AJC Football Predictions: Just how good is Lowndes, anyway?

Big news out of the world of politics this week: The economy is in trouble.

In other breaking news, Cobb County hasn’t won a high school football state title since 1967, and Generalissimo Francisco Franco is still dead.

Some things are so obvious that some people can’t even see it. Here we are five weeks into the season, and there are some things that are pretty clear and other things that we still need to determine. For instance, we know that Region 1-AAAAA is still the best in the state. We know that ECI is still the odds-on favorite in Class A. We know that Buford is still Buford.

Other things we need a little time to figure out. Exactly how good is Lowndes? Are they a team for the ages, or have they just not met their toughest competition? Also, who is the favorite in Class AAAA? I think that any of the teams in the Top 10 could be your state title winner. Ditto for Class AAA, which should make the next few months a lot of fun.

It’s also a lot of fun when you are living right and picking well. Last week was a 7-2 week, with Kell delivering on the upset special. On the season, we know that the guru of gridiron guessing is on his game with a 26-9 mark.

This week’s big one: The last time I saw No. 1 Tucker play in person, Patrick Pass and the Tigers were getting beat on a chilly night in Middle Georgia in the state semifinals. Not much has changed, because the Tigers remain one of the best teams in the state, but they face their toughest test at No. 7 Marist tonight. Tucker is undefeated against teams with a combined 4-10-1 record. Marist hasn’t exactly blown my doors off either, and the Tigers have won four straight in the series. The Eagles already have let me down once by blowing one of my picks. Gimme the Tigers in a statement game.

Honorable manhood: I took a big swipe at the, um, fortitude of the Kennesaw Mountain players last week by saying that they couldn’t win the big game. Give the Mustangs their due — they proved me wrong with their victory against North Cobb. Even though they have my respect and will break through as a playoff team this year, I still don’t think they can take care of Harrison.

Quick hits: In Class A, the contender to dethrone ECI could come out of tonight’s meeting between sixth-ranked Twiggs County and No. 2 Wilcox County. In Rochelle, Wilcox gets the check mark. … For so long, Parkview was the Gwinnett standard bearer, but the torch passed a long time ago. Grayson handles the Panthers — with ease. … Thanks to North Gwinnett for rallying and rescuing my pick over Norcross. It would be easy to pick Mill Creek after such an emotional victory for North, but I won’t. And Gwinnett still is the center of all things good. … There is some chatter that Alpharetta could challenge for Region 6-AAAAA. Don’t believe the hype, because the Raiders have been enjoying a diet of cupcakes. Meat is on the table this week. Walton rolls. … I like Sequoyah and the boys from Hickory Flat on the road to No. 10 Rome. … How hyped are you for Oct. 3, when Northside takes a trip down 75 to Lowndes? Both teams take care of business this week to set up the latest Game of the Century. … Upset special of the week: Things get messy for No. 4 Newnan in the Swamp as Creekside pulls it out.

Here is the question with Lowndes. How long will it take to get the motor running hot? Most of the state does not realize the impact of the game this past Friday night against Colquitt. I couldn’t go to the game because of a death in the family, but I did get constant updates via text messages and was able to listen to part of it on the radio. What I gathered is that Lowndes is GETTING scary. They made a statement against Colquitt and the state (Including Northside WR) that they are ready to play. Northside will be no pushover, nor do the Vikings expect such a game, but let’s ask ourselves one question… Since Northside has a huge winning streak they are fighting to keep, if the state were handing out bounty contracts for them, who would the first team picked to knock them off the pedistal? Lowndes. How big is this game! Two state champions playing on the same field. I hope that stadium is rocking on both sides. CBS College Sports will be televising it and we plan on a party before and after the game. Good luck Vikes.

I had the pleasure last year to travel down 75 to watch Atlanta’s Douglass Astros visit Lowndes in a 2nd round playoff game. For decades, I have watched HS football, I have not seen a team execute the wing t offense like Lowndes does. Their system is quicker and crisper than anything you will see. I would say only Camden is close. Having most of their top players return this year, I’d have to say the Vikings are for real. By playoff time once again they will be battle tested.

