Take 10: Georgia High School Sports Greatest Dynasties

We always hear so much talk about Cinderella this time of the year. The NCAA tournament always seems to bring her out, and every glass slipper/pumpkin coach cliché is wheeled out for two weeks.

But at Take Ten, we just sit back and scoff at it all because we think Cinderella’s kind of ugly anyway. Give us Goliath. Yeah, as the four No. 1 seeds made up the Final Four, we were in a Goliath-type mood. That inspired us to think about the greatest dynasties in all sports in state history — the ultimate Goliaths, if you will. Here’s what we came up with:

10. Woodward Academy volleyball, 2001-05 The Eagles won five consecutive state titles, producing such stars as MacKenzie Crain and Taylor Noland.

9. Columbus baseball, 1991-96 The second-greatest dynasty in Georgia baseball history, the Eagles are still one of only two teams to win five titles in a six-year stretch.

8. Norcross boys basketball, 2006-08 This one’s not on here for its length but for how difficult it is to do. If you’ve watched basketball in this state, you know how tough it is to dominate any classification — much less the highest one — for three years in a row.

7. Parkview football, 2000-02 The Panthers are the only team since the old days of Valdosta dominance to win three consecutive titles in the state’s highest classification. One could make a case that Lowndes’ current run of three out of four is at least as impressive.

6. Taylor County girls basketball 1968-72 While they were winning five consecutive state titles and a state-record 134 consecutive games (tied for third-best all-time nationally), they also found time to play a key role in integrating sports in the state.

5. Jefferson wrestling, 2001-present Since the state went to five classifications, Jefferson has owned Class A. During that time, the Dragons have won every traditional and dual state wrestling title, 15 in all.

4. Richmond Academy baseball, 1951-57 This seven-year dynasty still stands as the longest in state history and the second-longest anywhere in the country. Coach Al Williams is a Georgia Hall of Fame coach, as well as the school’s former principal and a World War II prisoner of war.

3. Marist girls tennis, 1994-2006 This amazing run was ended last year when Starr’s Mill finally pried the state title out of the Eagles’ hands after 12 consecutive team titles that followed a singles title in 1994.

2. Westminster cross country, 1984-present The boys have won state every year since 1996, except for 2006. Not to be outdone, the girls took home the state championship from 1984-1990, 1992-2004 and again last year. This is certainly the longest dominant stretch in any sport.

1. Valdosta football, 1951-71 This is the stretch when Valdosta became Valdosta. The Wildcats won 13 titles in 21 years, including 10 undefeated seasons and a 13-1 record in the state championship game.

Go on. Take Ten. What do you think is the greatest dynasty of all time? Should any of these be kicked off the list? Is Northside-Warner Robins going to join the club in football this year? Give us your Goliaths.

Please take in account that some of these school recruited athletes outside thier area in order to form a dynasty (Norcross basketball and Parkview football) Is where its evident.

Walton Girls tennis has won 4 straight state titles and 7 of the last 8. And they’ve won 90 straight matches. Their coach Roberta Manheim has never lost a match at Walton. Deserves mentioning

“Recruiting”?? Show me one of the dynastys that do NOT recuit. All of the private schools can shop for talent anywhere they want and people moving to Valdosta to play football was not uncommon.

The AJC needs to look into Columbia County Baseball for dynasties. Harlem High School won 5 State titles over a six year peiod in the late 70’s early 80’s. Evans High won several in the nineties, and Greenbrier High has won it several times in a row more recently . There are many “dynasties” in high school sports that are not in the Atlanta or Valdosta area.

Lincoln County’s football history is hard to top. In Larry Campbell they have the winningest coach in the state and if they do not win the state championship every year you have to beat them to win it. Parkview’s football history can’t carry Lincoln’s jock.

As for basketball take a look at Southwest-Macon through the seventies and eighties particularly the late seventies. Again the facts don’t lie. They did then what Norcross is doing now except over a longer period.

3-4 years does not a dynasty make. This is ridiculous. What about Lincoln Co. football for the past 25 years? SW Macon boys Bball in the 70’s/80s was among the best in the nation. Do a little research and take more than 10 minutes to throw a list together next time.

