Spring Football Fling: Lowndes locked in, loaded up for state title defense

THE SPRING FOOTBALL FLING
In upcoming weeks, teams throughout the state will spend 10 days on the practice field preparing for the 2008 football season. In a series of stories, ajc.com will provide an offseason outlook for 25 of the top teams in the metro and state.

This Week’s Lineup
• 4/28: Lowndes • 4/29: Parkview • 4/30: Mays • 5/1: Marist • 5/2: N’side-Warner Robins • 5/3: Lovett • 5/4: St. Pius

You make the call: What’s the buzz on Lowndes in ‘08? Are the Vikes a state title shoo-in? Games start in August. Talk starts NOW.

There is bad news for all of those football teams wanting to win the 2008 Class AAAAA state championship.

Lowndes, winners of three of the last four state titles, might field one of its best teams in years.

Fourteen starters return on offense and defense, and both kickers also return from last season’s dominant football team.

The defense could be even better after yielding only eight points a game last year. Cornerback Greg Reid, a Florida commitment, and safety Gerald Demps, who has committed to Florida State, lead the way. The defensive front welcomes back five of six starters.

Lowndes Vikings
Region 1-AAAAA

Spring practice dates: Held in February.
Last year’s record: 14-1, defeated North Gwinnett 34-6 for the state championship.
Reclassification challenge: Region adds two-time Class AAAA champion, Northside-Warner Robins.

Worked on: Physicality. Mastering the fundamentals of tackling and blocking has always been coach Randy McPherson’s credo, and that lunch box approach is exactly what the Vikings focused upon.

Key starters lost: RB Darriet Perry (Florida International); CB Kelly Dawsey (Western Michigan); LB Tavaris Williams (Georgia Southern); LB Blake Summers.

Key starters returning: DB-WB — Greg Reid, Sr., (5-9, 175); FS — Gerald Demps, Sr., (6-1, 205); QB — Khary Franklin, Jr., (5-6, 165); DT-FB — Devin Simmons, Sr., (5-9, 255); DE — Michael Copeland, Jr., (6-3, 215).

2008 strengths: Both sides of scrimmage will be formidable with several major-college players. Reid may well be the state’s best all-around player.

2008 weaknesses: Perry, a four-year starter, will be hard to replace. But the biggest hurdle may be mental. This team is favored to win it all again, so handling that will be the question.

This season’s projection: From a talent standpoint, this may be the program’s best ever, so all preseason talk of championships rightly start and end at Martin Stadium.

Week Two Lineup
• 4/21: ML King • 4/22: Valdosta • 4/23: Buford • 4/24: P-Ridge
• 4/25: Tucker • 4/26: Fayette • 4/27: Brookwood

Week One Lineup
• 4/14: Roswell • 4/15: Norcross • 4/16: Walton • 4/17: Harrison
• 4/18: Camden • 4/19: Newnan • 4/20: Stephenson

Lowndes can win it again as long as they don’t have to play Harrison. Oh I forgot, it was raining last year but only when Lowndes had the ball. Good luck to the Vikings in 2008.

No matter how many new schools pop up in the Atlanta area, The Winnersville, USA combo of Lowndes High and Valdosta High is and always will be the premire spot for high school football in the state of Georgia. There’s a reason the national high school football hall of fame is in Valdosta. I’ve got a feeling the rest of the state will see another championship traveling down I-75 this next season.

The key to Lowndes winning state was that nobody could defend their multiple running threats—-their FB and two WB’s were great. Assuming Lowndes replaces Perry in their backfield, they’ll win state in a walk. Their toughest competition will probably be within their own region.

I agree with Billy C about Lowndes and Valdosta, but there is no national High School Football Hall of Fame in Valdosta. That was a big marketing scheme that never came to fruition. Having said that, the Vikings are still going to be pretty darn strong in 08, museum or not.

Think Lowndes will be great again. Region looks really scary but I believe they are ready to make another run. Question I have for the AJC. Who will the last of the teams to be reported on after St.Pius? I would like to hear about North Gwinnett and Grayson.

Lowndes has proven they can win in the playoffs on their home field. Wake up GHSA and play neutral field throughout the playoffs. Things may not be different but at least the end results would be a TRUE non-advantaged state champion. Put an * by all the state champions until an even playoff format is used.

