AJC high school football rankings: August 25, 2008
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Let’s say Buford loses to Mansfield Timberview this week. Are the Wolves still No. 1?
I was going to ask the same about No. 1 Cairo and its game against Bainbridge, but it was called off due to Tropical Storm Fay. They should’ve played in the Georgia Dome.
But Buford, the No. 1 team in Class AA, is playing a good Class AAAA team from Texas this week in Texas Stadium. Mansfield Timberview, ranked No. 20 in Texas in one poll I found, will be playing in its hometown. Would Buford still be No. 1 in Georgia despite a loss?
Those are the kinds of questions we’ll be looking at this weekend. The rankings will face some re-shuffling after seven games between ranked teams — all from different classifications.
Those games should stoke the debate about whether one classification is significantly stronger than another.
Here’s the list of games between ranked teams:
Perry (No. 7 in Class AAA) at Northside-Warner Robins (No. 2 in AAAAA)
LaGrange (No. 4 in Class AAA) at Newnan (No. 5 in AAAAA)
Thomas County Central (No. 4 in Class AAAA) at Thomasville (No. 3 in AA)
Griffin (No. 6 in Class AAAA) at Dunwoody (No. 8 in AAA)
Marist (No. 10 in Class AAAA) at St. Pius (No. 6 in AAA)
Carrollton (No. 9 in Class AAA) at Westminster (No. 5 in AA)
Charlton County (No. 2 in Class AA) at Clinch (No. 2 in A)
I think the lower-class teams have a pretty good shot in every game except LaGrange and Perry. We’ll see.
In this week’s rankings (below), note that Norcross got bumped out and Walton moved in.
There are three games this week that probably will put the winner in the Top 10 and knock the loser out. They are Harrison at Peachtree Ridge, Flowery Branch at Stephens County and Brookstone at Landmark Christian.

Are you crazy Todd? Don’t ever bet against LaGrange - even though Newnan is a good team. LaGrange always find a way to win. Even if LaGrange lose - this will not determine LaGrange fate in AAA. In 2003 LaGrange lost to Troup in the first game and went on to become state champions. The first game is always a feeling out game. Just keep your eye on them as the year progress and you will see why you never bet against LG…never.

Todd,
I don’t know much about Timberview, but I just don’t see Buford losing. Btw, the same question about still being ranked could/should be asked about N. Gwinnett as they take on Byrnes(#1 in the country in at least one poll). Do you know if there is a website that will be showing the games in Texas Stadium like there was for Corky Kell?
Jim,
I was at the Dome for Walton-Brookwood. Brookwood looked like they will definately improve immensely as the season goes along. That defense was very tough. And the Sophomore QB will look like a seasoned vet by the time the playoffs roll around. The recievers dropped way too many passes. That may very well have been the difference in the game. Walton’s recievers didn’t drop any.

I’m going to say that Buford probably would drop with a loss, but I won’t guarantee it.
But I notice that Charlton, Thomasville and Westminster each are playing ranked opponents. It will be hard not to rank one of them No. 1 if they win and Buford loses.
And if T’ville beats TCC, you might see a pole vault into the No. 1 slot regardless of who else wins and loses.

When is Walton High School going to get the respect it so deserves. Case in point, Norcross was ranked in the preseason #6, Brookwood was ranked #7. Yet in a preseason game 2 weeks ago, Walton wooped Norcross. Then this Saturday in the Dome, Walton beats Brookwood. All anybody talks about is how Brookwood will get better. Walton had a ton of starters graduate, yet here they are once again competing in the highest ranked football classification. In my opinion, Coach Ed Dudley is one of the finest High School coach’s in the USA. He built up Buford High School and the handed the keys to Coach Woods. He the goes over to Walton and has built them into a Cobb County and State Powerhouse.

Calm down. Take a deep breath. The only rankings you or anyone should care about are the ones that come out after the state championship games. Respect is earned on the field. Walton was unranked in the preseason and now they’re ranked. If they keep winning, they’ll move up. There is no bigger Walton fan than me, trust me. I agree with you on Coach Dudley. Watching Walton play, you can tell they are very well coached. And it’s not just him, but the staff as a whole. By the way, it’s Dexter Wood. No “s” on the end. Have a good day and Go Raiders!

Preseason scrimmages don’t mean much.
Brookwood was not ranked in preseason.
Walton is ranked now. Norcross is not.

Hey Buford Fan: calm down! Buford would get killed by the top AAAAA teams. I watched them scrimmage Dacula (I know it’s just a scrimmage), but Dacula and Buford were pretty evenly matched with Dacula’s best defensive player out (MLB Skyler Richardson). Dacula is pretty average for a AAAAA team so don’t say such ridiculous things. We already know how much Buford cheats to beat up on AA competition and then refuses to move up in class when they get the chance.

