Classes AAAAA and AAAA: Todd Holcomb’s Super 11 rankings

Someone suggested last week that we do a Super 11 for each classification. Given the response we got to the all-class Super 11 debate, that’s probably a good idea. Let’s keep the momentum going.

Below are my rankings of the best 11 players in Classes AAAAA and AAAA. These aren’t official AJC rankings, just my own. And while I took the job seriously, I didn’t take three weeks to do it, so you might find me second-guessing myself. The rankings are based on all-state teams and recruiting rankings and comparing that to what I’ve seen and heard from coaches, sportswriters and fans.

Next week, we’ll spotlight Classes AAA-A so check back right here to debate my Super 11 picks and suggest your own. And the all-class Super 11 is still up for debate, too.

Just curious, but you don’t have Michael Bowman (WR)listed. Is his high school’s classification lower than the two listed?

Ridgeland is AAA. That’s next week. But I’ve got to warn you: Class AAA is loaded with elite players, much more impressive than AAAA and on par with AAAAA, in my opinion. I’m not saying Bowman won’t make that list, but AAA will be a tough lineup to crack.

Bowman plays in Georgia at Ridgeland High School in Rossville,Ga. They were AAAA but may be AAA next year. Don’t know for sure….

Stephen Hill of Miller Grove should be considered on the list. Caught 26 passes, 10 touchdowns on 20 yards per catch. 6-4/190 can catch anything out the air because he has over a 40’ vertical. He also broke the state’s long jump record at the AAAA meet this year.

Gonna be hard-pressed to find a Class “AA” QB/WR tandem than Drew Little to Jamal Patterson at Henry County. Even with Chris Jackson (Univ of Alabama) departed, look for Little to Patterson to put up HUGE, HUGE numbers.

4 Linebackers in 5A. I would think there is no chance that you would have that many LB’s in the Super 11. Historically what has been the breakdown of SUper 11’s by class? Do you try to make them even? Do you pick a percentage? Just curoius!

The so called “Rivals” ratings mean pretty much nothing to me. They are based primarily upon football camps, and place virtually no emphasis on academics. The AJC. ratings are more closely held and better researched. Based more upon performance on the field, along with the BIG picture. Unfortunately, some of our state’s best athletes are unable to attend high profile football camps. Some of them have necessary summer jobs. Others simply do not have the financial resources to mingle with the Rivals elite nerds. Bottom line is: Regardless of the Rivals ratings, when all is said and done, the top players in GHS football will be well represented both at the college level and later on, in the NFL.

Tamburo? you gotta be kidding me. he posts huge numbers against the weak competition gwinnett plays the last two years, but when he comes to south GA where real football play he sucks. he would have a hard time being a backup in not just 1-aaaaa, but in south GA football period

Colt Kennedy of Coffee (Douglas, GA) may make a list or 2 at the end of the year. 6’7 and 320 offensive tackle - started every game last year and got better every game. Should be able to play at next level after a senior year in 1 AAAAA.

I didn’t see Eric Fields on the list, Why? If Abry Jones is number two on your list than Eric Fields should not be far behind him. You might want to ask some folks that know Norhtside “D”. Mr.Fields might be the best(Davis/Tucker) linebacker in the state.

Glad to see Drayton Calhoun getting some respect. He’s a great kid. I agree with Guru about Eric “all over the” Feilds(LB-NSWR) being on the list,,, HOWEVER,, one on one,,open feild—— Jonathon Davis vs. E. Feilds = = Jonathon Davis would DUST HIM !!! Eric is very good no doubt,,, but Davis is WAY STRONGER and WAY FASTER. Davis coud run through him, over him, or around him. And on the flipside(after tons of ball carries) J.Davis lays dowm the HAMMER on Defence. Both sides of the ball at “take-a-beating” positions. Ask dem Northside boys about Davis,,, we all know that they know and you know that we know that you know too! Davis is top tier at RB or at LB

I may be wrong (somebody please correct me) but I don’t believe Lowndes has ever had a Super 11 except Randal Godfrey. On this list we have 2! Just goes to show Super 11’s don’t guarantee state championships. In fact most Super 11’s probably don’t win state championships. Teamwork is what its all about.