Lowndes has one main thing going for them in that unlike North Georgia they are not seeing their talent pool duluted by new schools being added every couple of years. Schools like Harrison, McCeachern, Kennesaw Mountain and North Cobb have lost many kids to new schools over the last few years and there is only so much talent to go around.

Get Them Off Their Home Field check out Lowndes in 1999 (3 playoff road trips plus the Dome) and 2004 (1 state championship road trip). What state would you be from where they don’t have enough good high school football to hold your attention away from the great H.S. football played in Georgia. I can’t blame you though for always looking up to the articles and up to the state where the greatest H.S. football is played. So, see you on another Ga. High School blog and glad you have come over to the best. Where state champions don’t always have to be in neutral sites to be declared State Champs.

Tift County will be right there with Lowndes coming out of Region 1-AAAAA. These 2 teams will no doubt be the toast of the finest region not only in the state, but in the united states. The Blue Devils of coach Jay Walls will either be the #1 or #2 seed going into the state playoffs, which are just a formality for us going against the North Georgia teams (Ha)

Yo-Yo, you sound like a Valdosta fan, living in the past. Even YOU have to admit a home team has an advantage. Put’em on a neutral field throughout the playoffs and let the teams decide it fair-and-square. GHSA is like south Georgia, living in the past.

Georgia state champs can be declared anything they want to but their championship is diluted if they play at home all the way through. Sounds like a stacked-deck to me. Lowndes would have beat Camden last year by 5 touchdowns if they would have played at home….it was a little closer in the dome.

Lowndes is the type of program that is built to last and stand the test of time. They focus on the fundamentals (blocking ang tackling) and beat you with smash mouth football. From the 80’s to present, they mastered the system of winning. Valdosta, my home town, and Lowndes, my high, school is a place where winning is embedded in the community.

To: YO, Wondering when you were going to show up here. “Fan of the Game” is simply a disgruntled “Gwinnettifer” who cannot understand why his school with an enrollment of 3500-4000, and “diluted” very simply cannot compete with south Georgia football. The answer is simple: THEY PLAY THE GAME BETTER IN SOUTH GEORGIA.(neutral field or not). nuff said.

By yo

To By Yo…S. Ga. keeps winning championships so “yes” we like living in the past. You should try it. When we win championships it generally doesn’t matter if it is home or away…we just win them.
S. Ga. doesn’t complain about or make excuses when they have to travel and they do travel more than any other in the state. Those who can’t win championships use the home and away site as an excuse. So stop making excuses. Also, the reason the home team generally wins is because they are the better team who has earned the right to play at home. Kind of like it is done in most other “still living in the past” sports. If a team wants to have the home field advantage they play for it during the regular season and end up 1 or 2 in their region. The number 3 and 4 seeds of 1AAAAA (and S. Ga.) have to hit the road just like every other region and frankly fair quite well when they do. So unlike you we don’t make excuses about home field advantages we just show up and play. Also, when Lowndes shows up at your stadium (assuming you have provided the seats) then you will not have much of a home field advantage because no matter where it is in the state our fans will be there. Simply because we expect to win in “your” stadium. If we lose then we lose but not because it was in “your” stadium.

To the one who wrote Lowndes would have beaten Camden by 5 touchdowns if played at Lowndes (the real Yo did not write that) I disagree. I have much more respect for Camden and their defenses than to make that comment. I don’t think neither Lowndes or Camden sees the Dome as an excuse..if any thing the Dome and the turf has been an advantage for Lowndes.

Im a Colquitt County fan and im still dumbfounded how Lowndes runs a total of 8 different plays every game and has a 5’6 QB but still beats everyone. I dont think Lowndes is gonna win it all this year. They definitely have the team on paper to do it but with Northside entering the region, the regular season will be that much tougher. As physical as some of these games are, its gonna be tough to avoid injuries. Thats why expect a metro ATL team like Norcross to win it all. Camden County also has a chance because that region is so easy. Camden is playing Hoover (AL) this year. I would like to see Lowndes have a national schedule like Valdosta (they played Jordan HS (Utah) the last two years).

I wouldnt be shocked if Lowndes won it all again but its gonna be a tougher road than other teams face.