If Buford loses to a AA team in Georgia, then you should drop them. Losing to a team from a larger classification in Texas means nothing. Timberview was 5A last year and has the numbers to be 5A this year. They opted to go down to 4A. They return 7 starters on offense and 7 on defense, not to mention one of the best running backs in the state of Texas. BTW, Timberview is ranked # 2 by TexasPrepInsider.com in 4A. This site does much more research on teams than any other in the state of Texas.

TODD, I must agree that the long shots are LG and Perry. However, both teams won their scrimmage against AAAAA teams in dominating fashion. Prior to the LG vs. West Lake scrimmage, I would have said that Joe Mansour could give the edge to LG vs. Newnan. Not any more. Granted, he could have simply had a bad night. His kick-offs were still impressive, as well as his one punt. But his place kicking could now become LG’s BIGGEST liability. Hopefully not. As for the game, I do not see Newnan driving the ball against the Granger defense. However, I can see the Newnan passing game burning the Granger secondary on some big plays. This one is hard to predict. The Granger “D” is good. The question is, “How good is the Cougar offense?” Guess we are about to find out. Regardless of the game’s outcome, I believe that this LG team might just be pretty good. AAA is the toughest that it has been in this millenium. No less than 15 teams who are capable of going all the way, and capable of competing against the best in ANY classification. 2008 is going to be a hoot!

I had Grayson fan jump me on last poll blog. I take back what I said about average lines. I watched game again on corkykell.com………they found a few linemen. That #’s 94 and 73 on the D line are huge and fast. Looks like Grayson recruited from the basketball team with 73. He made like crazy tackles via long arms. He looked to be the most productive with a sack, forced fumble, and some tackles. Noticed the other team scored when he was out. Number 94 is a freak too. Looks almost 300 and moves like a player half that size. I did not put down the O-Line too much, they scored 31 points. So this post is to say I stand corrected. Grayson should have a good year. Brookwood, they will improve. I noticed something though…the short butterball guard has the same last name as the head coach. Hmmm……..not getting playing time at the teams expense I hope.

A wet field tends to equalize teams. How well does LaGrange play on a wet field? Newnan’s field doesn’t drain very well and they had to postpone a game there a couple of years back.

Well the weather forecast for thursday and friday say it will be partly cloudy on thursday and sunny on friday so I think field conditions should be ok. I was worried that a wet field could slow Newnan down a little. I agree with Kew you should never write Lagrange off because of the tradition they have and also their coaching staff is very very good. Then when you have players like #2, #8,#16,and #17. I think Lagrange will make a run at AAA championship this year once the offensive line gets some game under their belt as well as Gunsby. As far as the Newnan game I think the game will be won on the line of scrimmage. If Newnan can block for Powell and Wynn I don’t see Lagrange or any other team stopping them. If Lagrange gives Gunsby time to operate it will be a long Night for the Cougars. I think both teams are talented and will have a chance of winning it all this year if they remain healthy.

If Northside was to lose to Perry, then Northside should fall out of the top 20 or more. If Perry was to lose to Northside by 30 or less, then I think Perry should keep its’ ranking. Northside must win impressively to hold on to the #2 ranking. Perry is a very good football team and should go a long way in AAA. Northside has a very good team with minimum experience on offence. The offense must put up the numbers here if they want to be taken serious in region 1 AAAAA. As long as Northside continues to win, every game they play this year could be the game of the week. They start with Perry, and then in order: B. T. Washington Flordia’s AAAA state champion, Carver Georgia’s AAA state champs, Valdosta enough said, Houston County, Lowndes County Georgia’s 2 time defending AAAAA state champions, Coffee County, Tift County, Warner Robins expect 15,000 screaming fans or more, Colquitt County to finish the deal. Put the time aside and catch a game down in Warner Robins to see the Northside Eagles play and defend their 30 and 0 record (44-1 over the last 3 years).

Todd..Concerning Whitefield Academy. Ok, TOUCHE’. From your view, I see what you are saying. But, I can assure you, that WA will be on your, “Wow, where did these guys come from list” by week 4 or 5. The coming out party will be week 2 against Athens Academy. Barring an injury, Trey Miller and this spread offense will roll up huge numbers this year in single A. All I am saying is WA will be the surprise team of 2008 in single A.

Todd - when are you going to open up the individual team blogs for smack talkin’ ?
Unfortunately, we had too many people misusing the open team page blogs and have had to remove them. Perhaps we’ll consider starting a general high school football smack talk blog, but only if those of you commenting on it keep the language clean and engage in good, old-fashioned love-to-hate-the-rivals smack talk instead of the flaming rants and, at times, threatening comments we found in the old forums.
We’d like to bring back some kind of HS smack talk forum but it can’t happen unless it’s going to be a fan zone that’s fun for everyone — not something that’s out of control where fans get personal and insulting to other fans. We’ll see how it goes. Thanks.