By Derrick Mahone

holla The beauty of the Super 11 team is that it is not tied into certain positions like picking an all-state team where you need a QB, RBs, OLs and so on. You try to identify the best 11 players regardless of position. I think the majority of the top senior players happen to be on defense with a handful of good wide receivers. LBs and DBs are the strong points in 2009 class. As you can see by my list, I didn’t have a quarterback on either the 5A or 4A list. Not to say their isn’t any good QBs out there, but I have other position players rated higher than the senior QBs. Todd made a good point in a conversion we had last week when discussing the Super 11 team is that the QB position is probably the most important in high school and college (and pros for that matter). I agreed, but pointed out to not just put a QB on the Super 11 for sake of it being a QB when other players may warrent consideration.

yo Lowndes has actually had two Super 11 players. In 1999, Jay Ratliff made the preseason team. There have been several players that have had the fortunate to being named Super 11, earned a free ride to college and won a state championship. The intent of being Super 11 is not to pick championships. The award “is what it is” an individual award bestowed upon a player at the being of the season to acknowledge his football prowess. A state champion, like you said is about teamwork, solid coaching, stay realitively injury free, ect.

DeKalb Football & GURU Both players are solid players in their own right. Jonathan Davis will probably be DB on the next level. Saw him as a sophomore at Pius and last year at Tucker and was real impressed. The most impressive thing about J.D. is he plays much bigger than his size. He has very good speed and is strong.

TigerFrom DC My answer to holla should explain why no QB is on my 5A or 4A list.

Derrick, thanks for the reply. I see your point - you shouldn’t have to pick a QB (or a player from any other position) if you don’t feel that they are “as good” as other players. Hopefully with DC’s new schedule (playing a couple of ATL schools) you’ll get a chance to really watch Caldwell play. If you do, I think he will earn your respect - it’ll be too late for the Super 11 but there’s nothing we can do about that at this point… there’s always All-State!! Thanks again.

Greg Zellner OL/FB of Grayson, covered Brice Butler one on one (of Norcross-USC) in the 2nd round of 2007 playoffs. Brice had 0 completions for the night. Greg started the season as a back up QB for Grayson. After standing on the sidelines waiting his turn, and many requests from the defensive coaching staff, he moved to OL and turned it on! at 6ft. 2 1/2 inches, 220lbs, running a 4.5 in the 40yd, a 3.9 5-1-5, 540lb. squat, 325lb. bench press, 315 lb. power clean. he is a force worth watching for, just ask the two QB’s of Shiloh last year that were put out of the game

TigerFrom DC Tony Caldwell was honorable mention all-state so kind of hard to say we don’t respect him. I think he is a good high school player that will definitely land a scholarship, but don’t think he is Super 11 going into the season. System he plays in will allow for another big year as far as stats. He has proven to be a good replacement for Ricky Dobbs (Naval Academy). In 2005, saw Dobbs and Eric Berry square off in The Swamp.

We have had some good responses to the blog and with a lot of names. Unfortunately there are only 11 spots.

Just a look back at last year’s Super 11 and hopefully you see the caliber of player we are looking for:

Allen Bailey, MCA, Miami - only played in one game last season for the Canes, but was expected to be a big contributor this season. Unfortunately hurt in offseason and might miss some time.

Eric Berry, Creekside, Tennessee - The AJC all-class player of the year was a freshman All-American and SEC Fresh of the Year by the Sporting News.

Morgan Burnett, North Clayton, Ga. Tech - Played in all 13 games, making one start. Had 57 tackles and led team with three INT.

*Rennie Curran * Brookwood, UGA - played in 11 games with five starts. Had 53 tackles, including nine tackle for losses.

Jonathan Dwyer Kell, Ga. Tech - Played in 13 games and rushed for 436 yards and 9 TDs. Listed No. 1 on 2008 Depth Chart.

*Cameron Heyward * Peachtree Ridge, The Ohio State University - Played in every game and had 33 tackles, 10 TFL and 2.5 sacks for Big Ten Champion.

Caleb King GAC, UGA - Redshirted

*Ted Laurent * McEachern, Ole Miss - Played in seven games

*Josh Nesbitt * Greene County, GA Tech - Played in 11 games last season with 339 yards rushing and 91 yards passing. Listed first team on ‘08 depth chart

D.J. Stafford LaGrange, Kentucky - Played last fall at Harmony Prep School in Cincinnati.

Israel Troupe Tift County, UGA - Redshirted

Todd, you should have a look at David Carter and Forrest Holt at Sprayberry. Most 5A defenses couldn’t stop these guys and I don’t see too many 4A defenses doing any better. I know Sprayberry has no “history” like some ofthese other programs, but perhaps you should take talent and experience into consideration. These two seniors deserve that consideration.

By Todd Holcomb

*odd, you should have a look at David Carter and Forrest Holt at Sprayberry. *

I don’t know much about Forrest, but I’ve seen Carter a few times, starting when he was a freshman, and am surprised he’s not more highly regarded as a recruit. I suspect he’ll be a very good college player somewhere.

re: Super 11

Good list by Derrick on how the 2006 team has fared. FOUR started as true freshmen — Curran, Burnett, Heyward, Berry. That’s remarkable. Yes, we’re talking very elite players for the Super 11.