Lowndes probably will repeat as AAAAA champs in 2008.It won’t be an easy task though. Most of the teams in 1-AAAAA we’re pretty much off the mark last year ,2008 will be a bounce back year for Tift and Warner Robins. An early matchup with Ware should be intresting. If any team can slow Lowndes running attack ,It might be Ware , or NSWR . I think all eyes in 1-AAAAA will watch this matchup with Ware closely. I think a team will have to keep Lowndes O-line in check with size up the middle and speed on the ends . Not an easy task , but if a team can contain Reid and force Lowndes to the air it out, things could get intresting

I agree with you completely Reeze. Lowndes does not have the luxury to have Darriet Perry and Greg Reid any more. Now the pressure is solely on Greg Reid, who plays both ways. With that kinda attention, the tough schedule they have, and the fact that he only goes 5’8 170, there is a chance he could go down with an injury. If a team like Ware, Peachtree Ridge, or Northside got up on Lowndes early, then they would be in trouble because of their lack of a passing game.

I just hope Colquitt County manages to win 5 or 6 games.

Harrison fan of the game….think! You liked to blame Lowndes last year for making excuses after game 1 are you not now doing the same with your statement(talent pool duluted). Last time I checked Metro schools are extremely big compared to S.Ga. schools (including Lowndes) and loaded with lots of talent. So are you making excuses like you claimed we did or are you speaking the truth like we think we did? Clear as I can make it.

yo- thats not true about metro ATL schools. some are bigger than Lowndes but Lowndes has over 2700 students which makes it one of the largest schools in the state. Only a few schools that i know of (Brookwood and Collins Hills) are bigger than Lowndes. the only reason Lowndes is dominant because so many people have moved from the city district to the county district.

many metro ATL schools have lots of players that transfer in because of No Child Left Behind which allows students to transfer to a school in the same district if the current school doesnt meet academic standards. it basically allows recruiting to take place in Gwinnett County where there is over 10 AAAAA schools alone.

That’s the most uninformed statement that I have ever heard, the population of Valdosta is larger right now than it’s ever been, the city is much bigger now than it was in the 70’s & 80’s when Valdosta was dominant, the reason for the success of Lowndes is quite simple,we have great coaching that teaches fundamentals and run the Wing T to perfection.

This is a interesting run of comments. My 2 cents for what it is worth. History certainly supports the elite of South Georgia. No boom of population down there so continuity of players and schools has benifited them. Since there is a focus on Gwinnett with enrollment. How many schools in Metro Atlantawere built recently as 1999. Housing boom the last 4 years has Gwinnett Schools busting at the seams. I will use Grayson as an example. It opened in 2000 taking away a majority of students from South Gwinnett who has experienced a slump in football power since then. Grayson has built up to make a run in the playoffs the last 2 years. But in 2 years they are scheduled to split again. A new school called Archer will be taking students from Grayson and Dacula. I am certain that Grayson and Dacula will be hurt by this. This trend has been taking place for awhile in Gwinnett. With the housing market taking a hit and the stabilization of communities I believe some schools will remain competative. Brookwood and PArkview have been around long enough to weather the metro growth, with good coaching. But continuity of schools, students, and coaching has to contribute into the formula of a winning program I would think. Hence the reason I think Lowndes and Valdosta will go deep in the playoffs.

I can remember growing up in Georgia when valdosta was the pride of Georgia. Well those days are history and should be buried and forgotten. So many people had fled Valdosta for the surrounding rural areas and that’s the main reason Lowndes is now the dominant team in Winnersville USA. The Vikings have become the finest team in the state handsdown. It’s ok to bring in a team from Utah to play them, but for Christ sakes you don’t let them whup ya butt on your homefield. Look for Lowndes to be evry dominant, including thumping Valdosta again.

YO: By the way, right county, wrong school. As far as excuses go, they are not excuses they are facts. Harrison and North Cobb lost kids to Kennesaw Mountain when it opened. McCeachern lost kids to Hillgrove when it opened a couple of years ago. Now Harrison, North Cobb and Kennesaw are losing kids to Allatoona which opens this fall. That takes away players and coaches as T.J. stated so well. How good would North Cobb, Harrison or McCeachern be if they had those kids in one place? I suspect quite a bit better. How many new schools have opened in the Lowndes area the past two, three, four years or whatever?

