Today’s state champs enjoy numerous college football opportunities
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
I’ve been doing some research on state champions through Georgia football history, looking at their starting lineups and the number of their players that went on to play college football. It’s a long project that I might never finish, but it’s been fascinating so far.
One thing’s for sure: Today’s top players have more college opportunities than they used to. Buford’s 2007 team will send 17 of its 24 starters to college football, although many will be preferred walk-ons, such as QB Twoey Hosch (Georgia).
In 2003, 18 of Buford’s 24 starting positions were manned by college signees, and 13 of those went Division 1-A, led by RB Darius Walker (Notre Dame). That’s pretty remarkable for a Class AA school.
I think the state champion I’ve found with the most impressive list of college players is 1985 Clarke Central. Clarke sent 19 of 24 starters to college ball (keeping in mind that I’m counting two-way starters twice).
That doesn’t include FB David Perno, who played baseball at Georgia and now coaches there. It does include TE Derek Dooley (Virginia), C Kent Jordan (N.C. State), QB Robbie Kamerschen (Stanford), FL Carl Platt (South Carolina), LB Doug Brewster (Clemson), LB Reggie Parrott (Ole Miss), PK John Kasay (Georgia) and freshman P Adrian Jarrell (Notre Dame).
Another interesting team was Southwest DeKalb’s 1995 state champs with Quincy Carter. Of 24 starters, 15 played college football, and two — Terrance Trammell and Angelo Taylor — ran in the Olympics as sprinters. They never played college football.
In 2002, Parkview’s third state champion sent 14 of 24 to college football, and 10 played Division 1-A, including linemen Zeb McKenzey (UGA), Brandon Pilgrim (Clemson) and David Overmyer (FSU).
And finally, there was 1949 Brown. Seven of the 11 starters (all played both ways) signed with Georgia Tech and helped launch Tech’s glory days of the 1950s. Tops among those were QB Pepper Rodgers and FB Johnny Hunsinger. Imagine lining up against a starting 11 with seven blue-chip recruits, all seniors.
Below are Georgia’s 2007 state champs and the number of starting positions held by college signees:
• Lowndes (6) — CB Kelly Dawsey (Western Michigan) and RB Darriet Perry (Florida International) signed with Division 1-A schools. Lowndes had a nice group of underclassmen, headed by Florida commitment Greg Reid, a CB and WB. Lowndes sends a high number of players to college (17 of 24 starters from the 2005 team), but the number of its major Division 1-A signees is not remarkable. Same with Northside, below.
• Northside-Warner Robins (10) — No Division 1-A signees yet, but Abry Jones and Eric Fields, both junior defensive linemen, will change that. They will be the only Division 1-A signees from Northside’s dominant 2006 state champs, and they were sophomores then, proving that it’s not the 5-star recruits that win state titles, but the depth of talent and the total team effort.
• Carver-Columbus (10) — The 2007 Carver team should rank highly in history due to its 15-0 record and numerous signees, including WR Jarmon Fortson (Florida State), QB DeRon Furr and junior LB Jarvis Jones (high D-1 prospect). Carver had 10 of 24 starting positions filled by college signees, and 11 other positions filled by junior or sophomores, so that list will grow.
• Buford (17) — Of Buford’s 24 starters, 17 will play college football next season, although five of the players (covering six positions) will be walk-ons. LB T.J. Pridemore (Florida), WR Melvin Harris (Ole Miss) and DT Omar Hunter (Florida) are the top signees.
• ECI (2) — Only LaCollie Gordon (Valdosta State) and OL Chad Turner (Appalachian State) signed from ECI’s 15-0 team, but the junior class is phenomenal with RB Washaun Ealey and LB Dexter Moody (both Georgia commits) and DL J.C. Lanier (Georgia Tech). It’s rare, but not unique, to have this many major D-1 recruits on a Class A team. Charlton County had four in 1999 — Marquis Elmore (UGA), Bama Adams (UGA), Brandon Drury (Wake Forest) and Muhammad Abdullah (Kentucky).
Kick off the debate: What team or teams do you remember with a long list of college signees? If it’s a state champion, Todd might already have a little info on them.

