Who makes your 2008 AJC Super 11 squad?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
During the next three weeks, our staff will select the AJC’s 24th annual Super 11 football team.
We won’t announce the team until August, but we’ll have a tentative list of 11 in hand about a month before publication.
With the advent of the Extra Point blog, I want to do something different this year: Ask your opinion. Who do you think the Super 11 should be? Hot or Not photos: Vote for your Super 11 picks!
To get you thinking about it, let’s review a group of 11 that I mentioned in January. I’ve changed my mind on some of these guys. Let me know what you think.
• QB Zach Mettenberger, Oconee County: He’s a Top 100 recruit nationally by most accounts, but is he proven as a high school player? I want big-time recruits, but I also want guys who have been exceptional high school players before their senior seasons. The more I think about, the less I’m sure that Mettenberger fits that description, or that a “project” should be Super 11, no matter how he projects at the next level.
• QB/DB Rashard Smith, Dublin: Smith was The Associated Press defensive player of the year in Class AA, a phenomenal athlete, but I haven’t heard much from him on the recruiting front. He might be a tough sell now for the Super 11. What’s his story?
• QB Michael Tamburo, North Gwinnett: All-state first team as a junior in Class AAAAA, but no major offers. The opposite of Mettenberger, Tamburo might be another tough sell at this point, surprisingly.
• RB Washaun Ealey, ECI: Master Lock.
• WR Danny Madison, Westside-Macon: Made all-state as a junior, but few major offers yet. Jamal Patterson of Henry County is the highest-rated wide receiver, according to Scout.com. Madison’s Super 11 stock has fallen. Who are the best wide receivers?
• OL Andre Harris, Lovejoy: He has committed to Auburn since the January list. He was Rivals’ top-rated Georgia lineman in January. Scout now has Chris Burnette of LaGrange (a Georgia commit) and Johnnie Farms of Perry higher. It’s hard to know who’s a good lineman, unless you’re trying to get around him.
• DT Abry Jones, Northside-Warner Robins: Jones was all-state for a state championship team, and then he got his pick among virtually an ACC or SEC school, settling on Georgia. I can’t see him not making it.
• LB/RB Jonathan Davis, Tucker: Another all-state player. By the way, it’s not easy to make all-state as a junior. If you do it, you’re special. Media types and coaches favor seniors for those honors. Davis has a ton of college offers. He’s looking good.
• LB Jarvis Jones, Carver-Columbus: I’d put him in the Abry Jones category, another all-state guy for a state championship team. I figure he’ll be a terrific college player with his size.
• LB Joel Kight, M.L. King: The Class AAAAA defensive player of the year as a junior. No ACC or SEC offers. I don’t care, though. This guy can play.
• DB/RB Greg Reid, Lowndes: His team’s best player, committed to Florida, where he’ll likely play cornerback. There’s nothing not to like.
Kick off the debate: Who do you think should be on the AJC’s Super 11 team and why? Let us know what you think.

So is this the “AJC Super 11” or the “AJC Super 11 by Scout.com”?
If these guys dominate and are known performers at the Georgia highschool level then I don’t see where Scout.com or major college offers figures into the equation.
If you are basing your decisions on other people’s reviews of the players then its really not your Super 11…correct?
Try doing a little more than cherry picking from other rating lists…

Agreed on both Mettenburger and Tamburo.
I personally think Tamburo is outstanding and should make the super 11 based on versatility production and grasp of the spread offense but his size will hamper his offers. Mettenburger is the opposite. Tremendous size and physical skills but lackluster production and inability to raise his team (as of yet) to success in the playoffs. They should have taken care of buisiness against Apalachee and simply didn’t.

Michael Gilliard - linebacker at Valdosta High School and UGA committment should get a strong look if you are basing it off what he has already done - more than 100 hundred tackles as a sophomore and a junior each season. Coach Tomberlin says he is the best he as coached including Takeo Spikes. Gilliard is a heat seeking missle that has already proven himself.

