Georgia High School Baseball Blog: Championship Friday
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Feel free to post any updates, highlights and scores as they become available …
Class AAAAA
Game 1
Brookwood 3, Walton 2: Ross Heffley’s home run to right center field ended the first game. Buddy Jones’ two-run home run in the sixth broke a scoreless tie, but Walton’s Spencer Kieboom tied it in the top of the seventh with a two-run single.
Game 2
Brookwood 6, Walton 3: A six-run second inning propelled the Broncos to the championship. The big hit was Jordan Erisman’s bases-clearing triple. Alex Beebe threw six innings for Brookwood, which won its first state title since 1986, when the largest class was AAAA.
Class AAAA
Game 1
Loganville 7, Griffin 1: Blake McCullers hit a three-run home run to lead the Red Devils to victory in the first game. The Bears helped Loganville’s cause by committing five errors, leading to four unearned runs.
Game 2
Loganville 5, Griffin 4: Blake McCullers’ walk-off home run against Griffin’s Jeremy Holcomb gave the Red Devils (32-7) a sweep for the state title — the school’s first in baseball.
“We were down 4-0 and I was sitting over there at third with a good feeling,” said McCullers, a senior who said he’s bound for Georgia Perimeter College this fall. “I had kind of gotten down, but I knew something crazy was going to happen.”
Griffin shortstop Tim Beckham, a possible No. draft pick next week, had four hits and finished with a .677 playoff batting average, but the rest of the Bears managed just five hits in the two games.
Class AAA
Game 1
Cartersville 5, Stephens County 3: The Hurricanes pushed across two runs, breaking a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the sixth, for the win. Ethan Martin’s wild pitch allowed Zach Richards to score the go-ahead run and catcher Matt Hill’s error allowed Donovan Tate to score an insurance run.
Game 2
Stephens County 5, Cartersville 2: Chan Cash threw a complete game, allowing four hits and striking out six. Bryan Whitfield’s RBI single gave the Indians the lead for good in the fourth inning. Game 3 is Saturday at 2 p.m. in Cartersville.
Game 3, Saturday
Cartersville 13, Stephens Co. 1 (five innings): The Purple Hurricanes’ 5-foot-6 pitcher, Chris “Huddy” Huth, and an awakened quick-strike offense ruled matters in a 13-1 victory that was ended after the top of the fifth due to the 10-run mercy rule. Cartersville wins series 2-1.
Class AA
Game 1
Wesleyan 12, Lovett 0: Grayson Garvin struck out 11 and allowed only two hits in a mercy rule-shortened five innings. James Ramsey had a three-run homer and Kevin Ruiz added a two-run shot.
Game 2
Wesleyan 12, Lovett 6: The Wolves won the state championship, hitting three consecutive home runs in one stretch. It is the first baseball title for the Norcross private school.
Class A
Game 1
Landmark Christian 6, Pacelli 3: Tanner Bryant hit a two-run homer to lead the War Eagles to the opening-game win.
Game 2
Pacelli 4, Landmark Christian 1: Charles Rossi threw a complete game, striking out seven, allowing five hits. Rossi (13-2) also had the game-winning hit, a two-run single in the fifth inning that broke a 1-1 tie. Game 3 is Saturday at 4:30 p.m. in Fairburn.
Game 3, Saturday
Pacelli 10, Landmark Christian 5: In the deciding game of the Class A championship best-of-three series, freshman Matthew Rossi hit three home runs to help lead the Vikings to their first-ever baseball championship.

BROOKWOOD WINS GAME ONE 3-2 ON WALK-OFF Brookwood went ahead 2-0 in the bottom of the 6th on a 2 run homer and then Walton tied it 2-2 in the top of the 7th by stringing together several hits. The inning ended on a double play. In the bottom of the 7th, Brookwood’s second batter hit a walk-off homerun and Brookwood wins 3-2.

