating they held Dunwoody to 14 points you need to also recognize Dunwoody held them to score 7 points. Dunwoody is one to best teams in AAA this year and they do not worry about the ranking or who beat who they take it one game at a time. A win is a win by 1 point or 100 points. No one remembers how many you lose by they just remember you lost.

Slalom…the reality is Tift is a very physical and good football team. How they lost to Brooks is beyond me and I don’t mean that as a knock on Brooks. They have the best qback we have seen this year. Very accurate and mobile. They have a stout and big defense. A very big linebacker (#90 built more like a defensive end) who gets around pretty good. So I give Tift the credit they deserve. The game was actually closer than the score relates. In fact I feel Lowndes was in some ways outplayed. Tift is one of those teams that always plays Lowndes tough, especially in Tift where the atmosphere is just good 1AAAAA football. Getting ready for the NSHS game we needed this kind of a test. The timing of this game was good for Lowndes and will help them realize they are good but they still have to put out the effort and play their best game or any particular night it could be lights out. Reid had one of those nights you dream about. Tift was about to tie the game after a long pass to the 2 when a good hit jarred the ball loose. Reid picked it up in the end zone and took it about 102 yards. He had another run of around 80 yards that was just simply the kind of run only Reid could have pulled off (amazing!) To seal the game with a few minutes to go in the game and Lowndes on their on 2 yard line (Tift hoping to stop us and get the ball back to have a chance to tie it up) Reid goes off right tackle and clear sailing for another 98 yard run. Reid had 190 yards rushing, an interception, and a 102 fumble return for a touchdown. Lowndes (much out of character) gave up to many long passes against Tift. Something tells me that problem will be corrected this week.

Is Warner Robbins and Northside Warner Robbins the same high school?
Not to be condescending to anyone who posts this but all you have to do is type into your browser the 2 different high schools and you will find results that give you a school who is blue and white with a bit of orange, mascot eagle…and the other is cardinal and white with a mascot demon. I mean just looking at the names alone should tell you they are NOT the same school. The warner robins is put on the end to designate what city that school is located in. Do you confuse Carver Columbus with Columbus? And yes there are 2 high schools with that name. There are at least 3 Northside High schools in GA…Atlanta, Columbus, and Warner Robins.

By HSFan September 28, 2008 11:12 PM | Link to this As much as I despise Lowndes I have to go ahead and say, Lowndes is going to manhandle Northside Warner Robins….NSWR thinks they are ready for Lowndes, but trust me. They aren’t. Lowndes will come out QUICK….much too quick for NSWR…
Manhandle is a bit strong…all I am going to say is Tift Co. Nix used to be a coach who failed to have a team ready to play…but that was 10 years and 2 championships ago. I think most people are afraid of a AAAA team coming up and making serious noise in AAAAA and that is why they say these things. NHS may still lose…but manhandle is a bit strong. Every game is different though.

Vikingsrule……..Good to see that we are in the meat of the season and everyone is finally talking Football instead on nonsense…… First of all ,what some folks may post here on this blog doesn’t speak for the entire NSWR community ….Most everyone here in Warner Robins knows and respects Lowndes program and it’s accomplishments….As for the game , for Lowndes to win they’ll just have to keep on doing what they’ve been doing all along ,Running the ball with a great defense…… For NSWR to win ,Trojan57 (above post) simply nailed it down…We’ll have to sustain a mixture of running and passing to keep the chains moving ,this will have to be Scott’s best game for us to win…Our offense has come around a lot since the Carver game , Scott completed decent passes last fiday which I think will boost his confidence….Yes it was against Hoco, but he looked good overall..If our O-line can make some holes Bacon will get through …… On defense , It’s gonna be hard to keep Reid inside ,but ill bet thats the plan….I still feel that nobody can stop the wing-T like a Nix squad ,…I think he’ll come up with a look unfamiliar to Lowndes on defense to try to shut the running down and make Lowndes pass….If we are to win , the defense will win it for us…..

TO: Dekalb Unknown, I was not dogging Dunwoody at all. In fact just a few minutes ago I did the math on Dunwoody and except for Troup, Dunwoody is averaging 48.75 points per game. My point was to give Troup some “high 5’s” for holding Dunwoody to 14 points while playing a freshman QB. Their starting QB is still out of the line up, but I can only imagine how good they could be with their #1 QB. Dunwoody is for real. I believe that. So, no disrespect. Just making an effort to shed some positive light on Troup who seems to always find a way to be snake bitten. But, you must admit that their defense has been good. Held Dunwoody to 14. Held Baldwin to 9. And WACO to 3.With any offensive threat Troup could easily be 5-0 instead of 2-3. But as they say, ” that is the way the ball bounces”. Dunwoody’s win over Griffin convinced me that they are for real.

Thomasville will make the state playoffs. It might be with a 4-6 record, but they’ll be in. There is a gap between the top two in the region - Fitzgerald and Brooks - then there’s Thomasville and Cook. The other four are a gap behind them. All T’ville has to do is beat those four - Berrien, Early, Albany, and Mitchell.

Say all you want about the Tift/lowndes game concerning the turnovers. But the fact is that Tift came out and just hit you in the mouth harder than you’ve been hit this year, causing you to do nothing but fumble. I was diappointed about the little bwral and Greg Reid showboating. Because tift and lowndes nnormally get along better than that. Looking foward to meeting again this year. So, stop running your mouth and put that “thang” on Northside and keep it in the south. Remember the south, we play about it, not talk about it. Northside will be just like Warner Robins when they can up the first year. But will be just another good team in 1AAAAA. The lil’ “SEC”.

I think it is WR demon fans who keep posting that question about us being the same school, cause we really don’t like being that closely associated with the team on S. Davis Dr.
What makes people think NSWR will have excuses as to why we lost? We already know our QB isn’t a game breaker, we just expect him to do enough to prevent a loss. We are not delirious about winning, nor are we afraid to lose.
The last time NHS played in a #1 vs #2 in the state matchup was the 2000 season. WRHS was ranked #1 and NHS #2 in AAAAA. It was a loss in a rivalry game true…20-23…but the boys gave it their all. This is the 3rd defending state champ that NHS faces this year…I don’t think I need to tell you the result of the previous 2. It is a mistake to think NHS will be unprepared…overcoming the drive to south GA is going to be one of their biggest tasks on the night.

I’ll give them credit because Tift brought a good game our way, but once again our DEFENSE stepped up when it needed to. Lowndes was much out of character with the turnovers but I’m a no excuse person. We won. And in this region you learn to except that and move on. Can’t wait for Friday night. FOR: BIGNATE…
Come on down to “THE BONEYARD” friday night and experience football RAIDER style..
Yes, Etowah is 5-0 this year but let’s look at against WHO…You beat Starr’s Mill / 0-4 this year…you beat Cherokee / 0-4 the year…you beat Woodstock / 1-3 this year…the other 2 wins were against McEachern (which EAST also beat) and your one QUALITY win was against a very good Kennesaw Mtn. team!!!
While EAST has only played 4 games due to our “bye” week, they have wins over a very good Marietta team (at Marietta), against McEachern also, South Cobb, and a state ranked Rome team, who while in 4AAAA, can play with any 5A AAAAA team!!!
EAST has consistently beat the other CHerokee teams year after year, trust me when I tell you that while this is going to be a game to watch (“with a tip of the hat” to the Lowndes-Northside game) one of the 2 best games this friday night!….you will be going back to Cherokee knowing you just experienced playing THE BEST TEAM IN 5A AAAAA, and you saw why the home field for our RAIDERS is called “THE BONEYARD!!”

Last week I said I thought Lowndes would win 17-10. After this past weekend’s games, I’ve changed my mind. Lowndes has been brought back down to Earth. Turnovers are part of the game. When you get hit hard you have a tendency to turn the ball over. Lowndes finally played a team this year who wasn’t intimidated by them. Anyone who thinks Northside will be intimidated by anyone needs professional help. Northside will be ready to play and expect to win this game, as they expect to win every game. I like our chances and predict a 21-10 Northside victory. I feel like the defense is ready to play their best game of the year, and we have the athletes to do it. And to mistermak, Camden is irrelevant and will be until the playoffs.

To: Mistemak, “You can’t wait to hear the excuses NSWR will make when the lose to Lowndes”—-What? Lowndes is rated in every poll to be the class of Georgia. A lost to Lowndes is “SUPPOSE” to happen. Now, on the hand should Lowndes loses—-that will really be big news. The one person on this blogg that is dying for NSWR to lose to Lowndes in CamdenWildcat. Slalom1, Great points about the Troup defense. We here in Dunwoody would be the first to tell everyone just how good they really are. We moved the ball but just could not score the second half because of their defense. Dunwoody has a great offense that can score on every possession however that Troup defense can stop anyone any time also. They are big very physical and athletic. If they get their offense clicking they truly could make a run at the state title. Dunwoody would not like to see them again unless it in the State title game. Much Respect for the Troup defense from the Dunwoody offense.

I don’t usually do this, but Jimmy…What kind of sentence is this and where did you (or did you) go to school to learn this type grammer?????
However I will answer you, in a sentence you and everyone else on this blog can understand…
You obvoiusly have not got a CLUE how the divisional structure works so I’ll help you out a bit…Brookwood & Walton are on the Gwinnett / East side of Atlanta while Canden & Lowdnes are South Ga. teams (way South Ga.)…Our EAST RAIDERS are located in Paulding County / WEST of Atlanta so there is NO REASON they would play ANY of the teams you mention UNTIL the PLAYOFFS…with the exception of HARRISON which we are looking to visiting on OCT. 17th for what is bound to be a GREAT GAME!!!
As for your “astute” comment about Rome being “weak”…LOL!…You have obviously NEVER seen them play!!!…They absolutely belong in AAAAA not AAAA!!!
Also if you will reread postings in other blogs we have gave TCC nothing but compliments for their win in that game…They were ready and beat EAST in virtually EVERY phase of the game. The Lowndes -Northside game should be a great game.I was at the Tift- Lowndes game.Greg Reid is amazing,I have seen him play about ten time and every game the guy makes game changing plays.Lowndes will win a close because of Reid making those plays that playmakers make in big games.Northside will bring it,they are a great team, but Lowndes has to many playmakers.Mr.Reid will be difference,as usual.Watch out for that fullback dive, which the Vikings run better than any team I have ever seen. The you have to watch out for the quaterback Franklin faking a handoff to Demps or Reid and then keeping the ball,if Franklin gets to the edge it is over ,the guy runs a 4.2 forty.Lowndes has just to many playmakers. They are a great team and Northside is also a great team.I am really looking foward to seeing the Lowndes -Coffee game, because the Trojans were are very impressive. The Trojans are great on both sides of the ball. They were the most impressive team that I saw in person last year.

I’m not hearing much on the subject of best reg-season games in history. I’ll be publishing a Take Ten on the subject on Wednesday.
When are you going to rank Treutlen. Undefeated!!!!!!! You have one loss teams in the top ten (stupidity).
Standings tell you who has the best record. Rankings tell you how good the teams really are. I’m not sure that Truetlen is a Top 25 team, much less Top 10. Every team in the Class A Top 10 would be 5-0 with Truetlenďż˝s schedule.
Having said that, what Treutlen and Brett Ingle have accomplished this season is terrific. But every season, it seems that some chronic loser comes out of the gate 5-0 against a weak schedule and cant understand why no ranking. A few turn out like East Paulding and prove legitimate. But most have no idea how good real Top 10 teams are until they face one.
* anyone who tries to argue that tucker should be ranked this week needs a reality check. that doesnt mean they didnt just have a bad game and wont get their act together and be a force in the postseason but to complain about them not being ranked in like complaining that UGA fell out of the top 10. get a clue.*
Couldn’t have said it better myself.
Todd since northside plays lowndes two top three teams ones got to lose WALTON has a bye do you think the number six WALTON will crack the top five.
Good question. It depends on how the Lowndes-Northside game goes. If its close and well-played, theres no reason the loser should fall out of the top five. If its 38-0, the loser might get the Tucker treatment.
Thomasville will make the state playoffs. It might be with a 4-6 record, but theyll be in. There is a gap between the top two in the region - Fitzgerald and Brooks - then theres Thomasville and Cook.
I thought Thomasville would be a little better, but Ill go on record as saying that whoever gets Tville in the first round will not be happy.
TODD, THIS GAME WILL BE A CLASSIC WITH THE TALK OF THE EAGLES MOVING UP FROM AAAA TO AAAAA REGION 1. I THINK BOTH TEAMS MAY BE ABLE TO BEAT A LOT OF COLLEGE TEAMS WITH ALL THAT TALENT.THIS REGION GAME BRINGS MEMORIES OF GAMES BACK IN 70S WHEN GRIFFIN,LAGRANGE,NEWNAN,MORROW,FAYETTE CO. AND RIVERDALE BUTT HEADS WITH EACH OTHER FOR THE REGION TITLE.
Interesting you mention that region from the 1970s. A friend of mine does computer rankings and analyzed scores of all Georgia games back to 1948 (using the GHSFHAs records), and he rated that 1978 region w/ Griffin, LaGrange and Fayette as the toughest in metro Atlanta history.
The last time NHS played in a #1 vs #2 in the state matchup was the 2000 season. WRHS was ranked #1 and NHS #2 in AAAAA. It was a loss in a rivalry game true20-23
So what was the top Warner Robins-Northside game of all-time? 2005? 1975? 1978?
I wonder if AJC will leave the confort of home and come down I-75 to see the clash of Titans in V-townGO VIKES
Save me a seat. And a parking spot.
North at #9ďż˝..Why?ďż˝.North should be at least 4-5. NG has only 1 loss to the #1 ranked team in the USA
I dont think theres any real way to separate teams from No. 4 to No. 9. North lost a ton of starters, and thats why they didnt begin ranked higher. All the teams in front of North have done well every week and dont deserve to be dropped. But theres no real difference between the teams from 4-9 in the Top 10 of Class AAAAA. Somebodys got to be No. 9.
YOUR PAPER ONLY SPOT LIGHTS THE HOME TEAMS WHAT ABOUT THE (EVANS KNIGHTS) WHOSE DEFENSE IS ONLY ALLOWING 7PTS PER GAME.
Not sure what you mean by spotlight. Its true that we focus our coverage more on the metro teams. But your geography doesnt affect your ranking. Evans is a shaky No. 10. Thats shaky because of the mediocre schedule in Class AAAAs weakest region. Every Top 10 would be 4-0 with Evans schedule. That doesnt mean I dont think Evans is a good team, or we wouldnt rank them.
* SARAH That would be the Evans team playing in the weakest region in the state? Todd gave them a number ten; thats probably all the generosity they deserve until they actually play somebody.*
Yep, thats what I was thinking.