If these guys dominate and are known performers at the Georgia highschool level then I don’t see where Scout.com or major college offers figures into the equation.
I think the Super 11 should be a combination — outstanding in high school, coveted by major college teams, the best of both.
The Super 11 historically has leaned toward the state’s ”most wanted,” although that sometimes depended on who was doing the choosing in a particular year.
As far as Scout.com and recruiting services, they’ll make someone a 4-star or even a 5-star based primarily on the player’s work in a combine or showcase. But I don’t endorse those kinds of players for our Super 11.
An example last season might’ve been Cornelius Washington of Burke County. He was consensus Top 10 in Georgia by the recruiting services but not AJC Super 11 because we didn’t feel he’d done enough as a high school player. That doesn’t mean he won’t be All-SEC at Georgia.

Kevin M Branden Smith is one of the ones I’m pushing hard for the list alone with Darren Myles Jr. I think they both deserve it and a solid resume to back it up.
CRB This is the AJC list and like in the past, we consult with others like opposing coaches, the players coach and the various recruiting services. This is a combination of identifying who we feel are the best 11 players coming into the season and college offers are a big part of it. By spring, most of (if not all) the top players in the state will have offers from colleges.

I agree on Dallas Lee of Buford and how about Cody Getz too? But I gotta have a Walton Raider in there: David Paulsen. ‘08 will be his third year as starter. 6’3”, 235 lbs., has played LB, FB, and will be a DE this year. Does what his team needs him too. Has offers from many schools with high academic standards.

i understand what you mean Todd. A super 11 player has to have the numbers and the offers. you want the super 11 to be players that you still see 10 years from now. not just a guy who played well, but not even go to college. i think they should be a combination of both, good players and highly rated recruits.

Food for thought regarding Donovan Tate: If there’s a high risk that a player will sign a pro contract in baseball, does that make you less of a prospect in football? In other words, what are the chances that Donovan Tate is going to be an all-conference football player some day? I’m thinking not that great just because of baseball. Should we consider that?
There is precedent. George Lombard was a Super 11 player, for what it’s worth.

Don’t judge kids by how much they have been recruited, that’s not the point of the Super 11. The Mettenbergers of the world can get all the credit they deserve later when they actually earn it, until then, stick with the Tamburos.

I nominate Braxton Lane at Sandy Creek High School. Nominated for the US ARMY All American Bowl. He had 55 receptions for 1,072 yards and 11 touchdowns during his junior season. He was named the Fayette County Offensive Player of the Year. He has 4.31 40 speed. He holds school records in receptions and yards in a game, a season, and a career. He’s also third all time in All-Purpose yards. All this at the same school that produced Calvin Johnson.

Rashard Smith is definitely a Super 11 player. Already has offers from North Carolina State and South Florida. Florida State has called but not sure if they have offered. Will be a shut down corner in college. The reason you may have not heard much about his recriuting is that he is just as good in basketball and wants to play both in college.

Who are the best wide receivers you asked?…. I think you got it right with Danny Madison ,If there’s a kid in the state that can match Madison’s speed and hands , i’d like to see it….Nside Eagles gave up 3 passing TD’s last season , Madison torched us for 2…..And Did you consider his team mate LB Julian Burnett?

Drayton Calhoun of Tucker.. If he was a feature back last season he would have run for at least 2,000 yards and 20 TD’s. Averaged 9.3 per carry. Warren Norman of Chamblee.. Ran for 900 yards and 10 touchdowns in last six games while leading Chamblee to its first semifinals game at the Dome Joel Kight (ML King) definitly should be on the list. Was the top defensive player in the highest classification last season. It will also be a good story since his brother Kelvin, formerly of Lithonia and University of Florida, was on the AJC Super 11 in 2000. Does anyone know when rivals will release its names of the top 50 players in the state for the 2009 recruiting class?

After sitting in the Dome and watching Michael Tamburo pick apart a real good Walton defense, there is no way he should be left off the Super 11. The kid can flat out play…regardless of his size. The Lutzenkirchen kid from Lassiter is a player, but he’s got NO help up there.

Branden Smith is the best HS player in GA and goes to B.T.W. in Atlanta.
He has started since his freshman year and also finished 2nd in the 100m this year to a guy who set the all-class state record.
I believe that Chase Vasser has averaged over 150 tackles per season the last two seasons for Chestatee HS. He is also a UGA commit.

