Bainbridge-Cairo game called off
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
The high school football game between state-ranked South Georgia powers Cairo and Bainbridge, originally postponed to Monday from Saturday due to Tropical Storm Fay, won’t be played after all.
Cairo has canceled classes Monday because many roads are dangerous or impassible after the city got high winds and 22 inches of rain Friday and Saturday, said Cairo coach Tom Fallaw.
”I don’t think there’s anybody that doesn’t want to play, but if our school superintendent cancels school, it wouldn’t be smart of us to play a game,” Fallaw said. “Most of the time, you wouldn’t even think about playing on a Monday, but it was such a big game [that it was re-scheduled]. But nobody was prepared for us to get 22 inches of water.”
Cairo is ranked No. 1 in Class AAA. Bainbridge is No. 8 in AAAA.
The game was scheduled to be played in Bainbridge and would’ve been the Bainbridge debut of new coach Ed Pilcher, who left Thomas County Central, where he won five state championships.
Neither school has a common off week, so the game cannot be rescheduled.
Bainbridge will open Friday against Early County. Cairo opens at Thomas Central on Sept. 5.

No one is scared of playing the game, just can’t get everyone to the game. We still have roads washed out and homes without power.
It would be a great game, and either team has the talent to win.

I can guarantee no one is scared. I live in Grady County (Cairo) and teach and coacb in Bainbridge. I coached a lot of the Bainbridge players and know a lot of the Cairo players. I live near the major east west road between Cairo and Bainbridge. I got 24 inches of rain and this closed that road. There is a detour I took yesterday and it took more than an hour to go 6 miles due to downed trees and lines. Coming back new trees were down so this is called common sense. Scared? No. Bainbridge is still playing the last play of last year’s game and there is a lot of hard feelings and retribution coming from Bainbridge. Cairo is pointing to the score board and saying Look. See the score. Game over. I have coached for 40 years and I will say to anyone - If you have any more bad blood, more of a rivalry, more intensity, then you have something very special. Scared? No. I spent an hour last week talking to a Bearcat starter and he was so pumped he could wait to get on the field. I talked Saturday with a Syrupmaker starter (clearing downed trees) and he had the exact same attitude. It is in the eyes and I can guarantee that both young men were prepped and ready to go. Now, they are very disappounted and mature enough to know that life does not end from this situation. It was a wise choice, smart choice and the best choice. Scared - NO.

I live in Bainbridge and have worked in Cairo. No one is scared. Everyone is very dissappointed. It has and always will be that way between the two schools. Go Cats

Well i’m from Cairo and we’ve always been the underdog, but always suprised our opponent. I think this is Cairo’s year for the state championship. We are long over do. You guys say Banbridge is a strong rival now but lets not forget all of the 90’s when it was Cairo and thomas County Central, and as you can see we bet them tonight. Pilcher left to go to Banbridge Cairo’s going to take care of him there also.