The change at Chattooga is bizarre. They replaced a coach who has been as successful as anybody can be at that school with someone who has never coached a day. The new coach was a great player almost 40 years ago at Chattooga but has been in the Marine Corps and other jobs until being hired as AD this year. Chattooga in this day and tine is never going to compete consistently if at all with Calhoun and the Rome area schools.

Dalton may very well go down Friday night. Sequoyah’s offensive line looked terrific Friday night against Rome and the Chiefs defense forced Rome outside. Rome won in large part to great coaching decisions, a defense that forced turnovers and the athleticism of the Rome quarterback who has made a huge difference in the three games he has played.

John I’m truly sorry that you were not impressed with Lowndes at the Tift game. Maybe it was because Tift played very well, as they always do against Lowndes. The Tift/Lowndes game was by far NOT Lowndes best game. Rest assured that what you saw on this past Friday is not what you are going to see this Friday. Mistakes were made, but the mistakes will be used as learning tools.
Win or loose Lowndes will be ready to play.
Now everyone expected NSWR to win against HOCH. The win against Valdost was no suprise either. Valdosta is having some internal problems with some of their players and staff. Don’t be suprised if you see some staffing changes ther soon. Lowndes is neither HOCO or Valdosta.
NSWR will have to play well when they play Tift and Coffee. Bothe of those teams that play well. NSWR has only two sure wins left on the season.
I’m not saying that Lowndes will win, but they will not give up the game that easy.
I just hope that all the kids leave their timpers at home and play a fair game.

Wish we could keep Dalton ‘our little secret’ for a few more weeks.
Those high rankings always come with a huge bump in the road during the playoffs.
Great program, great regular season results, but the Atlanta Braves of high school football - 48 straight winning seasons - 1 title -
The folks will go nuts if they were to find a way to win the big one this year! They’ve been waiting a long time!

The top N v. WR game is the 1989 NHS 7-6 victory. WR was ranked #1 in the nation and the defending State Champs. ESPN was at the game and NHS pulled out a thriller. There were a couple of overtime games in the mid-80’s that were excellent as well.

I know you are fired up about the Hoya game on the 17th yet the Raiders better not be. The teams you play between now then can jump up and bite you in the butt big time and jam up that cannon you are so fond of.

My Eagles will continue to fly high this week. Lowndes needs to prepare for the butt whipping that they are about to receive!!
Also…there have been games between Northside and Warner Robins that have had HUGE implications. In 1999 both teams were undefeated and ranked 1 and 2 in the state.

Well, I see Lowndes cleaned out their jail & sleeper cells and put together a football team this year. Let’s hope they can keep everyone “street legal” until after the playoffs.
Tift Co. should have beaten the “one trick” pony Y-ikes. Shut down Reid (if you can) and Lowndes goes away wimpering. I was at Tifton last Friday and the turnovers mattered but LHS (to their credit) prevailed.
And on an aesthetic note, those Lowndes cheerleaders look remarkably like their bovine sisters at Valdosta (wow, what cud-chewers!!). Did they hold tryouts at these schools or did they pick up the cast-offs from the stock show and rodeo.
NSWR knock off LHS in an upset.

NSWR has never defeated Lowndes on artifical turf. By the way, Lowndes now has artificial turf. Now teams can’t whine like Brookwood did last year when it rained. NSWR may beat us, and may indeed be the best team in the Southeast, but we won’t lay down and give it to’em. They will have to bring their A game to beat us! Hopefully our starting Offensive RT (6-5, 280 lbs) will be back this week after missing the last 2 and 3/4 ballgames with a leg injury.

NHS 17 - Lowndes 14 (Northside’s defense will score once)

Northside 24, Lowndes 14. This game will not be close. Northside has a SIGNIFICANT coaching advantage (in Conrad Nix) and everyone in Valdosta knows it.
Todd has asked for who we take and why. I take Northside 24-14 for three overriding reasons.
Northside owns Lowndes County and there is no fear factor. At 5-1, the Eagles have a decided series advantage. Northside has played in HUGE games against nationally ranked opponents. Both Northside and Warner Robins were ranked in a recent showdown for the City Championship. This is life at Northside. This is normalcy for every player who has worn the Eagle uniform. Big games are life at Northside. In recent years, Valdosta has been terrible (the hapless Wildcats even lost to a down Warner Robins team last Friday). It has been a long time since Lowndes faced a big game against an opponent that is not impressed. Now, Northside comes to town. The Vikings have failed to even show up in HUGE games against the Eagles. This game will be no different Friday night at Martin Stadium (Vikings fans get there early. Warner Robins fans have been known to sell out opponents stadiums, ask Statesboro). In Lowndes’ one victory against Northside, the Eagles led 28-3 at halftime.
Northside’s defense sports two the the nation’s and two of Georgia’s best players in DT Abry Jones (the top defensive tackle in America) and LB Eric Fields (one of the top 10 linebackers in the country). Defense wins championships. Defense will lift Northside to victory over Lowndes. Northside defensive coordinator Kevin Kinsler is and has been one of Georgia’s best assistants. Kinsler is a household name in Warner Robins and he ALWAYS gets it done in big games. Proof of his brillance: Tucker was DOMINATING Northside in the Georgia Dome last season as the Tigers put up 28 in the first half. Tucker did not pass the 50 yard line in the 2nd half. Kinsler’s defense ALWAYS stands tall!
Joe Scott (11-0 as a starter) and Xavier Bacon are BIG game players. Bacon is clearly one of Georgia’s best running backs. Scott, one of the most heavily criticized QBs in Georgia, has withstood constant criticism for not living up to the former state player of the year. Is remains consistent and improves every week. Scott has continued to improve and his toughness is exactly what is needed to lead Northside to victory in big games.
Finally, is there anyone better than Conrad Nix in the Peach State. He is selfless and only seeks victory. He has led Northside to 35 straight victories and snatched victory from the jaws of defeat. It will not be pretty for Vikings fans on Friday night. Northside, 24, Lowndes County 14 (7 of those Lowndes points coming in the Nix, the Merciful style, late in the 4th quarter)

First, Lowndes wins this game. But I would not be surprised if it went the other way around. Second, I think Todd’s poll title last week makes more sense this week. Region1 as a whole may not be all it is hyped to be. Valdosta dropped to Warner Robins——Demons? Same Demons Grayson crushed 30 to 0? Lastly, do not snub Parkview yet. Have you seen the points they have been racking up, 172 points in 5 games. They have 2 Division 1 prospects in the backfield, which Grayson held to 33 yards by the way. Game score between Grayson and Parkview does not reflect the game—-look at stats for game. Grayson kneeled 3 times at the end of game on Parviews 10 to run out clock than to punch it in again. Also, Grayson was without 2 of their fullbacks due to injury and still ran 327 yards. Brookwood is not as strong as Parkview. Look at Brookwood’s game against Berkmar. Parview will finish 2nd in region 8. Grayson, which I believe, has just secured the region. Parkview will dismantle a few teams in the playoffs. Brookwood is not as good but will win some too. Can never count them out. Region 8 is better than originally thought. Grayson deserves top 10 ranking, maybe 5 is high but they should be in the mix between 5 and 8.

AVikingfan, it looks like one game against a traditional Georgia power (Tift County) has created a shift in your message. Before you struggled so mightily against Tift County, you were beating your chest over beating some bad Atlanta teams and Colquitt County. Did you actually believe that programs like Tift County, Warner Robins, and Northside-Warner Robins were just going to roll over for you as Valdosta has? It will not go down like that, my friend. I promise you, Northside is ready. These kinds of hyped games are commonplace in these parts. All of Valdosta will see what it means to have NORTHSIDE PRIDE!
Northside’s defense is the difference, AVikingfan. No matter what happens, do not go into a protective custody program as your brothers from Valdosta have. Valdosta HS was screaming about dropping out of the top 10. Back-to-back games against Warner Robins high schools have created a sense of reality at Valdosta HS. Now, all of Georgia knows what has become of Valdosta football.
Reality is coming to Martin Stadium on Friday night! Reality will be dressed in blue and white, with some orange trim. GO EAGLES!

TJ, what makes you think that Valdosta even reaches the state playoffs in Region 1-AAAAA. Are you honestly going to say that Valdosta does not coast to the region crown or at the very least a top two finish in most other AAAAA regions? I will concede the point and give it to you and say that the Gwinnett County region is the exception, but that is it.
I honestly believe that Valdosta, the team that I honestly felt quit against Northside, would easily reach the state playoffs in any other region and finish top two in every region except the Gwinnett County Region 8-AAAAA.

Sgt Chris, the Northside quarterback during the shocking 7-6 win against the Warner Robins Demons was junior Rayfield Boyd. Warner Robins was ranked #1 in the nation and the state. They were the defending 1988 state champs (who ran over Brookwood for another state title in 88), was a junior named Rayfield Boyd. He went to Central Florda.
Rodney Hudson was already at Georgia Southern in 1989. He was not Northside’s QB in 1989. Boyd did not start the season. It was a senior named Tyrone McKenzie, who was injured during the season.
Warner Robins had the top rated QB in the nation and two of the top junior RBs in the nation along with one of the state’s top receivers. Northside still prevailed. Those Eagles are far from the beasts that take the field in the blue and white.
Most Northside fans consider it the best NHS vs. WRHS game. No one expected it to be close. Warner Robins’ was MUCH better and HAMMERED Northside the next week (20-6) and ran up the score against us the following year (41-6). The Demons went on to win the next 7 straight games after Northside’s 1989 upset.

To EagleNastionRising: You didn’t hear me beating my chest my friend. There are several VikingFans, but only ONE AVIKINGFAN. I’m sure Conrad Nix is a good coach, and also Kevin Kensler. Let’s see, Conrad has won two State Championship games and lost two. Whereas Randy McPherson at Lowndes has won 4 out of 4. The Lowndes Defensive Coordinator Randy Hill was picked State Assistant Coach of the year last year by the Georgia High School Coaches Association. So we have some good coaches also. But talk about “beating your chest” I distinctly remember other NSWR fans telling you to “cool it” in past blogs, as your rants do tend to give the fine folks at NSWR a bad name.
Whatever the outcome, I think this game will mark the first of what surely will be many good games between these two AAAAA teams in the coming years. Who knows, we could meet again this year in the State Title game in the dome.

Joe Joe, the Northside schedule is certainly tougher to this point than what your team has faced. Windsor Forest?? Are you kidding me?? Houston Co. is 2-0 against your bush league region. You remind me of a little kid screaming for attention, saying “look at me!!” Your boys will get their chance to be noticed in the playoffs. Until then, sit back and watch some real football on the I-75 corridor. And be prepared to fall to number 3 in the polls next week. After Northside beats Lowndes, Todd will most likely only drop them one notch, and Northside will move to number one (where they belong).

The people of Northside are represented by the students who take the field every Friday. Some of you guys on this blog take yourselves to seriously.
No matter how you cut it, 1-5 versus Northside is 1-5 versus Northside. This is not the first undefeated, wait until you guys play Lowndes County team that Northside has faced.
AVikingfan, can you even imagine how many times Northside has faced an undefeated defending state champion, nationally ranked opponent. That outfit has been worn by our cross-town Warner Robins Demons many, many times.
Unlike Coach Nix and McPherson, former Warner Robins’ coach (current Westside coach) Robert Davis brings National Titles to the table. There is no fear factor, partner. Northside will be represented by the fine men wearing the white and blue on Friday.