Slalom1: Right on! yo: Mill Creek has over 4000 students. Also, well said about the 3 & 4 seeds. To whoever said that Region 1-AAAAA is only Lowndes has not done their homework. In 2006, when Lowndes DID NOT make the playoffs, Tift Co. & Warner Robins made the semifinals.
Lowndes’ toughest challenge will be getting out of Region 1-AAAAA. Props to Peachtree Ridge & Grayson for beefing up their out of region schedule. Peachtree Ridge will play Lowndes & Grayson will play Warner Robins this year. Just wondering, Parkview has NOT been effected by redistricting, but their program has fallen off. Lowndes County has exceptional athletes, excellent coaches and great support from fans, administration etc.Take it from Roswell and N.Gwinnett, it will be more than difficult to stop their Wing T offense. In North Georgia, the Wing T is fading fast. In 2007, Roswell played 13 games and faced only 2 teams who played with the QB under the center for any substantial amount of time. The Spread Option is the rage in N.Georgia. As a result Lowndes will have an advantage in running the Wing T. There is no way to simulate the “speed” with which the Vikings run their offense. If you go to the Concrete Jungle or face Lowndes in the Dome you better bring some “D”. You will have a chance to move the ball on them IF your Offense is physical. No doubt the rain neutralized N.Gwinnett but I don’t see anyone finessing their way through Lowndes Co. They don’t move much on Defense and you can find them but you have to put a hat on a hat for 4 Qtrs. At my age I don’t get Impressed much, but I was in December and still am today Very Impressed with the Vikings. It will be interesting to see how the much improved Wildcats across town and Northside W’Robins impact Region 1AAAAA. If Lowndes gets thru unscathed Watch out!

Regarding Lowndes. First of all, I have no connections to the school nor to Valdosta. I very simply respect how they get things done down in “Winnersville”. It is a combination of great feeder programs, great community support, and great coaching. Lowndes is by no means among THE largest schools in the state. Neither was Valdosta during its dominant era. During the 2007 season, I compared the Lowndes roster in terms of size, depth, etc against one of Georgia’s top AAA programs. Guess what. The AAA school won the battle.(on paper). But, on the field, NO contest. The programs in Valdosta have always set the high water mark for HS football. This is why you “Gwinnettifers” will NEVER get it right. Build your schools as large as you can, like the “Texicans”. But, you will still NEVER dominate South Georgia HS football. Why? All of the above.

Tift County is probably the 3rd best team in Region 1AAAAA. its a longshot for them to win a state title.

slalom- Lowndes is definitely one of the largest schools south of Macon. there might be 10 schools overall in the state that have a greater population. IMO, that makes them one of the largest in the state.

I see that you think very highly of Lowndes. I lost all respect for them and their coach when he called for his offense to go for a two point conversion when they were up by 4 TDs late in the 4th quarter against Colquitt County. Lowndes has some of the most obnoxious fans in the state. Eventually (and im thinking this year since the title game in the Dome) they will run into a team that will not back down from them. Im still not convinced that you can run that Plowboy, wing T offense against a team with great athletes on a neutral field and have success. Lowndes has no balance and are one or two injuries away from becoming a good but not great team. the Peachtree Ridge/Lowndes game should be a good one.

You can quote all those State and National Championships you want to , those days are gone and never coming back. Belue, Lastinger, Bond, Rome, Bounds, And a host of others wouldn’t be going to Valdosta today, they would be at Lowndes. One of the entries cut straight to the point THUGS not dominate Valdosta High. They couldn’t care less about history, pride, and tradition. They talk the talk, but don’t walk the walk. Valdosta used to intimidate teams, used to be able to play 3 deep at all positions and still blow anybody out. Those days are long gone. What the great teams achieved does not belong to this current generation. The new kids in town are the Vikings. They are building what Valdosta ONCE HAD. Lowndes is by far the best team in VALDOSTA GEORGIA. All signs and reference to Valdosta as the nations winningest high school program are a joke today.

He didnt hurt my feelings. Im just saying it was a douchebag move to go for a 2 point conversion with only a couple minutes left in the game when you have a 4 TD lead. It will only be a matter of time till Lowndes falls from grace. Northside is new to the region, Tift Co. and Valdosta are solid, and Colquitt is building for the future. I guess im the only one not drinking the kool-aid.

A class organization from top to bottom. Should you be right about the “thug” mentality, then Tomberlin would be the man to get things right. Hope Valdosta will give him time.