Hey Chris:

The clock is ticking towards the EAST invasion of Marietta…It would be nice to go 4-0 & 3-0 in the region…

This begins the 4 week “journey” thru Marietta, Etowah at “The Boneyard” and then away games at North Cobb & then the game HOYADAWG has his calendar marked for Oct. 17th at Harrison!!!

Without a doubt these 4 games will tell the story of how 5A AAAAA will shake out this year! I have seen many postings saying EAST will go 0-4 thru this stretch, I don’t see that happenning AT ALL…can they go 4-0? Hmmmm!!!…

In Marietta’s honor I can only say…RING THE BELL and let’s get it on!!!!

Oh believe me the bell will be ringing loud and clear Friday night at Northcutt Stadium in Marietta. I got a feeling it might be close but it will look and feel like we beat the breaks off them. I’m sure Coach Friday will have that Blue Devil Squad ready to go come 7:30 Friday night.

Lowndes in my opinion is the best highschool team in the country. They excute on both sides of the ball flawless. If you haven’t gotten a chance to see these guys play u are in for a treat next week on CBS. Greig Reed puts u in the mind of Reggie Bush

I would say that the only hope of beating Lowndes is Camden County…..I stayed to watch last year’s semifinal game….and both are fast as the day is long. Lowndes has a slight edge though. I still think it could go either way if Camden plays the best ball of their lives…..these other teams don’t stand a chance.

As I said on the other blog, cancel the season and give Lowndes the state title. Tift Co., you might as well save yourself the embarassement tomorrow night. Forfeit now! You don’t want to get beat by 50 in your own stadium. Why don’t we see if we could squeeze Lowndes onto the Georgia Bulldog schedule, I’m sure they have an open week somewhere coming up. Maybe the Dawgs can pull out a close one.

hornet - I thought so too when the season started, but now I think the 4 game stretch starts next week with the Eagles and ends with Kennesaw Mountain. The change in regions ended Marietta’s playoff run at one (a 44-0 loss) as they don’t get Campbell and Murray County any more. Marietta barely beat Cherokee at home and lost to Woodstock who lost to McEachern, which should make them about 8th in the region. And East had a hard week of practice after those turnovers last week. East 28 - Mayretta 3

Lowndes is the real deal. Even if we, NG, had of played the State Championship in the dome instead of their field last year. We, NG, still would have lost. They are not fancy nor tricky. Just hard nosed football at it’s best.

Homet, I would not load those cannon balls just yet. They beat so & so and so & so beat them does’nt always work in this region. I agree on paper East looks better than Mrtta, but Marietta is always good for at least one good upset. They are full of speed and skill players. Last year we beat them by 30 somthing, North cobb blew them out, but they beat Etowah, and mceachern.

If Tucker does not play mostly penalty free football against Marist, look for the upset. In a close game near the end where a field goal could win, we know who would be the favorite to make it. Go Tucker. Protect the ball.

Chris,

Tucker has already passed one strong test with their opening game win against a dangerous and underated Brunswick team. I think you’ll see the Pirates make some noise when the postseason arrives.

For the Tigers to beat to beat Marist they will have to play their best game of the year. The War Eagles have really improved each week since their opening loss against St. Pius, and are due against Tucker. Should be a great ballgame.

Creekside over Newnan - I LIKE IT! As a Creekside grad we’ve always been underestimated so its always good to see other fans thinking they can walk into the Swamp and win a game 41-10. That’s laughable, extremely laughable. Our defense is not giving up 41 in the Swamp. It’s going to be a close low scoring game and we just don’t lose at home. I like our chances.

Alan and Viking Fan: Final BCS rankings of the year has Georgia being denied a shot at the national championship game against USC not by Oklahoma or Missouri, but by Lowndes.