Sgt. Chris, the QB at Northside prior to McKenzie and Boyd was Rodney Hudson. He had some CLASSIC games against Warner Robins.
At Northside, we know who Hudson is. He led one of the most horrid beatings ever giving to a Northside team. I heard that Hudson went to Mississippi State. What happened to him? He is one of the best QBs that I had ever seen and we saw some good ones during those years with some All-Americans when we played Warner Robins and Evans (Augusta).
Trust me, Sgt. Chris. That 1989 Warner Robins team rolled over. It was a 3rd National Championship (in 10 years) or bust mentality at WRHS that season. That team was broken after losing to Northside.

SGT CHRIS, Always enjoy reading your posts as well as reflecting back on some great Granger memories. The 1989 Granger team might deserve the award for “most improved” team from the beginning to season’s end. If you remember Hudson was a soph. Also, during “2 a days” one of the star players for LG collapsed and died. I believe his name was Marlon Jackson. This ‘89 Granger team was not all that great during the regular season but played like a team on a mission.Lost to Griffin 35-16. Lost to Newnan 27-14 and to Morrow 36-29. Barely made it to the region play-offs. But, WOW. What a turn around. Avenged the loss to Griffin 26-3. Then put one on Morrow 48-3 for the region title. The following week the Grangers upset Warner Robins 16-10. Then finally lost to Valdosta 24-13 in the state semi-finals. As for the 1991 state title game against Colquitt Co, you are right. Russ Davidson caught what turned out to be the game winning catch. THE ONLY CATCH OF HIS HIGH SCHOOL CAREER! I was in Moultrie that night and the city of Moultrie looked like a ghost town except for the area around Tharpe Stadium. I was with a group of about 8 people and had one extra ticket. Hate to admit this, but I scalped the ticket for 50 bucks. LOL! It was an electric night. If you remember LG was ranked #2 nationally going into the game. But Eisenhower HS of California who was ranked #1 had just been beaten 35-0. As we were about to enter the stadium we were offered t-shirts saying “LaGrange High School 1991 State and NATIONAL CHAMPIONS”. 10 bucks a piece. Did not buy one. Sounded like a curse to me. And, it almost was. But in the end the magic of the 1991 season prevailed.

To SGT Chris it look like you became a believer in Newnan last week. Any fan that see this team play will become a believer. Todd comment that 4-9 is basically the same shows he is not a true believer yet but that is what the playoff is for. As far as the Lowndes vs NSWR game it will be a shame if CSS doesn’t show this game. If they want ratings this will be the game everyone in the South is wanting to see. What I have seen from the two teams and what I hear from sources this should be a great defensive game. I think NSWR taking a lead into the fourth quarter 10-7 but Reid who I think is the best two way player in the state will make a play on the offensive side of the ball and Lowndes will win 14-10. I have seen Reid play live in person and many times on tape and he is the real deal. Lowndes will win this game but I also think Coffee will challenge both teams this year for the Region Championship.

TO: Swine The Mad, What a great name!LOL! Most everybody here is talking AAAAA football and for good reason. The NSWR vs. Lowndes game is one of the biggest and most unpredictable in recent GHS football history. But I am glad you brought up AA football. This classification is turning out to be quite exciting in 2008 as well as unpredictable. Obviously to most persons it looks like Buford AGAIN. But the way I see it, there might be as many as 10-12 teams who have a shot. Starting with Brooks Co. Embarrassed 1AAAAA Tift who in turn played Lowndes a very competitive game. I also like Fitzgerald. Henry Co struggled against Central-Macon, who also has a pretty good team. I don’t see the private schools being much of a factor come play-off time. Charlton Co can never be ruled out. Do not know much about Jefferson Co. But Callaway is the sleeper in AA this year. Keep them on the radar. They will finish the regular season 9-1 with their only loss coming to Troup 15-7. (That was with Troup’s starting QB in the game.)

Have they played their worst game yet?” My answer would be “No. No. Maybe.” Same questions for NSWR. Answer: No. Maybe. No. Looks like a defensive slugfest with Lowndes winning, but not by much. Probably Drock08 has it about right. Lowndes wins 14-10.

I love the groups of people that spend so much time crying about ENR. The fact remains that I simply give the statistical facts.
Yo, don’t cry to me that the series record with the Vikings and the Eagles is Northside 5, Lowndes County 1. It is easy to blame ENR for the fact that Northside has beaten Lowndes County 5 out of 6 games.

Slalom1 did a good job but some inaccuracies on LG and links with NSWR and WRHS.
In 1989, Rodney Hudson was indeed a sophomore QB for us and did a terrific job but LG was up-and-down all season and fortunate to earn a postseason region playoff berth. Had to beat Fayette Co. in OT just to get in.
LG avenged a loss to Griffin in the regular season with a 26-9 win at the Bears Den — GROWL — and ended what was then a very bitter four-game losing streak to Morrow and Andre Hastings at Tara Stadium for the region championship. LG took out all the frustration on Morrow in a 48-9 pummeling and could have been worse. It was Hastings’ worst-ever showing in his final HS game. Also would be the last game for then LG sophomore LB sensation Rico Baker, who planted Peady Hardy (Morrow RB) into the Tara turf the whole night in the 48-9 scorching. Baker tragically died in an auto accident shortly before the ‘90 season. Baker might very well have been LG’s top prospect in ‘91, not Hudson, Harris, others.
Also in ‘89, LG went on the road and defeated a very good Warner Robins team 16-10 in a terrific game and great win for a sophomore-dominated LG team. LG led Valdosta 13-12 in the fourth, fell behind 18-13 in the five-inch deep mud at Callaway Stadium. The final play of the game, Hudson scrambled, turned and was belted on the side by a V LB, a mid-air fumble ensued and returned 40-45 yards for the V TD on the final play of the game for the 24-13 final score. Hudson had two players open on the play — Buster Owens and Mike Berry — but was hit and that was it. Give credit to V and great defense. LG got even with V in ‘91 with a truly amazing defensive team and the V-Cats were terrific on defense, too. LG-V in ‘91 was as good a high school game as you’ll ever see.
LG hosted Northside at Callaway in 1990 and defeated the Eagles, 21-3. We returned the trip back to Warner Robins in 1991. The key play of the 1991 title-winning season came against NS, too. NS went the length of the field on LG’s rock-ribbed defense, shoved it down our throats. But after a terrific four-down goal-line stand by LG’s defense, it was over and all Grangers. Hudson led LG on a 99-yard scoring drive for the first points of the game in a 38-0 blowout win.
It was a different time for us at LG in ‘91 and now we’re in 3A and it’s 2008, we don’t live in the past but respect it and move on…I catch hell from ‘91 LG guys saying LG’s ‘04 defense was better — always a nice argument to have among state championship teams!
LG would like another ring in ‘08 and we’ll see how we do. Also wish our friends and long-time foes to the North in the Newnan Cougars good luck in bringing home the ring as well in December. LG and N people a lot of mutual respect, it’s been a terrific rivalry for decades. Still miss the LG-Griffin battles of the 80s — as good a series as any in Ga. football.

Grayson had two of their best fullbacks out Friday, and three of their linebacker have casts on their hands, so umm, i think coach conn did great without them. i know of one they are saving for Brookwood. Dont knock Parkview though, they have a strong team, i believe they are better then Brookwood, but glad Conn saved the best for that game, if Grayson wins, it will be a first for them. Basing this on a 13-6 win over Berkmar?

but all i know is lowndes is the truth and what i have seen northside is good. so this game will be good but i give it to lowndes only because of defense. and number 24.
and camden might do not be able to win region if all the starters keep gettin caught doing stupid things. last week 8 starters got suspended for the first quarter of the game for wrestling and playing around in the locker room, this past weekend 7 starters got caught at a party with alcohol by the cops, and they will be suspended for the next two games. alright all jokes aside even with camdens JV the would still win region. ha

To the posters who continue to talk trash about Northside playing the all-powerful. I will remind you that Northside has been here many time before. Whether it has been facing some GREAT Warner Robins teams, Griffin, & LaGrange, Northside has stared down some of Georgia’s best programs. Lowndes is just another big game. We are used to them.
Yo and slalom1 (the poster who actually believed that Valdosta could compete with Northside) do you guys remember the 1997 Lowndes County team that face Northside. That Lowndes County team was undefeated and beat Valdosta. Northside had a 7-3 regular season. Northside 13, Lowndes County 10. 1997’s 9-4 was a down year for Northside. We still beat Lowndes County
Remember the Vikings of 1997: http://www.lowndesfootball.com/history/year/1997.htm

So what was the top Warner Robins-Northside game of all-time? 2005? 1975? 1978?
The 1989 WR game definitely takes the cake. My favorite WR NHS game is 1996…33-14. Once again no one gave the eagles a chance in this one…never underestimate the power of an eagle. That game was the turning point in my mind for this program…it ended a streak of losses to the Demons.
But the top WR vs NHS game…44-0 in 1998. I was at that one!
Be wary Vikings fans. Your greatest advantage is distance between schools. Once the boys hit the field, all bets are off.
CSS is not carrying the game…nor is ESPN that I know of. You can find a webcast of the game with your local CBS affiliate and if you have CBS college sports network, then you will get the live broadcast. CSS is too lazy to send someone from Tally to this game…but they can travel to Camden and watch them beat an unimpressive FL high school team. I truly don’t understand how ESPN misses the chance to broadcast this game. None of the other matchups they have broadcast held so much national importance!

Yo, Slalom, and everyone else on the Vikings bandwagon, let’s not forget the great Lowndes team of 1998.
Those Vikings went undefeated until Valdosta hammered them the last game of the season. Lowndes County went to the state playoffs and OF COURSE beat Camden County. Then the Vikings ran into Northside.

Grantham, what are you talking about? I am 100% certain that the quarterback prior to Rayfield Boyd was Tyrone McKenzie. McKenzie started the 1989 season at QB in the first game against Butler (Augusta). The previous season…actually the previous 2 seasons the QB was #14 Hudson, who led a furious comeback which almost ended Warner Robins’ state championship season in 1988. As a junior, Hudson did what very few Northside QBs have ever done. He led Northside to two wins against Warner Robins in the same season (1987).
Hudson (his first name may not have been Rodney…I am not sure the guy’s first name) led Northside down the field. Northside had a 4th and goal and he threw it to a receiver named Ferguson. The ball hit Ferguson directly in the chest and he dropped the game winning pass.
Northside’s season ended. Hudson went to Georgia Southern. Warner Robins continued on to the state playoffs and won the state championship.
Mark Ivory graduate from Northside in 1988, which means that his last football season was 1987. Then Ivory went to Valdosta State. Rayfield Boyd graduated in 1991. Grantham, you have your QBs confused. Hudson was a heck of a quarterback for Northside. Boyd was a backup to McKenzie prior to McKenzie’s injury in 1989.

Grantham, the QBs for the 1987 and 1988 Northside team is Don Hudson. He was a 2 year starter for Northside HS. Don Hudson followed Mark Ivory and led Northside to a City Championship and was a very good player. He went to be a 3 year letterwinner at Georgia Southern.

JoeJoe, you know exactly what I mean by of course. Northside does not lose to the Camden’s of the world. This is a conversation about Georgia heavyweights (Northside and Lowndes). We all know what Camden has done time and time again against the top programs in Georgia.
Camden is a combined 5-15-1 versus the top tier teams in Region 1AAAAA. That is pretty sad for a program beating its chest.
vs. Northside 0-2 vs. Warner Robins 1-3 vs. Lowndes County 1-3 vs. Valdosta 3-7-1
Seriously Camden posters, let’s hold our tongue until we actually beat someone. This is an adult conversation with powers in this state. We are not talking about programs that feast upon AAA competition.

Granger80, Great post. and, you are right. I missed the play-off scores in 1989 between LG vs. Griffin and LG vs. Morrow. From my jaded memory I said 26-3 and 48-3. Your scores were right. It was 26-9 and 48-9 My bad. You also brought up Rico Baker. Again, you were right. A VERY tragic loss. Most of the time I rely on my memory rather than doing diligence and just looking up the facts. Like you I miss some of the great rivalries of the 80’s and 90’s. As for 2004 LG vs. 1991 LG, 2 great teams from 2 different generations. No one will ever know who was the best. But I will quote the AJC in describing Hudson upon being awarded “Player Of the Year”: “When the game is on the line, NO ONE is better than Hudson”. That was true then. I believe that is still true today. Did I miss anything else Coach? Think I know who you are. 1980 rings a bell. You have done one hell of a great job.

Mays might be the fourth-best team in the region, but I rank teams based on their performance. Mays beat Whitewater, right? And you still think I should rank Mays ahead of Whitewater?
Also consider these scores:
Mays 37, Carver 19
St. Pius 33, Carver 32
St. Pius 14, Marist 9
Marist 38, Tucker 0
It’s not for me to decide if any of those scores were flukes. If I’m objective, I can only conclude that Mays has performed pretty well this season, especially when you throw in a victory over Whitewater.