Case of envy? its something called respect. whats the point of going for a 2 point conversion when you are up by 20 something points with only a few minutes left in the game? he wanted to rub in? for what? to show that mighty Lowndes could beat up on a bunch of 10th graders mixed with a few juniors. Colquitt County had an awful team last year. Lowndes was the better team by far. no need to try to embarass kids like that

If Lowndes survive region 1AAAAA and wins another state title I feel that they would qualify as one of the great dynastys. However there will be a couple of wars that they must survive in their region and that includes playing the boys from middle Georgia. The Demons will not have 2 bad years in a row. HOCO is under new management. Northside will be Northside, but they are in a reloading season. Lowndes last game of the regular season will be a show down..

Staff Infection of the mouth on Tebow…sorry we beat you by 1 too many points.  I think your real name is Russ Propst and you are already making excuses.  Been watchin too much game film of last year and getting worried?  You can’t recruit all of Birmingham to field your team now but you are going to have to do it the good old fashioned S. Ga. way and actually earn it with the boys that show up.  Actually, it would be nice to see Colquit Co. field a team like the 90s again..we enjoyed beating them more then than we do now.  It was actually a rivalry back then. ps-going for a 2 point conversion can come under the guise of practice…you should try it.  Also, only losers cry about the amount of the score.  Quit getting your feelings hurt it was only 1 more point.  Been holding that 1 point grudge for a long time now haven’t you?  Get over it and go get some sleep.  Fan of the game (from Snobb…oops mistype I mean Cobb cty.) I can assure you I smile with a great big smile as I type this post.

NSEagle78 I think you are dead on.

Tift, Warner, Nside, and Valdosta will be the heavy weight competition Lowndes has to deal with in 2008 from 1AAAAA. The ones that concern me the most this year are the 2 from Middle Ga.

Coldhardtruth , well put, Most know I bleed Blue and Orange , rather if you are a fan of Lowndes or not ,football fanatic or not, anyone who watched Lowndes vs Camden or NG ,who has even the slightest knowledge of football ,had to be impressed with these performances from Lowndes.I watched them play WR in early November last season , I can tell you .I watched an entirely different team 4 weeks later in December., offensive execution of plays I feel was the turn around for lowndes ,Lowndes O-line turned to the best in state in a matter of weeks . No doubt ,Greg Reid is a tremendous athlete , but Lowndes O-Line runs that offense ,i’m looking forward to seeing Micheal Copeland this season on defense ,he’ll have a Abry Jones like break out year ,NSeagle78 , with 3 straight humiliating losses to NSWR ,ill have to agree with you ,the Demons will be back with avengence , with WJ Mac , Aaron Allen ,Rashad Wynes and crew returning the Demons will be a handful .With NSWR entrance and Colquitt’s super duper coach in the mix , a Rebounding Tift and WR ,Lowndes dominating nightmare of a team ,always Coffee and Valdosta (Hoco ,no chance ,Craig Presley, only if you were at NSWR, we could use you this year) 1-AAAAA will be the region to watch this year, EVERY WEEK ! I haven’t looked at WR and Hoco’s schedule closely but i’m sure they’ll be a few Thur ,Fri and Sat night games at the Mac this season ,i’ll do my best to catch them all ,So Slalom 1 put your Granger season tickets up on Ebay my man , and come on over and enjoy!

To: REEZE, I miss the days when LG played the likes of NSWR, Valdosta, Newnan, etc. Speaking of which, LG opens the season against AAAAA Newnan in 2008. In Region 2AAA, Shaw, Carver-Col, and LG will all compete against both AAAAA GA teams, along with AAAAAA AL. teams. As a matter of fact, Carver-Col will face NSWR early in the season. But, worry not. Carver will not have the offensive punch they had in 2007. However, their defense will be strong. Led by LB Jarvis Jones and LB Leron Furr, along with the best athletes in Muscogee County, their defense should be formidable. Hopefully, with the KIA plant coming to Troup County, in just a few years you may see both LG and Troup back in AAAAA. In the mean time, along with LG, I will closely follow 1AAAAA. (Do not think my tickets would bring much on EBAY).

yo- thats real mature of you. obviously the mcpherson’s personality has rubbed off on his fans. it was a matter of respect. what is lowndes trying to prove by trying to embarass the other team?…BTW, Colquitt County completely owned Lowndes in the 90s. you really dont want to go there.