*Its about time I see Myer Nolan get some love. *

I just saw him once last year and was impressed, and he was HM all-state, which shows he has the respect of coaches and sportswriters who saw him. He’s not a big recruit to this point, however. But he’s a good player.

most of augusta teams are 4-A teamsare any of these players worthy of mention??? People cry about south georgia not getting any respect but if you ask me, the augusta area is totally being overlooked.

Good point, and to be honest, I probably should’ve included Jerico Brown of Glenn Hills, a DL. But I had him in my Class AAA list because that’s where he made all-state last year.

Willie Burden of Statesboro High School and Daruis slay of brunswick should also be considered. for class AAAA

I thought about Slay. Wasn’t that his brother the linebacker several years ago for Brunswick? He was one of the best defensive players I”ve ever seen.

*I may be wrong (somebody please correct me) but I dont believe Lowndes has ever had a Super 11 except Randal Godfrey. *

And Jay Ratliff, 1999

Riverdale High Jammie Advincula OL tell me about how good he is.give some in-put I heard about him he is good he will be senior next year.

He’s not on my senior list of players to watch from Riverdale. Hope I’m not missing a good one.

Super 11 in all classifications is a great idea. With all the great players in this state each year, how about the Super 22 in each class?

Not enough time in the day. But we will be having a Georgia Top 150 in all classes later this summer. You heard it hear first.

here are better qbs out there, is tamburo who you would build a offense around? hes decent but not quite super 11,

I think it’s a mistake to judge Tamburo on the Lowndes game. Lots of players don’t look good in their final game, since it’s usually a loss. I’m not saying that Tamburo is the second coming of Zeier, but he’s got a dozen or more offers from mid-majors. He’s legit, even if his size (6-foot) is keeping the door shut in the SEC and ACC.

Stephen Hill (WR Miller Grove) is definitely a Super 11 pick. Nothing against the players you selected in AAAA, but there is no way you can tell me that there are 11 players in the classification better than him.

I know he’s got some SEC offers, so you might be right. To me, WR is one of the hardest positions to rate guys because there are just so many good ones every year in Georgia, at least in recent years.

Is there a list of the Georgia super 100 play !

GoJackets: Carter and Holt are good players and locks for All-Cobb County, but it is hard to rate either of them among the best in the entire state, maybe honorable mention, but if the tandem were that unstoppable, how was it that Sprayberry was a .500 team in the regular season and got demolished 34-0 by Brookwood in the first round of the playoffs?

sgafan: Really? Regions 1 and 2 get no respect? Really? I see plenty of names on both lists from those regions. And if you want respect, earn some respect because you are right, besides Camden County, NO ONE respects Region 3.

Why not Euclid Cummings from centennial? He had a stellar season last year in his first year of organized football. Also, he’s been offered by South Carolina, Tennessee, Georgia Tech, Maryland, Middle Tennessee, North Carolina, and a few more. Auburn and Georgia are also very interested.

Coach Shep In regards to Stephen Hil, hel could prove after a year or two in college to be the best WR in the state’s 2009 class. He definitely has the height (6-foot-4) and speed. Will probably add another 15-20 pounds in a college conditioning program. Last season he definitely played in a strong region (Region 6-AAAA) against several D-1 caliber players. Would like to have seen him have a big game against one of those better teams. He had 24 receptions for 500 yards and eight touchdowns, unfortunately, 16 receptions, 309 yards and six touchdowns came against the likes of Stone Mountain, North Springs, Lakeside and St. Pius, which was the only of those to have a winning record. Stephen will be a strong consideration for the DeKalb/City Super 11 team that comes out in August.

By TigerFrom DC

Derrick thanks again for your time - I value your feedback. Respectfully, I do think that Caldwell could stand up to most of the 2006 players you listed - obviously Eric Berry is SuperHuman so maybe not him!! Since Tony is not the prototypical QB he will (most likely) not land any ACC/SEC offers but that’s ok because he will end up at a GREAT school where he fits into the system.

Regarding All-State HM: I definitely appreciate the recognition. Those that have taken the time to watch him play know that he is worthy. He will post better stats this year against bigger competition so hopefully he’ll make the All-State list again for 2008.

Regarding Super 11: I never expected that he’d actually make it into the final 2007 group just because of his size and the fact that most people have never seen him play but it doesn’t hurt to throw his name out there - he deserves to be considered…

Anyway, hope to see you at a game or 2 this year!!