I am sorry Nseagle78, Lowndes will probably win that region because it is hard to lose alot of players in 5A and win, especially in 1-5A. Teams are going to play hard against top teams that is the reason why the #1 team changes alot during the season

*Y’all must be forgetting one game and thats Screven County VS Dublin its is going to be a rematch of the 2002 state championship *
There are a good number of games this week like that, where only one team is ranked but both are pretty good. Probably the best game I didn’t mention was North Gwinnett vs. South Carolina’s Class AAAAA champ, Byrnes.
Others not yet mentioned where we could see the ranked team beaten:
M.L. King vs. SW DeKalb (Hallford Stadium)
North Gwinnett vs. Byrnes (S.C.)
Ware County vs. Coffee
Tucker at Brunswick
Rome at East Paulding
Chamblee vs. Douglass (North DeKalb Stadium)
Habersham Central at Cedar Shoals
Lovett vs. Woodward Academy
what did you think about the tucker-stephenson scrimmage.
I didn’t see it, but one group of fans thought Tucker made some lucky plays, but another was optimistic that Tucker could be as good as last season despite the rebuilt defense. I’m expecting Tucker to be very good. Almost ranked them #1 until I remember how many starters left the D.

Hey Everyone,
Don’t forget about the New Schools at Carver playing on ESPNU this Friday, August 29th, at 7:30 pm. The game will be played at Lakewood Stadium. Tickets are $10 and are expected to sell out. Come support the best city school in Atlanta, and will soon be recognized as a one of the best teams in GA.
On another note, don’t be surprised if you get there late and NSC is already up by 28. It’s not going to be a close game. I think the battle between the bands will be a better show. NSC beat up on 5A Mundy Mills 35-13, and Mays struggled with an eagar, but overmatched, Therrell team winning 21-0.

It’s on…….It’s gonna be fun to watch all these folks jaws drop when they see the number of offensive weapons in Northside’s arsenal this year….True we lost a number of skilled players on offense from last years squad. They we’re exceptional kids ,good hands ,feet ,smart as hell on the field,…one thing they lacked was breakaway speed…..Not so this year …We have about four ,that with the slightest bit of daylight will take it to the house…..It’s On , in the last 10 seasons NSWR is 123-12 ,with 2 State championships(should be 4) , 4 state championship appearances and 8 region titles……There’s a good reason for this ,the best coaching staff in the state ,and kid ,the best athletes are from the Northside of Watson Blvd in Warner Robins….So why would you possibly think a move up to AAAAA ball will make a difference?…….Now Lowndes is a great team ,deserving of a high national ranking. If just so happen Lowndes and NSWR is undefeated come Oct 3rd,….It’s On…..it will be on,there won’t be enough seats in the palace to hold the folks coming down I-75…..And here’s something you can hold me to,….No way Mcpherson can run Demps and Reid both ways on us ,just won’t happen…Stephens of Tucker tried it with his kids,It worked for a half ,but we all remember the outcome.

first of all i would like to know where jackson got the total yards for the scrimmage between whitefield and bremen.it is true that whitefield played a much better scrimmage than bremen but those numbers are a little far fetched.
i do agree that whitefield should be in the top 10 simply because they beat twiggs co. last year and they have alot of starters returning.the miller kid should pass for alot of yards this year because he look like he has more than one reciever thsi year.

Drock08, Well spoken. Like you, I am concerned about the playing conditions at Drake Stadium. I have seen the Cougars lose a couple of critical games that they should have won, were it not for the field.(i.e. 1992) However, this game may may favor the Cougars BECAUSE of the turf at Drake. Newnan’s OL is clearly bigger and more experienced than LG. However, the LG DL is not bad at all. Both DE’s are very quick, and good at shedding blockers. Should the playing field indeed become a factor, it will hurt Powell and Bonner. However, it will hurt the LG OL even more. Our RB’s are small, but quick. Again, on a wet field, Advantage-Newnan. Same goes for our OL. This is a great rivalry going back for decades. Right now, I have absoulutely no clue as to the outcome of the game. But, as you alluded, it could be a nail biter, or a blow-out, either way. Wish the condition of the field did not have to play a factor. Maybe it won’t.
By slalom1
August 26, 2008 5:24 PM | Link to this
Drago, A wet field almost ALWAYS favors the bigger stronger team. Advantage-Newnan.Prior to artificial turfs in the NFL and in the NCAA, do you remember the concept of having a “mud-back” on the team? Same is true for the OL and DL. The bigger, stronger team almost always wins. The playing field has a neutralizing effect on speed. NOT size.