Todd, take a look at Stephenson’s teams. Coach Gartrell has developed a great reputation for getting kids into college programs. Off the top of my head, six guys signed with D-1 schools in 2006 (Jermaine Cunningham, Marcus Ball, Andre Anderson, Kelechi Ordu, Perry Riley, Kelvin Sheppard). No state championships to show for it, but BIG TIME talent coming out of that school and community.

please dont think bc a team doesnt send a good amount of players to college is that its bc the team isnt that good. one of the things most good coaches do (head coach or asst. coach)is to put the kids stats, tapes,etc.. out to colleges. thats one thing that irks me, alot of the coaches dont care enough to do it. tho im a viking, one thing i liked about coach coffey (then at valdosta, now camden i believe) did was get the kids in school, even a w.r who had ony ONE catch the whole year. point is, he got kids in school, no matter whether they were ever gonna play, they at least got a chance at a better education. now the whole D1 vs. D2 comparsion b/t the schools,,,thats a whole different situation. :}

The 1994 Washington County team featured:
Takeo Spikes (AU), Jeremy Brett (FSU) and 9 others who signed scholarships from that class, although none of the others was high D1.
The underclassmen included: Chris Horne (Alabama), Derek Sanders (Alabama), Chris Edwards (Georgia Tech), Terrence Edwards (UGA) and Jesse Miller (UGA).
There were many, many other underclassmen who went on to play at smaller D1, 1AA and D2 schools.
Interestingly, the season before ‘94, WACO was arguably more talented with Demetro Stephens (FSU) and Robert Edwards (UGA), but they lost in the state semi-finals.

Todd, Contrary to what GC wants you to do, Please do not look at the Stephenson program! As a resident of Stone Mountain it embarrassing that this guy (Gartrell) has had well over (20) Div.1 kids in its program, and zero(0) State titles. He didn’t win at Shamrock and to this day haven’t won anything besides a region title at Stephenson. Note to Gatrell: LEAVE DEKALB COUNTY, NOW!

The same holds true for Florida High Schools. Current GT players Clyde Yandell and Mario Butler both won a state championship with Nease high school in Florida. The same team had Tim Tebow, James Wilson (Florida), Hunter Hanyes (Wake), Charlie Curhsman (Alabama), and others.

That Stephenson team is a great example of a team that was famous and fun to watch, even if it didn’t win the big prize. If my quick research is right, there were 5 seniors on that team that signed D-1A — RB Andre Anderson (Central Florida), DE Jermaine Cunningham (Florida), LB Perry Riley (LSU), LB Marcus Ball (Florida State), LB Kelvin Sheppard (LSU).
Another team like that was Harrison in 2002 — Paul Oliver (UGA), Jon Abbate (Wake), Tim Cesa (Maryland), Jason Evans (Stanford) and … who was the fifth? A lineman who went to North Carolina. I’m drawing a blank.
Derrick Mahone also reminds me that Douglass had a team this decade that sent over 20 players to college, and SW DeKalb’s 1994 team (that did not win state) sent 26.
Keep in mind that my research was for state champions, and it included players who might not have been seniors that particular year but who started.

Todd, Would like to do some research of my own. Particularly who’s high school records did Herschel Walker break? Point me to Brown High School on the net?
Herschel Walker broke the single-season rushing record held by Runt Moon of Commerce. Walker had 3,172 in 15 games. Moon had 2,501 in 13 games. Not sure about Walker’s other records, such as TD’s in a season (45), since broken. Funny thing is that you’ll see bios of players where it will say “broke Herschel Walker’s state record for” this or that. Often, it’s untrue. For example, the current FSU bio of Matt Dunham of Brookstone says he broke Walker’s career TD record. Dunham broke Robert Toomer’s TD record. Dunham had 111. Toomer had 105. Not sure how many Walker had, but probably 70-80.
Regarding Brown High, there’s nothing about them online except at the www.ghsfha.com site:
http://ghsfha.org/showgames.php?gTeamID=Brown
Brown won state in 1949. I learned of Brown’s seven signees w/ GT from newspaper microfilm.
Will be back later to comment on 1994 WaCo, another legendary team.

For 2002 Thomson, I count 12 of 24 positions held by future college players. That’s a good number.
The 2002 Screven team that won in AAA that year had only TWO college signees that stuck, if not mistaken — Dusty Reddick (GA Southern) and Sean Mosely (Middle TN State). Guess that shows it doesn’t take overwhelming talent to win if you’ve got coaching and chemistry and those other intangibles.

EJR, what’s embarrassing is your standard of success being the state title. Stephenson has been the best thing going for DeKalb football over the last 7 years, on and off the field. The research is showing that your argument for Gartrell could be the same for a long list of coaches who are high on talent and low on jewelry (Mark Crews, Rodney Cofield, Bill Ballard, Jimmy Chupp). Don’t headhunt Gartrell. Good coach who wins and does his part to get kids into college. That’s what high school coaches should be best at.
Todd, Andre Anderson signed with Tulane and Scott Lenahan was the Harrison lineman who went to UNC. How about 2006 Peachtree Ridge? Another talent-rich team.

