AJC football rankings: Historic trappings for Northside-Lowndes
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
OK, Northside or Lowndes? Take sides now.
When’s the last time a regular-season game was this big? I don’t mean big in terms of “must win” because both teams will be going to the playoffs, win or lose Friday. But has there ever been a game where two teams with this much recent success have met?
We all know the history: Lowndes, the reigning Class AAAAA champ, has won three of the past four titles in the highest class and is ranked in every national poll I can find. Northside has won 35 consecutive games and consecutive Class AAAA titles and also is nationally ranked.
Where does this game rate in history in terms of a great programs hooking up at the peak of their greatness?
Before we get to that, there is other news
Westside-Macon is No. 1 for the first time ever.
Appling County is No. 5 in Class AA after the victory against Charlton County. Charlton is No. 8.
Thomasville is 0-4 for the first time in history but more amazingly is unranked by the AJC for the first time this season. While stubborn, I do have limits. I still see T’ville in the state playoffs, maybe even the quarters. But I heard Brooks County really dominated.
Marist, 38-0: I don’t know what say about that except never bet against Marist. A few Tucker friends told me they didn’t think Tucker deserved to be No. 1 even before the game. Tucker became the first team since Roswell in 2006 to go from No. 1 to unranked. Roswell came back and won a state title.
Last week, I did a Take 10 on the coaches with the best chance of winning state titles at two schools. Well, scratch John Starr from the list. Chattooga fired Starr, who won state with Josey in 1995, the day after a loss to Armuchee last week. “I didn’t see it coming,” Starr told the Rome Tribune. Well, who did? Chattooga was 3-0 and had been pretty good, though never really good, in Starr’s 12 seasons.
So who you got? Northside or Lowndes? And why? Declare now.
Todd talks back: Holcomb mixes it up with you all week long. Catch his running commentary in Poll Talk Monday-Friday. Leave comments, questions, etc., here and return to talk about this week’s rankings.