To: M. Holt, Guess you are aware that UK has developed an extrememly strong fan base here in LaGrange, Ga.(As well as in our surrounding areas.) The Newnan vs. LG game is ALWAYS full of surprises. Never mind that. Being from Kentucky, LG is your “Home Team” in Ga. Regardless of game’s outcome, you will be impressed with the play of Qua Huzzie, Tristian Johnson, Kobina Essandoh, and Demetri Merritt, all of whom are supposedly headed to UK. Should you decide to attend the game, you will not be dissappointed. Just so you will know here are the numbers of the future UK players at LG: Huzzie-2, Johnson-17, Essandoh-16, Merritt-6. I understand that Huzzie and Johnson are “done deals”, but it looks like Essandoh and Merritt are also headed to UK. Hope you make the game.(and, pull for your future “Wildcats”.)

Mr. Reeze, what you need to realize is now your team is playing in the best region in all of Ga. You dont just have to worry about Lowndes. They will win the region but there are about three or four other teams that make 1AAAAA the elite and your NWR team is going to find out what South Georgia football is all about. Welcome to the big time, you will be lucky to win 6 games this year.

I think Georgia Football Coaches Association made a mistake by showing Westside Macon and Thomas County Central in the lower AAAA tier in their pre-season prediction. Heck, Perry is not rated in AAA. We shall see come this weekend when it all begins.

Dawsig, Remember your words. I am sure you will. Except for you, all of the other Cougar and LG fans seem to respect the long time rivalry between these 2 great programs. Because of that, there has been absolutely no trash talk about this game, (until you came along). It has been all about respect. Regardless of the outcome of the game, I expect much of the same. Should Newnan win, their fans will show respect. Should LG win, the same is true. Afterall, Newnan and LG are family. Maybe you should think about that.

Reeze, Hmmmm. Maybe you have a point. NSWR and Lowndes, no doubt will dominate. Valdosta could be very good. Coffee, NOT. HOCO, NOT. That leaves Tift and WR. You apparently saw something in the WR scrimmage against Peach that got you thinking. So, what about Tift? And, assuming that the BIG 3 get the job done, who else in AAAAA has anything for them? Maybe Newnan? Maybe N. Gwinnett? Maybe M.L. King? What do you think?

There is another GHSA rule I was wondering about. a player only has 4 years to play football in high school, correct? As a senior if a player suspects they will not graduate in that year because of the number of credits they have or think they have, can they opt not to play their senior year and instead play the next year as they may have to repeat the grade? Of course that would mean they would be 19 years old in most cases.
What if they went through summer practice, was on the roster for the first game, and then finds out they more then likely will have to repeat their senior year?
Ive recently seen this happen to a player from my sons old team in Florida are the rules the same here?

To M Holt. I will give you plenty of reasons to come to the Newnan vs Lagrange game friday. Head Coaches Pardue and Herring have multiple state championships. The rivalry is one of the most heated but respected in Georgia. I probably heard more than 20 different NHS vs LGHS stories in the stands last friday. Both teams are ranked Newnan #5 in the state and is ranked nationally by Max Prep and PrepNation.com. Lagrange is ranked in the top 5 in every AAA poll in the state. There will be an estimated 10,000 to 15,000 fans in the stands on friday. So come down 85 South to exit 47 and watch a great game friday. Next I will preview the game.

Newnan vs Lagrange preview. Newnan offense that average of 35 ppg last year returns 9 starters. The offensive line includes 6 College Prospects(3 have D1 offers). The offensive line average size is 6’3 280 is led by Ga Tech Commit Ray Beno. Russell Powell who is in my opinion the best dual threat quarterback in GA led the offensive skill personnel. Powell passed for 2500yds and rushed for over 500 yds last year. Kendreas Wynn 5’11 195 the most underated player in the state has rushed for over 2500 career yards as well as over 700 yds receiving. The other two backs Nick Hill and Chris Robinson but have been clocked at under 4.4. The Wide Receiver position have All-Stater Alan Bonner and 4.3 Speedster E.J. Houston. The Cougars have size at the other receiver position in 6’4 Antwon Johnson and Zach Thompson. The Lagrange offense is led at Quarterback by Jammius Gunsby 6’4 215 who I think will be the real deal by the end of the year. Also the Grangers returns superquick RB #5 Salter. The Lagrange line is quick but a little inexperinced right now but will get better as the season progress. #9 Rodney Tolbert last year quarterback will be the playmaker at the receiver positon and will challenge the Newnan secondary downfield.