REEZE, Look at it this way: Maybe I am the good luck charm for 2008 NSWR?! LOL! Sure was hoping that no one noticed my prediction of the Valdosta win over NSWR. Must admit that my batting average in 2008 is not very respectable. On the other hand, at the half way point this might be the whackiest season I can remember. EVERY classification has question marks along with underdogs who are capable of pulling off an upset. As I have previously stated I believe that the BIG game will come down to a defensive battle. BEST defense wins. And, GOD bless Joe Thomas.

hOMET, I will agree that if Harrison and east are both undefeated when we face on the 17th, the winner would have a good shot at the region championship. That is a big “IF” I hope our team does’nt take any team for granted. I also think Easts next four games may be tougher than ours, but we will see. All joking aside, I don’t see you doing better than 2-2, but East may prove me wrong you have already once this year over mc. I have seen them twice this year, and have not been impressed, but i still thought they would beat east . We have had let downs the past two years, and lost to teams we should not have. Slalom the answer for Lowndes would be No, No, Probably (Peachtree Ridge) Lowndes is notorious for improving as the year goes along since McP showed up to coach. Usually come playoff time is when Lowndes usually starts playing its best ball. Last years state champs were the biggest example of that. An average team to start the year (especially given they were so young) to, some would argue, the best team in the state come championship game time. If not the best in that 15th week at least they looked like it.

I think Camden is a powerhouse, but they have not performed well against 1AAAAA teams. The actual stats since 1991 (the year Camden became a consistently winning program): 3-5 vs. Lowndes, 0-2 vs. NHS, 1-3 vs. WRHS, 3-5 vs. Valdosta (Camden winning the last three), 0-2 vs. Coffee, 1-0 vs. Tift, 3-3 vs. Colquitt, for a combined record of 11-20. Considering Camden has lost only 43 games since 1991, and nearly half are against 1AAAAA opponents, I’d say Camden struggles against those teams. Check www.ghsfa.org for the stats.

joejoe, you can’t “guarantee” anybody anything. There is absolutely no one who knows for sure what is going to happen Friday night at Lowndes. I expect it to be a close game, with whoever takes advantage of opportunities winning. I just hope that the officials (wherever they are from) will let the players on the field decide the outcome. He certainly proved himself for about six games last year after Ivory got hurt, including the first three rounds of the playoffs. We also have a second QB who gets a lot of playing time.. Todd: Mays would never beat St.Pius ,Marist or Tucker, so that equation don’t compute.
Doesn’t matter. My rankings aren’t designed to predict what WOULD happen. They are designed to reflect what HAS happened. And what HAS happened is that Carver played SPX even, and Mays decisively beat Carver. And SPX beat Marist, which killed Tucker. Comparative results may not tell you how good teams really are, but they are essential in telling you how teams have performed, which is what my rankings attempt to do.
Would Mays beat Tucker or Marist? That’s not important. Were the Giants the best team in the NFL last season? It doesn’t matter. What’s important is that the NYG won the Super Bowl, and that Mays (which beat Marist last season, for what it’s worth) has performed better overall than all those teams in 2008, in my opinion.
And where are these Mays fans to defend themselves? They were everywhere in 2007 when they were unranked, and they gave me an inbox full when I wrote about Darren Myles Jr. the day after their victory over Carver.
My question remains unanswered. Is the NSHS QB very mobile as in able to scramble for his life if need be? Is he a good running QB?
No.

Now that I have my question answered I’m now very confidant with Lowndes. Lowndes 2 defensive ends will be all over Scott and if he doen’t get rid of the ball “very” fast it is over. Game, Set, match…..Lowndes. Scott will be under more pressure in this game than he ever thought was possible and no Ivory to bail him out in the second half.

Todd we are here, most people don’t know Mays returned only 3 starters:Desmond Walker,Myer Nolan and the most underrated QB in state Bobby Anthony. That means they replaced the whole offensive/Defensive line. The defense rtn 1 starter Myer Nolan, big time player at safety. Winston Broderick has step up for breakout season.Tim Wynn offensive tackle UGA or GT need look at him.Mays will not run up a score!! They play frosh & Soph to get experience. So don’t let the Alexander 12-7 score fool you,’07 Mays 13-0 over North Springs. Most (90%) of Mays football players do it on the field and in the classroom.Looking at Whitewater,Mays was down in that game and came back to when. The only reason they lost to a subpar* East Paulding”always reference *MAYS when talking about their success in “07.” 5 offensive players were out.(we beat your #48 Mays team 21-3). One game at a time,Tri-cities up next. Then homecoming against Bannanker, once again Mays don’t pick cupcake for homecoming(Marist ,Tucker,St.Pius,Washington) what teams in state make picks like that for homecoming. I would like to see Sandy Creek V/S Mays on Nov.7th @ Lakewood. Rio Johnson V/S Bobby Anthony. Now is Mays a #2,Ly I would say NO,This year Yes!Quad A is not as strong.Should Mays be working to get better? Most Definitely. The defense know where they’re lacking,Offensive know they need to make more plays for Dec.13 date.THe leader of team need to step up. The Coach need to coach and not worry about that 1 year you here next year you gone. Don’t Coach with fear!!

todd and everybody else. You can not be realistic when you start using stats that go back almsot 20 years in high school football. If you look at Camden record this decade it is much better than the 90’s. The cats have had the same coach this decade so look at his record. He has lost a total of 8 games since 01. That speaks for itself. We all know these things run in cycles so there is no way you can be realistic and go back that far. I think the beef is with NSWR talking so much trash when they are so new th AAAAA. And for Alan you are either 12 years old or just plain stupid. Camden has never been irrelevant. And you better hope you don’t make it beyond the 2nd round because you will find out what speed will do to you!!!

NSWR is not new to AAAAA. They were in AAAAA when it became a classification in 2000, and were in AAAA (the highest classification) before. Northside has spent only four years in a lower classification, and went to three state title games, winning two of them. In the four years they spent in AAAAA previously, they won two region titles, and made the state championship game, with a combined, four-year record of 44-7. Lowndes and Camden may be better than Northside this year, but this school has more than proven itself as a AAAAA competitor.

NSWR, quit living in the past. You have not faced Randy Mc’s vikes yet and they are far superior to any Lowndes team before them. Also better get to them early. If Greg Reid gets on a roll this could get ugly.

I don’t know where these people get off predicting blowouts…you have to go back 12 years to find a NHS team who loses by 20+ points to a team from GA…1996 vs Peach County 21-0 loss. And Peach was no sluff back then. R E Lee(AL) beat NHS 22-3 the year after that in 1997. So if you Camden fans want respect for what you do THIS decade…and Lowndes fans too…maybe you should try and respect some of what our program has accomplished too. I love how these posters trash NHS for being a former AAAA team and then blame us for reminding you football is football. Just like we beat Valdosta this year in spite of history, and old records are old records, take some of that into consideration when you make such BOLD statements regarding the legitimacy of NHS in AAAAA.
Just like NHS has never faced a McPherson coached team…McPherson has never faced this NHS team, it cuts both ways people…SEE YOU FRIDAY!

I really don’t know if Camden is any better than you fellas, but I do know they would compete well with any one. the last time camden got blown out was to Lowndes the year after we won state and that is what happens when you get too cocky! We were beat before we walked in the dome. Ya’ll got a game of games this week so if I were you I would refrain from all the talk because it just might come back to haunt you!! Go Vikings!! trublu It is hard to respect a program that talks so much trash. We have earned our respect on the field and so has Lowndes!! Personally I don’t care if we get respect because each time a team heads home from Camden, trust me they have just learned all about respect!! If you want respect you need to beat someone else in 1AAAAA besides Valdosta and Houston Co. Your test is coming!!

In case you forgot…this is NOT the first time this program is AAAAA. Are you serious? Since AAAAA has existed, NHS has played in the big games every year they have been a member. In addition to that, one can make the argument that the success Lowndes and Camden face is because WRHS was bad, HoCo was bad, and NHS wasn’t in AAAAA. Trash talk? you guys have some nerve. I see more trash from Camden people and Lowndes people than from NHS people on here. One poster does not the entire fan base make! And even at that, ENR is justified cause NHS has, under Nix, ALWAYS been a team to reckon with. Go back and read how many NHS people have predicted a 30 something win for NHS…then go back and read what the Vikings faithful predict about NHS getting blownout. What posts have you been reading?
Notable teams we have beaten in AAAAA
Lowndes, Baldwin, Griffin, SW Dekalb, Coffee Co. Collins Hill, Dacula, Starrs’s Mill, Effingham Co., Bradwell Institute. IN addition to that, the years that they were AAAAA and we were AAAA, we beat WRHS and HoCo, who I believe represented 1-AAAAA in the playoffs correct? HoCo in 2006 won at Lowndes, and WRHS won at Lowndes in 2006 as well. But I guess those were games that McPherson missed? Those were years that those 2 programs were good, and Lowndes wasn’t bad those years either. And oh by the way…that was WRHS FIRST year back in AAAAA, AFTER winning a championship in AAAA…STFU about teams coming from AAAA and getting embarrased in AAAAA
I do have one retraction though…Newnan beat NHS 24-0 in the 2003 playoffs.

Anybody predicting a Blowout on Friday For either Lowndes or Northside are just being idiotic. Living in South Georgia the last ten years…has allowed me to watch quite a bit of quality Friday night football games. Anyone who knows Region 1AAAAA football knows you have to play defense frst. Seeing both these teams in action how can anyone expect to see more than 30 points total? Welcome to region 1AAAAA Northside, no doubt you can compete in this region Both Teams have quality on BOTH sides of the ball, both teams are physical, but I do have to give the edge to Lowndes on speed. They will give up a big play or two, so the Eagles have to take advantage of it when they have the chance. Neither team is going to be able to roll up huge yardage against the other, so I see the edge going to the team that makes the least mistakes and makes the plays on special teams. With that being said…I’ll have to give the edge to the Vikings. Look for a good quality PHYSICAL game on Friday and pray for the safety of all players…….Prediction….14-10 Vikings with the Difference being a long return by #24…to YO and Vikings Rule…NO…NSWR is not very mobile..I would look for the coach to run alot of bootlegs just to compensate for the speed of the Vikings D-Line and backers.

Big Fan of 4A Tucker-Marist went down pretty much as we feared. Marist marched the field, Tucker went 3 and out on their first four possessions; there may have been one screen pass among all the running plays but it didn’t gain much. There were no first downs. Perhaps the coaches ignored the fact that Marist had shut down Chamblee’s ground attack two weeks earlier. Perhaps the Tucker coaches had forgotten the offensive line problems that surfaced in the Stephenson scrimmage and repeated in the second halves against Brunswick and Miller Grove. When Tucker took the ball down 17-0 to start the second half against Marist, their adjustment was to throw the ball 50 yards downfield. At 24-0, the coaches finally sent in some intermediate pass plays but the injury to Chris Beck put an end to any threat Tucker might have mounted. The backup QB is completely inadequate and the game got totally out of control after that. Taking Deion Roberson out makes Tucker’s defense nothing special; Devon Scott’s speed gives the offense an option other than Davis and Calhoun. If Beck misses several weeks, Tucker has no chance to establish a passing attack. They’ll lose to Chamblee and SW Dekalb, take a 4 seed into the playoffs against either Mays or Sandy Creek. With everyone healthy they have a chance. Tucker is not a bad team, probably top ten with all its parts, but there’s just no depth.

Say what you say… Hate to love them or love to hate them, Mays will win state in 2008. Guaranteed! You heard it from Walker first, when he told all of you during the preseason not to sleep on Mays. I am glad to see that Todd finally got on the bandwagon as I use to question his objectivity. However, it really did not take him long to recognize a true winner. Now the rest of you might as well get on the bandwagon too, because like it or not, Mays is your next AAAA state champion. Learn to love it or continue to love to hate it, it really doesn’t matter.

Fair question. I would have no problem with anybody who would rank Marist in the top three. But I don’t generally drop undefeated teams in favor of one-loss teams. Mays, Statesboro, Sandy Creek and Dalton are undefeated, each with a quality win. Are they better than Marist? Not all of them, I’m sure.
But I still felt I needed to account for the loss to SPX. And don’t forget that SPX’s No. 3 ranking is in AAA.

There are plenty of postings about the way Lowndes played down to Tift County this past Friday night. The entire game was a defensive battle and the game was won by one person, Greg Reid. If Lowndes did not have him, the same plays would not have been made. Saying that, Reid should not have antagonized the Tift County players on his 99-yard run with about 1:20 left in the game. It makes Lowndes look just like what everyone on here thinks, we think and play like big shots and it is only a matter of time before the kings fall. I would also like to point out the lack of class by both sides for the reaction after the attack on Reid. Tift County’s bench cleared and half of Lowndes’ bench ran down to jump in. We had some very awful Lowndes fans yelling and screaming on the visitor’s side, and there were quite a few Tift County players and fans acting the same. The one that sticks out the most is #55 from Tift County standing in the middle of the field shouting obscenities at the visitor’s side. I was glad to see coach Walls and McPherson come to an agreement with the refs and NOT calling the game and not suspending anyone for their actions.
Conversely, I think the reality check the Tift County game gave Lowndes will do wonders for our game against Northside. Northside will be ready for Lowndes and we can only hope Lowndes will be ready for them. No turnovers and no penalties for Lowndes. For those that think our “plowboy” refs are going to give the game to us, tell me who they are so we can figure them out. I’m sure we had them in Tift County when Robert Anderson was clearly down before the ball popped away and Tift County recovered. It just seems funny how the visitor’s side sees things.
Honestly, do you we all think Lowndes, a three out of four year state champion is scared of Northside? We welcome you to our stadium and your challenge. It will be a good one. No prediction, it will be that close.

in terms of “programs hooking up at the peak of their greatness”, the hands down answer is 1991 LaGrange vs. Valdosta. Valdosta was ranked #1 nationally and #1 in the state. LaGrange was ranked #8 nationally and #2 in the state.
Good history, Slalom, but I meant to limit the debate to regular-season games. I don’t think any reg-season games since 1996, when four teams per region started making the state playoffs, can compare to some of the best playoff games.
Scott Sickler (LaGrange historian) told me he thought the LaGrange-Shaw game in 2004 might be the most highly anticipated regular-season game LaGrange has played. I thought it might’ve been 1991 Newnan, but he didn’t think so.

