AJC high school football predictions: North Cobb will fall

North Cobb coach Shane Queen really gets on my nerves.

Can’t stand his bald head, his spread offense or his team’s orange and blue colors. Mostly, though, I hate that Shane Queen and his Warriors were the only blemish on a week that was a 22-yard field goal away from being perfection.

All right, I don’t really dislike Shane Queen, but it occurred to me as I was making my way off of Highway 41 the other night to cover the North Cobb-M.L. King game that I have never seen a Queen-coached team lose. I knew then that I was in trouble.

But trouble meant an 8-1 week, showing the true picking prowess of the prep pigskin prognosticator. I’m stylin’ and profilin’ a lot prouder than the Nature Boy Ric Flair this week, especially after his daughter’s boyfriend laid out Naitch with a few chops of his own. On the year, the guru is 10-6, which would make me the Braves’ second-best pitcher on the active roster.

Back to west Cobb: No. 10 North Cobb has to find some more diversity in its offense. Quarterback Michael Emerson took more shots to the body than a UFC fighter. No. 8 Harrison hasn’t missed a beat with a new coach, but can the Hoyas figure out a way to stop Derrick Lott? Since I am not covering the game, take the Hoyas at home.

I “heart” Gwinnett: Just to perpetuate the myth that everything about the AJC has a Gwinnett bias, I intend to pick every Grayson game this season. Here is how biased I am to Gwinnett: Off the top of my head, I can’t tell you fifth-ranked Grayson’s mascot. But they are Gwinnett, and all things Gwinnett are good. Take the Grayson whatevers over Dacula.

Sweet home, Allerbammer: No. 3 Camden County can’t help its region schedule of Savannah patsies, but the Wildcats “ain’t skeered” when it comes to likes Alabama’s Hoover High, made famous by MTV. The Wildcats have played well on the big stage so far, and there is no reason to think they don’t remain undefeated.

Feel-good story: Had to be sort of an escape to get back to football after all Sequoyah and Creekview went through leading up to the first battle of Ball Ground in Cherokee County. A double overtime thriller had to take the minds off the passing of Creekview coach Al Morrell’s wife and the death of Sequoyah defensive coordinator Ray Face in May. Take the Chiefs in another close one at home over Hillgrove.

Down the sidelines: Why do we Georgians butcher Old World city names? KAY-ro justifies its No. 1 ranking over Thomasville. … Lovett is one of the few teams that can play Buford close. And by close I mean 24 points. Buford train keeps rolling. … Northside-Warner Robins is still dangerous but hardly the power from the previous three years in my eyes. The Eagles’ game at Carver-Columbus will be the best in the state. Out on a limb pick goes to Carver. … Let the lovefest for East Paulding begin. Now is the Raiders’ chance to earn respect. East Paulding beats South Cobb, but don’t bet on a rout. … Also, pick No. 8 Mays over No. 5 Whitewater and Marietta over Cherokee.

Who will win Woodstock or McEachern?

Todd’s pick 2: Who’s No. 2? Northside and Carver. The defending champs are No. 2, according to the pollmeister, but both are defending champs. Some game they’ll have Friday. Might go to that one. Northside will win and cover.

Who is going to be right you or Todd? I will take the eagles bc of their Defense. 17-10.

Well Chris…I actually for once DON’T KNOW WHAT TO SAY!!!…Thanks for the East Raider’s support, and you are correct, NOW IS THE TIME TO EARN RESPECT!!!…I have been saying all along 5A AAAAA is a whole new thing than what good ole 4AAAA has been these last few years.

I don’t think ANYONE is thinking the Raider’s will “rout” anyone this year. What EVERYONE in the RAIDER NATION does believe is…IN OUR TEAM!!!…

This team has already EARNED the RESPECT, and the following it receives from the packed crowds they play in front of at “THE BONEYARD” and this group travels great!!! The noise coming from the visitors section is going to be shocking!!!