Newnan vs Lagrange Defense Preview. Newnan Defense line is led by 3 year starters DT Braland Geter 5’11 265 and DE Dustin Russell 6’1 215. Leland Russell 5’11 225 and Will Koran 6’3 225 led the talent linebackers. Leland is a four year starter and Koran led the team in sacks last year. Adam Strakose, Anthony Cruever, and Alex Ogletree last year leading tackler are three talented rising juniors. Jay Beasley 5’10 170 is a two year starter at corner and Jamal Ransby 5’10 165 who has superstardom written all over him is the other corner. Alec Ogletree 6’3 220 is the Free Safety. Alec has been offered by mutliple D1 Schools already. Newnan recorded three shutouts last year and gave up only 10 ppg. Lagrange defense gave up only 9 ppg last year is led by All-Everything recruit Que Huzzie. The Defense have two of the best Defensive Ends in Georgia Kobina Essandoh 6’4 215 and Tristian Johnson 6’4 220. Demetri Merritt is also a great DE/OLB for the Grangers. Also #4 Dowell is a ballhawking corner for the Grangers. Of note I think Lagrange and Newnan both have very good special teams. I am really looking forward to this game.

drock08, Pretty good, and I would say “right on the money”. The size and speed of Newnan looks to me like a Newnan win. Maybe big. But, having said that, the intangibles could be on the side of LG. NOBODY has yet seen just how good Gunsby is. As for the Granger defense, they seem to have matured since 2007, and never lacked talent even then. Just seem to have played looking for highlight films. But, the Granger OL has me mighty concerned. Very small, and very inexperienced. Prior to last week’s game, I would have said that the Granger’s kicking game featuring Joe Mansour might make the difference for LG. But after his horrible performance last week as a place kicker, he may be LG’s biggest liability. Kickers are known to be very mental. Hopefully he will get things worked out before Friday. If not, NO way LG wins. If so, LG has a chance. Regardless, having looked at the Newnan schedule for 2008, I believe LG will bring the best defense that the Cougars will see during the regular season. This game is completely unpredictable, but the edge goes to Newnan.

Slalom 1 , 1-AAAAA won’t be a weak region by any means ,just not as strong as we all seem to think.Yes Lowndes is the team to beat , especially If they pick up where they left off last year….Coffee surprised me against Fitzgerald.Don’t get me wrong ,Fitzgerald with Pruitt is a very good sqaud in AA and I agree with you on that it’s coaching ,community support, etc. that makes a program not simply enrollment numbers.Scrimmage or not, Fitzgerald’s 27 points to Coffee’s 7 is not a good showing against any team , A thru AAAAA……Peach Co. looked really good and manhandled WR in their scrimmage….WR’s defense looked good ,but their offense didn’t look good at all.I don’t think Brian Way understands that he doesn’t have the type athletes it takes to run his offense….Valdosta and Tift hadn’t seen or heard anything on them…..Hoco No….Colquitt No….even with their high profile coach,I can’t see them recovering just yet from the horrible season of last year….. Concerning NSWR ,This years defense may be the best ever here….The defense kept a potent Westside Mcn offense with Danny Madison and Orin Mcfadden under wraps all night during the scrimmage. And there weren’t any subs in.Varsity and JV games were seperately played….The kids on the offensive line are good sized and opened up some good holes…Our skilled players are gonna surprised a lot of folks ,As you know already the QB is adequate…Our place in region -1 ? ,can’t call it right now, we’ll have to see how the first couple region games play out…I know it won’t be 4th….As far as others in 5A……Mlk may surprise us , a lot of kids with good speed.

Reeze…even the weaker teams of 1AAAAA have a way of maturing as the season goes along..mark my words, by the end of the season you will know the difference in 1AAAAA and where you have been in the past. I agree with you on Coffee, it wouldn’t surprise me by year end if they aren’t at the bottom of the barrel except for possibly HoCo. Both have new coaches. Here is how I see 1AAAAA stacking up this year. 1.Lowndes 2.NSHS 3.Valdosta 4.Tift 5.Warner 6.Colquit 7.Coffee 8.HoCo. All South State Final this year with the possible exception of Newnan. I’m predicting Lowndes against the winner of the NSHS/Camden playoff matchup (which looks like it could be 2nd round match up)for the state championship. Wow! Can’t believe I’m making these predictions and the year hasn’t even started.

Yo…..don’t misunderstand me..Region-1 is the strongest in all of AAAAA , and I know teams improve each week of the season. I not counting Coffee or any other team out…Some feel region 1 is so strong that NSWR will end up 4th or worst ,I know you don’t see it that way ,I don’t either….. You are more familiar with the region…Ive only caught a few region 1 opponents over the past couple years against Hoco or WR … I’m not ready to make any predictions just yet….LOL

Hey Todd after Camden beat Norcross last saturday, what do you think their chances are against Columbia co (fla) and Hoover?
From the coaches I talk to, including Jeff Herron, I get the feeling Camden could have its best team since 2003, if not ever. Herron didn’t say that directly, but I can tell he likes this team, and so does Norcross after last week.
So while I don’t know much about the FLA and ALA teams except their history, Camden should believe it can win any game.
Did you notice that the coaches voted the New Schools at Carver the #8 team in the state? Did you notice that?
Yes, but I also notice that Heritage of Conyers is No. 4 in AAAA. Even coaches make mistakes. :)
Only joking. Carver should have its best team in ages this season. But I’m one of those show-me guys that wants Carver to beat a good team first. Mays would be a good start.

