Georgia high school football: Middle Georgia teams are hot … and not

Middle Georgia high school football has so many good stories that we will need two takes to cover all that’s going on in the heart of the state. This week, we look at classes A/AA/AAA to see, as always, who’s hot and who’s not:

HOT

> Dublin: Like it or not — and some of their fans on statewide blogs make it hard to love the green and gold — Dublin is here to stay. Coach Roger Holmes has built the perfect system of being able to reload and not rebuild. Just go ahead and accept the Shamrock Bowl as your high school football shrine. Rashad Smith, a member of the AJC’s The Georgia 150 team, is worth the price of admission.

> Twiggs County: Ever since former Georgia Tech standout Tony Hollings graced the Cobra Pit, Twiggs County football has been on the map.

> Toombs County: Granted the two victories aren’t that impressive, but 2-0 is hotter than 0-2. The real test will come the next three weeks against No. 8 Jefferson County, No. 7 Dublin and Screven County - not to mention a Halloween meeting with county rival Vidalia.

> Southwest Macon: I don’t care if Albany is riding a 22-game losing streak, any running back that goes for 294 yards and three touchdowns like Southwest Macon’s Adrian Alexander did gets my attention. Both Southwest and Northeast Macon are 2-0. The high school world is changing.

NOT

> Dodge County: Let’s see, the school board fires Greg Robinson, who led his team to 12 victories in back-to-back seasons with region-runner-up finishes to Dublin. They bring in heralded coach Lee Campbell, who won two championships at Hawkinsville, and lose their opener to Southeast Bulloch, a team that was 2-8 last year? And Dodge loses at home?

> Perry: Losses to Northside-Warner Robins and Wilcox County are not bad losses, but 0-2 is 0-2.

Peachtree-Ridge may be 0-2, but…one of the best looking teams we(Lowndes Fan) have played in a couple of years. Expect them to go deep in the playoffs. A lot of talent on this team.

What about the Baldwin Braves…..Has anyone noticed what Jesse Hicks has done with a school who hadn’t had a winning season since 1993. I look for the Braves to go deep in the Playoffs this year, and possible when AAA.

Over the past 5 years Middle Georgia has shined as bright as any region in Georgia. Back to Back titles by Peach County, Northside and Hawkinsville. State titles by Warner Robins and Dublin among solid winning programs.

Nevermind Washington County, who just outscored their past two (GOOD) opponents 97-12.

You need to read the state wide blogs more often and you will find out that it’s not Dublin fans making you or other people dislike them it is fans from other schools trolling as Dublin fans. I know Dublin appreciates the mention but you can leave your prefudice, unbias, negative comments out of your reporting. You know report the facts and only the facts and if you don’t have the facts go in search of the facts.

Kush: Do you know that I lived and worked in Dublin for the better part of a decade? There are some trolls out there, but not every Dublin fan is a James Lanier or a Lee Foskey. Trust me, I know and I am not “prefudiced” against the Green and Gold. You won’t find a working sports writer in the state who has spent more time in the Shamrock Bowl than I have. The truth of the matter is that almost all teams have their bad eggs, but some Dublin fans are over the top

Samuel Veal: Gave serious thoughts to including Washington County in this list, and like I said at the top, there is a lot of good teams in middle Georgia. Since there are 15 weeks of this, I will make it back to the middle later in the year and fully expect to be talking about the Golden Hawks because their wins so far haven’t been against the big boys, if you know what I mean. BTW, you guys still put up grave stones at the House of Pain? Love that place!

Shawn: Baldwin was another of those teams, like WACO, that I thought about, but forgive me for still thinking they were in AAAA after this latest round of reclassification. Baldwin will be really hot if they win their next two games.

Yeah Chris that was a stupid comment about Dublin fans. I know James Lanier and Lee Foskey personally and the majority of the fans at Dublin are like them when it comes to supporting the team. If you want to go by message boards and fake Dublin fans feel free to continue.

Richard, Coffee County isn’t exactly middle Georgia. Don’t worry. I will get down south in two weeks.

How about a state report blog curse? Two weeks ago I put Bradwell as a HOT team and they have looked anything but. This week Dublin suffers from the curse. Treutlen is looking better and better, and I think the earth stopped spinning for a few seconds when Northeast went to 3-0.

What about Bowdon High School and Mt. Zion High School from Carroll County. Does anyone think they stand a chance to get to the playoffs this year if they keep playing like they have been for the past 3 weeks. I mean high scoring games and only allowing 1-2 touchdowns. Thats sort of a sign telling other teams that they mean business this year.

Whitfield you can come home any tme We sorely miss you, and now they moved Halcomb. We all have overzealous fans and the main thing I have againt the message board is the annonimity. If you can’t be man or woman enough to sign our name you should not be able to say it. The thing is controversy fuels hits and hits mean revenue. There is no way the board owners will ever change the format. Just my thoughts. James Lanier