Now if we could just “sneak” the cannon in!!

Nicely done Chris. Ditto on all your picks. I think Grayson will be a safe pick in the weak 8 AAAAA region this year. 2 games that records do not matter however. Brookwood and Parkview. Any given Friday they are dangerous. Luckily the Rams have them at home this year. Camden looks better than last year. They are beating tough teams early, they will ride this wave through a easy region. I think Camden will make it deep in the playoffs. I would love to see a Camden vs. Grayson rematch.

By SouthGARules

September 11, 2008 3:26 PM | Link to this

Chris: Grayson is known as the Rams. They should be the class of the region. The only thing that could trip them up is Brookwood. If Grayson can get past Brookwood (they have never beaten the Broncos) they should be the #1 seed from Region 8-AAAAA. Who do you like in the Mill Creek-Norcross game?

Chris is a genius, Harrison, Marietta, and EPHS are all good picks. I think it’s respect and a rout, although we don’t want too much respect for beating up the worst team in the region. The Raiders are still in the warmup part of their schedule, which begins in earnest in two weeks with Marietta, Etowah, North Cobb, and Harrison. Until then, Raiders Rule!

By Chris Whitfield

September 11, 2008 4:24 PM | Link to this

JC: Neither team has really impressed me, but I will take McEachern.

Who is going to be right you or Todd? I will take the eagles bc of their Defense. 17-10. Todd and I will have a texas death match to decide this pick. I didn’t say that I was certain as I am certainly out on the limb, but I will take the wrath of the Northside Nation if I am wrong and gloat like your annoying cousin if I am right.

eastbeast and homet: Before you starting thinking of me as the voice of reason in a land of confusion concerning the Raiders, here is what I wrote in last week’s picks, which were only available in the print edition: The record (for the record) was 2-5 with North Gwinnett falling as predicted and Harrison living up to my faith in the power of the Hoya. But 2-5 sounds more like East Paulding in the early part of this decade than the excellence in education that you should expect from the guru of gridiron guessing. Fortunately for me, the first week of the season wasn’t a region contest, so I am still looking for a top seed in the playoffs. … But a new week brings new challenges and even more opportunities for making East Paulding fans mad —- too bad they don’t play this week. Load the cannon, boys! (And do you use a half charge in the cannon for a field goal?)

who do you think will win the Etowah vs. Kennesaw Mountain game? I have to go with the Eagles in that one since they have had a knack for winning the big game in recent years. Kennesaw Mountain hasn’t. Until they do, I’ll bank on Bill Stewart’s gang.

To Chris:

I read last weeks “jab” at East that you took and thats OK…first off like you said it was “only in print” and NOBODY READS THAT ANYWAY!!!…

As for the cannon, sometimes all you need is that field goal (example the Rome Game) so no, we are PROUD to fire off a round EVERYTIME the Raiders add to the score!!!

and you had it a bit wrong…2 & 5 in the early part of the decade would have been CAUSE FOR CELEBRATION, many years were more like 0 & 10…BUT that was then and THIS IS NOW!!!

So don’t stray far and stay away from whatever Todd drinks, you will be PROUD to write about EAST real SOON!!!!!

Hmmmmm!!!…The voice of reason, I like that…you might just have a new name!!!

Homet: I think me and you and EastBeast are going to have some fun this season.

Carver will beat Northside Warner Robins. The Eagle have a solid Defense but Carver’s Defense will prove to be slightly better. Carver has yet to give up a point in 2 games. They held Tri-Cities to negative total yards last week.I will be there and it will be a great game between two powerhouses. If you like offense you better stay home. These two teams are going to bust each other in the mouth. The first one to bleed will lose.

Northside will take care of Carver, no problem. They have a great new running back and their passing game is coming along. They retain a great defense and solid kicking game. The quarterback is playoff tested and the coaches always seem to come up with progressive plays at the right time. Go Eagles!