Homet and my EP disciples: Voice of Reason here, and I covered Marietta a couple of weeks ago in that Cherokee game, and they looked pathetic. They have plenty of athletes, so maybe the loss to Woodstock woke them up and focused them, but unless it is a different Marietta team than the one I saw, then EP would lose some respect if it is a close one. I agree that the real four-game stretch starts next week.

Drock08: would love to head down that way soon. Of course, I know that Newnan is a big favorite in this game (wouldn’t be much of an upset special of the week if they weren’t), but is it that far out of the realm of possibility for Creekside to pull this one out? On their home field? I don’t think so. Nine times out of 10, Newnan should win this game, just hope that tomorrow night isn’t that 1 time.

Maker fan: I love me some syrup. Hope to see Cairo somewhere down the road this season.

Fly on the wall: I agree, where are the KMHS fans?

To Truth: Creekside over Newnan? Are you kidding me? That’s laughable. And the D is not going to give up 41 points? Newnan is averaging 43 points a game, point blank. They put points up on the board. Truthfully, if Creekside cannot score at least 35, they may as well not show up. I notice that Creekside only put up 21 points on a Pebblebrook team that was beat by Lovejoy, a team that Newnan had a 41-0 lead over in the first quarter. I mean, I know you like your odds because you are a Creekside alum, but the facts are the facts. A Creekside win just doesn’t add up. I’m with the Cougars on this one.

We are bringing a big crowd to Fairburn tomorrow expecting another show. After the game you will see how good this Newnan team is. I really think Creekside has a pretty good team and will win atleast one playoff game but Newnan is on another level. Too strong too quick too fast. See you tomorrow night and witness the greatest offensive team in GA and the Swagg Defense. I really believe it will be a statement game for the Cougars. Newnan 41-10

Creekside over Newnan. you must be high.

Well, I have been doing an awful lot of cleaning this week. Maybe the chemicals are getting too me. But at least I have put down the crack pipe and walked away.

Tucker has already passed one strong test with their opening game win against a dangerous and underated Brunswick team. I think you’ll see the Pirates make some noise when the postseason arrives.

Brunswick? Really? Are you calling that a signature win? It’s funny because originally I wrote that I wasn’t that impressed with the win over Brunswick but had to cut it out for space constraints. The Pirates have played more than 11 games in a season just once since making it to the title game in 1999. I know they are dropping down to AAAA this season, but I can’t agree that they are ready to make a lot of noise in coach Floyd’s first season. Marist should provide a much stiffer test for Tucker.

By OT

September 26, 2008 1:39 AM | Link to this

Really. Perhaps Brunswick had something to do with Tucker’s win not being all that impressive. I guess we’ll have to see how it shakes out, but again, it wouldn’t surprise me if the Pirates made a run in the playoffs. I think you’ll end up seeing they have an explosive offense with a handful of very capable weapons. If Brunswick improves their rushing defense and special teams (kicking), I’ll feel very comfortable with the statements I’ve made. Also, don’t forget that Franklin Stephens first year as a HC anywhere was last year at Tucker, and all he did was lead the Tigers to a 13-1 record. I’m not saying that Brunswick & Coach Floyd will match those numbers this year, but a very solid season is attainable.

I didn’t refer to the Brunswick game as a “signature” win. I said it was a win/strong test against a dangerous and underated opponent. I also said that Tucker would have to play their best game of the year thus far to beat Marist, so that would probably allude to the fact that I think Marist is a stiffer test than Brunswick.

After some of the numbing defeats that Tucker has endured the past few years in the late rounds, a signature win to me this season would be a semifinal victory.

But I’m not an expert and will never claim to be. Rather, I’m just a fan that loves high school football. I appreciate this blog and your interaction with it.

By Chris Whitfield

September 26, 2008 2:04 AM | Link to this

OT: Really good stuff. I’ll give you this, you have seen the Pirates and I haven’t, and maybe I am letting my past experiences on the coast cloud my judgment a little. Brunswick is certainly due a deep run in the playoffs and now that they don’t have to contend with Region 1AAAAA in the first round of the playoffs maybe the Pirates can get it.