Congrats to the AAAA State Champions..Loganville Red Devils! This is a team to be reckoned with only the AJC missed out! The Griffin Bears however will never FORGET!! Good Job Bears. Too bad the AJC never took the time to notice the talent on this team! Even in the First Win tonight it took a stab with the comment of five errors to help us out. They faltered and we capitolized on it. Although i don’t think they needed the help and the second win proved that!! Griffins shortstop may be the bid MLB pick, but it takes the whole TEAM to win a CHAMPIONSHIP!!

Thank you AJC for giving Loganville our first State title. By not covering any AAAA teams besides Griffin, and never mentioning Blake McCullers’ name before tonight, you allowed Griffin to continually pitch to Blake like he is not a homerun threat.
This team will be back in the hunt next year, but don’t worry about covering it. The 2, 4, 5, and 6 hitters are 3 sophomores and 1 freshman. The sophomore pitchers may be better then the seniors. Go Red Devils! Congrats Coaches and Players we are proud…….

Loganville people
I’m not sure what I/we missed out on.
I covered Loganville’s first playoff game against St. Pius. I didn’t see any other writers there…did you?
We had a writer at tonight’s games with Griffin.
By not covering any teams besides Griffin? What are you talking about?
Here’s a list of Class AAAA teams I saw this post-season:
Woodward Academy Dutchtown Loganville St. Pius Griffin Heritage
Just because there isn’t a big story until tonight’s championship, doesn’t mean we didn’t “cover” Loganville.

I can appreciate the work you do, I wouldn’t expect YOU to cover all of the games. However, a writer was there covering Griffin. In fact, the URL is Griffin05/30. Anyways……You attended the St.Pius game, but nothing was written about it. (and that series was nothing to write home about) However, Loganville is mentioned in your Hardball Blogs only as “Salem is legit because it beat Loganville and Heritage”, and “Loganville v. Greenbrier is worth the price of admission” because of Belcher, nothing about the Devils. Sure, we didn’t breeze through the playoffs like Griffin did. But as said before, it takes a TEAM…….Oh, and I don’t know how I forgot the #7 hitter is also a sophomore. Make that 5 underclassmen starters returning, all the heart of the order.
Again, appreciate all you do! GO DEVILS!

Congrats to Brookwood. They must be one heck of a team if they can beat last years champs.
Just so no one forgets though…. Walton has won two consecutive director cups the only AAAAA team to ever do so. They clinched it this year even without a Baseball championship. Next year Walton will be going for 3 in a row.
Walton is arguable the top athletic HS in the state. In the most recent SI they choose Wesleyan to be the top HS. They might be but Walton is doing it completely clean. No Scholarship athletes. Using only the talent that their district lets them have….
So which one do you think is the better HS? Wesleyan? Walton? Your school? Make an argument I’m interested in seeing others opinion.
Thank you for your time and again congrats to the new state champs’ the Brookwood Broncos.

Coach B… You are ignorant. Are you saying that because Griffin has a great shortstop that he is the reason Griffin is so good? Did you know that ALL of Griffin’s hitters are outstanding ball players??? Did you know that Griffin is a team too? Did you know that Griffin wasn’t getting any love from the AJC or anyone this season until they made this run in the playoffs? No I guess you didn’t because you are too busy ranting about Loganville not getting any coverage rather than celebrating the win. You’re acting like a D-bag and you are making the school you support seem unappreciative of the fact that they just knocked off one of the BEST teams in the state. Grow up dude.

You have a good point there!! If they want to impress, they need to move up a minimum of 2 classes over their enrollment. Those are the only private schools that level the playing field. Anybody know which private schools do it? The only one I know that plays 2 above its #’s is Marist and they win the AAAA (maybe 8 years in a row)cup with 750 (AA #’s)students. I think the other private schools are moving back down, at least that is what I see from the new alignments. The Murphy Rule or 1.5 multiplier was a good idea, but it’s gone now. Anybody know? But you’re exactly right…..the private schools are allowed to go all over the state of GA to get kids. My son applied to Wesleyan, got in, but we were encouraged to let him stay back in the 7th grade again because of his size….nothing to do with academics. He had not hit puberty yet, so I guess they did not want him on their 8th grade teams! We’ll stay with the public schools here in Suwanee where you are not red-shirted based on your size in middle school!