“Gwinnett is always good.” LOVE IT!!! I’ve been questioned more than once about the AJC’s supposed bias toward Gwinett schools when civering games for the paper. Mt pat response - “Hey, I only go where they send me.”

Grayson os finally coming into its own. The Rams have been close the past couple of years, but Mickey Conn has built a good program Buford? Geez, the Wolves never rebuild, they just reload. I think you’re being generous with the 24-point spread. I like the guts of your picking Carver over NSWR. Ought to be a hell of a game tonight.

What do you think about South Gwinnett (since we’re biased anyway)? Norcross was plain lucky to pull out a 7-point win in the opener at Snellville (3 South TOs spoon-fed the Bkue Devils 17 points) The Comets QB has a good arm, and the defense can slobberknock with anybody.

Northside 28 Carver 14. The offense is coming along and the defense is already lights-out. If the game was in Warner Robins Carver wouldn’t score. I’ll give them some home-field offense. Not enough though. Close game until midway 3rd quarter, then the Eagles will break away.

Grayson team has alot of depth this year. I have not even seen #16 and say what impact he will have. Both of you Grayson folks seem to indicate he is all that. So that means one thing, Grayson will be better when he returns. Scary thought since the team looked unstopable with him sitting out. What did he do? I did not see it in the news like Central. Grayson has interchangeable parts and stick by their guns when a player steps out of line. Kudos to the coaches, these young men need discipline. One goes down they have 2 that can step in. And what I can tell it is the Junior class that is the backbone of the team. Lets predict tonights score between Grayson and Dacula. I anticipate a 28 to 7 score, in favor of Grayson of course. I also predict Brookwood, Parkview, Dacula, and South Gwinnett will win their first region 8 AAAAA games. I will be at Grayson tonight and tell everyone what I see.

By T.J.

Steve, South Gwinnett looks ok if they can get that running game together to control the clock. They look like they have some players out of position and that some of their Juniors and Sophmores look better than Seniors. I am thinking if South Gwinnett wants to win they need their best talent on the field. I can respect playing those that have made the commitment to stay with team but if you want to play to win, you have to put your best 11 on the field. They could be a much better team if they did that. Just my humble observation and what I hear.

Typo on my last post, take Dacula off list that will win. Oopsy on my part. Like I said, they will lose to Grayson 28- to 7.

Being a fan of North Cobb High School Football since 1974, I think it is remarkable what Shane Queen has done for the school, the community and the football program. This is definitely an off year for them but unlike years past, that doesn’t mean an automatic 2-8 or 3-7 season anymore. That just means no more 42-0 blowouts by half time. On paper, I think Harrison has a better squad. But, hey so did MLK. One thing I am sure of is that Coach Queen (and his great staff) will have their team ready and motivated to compete until the very end (just like their last 23 games)! What a pleasure it’s been to see them all. I never thought I would say it but, Go Blue (and orange)!

Reeze, Not sure of the name of #36 but I have him on a list to watch out for. He was starting LB last year Sophmore so we will see him next year. List of Juniors at Grayson is amazing. Standouts are CB #6, RB #24, LB #36, NG #94, and a wrecking machine #61. I would not be surprised if all the above numbers have letters to colleges already since they are starters from last years Elite 8 team. Those are just the standouts. There is another 7 or 8 players that are Juniors that I counted that get major playing time or start. This year will be great but next year, watch out. That is why I said the Junior class is backbone of the Rams.

Well CHRIS…

East Paulding made you look great with your support…We rolled into South Cobb last night and filled the visitors section, spilling out along the fence line to support our Raiders!!!