To Reeze. You are correct about the OL at Lowndes, they are the strength of the team and will be a force for two more years, most of the OL were sophomores last year,Lowndes was a very young team last year.I agree with you about Michael Copeland,he is going to be a beast at DE,he’s got the size and speed be a sack artist, and the next Greg Reid is already in training,he will open some eyes next year.

Stafford>Tebow..sorry about the slur that as I reread it the “on Tebow” part insinuated more than I meant for it to. Any way…no coach should be accused of running up the score any less than McPherson. The thing about McPherson is that he doesn’t seem to let the score or the thoughts of the other team dictate to him what he feels he needs to do to improve his team as the year goes along. Lowndes also attempted a 39 yard field goal against you at the end of the game. That wasn’t trying to run up the score it was getting his young field goal kicker more game time kicks of distance which as playoffs came along paid off. One thing you need not worry about with McPherson is him purposefully running up the score. If any thing with McPherson it is generally the other way around. However, he is definitely likely to call a 2 point play at any time in a game, no matter what the score or how much sleep any one ends up losing over it. Regarding the nineties the first 6 years Colquit won and the last four years Lowndes won 3 and you took the last. You won in 1999 when Lowndes went on to win State. That is the last time CCHS has beaten Lowndes and unfortunately (because I really enjoyed the excitement of playing Colquit) the last 5 years have been no contests against Lowndes. During the 80’s and 90’s the anticipation of playing Colquit was almost on par with anticipating Valdosta. I kind of miss those days when you would turn out a whole side of the stadium full of Packer fans and the electricity in the air would be wild when the 2 of us met. Maybe the “legend” will return the legend of Packer football after all….we’ll see.

Wow, it’s great to see that most of the focus is on The 2007 AAAAA State Champs Lowndes High Vikings. Must mean that somebody must think they are going to be pretty darn good this season, and rightfully so. I know that the season hasn’t began yet and making predictions at this point would be somewhat premature but listen my fellow bloggers this 2008 Vikings team is loaded with old and new talent. This could possibly very well be this best team that Lowndes has ever put on the field both offensively and defensively at the same time in the same season. And please, not to disrespect any of the other teams in AAAAA, but I just feel that its Lowndes’ time and they won’t be denied back to back titles. They are just too talented on offense, too much speed on defense, and very well coached. P.S. Watch-out for Tyler Hunter!

Hey Buck Blalock, nice lay-out of all the accolades VHS have accomplished over the years, but I noticed there wasn’t any AAAAA State Championships on that impressive resume. All of that looks great on paper and its a remarkable bragging piece but hey it’s all about Region AAAAA baby, the toughest region in high school football. So until the Wildcats prove that they can win in this region, nobody is going to respect you or be impressed by how many trophies that are in your trophy case. It’s time for you guys to stop living off of bragging rights from the past and get busy

Wow. Reading these comments is absolutely ridiculous. You would think that a bunch of south georgians would be joining forces to root on all teams coming from the south as a whole this year. Not pulling out any kind of insult they can find to beat down the other’s team. I’d be happy if any of our highschools took a state title this year. Yeah, I’d be stoked if it was Lowndes, but if it’s VHS, CCHS, TIFT, or even COOK you better believe I’d be there showing my support! South Georgia has THE premier football programs in the country. Hands Down. And we should just be excited that our teams have kicked butt, and are going to kick butt into the 08 season. LHS, VHS, TIFT, CCHS have all had their glory. We share in the success as a region. Now let’s get back to the LOVE of the GAME and stop slamming each other into the ground alright?

Sorry but those of you north of Macon are not aware that regardless of classification the best high school ball has been played in South GA period.

Pick your classification other AA and you will find more winners from the lesser populated southern part of the state than anywhere.

AAAAA can boast both past and present.

AAAA is loaded with former state champs in Ware Co, Thomasville, Thomasville Central, Cairo, Worth to name a few.

AAA features Early County, Americus and several other champs. Albany, Crisp County are other programs of note.

AA Clinch County and Brooks headline the smaller classification.

A has been dominated for decades by undersized Charlton County.

Look it up and every classification except perhaps the traditional AA there are more state champs from the southern third of the state than the rest of the entire state despite the lack of large metro areas like Augusta, Savannah, Atlanta and Columbus.

And it only gets more lopsided if Macon is included in the south.
