2008’s best high school football coaching hires: Pilcher, Propst head list
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
There have been 95 coaching changes in Georgia high schools since the 2007 season, plus another six schools hired head coaches to start programs. That’s 101 new coaches in all.
Below are the 10 most intriguing coaching hires of the off-season. Here are my questions for you:
Why were there so many changes for 2008? There were only 66 new coaches hired for 2007. Are schools not patient enough with head coaches?
Consider this quote by Wendell Early, new coach at South Forsyth: “A lot of times, communities and administrators or boosters, they all say they’re excited about building character and discipline and helping their kids grow up, but the bottom line is a lot of them really just want to win. Everyone always thinks the fix is to get a new coach.”
It’s not only schools looking for change. About 25 Georgia coaches moved to other Georgia schools. The turnover is most pronounced in metro Atlanta. In East Cobb, only Walton has held firm lately. Four of the other five schools have new coaches, and the fifth (Sprayberry) got a new coach last season. All have had at least three coaches in the last five years.
Here are my 10 top hires of 2008. Which coaches do you think will have the most impact? Did I forget somebody?
Kenny Barrow, Douglass - One of the top young coaches in metro Atlanta, Barrow is the coach who started M.L. King’s program and took it to the Georgia Dome semifinals in 2004. He had pretty good teams at Mundy’s Mill but never had a breakthrough. Now, he’ll have all the talent in the world at Douglass. He’s replacing Gary Cantrell, who took a job in administration.
Wendell Early, South Forsyth - Early put Berkmar in the playoffs twice in his last four seasons. That’s not an easy place to win. Now, he’ll have more resources and community support at a school that’s struggled the past four seasons and never been a big winner.
Victor Floyd, Brunswick - Floyd was head coach at Chester High in South Carolina and made the Class AAA championship game in his third season. His teams improved each season: 2-9, 6-5, 7-4, 12-3. Brunswick has no shortage of athletes. Remember that this was the last school to beat Parkview in 1999 before the record winning streak.
Kyle Hockman, McEachern - Hockman was 15-7 in two seasons at Campbell in Smyrna. Now, he takes over for a legend in Jimmy Dorsey, who won 219 games in his 24 seasons in Powder Springs. But McEachern was 4-6 in 2007, the school’s first losing season under Dorsey. More than 225 applied at McEachern, probably the most for any vacant job.
David Humphreys, Trion - Trion bottomed out at 2-9 last season just four years after reaching the Class A semifinals and taking Lincoln County to the brink. Humphreys was 42-8 in four seasons at Rome (2001-04) before venturing into the Arena Football League. He was an assistant with the Georgia Force last season. I’d buy stock in Trion right now.
Mitch Olson, Oconee County - Olson comes from California, where he won eight league titles in 21 seasons as head coach. His J.F. Kennedy team last season was 8-4. At Oconee County, he inherits Zach Mettenberger, the state’s top-rated quarterback recruit. He has committed to Georgia. Oconee County has been mediocre (and impatient with coaches) since winning a Class AAA state title in 1999 under Jeff Herron.
Ed Pilcher, Bainbridge - Pilcher made the most startling off-season move in Georgia this year when he left Thomas County Central, where he won five state championships in the 1990s and led the Yellow Jackets to the Class AAAA semifinals in 2007. There were rumors of tension with administration at Central, but Pilcher just said he needed a new challenge. Bainbridge, which went 9-4 last season, is putting tons of money into its athletic facilities and is viewed as a state power in the making. Bainbridge plays at Thomas Central on Nov. 7 in a game may expect will decide Region 1-AAAA. Bill Shaver, Pilcher’s former offensive coordinator, has taken over at Central.
Rush Propst, Colquitt County - The most famous and controversial high school coach in the country, Propst won five state championships at Hoover High of Alabama. He had become a star of the MTV reality TV show, “Two-A-Days,’’ which chronicled Hoover’s 2005 and 2006 seasons. Propst resigned after the 2007 season. There were allegations of professional misconduct, including involvement in a grade-fixing scandal, but nothing was proven, and Propst maintained his innocence.
Jim Showfety, Northview - The former Marist assistant was 12-2 in his only season as Chamblee’s head coach. Now, he’ll bring the option offense to Northview in Alpharetta, which has not had a winning season in its six years of varsity football.
Perry Swindall, LaFayette - Swindall is widely known in Alabama, where won a state title in Alabama at Daleville High in 1992. He was the defensive coordinator at Spain Park (arch-rival to Hoover High) last season. He’s taking over a Georgia program that has won only 26 games the past 10 seasons.
Kick off the debate: You’ve seen Todd’s list. Now give us yours. Which coaches top your list of best new hires? Are you surprised by all the turnover in 2008?