First, congratulations to Loganville for its run through the playoffs and the AAAA title! The Devils have been on the brink of greatness over the past several years, and it all finally jelled this time!!
To the losers from BOTH sides sniping about who had the better player(s), GET OVER IT! The games are decided ON THE FIELD, not on online blogs. Be thankful you had good seasons, good teams, good players and a good time. Support these kids, people! THAT’S supposed to be the whole idea!!
To Cartersville fans, regarding my post from the other day, WELCOME HOME FROM THE STATE OF DELUSION!! Man, what a beatdown y’all laid on the Indians in the third game!! Kurt - Have you ever seen this before in a high school game? This happened in Game 3 of Cartersville vs. Stephens. The Canes were winning big and Stephens became frustrated with the home plate umpire over balls and strikes. Really their pitcher couldn’t hit his spots.
In this video, you will see the catcher duck on purpose to allow the umpire to be hit.
Have you ever seen this before?

Pretty Classless of Stephens County and their entire program to allow something like that to happen in any game, much less a state championship game. Lack of control if you ask me from an coaching perspective!!! If you get beat, then you get beat, but to make a mochary of the game and do something like that is very immature!! There should be some serious discipline from the coaching staff all the way down!!

@CANESWIN
I just watched the video and believe the catcher did it unintentionally. Btw, I have no bias, as I support nor watch either team. I just saw the news article. If you watch, the catcher’s glove it is positioned in an attempt to catch the ball at gound level. If the catcher had intentionally ducked, I suspect he wouldn’t have thought of this and his glove would face inward and closed to support himself. Also, there’s no evidence he anticipated dropping down.
In any event, this is what the umpire wears protection for and his job is voluntary.

For better or worse, that move is an old-school baseball trick. It’s not a particularly classy one, and if I were the coach of that team, I would make the players apologize to the ump and the other team. But kids make mistakes and learn from them. It’s not the end of the world. Possibly more upsetting is the fact that all those parents and fans seemed to be applauding when the ball hit the ump…
By Jeff
June 2, 2008 12:58 PM | Link to this
OK, I’m from the area - NOT a Canes fan, though I probably know at least a few of the families either playing or somehow linked to the program - but how is that ump doing?
As far as whether or not it was intentional:
It certainly looks that way to me. Looks like the catcher did a decent job selling it as not, but had it not been, he would have kept the glove up even as he ducked his body. I know that even as bad as I was in baseball, even when I ducked I tried to keep the glove in the spot I thought the ball was going to come through…

Chris, are you serious? You may want to watch the whole video, to include the slow motion piece. How you came to your conclusion is absurd. And it’s clearly evident by your last statement that you’re either a fan of Stephens county or you’ve never put on a jock strap for anything in your life. If you believe in your umpire wears protection/voluntary statement, then you would also agree that the batter wears a helmet, so pitchers can go ahead and pluck them in the head as well, since we all know the kids aren’t getting paid for services.
By Chris
June 2, 2008 1:09 PM | Link to this
Also, might I add the ball ricochets off of the batter’s helmet.
By PT
June 2, 2008 1:12 PM | Link to this
Usually a catcher will watch the ball wherever it goes and move towards it… a good catcher will anyway. In the video it appears the catcher is ducking and looking down in an exaggerated manner. Sure, a catcher will drop to the ground and block a ball with his/her body if the pitch is errant enough to require such a move, but this guy completely crouches down and ducks his head to only make it appear that he is trying to catch a bad pitch. The problem is that the ball is no where near the catcher’s glove. So, he’s either a horrible, horrible catcher with no sense of where the ball is or he’s doing it on purpose.
By Lex Luthor
June 2, 2008 1:15 PM | Link to this
So was the pitch a curve ball, or was it a fastball at either the batter’s or ump’s head? The problem with the story about the “curve ball cross up” is that it doesn’t explain why the fastball was a head hunter anyway.
By Chris
June 2, 2008 1:22 PM | Link to this
@dooder: I’m sure he gets paid. The point is the umpire chose to be there and the ball hit the umpire in the facemask, which is exposed. And as I mentioned above, the ball richoceted off the batter’s helmet.
@plainOjoe: Yes, I watched it several times. My conclusion is not absurd but based on fact. And I used to play baseball. People need to quit being so subjective. And if you yourself would look again, the catcher positions his glove to catch a low ball. Sounds like people on this forum need new glasses.
By plainOjoe
June 2, 2008 1:43 PM | Link to this
Chris, I can only go on what I know. I’ve been on both sides of the dish, meaning, I’ve pitched, catched and umpired. And like others have said, either that is the worse catcher playing in the state of Georgia, or the sun simply got in his eyes or it was intentional. All I know is, if he would’ve done that to me while I was behind the dish, he would’ve been tossed IMMEDIATELY. And if he conferenced with the pitcher before the pitch, I probably would’ve tossed the pitcher as well.
By observer
June 2, 2008 2:01 PM | Link to this
Chris…when looking at the scene in slow motion, the catcher starts his glove high where the umps head would be, then drops to the ground, his head looking down (which no catcher looks at the ground and just hopes the ball goes in the glove) the glove follows him to the ground, but if you notice the glove closes (right after he moves from the where it started (at the umps head)) verticle and to the side like a first basemen catching a throw. Now I was no catcher but if you are anticipating a curve, would you not keep your glove open and anticipate the ball coming back over the plate?
Just a thought I do not care one way or another if it was on purpose.