Even though one of those titles came at the expense of my HS Baseball team in 1996 (GO Hardaway Hawks!). Columbus High are the Devils, not the Eagles.

Two glaring omissions:

The most obvious omission is West Rome, the only school to win four straight state championships. They won four straight Class AA titles from 1982 through 1985 under three different head coaches, losing only one game in the process.

Also missing was the Hogansville High School boys basketball team. They won Class B state championships in 1970, 1971, 1972 and 1974 and finished second in 1973.

Both are more impressive than what Parkview did in football and Norcross in basketball.

By Swim Fan

April 2, 2008 12:02 PM | Link to this

I would say that Parkview’s record in swimming (admittedly not as popular as football) is more impressive — eight boys state titles since 1995, ten if you include the girls, and Gwinnett County champions every year since 1993.

Parkview swimming has also produced one of the fastest swimmers in the United State, Eric Shanteau. The state’s top-ranked junior, Andrew Ruffing, is also a Parkview swimmer.

The Parkview soccer team has eleven state titles to their credit.

But who cares about sports like that? We should focus more on thug sports like football and basketball because they set fantastic examples for student/athlete achievement!

How does Buford Wolves Football Not make the top 10, they have like won 4 state championships in the last 10 years and had a very impressive list of Division one recruits each year out of a AA school. Names like Tim Wansley, PK Sam, Darius Walker, to name just a few.

One that should be considered: Lowndes High girls basketball. Didn’t they win four consecutive state titles, three national championships with a 122-game win streak from 1976-1980? And Taylor County won five titles and 132 games in the 60s?

I’m sure there are others just as deserving but to not have Buford Football on here is a major ommision. Since 2000 they are 113 and 6, 4 state championships, runner-up 2 times, 1 region loss in ten years, longest winning streak in GA ever (47 games), most games won in a six year period (83), most players to sign D-1 in this ten year period.

In fact you could say this dynasty should be number 1 not left off.

I would add the McEachern Wrestling teams to that list, I forget which consecutive years it spanned, but they won something like 8 consecutive state traditional wrestling titles (I think in the 90’s)for hte largest school classification. Even though I didn’t go to West Rome (I went to East Rome) I have to give the 82-85 West Rome teams a lot of credit. They not only dominated this area but no one could touch them in the state. The 85 team was not scored on in 11 games that year. East Rome was the only team picked to score on them preseason and they beat us 55-0. 4 straight state titles and 1 National title under 3 different coaches has got to be mentioned in this poll.

I agree that West Rome’s 82-85 streak was a huge oversight. HUGE. As long as everyone else is throwing around their suggestions, I will add Dalton High Golf. The Catamounts won 6 state titles in 10 years from 83-92 (including 83, 85, 87,89, 90, and 92). They were in the hunt in virtually every year they did not win. Thanks for the comments, guys. Too many for me to respond specifically, but I’ll hit a couple of generalities …

I wasn’t considering runner-up finishes in a “Dynasty” because, well, it’s not much of a Dynasty if you’re getting beaten. You had to win at least 3 state titles in a row or 4 in 5 years to qualify. Buford had 3 in a row, but Charlton County basically did the same thing right after them. Nobody does that in the highest classification, so that’s why Parkview is there.

That having been said, we had A LOT of Dynasties to consider here, and it’s all rather subjective as to who belongs and who doesn’t. Several in volleyball (Westminster, Wesleyan), some track (Landmark boys and girls), a few basketball, Lincoln County football (their 5 out of 6 in the last 80s/early 90s could have made it), among others. This was a big group to narrow down, and you could make an argument for a dozen or so others to be in the top 10.

If your going to do a list like this PLEASE do your homework. Norcross boys dynasty? OK. But if you’re using three basketball state titles in a row as criteria, Wesleyan and Collins Hill both did it this decade. Wesleyan in 2004-2006 and Collins Hill in 2005-2007. Also, Wesleyan girls have won five state titles in the past seven years and have two state runner up finishes in the past eight. So in the past EIGHT seasons, the Wesleyan girls have been in the state championship game SEVEN times and won it FIVE. Dynasties should be based on longevity. How can you say Norcross boys are a dynasty and not include Wesleyan and Collins Hill girls. Also, Hart County girls won SIX in a row from 1989-1994. THAT’s a dynasty!