I really hate to see Greg Reid go out of state to play college ball. However, he fits into Urban Meyer’s offense and defense. Until you see him play, you don’t want to give in to the hype. Ask anyone on North Gwinnet’s defense about the first play from scrimmage in the state title game. We can only hope he keeps his nose clean and remain a good kid. If he does, he will go far.

I’m sorry but all you Michael Tamburo fans need to get out more. He took apart a SUSPECT Walton defense, and got a lesson from a very good Lowndes defense in the title game. The Atlanta press does a real good job of making him out to be one of the best at his position, but put him up against the best defenses in the state and lets see how well he does. Nick Prostko of Tift County would be a better Super 11 QB than Tamburo. If he could have played the whole season last year Tifton might have been the team NG would have played in the dome last year….and it may have been an all region 1 title game.

I agree with Dawg1212. The state of Georgia is a hot bed for high school football talent. It’s easy to miss out on a lot of key, quality players. Maybe AJC should consider revising the Super 11? How about creating a list based on the position played, division classifications, or by county? Otherwise you end up comparing apples to oranges. Or maybe change the Super 11 to the Super 15?

What about the two kids at East Paulding High School. The 6 foot 3 inch WR Ed Cazenave who stunned the state last year with big time catches, and Zach Gonosz a 5 foot 10 safety that will take your head off. The both of these kids need to be considered when you talk about the Super 11.

Todd,
Since when did the Super 11 become the “players who get the most offers?” I may be off-base here but you are rating HIGH SCHOOL kids. So much can change in a high schooler’s teenaged life in a hurry. Reward the kids who have had to-date or are expected to continue stellar high school seasons or careers, not who MAY be all-SEC or all-ACC, etc. The George Lombard exception is the perfect rule to go by in this case. But, I’ll go you one better. Who is Georgia’s all-time leading rusher…we all know it is Commerce’s Monte’ Williams and a member of the 2000 Super 11. How many all-conference awards? Zero. Deserving of Super 11 status? Absolutely. As was Commerce teammate Michael Collins. How many all-conference awards? Zero. You catch my drift with this. QB Nate Hybl of Jeff Davis made his post-HS mark far greater in golf than football, but he was deserving of his slot on the ‘97 squad. And not too many folks outside of Gwinnett County knew much about ‘99 QB selection David Greene of South Gwinnett, in fact, I’d bet more knew the other QB selection from Mitchell-Baker Dondrial Pinkins (perhaps through record-setting sibling Al)than about Greene. We all know how things turned out for Greene as the NCAA’s all-time winningest QB. No one could have predicted that one.
So give the guys who deserve the look the shot at Super 11 status. As for my opinion, give me a team that has Smith and Davis playing both ways at QB/CB and RB/LB and I’ll take my chances against all-comers! Thanks again for another good article.

Just because Donovan Tate is a top baseball prospect doesn’t mean that he should not receive the recognition he deserves for his play on the football field.
That’s ridiculous. You tell University of Michigan and Rich Rodriguez that he’s not a Super 11 pick. They’ll laugh in your face.
Todd - Donovan being a top baseball prospect has not stopped teams from recruiting him. Was that a serious question? You name the school…they are ALL recruiting him. USC, Florida, UGA, etc.

Neither Zach Mettenberger nor Tamburo deserves to be on anybody’s Super 11. Forget what scout.com says - I watched Price Kent and the team of people with me was HIGHLY disappointed ! You have to actually go SEE these guys play and often times more than one game against bottom feeders. Plus you can’t go on what the players coach says (I know, there’s no way around that). These picks are more popularlity contest than anything else. Plus the kids get on here and make absolutely ridiculous picks

Hello out there. I nominate Qua Huzzie of LG. SLAM DUNK. Of all the great LB’s to come from LG, I believe Huzzie may very well be THE best. Already has no less than 8 D-1 offers on the table, with more certain to come. Huzzie is not only fabulous on the playing field, but recently finished his junior year with the highest GPA in his class. If you liked Sam Olajabutu, Wesley Woodyard, Braxton Kelly, or Tray Blackmon, get ready to hear the name “Huzzie”. He will turn out to be the best of the best to come from LG. As for the “Rivals” ratings, except for Blackmon, none of the above players were among the “Top 250”. Yet Olajabutu and Woodyard were both 2 time All-SEC 1st team LB’s. Trust me on this one.