To bohgey: It was No. 1 not Robert Anderson who fumbled late in the game after a great Lowndes drive. I saw the film last night and he was clearly down. Slow motion action or regular speed, clearly down. That drive could easily have resulted in another Lowndes TD if the fumble had not been allowed.
I look for the game Friday to be like the Brookwood game in 2005 or the North Gwinnett game last year. But, it could just as easily be like last week’s Tucker game (38-0 loss) or last year’s Harrison game (9-0 loss) if we turn the ball over and make a bunch of silly penalties.

Important regular season match ups? How about the time Valdosta, Moultrie, and Thomasville Central wound up in a three way tie with each team having one loss. The region voted for Valdosta and T-Central to have a one game playoff, leaving Moultrie out in the cold. That season was significant because it led to the expanded Region playoff format.

Well said Bohgey….while the Tift/Lowndes game was a great game to watch, there was enough “lack of class” from players on both sides of the field. Hopefully both coaches (who have great class) will address it with thier players. The NSWR/Lowndes game should be one for the ages. How fortunate can we as fans be to have the opportunity to see two great programs play in regular season and one of them not be elimenated from the playoffs and future play. Why does Collins Hill never get any love from the polls? Were 5-0 and we destroyed North Forsyth and Parkview in the first game. I think we have a chance this year to do work in the playoffs. Let us atleast crack the top 10…
There are 13 undefeated teams in Class AAAAA, and that doesn’t include North Gwinnett, which lost to a national powerhouse from South Carolina. I can’t rank them all.
And of those 14 teams, Collins Hill and Union Grove are lowest on the totem pole because of how they did in 2007. Teams like that aren’t going to make the Top 10 until they have a defining win. That might be Peachtree Ridge for CH, but only if somebody in the current Top 10 slips.

TO: By Mistermak, You must have rocks in your head. You go from one prediction to another. First, you claim how Valdosta was going to beat NSWR. When it didn’t happen, you now say NSWR has only beaten HoCO and Valdosta. Not that this is going to happen BUT if NSWR beats all teams in 1AAAAA, you will say they need to beat all the teams in Metro Atlanta to be accepted into AAAAA. You are some kind of fair weather friend—like Benedict Arnold—not to be trusted. Now as far as NSWR fans talking trash, NSWR was never welcomed by fans like you from the beginning. The first statement from ALL fans was not, “great to have you aboard to strenghten 1AAAAA”—-it was, “you are now in the big time, we are going to kick your butts” because playing in 1AAAAA is not like AAAA. As much as East Paulding bloggs about moving up AAAAA, her new region welcomed her without negative comments. NSWR fans just fought back with comments from the likes of ENR, Reeze, Northside Fan, Georgia and others.

Do you have to encourage Homet even more?
Hey wildmanhoya, I’m not proud when it comes to BBQ ribs, hahaha. Like my daddy said, Call me many things, but don’t call me late for dinner. In my view, you can never go to too many tailgate gatherings! Don’t think that I won’t be searching for Big Pappi’s grill also! Then after I get that smoked turkey leg out of my mouth, it will be time for business to pick up.

Good point about the ribs and then turkey legs to boot. You are really making me hungry. Unfortunatley I have been to too many tailgates and have had more than my share of many ribs, wings, etc. At least my doctor says I have.
Have fun with Homet and his band of brothers. They might need a shoulder (pork shoulder beings we’re talking about ribs) to cry on, or maybe munch on, after the game.

Wildman Hoya - Couldn’t agree more “wildman”. I am not one to look ahead, but had the Etowah/Harrison game penciled in long before this matchup with East. Have to take them one at a time of course, and am looking forward to watching the “weasles” squirm in their “boneyard”. YIKES! Go Etowah!

Fair play Fan, Northside has and will continue to speak the loudest on the field of play. There are only a handful of programs in this state that can honestly say that they have performed better than Northside on the field of play.
The numbers are frankly staggering. Northside is indeed a state powerhouse. In the past decade, there have been NO down years. Not even Lowndes, Valdosta, Warner Robins, Parkview, or Camden County can say that.
Friday will be yet another opportunity for Northside to show what we have shown better than ANY major program in the state of Georgia in the past decade. Without a doubt, Northside has been the team of the decade.
I know that there will be many Eagle fans making the trip south and many more of us listening to every snap online and on the radio.
Go Eagles!

Hey Todd, I just looked at the AJC’s list of top High-School Running Back Prospects, and I was wondering, Why isn’t Michael Boydston, Walton High, on the list??!! He has been incredible this year, 1054 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns in 5 games! Where is the love Todd?
I didn’t compile that list, but I suspect it’s because of the lack of scholarship offers. Those players are ranked on their college potential, not their high school performance.

TODD HOLCOMB, Sorry for having gone into one of my “rambling” esays rather than staying with the subject at hand. But when the name “Rodney Hudson” came up several times, just had to chime in. But back to the subject: “Greatest Regular Season Match-Ups”. Scott Sickler (Granger Historian), suggested 2004 LaGrange vs. Shaw. It is tempting to agree. This was Shaw’s first year in AAA after having won 4 straight region titles and one state title in AAAA, while having never lost a region game during this era. The 2004 Grangers were equally impressive having won 4 straight region titles along with 2 state titles without a region loss. Shaw returned basically the same team who in 2003 lost in the state quarter finals in AAAA to Marist 18-17. Marist went on to win the AAAA title in 2003. The hype was huge but the game was not even close. LG 37 Shaw 10. You suggested 1991 LG vs. Newnan. Both teams entered the game undefeated but when all is said and done no one really gave the Cougars much of a chance. A talented, but very young team. In this case the game out lived the hype. The Cougars showed up at Callaway Stadium to win. And, they almost did. Final Score: LG 20 Newnan 14. But my choice might be 2004 LG vs. Newnan. First game of the season. Both teams nationally ranked. The Grangers were the defending AAA champs. The Cougars were coming off of a 12-2 season with an appearance at the “dome” . The AJC and AP had LG ranked #1 in AAA and Newnan #2 and #3 in AAAAA. The game was nationally televised. LG won 35-7. Then finished out the season 15-0 with another state AAA title. The tighest game LG would experience during the season was an 11 point margin against WACO in the state final. (There I go again. Sorry for the esay.).

ENR: Great post. Welcome to the Region. Your addition certainly adds to our claim of having the best region in the state. There are very few programs this side of Delasalle like NSWR’s, or as ya’ll say, “NHS.”
The weather forecast looks like conditions will be perfect Friday night. Wish you could see the game in person. It could be one for the ages!
This might be your year to get NSWR’s first state championship in Georgia’s largest classification. Personally I wish you had beat Parkview in 2001. With the two of us, Valdosta, WR, Tifton, Coffee, Colquitt in a year or two, and Houston County, we have without question the state’s best footbal region.

Good grief! “As ya’ll say ‘NHS’”
Seriously…Northside is ONE word.
Brookwood is one word. You don’t type “BWHS”.
Parkview is one word. You don’t type “PVHS”.
Valdosta is one word. You don’t say “VDHS”.
Just because it has two syllables doesn’t mean it is two words. If you abbreviate it with Warner Robins in the title, it would be “NWR”. Not “NSWR”. Wow!

DROCK 08, Think we are on the same page when it comes down to Newnan. But as far as Coffee Co goes, I still have some question marks. One thing is for sure: With the exception of Coweta Co, Newnan has already played their toughest game in the regualr season. Hope that will not hurt them in the play-offs. Have you seen what LG has done since losing to Newnan in Game 1? Their stats have been almost as impressive as Newnan’s. Point is, Newnan whipped a VERY good LG team in Game 1. I look for both teams to go deep in the play-offs, maybe even winning their respective classifications. Hope so.

Ya’ll need to remember that NSWR scored exactly 7 points against a Carver team that lost 22-0 to Baldwin. Carver could have easily won the game with a short field goal but, as always, Carver has no kicker, period.
And Tift County lost to who?
Why is it that Lowndes can have a tough night or wake up call in Tifton, but Northside almost got beat by Carver? Sounds like a HUGE double standard!!! You will have to come with something more solid to predict a victory, let alone blowout over NHS.
By the way, what did they do the week after Carver?
I am not saying that NHS will win…I am not saying they won’t or can’t get blown out. What I am saying is the likelihood of someone voting for the latter and being dead serious about it is based upon sheer craziness. Carver is just another example that on any friday night, anything can happen. That’s why we PLAY the games!!!

Actually FairPlayFan my comments were more like “Great to have you aboard the 1AAAAA locomotive, but you are going to find out what 1AAAAA is all about”. NSHS or NSH or NWR or NSWR (pick one) is a great addition to 1AAAAA just like Camden would be if the drive wasn’t so far away. Also, as a Lowndes fan I have the utmost respect for Camden and Northside as I know we will be in for a ball game with either one. Still doesn’t change the fact we are going to kick your butts this Friday night. :-)

The AD is not dumb enough to lose his certificate over it and won’t let him on the b-ball team he coaches, unlike the f-ball coach. He may be underrated, but it’s only in the # of suspensions one person can get in a year. And, he doesn’t live in the district either. Yeah, don’t perpetrate on this blog cause we all know. The Cannon actually gets fired from “aboard ship” that is “docked” in the streetside endzone! It is manned by a RAIDER crew that always gets a good workout as they salute each RAIDER scoring drive with a loud “broadside”!!!
As far as the Bar B Que goes you will have NO PROBLEM locating it…Nice sliced brisket to piled high pulled pork compliment the boiled peanuts and other fare you will find located all over “THE BONEYARD”…We’ll see that you get fixed up!!!
All I can advise is for folks to get to the school EARLY…it is going to be a PACKED HOUSE!!! and while ample parking is available the later you come the tricker it gets.
Time to reset that countdown clock…73.5 hours and counting…TICK…TICK…TICK!!!

Homet, I’m wondering why I am Pulling for Etowah? I really should be pulling for East, if I think Etowah is the better team. I think it’s all the trash talk, and mainly because you are the rookies of the region. Friday night things will definately get interesting, no matter who wins. Every game is important to all teams, but as the standings go friday is big for 5AAAAA football. The 1AAAAA game .will most likely determine the region champs. That it not so with region 5AAAAA. Our teams are more equivalent, and that makes for some good competition. I will say East has made this region more fun so far this year . Your excitement is contagious and that is good for all. Please everyone keep the refs out of it if your good enough to win you’ll win period. LOWNDES won against TIFT friday night period. The VIKINGS will be ready to play friday night they will be fired up to play the VIKINGS fans will be very loud and the GEORGIA BRIDGEMEN with their 354 band members are going to be really loud i mean LOUD…..COME ON DOWN…..Your in far a heck of a battle and your players will now it after the game. If you can pull it off i will be one of the first to say well done you’ll here no excuses out of me. LOWNDES does not have to prove themselves we did not rank ourselves #2 in the nation and #1 in the state it seems that NORTHSIDE has to prove why they have won 35 straight games. East Paulding ranked 11. Maxpreps agrees with Camden’s #1. FYI Massey has Lowndes over Northside 20-14 and forecasts Etowah over East Paulding 18-14. AAAA 1 Westside 2 TCC 3 Marist 4 Mays 5 Sandy Creek 6 Rome 7 North Clayton 8 Chamblee 9 Tucker 10 Dalton. Statesboro is 11, Evans gets no respect and limps in at 17.

Here’s what I want to know:
Why does Northside High of Warner Robins get saddled with a hyphen (Northside-Warner Robins) while Central High of Macon does not (Central Macon)?
And why is Lakeside of DeKalb County called Lakeside-DeKalb, but Lakeside of Columbia County called Lakeside-Evans?
And why do people refer to schools that don’t exist, such as Coffee County and Lowndes County? Or why don’t those counties make it easy on us and name their schools Coffee County and Lowndes County?

rocketrob, Northside seems to have a good “present” program, too (5-0 is about as good as you can get). And, just for the record, I think Northside will also have 11 men on both sides of the ball Friday night. We don’t really care whether you are impressed with a 35 game winning streak, but just wondering when Lowndes ever accomplished that feat? Sounds like you are already laying the ground work for any “deficiencies” the refs may have. By the way, we don’t scare. We might lose, but I’ll guarantee we will not be intimidated. I give Lowndes their props, but they aren’t the New England Patriots. And, just for the record, I’ll take Xavier Bacon over Greg Reid.
But just for your info, the correct word is “you’re” (not your), “for” (not far), “know” (not now), “hear” (not here).