How about Lakeside High school? Even though they are horrible now, from 1965-1997 they NEVER had a losing record in football. They won 3 state championships in football, 6 state championships in Men’s soccer, 9 consecutive state titles in women’s gymnastics from 1971-1979( a Guniness world record might I add), 6 state championships in women’s swimming, 1 state title in wrestling, 4 state titles in men’s tennis and 1 in women’s. And this does not even begin to entail the numerous runner up and regional titles that were won during this period as well as some of the greastest coaches of all time in Wayman Creel, Phil Lindsey, Jim Mitchell, Dave Redford, Duane Wilson, Sheila Asher, Eddie Roberts. If you are talking about individual sport dynasty’s, then there are schools that are better. But if you are talking about SPORTS PROGRAMS that have been dominant for over 30 years, then you have to include Lakeside in that discussion.

Over the span of 20 are more years they 20 plus games each year. Now that is what I call a dynasty. Check it out you might be suprised at what they achieved for 25 years 1975-2000

bball friend-

Yeah, definitely, Wesleyan and Collins Hill girls were in the conversation. As was Hart County. You could certainly make an argument for any of those. It’s not about doing homework. It’s about only having 10 slots to fill. I could easily have done a Take 30 on this one, but that doesn’t have quite the same ring to it.

It can’t be only based on longevity, mostly because that wouldn’t be any fun or very accurate. There are a lot more factors to consider if you’re actually trying to determine the greatest dynasties, not just the longest ones.

For football, another team that needs to be mentioned is Clarke Central. From 1976-1992, Billy Henderson’s crew won 3 state titles, played in 7 state title games, and won their region 12 times. And they did it at the highest classification. Athens high also won a few state titles in the 1950’s and 1960’s. And finally, why is nobody mentioning Avondale high school? They were a powerhouse in football in the 1950’s-1970’s winning 3 state titles during this time period.

Even if it’s not a traditional sport, policy debate is still a GHSA sanctioned activity. Hence, Pace Academy needs to be included on the list for winning 21 consecutive (and counting) state championships in whatever classification they’ve been in. Yeah, 2 in a row isn’t quite gonna qualify as a Dynasty, subjective as that may be. Northside has had a great run, but they’ll need one more state title to get into this conversation, as far as I’m concerned. If they do win again this year, I think it’d almost certainly be top-10 worthy today.

The SW Macon boys basketball teams of the late 70s - early 80s were the stuff of legend. Nary a Georgia team looked forward to playing SW Macon then, and no one at any level could stay on the court with them. The number of Division I players (Walter Daniels and Terry Fair at UGA, Jeff Malone at Miss. State, and Norm Nixon at Duquesne, just to name a few)), many of whom went on to stellar NBA careers from SWM during that period is second to none.

Also, what about Buford’s recent record win streak under Dexter Wood while winning three straight state football titles? Like the Wolves or not, they ALWAYS back the talk.

And finally. count me among those who still can’t call competition completely fair when private schools playing in the GHSA can recruit to their heart’s content, while Podunk Public High School has to play with whatever Mama and Daddy bring them. And yes, I know that some big-name programs do the “R” word under the table. It’s the most well-known and least enforced GHSA rule violation, and it’s not limited to football and boys basketball.

How could West Rome football be left off of the list? They are the only football team in the state of Georgia to win 4 straight championships and that includes the so-called dynasties that are on the list. 59-1 record over 4 years, 37 straight victories, National Champions in 1985, 11 straight games unscored on in 1985, and all of this with 3 different coaching staffs. I played on the last 3 of the 4 championship teams and I am shocked that we were left off of the list. Even though the school is gone, I am glad to see that there are other people who remember and support what I have said here. Not only should we be on the list, we should be in the top 5, no doubt. It’s a good question. As I’ve said, it’s all terribly subjective. But I think it’s more difficult to win 3 straight AAAAA basketball titles on the boys side than it is on the girls because of the depth and quality of the competition. There’s some splitting hairs in there, but that was somewhat necessary in order to put this together.