Great to see Dekalb again making a comeback with some talent. Been dry the last couple of years (Tucker had a good year last year). But overall, not a lot of statewide PR. Still think there are some unknowns in DC. But congrats to Warren Norman, Nigel Mitchell-Thornton, Jonathan Davis, Drayton Calhoun and Joel Kight. I know they all probably won’t make it. Mitchell-Thornton looks like he has the most big offers but Drayton has signed with LSU the national champions. Joel Kight and Jonathan not that many offers but probably can make it as a RB. Congratulations Yall!!!!!!!!!!!!!

DeKalb Dominance Actually Josh Jarboe was a Super 11 last season. Since 1985, there has been at least one player from the county to make the last except 2006, 2004 and 1997. In 1985 (the first year), DeKalb had four players the most it has ever had. In 1988 there were three . In 1999, ‘95 and ‘94 there were two players.

warren norman desevres to be on the final super 11 list todd. the kid rushed for 1600 yards last year, scored 27 touchdowns rushing, 2 receiving and averaged 9.3 yards per carry. the kid can not only run the ball but he can throw it too. He’s got offers from Tech and other schools and has many more to come since many SEC and ACC school are showing great interest in him. The kid is all state and he will be playing in the U.S. army all american bowl. now tell me that isn’t super 11 material.

Derek & Dekalb Football

Thanks, for the feed back. I love Jonathan Davis. Pound for pound, I think he’s the best football player in the state. I don’t care about his height either. If you can play, you can play, and boy can he play.

Eric Fields is about 6’2 205 and runs like a deer. He is a very athletic kid and will knock your head off. He reminds me of a guy I use to play with; Raynoch Thompson. I just can’t see him not being on this list, especially for the fact that he has already committed to Clemson and his 2 championship rings aren’t shabby either.

Is the Super 11 of all class going to be in the newspaper.

Yes. It’s typically published the Sunday before the first games in August. One of the best features of the Super 11 is the photography, by the way. It’s become a nice tradition to see what our photography staff comes up with.

Arbry Jones - Arguably the best prospect in GA Jarvis Jones - Great front runner but was not effective in championship game, a boat load of offers Washaun Ealey - Great stats, weak class, Greg Reid - Great program, plays top talent Jonathan Davis - good player, small and will he qualify, not a lot of offers Nigel Mitchell-Thornton - Comes from LB University, 16+ sacks as a sophmore Joel Kight - started since freshman, Defensive Player of the Year, small and not many offers. Kevin Minter - good player, been in the spotlight since transfering to PR from SHiloh. Good Move. Eric Fields - Yes another linebacker, but will he end up in juco.

Watch out for a manchild name Isaiah Cook only in the 11th grade at Southwest Dekalb HS small in stature but has heart. He is a beast on the gridiron and will post big numbers on defense. Lookout he is under radar but will be on everyones wish list next year. Just call him QUIET STORM.

TODD…WHAT THIS THING YOU HAVE FOR Michael Tamburo OF NORTH GWINNETT? SINCE NORCROSS HAS BEAT THEM FOR THE LAST TWO YEARS AND THEREFORE HAVE WON THE REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP OVER NG FOR THOSE TWO YRS, I AM NOT SOLD ON MICHAEL’S ABILITY TO WIN THE BIG GAMES.

ALSO, DERRICK YOU HAVE IT RIGHT TO INCLUDE DJ ADAMS WHO WILL IMPRESS EVERYONE BY RUNNING FOR OVER 2,000 YARDS AND SORCING OVER 15 TOUCHDOWNS.

I personally think coaching has a great deal to do with the overall development of great super 11 athletes. I am certain there are numerous great coaches in the state;however, Coach Jeff Herron and his staff always find a way to win. Does Camden have players that should be on the super eleven list? I think so; however, if there were a list for super 11 coaches, Camden would have several coaches listed. As in the past, we will play with what we have and continue to see our players sign scholarships. I look forward to another great season. One thing I know for certain, the little program in the souteast corner of Georgia will certainly be as prepared. Congratulations to all that were selected as super 11 players. I am certain all of you are very deserving of the honor of being selected. As a Wildcat fan, I look forward to another great season. Thanks to all the great Camden coaches as well as players.

You may not have heard of them but you certainly will. Jon Lee and Chaun Gresham from Apalachee Highschool in Winder Georgia. Both are D-1 prospects. Jon coming off his sophmore year ran for 1105 yards and 10 TDs and almost 2000 all-purpose yards. And Gresham a commit to Georgia Tech had 112 total tackles last season..Like I said you may not have heard of them yet…But you definetly will!