SC is classless!! It was intentional or the catcher is blind. Being at the game I saw the pitcher’s fastball and curveball. That pitch was fast and high - if the catcher thought it was a curve ball and it started out high, he would not immediately jump to the ground - it was intentional and he should be ashamed of himself.
The shortstop was also yelling at the umpire after watching strike 3 and was yelling as he was going back onto the field. Don’t get me wrong, he is a great player but a sore loser if you ask me - I would rather have a kid with a great attitude than a great player who is a sore loser and poor role model to kids watching the game.
All I can say is the better team (on and off the field) won on Saturday. It was nice it was called in five innings due to the “slaughter rule” - the SC players, coaches and fans were a pain to be around!!

PlainOjoe, you may have called a T-ball game before but please don’t act like you know what your talking about. You see this a lot when there is a mix-up of signs, for instance the catcher calls for a curve and he gets a fastball!!! Wow!! please do not post anything again. Please watch more baseball and read more about it before you even try to speak about it. Please you only make yourself look like an idiot, but I am guessing that is not too hard for you. Good luck and please come back when your a big kid and you can understand what the adults are talking about
By plainOjoe
June 2, 2008 2:25 PM | Link to this
Bobby, put on some gear and get behind the plate before you speak. If you think the SC catcher and pitcher had their signals crossed you’re an idiot. Everybody not associated with Stephens County knew that was an intentional act and not a mix-up of signals. Like I said in my previous post, if I was behind the plate, I would’ve tossed YOUR catcher, YOUR pitcher, and probably YOUR coach, just for the mere fact that he coaches a bunch of classless players. So go back to Stephens County, loser. FTR, I’ve actually never called T-Ball, which is probably the only level I haven’t called up to the college ranks.

So go toss little Jimmy from his T-ball game because he is crying to much!! You calling a baseball game in the college ranks, O my GOD THAT IS FUNNY!! You would not know where to put the “T” in a college game. But good luck this Saturday at your T-ball game I hope you can handle those little kids, they can be pretty mean to a big ole bad umpire!! GOOD LUCK JACK A

I saw the video and it looked like the catcher just panicked. He was holding his glove low, as if anticipating a curve, or maybe a sinker, as was said. Instead, the ball came high and he just got out of the way.

Little bobby, last to get picked in the field behind the trailer park doesn’t constitute playing “organized” baseball…. I’ll bet your trailer that I’ve called more games than you’ve watched, especailly lately, since the Braves don’t play much on Channel 17 and your UHF antenna on top of said trailer can’t get but about 6 channels anyways.

