Newnan wins game of dueling 7-run innings
Rain across North Georgia postponed 10 decisive second-round games Thursday in the state high school baseball playoffs but Newnan stayed dry enough to advance.
The Cougars erased a six-run deficit by scoring seven runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, defeating Warner Robins 13-12 to win their Class AAAAA best-of-three second-round series.
Down 6-5 with two outs in the top of the seventh, Warner Robins (20-10) scored seven runs to grab a 12-6 lead.
But Newnan (16-16) scored runs on a bases-loaded walk and a hit batsman before Kevin Dunn launched a grand slam to tie it 12-12. Colson McMichael, 2-for-3 before his final at-bat, followed two batters later with an RBI double to clinch the series.
“We give up a 7-spot but we hung in there and put up a 7-spot,” Newnan coach Kenny Morris said. “That was the biggest thing; we didn’t roll over.” - Kurt Aschermann Jr.
Lanier Co. 21, Schley Co. 5: The Bulldogs’ 19-hit attack included grand slams by Ethan McCray and Ryan White and earned the Wildcats a Class A quarterfinal series against Landmark Christian.
Gordon Lee 8, Aquinas 6: Taylor Eberhardt’s two-run single with two out in the seventh inning helped the Trojans win their Class A series in three games. “It was our fourth Game 3 in the last three years and now we’re 4-0 in those Game 3s,” Gordon Lee coach Greg Payne said.

How good do you think Redan High School baseball team will be next year? How many returners are they expecting and what positions?

EP will burst Salems bubble today. Those are some of the rudest fans I have ever seen, I know it was a long ride out there but come with a little class today unlike Wednesday. EP in a rout today!!!

Double duty today-
Started the day at Jefferson and watched the Dragons knock around ELCA for 17 hits in a 13-3 rout.
Sophomore first baseman Jake Fields had another huge day: 4-for-5, 2 hr (the second was his 18th, tying the single season school record) and 6 RBIs.
Four others had at least two hits, led by Lucas Redd’s four base hits and Blaine Skaggs’ two perfect bunt base hits; one of the best lefties I’ve seen at dragging it past the pitcher and between 2B and 1B.
Chris Swancey 5 effective innings and was blessed with a 6-0 lead after two innings and an 8-0 cushion after four innings.
Jefferson travels to Pacelli, Tuesday for the Class A quarterfinals.
Waiting on first pitch between Norcross-Brookwood. Hope wherever you are you’re enjoying the games.

EP coaches blowing this game, putting in a suspect pitcher in the 7th. Salem hits a 3 run shot off him and goes up 8-7.

Wow. What a great comeback by Salem. If they can hang on it’ll be some weekend for Region 8-AAAA with Heritage and Loganville already advancing.
Here at Brookwood - home team up 3-2, top of the 6th. Brookwood took lead in the bottom of the 5th after a Tyler Roach wild pitch scored pinch-runner Wade Brogdon.
Norcross with runners at 1st and 2nd, 2 outs in top 6th. Brookwood changing pitchers.

Good one here at Brookwood….
Chase Hawkins comes in and gets out of a bases loaded jam in the 6th; still 3-2 Brookwood, heading to bottom 6.

Told you North Cobb had a chance if they got to a 3rd game with Lassiter. They did and took full advantage of it. Final score NC - 4 Lassiter - 3.

The coaches from East Paulding blew my mind tonight. I have no affiliation with either team, just went to watch a good game down the road. They had a nice comfortable lead, their substitutions with pitching were horrible. You could tell who the better team was and who had more talent a couple coaching moves just made me wonder whats this guy thinking. The kid they brought in at the end looks scared to death and didnt seem like he had pitched much. Everyone around me were wondering why they put him in a big game like this. It was a very good high school baseball game though, hats off to both teams. Salem is a good squad, gritty team.

Why does Kell travel to Valdosta? Kell has home field according to the bracket. Way to go Cobb, 3 in the 5-A elite 8.

Prep-Sport Fan, That H on the bracket is in case both teams are the same seed. Since Valdosta is a 1 and Kell is a 2, they have to travel to Valdosta.
By Mike

B/c Valdosta is a #1 seed and Kells is a #2 seed. The higherer seeded team always has homefield advantage. The reason the bracket has an “H” there is to show that side of the bracket owns homefield advantag if both teams are the same seed…make sense? In other words, if Kell were a #1 seed, just like Valdosta, then Kell would have homefield advantage. However, they’re a #2 seed so they have to travel since Valdosta is #1 seed.