To all the Northside WR fans talking smack about owning Lowndes 5-1. How many of the current Lowndes players have played against Northside Warner Robins? BTW, going into this year you were 0-7 against Valdosta & Warner Robins was 2-11 against Valdosta. With this logic, Valdosta should have beaten Warner Robins & Northside because they own them. What has happened in the past has no bearing on the game Friday night. That being said Lowndes should win due to the home field advantage. To be the king you have to beat the king.

To Todd: Why in the list of top quarterbacks last week and running backs this week are Russell Powell and Kendreas Wynn not listed. Russell last year numbers speak for themselves. 2500 yards passing 500 yards rushing 27 tds 9ints. This year he has almost 1000 yards passing and close to 200 yards rushing in 12 quarters. Just wondering I think you should ask coaches and fans as well as recruitors when asking who is truly the best players around. The same for Wynn Newnan’s running back over 3,000 yards rushing and almost 1000 yards receiving with over 40 tds for his career sounds like a complete back to me. I have seen kids who is nowhere on their level rated three four and five stars based on their 40 times and height. I wouldn’t take any quarterback/running back duo over these two Cougars. They are two of the reasons why we have the best offense in GA.

The reason we bring up the record is because Lowndes has been a program to contend with MUCH longer than NHS. And 2 of those wins came against very good Lowndes teams. Valdosta hadn’t played NHS since 1994. A lot has happened in those 14 years! We have played and beaten Lowndes a few times since we last met Valdosta and unfortunately they are down right now, so the victory isn’t that sweet. So no, the past has no bearing on what will happen Friday…but in the 4 meetings with Lowndes in between playing Valdosta, we have gotten our act together on Green Street.

Lowndes 1981 and Yo Please check your facts (look at the Lowndes website on the 2005 football schedule) because Lowndes was coached by McPherson when they lost to Norhtside WR in scrimmage game at Lowndes High School (score 14 to 21). That year Lowndes was preseason ranked #2 in the nation and went on to win the Ga. State AAAAA football title against Brookwood.*

To Slalom01: Since June I have predicted that Newnan will win the AAAAA Championship Lagrange will win the AAA Championship. The Falcons will win 5 games this year because they can run the ball.UGA will lose 3 games. Ga Tech will win atleast 8 games and will give any opponent all they can handle because you have great athletes running Paul Johnson offense. And Ga Tech will be a National Power within 3 years. I told everyone Clemson was overated and Coffee was the second best team in 1AAAAA. I have been laughed at and critized all year about these comments. Only thing I have to say is only time will tell. As far as the Newnan team I think this is the most unified Cougar team ever!!! They really do everything together. I have so much confidence in their offense I think they can score atleast 30 points against anyone. What makes this team great is their defense is better than it was last year. Their performance against Creekside was amazing. Creekside had 48 yards of total offense with 25 coming in the last drive against 2nd and 3rd stringers. Creekside cross the 50 yard line only once the entire game on the last drive. Enough said I think SGT Chris who picked Creekside to upset Newnan became a believer.

Again, 1 AAAAA arguement, they may have tough top 3 teams. And the notion that Valdosta would be in Top 3 in most regions if it werent in region 1 is mad. After Coffee in top 3 I would say they would not compete in any other top 3 in AAAAA. Valdosta lost to who last week? I would not dare compare Grayson or North Gwinnett to Lowndes as number 1’s as reprisentative of Gwinnett. But I think it would be dog fight after that. Camden edges Gwinnett also. I think Todd has rankings right. I would almost swap North Gwinnett and Grayson even. Grayson needs to beat Brookwood before they earn a spot in top 5 to me. I really like Stephenson also. Anyone think Valdosta ranks top 3 in another region? Long shot in region 3 maybe.I like the WR Demons better than Valdosta. Do not know why I let a notion from ENR bug me but it did. I thought Valdosta was good but that last game killed that thought.

And why do people refer to schools that don’t exist, such as Coffee County and Lowndes County? Or why don’t those counties make it easy on us and name their schools Coffee County and Lowndes County?
This was a question I often wondered about as well until I went to work at the Dublin paper and mistakenly called Treutlen by the Treutlen County moniker. Not trying to drag race into this debate, but I was informed by a longtime Treutlen supporter very emphatically that it is TREUTLEN and not Treutlen COUNTY. The reason for this at Treutlen (not sure about other places such as Lowndes or Coffee) was that the white high school before integration was Soperton High School and the black school was Treutlen County so when the two combined, they made it simply Treutlen.
Enough said I think SGT Chris who picked Creekside to upset Newnan became a believer.
I don’t know if SGT CHRIS picked against Newnan or not, but I know that I have been eating plenty of crow based on last week’s upset special of the week. I especially like the one e-mailer who didn’t have the guts to leave his name who said that I wasn’t worth what they were paying me to pick games and then offered his assistance. I sent it back and said the difference is that I do get paid to do it and he doesn’t. Plus it looks like I will get plenty of free BBQ out of the deal this week at East Paulding. camdenwildcatfan Northside has “no team spead”. If you mean “speed” then you absolutely don’t know what you are talking about. As for coming into the season talking trash, again you are full of it. Northside was the one being trashed, told that we were not worthy of playing with the “big boys”, etc. There were certainly many comments to try and diminish our accomplishments in AAAA. I, as well as many of our other fans, deeply resent that and will continue to defend them.

ENR has a lot of stats, so check this out. It was taken from each program’s respective websites. Both Lowndes and NHS (or NSWR, or whatever) have each rushed the ball 177 times in 5 games. Lowndes has 1448 yards and NHS/NSWR or whatever has 933 yards. Lowndes has played a very good PeaRidge team, an even better Tift County team, and a Ware County team that gave NHS (or NSWR or whatever) all they wanted in last year’s AAAA title game. NHS (or NSWR or whatever) has played a fairly good Valdosta team, Carver (and should have lost to them) and who else? Lowndes WILL run the ball Friday night against NHS (or NSWR or whatever) and will play the second team QB by the 2nd quarter. NHS (or NSWR or whatever) will not beat Lowndes running the ball.

For a poster who considers Valdosta, FAIRLY GOOD! I would be a bit wary with some statements I make.
Carver should have…could have…would have…but
They out gained NHS 280 to 123…but…
Carver needed a feild goal, heck an xtra point would have been fine, but…
You can run or do whatever you need to do, but this team has already shown the ability to eek out a win, however ugly. You needed fumble recoveries and specials teams plays to beat Tift but guess what…THAT IS A PART OF PLAYING THE GAME. Lowndes can get 1000 yards of offense for all I care…so long as that score is in favor of the Eagles at triple zero, you can have the STATS!!!

HSBallfan—thanks for the low down, and man what a bad break for Chris Beck and the Tigers! I sure wish it weren’t so, but this team is not the mighty one of last year, especially with all the injuries in key positions…Hmmmm. Too bad the Tigers had no answer for Ivory in the 2nd half at the dome last year…I’m sure they could have beat Ware County if they could have answered Ivory with anything at all (a couple of field goal opportunities that were passed up, etc etc)…Thanks again!

George ,Roger , Trublue and other Northside folks…………..There is no need to go back and forth with this fool Camdenwildcat…His sole reason on this blog is to down Northside….If you notice he never mentions any thing about his Camden team at all. The Players ,coaches ,Strengths ,weaknesses , How in the hell they Lost to Chattahoochie at home , nothing… He should get a Burgundy and silver skirt and join the Lowndes cheerleading squad this friday..Gotta shve those legs though!…….. You guys already know we earn our respect on the field……. The only folks downing us are those who never played us or haven’t in a while…..You’ll never see folks from WR ,Hoco ,Baldwin ,Westside (mcn) ,Tucker ,Peach Co. ,Perry , Marist ,Rome or anyone else we’ve recently played talking smack ,because they already know….Starting friday the rest will know….Just like we always do ,we’ll have to shut them up on the field. (Where is Wildcatfan?)……. Even a win this friday nothing will change , we’ll have to beat Grayson , Newnan or Camden or someone else…..The only respect we’ll ever get is North of Watson Blvd ,thats all that matters.

Sorry Michael I checked and I missed it..the web site that is. We have been preseason scrimmaging TCC about as long as I can remember now. Maybe you are right and if you are I suppose that makes you preseason champs. That would be about like the Falcons going 5-0 in preseason and beating the New England Patriots all 5 times. So what! but congratulations any how.

gatorhater Yes Demps has been moved to linebacker right after the Peachtree Ridge game. Copeland was moved back to defensive end (where he started last year) from linebacker and gives us to speed demons at each side of the defensive line. They do pressure the qback and do so quite well, sometimes with just a 3 down lineman set.

Right Reeze, Even “AViking Fan” is acting silly now. The nearer we get to Friday he is now talking about how Lowndes has gained more yardage against NS although NS record is 5-1 them. Also, how NS came closer to losing to Ware Cty in the AAAA championship. I suppose he wants to partition the GHSA to chance to yardage gain to determine game winners. What a nut!

To all NSWR people. All of you have talked trash since the beginning!! We have been earning respect for this entire decade and each year we come back with a very competitive team. I can’t help but wonder what you are going to do or say when you lose to Lowndes. They are truly the team to beat. I have no doubt you have a good squad. You have won a lot of games(even if it was in AAAA) LOL! But you did win back-to-back champs and that has to mean something!! But come on you have to admit you have talked alot of trash since moving UP! Let the boys play the game and see what happens. I don’t take any pleasure from playing in this crappy region. I hate it!! As a matter of fact it aint even worth the ticket price for me. they are the most boring football games you will ever see. The best thing is getting to watch the JV in the 2nd half and see what is coming up the next couple of years. For me the season starts in the first round of the playoffs. I wish we could go to Region 1 because challenges are why you play the game. I would much rather watch a great game that we lose than to watch a game that is over half way into the first quarter. but each year we are very competitive in the playoffs. Yea we lost to Chattahoochie by 1 point because our kicker missed an extra point. also their coach was on our staff the year before and our coach didn’t mix things up to keep him from being in our huddle. but the fact is we lost and that is that. Valdosta is not Valdosta any more! remember 2 years ago they only won 1 game and that I believe was to a team from utah! I think? I don’t talk trash, but I do like to brag a little. But I also recognize that we play in a terrible region so I really don’t start bragging until November. So quit feeling the need to rant and rave about NSWR and just let the season play out. Like one blogger said it will probably be Us and you and Lowndes and ? in the final 4 so see you there!

YO How can you see the TCC scrimmage game in 2005 and not the Northside one RIGHT BELOW IT? You didn’t want to see it…unless you have that selective blindness that has been going around.
MISTERMAK I am not one to browbeat anyone, but I have felt rather offended by some non-eagle fans on here. To hear you almost give us credit for maybe winning 35 straight games is…worth something I guess. Eventhe recent poll…somebody else should be #1 gets more votes than NHS. It gets old! We have proven ourselves in each classification the past few seasons. Before they diss NHS cause we don’t win championships. Now they diss us cause we “chose to move down so we could win one.” We are an unacknowledged fair catch away from beating Parkview in the 2002 AAAAA state championship game. But it is just like I said earlier, people always want respect for their programs but don’t want to give any out. No one has said lowndes is a bad program, just that they have a 5-1 record against NHS. People in AAAAA feel that teams can’t move up and shine? As I pointed out WRHS did very well the year they moved back into the classification. So yes, the boys will play it out on Friday and it will be a good game. It is not going to discredit what either program has done the past few seasons. It is because of the teams recent success that this game is huge, so let’s commend everyone for the past and get ready to make some new history. Throwdown in the South…Northside @ Lowndes, it gets no bigger!!!

I must say that I understand how it feels to pull for a program that get no respect despite all of the accomplishments. No matter what Camden does or who they beat they are always questioned and trashed because of the weak region they play in. Even though it is not by choice. So to all Northside fans I say good luck!! It is true that a loss in this game (unless it is a blow out) should not hurt either program’s respect. I am sure that we will get to play one or both of you soon enough. We look foward to it and I will be glad to buy ticket to a real football game!!

Remember the old 2-AAAA or 2-AAAAA and how weak those regions were? Prior to the rearrangement, region 2-AAAA had only 3 champions in about 20 or 30 years: Warner Robins had most of them, NHS had 6 of them, Baldwin, Lakeside, Evans had one each. I venture to say that region was weaker than anything SE GA could dream up. But when ur program is good, they’re good! Camden will get respect once it shows that they beat anyone…weak or strong.

Let’s talk players and stats and history. For instance, if Etowah wins this game, it will be the first 6-0 start for the team since 1987. MISTERMAK—-NOT BY CHOICE?? did they appeal to the GHSA to get out of the region?? LaGrange tried to get out of their region and got denied…did Camden? If they didnt, then you are going to continue to get bashed for that weak region. So dont act like there werent options because they were….Thats like southern cal playing in the southern conference lol!!!!