As a former catcher, I’ve done the old “miss the ball and let it hit the umpire” trick before. So, I don’t think it’s unheard of to do something like that.
I will say two things that make me think it may have been a mix-up. One, there was a baserunner on 2nd. If you are going to hit to umpire intentionally, why not wait until the bases are empty so you don’t advance the other runner. Two, the ball hit the umpire right in the facemask, which is pretty good aim for a high school kid. I think its more likely a coincidence than something intentional. Not a lot of HS pitchers can hit their spots like that. Then again, he was pitching in the state championship game, so the kid is probably no slouch.
I think it’s fun to talk about though.
By George P. Burdell

It was obviously deliberate. The catcher was headed to his knees before the ball even came close. The giveaway is his head position. He was looking down long before the ball is even close to the plate. Catchers are taught to always keep their eye on the ball and NEVER let the ball past them. Any catcher would let the ball hit him in the face mask and keep it in front of him especially with runners in scoring position. If I were an umpire in that game, I wouldn’t have ejected the players, I would have just closed up that strike so tight that they wouldn’t get hardly any calls.

if you look at the video several times you will see that the ball hits the batters helmet before it hit the umpire.i don’t believe the stephens pitcher had good enough control to hit both the ump & the batter in one pitch.

George P. Burdell has made the most valid point yet on this blog. Show me ONE high school level catcher (even more so, one competing for the state championship) that isn’t TRAINED to keep the ball in front of him at all costs - especially when there are runners in scoring position. They are taught from a young age to use the protection they wear to their advantage and to NEVER take their eye off the ball. Anyone who argues otherwise has never played, coached or even WATCHED the game. You all are argueing that a HS pitcher isn’t accuarate enough to hit an ump in the face mask - the intent was just to HIT HIM - didn’t matter where the ball hit him…and if your saying that HS pitcher can’t hit a target as large as a MAN then you really don’t know anything at all about baseball period. As I understand it, even their principal has admitted that there appears to be some level inpropiety in this play. It is a shame that this shadow is cast on an otherwise successful season. If the two and or three players acted on their own - it is really a shame for the remaining members of the team. Last but not least, these are still yet adolescents. To call them out by name in a blog and chastise them publicly is AS CLASSLESS as you are blaming them as being - come on, they just lost the state championship and embarrassed themselves, their team mates, their coaches, the school, their parents and their community…do you really think they need everyone else busting their chops too?
Just saying.
Either way it has no bearing on me, my boys were out in the first round of play offs but we had a GREAT season and have already started to work on next year.
GO COUGARS!!!!!

I’ve played, coached and been a fan of youth baseball for over 41 years. I’ve seen: 1) pitchers purposely hit opposing players, 2) players “spike” the opposing player while stealing a base (personal experience), 3) players starting fights (usually, after losing), 4) coaches encouraging their players to fight & 5) coaches fighting with parents.
Now, I’ve seen more than I want to.
This video is a disturbing testament to the lack of character and sportsmanship, by some, on the Stephens Co. baseball team. Even if the coaches didn’t call this particular play, their lack of leadership on the field was, in my opinion, the root cause.
Mr. Stephens Co. HS Principal, remove the pitcher and catcher from further participation in ANY team sports (should they remain eligible) and FIRE THE HEAD COACH while not renewing his teaching contract.

After looking at the video, the batter does not appear to get hit by the pitch…he just ducks a little to get out of the way. If he did get hit with the pitch, why did he tell the runner on second to move to third? Wouldn’t it be a dead ball and the batter get first without the runner at second taking third? Just an observation.

If you listen you can hear the announcers talking about the two or three inchesoutside the plate which they sometimes give. I think the kids got frustrated and he threw at the ump. I have no dog in this fight. The pitcher was not happy with the calls-body language-so he took a shot. The catcher had played well and the pitcher just missed his spots by an inch or two. The catcher bailed early. ##How many times have you heard coaches tell kids to hit a batter because somoneone on their team had been hit? Sportsmanship—where is it? Its a shame when FANS clap and cheer when someone gets hit. Kids learn form adults but adults are not always responsible for kids actions. Say a prayer for the kids and the ump.

yes it was intentional that much is obvious to everyone but a liar.
BUT was the ump blowing the game or really being biased, could anyone who saw the game comment on wether the ump was calling the game unfairly?