Several of the coaching changes came about because of school systems not allowing coaches to hold admin jobs and coach. This was the case at Douglass,Washington,Westlake and Banneker. I can remember a time when most coaches were AD’s or Asst Principles as well as coaches. What gives now? Great list, I would like to see what happens at Mays,Westlake, Douglass and Banneker with their new coaches. I have yet to hear if Washington has named a new coach.

What about Ed Koester, South Cobb. He took teams to the playoffs 6 straight years in Oklahoma and 6 out of 7 years in Texas before moving to Georgia to take over at Cherokee High School. Doesn’t get much credit for getting the program startd for the coach who took over for him. Took the program from 40 kids and only fielding a JV and Varsity team to when he left there was 100+ kids and Freshman, JV and Varisty teams. He should do the same things with South Cobb if given the chance to do his thing.

What about Coach Campbell being hired by Dodge County? He won two back to back state championships and was in the dome two other times in the 2000’s with Hawkinsville. Several of his players have gone on to play major college football and one is in the pros now (Charles Johnson. Campbell is from Hawkinsville and played for them. This was quite a steal to get him away from a long time rival and they will play Hawkinsville again this year.

Igor Peterovski - Locust Grove HS. This guy came from Siberia and his work ethic is legendary. He’ll put the Podunks on the map with his unorthodoxed style of play. Just watch out for the Siberian Express when they come to a town near you.

Humphreys may in fact lead a tradition rich Trion school back, but not this year. Trion just does not have the talent they used to have. Give him a couple of years though. He is a good fit for that school, if he sticks around.

Perry Swindall, LaFayette, The buzz is this guy is doing and saying everything right …. He already has the recreation center youth , Middle school, High school, and community working together. Money is being raised, And publicity is being made…. the little kids are as exicted as the moms and dads.
LaFayette hosted over 500 kids at a football camp, guests including Spain High out of Hoover
Perry Swindall seems to fit the Rayvan Teague mold a coach who was highly successful at LaFayette in his short time there…
Coach Swindall has coaching DVD’s available on the spread offense and is well respected among his peers in the South.
David Humphreys, Trion He has all the Trion folks as excited about Bulldog football as ever…. He is a really great coach and Trions new completely rebuilt stadium will not take a back seat to anyone…… It is a site to see. It may match the best small stadiums in the south…..
LaFayette and Trion are back on the right road…

Maybe these new high school coaches can instill some sense of responsibility and integrity in the players as well. Then if by some long shot, they get to play at UGA, they will not be getting suspended several times a year. Or not at all!

I wonder do the administration consider that with new coaches, there is a learning curve and this often hinders some kids progression learning the game? Is it fair to the kids bringing in a new coach every 2 years? That’s learning a new system and more often than not causing the program to decline. Just my .02cents!

Frank Hepler at West Forsthye High is probably the best pick up in the State of GA, he comes from a powerful program in South Florida (Plantation High) has many many players who are playing D1 football and will be a force to reckon with at this new school in the years to come..