REEZE,,,,Just for you i will stop the capital letters. I truly do not have anything against WRNS, its just all trash you guys talk, and when someone talks trash back, you guys get very defensive. The first blog i ever read was how WRNS was better than Camden co.,and how you guys should be rated ahead of us, after we jump you guys in the polls.Criticizing Camdens region we can only play three non region games. And we played teams that has very rich traditions. Our region has eight teams so thats seven region games we have to play. We play very tough non region teams, like lowndes, Brookwood, Parkview, Walton, Chatt, Norcross, Hoover, Lake City Fla, a top program from South Carolina,, thats some very good programs, and we defeated most of them. But every time we beat one of those programs thier just not that good this year. Oh by the way Hoover is winning and basically shutting everyone else out. The only lost is to Camden. I need a favor can i borrow your skirt and bloomers for the game, since you said i need to put some on, and to go and cheer for Lowndes. Honestly I do not think you guys will get blown out I think you will play very well. It just makes better blogging, Everyone is always bashing Camden, so im not suppose to support my alma mater class of 86. Whoever wins mostly will play and easier second round game, and the loser will in all mostly likely play Camden and i think it will be a very good game.So the only reason im rooting for Lowndes is of you guys talking so much trash about Camden, Lowndes and Camden has played each other 5 or 6 times in the last 6 years, we have a mutal respect for each other, why is because we know each others programs are excellent. Not saying Wrns program isn’t excellent which it is, but when you play a certain program that many times you just gain a certain respect for each other.I respect what you guys did in AAAA. In any classification if you win, that many games you must be doing something right, so i respect that, but come into AAAAA and dismissing what Camden has done and blogging about what you are going to do to all the teams in AAAAA, it makes for people rooting against you. WRNS you created all of this, of everyone hating WRNS its just not true. So good luck Friday I truly do not care who wins, from a stand point of the blooging, im rooting for Lowndes. Go Cats.

Nobody from Northside High School in Warner Robins refers to their school as Northside-Warner Robins. That is a tag applied by the news media or GHSA. We don’t like it.
I’m with you on this. The problem is that there’s a Northside High in Columbus, and there used to be a Northside High in Atlanta. I try to say Northside of Warner Robins, not Northside-Warner Robins, but when doing rankings, I follow newspaper style.
You’ll note that the Georgia High School Football Historians site uses parentheses to distinguish schools of the same name: Northside (Warner Robins) and Central (Macon). I like that better.
To Todd: Why in the list of top quarterbacks last week and running backs this week are Russell Powell and Kendreas Wynn not listed. … Just wondering I think you should ask coaches and fans as well as recruitors when asking who is truly the best players around.
I didn’t do those lists, so I can’t answer to that. I can only tell you that it’s based on a player’s college potential, not his high school performance. So college offers count for a lot.
But I will say that a high school coach’s evaluation of a player is tricky. Some are objective. Some are trying to sell their player. And their analysis of another team’s player is often swayed by how that played performed in one game, or in a few games on film, which can be deceiving. Not saying that talking to coaches isn’t valuable, but you have to know how to sift through their info they’re giving you.

camdenwildcat, I’m with you on this. Everybody at Lowndes respects Camden immensely, its program, coaches, players, and fans. I still have a baby blue toboggan one your fans gave me after our 30-0 victory over camden in the GA Dome and asked me to carry it when we played for the State title the next week.
Your team is doing something different this year in the regular season that will prepare them for the playoffs. You are playing very quality opponents in the regular season. Smart move! Camden really was the 2nd best AAAAA in the state last year. Hopefully we can take care of business this Friday against another really good team Northside (of Warner Robins - did I get this correct?) We have certainly never played a team with that kind of winning streak, especially when we are on a 19-0 winning streak ourselves. The game will be televised on a CBS cable channel, and newspaper media folks from all over have asked for passes. But one very surprising thing about the game, in today’s AJC poll more people are voting for “some other team” than for Northside. I really think that’s the reaction from around the state to rants by some of the Northside fans like EagleNationRising and others. Wish us luck Friday, we’ll need it, and hopefully meet you guys again later this year!

CamdenWildcat I have watched from afar and to ENR’s defense, look at how many posters were welcoming Northside to AAAAA. Northside has played and excelled in the largest classification of Georgia football for over 3 decades. Everyone is screaming about respect. It is very disrespectful to welcome a program that has played for more than 30 years in the largest classification and played in the second largest for only 4 years. It seems strange and as a Northside grad disrespectful to assume that this is new to us.

TODD, here is another one that could make the “TOP 10” regular season games list. 1986: LaGrange vs. Valdosta in Game 1 of the season. I believe that the 2 teams were ranked #1 and #2 respectively, but not necessarily in that order. The game was played in “Titletwon USA” and the Wildcats won 16-6. I cannot verify the pre-season rankings, but believe this is right. If so, when was the last time that a pre-season #1 was pitted against a pre-season #2 while playing in the same classification in Game 1? Maybe Scott Sickler can shed some light on the pre-season rankings.

NorthsidePride, well said. I don’t recall seeing any Northside supporter saying we were going to come in and wipe out 1AAAAA, go undefeated, and win state. All that might occur, but most likely it won’t, with our issues on offense. However, when multiple bloggers attack you and say you have no chance now that you’re in the big classification, it’s only natural to give back what you’re getting. All that becomes a non-issue by 10:30 Friday night anyway. Win or lose, I am sure the Eagles will represent themselves well as will the thousands of Northside fans making the trip.

Lets call it like it is. Obviously NHS can compete in the big classification but they are yet to prove they can win the big one. They have proven they can almost win the big one but they have not won the big one. Yet when they go down to AAAA and win it now they are the best thing to ever show up in Ga. High School football and suddenly for the last 2 years they have been proclaiming themselves the best team in the state. NHS likes to quote history lessons when it comes to won loss records and preseason victories…LOL… but the history lesson says that NHS can only come close to winning the big one when it comes to the biggest classification in the state of Ga. Win the big one and prove yourselves to be the best team in the state (instead of just bragging about it) and then you can really talk with some actual authority. At Lowndes we measure ourselve by state championships in the largest classification. When NHS takes that trophy home then they will have done what Camden and Lowndes have already done. Until then you are still the best in AAAA and a team that can only compete in AAAAA. Oh yea I forgot (and brag about the preseason games you have won…LOL). If you wanted history then there is the only history lesson that matters if you plan on getting an A in your history class. 1999 declared themselves the best of all time but didn’t finish the drill in the biggest classification. 2002 almost beat Parkview in the biggest classification but didn’t finish the drill. The biggest classification awaits the day that NHS can finish the drill.

Maybe you were and maybe you are but now quit quoting history unless you are going to report as they say on Fox new….”All the facts”. Lowndes was getting ready to win another AAAAA state chamionship in future years. In fact we have now won as many AAAAA state championships as you like to brag you have beat us. I like our record better. State champs in AAAAA…now finish the drill. Also, even should you beat Lowndes this Friday you aren’t going to get the respect of AAAAA until you prove you can finish the drill in AAAAA. At least not the kind of respect you want.

To SGT CHRIS It has been well documented on these blogs for some time now. But just for you I will state it again. To my knowledge Camden has petitioned the state 2 times in the past 5 years to move to region 1AAAAA. Both times it was voted down citing travel times for other sports. Primarily because of the schools up near Warner Robbins (Houston Co). It is only 2 hours or so from here to Lowndes and Tifton. And less than that to Coffee. We really don’t like this region. And We wish that the Savannah schools were not so weak. But they are terrible. So it is not by our choice that we play in this region.
On another note: I see that Lowndes is ranked #9 and NHS is ranked 28th on the rivals top100. sure wish we could watch or listen to ya’lls game Friday!! Good luck and may the best team win!!

It time now to see just how good of a “head coach” coach Stephens really is at Tucker. That great team from last year was comprised of lots returning seniors from a team that finished 7-3 the year before and that team was put together by coach Ballad and they also had the addition of Jonathan Davis from St Pius. Any decent coach could have gone deep in the playoffs with that team. So I repeat, its now time to see what kind of “head coach” coach Stephens really is now that he has to develop his own team not one that was inherited.

I have read lots of post on here from the NHS fans. To read your blogs one would think that your team is Gods gift to football. I understand about team pride and all but come on, win the regoin and then brag. After you play Lowndes tomorrow night, you still have Coffee ant Tift both to play. Niether of the two are good at rolling over and playing dead either. It will be a long season for you. Welcome to 1 AAAAA!

Newnan still has the toughest game on our schedule in east coweta. Records mean nothing in this game. It is the toughest game every year.
NHS does not equal Northside of Warner Robins. NSWR is ok I guess. But, Newnan has been NHS since before 1900 and I think it was pretty much settled in 2003 to the tune of 23-0.

Sorry our blogs were malfunctioning. We proably lost some good comments. And some dumb ones. : )
TODD, Although more than just a few bloggers have indicated that the “BIG GAME” will be televised, can you shed some light on the subject?
All I know is that CBS College Sports is the one televising and that it’s national. Can get it on dish or cable if you have that channel. But you might have to Google for more info.
TODD, here is another one that could make the “TOP 10” regular season games list. 1986: LaGrange vs. Valdosta in Game 1 of the season. I believe that the 2 teams were ranked #1 and #2 respectively, but not necessarily in that order. … Maybe Scott Sickler can shed some light on the pre-season rankings.
Here’s what Mr. Sickler reports on that one:
”1986—LG was No. 1 preseason in Ga. (No. 4 nationally preseason in USA-Today) and Valdosta No. 2 and we lost to Hyder’s V-Cats, 16-6. We had over 400 yards of offense and held V to under 200, if I remember correctly but turnovers did us in that one, at least 4-5? Another year of perhaps 7-8 in the last 25-30 years we could have won other state titles -— ‘83 with Vince Sutton, the late Nate Hill, ‘85, ‘86, ‘89, ‘96 terrific team lost to Benedictine (Josh Mallard, UGA) using a Notre Dame box and held the ball all game, ‘00 in the mud 6-0 loss to Swainsboro in second-round, but as bitter as it gets in ‘02 to Screven Co., 15-14, again, other arguments for the fans….”

Slalom1, I believe Todd has given you some more facts on LG’s great games. There’s a world of difference between regular season games vs. region and/or state playoff games, as most realize.
We set the stage for our ‘91 state and national championship run after we were the victim of a public flogging by coach Lloyd Bohannon’s Griffin Bears, 34-16 at Callaway Stadium in the region playoffs in 1990.
Griffin used a devastating rushing attack with over 300 yards on a junior and sophomore-dominated LG defense. In short, Griffin gutted us like a 50-pound catfish in that game and we learned from it about playing at a higher level, as coach Guthrie believed we could. We all knew ‘91 was potentially a super team with a ton of talent, especially on defense. People need to remember we had only 55 kids on the ‘91 roster and nearly 25 of them would go on to play college football or a few in the in the NFL (Walt Harris, Daiello Burks).
At the end of the Griffin ‘90 playoff loss on top of the Callaway Stadium press box was then assistant Ben Aderholt. Ben and I were good friends. I leaned over to Ben and said, “…they gashed us up the middle like gutting a catfish. If we can play better run defense with the kids we’ve got back, we can really be something special in 1991.”
‘Nuff said on that. It was a special team. Anyone who follows our program knows we struggled mightily at times on offense in ‘91 (losing to Forest Park) but the LG defense was on another planet each week and dominated. We scored 432 points, to that point, the most in our history but it was defense — as McEachern coach Jimmy Dorsey knew — which made LG such a special team — speed, power, depth and the Granger swagger was a Category 5 storm all season.
Walt Harris, named to the All-SEC Team for the 80s from Miss. State is still in the NFL and one of the oldest players in the league and still the athletic ability to play cornerback.
Newnan may have been better than LG on offense in ‘91 but wasn’t in the same universe defensively as LG was, not even close. Newnan might have been the best team we played in ‘91, a ton of talent, mostly juniors. How Newnan lost at Hines-Bradwell Institute is still shocking to me. It was win over Newnan which set us up as the region champion to host four playoff games (Riverdale, Statesboro, Valdosta, McEachern) and on the road at Colquitt Co. for the finals. That’s a 9-0 home record, the best in school history until the ‘04 bunch came along and physically wore out every team with unreal speed and physical play with a 15-0 record and 10-0 at Callaway.

You may also listen to it on the radio listed at each schools website that usually hosts the shows. Being a former “Viking” and knowing what i have seen them do over the past few years i will have to say Lowndes will win this one although i do not know what the final score will be. We have been the underdog a lot in the past when playing teams that were supposed to be “real good”. I know McPherson has his team focused and ready as he does in every game they play so tonights game should be interesting . My hats off to all the players of each team and that no one gets hurt. I will be here at home in Dallas watching the game with my beer and popcorn in hand. It should be a good one. Be sure to notice the nice stadium facilities as well as they have remodeled over the past year so know that NHS will be coming into a 1st class facility and will be taken care of in true southern hospitality aka a$$ whooping. Yo Reid picked it up in the end zone and took it about 102 yards.
How was it possible for Reid to advance the ball after stepping in the end zone? I really need clarification on when or not this can happen. The only reason I ask is WR got an interception in the end zone against Tift and it was ruled a touch back because according to the “rules” that ball was not eligible for advance.