I am from Dalton and remember those great west rome teams well. They are on the short list of state dynasties whether some dumb ajc hack list them or not. What is apalling is the fact that the idiot want even mention them since it was brought to his attention that he omitted them.

I graduated from Dalton and although they fielded consistent playoff teams year after year they certainly don’t qaulify as a dynasty. Teams must win state championships to become dynasties. In fact the Dalton golf team won a bunch of state titles in the decade of the eighties and are more deserving of the dynasty label than the football team.

Jeff, no offense, but by your own words Norcross doesn’t belong on the list. Oh, hell yeah, they’ve dominated for three years, but let’s wait until they can make it four or five until they get the Dynasty label. You excluded several mentioned teams because, in effect, three years does not a dynasty make. Well, does it or doesn’t it? If it doesn’t, then someone else (West Rome, for instance) should be on the list. If three years makes a dynasty, then your list just jumped to a “Take Fifty”.

Thanks for the comment. Yeah, West Rome had some great teams in the early to mid 80s. Won 4 in a row. You could make a case for them being on the list, no doubt. But the talent level and number of teams capable of winning is much larger now. That’s why I tended to weigh more recent Dynasties in football and men’s basketball more heavily. I guess I did “omit” them, but it wasn’t for lack of looking at them.

Steve-

Yes, 3 straight qualified you. That’s what I’ve been saying. So did 4 in 5 years. And I agree, it could have been a “Take 50” or 30 or whatever. That’s part of why I did it. I like the discussion. I like for people to disagree. Makes things a heck of a lot more interesting than everybody patting me on the back and saying, “I concur, my good man.”

I can defend all my picks on here, but I also recognize my criteria is not the end-all, be-all. If each of you had done this list, we probably wouldn’t get even two that matched perfectly. That’s the fun of this topic. Everybody has their own idea of who should be No. 1 and who should be dropped from the list. Most of those opinions are perfectly legit.

In fact, guys, feel free to give us your own top 10. Disagree with me as much as you like. In fact, I insist that you do.

Thanks again, all. I’ve enjoyed the comments here.

Yeah, I took a hard look at TCC during the 90s, but Parkview being the first team in the highest classification to win 3 straight since the early 60s made an impression, and I didn’t want to fill up the list with football. Also, I do mention Lowndes, but they haven’t won 3 in a row, so they couldn’t qualify. And I can assure you, I don’t pay any attention to North/South. I couldn’t have even told you with 100% certainty where a few of these schools were located in the state off the top of my head, and I didn’t plug them into a map because, well, it didn’t matter.

Jon- Buford’s not on there because they only won 3 in a row, and Charlton did the exact same thing right after them. That made what they did look doable. The winning streak was great, but I was mostly looking at titles. Lincoln County had a nice run of 5 out of 6 from 85-90, but that was in the smallest classification and was really in a different era of football in the state.

Oh, sure I went back to the early 50s with Richmond Academy baseball and Valdosta football. Never said I wouldn’t, just that it’s one thing to consider. The fact that Richmond Academy’s is the second-longest such streak in U.S. history and that Valdosta established itself as the nation’s preeminent football program during those stretches trumped the idea that they were in an older era. Same with the smaller classification. It’s not to say there aren’t great players or great teams in that class. Just that the talent pool is much shallower. It’s not a conversation-ender, but it’s something to consider.

I think I’m doing OK on history. You can, and obviously do, disagree on some of these choices. I’m glad because I like the debate. And you may disagree with my criteria, but I do have criteria. It just becomes more difficult to narrow down when there are so many choices like in this list. As has been said before, it could easily have gone to 30, 40 or 50.

Thanks again for the comments.

Jeff, Yes, I’ve seen what you’re referring to in the National High School Sports Record Book. It should be 132, which makes us 4th nationally in consecutive wins. I played in the last 100 of those games and 4 of the 5 state championships. It was great fun!

Jeff,

You must take into account that Buford not only has the longest winning streak in GA history and won 3 titles in a row, but also moved up a class to win the second and third of those championships. Also, they just won another title in 2007 by beating their last two opponents by a combined score of 98-0. If you’re giving me the Charlton County argument, then where’s their fourth title in the 00’s? Buford has it. Come on, four state championships in eight years is better than 06-08 Norcross basketball and Buford was the state runner up for two of those four they didn’t win it all. Period. Top 10 dynasty.