Maurice Freeman - Won a state title with Brooks County in 1994 as well as a couple of other Dome visits later in the 90s. Is back with BCHS after almost a decade at Macon schools and Brunswick.
Freeman was on my short list. He’s definitely an excellent hire for Brooks County.
What about Ed Koester, South Cobb. He took teams to the playoffs 6 straight years in Oklahoma and 6 out of 7 years in Texas before moving to Georgia to take over at Cherokee High School.
I didn’t realize that Koester had that much success before coming to Georgia. Will be curious to see what he does at South Cobb, where there’s been very good talent in recent years.
*What about Coach Campbell being hired by Dodge County? *
Probably should’ve included him. You guys are on your game today. I haven’t disagreed with anyone yet.
Adam Winegardern, Dalton - He’ll be only the 5th coach in the tradition rich school’s history. At only 30 years of age, we could be hearing his name for quite some time.
He was promoted, right? I don’t know much about Adam, to be honest. Good luck getting keeping that streak going at Dalton.
another is that Greg Robinson At Warner Robins, I hear great stuff about that guy!!
Another very good one. That’s Houston County, not WR, of course. Robinson was outstanding at Dodge.
*Don’t forget Shiloh’s new coach Keith Wilkes he won 2 state championships in North Carolina and is an offensive genius. *
Because this state pays so well, Georgia seems to have a lot of assistants like Wilkes with great resumes who wind up being a head coach again. Lombardo was one at Wheeler, and he wound up winning a region title in his first year back at HC.
Frank Hepler at West Forsthye High is probably the best pick up in the State of GA, he comes from a powerful program in South Florida (Plantation High) has many many players who are playing D1 football and will be a force to reckon with at this new school in the years to come..
Another example of a new Georgia school that makes for an attractive job for people around the South, not just in-state. Hepler isn’t eligible for this list, though, because he’s not in his first season, although this will be West Forsyth’s first full varsity season.

Todd you are right about Bainbridge in the making of becoming a power house in the years to come. Bainbridge is hungry thats why you see them puting a lot of money into athletics to build for the future. Coach Pilcher is one of the best coaches in the state and if Bainbridge is looking for a coach to put them on the map, Pilcher will do it. Look at Early Co and TCC’s record 5 years combined before he got there and look at their records 5 years after his arrival. I believe he will do even better at Bainbridge because they are a one horse town loaded with athletes.

Nobody’s mentioned Coach Mike Muschamp at Lovett—he’s taken the private school to the state semifinals and the state title game in the past two years. He was hired out of Savannah Country Day School, where he transformed the tiny Class A school from having regular losing records to a becoming a perennial state playoff team (eight years in a row, including two trips to the Elite Eight). In many ways, it’s harder to do what he’s done because of the academic rigor of the schools he’s done it at. There are not many people who run a 4.4 forty yard dash or who are 6’4” and 300 lb. who also have a 1400 SAT.

We are thrilled to have Coach Frank Hepler and his staff at West Forsyth. He and 4-5 guys on his staff all moved from a powerful program in South Florida. Obviously it speaks of his program to have so many men pack up their families, sell homes, and move to Georgia just to remain coaching with him. He is truly concerned about the kids and immediately linked tightly with the local FCA people to make that an important influence on our kids. The detailed coaching is incredible, every thing has a purpose and attention is paid to the smallest details. He has tremendous contacts in the college ranks, so kids that have a chance to play at the next level will have plenty of exposure. The most important thing to me is that my son is getting treated with respect, is having a great time, and is thoroughly enjoying his High School experience with his friends. Wins are not the most important thing, but Coach Hepler is sure to get his share of wins with the staff and program he is building.

Rush Propst is morally bankrupt. The list of his outrages at Hoover is long and colorful. Let’s see……Having a family on the side while he is married to another woman and has kids with her, allegedly having an affair with a school official while married, allegations of grade-fixing for star football players, allegations of intimidating teachers that wouldn’t budge into changing grades, and another allegation by school officials that Propst ran off with money paid to the school by MTV for the “Two-a-Days” series. Oh, yeah…..Definitely a coach I would like to have teaching my kids about moral character and sportsmanship. You have lost your mind picking this guy as one of the best hires in Ga, Holcomb. Just another case of a downtrodden, but once proud program that is willing to win at whatever cost by hiring someone with no character.

Just fyi, Mitchell County has hired former South Carolina Dondrail Pinkins as its head coach. He’ll share the duties with Derrick Silas, who was a small-college assistant in Kentucky. I mention this because Mitchell County and Washington High were the last schools to hire a coach this year. They were hired late last week.
who is the new coach at harrison? they always seem to have a good program.i know the coach retired at the end of last school year.
David Hines, a long-time assistant who was Sprayberry’s head coach for a couple of seasons a few years back. That job got around 150 applications, but it seems that when a successful coach leaves, the job usually goes to one of his best assistants.
What about Tee Martin, former SEC Championship QB, who is now the QB coach @ North Atlanta High School? Also to boot, new head coach Brian Montgomery and Offensive Coordinator Walter Highsmith, both alumnis for Texas Southern w/former NFL experience.
I was talking about head coaches, but Martin did a lot for Matt Roark at North Cobb. Not sure if Roark should not have been the Class AAAAA offensive player of the year last season.