Baseball fans - sorry haven’t updated in a bit..had to actual eat some dinner before I passed out in my car on I-85…
Brookwood opened up the game with a 4-run 6th, Chase Hawkins with a big 2-run double and he picked up the save as well. Brookwood wins 7-2.
Salem 8, East Paulding 7
Region 8-AAAA with 3 teams in the quarters; nicely done. I think Heritage was expected but Salem and Loganville may have been a bit of a surprise.
Looking forward to a great elite 8.

East Paulding should fire Tony Boyd after that coaching performance. That guy is a piece of work. Has had talent everywhere he has been and cant ever go all the way with it. Don’t try to flex your muscle and NOT pitch one of your studs in that situation, it was 1 inning, get the game over with and move on. Mr Boyd decides to go with a first year pitcher instead with limited experience- season over.

Yea, thanks people who seem to have no confidence in a pitcher that comes into a game like that. (EP Game) Just calm down with what ya’ll say on here sometimes (like this) the pitcher reads it. Good job Salem though, way to battle back.

I think the only thing is a kid with limited experience shouldnt of been in at a situation like that. Thats not fair to him or the team to put him in that position. There is a reason behind why Boyd was fired before he came to EP.

Going with 3 or 4 key pitchers and then using inexperienced pitchers in the play offs or critical region games, when a team plays 3 or 4 games in a week seems to be common (is a complete game for a pitcher REALLY more important than getting relievers some experience?). You would think that coaches would think ahead and pitch their relievers throughout the season, but I have yet to see it happen. I’ve watched my son’s team fall prey to that phenomenon in each of the past 2 years. His team missed the play offs, in part, for that lack of planning.

You know that EP has the pitching guru in Johnny Cash. He was brought in to work only with the pitching. Most, if not all of the pitching decisions were made by him. He worked with and conditioned all of the pitchers. He calls the pitches. Maybe it was not the head coach at all. It appears the pitch was supposed to be a curveball low. The previous was an 0-2 pitch high that was barely tipped. The ball curved across the plate right below the knee. The batter had to uppercut to get the ball. Hats off to him. Could and should have been a ground ball or K.

Redan baseball team will return several starters according to their roster including an outstanding 9th grade shortstop prospect. By the way, he hit a two run homerun against us. But as usual, they will probably exit in the first round of the state. Team is always loaded with talent but not well coached.

Ok, who had Newnan in the great 8 in their pool selection? Here’s a team that was 11-14 prior to the play offs (3-10 outside their region). They have to be the story of the AAAAA play off. I’m not familiar with the team, but that’s got to be one excited group of baseball players.

where is the new post? Thanks and I know you are busy. Give me the classes of your prospects mentioned in 5-15 blog. I found out the Bryant player at Landmark is a Junior (wow), what about the rest? That homerun just landed by the way.

Kurt, who is the shortstop at Redan? Will Brookwood win state? Who is the winningest active baseball coach in the state of GA.? How good is North Cobb?
By Kurt Aschermann Jr.

Bill Honestly, I had Newnan losing to Redan in the first round. Great 7th inning comeback against Warner Robins to go along with a great comeback against Redan to win that series. Should be an interesting series with North Cobb.
“Basesloaded” new blog coming Tuesday morning, then I’m off to Columbus.
Pope, Belcher, Miller all seniors. If they aren’t drafted, Pope and Miller are headed to Tech; Belcher to South Carolina.
Lucky I think you’re talking about Deion Williams. Look out for this kid.
Brookwood is an interesting story. I picked them to win Class AAAAA before the playoffs and of course I stay with my pick. But I think there’s two ways you can look at them getting taken to 3 games against Alph. and Norcross - either it’s a matter of time before they lose a series, or they’re just finding a way to survive and advance. Right now, I’m leaning towards the latter. I will say this, despite the good play of teams like Newnan/East Coweta/North Cobb, I think Brookwood is on the right side of the bracket to get to the championship series. Avoiding Kell/Valdosta/Walton until the finals, bueno.
Winningest active/all-time coach is Bobby Howard at Columbus. Unofficially, I have him at 737 wins coming into the Cartersville series.
As for North Cobb, I unfortunately haven’t seen them play this year, but they beat Lassiter and they’ve lost 3 games in April and May. I’ve heard junior righty Clay Dalton is legit. I think they’ve got a great shot at not only beating Newnan but reaching the title series as well. Of course, I thought Harrison was going to the title series, so what do I know?
How about a Newnan-East Coweta match up in final four? Could happen.
Enjoy the quarterfinals and look for the new blog, May 20.