Todd,
Your work along these lines is great. Great subject to tackle, sorry for the pun, but it is very interesting.
Great example of depth winning titles, not the stars or D-1 signees of the title year.
Any program will be hard-pressed to line up 7 D-1 starters and have them all sign with the same school like the Brown ‘49 team.
Herschel had 85 HS td’s per the JoCo website. With 45 his senior year he tallied another 40 in soph. and jr. years combined. Since Johnson County got eliminated in the first round (then the quarterfinals, game 13) his jr. year and did not even make playoffs his soph. year, he averaged about 1-3/4 td’s a game in those two years, then averaged a whopping 3 a game in senior campaign. If memory serves me right he did not even play much if at all his freshman year because he was behind another (senior) 1,000-yard rusher and had not developed into the player he then became at JoCo.

Washington County
I’ve got the 1994 and 1996 starting lineups, but wish I had a list of all college signees for those teams. I have some signees (Terrence Edwards, of course, but not all).
I do have the signees for the 1997 team, but ironically don’t have the starting lineup for 1997. If some WaCo fan has that, please let me know. Signees — John McAfee (Valdosta State), Derrick Owens (GA Southern), Vic Miller (Valdosta State), Jessie Miller (UGA), Terrence Edwards (UGA), Tyrie Williams (GA Southern), Derrick Sanders (Alabama). Might be more. I didn’t double-check the spelling of names.
Stephenson Didn’t Anderson commit to Central Florida? I got that info from a story in 2005. … And correct, it was Scott Lenahan.
2006 Peachtree Ridge
I’ve got that list:
CB Derrick Bryant (LSU), PK/P Drew Butler (UGA), RB Brandon Davis (Central FLorida), DB Philip Davis (Tulane), WR Sidney Haynes (Central Florida), DT Cameron Heyward (Ohio State), DB Brandon Sanders (Ole Miss), C Edixon Pino (GMC), QB Zach Graham (basketball, Ole Miss).
Not that many college players overall, but a very high number of D-1 guys. Seven in all, but not all were seniors in 2006. It was 4 in 2006, 3 in 2007, all starters on the ‘06 team.

It is a terrible shame that so many of the Americus kids never made it to college because of grades.
They lost to WACO in the ‘97 championship game with Fabian Walker at QB and John Harris and the other WR whose name I cannot call.
Also, Leonard Pope’s JR. year they were stacked to the gills with lineman who never got eligible for college, or we would be putting them up there with the most talent laden teams ever.

Todd: Brown High is now Brown Middle School. It is an Atlanta Public School and is located on Peeple’s Street on the SW side of Atlanta. It changed to a middle school in the mid/early 90’s and most of its students feed into Washington High School now. So…..I guess you could search under Brown Middle School if you really want to see it.

Interesting article. Here is the best line of your article though. it’s not the 5-star recruits that win state titles, but the depth of talent and the total team effort.
What might be an even more interesting article would be what state championship teams had the “least” kids go to college. Obviously a kids grades (as opposed to talent) could enter into research of both. It is the teams with less kids to go on to play college football and still win championships that I have the most respect for.

Check out the Georgia High School Football Historical Association’s website at http://ghsfha.org (does not include the traditional www).
This is the best website I have ever seen when it comes to easy to find historical data for high school football. It shows that Westlake has had 6 NFL players in its history, including 5 current NFL players. If you check out the site you’ll find more information than you can use. It’s great.
Thanks for the topic Todd.

GC you are wrong! You are now trying to change the argument. EJR was responding to your comment about Coach Gartrell, he never said anything about his standard of success. I’m also a current resident of “The Rock” (Stone Mountain), and there is absolutely no reason this school (Stephenson) should not have atleast one (1) title. Every year they field a team that could probably beat Morehouse with the proper coaching. I believe it’s a little extreme to ask the guy to leave because he can’t win the big one, but I do think that what’s the big deal with having so much only to win so little.

1993 state AAAA Champion Dunwoody sent the following players to play Collegiately: Travis Stroud (UGA), Rod Perrymond (UGA/Morris Brown), Travis Shepard (Southern University),Ivory Covington (Notre Dame), Grasa Miller (Southern University), Jovan Riley (Southern University), Scott Alton (Presbyterian), Kip Pardue (Yale), Andy Bryant (Duke), Larry Mann (UGA),Anthony Watson (Kentucky), Jimmy Carter (Kentucky), Mike Fisher (Kentucky), Orantes Grant (UGA).
Some of the players listed are underclassmen, but this is still an impressive list.

1993 state AAAA Champion Dunwoody sent the following players to play Collegiately: … Kip Pardue (Yale) ….
Kip Pardue is now an actor and model. He played Sunshine Bass in ”Remember the Titans.” Ryan Seacrest also went to Dunwoody about this time, but I don’t think he played football.
If my numbers are right, 13 of Dunwoody’s 24 starters that year played college football.
What might be an even more interesting article would be what state championship teams had the “least” kids go to college.
I mentioned the 2002 Screven team, which had only two. The 1985 Thomson team had only three — Terry Pettis (Tech), Pat Simmons (UGA) and Jerry WInfrey (Hawaii). The team lost Jerry Mays (Tech) to graduation but repeated as state champions.
It was pretty common for small schools in the ’60s and before to have one or no signees. You might have only 20 players on the team. Warren County won 3 state titles in the 1960s with one.