is there a chance you’ll put together a Super 11 for each class for us hs football junkies?
We won’t veer from our tradition of doing one, official, all-class Super 11, but it would be fun to do an Extra Point Super 11 each week with a different classification. Maybe we can start next week.
As to someone else’s suggestion that we expand the Super 11 to 15, Georgia probably deserves it, but I hope we never stray from tradition. I like the fact that we’ve had the same kind of Super 11 since 1985.
For one two-year period around 2000, we selected a Super 11 metro and Super 11 state (22 players in all), and I wish we hadn’t done it. It puts an asterisk on those Super 11 players.
And finally, readers be aware that this is not my proposed Super 11 above. In January, I listed the 11 guys that made the most sense to me at the time. I haven’t made up my mind on my final Super 11.

Someone mentioned Monte Williams from Commerce. He was as good as I and most people have seen in High School(Ask Bill Hartman, he was there when Monte broke the record)have seen. He could do a 4.2 something in the 40. Now High School and College are different. But, he could have still done a lot in a major college program. He could run, catch, return, you name it. He would not had the same status in College, but would have been an exciting, good player. He did not work on his grades. He did not work on his life either. So, nothing happened. He ended up at a football factory like school that gets you ready for college, but could not stick to that. So, the best High School running back I have ever seen, did nothing. That is a good reason for any high school athletes reading this blog to take heed. He was better than you are & he went amounted to nothing.

Is Donavan Tate even playing football his senior year? His former teammates don’t think so. At least make sure a kid is still playing the game before bestowing this honor.

Please, please don’t include players that are not at least an average student. Some of these players have grades in the cellar and in a state where we are constantly 49th or 50th in the country in education, someone has to send a message that football goes hand in hand with grades. These guys get all these accolades and then they can barely get into a juco or some D1 coach pulls some strings and they end up academically ineligible for most of their college career even though they have personal tutors. Send a message!

Hey Coach
Lakewood Stadium has field turf, not grass. Some more info for you Washington fans: dropping down to AAA does not mean your team will return to relevance. See you at the 50, I hope…

Abry Jones from NORTHSIDE/WR is right on the mark. He was a dominant player all year in 07 and was very instrumental in the Eagles State Championship. He reminds me of a Freddie Gilbert, Charles Grant or a Charles Johnson type DE. Eric Fields will also make a name for himself this year.

Super 11 picks seem to go to the players at the bigger schools. Why not give a shot at someone like Tanner Bryant that throws for 2,000 and runs for over a 1,000? Just an exciting player and a heck of a baseball player to boot. Just like Donnovan Tate he should at least be considered. Of course this is a tough assignment for reporters. Good luck Todd.

Why not give smaller schools a look. I agree with some of the other post that it should be based on sheer talent and excitability not because certain schools are recruiting a player. Tanner Bryant throws for 2,000 and runs for 1,000 and a heck of a baseball player. Same as Donnavan Tate. Consider them at least. This is tough assignment Todd.

Zach Mettenberger is a great QB who threw for a ridiculous amount of yards last year. Tamburo is a great Qb too. Ealey is a very good back, espically someone who lines up in a singleback formation all the time. I’d also cosider the Norman kid from chamblee, hes got some wheels and he is going to the all amercan bowl this year. J.D. is a well sound player on both sides of the ball, so he could go either way on the super 11 list. And how can jarvis jones be considered? him and leron furr were shutdown in that dome game by chamblee’s line. they might be big and can lay the wood on tackles but they cant shed blocks, so why all the hype?