Except for the affair, the rest are allegations, never proven. I interviewed Propst within days of his taking the Colquitt job, and while the questions you raise are valid, I think he deserves a shot.

Long Time Packer- I couldnt agree with you more. last year’s 2-8 record is just unacceptable. CCHS is kinda in the same boat as the University of Alabama. We went out and broke the bank to get the best in the business but the one who is also the most hated. Like Todd said, all of those accusations were just that…accusations. He confessed to the affair and thats between him and his family. His record and championships speak volumes.

I can’t agree more about Rush Propst being a scumbag. I didn’t particularly care for him on that TV show especially the way him and his coaching staff would berate those kids. I’ll take nothing away from his success at Hoover, but allegations or not, he’s not the kind of coach I’d want to play for. And he’s certianly have his work cut out for him at Colquitt, especially having to play Lowdnes, Valdosta, and Northside Warner Robins. He might be successful at Colquitt b/c that doesn’t necessarily make him a great coach. Good coaches know how to go to places that have talent and can win with that talent. GREAT coaches not only know how to develop talent but also develop players as human beings. A guy like Rush Propst represents everything that is wrong about high school athletics: from un-ethical behaviour, to parents that pimp their kids for a college scholarship by moving them out of district, to corrupt principals that look the other way. I think it speaks volumes about our culture.

TODD, Could you clarify what the current GHSA classifications require regarding enrollment. Example: Region 1AAAAA…Lowndes-2740, Tift-1485. All of the rest are somewhere in between. In AAAA, Ware Co-1575, TCC-1499, Bainbridge-1645, Statesboro-1486, Chamblee-1395. The above enrollment stats come from the AJC.

Jim Showfety, Northview - The former Marist assistant was 12-2 in his first year as a head coach. Now, he’ll bring the option offense to Northview in Alpharetta, which has not had a winning season in its six years of varsity football. It may take Showfety a little longer than a year to turn Northview around. But look 3-4 years down the road and he will have his team at the top of their region.

YO, Like you, I felt that this must be a “typo” error. However, the info I gathered came from the AJC “Recruiting Updates”…High schools: Georgia, the southeast, more. I googled the Tift Co home page, but could not find any enrollment info. If the AJC got it wrong, it should be corrected. If not, Tift Co is “playing up” in a major way. They could be a very small AAAA school, or a very large AAA school. I am still somewhat confused as to the criteria being used to determine classification. Seems to be lots of disparity in AAAA and AAA. In AAAAA, even more. Lowndes may be the largest school in 1AAAAA, but not nearly as large as some of the Gwinnett Co schools. What do you think?

To: Slalon1…… to answer your question about Tift CO enrollment size. Their size may be missleading, because they are devided into two(2) campuses, 10-12 and just 9 graders. But all levels are counted as on school when put into class…for instance 10-12 has an enrollment of 1422 at present and 9 grade only has an enrollment of 549…. bringing that to a total of 1971 enrollment for Tift Co HS…this information can be found on the GaDOE web site…. http://app.doe.k12.ga.us/ows-bin/owa/ftepackenrollgrade.entry_form …. when there just select a school….the split school is where the mis-understanding many lie at AJC…. when looking at Tift Co.s school you will see all school and you will note that they have listed Tift Co. High as well as Northwest Tift Co High campus….hope that helps to clearify the count for you.

If John Thompson can get out the athletes at Berkmar he has a great caring team attitude he learned at Georgia. Young and inexperienced but long on enthusiasm. Give him a chance, he’ll have the best interest out for all the players, not just a few. A true believer in kids and team effort. Ben Corley at Winder-Barrow. Very intelligent, if he can get out of those “Bulldoggs” what he was able to get out of himself, then the W-B will be much improved. Don’t let the youth of this young man lull you to sleep. A veritable genius in football. Good luck to both, it’s well deserved.

Win or go home. That’s the rule for football. With Ed Pilcher as our new coach at Bainbridge High we should see a real good football program this year.I think these kids have bought into the program that he is installing real good. Getting Ed Pilcher as a head coach was a major move for us. Go Bearcats!!!!!!!!!!