That’s a great game, but one of many. Winner might slip into the Top 10, depending how the Top 10 fares.

I hope I’m understanding the question. … Once you enter high school, your eligibility extends through the next four academic years. You can’t be a fifth-year senior. You can play this season if you’re 19, so long as your birthday is after May 1. This is off the top of my head. I’ll report back if I’m mistaken.

Todd I’m from Atlanta and played HS ball in DeKalb County. I now live in the Mansfield Timberview School District. The players in my neighborhood and on that team are no less than an image of the SWD players back in Buck Godfrey’s glory team days…..however, this team has more size and speed if you can imagine. Compare one of Buck’s worst teams during that stretch and match ‘em up against Buford and make your prediction. I’ll be at Texas Stadium and happy to provide an objective and non-biased game analysis if you’d like. I like to root for GA teams but this one in my new backyard has gotten better each year. The school is only about 5 years old. Also don’t forget to hype the bragging rights to the name WOLVES…lol.

EPHS, ya’ll must be pretty good from all the “smack” talk I heard from some East Paulding parents at the Dome on Saturday. I overheard one parent say that they weren’t impressed with Camden County at all and that if teams from North Gwinnet are all 5A has to offer then they should roll through the region. I don’t know what game he was watching but I thought Camden was one of the fastest teams on offense and defense I have seen lately and they were very good. I was impressed as was the rest of the stadium. One thing you have to remember is that “we” don’t play the game, the players do, so maybe we should leave the “smack” talk to them.

As a Camden County Football supporter I don’t even think about trash talking. Who wants to hear it anyway? All that matters is what happens between the lines. A lot of people think Camden is a weak team. They have the right to say whatever; however, the columbia blue boys will simply strap it on and play football. In the past 5 years, Camden has won one state championship and appeared in the final four 4 times. Those that want to talk smack please continue doing so. Camden will just continue to play hard, win games and hopefully compete for another state championship. GO COLUMBIA BLUE———YOU ARE THE BEST——GOOD LUCK TO ALL TEAMS THIS SEASON

Ok…The fun begins again…
Rome came to “THE BONEYARD” ranked #5 in the State and was sent home losing to the East Raiders, by a score of Raiders 10…Referee’s 7 and Rome “0”. They will however get credit for the 7 points, a FORWARD pass was dropped by the Raiders (in front of the Rome bench with the ball ON THE GROUND,the play OVER with players heading BACK to the huddle when a Rome player PICKS THE BALL OFF THE GROUND and runs to the end zone!!!
This “highly qualified officiating crew” runs to the end zone being “screamed at by the Rome coaching staff” and signals TOUCHDOWN!!!
All this occurred after the Raider defense had SHUTDOWN Rome inside the Raider 15 and was marching back up field for another score!
It DOESN’T matter what team was on the field when something like this happens the kids deserve BETTER!!!
We heard all week how that obnoxious Wolf Whisle of Rome’s was going to be sounded…all we heard at “THE BONEYARD” last night was the sound of our CANNON!!!
The NEW division 5 A Raiders start the season at 1 and 0!!!!!…It’s on to SOuth Cobb in 2 weeks (Bye week next friday)
Hey Jaybo…good to see you surface….So how are your “new look”, “new coached” TCC guys this year?

Northside-Perry game had me on pins. Perry clearly won the first half although Norhtside lead 14-13 (fumble/interception near goal. NS defense stayed on the field practically 80% of the time and got worn down. NS didn’t get a first down until the second quarter. All changed after half time. NS defensive back field has to improve to be competitive against good passing teams. Of course, this was the first game of the season—so all teams will adjust their game. What happened to number 1 in AAAA—Ware County losing 24-0 to Coffee? WOW! I did hear they lost their #1 QB for a few games alas Mark Ivory for NS last year. AJC will rank Tucker number 1 and Jaybo’s beloved TCC number 2. Good Luck to all this season.

East Coweta lost to Sandy Creek and most know that Sandy Creek has a well coached team. It will Take East Coweta a minute to get it going, with a new coach. Reeze you got to be kidding me. Lowndes is going to dominate this Region including NSWR. And yes Demps and Reid will do what they always do effectively both ways. So them doing it to NSWR will be no different from them doing it to any other team. Lowndes has too many weapons not to mention Tyler Hunter who’s name you guys will be getting quite familiar with very soon. They have a rock solid defense only with the exception of two new starting line-backers which we still expect to step up and get the job done. This defense has tremendous speed which other teams seem to underestimate. Lowndes just will dominate all facids of the game and that’s why I’m predicting them to go undefeated in the region again this year. Now don’t get me wrong, I respect NSWR for all their accomplishments and I do feel like they can compete in this Region but for Reeze to comment that Lowndes won’t be able to execute their game plan against NSWR is a bit much. And I will be holding you to your word that Lowndes can’t run Demps and Reid both ways on NSWR. I can promise you Lowndes ain’t Stephens of Tucker. Reeze your Eagles have moved up to the SEC of High School football and that 123-12 record is a legitimate bragging piece but it means absolutely nothing in this Region. Show us you can win in our region and i’ll be the first to give you your propers at the end of the season. You guys are new meat so wait and see what you can do first before you go calling out Lowndes. And yes, come October 3rd you will see what all the hype is about Lowndes. Hey YO we trying to tell him. For the night Region 1AAAAA went 8-0. Shut out the #1 team in AAAA. Beat one of Gwinnetts powerhouses. Beat a highly ranked team in AAA (Perry). Total of all teams scores was 1AAAAA-328 and the competition-54. An average score of 41-7. The surprise of the night was the showing of Coffee Cty. over Ware 24-0. Coffee may end up proving me wrong and the thought of 1AAAAA competition just got a little more exciting.