What does being in the smallest classification have to do with anything? Last time I checked, Class AAAA has less schools playing football than AAAA, AAA or AA. And, as far as the 1980s being a “different era”, where does that come from? I really think the level of competition was as high or higher then. We’re not talking pre-1967, pre-integration when we talk about the eighties.

I agree. It’s fun to debate it. However, I do think leaving Lincoln Co. football out of the top ten is a glaring omission. More people than not that know GHSA football would agree.
LCHS, while not nearly the dominating powerhouse they once were, was the “king of the hill” for years on end statewide. If political correctness demands volleyball and cross country, then go ahead and include them. But afer all, this is Georgia where football is still king.

we used to dive against the Couquitt County dive teams and I can assest to the fact that dominated all Georgia schools—large and small since the 70’s. Not only did they win the state categories many times, they won them consistantly for for over 30 years!! An impartial study will clearly show that those South Georgia kids clearly dominated the sport for 30+ years—no other team of any sort can touch that record! It drives our Atlanta teams crazy that those South Georgia farm kids whip our butts on a consistent basis ! AMAZING !!

Thanks to WR4inarow for mentioning the East Rome teams of the late 70’s. They were a great team themselves. They won back to back state titles in two different classes. They were close to become part of this list but they would have had to win several more to be apart of it. The guy you are talking about but couldn’t rememer his name is Larry Kinnebrew. He was a man child in this area. People still talk about him around here. You also have to remember Ray Donaldson. He and Kinnebrew both had very successful NFL careers.

HEY JEFF HAWS, WHAT ABOUT THE WHEELER WILDCATS. Since 1994 their basketball team never loses more than four games a season not to mention the four state titles since then. 2002-2003 and again in 2005 they simply dominated the state and EVEN the best competition states like Texas and New York had to offer.

THEY PLAYERS NEVER GET INTO TROUBLE WITH THE LAW AND MANY OF THEM HAVE GONE ON TO DO PRODUCTIVE THINGS AS WELL AS PLAYING IN THE N.B.A

IS IT BECAUSE OF THEIR “COACH”. I DON’T SEE HOW PARKVIEW AND NORCROSS CAN BE ON THIS LIST AND NOT WHEELER. WHEELER DID JUST PLAY FOR A CHAMPIONSHIP…

John-

That’s a good point. I’m thinking pre-population explosion, but your point is well-taken. I’ve been told by many people that the state has become much more of a football/basketball destination in the past 10-15 years.

catchaclue-

I did want to get other sports included. Not so much out of political correctness but out of being representative of Georgia athletics as a whole. There’s a very good argument for putting Lincoln County in there, though. I agree.

roland-

What Wheeler has done is pretty amazing, but they didn’t meet my criteria of at least 3 titles in a row or 4 out of 5. The fact that they haven’t done it actually enhanced my opinion of Norcross, which has.

TCC won 5 titles in 6 years, all right, but the only “big boys” they played on a regular basis during that run was only one of the 3 you mentioned, and it was Colquitt Co. They haven’t played Valdosta High since 1985, and Lowndes wasn’t on the schedule until 1998-99, after the TCC run was over. We only scrimmage Lowndes in the pre-season now, and we didnt even do that well against Colquitt during our title runs. We won in 95, when we didnt even win a title, and we beat them in 97, when we did win a title. We lost to them all the other years. There were too many 1-AAA teams in the region back then for us to be able to play a lot of non-region teams. Now, as for the Lakeside High comment, Your team made a trip to TCC back in 1996 to play for the AAA title, and you left Thomas County with your tails dragging after you got dismantled by a score of 41-7. That means you didnt win any title in the mid 90s. All you did was tie Kendrick for a title in 1991. Just about every other year during the decade of the 90s, the AAA winner came from down South. Lakeside dynasty, my A**!

I know Cook isn’t a dynasty, but they’re baseball program has made the playoffs for 17 straight years, and in that span won 8 region titles, played in 8 Final Fours, 13 Elite 8 appearances, three State Championship Appearances, and won two State Championships. The 2000 State Championship team was one of the best teams in AA ball history.