DeMatha had 13 football signees in February, according to its website. Of those, five were D-1A.
Georgia’s top school this year might’ve been Stockbridge, with 15, including four D-1A guys led by QB Tyler Bass (Maryland). Buford had six D-1A signees. In fact, let’s make a list of Georgia schools w/ the most D-1A signees in 2008:
Blessed Trinity, 4 Brookwood, 6 Buford, 6 Peachtree Ridge, 4 Northview, 4 Roswell, 5 Stockbridge, 4
Keep in mind this is D-1A, not total signees. Seems like there were about 10 Georgia schools with at least 10 signees.

The class of 2001 over at Douglass had 8 students to sign to D-1. But we can never pull in a state championship. It’s not like they’re playing every man for himself out there, they play really well as a team, but we can just never get over a hump.

To: Todd Holcomb, OKAY, TODD…You know I must do this…1991 LaGrange. 1-Walt Harris-Miss St. 13th overall pick in the 1996 NFL draft. 2-Rodney Hudson-Miss St. AJC “Player of the year”. (QB) 1991 In the words of the great Billy Henderson of Clarke Central, “I have never seen any one player who had such an impact on the outcome of a game.”. 3-Diallo Burke-Jax St. Last I heard he was still playing in the Arena league with Atlanta. 4-Paul Pickett-Alabama(junior) 5-Andre Short-Alabama(junior) 6-Jason Bray-Auburn (soph) 7-Bubba Scott-Fort Valley (Sr.) 8-Anthony Franklin-Middle Tennessee (Sr) AJC First team All- State 9-Scott Simon-Middle Tennessee (Junior) AJC. First Team All-State There were also quite a good number of kids off this team who went the Junior-College/ Prep School route, whose names escape me. Todd, this team was recognized as NATIONAL CHAMPIONS by USA Today and ESPN. I do not believe you have ever given them their due respect. Having said that, have you ever taken a look at the schedule they played? During the regular season, in addition to Newnan who came into the game undefeated, their non-region games included Northside WR, McKeachen(who they would have to face again in the state semi-finals), and Clarke-Central, a perrenial powerhouse during this decade. During the play-offs, they would have to go up against Statesboro, Valdosta,(who was ranked #1 in the nation by USA Today and ESPN) and Colquit County.(The latter represented the 2 top teams in Region 1AAAA. Now Region 1 AAAAA) Todd, next time you list the “Greatest teams in GHS football”), give a second look at the 1991 Grangers. You should have been there. And, oh by the way, please never bring up 1983 again. PLEASE.

Hi slalom1 …
I’ve got some info on that 1991 team. Dialleo Burks went to Eastern Kentucky. I didn’t know Bubba Scott went anywhere. Can you confirm that? I’m sure you’re right.
Jason Bray didn’t start on that team, according to my info. I have Scott Simons going to Western Kentucky, not Middle TN. And I’ve got Demetric Shipman to Troy and Johnny Easter to Hinds JC. Let me know if you’ve got more on this. I’m researching stat champs. Might write a book some day.
Good points about LaGrange’s 1991 schedule.

To: Todd Holcomb, Wish I could shed more light on the 1991 LG roster. They had so many kids with game. I will check out Bubba Scott. The info I posted was based upon original committments, and unfortunately not what actually happened in some cases. This seems to happen more frequently than one would think. On signing day, it appears that “Player X” signs with school “Y”. Then something happens. Example: Sam Olajabutu was originally signed with Miss. State, but ended up at Arkansas. In 2004, Travis Hart signed with Eastern Kentucky, but is now with GA. Southern. (As a side note, do not know if you remember Travis Hart, but he played Sam LB next to Tray Blackmon.) Had more tackles, more sacks, was bigger and faster. Probably the most underrated player I have ever witnessed. He is built like Olajabutu, but bigger and faster. He could surprise some people and end up playing on Sundays. As for the book, I will be first in line. As somewhat of a Granger historian, I will try to dig up any poop of interest that I can. Speaking of books, there is a book authored by Buddy Sullivan titled: DRESS HER IN ORANGE AND BLUE. First edition was somewhere around 1972-74. Buddy and I were in the media during the same era. In fact, at one time we were next door neighbors. This book is a detailed history of GHS football from the late 1950’s through the late 1960’s, focused primarily on Region 1AAA. (Valdosta, Moultrie, Albany, Lanier, Columbus, Baker,Jordon, R.E. Lee, Willingham, and LaGrange.) For GHS football freaks, it is a great read. Last I heard, Buddy was working for Ga. Public Television.Do not know if the book is still in circulation, or not. Good luck with the book. I wish you the very best.