YO, Not surprised by the overall performance of 1AAAAA. But, like you I WAS surprised by Coffee. Also, a little bit surprised at Perry putting 19 against NSWR, and from what I have heard, played them a pretty tight game most all night. I am hoping to hear from Reeze on his take of the game. As for Lowndes, what did Coach Mcpherson do in the second half to show such mercy? Dress out the band? And, HOCO? Also a surprise. As a side note, the Newnan team I saw last night has earned their hype. Last night’s game will probably be their closest in the regular season. They are for real. All I have heard about is Powell and Bonner, and they are very good. But RB K. Wynn is a beast, as are all members of their OL. Do you remember crediting the Lowndes OL maturity during late season in 2007, as being the biggest reason for their strong finish? The Newnan OL is there NOW. I have said this before, but come play-off time I believe that Newnan will be the only team in AAAAA, outside of 1AAAAA who may have something for Lowndes. Any other year, this Newnan team would be my pick to go all the way.

Jaybo, Looked like an awefully close game last night against AA competition. What is up with TCC?

Whitewater is back in action! We opened last night at home against predicted 5B Region favorite Douglas Co. and sent them home with a 42-17 loss. Let’s not start tootin’ our horns just yet, but we have massively improved since the Newnan game. Whitewater overcame the size disadvantage with a great deal of speed, determination and intensity. Wildcats 1-0 and this I believe is only the beginning. Next week is Upson-Lee.

Great job vikings on winning last nite. It was a team effort that got the win. The picture in the Times Herald is a slap in the face of the word team. Touchdown club will take the we out of this team.

east paulding, you are 1-0 in 4A, you have NOT played a 5A game yet. why you chose to play down, I’m not sure, but it almost backfired. probally like your cannon will many times this year. here is the truth, like it or not. a good year for you this year would be 4-6. A great year would be 5-5, that would mean you beat at least 1 team that is much better than you are. the ep team is very slow in comparison.. to the competition you are about to face.

Hey Raider fan and Homet, thanks for the well wishes…good luck to Ep this season as well:)! Smiley ended up signing with Florida State, but had to go to a junior college because he didnt qualify academically…that’s sad because I think he was ready to compete on the D-1 level. Let me be the first to say that I dont think we(TCC) will be that great this year….we might make the playoffs!!! We simply lost way too much of our offense to graduation. Our defense will be pretty good, but our offense will be a work in progress to say the least!!! Slalom 1, you are absolutely correct, the game against Thomasville(AA) was way too close….TCC 13-7. Three things can be considered in this: 1)Again, we are not great this year, I would say we are just average. 2) Thomasville has a really good team with speed, speed, and more speed in the skill positions. 3) This is a county rivalry and strange things can happen. Yes, we are starting the season with a new head coach(Bill shaver) who was offensive coordinator for several years. So we will still be running the veer offense. Only two coaches are gone from last years staff…Ed Pilcher and Leonard Guyton, who went to rival Bainbridge. So the coaching continuity is not the issue for TCC, its just that we aren’t as talented this year as we have been. Hey NSHS fan, good to see you back on the blog man…Good luck to NS this season.

Slalom 1……….. Although NSWR won 38-19 It was a lot closer than the score indicates….Perry’s defense pretty much shut down NSide’s offense in the first qrt… Perry’s offense was rolling! , We had key starters on our D-line out with injuries and Perry took advantage of it… Big 320 lbs plus Johnnie Farms was crushing and pancakin our kids ! ,I see why he’s considered one of the best O-Lineman in the nation and a Ga super 11 , Jacorey Lane of Perry had 151 rush yards in the 1st half …. It was 14-13 at halftime, our scores came from an Int and fumble returns for Td’s and theirs on passing and rushing Td’s …..In the second half our defense woke up ,shook up their young QB ,we shut Lane down (18 2nd half rush yards) and our offense got going , mainly the rushing attack ,our new back had around 150 yds in the second and 2 scores our qb rushed for the other …..It was a good game for both teams to start the season off , It’s good for two competetive teams to play each other early to expose each others weaknesses , the house was packed ,a lot of excitement , the ref’s were too flag happy for me ,but is was spread out evenly ….Perry has a good team ,their new coach has turned that whole program around….I think everyone on our side of the field was impressed with their effort ,They just didn’t have enough to keep up with us the entire game……With Peach ,Perry ,Cairo and maybe Crisp now ,Region 1-AAA won’t take many prisoners… gotta keep an eye on these teams.