Super 11 picks seem to go to the players at the bigger schools.
Not sure if that’s the case through time. Sometimes I think the small-class players have a better shot because it’s more likely that they’ve been all-state or posted eye-popping offensive totals than a Class AAAAA player.
Since when did the Super 11 become the “players who get the most offers?”
I never said it went to the players with the MOST offers. But it’s generally always gone to players with several major offers. Ideally, it’s the 11 guys that fans of both recruiting and high school football would agree are among the elite players in the state.
Just put the 11 best verbals to UGA in the state as your Super 11. That way you will get more “readers”.
Of about 275 players who have been Super 11 through history, about 100 signed with Georgia. Georgia got five last season, three in 2006, four in 2005.
when will the all-state baseball teams be announced?
Not aware that we’re doing all-state baseball, or that we’ve ever done on a consistent basis.

BT Fan, get your facts straight before you post such trash. He is was not 20 as a jr. He is playing this year and is within the rules that ahave been mandated. You cant even spell his name right, it is Ealey. He is the most talented back I personally have seen in high school football in years. He is like a freak of nature. He should be at the top of the list.

Ok - I wam extremely late in this input…but here it is none the less:
Kelton Hill - Lithia Springs High School. Kelton is too small in stature to truly be an effective QB. He should pursue college opportunites in his other sport (baseball). I don’t have exact figures but I do know that he lacks in completions in his passing game. He is quick on his feet and can scramble but lacks the power or size to break free when pressure is applied. It will be interesting to see if he can help keep LSHS’s momentum up in their quest to turn the program around in the new region.
Any player from our region would have to be a super stand out to be viewed in the same light as players from most other regions. Our region has historically been labeled the “weak region” and any sort of success in this region has been discounted as being the best of the worst. Harsh but true.

Darren Myles Jr. has 32 offers so far. Brandon Smith is fast, but he’s so fragile. Still, both of them are super 11 locks.
Forget who BTW has, the class of the region is NSC and then everyone else. It’s already been proven. 1 BTW player at the Under Armour/Scout.com combine, 6 from NSC.
It’s over. 4.38 40 yd Dash slows down considerably when he’s on his back. Tell him to lift more weights.

DCHS QB Anthony Caldwell should definitely be considered for the AJC Super 11 - As a junior passed for 1800+ yds and 21 TDs, added another 500+ yds and 5 TDs on the ground. Made AP and AJC All-State HM, All-County 1st Team, and All-Region 1st Team as a junior. Was Player of the Week 3 times in 2007 by local newspapers. Has a 3.8 GPA (all Honors and AP classes), top 5% of his class, and earned a 1680 on the SAT. Excellent character, very humble, and a truly gifted athlete.
He is getting looks from LOTS of schools, although no offers yet. The offers from so-called “major” schools are not flowing in based mostly on his size (6’0”). BUT he has been to camps with a lot of the QB’s mentioned above and has outshined most (if not all) of them; his arm is very big and he is extremely accurate - he can do whatever any coach asks him to do. Look for him to have at least three strong offers from very respectable schools by September.

Come on, a lot of you are mentioning guys that most of us have never heard of. Just because they were the best player in small, weak regions does not mean he should be a Super 11. The AjC want’s to sell some papers on this SUPER 11!

Kevin Minter and Jonathan Davis should be locks on this list. Without them on the list, it will be a joke. Two of the most highly rated players in the country according to every recruiting service, it would be a shame if either of them get slighted by their hometown paper…

how about a “super 11” per class A,,AA..etc…?
also,,while i admit i have no idea how the N.G qb did the rest of last season, but based on what i saw in our game with them,,theres definately better qb’s out there that didnt have bad nites against our “D”. again,,,jmo.

Nigel Mitchell-Thornton: Is one of the most un-selfish football players I have every had the opportunity to work with. This kid has over 20 offeres on the table and has yet to commit, because he wants the scouts to continue to come out and evaluate him so that some of his lesser accomplish players on his team can be seen as well. In addition, this kid is just as good in the classroom as he is on the football field. He has over a 3.0 GPA, taking advance & AP courses. On the field, he is a beast. He is definately a SUPER 11 PLAYER

Basesloaded & 89viking Todd addressed that issue earlier. In case you missed it:
We do a Super 11 for the three weekly edition we publish on Thursday’s CityLife (Atlanta, DeKalb County and south Fulton County), Northside (north Fulton County, North DeKalb and east Cobb County) and Northwest (Cobb and Cherokee counties).