One other thing about Cook High basebal, they don’t “recruit.” If anything, they lose baseball talent as well as football to Valdosta and Lowndes, who are 20 miles south of them.

This “Best of the Weak” poll is real impressive….yawn but guess you have to fill the Georgia sports page with something. Just read it with the understanding that the best state for high school sports is now and has been for generations, TEXAS!! PS. I was able to attend the AAAAA basketball finals here and then catch the AAAAA semi-finals in Austin and Norcross would have lost soundly to all four of the Texas semi-finalist teams. There’s no comparison to the overall Texas talent level. Bigger, faster and more of ‘em.

To idiotic TCC fan.

Yeah, you guys kicked our a* in football in 1996. I remember it well, b/c I played for that Lakeside team in 1996. And I definately feel that Thomas County Central should be mentioned in this list b/c they had some great teams in the 1990’s. With that being said, our school would have kicked your a* in every other sport( basketball, wrestling, baseball, soccer, swimming). Unlike in Thomasville( which is a garbage town might I add), there is actually stuff to do in Atlanta, therefore the town doesn’t shut down when football is being played. As for your stupid ” South Georgia football” comment, there have been some great teams from North Georgia( Parkview,Brookwood, Peachtree Ridge, Roswell, Marist, Buford) that have won state championships. So this “South Georgia” dominance is a myth. Great teams win regardless of where they play.

Yesiree Best of the Weak, Texas has the best of everything. When I think of culture and intellect, I think of Houston and Dallas. And lord knows the best representation of Texas’ contribution to mankind is the mental giant in the White House today.

However, your contribution to this forum is just as provocative. Comparing a state with a population of 24 million to a state with the population of 9.5 million. Perhaps one state has a larger base of athletes to participate?

Maybe if you researched a bit you would find per capita Georgia is higher ranked than Texas in turning out Division 1 and professional players in both football and basketball.

But don’t let facts ruin your little dream. Texas is best at turning out right wings, nut jobs and internet fiction writers.

i guess 58 straight regular season wins, 4 dome apperances since 2002 including 3 in a row (2002-2004) number 1 scoring offense and defense in 2007, best ever scoring defense in 2003 (9 shut outs under 30 pts all season) dont mean anything cause were not from atlanta!! well at least you gave valdosta number 1 and not parkview or some other program thats no better or worse than camden county.. but look out next year, the entire team minus 8 seniors (and the juniors behind them got plenty of playing time)is coming back for another season of reign and terror for georgia, alabama (hoover), and florida (columbia) football teams alike. not to mention a number 9 USA Today national Ranking in 2003 and a number 6 USA Today national ranking in 2004. honestly when will you take us seriously??

Definition of Dynasty: A family or group that maintains power for several generations…

That being said, I don’t think you can call 3 championships in a row a dynasty unless it’s surrounded by decades of domination and championships. Only three teams on your list include more than a decade of accomplishments (ironically the top three).

Your list is in no way reflective of the top 10 dynasties in this state… Try again.

Thank you for recognizing Hogansville High basketball dynasty one of the glaring omissions. The three consecutive Class B State championships (‘70, ‘71, & ‘72) and four championships (’70, ’71, ’72, ’74) in five years clearly established Hogansville as the state’s first boys basketball dynasty in the modern era. John is correct. In 1973, they finished only second in the state to their regional rival, West Point.
In fact, region 5B produced six of the ten Class B state champions in the 1970’s by three different schools. Two of those state champion games included regional championship rematches.
Nonetheless, this school closed its’ doors in 1996, but not before winning the Class A State Champion for one last final time in Macon Coliseum. It was truly a story book ending for the school and the town. That Green Wave pride and tradition lives on!!!

Warner Robins Football should be among the Dynasties in Ga football from the mid 70s to when Davis Left and moved to Macon. This is a huge story of a Middle class , mostly Blue Collar Govt, employees that help create a football dynasty in Middle Ga. 10.00 and 20.00 dollar donations, hard work, tradition, was embedded in the kids from Warner Robins and Northside. One or the other was always in the high school regions and state games, Record is very impressive. BUT LOOK at the coach and the town that made it