Jaybo, ditto for NSWR on lines 5 through on your blog. I love NSWR dearly but wouldn’t rate them higher than 8 or 9 at this time of year. Newnan or Lowndes seem to be the fans favorites to go all the way.

To: Slalom 1obviuos you may think you know about Dunwoody football but you do not. I guess the win aginst Griffin was luck or is it just Griffin is down this year. Whatever your belief it does not matter because Dunwoody is one of the best teams in the state this year and will show it week in and week out. Games are won by teams and not by single players. Dunwwody has a complete team. FYI Dunwoody played without their starting MLB and FS two possible Divison I prospects. Many of these young men have been together since the 7th grade and that’s how you build a team. Dunwoody does not need nor seek to be in the headlines each week to a assure them of their goal which is “Play 15”. These young men have clearly defined their goals and are out to meet them week in and week out. Come and watch us play or do what you do best take a guess about Dunwoody Football.

Northside Fan…….AAA or AAAAA Perry’s a hard hitting well coached team ,expect them to go deep in the playoffs this year….Just as any good coaching staff would do ,Perry found a couple weaknesses , took advantage of it , and rode it as long as they could ,Nix turned to two of his younger kids and shut it down….Northside Fan Dutchtown and Jones Co. are no longer on our schedule….We have 3 current state champions and a tough region to deal with….Yes , we’ve got to work for them now….. ,we’ve got a bunch of new kids in positions who can play ball, keep the faith ……with a little work they’ll be ready.

VikingsRule…I don’t know the schedules of all of the 1AAAAA this week to know who they are playing. I do expect the NSHS of the second half of last weeks game to show up against one of Florida’s powers this week. The problem is I don’t know anything about the Florida team to make a prediction on that one. Lowndes (my team) should win and Valdosta has the second of 3 cup cakes on their schedule, should not be a problem for them. Actually you make me curious by asking so lets take a look…Houston over Fayette, Warner over Grayson (a close one), Colquit over Thomasville (could be tough), Coffee no problem with Pierce Cty., Tifton over Brooks. Looks like Warner and Northside have the biggest challenges to keep it from happening 2 weeks in a row.

hello everyone. i just wanted to say that i went to the tcc and thomasville game and it was not interesting at all.tcc is in big trouble this year. next week they face a hungry cairo team that is out for revenage for last year.look for the weakness on the defense side of tcc. they are very unexpiernce this year. ed pilcher going to bainbridge was a major blow for them.

Warner Robins’s offense has to score points. The defense put them in awesome field position for the first 21 points. I think they have athletes, but I’ll be darned if Bryan Way doesn’t know what to do with them. I have to applaud the defense. They consistently made plays Friday night. The offense has to get it going to compete in this region.

To Raider Fan and Hornet: I was at the game and the pass was behind the line of scrimmage which means if dropped it is a live ball. The Rome kid did the right thing to run it back for the score. EP threw behind the line of scrimmage all night and it finally backfired. I also noted that both the Rome defense and the EP defense shut down the opposing offense. Neither offense put up a point. It was all special teams and defense. It was however an exciting game to watch. I wish you luck against South Cobb in a couple of weeks. They have a very good QB and it will be tough to stop them. See you at the Bone Yard in a few weeks.

DHS Football, I was INDEED surprised by the BIG Dunwoody win over Griffin. They must be pretty good. If I have said anything here that sounded disrespectful to Dunwoody, that was not my intention. As a matter of fact, I believe that all I have said is that “dropping down” in classification will not make much of a difference. Dunwoody’s win supports what I have said. Griffin is AAAA. Dunwoody is now AAA. The best team won. NOT because they “dropped down” in classification. I believe that as the 2008 season rolls on, you will see the “drop down” as I see it. AAA is mighty tough. Maybe even tougher than AAAA in 2008.

Newnan started slow last nite but took care of Chapel Hill. East Coweta took care of Mundy’s Mill in good fashion. Went to see Northgate take on Alexander and enjoyed talking to some of their fans. Very football savy fans. They told me it was going to be a blowout and they were right. One lady laughed at our defense, mostly our slow and little defensive backs. Northgate football continues to be held hostage by slow good ol boys and the TD club. The defense is beyond terrible, PTC football will not work against high school teams.Banneker will continue the attack on the mini me defense . The thunder heard in the distance is region play coming.