WSB TV & Bill Hartman were filming the game & East’s entry into 5A AAAAA play went even better than you called. After the “D” held South Cobb to an opening field goal the offense took over and at the end it was EAST PAULDING 42 —- SOUTH COBB 10 (they scored with 4 seconds remaining, our freshmen & J.V. guys played most of the 4th quarter)…

Hey Homet congrats on the victory, but I want to mess with you a lil bit. I am a student of the game of football—-middle school to pro. Hey why would you get all excited about beating South Cobb? Come on now…South Cobb!!!??? I looked at the region you’re in and yes I gotta tell you my friend, that is one WEAK region. You guys will probably win your region. But dont get tooo excited about what you do in terms of winning in a very weak region…remember its what you do in the playoffs that count!!!

A WEAK Region…Hmmm???…we got McEachern, Marietta, Etowah, North Cobb, Harrison, Kennesaw Mtn, Cherokee & Woodstock…that’s pretty much a handfull for anybody!

I don’t think anyone can call many of those teams “WEAK”…come on now!

South Cobb was only step one, it was a beginning…but this schedule is going to be TOUGH, hold the talk of winning regions for a bit…!!!

But I gotta tell ya…last night was FUN!!!

Ole Hoyagawg hasn’t been on here yet today, they came within 90 seconds of losing to North Cobb last night. North Cobb was driving and on the 50 when the Harrison “D” intercepted to save the game!!!

Chris, Chris, Chris, never pick against a team that is 32-0. Never pick against a team that is 46 out of 47. Never pick against a team that has heart. Never pick against a team that has fans so powerful they can will a field goal wide right when the game is on the line. Never pick against the Northside Eagles. Northside 7 - Carver 6. Sorry but your limb broke, hope you are okay.

By Chris Whitfield

September 13, 2008 11:19 AM | Link to this

This and that on a Saturday morning while eating a bagel and sipping a venti vanilla latte. Not much not to dislike about a 9-1 night by the “voice of reason.” Only pick that I missed was Northside beating Carver, but 7-6 score probably justified my remark that it would be the best game in the state. I guess that limb that I was out on in picking a Carver upset wasn’t such a shaky one after all. Todd wins the Texas Strap Match, but I didn’t quit or submit, like Stone Cold Steve Austin I just passed out from a loss of blood. (All right, maybe I need to lay off the wrestling references for a couple of weeks.)

Camden County continues to confirm my belief in whatever koolaid Jeff Herron is passing around. To go TO Hoover and put 44 points on that program is an accomplishment. Wildcats need to move up from their No. 3 ranking.

Homet, we could make plenty of arguments about 5AAAAA being weak this year, but I give the Raiders props for an impressive showing. The juries are still out, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the Raiders ended as the No. 1 seed or out of the playoffs. I’m just not convinced if Region 5AAAAA is really good or just really filled with parity. I’ll leave it to Todd to rank the regions sometime down the road.

By Disappointed Northside Fan

September 13, 2008 11:41 AM | Link to this

I love Northside, but I have to say that last night was the worst game they’ve played in a long time. I would say that it is the first game out of this long winning streak that they did not deserve to win. Carver should have won that game, and they would have if not for sheer luck on Northside’s part. The defense was horrible, the offense could do nothing all night, and the only thing that even looked impressive was the special teams.

By homet

September 13, 2008 11:50 AM | Link to this

Hey Chris: Let’s see what Todd has to say now & how he ranks things. Like I told Jaybo it’s way tooooooo early to start talking about winning regions, last night was one game BUT IT WAS FUN!!!

The two away games in a few weeks at North Cobb & Harrison are going to be tough and they will probably tell a lot about how the rankings should look.

A lot of talk goes on but this schedule in 5A AAAAA is still a tough run for any team!!

By Eagle Fan

September 13, 2008 1:38 PM | Link to this

Yes, Northside had a disappointing night. Much of it has to be credited to a very good Carver team that will challenge for the state again. Some of it must definitely be credited to the worst officiating crew in Georgia. However, when you win on the road against a #2 team even when you shoudn’t have, that is a sign of a true champion and a great program. Great programs also make adjustments to improve. Hopefully we will see that next week. Also remember that Northside’s last lost in 2005 was a game in which Northside was better and should have won. So it goes both ways.
