Around the state: Georgia high school football report

On our state-wide trek around Georgia high school football, we move up the coast to the CORE to take a look at the Central Ogeechee River Empire, which stretches from the Fruitcake Capital of the World up to Swainsboro and over to the South Carolina line between Savannah and Augusta.

WHO’S HOT

Statesboro: It doesn’t matter if the coach is Buzz Busby or Steve Pennington or if the featured back is De’Angelo Tyson or Nic Lanier, the 10th-ranked Blue Devils just keep rolling. Lanier had two touchdowns rushing and one receiving as the Blue Devils rolled to a 40-8 shellacking of Josey in the season-opener. Statesboro will be without the services of Lanier this week against Groves after he was ejected in the third quarter last week.

ECI: What more is there to say about AJC Super 11 player Washaun Ealey, future Georgia linebacker Dexter Moody and future Georgia Tech defensive tackle J.C. Lanier? Well, plenty, but for the purposes of this look, those are names enough. If ECI doesn’t win another state title it will be a disappointing season in Twin City.

Metter: It would have been easy to put Metter in the NOT category since it had lost 23 straight games coming into this season, and a 27-12 victory against Portal isn’t going to shake the high school football world to its foundations, but the once-proud and tradition-filled program is moving forward.

Swainsboro: Scott Roberts took over for a coach who had won nine or more games in three of the last six years when Shane Williamson moved on to Toombs County, but the Tigers got off to the right start with a 27-0 victory against Bleckley County. Swainsboro will face its old coach in the season finale at Tiger Field.

WHO’S NOT

Screven County: A 13-3 loss to Dublin in the Shamrock Bowl isn’t much to hang their heads about, but the Gamecocks have a tough stretch ahead with Toombs, Bleckley, Vidalia and Swainsboro all in a row in the middle of the season. Screven should get back on track against Laney this week.

Who’s hot. Region 1-AAAAA, the best region in the state. All teams won, highlighted by Coffee beating Ware County & Tift defeating Roswell. Valdosta, Lowndes, HoCo & Colquitt destroyed their opponents. Who’s not. Gwinnett County. In out of county matchups, only Grayson, Wesleyan & Buford won. Brookwood lost to Walton, Norcross lost to Camden, Peachtree Ridge lost to Harrison, Central Gwinnett lost to Mainland, North Gwinnett lost to Byrnes SC (they get a pass-Byrnes is #1 in USA Today poll), Meadowcreek lost to Luella.

LET ME TELL YOU WHY NORCROSS LOST THERE FIRST GAME TO CAMDEN AND ALMOST LOST THERE SECOND GAME TO SOUTH QWINNETT. NUMBER ONE THERE BEST DEFENSE OF PLAYER PRINCE KENT IS PUT AT strong SAFTEY and teams are just running to the oppisit side of the ball from where he lines up. Number two there running 3/4 defense wrong by spreading there line so far apart that the traps are killing them and they just can’t come up with a plan to stop the wing t. Three who ever is calling there plays need too come out of the booth and sit with the fans. all the wr are 6-2 to 6-4 and they just refuse to throw the ball at the deep or at the corners of the inzone when the get down the feild inorder to let there athlets make plays. there running there qb out the pocket the whole game . coach tell him to step up in the pocket and get out of his hand. They have to much talent to have had two games like they had. muloaf will win in division because of talent but when it comes to play offs he need to stop tring to adjust to other teams and play his own game make them adjust. Woo!!! i hope he do ruin this players I haven’t herd but one sound of pads on a tackle and that was the kid who made a big play a the punt team to give tham the win at s qwinnett Woo!!!!

Hey, I just have one question? Did we do Super 11 by county/area like we have done in the past?

Hey SouthGARules. First of all I’m not from Gwinnett. But at least they did play teams that were in their classification, minus Berkmar. Lowndes played a 3A, Colquitt played 1A, Coffee a 4A, NWR a 3A. Thats not something to brag about. I’m not saying Region 1-AAAAA doesn’t have some great powerhouses, but lets wait until they play someone in their classification.

And Tift played Gwinnet AAAAA. Prep-Sport Fan you are correct in that 1AAAAA for the most part didn’t play tough competition, but give us a break. In 3 weeks the real competition starts down here and doesn’t let up from that point on for the rest of the year. Let me correct that, it doesn’t let up until the first few rounds of the playoffs. Camden being the exception in those first few rounds.

Mr. Whitfield,

My only comment to you is… You don’t want no blue and white. You … don’t want none.

Oh, and I saw Screven and they will be good. I think they have Frankie Johnson’s kid at QB and he can scoot.

Graysonfan, I can not make it to Grayson game either. Only broadcast I found was with 1350am WNNG. Not sure if Atlanta picks that up or not. Did you see blogs on Poll talk, alot about Grayson, you should chime in.

Class AA Mcintosh County Academy smacked Class AAAA Glynn Academy last night 21-3 at Glynn’s home field. Not ONE write up or mention about it!! Every year you hear nothibng about MCA until it gets close to the playoffs, which they are almost always in. They did lose to Dublin in the first round last year but played them well as well as Charlton County regular season. They lost their superstar DE/LB/FB (Allen Bailey) to graduation last year, he now plays for the Hurricanes, and they are still playing well. How about some love for MCA, another South Georgia powerhouse!

Dear AJC.com online sports,

Please reinstate the high school page blogs.

I realize that the intention was to provide a forum for good old fashion smack talking, but some of the comments crossed the line of its intent. I also realize that some of the entries in the past got out of hand with the personal, demeaning, mean-spirited comments. But, by in large, the majority of the comments stayed inbounds. We, as your readers, miss this feature and want it back. It was fun to participate and see what people are saying on the other school pages, especially with a game coming up….the blogs would always light up with smack talk.

I know you are wrestling between the concepts of allowing the blogs and and censorship of the comments. My suggestion is that you make the rules of the blogs clear, i.e. no profanity (or alluding to it), no demeaning, personally insulting, name calling, or derogatory entries are allowed. Those who violate the terms, comments will be removed at ajc’s discretion. You have the power of the delete key and those entries that cross the line will be removed. Otherwise, let your readers talk smack!

I would be happy to submit examples of the kinds of comments that I feel cross the line, but I think its pretty much common sense.

Thanks for your consideration.

TJ

Added my two cents about the game. Lots of smack over there. Been listening to talk from a lot of my step daughters friends when they are over. I hear things will be a little different this Friday! Oh, and competition cheerleading is tomorrow for Grayson, there will be several families that will not travel tonight. Hope Grayson can compose them selves against all that racket/noise.

DeeDawg - We’re trying out a new feature — Free-For-All-Friday — where readers can talk smack, provide score updates, etc., online Friday nights.

We can control the comments on that board, so give it a try. It’s doubtful at this time that the team page boards will return. We’ll see how Free-For-All-Friday goes. Thanks!

You should take a good look at the junior QB from Lassiter HS in Marietta as he is on record pace for Cobb Co football this season. Hutson Mason, has already passed for over 1500 yards this season on 110/157. This is a 70% completion rate and he has 14 TD’s all in 5 games. I wonder where all the sports reporters have gone. One game he threw for 458 yards earlier this season. He already has colleges calling him. His parents are Kirk & Kelly Mason 770-926-4464 home. Doc