Granger80, Do you have a drinking problem? I suggested that the 1986 LG vs. Valdosta game might be considered as one of the “Regular season”s best”. My memory told me that the 2 teams were ranked #1 and #2, but suggested that Scott Sickler verify that. He did. Then you bring up the 1990 “post season game against Griffin”, which is not the subject. Then you state that LG lost to Forest park in 1991? Are you drunk or just old? You stated that the LG offense struggled at times in 1991. Against who? NSWR 38-0. Mckeachern 17-6. Clarke Central 21-0. Newnan 20-14 Valdosta 6-0. I attended every game in 1991 and I do not recall the Granger offense “struggling” against anyone except Valdosta 6-0. But look at the competition. Newnan’s offense better than LG’s?! Come on. LG dominated the game completely shutting Newnan down until the 4th quarter. So, what new facts has Todd gven me regarding LG’s best regular season games? Sober up, dude, or take another dose of geritol.

24-7, WELCOME TO 5A. You have no offense, i said that early in the week, great defense, just no offense. Bacon is no back that can carry or pick up the offense, but he did have a good first series. Quarterback is to slow. You played great in the first half, they just wore you down. You must make some changes on offense or, Tift or Coffee may really beat you guys. I truly hope you beat them so we can have a go at it in the playoffs. Speed kills as a team you are slow. If those kids take some of those bulky pads off, trying to make themselves look so big. They may be able to move a little quicker. Good luck the rest of the season. Its a difference in AAAAA especailly at the top. Maybe this will bring you guys back down to earth. That NSWR is not the best thing in highschool sports. P.S try the more speedier kid a little I understand he is young, Bacon is not what you guys are making him to make him out to be. But in NSWR defense you did lose a lot last year Ivory, Green, both wideouts just to mention a few, losing the players you lost last year, I think you guys did a good job. Once again good luck the rest of the season. Not saying Bacon is not a great player, just not a big game back.

slalom1—Let me apologize for the inaccurate statements I made about our ‘91 LG championship team and can assure you it had nothing to do with a “drinking problem, getting old or geritol.” We’re LG people here and don’t need to be stepping into the classless mode, do we? In honesty, after reading it, I laughed as well with the careless errors I made.
I wrote the lengthy response way too quickly and made several glaring errors and should have proofed it before sending it in. I did not, some errors were of the huge variety and can again, assure you, no one knew our ‘91 team better than I did nor followed them any closer and yes, we did struggle offensively in some games, not all but “mightily” was a poor choice of words to use, for sure. Do you realize it took me less than five minutes to write that response — way too fast and glaring mistakes, my fault.
We did trail Forest Park 3-0 in the second-half — third quarter — in a game we eventually won 28-6 (no, I’m not looking it up but rather taking my time to make sure it’s correct and accurate this time.) What I mean’t to say when I said incorrectly “losing to Forest Park” was that we were trailing FP in the second-half, a true statement, but came back to post the win. Huge error, another case of writing something way too quick.
LG led Newnan 17-0 in the third quarter and we held on 20-14 in a great game and were fortunate that a late N TD came back on an illegal procedure penalty or they would have tied the game or perhaps taken a 21-20 lead or the win. Great teams find ways to win and LG did. LG was a lot better than N on defense but Bass’ Cougars were loaded on offense in ‘91 and ‘92, give them the credit they are due.
We also struggled offensively in the first McEachern game as well, although 16-3 doesn’t look like it but we trailed in that game as well, 3-0 but came back to win.
Let me ask you this — which opponent was the first to score a TD on LG’s first-string defense in 1991? It was Morrow in Game 5, just before halftime on a short run, a game LG won 28-7. Who else would know that and when?
The bitter end to the 1990 season was the start to a great run in 1991 and if the loss to Griffin in the region playoffs at home wasn’t motivation enough, I don’t know what was. Yes, I was there, too.
I also brought up the 1986 matchup between LG and Valdosta, No. 1 vs. No. 2 and LG (was No. 4 in the USA-Today preseason poll), also Shaw in ‘04 and others, ask Todd Holcomb.
For your information, I researched all of LG’s history in 1991, had it published in our ‘91 program and put together all the facts & stats and quotes “They Said It” page from ‘91 in the ‘92 program, that should give you a clue who I am. Statesboro in ‘91 was basically a 33-0 shutout win but the Blue Devils scored 20 points all with less than one minute left in the game against mainly freshmen LG players. Our first-string D in ‘91 allowed only seven TDs all season, Morrow 1, Newnan 2, McEachern 2 in playoffs, Colquitt Co. 2 in finals.
I also worked closely with assistant coach Ben Aderholt in ‘91 in working with Dave Krider at the USA-Today in helping get us ranked, another clue for you and eventually helping us win a national title…ask coach Traylor or better yet, call up coach Guthrie, he’ll tell you….Do you know how the LG website came about and where all the old pics and program covers, etc… came from, 1991, etc…? Be careful when you say unkind things about a person and find out they are one of the same who verified all of LG’s history in the first place…Nick Hyder quotes, Billy Henderson quotes on Hudson and Charlie Trippi, etc…? The list goes on, LG-Newnan series history, etc… We all love our schools and high school football, people make mistakes and try to correct the errors…Forest Park in ‘91 was just like Perry in ‘04 — LG trailed at half 3-0, woke up in the second-half and buried FP and Perry to win going away…

Mistakes again, in ‘04 LG trailed Perry 7-3 at half and then Tray Blackmon’s KO hit on the opening kick of the second-half was recovered in the end zone for a TD and LG was off to a 31-7 flogging…
I’m glad you caught the errors, it was good to have a chance to correct mistakes. Just do the right thing and stay on the high road, there’s way too much negativity on these blogs…

I expect it to be a close game, with whoever takes advantage of opportunities winning. I just hope that the officials (wherever they are from) will let the players on the field decide the outcome. I don’t want to win or lose based on some BS call by an official. That only serves to give one team or the other reason to believe the best team did not win. That was a quote from me on September 29th high school blog. Unfortunately, my worst fears came true. The first half of the game was two heavyweights battling to a draw. Then, the officials started taking over. Greg Reid returns a punt from inside his 5 yard line and is tackled just shy of the 20. Lowndes is flagged for a “block in the back”. After the play, one player from each side is mixing it up and get called for “off setting personal foul” penalties. Lowndes is penalized half the distance to the goal (inside the 11). Right? Wrong!!! The officals give the ball to Lowndes at the 41. THAT DECISION TURNED THIS GAME INTO A JOKE. With the help of another penalty Lowndes punches it in and takes a 13-7 lead. Not much later, from near mid-field, Lowndes is facing a 3rd and long. They throw their one and only pass of the night. The Northside defender is badly beaten and running to catch up. He does catch up immediately AFTER the Lowndes receiver drops the ball. Northside is called for pass interference, automatic first down near the Northside 20. At this point I WALK OUT OF THE STADIUM. It is obvious to me that there is/was no way Northside will be allowed to beat Lowndes in Valdosta. What could have been a great classic, win or lose, had become a BIG JOKE. This is not just my opinion. I happened to be sitting next to three Camden fans who had travelled from Atlanta. There was also some Lowndes fans mixed in with us. Everyone of them expressed the same feelings, NORTHSIDE GOT HOSED. This is not meant to take anything away from Lowndes football team. I knew going in there was a good possibility we would have to deal with our first loss in three years. Lowndes deserved to be ranked number one. However, Lowndes is nowhere close to being 17 points better than Northside. What should have been a great second half (to match the first) was taken from the players, AND UNFORTUNATELY THE OFFICIALS BECAME THE STORY.

HSBallfan if Tucker finishes 3rd or 4th that means they will have to travel and play the 1’s and 2’s from other regions in the playoffs. Are you stating that they can still make a run for the stated title like last year. NO WAY. Lets just look at their problems on the offensive line and defensive line they are struggling up front on both sides of the ball. Miller Grove exposed it but and they are not very good. Marist just wrote the book for everyone to see Tucker is not that good this year they are rebuilding LOL.
By HSBallfan

Tucker was exposed as not being #1… those of us who follow the team knew that anyway. And we’ve conceded that Tucker is not the super team of 2007. But they are easily top ten, especially with Roberson and Scott back in the lineup. I’ve watched Marist play twice; they’re much better than they showed against St. Pius and, in my opinion, the #2 team in the classification behind Westside right now. Based on what I’ve seen and read, Sandy Creek probably deserves a number three, Mays number four. Just as many people had doubts about Dalton, Statesboro is equally suspect. TCC is still unproven. If healthy, Tucker is fully capable of beating any of those teams from #5 down. And keep this in mind about Tucker’s seeding: even if they lose to Chamblee, should they beat SW Dekalb, Tucker would win the subregion and get a two seed (Marist having already beaten Chamblee would get #1, SW Dekalb vs Chamblee would determine the other two seeds). That would mean a first round home game against the third team from region 5… Whitewater, Villa Rica, Banneker, too early to tell. Then look at the bracket. The second round game would probably be against the top seed from a weak region 8, possibly Clarke Central. So yes, Tucker COULD get as far as round three of the playoffs where they would more than likely meet Westside, assuming they don’t tank like they did last season. Could Tucker beat Marist or Westside? Odds are probably not, but in high school football things don’t always go by the book. So go ahead and laugh now, and we’ll see who’s laughing come Thanksgiving.

Granger80, Tommy, like you I have been a part of LG football history both as a member of the media and as a fan. And like you some of my blogs are quickly written without researching the facts. Sometimes I trust my memory too much.(knee jerk reaction when I feel that LG is being unfairly critcized whether by an outsider or an insider like yourself.) With the exception of the scathing letter that you penned to the Tifton paper following the 1983 state title “blow-out” I always thought you did a great job. I’m not Tommy and thought you would have figured out all the clues by now. Please, don’t bring up people’s names, privacy on here is important as people get so emotional.
Just ask coach Traylor, Branch, Pardue and they can tell you who I am and what I’ve done in the past, do now and will always try to do for our LG program. I’ve never been paid a cent and wouldn’t accept it — we do what we do for the love of the school and program and can contribute in a volunteer role.
Leave the coaching to our coaches, who are, without question, the best staff in the state. I’m sure you can agree with me in saying great coaching has been the most instrumental part of our championships at LaGrange.
Keep guessing, I’m not Tommy but do accept your note and taken well. This is high school football, emotions run high but is not bigger than life itself.
I have a three-volume, foot-deep scrapbook from 1991 with every LG News, Columbus, Atlanta, USA-Today polls, Valdosta paper, Marietta Journal, Moultrie from the season and nearly all games on VHS which need to be transferred over to DVD. It’s worth it’s weight in gold as another mythical national title for LG won’t ever happen again being in 3A.
We’ve had some incredible memories and championships at LG and treasure them. Look at how many great coaches never won state titles — Cronic, Max Bass, Jimmy Dorsey and others. Lloyd Bohannon only tied for one with V in ‘78, Griffin had some great teams as you well know.
Any great program such as LG has great wins and bitter, gut-wrenching losses, ie: Benedictine in ‘96 (my toughes to deal with as a 1940s Notre Dame Box beat us with ball control); J.R. Revere, DeMorrio Shank, Ashante Woodyard, etc… ‘96 Grangers should have won the title. We shut down Tift Co. in the playoffs in ‘96 at home, 19-10 but dominated them with great D, but it wasn’t 59-6 from ‘83, for sure, however, makes it a 1-1 split. How many other LG teams could have won state titles, ‘83, ‘85, ‘86, ‘89, ‘96, ‘00, ‘02 but that’s life, remember what we’ve done, a ton of schools would love to have our record. Next to Valdosta, LG’s tradition is as good or better than anyone’s, the facts prove it.
Anxious to see if the ‘08 LG team can win it all and will be very interesting with Carver and Troup ahead to position themselves in the state playoffs.

Granger80, Your thoughts regarding “what might have been” a state title team hits me right where it hurts. I would also throw in the 9-1 1959 team. But like you, I am mighty proud of what the Granger football team has accomplished through the years. So here are a few questions. I would like to get your input. 1-How do you feel about AAA? 2- Did the wins and titles mean more when the Grangers were playing in the state’s TOP classification? 3-With the expected growth in the area, it appears probable that LG will be re-classified as AAAA in the near future. Should that occur, they will most likely be placed in either Region 1 or Region 4. Region 1 looks like the better competition but LOTS of travel. On the other hand the option of “playing up” might look pretty good at that point. Should LG request to “play-up” and join AAAAA, it would almost certainly be in Region 4 AAAAA. (Newnan, East Coweta, etc.) What are your thoughts? 4-What do you think LG’s chances are this year? From what I have seen, this looks like the best overall team since 2004. 5-Just for the sake of good old fashioned “fodder”, how would you compare the 1991 team to the 2004 team?

Granger80, Just one other thing I forgot to address: By referring to you as “Tommy” I did not mean to imply that “Tommy” is your God given name. I often use the expression as in “Tommy-Gun”. i.e 45 caliber fully automatic weapon. It was meant as a compliment.