I’m not an expert either since there is no way that I can possibly see every team in the state play, but for the purposes of this blog, I will always claim to be.

After some of the numbing defeats that Tucker has endured the past few years in the late rounds, a signature win to me this season would be a semifinal victory.

Best blog line of the day. Now that I am off of my USC loss high, I retire for the evening. Back in the morning for some more give and take. Good stuff so far.

And, no, Northside-Warner Robins and Warner Robins are not the same school! (Just thought I would go ahead and get that out of the way)

I was at the Tucker-Brunswick game, too, and watched a very smart Pirates quarterback shred Tucker’s defense for over 200 yards passing. It also opened up the line for their running back to collect 142. Problem was: they marched up and down the field but had trouble closing the deal. Young offensive line, freshman center, but they’re ranked 10th or 11th in AAAA according to a couple of services. Keep an eye on Brunswick; they’ll make the playoffs and give somebody a big headache. So, yes, I’d say it was a good test for Tucker, and I agree that Marist will be much tougher.

LOWNDES is the best team in the state. They’re good on all sides of the ball, but it’s the DEFENSE that makes them so tough. No team will beat them solely with the run. That defense just doesn’t allow much with all the talent and SPEED it has. Then there’s the OFFENSE that you have to contend with. Lowndes’ offensive line is very good not failing to mention all the offensive weapons such as FRANKLIN,HUNTER,ANDERSON, AND OF COURSE REID So, yes i do believe that LOWNDES is the team to beat once again this year. And beating them will be very difficult for any team playing in any venue, rather be away from home, at the dome, or MARTIN STADIUM

Being a Valdosta graduate, I have seen some fine football teams over the years. With a child in the Lowndes County system, my loyalties have switched to the Vikes. I have never seen a team as fast and efficient as these Vikings. They are so well coached and disciplined that they are scary good. Coach Macpherson (sp?) has a brilliant command of this team. They execute for him on a consistent basis and should be feared. Colquitt County started last weeks game with an onsides kick and I truly believe it just made Lowndes mad. Colquitt was dominated on both sides of the ball all night long.

I really think all the AAAAA teams should cancel their seasons you have to be crazy to think someone can beat Lowndes or even come close. I’m sure when Ptree Ridge played them mighty Lowndes played their worst game and the Lions played their best game. Also thats why the NFL should have cancel their season last year because the Pats couldn’t be beat. The same reason USC has won back to back NCAA championships because the Trojans couldn’t be beat. The same reason why the NBA cancel their season because the Lakers couldn’t be beat. And the same reason why Oregon State cancel their game last year because USC couldn’t be beat. So the rest of AAAAA cancel your seasons and pull the basketballs out because their is no way anyone can be Lowndes. Please

Please

Chris Whitfield I played on that 1995 Tucker Team that was lost to Dublin on that Chilly night in 1995. You just brought back a horrible memory!! We should have won that game but it wasn’t our night but I guess the old saying goes woulda, shoulda, coulda. We always handle Marist though. All Tucker got to do is play sound assignment football and our speed will win in the end.

Drock08 don’t fear us….play us. But then of course you could blame not wanting to play us on the gas shortage. You are right us Vikings should be more humble when it comes to our chances of kicking butt every time we show up, but then again It is so hard to be humble when you are a Lowndes High Viking! :-) As they say “don’t hate because we dominate”.

NSWR will beat Lowndea if the refs call a fair game. NSWR woul beat everyone by at least three touchdowns if the refs wouldn’t make all those bad calls. NSWR would have won 152 in a row if the refs had made the right calls. NSWR rocks, refs suck.

I know all the talk has been about the lowndes institute and rightfully so, but that is why no one CANCELS games and the games are played. Having said that, keep the Newnan Cougars in the back of your minds. They are as equally impressive on both sides of the ball as NSWR but no one is talking about them. They will be a team that will go deep in the playoffs

Lowndes will have no problem with Northside because they will not make the mistakes Valdosta made. McPherson is a much better coach, and knows how to motivate his team. Tomberlin, well he likes to talk about what he is going to do.

To:EagleNationCrying Northside couldn’t beat an overated Perry or Carver by three touchdowns so how could they beat Newnan by three touchdowns. You guys have trouble scoring on offense with your below average QB. Look at the blogs this week your fans have no confidence in him. On the other hand our Quarterback Russell Powell who threw for 2500 yards and ran for over 500 last year is off to a great start this year eventhough he has only played 9 quarters. Over 800 yards passing 12 tds 1 int. With a cheating ref or not NSWR will never beat Newnan by 3 Tds. Remember NSWR is in big leagues this year. After Lowndes destroy you next week Camden County will beat you guys in your one-dimentional offense in the second round of the playoffs. Or Coffee beat you guys which is very possible and we can meet in the second round. I would love that.

Beat Carver 21-0 but refs took away 2 TD’s and give Carver a score. You won’t make it far enough to get crushed by us after swamp boys and East Coweta finish with you. We have #1 defenses in the state and can throw the ball against anybody. Russell Powwow get about 10 yards against us all night long, and that’s passing! Running will be negative yardage when Abry get aholt of him.

Hopeful we both win convincingly. Have to root for kenneasaw in the upset as well. There strong and can paly with anybody in the region if they figure out how to win. Etowah lineman sustained and drove the ball twice late in that game. Go Eagles!

Apparently Tift Co. didn’t take my advice to forfeit, so the massacre at Brodie Field goes on. Don’t say I didn’t warn you. Vikings fans already know your Blue Devils will be slaughtered by at least 50 points. Hopefully your kids won’t sustain any serious physical injuries since they won’t see those lightning fast Plowboy defenders hammering them until it’s too late. To EagleNationRising: Swamp Boys and East Coweta? Please, they are going to get the bizness! As far as Newnan and NSWR, three touchdowns is a laugh. you bragging about a 21-0 win the would have been? Like I said before, if you can’t score at least 35, don’t show up. And about the comments regarding the refs, calling out cheating refs is only the sign of a team trying to compensate for weaknesses that they obviously have. If a team is that good, refs wouldn’t be a major factor in a game. Sure refs make bad calls, but they are never to blame when a team loses or doesn’t win as much as they thought they should have. All that means is that the team was either not as good as they thought or poorly prepared. EagleNationRising, get it together and stop blaming refs.

Who has lowndes beaten? Seems like a little crazy to me?

Which would seem to answer your own question. How good IS Lowndes. We know they are good, but how good. I think everyone is in agreement that Camden has so far proven their worth. Lowndes is doing what they are supposed to do, and if they run the table in 1AAAAA this season, then we will have the answer to the headline.

Yep I agree, GOOD LUCK to ya’ll tonight & it will be a GAME and a half next week and be HUGE for the division if both teams come in undefeated!!

No doubt about it that would be an electric atmosphere between Etowah and EP, two good programs that are still getting used to all of this success, with two good coaches who have really turned their respective programs around. But first things first before we put that one on the radar.

By HeadEast

Big Pappi - Don’t really have a dog in your fight or Harrison game, but I’ll root for Etowah and Harrison. I don’t want Kennesaw getting up a big head of steam, we play them for Homecoming. I’m not sure we’re good enough for this to be a trap game. It’s more like a must win on the road for us. We probably have to beat Marietta, Woodstock, Cherokee, and one of the four tough games to make the playoffs.

By Jenn

September 26, 2008 2:39 PM | Link to this

Wilcat Fan-Lowndes has had impressive wins against the Ridge and Colquitt who has Camden played? Hoover? They are not the same team as they’ve been in the past. I try not to dislike any teams but Camden is not as good as their weak region makes them look. With the exception of 2003 y’all always lose in the playoffs. So the answer to your question “How good is Camden anyway” the answer would be: Not as good as they think they are.

We have won 34 in a row, would have been 49 but cheating refs in Statesboro gve game to home boys!
